DHF welcomes the deadline extension of CE marking

DHF has warmly welcomed the UK government’s decision to continue recognising CE marking for a further 12 months. This means that the UKCA mark will only become mandatory for goods placed on the market after 31 December 2022, rather than 2021 as previously announced.

DHF has campaigned vigorously for a delay because the anticipated upsurge in demand for product testing to support the new marking would have exceeded the capacity of UK testing facilities, for example, for construction products, machinery, and electrical components.

Except where self-declaration by the manufacturer is permitted, UKCA marking can only be supported by testing conducted by UK approved test and certification bodies; tests conducted by EU based bodies will generally not be considered valid for this purpose.

It will therefore be necessary in many cases to re-test products previously tested in the EU, as well as testing new or modified products; the demand for product testing is surging as a result and more time is needed for this to take place.

DHF’s General Manager, Michael Skelding says:
“The ideal solution would have been for the UK and EU to agree to recognise each other’s testing.

“After all, the test standards are identical, and the laboratories all work to the same rules.  However, since this has proved impossible to negotiate, an extension to the time allowed is an acceptable second-best solution.

We shall see whether a twelve-month delay proves to be sufficient. There are certain products for which the shortage of UK test capacity is particularly acute and even cases where facilities are currently non-existent; these may well not be ready in time for the new date.”
DHF represents all the key players in the following sectors: locks and building hardware, doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, domestic garage doors and automated gates.

With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service. They all operate within a Code of Conduct governing standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety, business integrity and CE marking compliance.

The Perfect Solution for Family Run Garage and MOT Business

The independent, family-run “New Naylor Garage” in Elvington wanted to refurbish their business and were looking for a door that is modern, convenient, secure, and practical to best represent their business.

Their previous roller door was aesthetically outdated, physically demanding to use, and offered little to no insulation to their staff, who had been working tirelessly through the winter months to put their successful family business where it is on the map today.

On top of this, the old roller door posed a moderate security risk, due to the fact it could easily be leveraged open enough to force entry, then manually opened fully once inside using the chain hoist.

With all this in mind, the goals were clear. It required a modern professional design, something that would reflect their success and set the business aside from their competition. It had to be custom made, due to the odd dimensions of the opening to allow vehicles of all shapes and sizes through.

It had to be well insulated, to keep its staff comfortable and healthy particularly during the icy winter months. This is also important to protect their tools and vehicles from moisture which leads to rust and corrosion. Finally, it had to be convenient and user-friendly, giving access to multiple staff members while requiring no manual force required to operate.

It was time to make a change, and the business started to search for a solution to these problems.

In the end, SOMMER DOCO provided the solution, a complete made to measure sectional door resolving all these issues at once. While many unique options are available, this door has a modern and stylish yet subtle design, which is perfectly suited to the UK market. A fantastic and coincidentally, cost-effective choice for a thriving British business such as this.

Appearances aside, the sturdy door panels with 40mm thick insulated sections offer very good thermal insulation. Efficiently designed sealing systems also provide excellent isolation for the system, as well as compensating for areas of uneven ground.

All in all, this allows the business to remain efficiently heated, despite the weather outside. This also insulates the noise coming from the workstation, dampening the noise from the various tools inside the garage minimising noise pollution for the surrounding businesses.

While many control options are available ranging from fingerprint scanners to keycode access, the business opted for a key-operated Deadman switch, negating the need for a spiral cable to optical safety edge.

While this requires you to hold and turn the key in place to operate the door, it removes the need for any cables and gives the keyholder full control. This increases the safety of vehicles coming in and out as the door is being manually operated by a keyholder with a full vision of the door.

The door is a standard lift with a pitch to follow the pitch of the roof. This means that the panels follow the roofline, keeping them parallel to the roof and out of the way of vehicles raised on the car lifts inside.

Windows fitted into the panels provide plenty of natural light, brightening up the workspace when the door is shut. These windows have been requested and fitted at a high level, to avoid any prying eyes looking inward for valuables when the business is closed.

While all SOMMER DOCO doors are made to measure, the amount of detail and customisation that can be applied by SOMMER DOCO to suit various needs and requirements is second to none. No matter what the requirements are, SOMMER DOCO has the perfect solution.

101-Year-Old Drives Ford Mustang Mach-E – 90 Years After First Learning to Drive in a Model T

  • Independent living Harold Baggott, who drives daily, demonstrated an all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E to his great-grandchildren
  • The former coach company proprietor and Ford customer’s interest in electrification prompted the test drive from the British Motor Museum, Beaulieu, near his Hampshire home
  • Car-mad great-grandchildren Felix and Charlie joined in the experience, which included riding in a Model T – the same as Harold first drove on private land in 1930

Born in 1920, Harold Baggott, had his first taste of getting behind the wheel of the Model T aged 10, driving the family’s milkman’s delivery float on a farm. He went on to get his license in 1936 (the first year they were introduced), and purchased his first car, a Ford 8 Popular in 1937 for £100 and a Ford Anglia the next year.

Since then the family has owned 20 Fords privately, as well as Ford commercial vehicles in chassis form, converted into coaches for a fleet of 140 run by their travel and coach business.

Mr Baggott was reminded of his Model T experiences with rides in a 1915 model from Ford’s heritage collection, before moving bang up to date and behind the Mustang Mach-E’s steering wheel.

Driving 15-year-old Felix, who has ambitions to be a racing driver, and his 12-year-old brother Charlie, three miles from Beaulieu to former shipbuilding village Bucklers Hard, Mr Baggott was struck by the quietness of electric motoring.

He said: “Since the age of 10, I’ve retained my interest in motoring and today find myself interested in the switch to electrification following the government phasing out the traditional combustion engines I’m used to. I have reminisced about my driving history with the Model T and seen what the future has in store. It was exciting to get behind the wheel of what I expect to see my great-grandchildren will be driving.”

The Mach-E is Ford’s first all-electric SUV on sale now, with a maximum electric driving range of 379 miles.

SIMONSWERK’S TECTUS at Regents Crescent

SIMONSWERK UK’s concealed TECTUS hinges have been fitted throughout the remarkable refurbishment of Regent’s Crescent, the UK’s only Grade 1 Listed New Build.

Designed in 1820 by John Nash who is remembered for his work on Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch, and Regent Street in London. John Nash is one of the most famous architects of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The spectacular sweeping building constructed in 1820 between Regent Street and Regent’s Park was commissioned by the Prince Regent, later King George IV, to house his closest friends and family.

Due to a combination of damage from World War 2 and poor rebuild in 1960, the Grade 1 listed building has been completely rebuilt to turn the office space back into residential accommodation.

The Regent’s Crescent development involved not only the reconstruction of the facade to match John Nash’s original design but also a new contemporary building that sits behind, providing 67 luxury apartments, 9 garden villas, residential amenities, cinema, and spa.

The project required architectural ironmongery of the highest standard incorporating performance and appearance. Leading Architectural Ironmonger John Planck Ltd working in collaboration with Midgard, Millier London & PDP Architects selected SIMONSWERK UK door hinges.

In total over 3,500 various TECTUS concealed hinges including the TE340, TE540, TE541, and the TE527 in Bronze metallic finish were specified to complement John Planck Ltd’s detailed bespoke door furniture and ironmongery schedule.

Tom Planck, Managing Director said:
“On a project with this level of finish and specification we knew that TECTUS hinges were the ideal choice. They have been used on a range of previous high-end schemes and we know that they provide the elegant, concealed appearance required by Architects & Interior Designers with the functionality and high load capacity that this project required”.

SIMONSWERK are Europe´s leading Hinge Manufacturer with a history spanning more than 130 years in the manufacture of brass, aluminium, and stainless-steel hinges for doors and windows. The range includes the renowned fully concealed TECTUS hinge range and the popular TRITECH solid brass hinge with concealed bearings.

IG Doors success is based on a partnership approach to working with their clients, outstanding delivery and service performance and an understanding of the needs of the residents into whose homes IG products are going to be installed.

IG Doors specifically developed a range of products suited to the individual needs of the sectors it services; a product range which is fully compliant with the requirements of changing building industry legislation, as well as meeting the Police Preferred Specification embodied in the Secured by Design initiative.

Hazel Goss, Secured by Design, said:
“It has been a pleasure to renew contracts with IG Doors, who have been one of our long standing members going all the back to 2006 so are now on their 15th year with Secured by Design. They produce an excellent range of doors and I am looking forward to many more years working alongside them”.
IG Doors commented:
“We are delighted to continue our longstanding Secured by Design membership. We believe it is a fantastic initiative that offers guidance to people who are looking for quality security products.”
Secured by Design (SBD) is owned by the UK Police Service with the specific aim of reducing crime and helping people live more safely.

SBD seek to improve the physical security of buildings and the surrounding area using products, such as doors, windows, locks and walling systems along with fencing systems that meet the SBD Police Preferred Specification security requirements.

In addition, SBD work closely with builders, developers, local authorities and registered housing associations to incorporate the police crime prevention standards into developments from initial concept and design, through to construction and completion.

Police forces throughout the UK have specially trained Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) who offer police designing out crime and SBD advice free of charge. Over one million homes have been built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.

SBD have many partner organisations, ranging from the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government through to local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers and work closely with standards and certification bodies.

SBD developed a product based accreditation scheme over 20 years ago – the Police Preferred Specification, which provides a recognised standard for all security products that can deter and reduce crime.

BD work with manufacturers and standards authorities to ensure that security standards are current and updated to keep pace with emerging crime trends.

There are currently many hundreds of companies producing thousands of attack resistant crime prevention products, across over 30 different crime categories, which have achieved Police Preferred Specification.

SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK.

Concours of Elegance Announces the Junior Concours 2021

The Concours of Elegance – a gathering of the world’s rarest cars, and one of the foremost classic motoring events in the world – will see the return of the Junior Concours in 2021.

Taking place from 3-5 September, the Junior Concours welcomes an array of beautiful hand-crafted half-size and three-quarter-scale pedal, electric and petrol-powered cars to sit alongside the full-size vehicles that inspired them.

The Junior Concours will see parents and their children taking on the roles of Works Drivers and Mechanics on Sunday 5th September, as up to 20 cars line-up among a priceless collection of vintage race-winning Bugattis, one-off Alfa Romeos, coachbuilt Ferraris and more.

Much like their full-size stablemates, the Junior Concours cars are mostly handbuilt, borrowing intricate details from iconic cars like the Porsche 911, the Jaguar E-Type, the Alfa Romeo PS Monza or the Ferrari F40. The faithful recreations vary in their complexity, with some requiring pedal power and others making use of electric motors or two-stroke petrol engines and centrifugal clutches.

The Ferrari F40 on display was even treated to a full restoration, having been built by Agostini in the early ‘90s and made available to Ferrari showrooms. It’s believed to be one of five ever made and is powered by its own small petrol engine. Likewise, the 1984 Porsche 911 on display was also restored in 2019 with all original parts and is believed to be one of 200 built.

Over the course of the day, the cars will be piloted by their Works Drivers – supported by their Mechanics – up onto the Concours Live Stage. Competitors will win awards for ‘Best Pedal Car’, ‘Best Electric Car’, ‘Best Petrol Car’, ‘Most Original Car’ and ‘Best Dressed’, before being treated to a tea party in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace.

Andrew Evans, Concours of Elegance Director, said:

“The Junior Concours was such a success last year, that we’ve decided to bring it back for 2021. This feature really shines a light on the fascinating world of bespoke built children’s cars, popularised by the Austin J40 of which almost 32,000 were built from 1950.

This year, as we did last year, we have gathered together a wonderful collection of handbuilt cars of all ages, complete with working headlamps, innovative powertrains and a near-perfect likeness to the full-size models they seek to imitate. With the support of their drivers and mechanics, the Junior Concours will be as much of a spectacle as any of our other priceless displays.”
This display is part of the content that makes up the near-1,000 cars on display during the Concours of Elegance, also including a collection of 95 British cars gathered to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 95th birthday, and a 30UNDER30 Concours aimed at inspiring the next-generation of classic car enthusiast.

Special features for 2021 will also gather together a line-up of Future Classics, representing the potential concours d’elegance stars of the next 50 years, a celebration of 60 years of the Jaguar E-type and a Veteran Car Run display, gathering the pre-1905 motoring pioneers that each year make their pilgrimage from London to Brighton.

Away from the automotive displays, Concours of Elegance remains an occasion of pure luxury, with champagne provided by Charles Heidsieck, picnics by Fortnum & Mason, live stage interviews with Chubb Insurance, hosted by Jodie Kidd, and a collection of art, jewellery and fashion displays.

Presenting Partner, A. Lange & Söhne, recently confirmed to support the event for a further three years, will continue to showcase some of its most intricate timepieces. New long-term partners joining the event in 2021 include The Peninsula London Hotel and Residences, Gooding & Co and McLaren.

Tickets to the Concours of Elegance 2021 are available now ranging from standard entry tickets to full three-course hospitality packages from £288.

Tickets can be bought from www.concoursofelegance.co.uk/tickets

Certass Joins Forces with Which? Trusted Trader

Leading certification body Certass has teamed up with Which? Trusted Traders to bring extra benefits to Certass members and spread the message about the negative impact of door-to-door sales in our industry.

Danelle Kaukau, Head of Member Services at Certass, explains:
“Door-to-door sales are an outdated and poor industry practice that perpetuates the negative perception of our industry with consumers.
“Just as Certass champions local installers and tradespeople, Which? is the consumer champion brand that is trusted by thousands of homeowners making this a perfect partnership, to help homeowners find trusted, competent tradespeople to carry out their home improvements.”
As part of this new partnership, Certass members can get access to an exclusive new offer, to help promote their business and get leads from homeowners who are searching for companies through the Which? Trusted Trader website. Certass members with fewer than 39 employees can get 50 percent off the monthly fee for the first six months of Which? Endorsement membership.

Although the Which? brand offers advice and guidance on a full range of topics, more than half of the 15 million monthly hits on the site are from consumers looking for advice on home improvements. The Which? Trusted Trader Code of Conduct includes a pledge to “Not undertake unsolicited visits to consumers’ homes”, which closely aligns with Certass’ aims to limit door-to-door selling and start to transform the reputation of the glazing industry.

Raj Kakar-Clayton, MD of Which? Trusted Traders, said:
“We’re delighted to be teaming up with Certass in a way that stands to directly benefit so many UK consumers. Which? Trusted Traders is built around working with traders that have rigorous high standards, and this relationship with Certass reinforces that ethos.
"This represents another step in our continuing commitment to help drive up standards and set new service benchmarks for UK customers.”

DHF looks to the future with new ‘five-year training strategy’

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced that it has embarked upon a new five-year training strategy, taking its training offering and initiatives into 2026.

The Tamworth-based trade association is continually ‘planning ahead’ in terms of how best it can serve the industry, and having presented its pioneering strategy to the board, plans are already underway for a series of new and innovative training courses over the next five years that will fully complement its existing offering.

In implementing its new strategy, DHF will be seeking to work with other organisations, for example, ESA (Entrance Systems Alliance), which DHF launched as a joint initiative with Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) at the end of 2020. ESA acts as an assessment centre and offers NVQ’s to the industries served by both organisations. These include door and gate systems, such as fire doors, automated gates and powered pedestrian doors. Since the organisation’s launch, these have gathered momentum.

Training continues to be a central and significant part of DHF’s operations. Just last month it announced the addition of a new Emergency First Aid at Work training course to its portfolio. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, it has continued to deliver training through a combination of face-to-face teaching and via its ‘Distance Learning Programme’ (DLP), and since April, more than 300 people have received training in its Automated Gate & Traffic Barrier, and Industrial & Garage Door training courses.

DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens says:

“We are very excited to launch our five-year training strategy,”

“Training is a big part of DHF and the number of people taking courses has increased dramatically over the past three years. As much as we are a membership organisation, we recognise the part that training plays in our industry, and in keeping safe and compliant products on the market.

“We have developed our new strategy with Dame Judith Hackitt's report on 'Building a Safer Future' (released in December 2018) very much in mind. We acknowledge that a competent workforce is absolutely vital and are committed to achieving this by offering training to the industries we service.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us and this starts now!”

DHF’s training academy at Tamworth has gradually got back to normal following the pandemic, with face-to-face learning and more places now available on training courses.

For further information on training and to book a course through DHF, please visit the website: www.dhfonline.org.uk

New Manufacturer is Rolling on the Right Track

UK Doors Midlands, has recently passed the 6 months mark since it began trading in January this year. In that time, the company has already surpassed 1,100 complete roller garage doors that have been manufactured and delivered to customers nationwide, with 95% of them arriving within 2 weeks!

Simon initially began with a team of 3, consisting of himself as MD, with Steve Brough as Production Manager and Ian Wallace as Technical Manager. However, thanks to high demand and a customer retention rate of 75% already, Simon has taken on more staff and now boasts a team of 10.

Simon’s wife Louise is based in the office in Tipton, West Midlands, doing credit control and office admin. And Ian Wedgbury has joined the company as Charge Hand, bringing with him 20 years of roller door experience.

More drivers and several assemblers have also been brought on board. Capacity has been increased with the addition of a new manufacturing bench and the fleet has grown with the purchase of additional vehicles.

Customer Chris Dalloway at DY Shutters, recently shared a glowing review on LinkedIn that said,
“As a company we tend to specialise in more industrial doors, but every now and then we get asked for a garage door. Over my career I’ve fit a lot and today I fit two (from UK Doors Midlands) and they are probably the best garage doors I’ve ever had to fit, made to help the fitters job be a lot easier.
The smaller details in the manufacturing were such a pleasant surprise! Supplied by UK Doors Midlands we would highly recommend them. Thanks Simon!”
