ADSA: Joint Competency Initiative Nears Completion

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has flagged that its partnership work to deliver a competency framework Initiative for the door, gate and shutter industry is nearing completion, following two years of intensive collaboration to define clear, role-specific competency pathways.

Final outputs are now undergoing industry consultation. This marks a significant step forward in establishing nationally recognised, structured competence frameworks across the construction industry, aligned with the requirements of the Building Safety Act and wider regulatory reform.

As part of the programme, ADSA has played a central role in the development of fire-rated and non-fire-rated installer competency frameworks for door, gate and shutter systems.

A key upshot has been the clear separation of these two product areas – recognition that fire-rated systems require additional, specialist knowledge and skills beyond those needed for standard installations. These include enhanced understanding of product performance, installation tolerances, compliance evidence and the implications of failure in life-safety scenarios.

This group has involved collaboration between ADSA, the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), supported by CITB, spurred on by a shared aim of raising competence, consistency and accountability throughout the supply chain.

It has undertaken a root and branch review of existing National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is now completing a new National Occupational Standard which will be a formal benchmark for training, assessment and qualification development across the sector.

Ken Price, Managing Director of ADSA, said: “This has been a substantial piece of work and one that the industry genuinely needs. Separating fire-rated and non-fire-rated competencies was essential – fire performance products demand a higher and more specific level of knowledge, and that must be clearly recognised.

“This will give employers, training providers and individuals a clear, structured route to understanding and demonstrating competence in line with modern regulatory expectations.”

The final frameworks and National Occupational Standards will support future qualification development, employer assurance and regulatory compliance, helping the sector respond to increasing scrutiny around competence and life safety.

ADSA will continue to support the rollout and implementation of the frameworks, ensuring members are fully informed and able to align their training and workforce development strategies accordingly.

The consultation can be found on the CITB website (Non-Timber and Non-Composite Fire-Resisting Door, Shutter or Curtain Systems) and is available for viewings/feedback until the end of July.

The Next Generation of Industrial Door Control Panels by GfA

GfA has officially launched a new range of next-generation control panels, built specifically to deliver seamless, compliant, digital connectivity, with simplicity and consistency at its core. The launch represents a strategic technological advancement that addresses the demands of modern industrial environments while retaining the familiar operation that engineers already know and trust.

GfA boasts it has trained hundreds of engineers to use the TS range of control panels, and crucially the learning they have gained is transferable to this new range.

Seamless, Compliant, Digital Connectivity with the evodo Ecosystem

At the heart of the TS-C platform is smarter connectivity, enabled by GfA's new digital ecosystem, evodo. The platform integrates secure WLAN and Bluetooth® capabilities directly into the hardware, enabling seamless communication without interrupting door operation. This ecosystem connects building operators and door service companies through three key components:

● evodo-Sync: A dedicated application that enables wireless, on-site software updates, ensuring that controllers remain current with the latest enhancements.

● evodo-Toolkit: A mobile application that connects via Bluetooth to provide local parameter access, time and date configuration, and the ability to read and upload diagnostic information directly from the panel.

● evodo-Web: A web-based platform that allows for continuous remote monitoring of installed TS-C Control Panels, displaying asset data and diagnostic information based on whether the account belongs to a building operator or a door service company.

Built-In Compliance for the Future

With long-term system evolution in mind, the TS-C range has been engineered to provide the reliability and futureproofing required to maintain high standards of safety. Compliance has been built into the heart of the development process. Crucially, the TS-C platform is designed to meet the requirements of the new EU Machinery Regulation coming into effect in January 2027, which the UK is expected to align with. This ensures specifiers and end users are investing in a system that meets not just today’s regulations, but tomorrow’s as well.

Simplicity and Consistency for Engineers

Despite introducing an advanced digital architecture, the transition to TS-C is effortless. It retains the familiar functionality and user interface of legacy TS controls, allowing service teams to apply their existing knowledge immediately.

Hardware has been carefully redesigned to provide significant installation efficiencies. The TS-C features a compact, robust enclosure equipped with integrated snap-off mounting brackets for flexible placement. Inside, engineers will find lever terminals that minimise the risk of wiring errors and reduce installation time, along with a QR code that provides convenient access to installation instructions and fault guides.

Furthermore, troubleshooting has been vastly improved. The TS-C features a revised fault code structure (F.c codes) that clearly differentiates between faults, warnings, and status messages, resulting in faster fault identification and reduced downtime. To simplify stockholding, the control units also offer extensive I/O (input/output) configurability, allowing a single panel to support a wide range of door types and complex site requirements, from EV charging integration to interlocking systems.

A Clear Upgrade Path

The rollout of the new line-up began in May this year with the TS 96.25, which replaces the previous TS 981 model. Throughout 2026, GfA is introducing a total of five new panels, each serving as an enhanced replacement for an existing model to ensure a clear upgrade path: the TS 959 transitions to the TS 91.11, the TS 970 to the TS 92.12, and the TS 971 to the TS 93.13 & TS 93.25. Importantly, the replacement range also captures customer feedback in the design process, resulting in a range of panels that are aligned to the needs of our customers.

By combining fitter-friendly design, future-ready compliance, and an innovative digital ecosystem, the TS-C platform empowers engineers, service teams, and specifiers to work more efficiently today while seamlessly preparing for the future.

Solar Gates becomes SG in strategic evolution of the business

Solar Gates UK, the solar safety and security company serving construction, highways, and infrastructure sectors across the UK, has officially retired - making way for SG. The change is a natural reflection of how far the business has come.

Over 25 years, SG grew well beyond its origins - evolving from a solar gate specialist, then creators of the market-leading SOSEC and INSTABOOM solar barriers, into a company delivering a wide ranging portfolio of safety and infrastructure solutions. The name Solar Gates, while an important part of the company's story, no longer captures the full picture of what the business has become.

"Solar Gates built something real - a trusted team, strong relationships, and solutions that perform in some of the toughest environments in the industry. SG is the natural next step. Over 25 years, we grew far beyond what the original name suggested. This isn't a rebrand. It's the business finally introducing itself properly,” said Anna Blake, Commercial Director – SG.

At the heart of that introduction are four values SG has always lived by: innovative, passionate, capable, and compassionate. These aren't aspirations - they are commitments, visible in every project delivered, every partnership formed, and every client relationship maintained. The name changes. Nothing else does.

As SG grows, that commitment grows with it. The refreshed website reflects the same philosophy as the change itself: cleaner, clearer, and built to help specifiers, contractors, and procurement teams understand the full scope of what SG can offer.

"The challenges facing infrastructure and construction projects are becoming more complex - from safety and sustainability to technology and operational efficiency. SG has evolved to meet those demands,” added Anna.

“With a broader solutions offering together with Torquay Group companies, stronger partnerships, and a team focused on solving real problems for customers, this marks both where the business is today and where it's heading next."

A LETTER TO THE INDUSTRY FROM ANDY COLLETT, MANAGING DIRECTOR, GfA UK

The industrial door industry is entering a defining period of change. Across the UK and Europe, businesses are facing a growing shortage of skilled installation and service engineers. Experienced professionals are retiring, fewer apprentices are entering the trade, and companies are under increasing pressure to do more with less.

For manufacturers, installers and service providers alike, this presents a serious operational challenge. Margins are already under pressure. Time on-site is costly. Training new engineers takes time and investment. And as systems become more advanced, there is a growing risk that technology itself becomes viewed as another obstacle.

But this is precisely the moment when the industry must avoid paralysis through resistance.

The future of industrial doors will not be secured by avoiding change. It will be secured by helping engineers and businesses adapt to it confidently.

At GfA, this has long shaped our philosophy toward product development and training.

The Industry Cannot Afford Resistance to Innovation

There is often a natural hesitation whenever new control technology enters the market. Engineers who have spent years mastering familiar systems can understandably worry that “next-generation” products will mean complexity, disruption, or extensive retraining.

That concern is not unique to industrial doors. Every technical industry faces the same challenge: how to modernise without alienating the very people responsible for installation and service.

The danger comes when resistance slows progress.

Modern industrial doors are increasingly expected to deliver more than simply opening and closing reliably. Customers now expect smarter diagnostics, better compliance visibility, remote support capability, faster commissioning and more efficient maintenance processes. Regulations are evolving. Digitalisation is becoming unavoidable. Service expectations are rising.

If the industry resists these developments, the burden on already-stretched engineering teams only becomes greater.

Technology should reduce pressure on engineers — not create more of it.

That principle has guided the development of GfA’s new TS-C platform.

Familiarity Matters

One of the biggest mistakes manufacturers can make when introducing new systems is forcing installers and service engineers to completely relearn how they work.

That creates downtime, uncertainty and frustration.

The TS-C range was designed differently.

While the platform introduces major technological advancements, the operational logic remains intentionally familiar. Engineers already experienced with the TS Control Panel range will immediately recognise the structure, functionality and workflow of the new TS-C Control Panels.

This matters enormously in today’s labour environment.

Businesses do not have the luxury of removing engineers from site for lengthy retraining programmes. They need continuity. They need confidence. They need products that allow experienced engineers to transfer their existing knowledge directly into newer systems.

The TS-C platform delivers exactly that.

Instead of creating barriers to adoption, it creates a bridge between traditional engineering expertise and future-ready digital functionality.

Technology Should Support Engineers, not Replace Them

There is sometimes concern that increasing digitalisation removes control from engineers in the field. In reality, the opposite should be true.

Done properly, smarter systems empower engineers.

The introduction of GfA’s new digital ecosystem evodo, alongside the TS-C range, has been designed specifically to simplify commissioning, diagnostics and ongoing service support.

With tools such as:

● evodo-Sync for on-site software updates

● evodo-Toolkit for Bluetooth parameter access and diagnostics

● evodo-Web for remote monitoring and fault analysis

engineers can work more efficiently, identify issues earlier and reduce unnecessary return visits.

Importantly, these systems are designed to enhance field expertise — not replace it.

A skilled engineer remains central to the process. The technology simply removes inefficiencies that waste time and reduce profitability.

In a market suffering from labour shortages, this becomes critically important.

Faster Onboarding for the Next Generation

The industry also needs to think carefully about the next wave of engineers entering the sector.

If apprenticeship numbers remain lower than required, businesses must focus on reducing the time it takes for new engineers to become productive and confident on-site.

This is where intuitive product design becomes commercially valuable.

Features such as:

● integrated QR-code access to instructions and fault guides

● simplified wiring layouts

● lever terminals

● modular plug-and-play expansion

● USB-C parameter backup functionality

helps reduce avoidable installation errors and speed up familiarisation for newer engineers.

These are not simply “technical features.” They are tools that support workforce development.

The easier it is for engineers to commission, diagnose and maintain systems confidently, the stronger the industry becomes overall.

Compliance is Coming — the Industry Needs to be Ready

Another major driver of change is regulation.

The new EU Machinery Regulation coming into effect in January 2027 — with the UK expected to align closely — means businesses must prepare now for future compliance expectations.

This is not something the market can ignore or postpone.

The TS-C platform has been designed with future compliance already built in, helping manufacturers and installers protect both their stockholding and long-term product strategy.

Again, preparation matters.

Businesses that embrace change early will place themselves in a far stronger competitive position than those forced into rushed reactive transitions later.

Training Remains the Foundation

Technology alone is never the answer.

The real differentiator will always be people.

For many years, GfA has championed high standards of technical training because well-trained engineers do not just improve safety and quality — they improve profitability.

Confident engineers work more efficiently. They diagnose faults faster. They reduce costly callbacks. They strengthen customer relationships. And they help businesses protect margins in increasingly difficult trading conditions.

That philosophy continues with the rollout of the TS-C platform.

The objective is not simply to introduce a new control panel. It is to support the industry through a wider period of transition — giving businesses the confidence to modernise without fear of disruption.

A Moment for Leadership

The industrial door industry is undoubtedly facing challenges. Labour shortages, changing regulations and increasing technical expectations are real pressures for every business.

But periods of change also create opportunity.

Companies that invest in training, embrace smarter systems and support engineers through technological transition will be the businesses best positioned for long-term success.

The key is ensuring that innovation feels accessible — not intimidating.

That is why GfA’s message to the market is simple:

Change does not need to be disruptive.
Modernisation does not need to create barriers.
And engineers do not need to fear the future of control technology.

With the right support, training and product design, the industry can move forward confidently together.

DHF Sponsors Gate & Barrier Contractor of the Year at 2026 AFI UK Fencing Awards

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is proud to sponsor the Gate & Barrier Contractor of the Year category at the 2026 Association of Fencing Industries (AFI) UK Fencing Awards. The awards celebrate excellence, innovation and commitment across the fencing industry, and recognise companies and individuals who continue to raise standards across the sector.

The Gate & Barrier Contractor of the Year category gives contractors the opportunity to showcase the quality of their work across all sectors, with entries judged on standards of precision, attention to detail, innovation, creativity and overall workmanship.

As part of the entry requirements, companies must also submit key safety and compliance documentation including a Risk Assessment Method Statement (RAMS), a Compliance & Residual Risk Assessment and a Declaration of Conformity. These documents are essential in demonstrating that installations are safe, compliant and professionally delivered.

All finalists will be invited to attend the awards ceremony, which will take place at Old Trafford in Manchester on 12th November 2026.

As part of its continued work across the industry, DHF remains committed to promoting gate safety and compliance. Powered gates and barriers are now a key part of many modern installations, making it increasingly important that systems are installed, maintained and operated safely. Training and competence continue to play an important role in supporting these standards. Through recognised training programmes, DHF helps industry professionals understand current legislation, risk assessment requirements and safe installation practices.

“This award recognises the high standards of workmanship, safety and professionalism that exist across the gate and barrier sector,” explains Steve Hill, Senior Training & Compliance Officer at DHF and judge for the category. “It is important that the industry continues to focus not only on the quality and performance of installations, but also on safety, compliance and ongoing competence. We look forward to seeing the entries for this year’s awards.”

The awards are open to the entire industry and companies do not need to be AFI members to enter. Businesses are invited to submit details of their best installations completed within the past 12 months with entries closing on 14th August 2026.

ADSA Leads on Industry Standards Changes

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is playing a central role in informing and influencing a series of significant changes to standards and regulations affecting the powered pedestrian door industry across the UK.

With multiple frameworks under review, ADSA is actively involved in the development of standards amendments in four key areas:

· new machinery regulation for powered doors and turnstiles

· a long‑term overhaul of construction products to define how doors and other openings are tested and classified

· updates to BS 8214 to bring powered fire doors clearly into scope

· a complete refresh of BS 7036‑0 to BS 7036 to give clearer, more consistent guidance on risk assessment and safety for powered door systems, speed lanes, turnstiles and manual revolving doors.

This stems from ADSA’s involvement on national and European committees such as BSI and CEN which directly contribute to the evolution of standards and their alignment to the EU requirements. This work will define how products are designed, specified, installed and maintained in the years ahead.

ADSA Technical, Standards and Regulation Manager Darren Hyde said: “Our job on these committees is to make sure what’s written into the standards properly represents our industry. But all of this work ultimately comes back to one thing: improving the safety of the end user by making sure powered doors and access systems are properly risk‑assessed, secure against misuse and specified to consistent standards.”

One of the most immediate areas of change is the transition from the EU Machinery Directive to the new Machinery Regulation, which introduces enhanced requirements around safety, traceability and protection against malicious interference - reflecting the growing connectivity of modern building systems.

ADSA has been closely involved in shaping the associated standards, ensuring they align with real-world industry practices while addressing emerging risks linked to smart technologies.

Alongside this, the EU Construction Product Regulation is undergoing a major overhaul, introducing a more consistent approach to how product performance is measured and declared. While this represents a longer-term shift, ADSA is already engaged in early-stage discussions to help shape a framework that will ultimately apply to a wide range of construction products, including doors and access systems. The UK Government intends to align with the new EU regulations - outlined in a recent White Paper.

ADSA is also contributing to updates in fire safety standards BS 8214, including the integration of powered pedestrian doors into fire door design guidance for the first time. Additionally, ADSA is leading the forthcoming revision of BS 7036, which will provide enhanced guidance on risk assessment and risk reduction, helping to create greater consistency in safety decisions across the sector.

Added ADSA Managing Director Ken Price: “We are at the hub of all of this work. We’re directly involved in shaping the standards and we’re working for our industry and our members to make sure their interests are represented fairly and accurately.”

As these changes progress, ADSA is committed to keeping its members informed and prepared through technical bulletins, CPD sessions and collaboration with manufacturers and suppliers.

By acting as a conduit between regulators, standard setting bodies, manufacturers and installers, the Association is ensuring that information is shared accurately and at the right time - not only helping the industry respond to change but actively shaping it, ensuring the powered pedestrian door and automated entrance control industries remain safe, compliant and fit for the future.

Entrance Systems Alliance launches Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction)

Entrance Systems Alliance (ESA) formed by two well-known and established trade organisations, the Automatic Doors Suppliers Association (ADSA) and the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), has announced the launch of a new Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction). It is designed to support the development of skilled supervisors across the construction sector.

The qualification is a workplace-based programme that enables learners to demonstrate their competence in a real construction environment. Built around National Occupational Standards, it assesses practical ability through evidence gathered on site, rather than through classroom-based examinations.

Learners complete a structured portfolio of evidence, supported and assessed by a qualified assessor, with the qualification graded on a pass or fail basis. Candidates must be employed in a relevant role, ensuring that assessment reflects genuine workplace responsibilities. The course is aimed at individuals currently working in construction who are supervising teams or preparing to move into supervisory positions. It is also suitable for those with existing industry experience, or those who have already achieved a Level 2 qualification or equivalent occupational competence.

To achieve the diploma, learners must successfully complete the six mandatory units and two optional units from a selection of four, covering the core responsibilities expected of a construction supervisor. These include monitoring progress against work schedules, maintaining health, safety and environmental standards, co-ordinating work operations, confirming work activities and resources, and developing effective working relationships on site.

Optional units enable learners to tailor the qualification to their role, with areas such as team performance, quality standards, dimensional control, and the use of plant and equipment.

The qualification has been developed to reflect the realities of modern construction sites, ensuring that learners gain relevant, practical skills that can be applied immediately in their roles. It also provides a clear pathway for progression into more senior supervisory or management positions.

“Our Work with the CITB super sector groups has highlighted the need for a route to professional competence; this level 3 qualification offers an opportunity for supervisors in the door, gate and shutter systems industry to demonstrate their competence and gives them a clearly defined pathway towards future management positions”, says Ken Price, Managing Director at ADSA. “We are delighted to be working with NOCN to be offering this qualification."

From an employer perspective, the qualification offers a structured way to support workforce development and confirm the capability of supervisory staff. By aligning with recognised standards, it provides assurance that individuals are operating at the expected level within their role.

“Developing competent, confident supervisors is critical to the future of our industry,” explains DHF’s Deputy CEO, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “This qualification provides a practical, accessible route for individuals to demonstrate their ability in a real working environment, while giving employers confidence in the skills and standards of their teams. It reflects the realities of the construction sector and supports progression at a time when strong leadership on site has never been more important. Through this launch, ESA continues its commitment to raising standards across the industry by supporting skills development, improving competence, and strengthening the pipeline of future construction leaders.”

BFT launches EasyAXS: A smart connectivity solution for automated gates

BFT Automation, the specialists in access automation systems and part of the SOMFY Group, has officially launched EasyAXS, an innovative smart connectivity system designed for automated gates.

EasyAXS delivers a seamless end-to-end solution for installers, simplifying installation and setup, with comprehensive after-sales support.

Easy to install and quick to commission, the compact module is plugged directly into the gate system control panel and connects via a dedicated app with Bluetooth connectivity, allowing installers to configure and activate it directly from a smartphone even without an internet connection.

Wi-Fi or Mobile (4G with a 1GB SIM) connectivity modules are available, offering flexibility tailored to customer needs and project requirements. Users can control their gates through the TaHoma by Somfy app on their smartphones. Those already using TaHoma for home automation can seamlessly add their gate system, making it more convenient to manage gates and other connected devices in one place.

Commenting on the launch of the EasyAXS, Steven Montgomery, Managing Director for Somfy/BFT, said: “Launching EasyAXS is an exciting time for us here at BFT. The solution is made with the installer in mind – simple to install, set up and easy to hand over to the end user. The app is intuitive and designed so that no training is needed to install and use. No additional products are needed for smart phone control either.

“The 4G GSM solution is also very reliable and required for projects where the gate control panel is located out of range of the local WiFi signal. The TaHoma end user app, from Somfy, is easy to use while at home or away and can be linked to a smart speaker for voice activated control.

“We are also looking forward to introducing remote servicing in the near future, which will include remote diagnostics and aftersales support that can take place off site. For the installer, this will mean time saved on travelling to and from locations to resolve issues that can now be identified remotely."

EasyAXS is currently compatible with the Thalia BT A80/160 and Deimos sliding gate operators, with a continued phased roll-out planned for connectivity to other BFT products in the future.

Take the GfA challenge: How to make sense of complex applications

For most installations, a standard control panel is sufficient. But what happens when it's not: When a control system needs to manage a fire door in a baggage handling system at a major international airport, manage traffic flow at a recycling plant, or secure priceless artefacts at a museum?

Tim Drysch, head of electrical at GfA, is trained in handling the unusual, the complex, and the unexpected. The key, according to Tim, is understanding the environment, the challenge and finding simple, integrated solutions.

Here are three challenges that show how bespoke electrical design can turn a problem into a solution.

Challenge 1: The Baggage Conveyor Fire Door

The Situation: At a major international airport, fire shutters are required over baggage conveyor belts to prevent the spread of fire within airside terminals.

The Considerations: This presents a unique conflict of interest. The primary function of the door is to close to stop a fire. However, if the door closes while a suitcase is passing underneath, it will rest on the object, failing to create a smoke-tight seal and compromising the fire rating. Furthermore, the system needs to be reliable; if the mains power fails, the door must remain able to close in power loss.

The Solution: GfA utilise a PLC to create a "handshake" between the door and the conveyor system.

● Intelligent Obstacle Detection: The system uses photo beams. If a fire alarm triggers whilst the door is open and a bag is blocking the beam, the control panel allows the conveyor system to move the belt in forward or reverse until the obstruction is cleared. Only when the beam is clear does the conveyor system send a signal to our panel to close. Once the door has left the open position the conveyor is inhibited.

● Battery Intelligence: The design includes several monitoring systems, for example the battery backup. It constantly checks the voltage and acts depending on the battery status feedback.

Challenge 2: High-Security Logic

The Situation: For high-security applications, such as museums housing cultural treasures or cash-handling centres, standard locking is insufficient. These sites often require heavy-duty physical locking mechanisms or bollards that engage when the door is closed.

The Considerations: The challenge isn't just locking the door but also preventing the door from destroying itself. If a user tries to open the door while heavy mechanical locks are engaged, the motor could cause catastrophic damage to the door curtain. Conversely, the system must ensure the door is actually locked before giving a "secure" signal.

The Solution: The design service implements a strict logic sequence using a PLC and limit switches.

● Verification: The system incorporates strict interlocking protocols to ensure reliable communication between the door, locking mechanisms and other security functions. The system cannot be operated until all the conditions of the interlock are met to safeguard access to the building.

● Fault Detection: If the door hits the floor but the locks fail to engage (perhaps due to misalignment), the system recognises this "fault condition" and locks out the operation, preventing misuse until the security breach is resolved. It also monitors lock switches when the door is open, via volt-free signals to indicate to control rooms the lock status alongside any errors.

Challenge 3: The Universal Retrofit for Retail Logistics

The Situation: A major retailer and distribution customer needed to upgrade loading bays across a vast network of sites.

The Considerations: The customer required a "universal" solution that could handle varying equipment levels at different depots. They needed a single control panel that could integrate dock levellers, traffic lights, inflatable shelters, and door controls. Crucially, they wanted to minimise the time installers spent on-site wiring complex connections.

The Solution: GfA designed a modular, combined control panel.

● Integration: The panel combines two interlocks ensuring that neither the dock or the door could impact each other, achieved through door position monitoring and proximity sensing.

● Fitter-Friendly Design: To address the installation challenge, the panels were pre-wired and pre-tested prior to dispatch. In the field, clear connection diagrams make for easy connection to the DIN rail meaning installers don't need to decipher complex schematics on-site; they simply connect specific wires to specific terminals, significantly reducing site time and wiring errors.

Whatever your challenge, GfA’s electrical design team and technical team provides the logic that sits between the door and the site's specific needs. Call GfA today on 01926 452452 and start work on your project requirements.
