Mul-T-Lock Unveils Enhanced Metal Keys with Superior Durability and Customisation Options

Mul-T-Lock has launched upgraded metal keys, designed to offer enhanced durability increased customisation capabilities, and reduced lead times. This innovative enhancement to the patented platforms marks a significant milestone in key design and functionality.

The new Mul-T-Lock metal keys feature robust metal heads, significantly increasing their resistance to snapping and twisting compared to previous designs.

This advancement ensures the keys are more durable, providing customers with a reliable solution for their security needs.

Mul-T-Lock continues to prioritise bespoke options for its customers.

The enhanced metal keys now allow for greater customisation, enabling the addition of logos or contact details through precision laser marking.

This not only offers a sleek, high-quality appearance but also provides a unique opportunity for businesses to advertise their brand directly on the key head.

Custom inserts in various colours are also available to meet diverse aesthetic preferences.

Says Jamie Jagpal, Mul-T-Lock Mechanical Product Manager:

“The introduction of laser marking for customising metal key heads has significantly lowered the minimum order quantity.

“The elimination of the moulding process for plastic inserts and the need for stamping tools reduce production costs and logistical complexities.

“Now, customers can order as few as five boxes for custom logos, and two boxes for platform logos, making it easier and more cost-effective to access personalised key solutions.”

The streamlined production process, which eliminates the need for stamping tools and plastic inserts, accelerates manufacturing and customising of the new metal keys.

This significantly reduced lead times, allowing Mul-T-Lock to deliver high-quality, customised keys to its customers more swiftly than ever.

Mul-T-Lock’s metal keys continue to provide the same superior security features that customers have come to trust.

All patented mechanical key platforms offer exceptional key security, available in variants such as keyed to differ, keyed alike, and master keyed systems.

The master key systems enable complex suites where each entry point can have its key, while authorised personnel can access specified or all locations as needed.

For convenience, multiple access points can also be configured to operate using the same key without compromising security.

Jamie concludes:

“Mul-T-Lock continues to design, develop, manufacture and market high-security solutions for institutional, commercial, industrial, and residential applications.

“With a reputation built on innovation, reliability, and customer satisfaction, we aim to continue to set the standard in the security industry.

“The launch of Metal Keys is a testament to our commitment to providing advanced, reliable, and customisable solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers.

“We are excited to offer this enhanced product portfolio to our clients and believe it will make a significant impact in the market.”

Safety is Paramount for Strand Hardware

Safety is a key consideration of architectural design and construction. From foundations to finishing touches, ensuring the safety and security of occupants is non-negotiable.

That’s why Strand Hardware's commitment to excellence extends beyond aesthetics and functionality, placing a strong emphasis on safety across its entire range of architectural hardware solutions.

At the core of Strand Hardware's ethos is an understanding of the pivotal role that safety plays in the built environment.

Whether it’s failsafe solutions for emergency exit and panic hardware or preventing injuries from fingers being crushed by closing doors, safety considerations are woven into the fabric of every product.

This commitment provides architects, specifiers and building owners/managers with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that Strand’s quality hardware solutions also meet the highest standards of reliability and security.

Safety takes on added significance in the context of doors and windows.

These openings serve as crucial points of ingress and egress, requiring hardware solutions that not only facilitate ease of use but also provide safety and security.

Strand Hardware's range of door and window hardware is engineered with these considerations in mind, offering a combination of strength, durability, and functionality to ensure the safety of building occupants.

One key element in ensuring door safety is the selection of appropriate mechanisms for door opening and closing.

From door limiting stays to door selectors, Strand’s hardware takes into account a variety of door types, their locations, and intended use - providing durable solutions without compromise.

Similarly, window safety cannot be overstated.

Windows provide natural light and ventilation but must be easy and safe to access while maintaining building security.

Strand’s Duoflex range facilitates smooth operation while ensuring that windows can be securely locked when needed.

These can be fitted to individual windows or linked with bars and optional centre rings for pole operation at high-level or hard-to-reach windows to enable natural ventilation.

Beyond individual hardware components, integrating safety features into the overall architectural design is essential.

Strand Hardware collaborates closely with architects and specifiers to ensure its hardware solutions seamlessly integrate with the broader safety and security building measures.

This holistic approach ensures that safety considerations are addressed at every stage of the design and construction process - from initial concept to final installation.

Moreover, Strand Hardware's commitment to safety extends to ongoing product testing and certification.

Its products undergo rigorous testing to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations, further ensuring their reliability and performance.

Safety is a cornerstone of creating a built environment, so whether it’s a new development or a property refurbishment, Strand Hardware is a perfect partner - helping you set the standard for safety excellence.

Charter Global Supply Lintel Shutters at Bobby Moore Sports Hub, Parsloes Park

Replacing an old sports pavilion, the new, state-of-the-art sports hub at Parsloes Park is a magnificent upgrade for the sporting community at Dagenham.

Named after the borough’s very own football legend, Bobby Moore, the £12.8m sports facility boasts sixteen grass sports pitches, two 3G pitches and a third National League System stadia pitch with spectator seating.

Pitches are named after Sir Trevor Brooking, Paul Ince and Chloe Kelly.

The bright and open sports hub includes gym facilities, a fitness studio and a café alongside a social space and meeting rooms for the local community to use.

When specifying this impressive building, where large areas of the café and community spaces have vast spans of glass windows from floor to ceiling, the Police Crime Impact Statement stipulated a requirement for security shutters of LPS 1175 SR3 standard to protect the building when closed.

Being central to a large park, anyone challenging the security would have more time before the alarm was raised, so the higher security rating, SR3, gives a longer protection time, even if there is a deliberate forced entry using a range of attack tools.

After researching the market, architects Bradshaw Gass & Hope were advised to use specialist security shutter manufacturers, Charter Global, who are experts in delivering bespoke solutions when dealing with challenging projects.

Their Integr8 SR3 lintel shutter was ideal for this project as it is engineered to integrate within the fabric of the building for a flush finish while giving excellent security protection.

A total of 24 shutters were supplied in varying sizes and a RAL colour specific to the building.

The architects were keen to complement the stunningly modern design, so bespoke shutters concealed in the lintels over windows and doors ensured a discreet, contemporary finish.

By being involved in the early stages of the project, Charter Global was able to supply and install the lintels so that unsightly fittings or hood boxes didn’t compromise the 9m span of glazing around the café and community area.

All the shutters can be independently operated, so some parts of the building can be ‘blacked’ out for events if required.

The Integr8 Structural SR3 lintel Shutter is a high-performance shutter, independently tested by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) and certified to LPS 1175, Issue 7, SR3.

Secured by Design also recognises this shutter system as a police-preferred specification.

Manufactured from extruded aluminium, the Integr8 Structural SR3 Shutter is available with a wide range of finishes and RAL colours to suit any building style and architecture.

Smart technology for PVCu doors: ERA launches new ERA Protect Smart Universal Handle

ERA, a leading UK manufacturer of fenestration and home security solutions, has launched its new ERA Protect Smart Universal Handle. It offers a smart security solution for lift-to-lock multi-point locks commonly found on PVCu or composite doors.

The ERA Protect Smart Universal Handle is a true keyless smart solution offering multiple access methods, including fingerprint recognition for up to 50 users, one-touch unlock with the ERA Smart Home app, and instant access using the encrypted key card.

For convenient access control, the ERA Protect Smart Universal Handle can also be unlocked remotely via the WiFi Connection Hub.

In instances where family, friends, or tradespeople may need to be granted access, e-keys can be sent directly through the ERA Smart Home app.

Homeowners can control, track, and revoke access to ensure the highest level of security.

Exclusive to the ERA Smart Home app, a Smart Report feature also provides valuable insights into home security activity and the system’s performance.

Additional features designed for user convenience include a voice assistant for low battery notifications, set up and operation, and notifying users if the door is ‘locked’ or ‘unlocked’.

Built-in geolocation technology also allows the users to choose auto-unlock when at their door once they are within the parameters of ‘home’.

Users can simply turn the thumbturn and press the lever down to unlock from inside the property.

Locking is just as simple; lifting the lever locks the door, and the voice assistant will let you know the door is locked.

The hidden 9V battery backup at the bottom of the external handle adds to the user's peace of mind.

If the batteries are depleted, a single charge from the 9V battery allows entry via registered fingerprint, key card, or app; ideal as a short-term measure to allow access for the batteries to be changed.

Users can be assured that the highest level of data protection is provided. All fingerprint and key card information is encrypted and stored within the handle.

GDPR and PSTI-compliant, the ERA Smart Home app uses two-factor authentication.

The UK-based support team can help during setup, answer any questions following installation and general queries when using the handle.

Easy installation ensures seamless integration into existing manufacturing processes.

The handle comes with a comprehensive video guide for installation and useful how-to videos for operation.

It is available in a choice of stylish finishes, including Matte Black, Polished Chrome, and Satin Chrome, to complement any door.

The ERA Protect Smart Universal Handle adds to ERA’s growing range of smart security innovations, including its innovative TouchKey solution, a complete door solution that combines a smart handle, cylinder and auto-fire multi-point lock for use with new composite and timber doors.

Adam Taylor, Product Manager for Smart Security at ERA, said:

“The launch of the ERA Protect Smart Universal Handle makes smart security available for doors with a lift-to-lock multi-point lock, allowing door manufacturers to offer the convenience and security of smart tech to an even broader customer base.

“With its robust design and choice of smart access methods, the handle ensures the highest level of performance and security for the end user.

“It reflects ERA’s commitment to evolving its range of smart solutions to meet the market's demands.

“In addition to PVCu doors, the ERA Protect Smart Universal Handle is also compatible with timber and composite doors and is battery-powered with all wiring contained in the handle, so no need for an electrician!”

Flight risk: Access control to mitigate airport power outages

Amidst recent news reports of power outages at a UK airport, Abloy UK highlights the need for effective access control solutions that maintain security even when the power supply is disrupted.

Steve Wintle, Head of Critical Infrastructure at Abloy UK, explains:

“We cannot stress enough the importance of building in security and safety resilience within national infrastructure, particularly when it comes to areas such as access control.

“Even in cases where emergency backup energy supplies are available via generators, the resultant power surges can cause chaos in the short term and long-term damage too.

“When power is restored, singular or multiple surges can cause damage to the physical infrastructure, which can then require extensive repair by engineers to become operational again.

“However, there are solutions that remain operational even during these types of incidents.

“By combining the PROTEC2 CLIQ system and electric locks from Abloy UK, airport security and facilities managers can build resilience into transport hub operations - even during a power cut.”

Door magnets, which require a continual power supply, are often used in airport environments as part of the access control solution due to their simplicity of installation.

Still, a power surge can render them useless and leave areas insecure.

There are also fire risks associated with installing a magnet on a door used as a fire escape, as they require special arrangements to guarantee they are always fail-safe in an emergency.

For example, some door magnets require an alarm or ‘request to exit’ mechanism to allow someone to exit, so there could be life-threatening delays for people needing swift egress in an emergency.

There are also a number of building regulation standards related to access control.

Adherence to these is essential to ensure safety and security.

These include BS179 Emergency Escape (for when the building occupants are aware of the building environment), BS1125 Panic Escape (for environments used by the general public) and the new standard BS13637 Electronically Controlled Escape Systems (for use on escape routes).

These standards state that even if a door is electronically controlled for access, there must be a compliant mechanical means of escape in an emergency.

Electric locks, therefore, maintain security and safety without power and without compromising security.

If the PROTEC2 CLIQ solution is also installed as an override, then facilities managers and airport security can maintain access control, as it requires no power and no infrastructure.

PROTEC2 CLIQ enables authorised timed access for staff and contractors, the ability to enable and revoke key authorisation remotely, and the deletion of lost keys.

This offers substantial time savings and operational efficiencies in key collection between airside and landside.

The solution also provides full audit trail reports and can be integrated with permit-to-work systems, offering 100% control of all keys, 100% of the time.

Steve adds:

“Airports are a vital part of our critical infrastructure, and service resilience is crucial.

“The recent power outages at a UK airport and the subsequent disruption have highlighted the need for better standards in security and access control provisions.

“With solutions available to mitigate risks and ensure the continuation of services, now is the time to invest in effective, reliable systems that are both scalable and flexible too.”

Unique 1950 Ferrari 166MM/212 Export ‘Uovo’ to star in the 2024 Salon Privé Concours

A unique 1950 Ferrari 166MM/212 Export ‘Uovo’ will be a headline attraction at this summer’s Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients at Blenheim Palace, 28-29 August.

‘Uovo’ is Italian for ‘egg’, perfectly describing this futuristic car’s attention-grabbing design and presence at the UK’s most exclusive automotive garden party, which will cause a stir.

Described as one of the most famous Ferraris ever built, it was created by a young and enthusiastic team as an ultra-aerodynamic one-off designed to perform better in high-speed road races such as the Mille Miglia.

Racing driver Giannino Marzotto (a two-time Mille Miglia winner) was the driving force behind ‘Uovo’.

He admired Ferrari’s V12 engines but was certain that improved aerodynamics could unlock even more performance.

So, with his brother Vittorio, he ordered two Ferrari 212 Export chassis to be delivered with engines and running gear but without bodywork.

He discussed his ideas with coachbuilder Paolo Fontana plus talented young engineer and designer Franco Reggiani.

The idea for a sleek, low and rounded coupé, backed up by a very rigid frame to ensure the suspension could work without undue disturbance from rough roads, started to take shape.

Reggiani, who had worked in the aeronautical industry during the war, was eager to achieve a lightweight car of a beautiful shape, with a steeply reclined windscreen and a rounded, tapered profile.

Despite being incredibly difficult to work with, he crafted the bodywork using ‘Peraluman’, a lightweight aluminium alloy incorporating magnesium.

Reggiani designed a low nose, a narrow body to slip through the air and pronounced and rounded front and rear wings framing a slim cockpit.

Uniquely, instead of traditional A-pillars, the car had braided steel cables that held the roof in place, while the windscreen was shallow (and made from Perspex rather than glass).

He also positioned the driver’s seat towards the rear of the car, following guidance from Enzo Ferrari, saying that sitting towards the rear helps the driver have a better perfection of oversteer.

Although Marzotto had ordered 212 Export chassis, they were late arriving, so they used an existing 166 MM Touring Barchetta chassis.

When the two 212 Exports finally arrived, the engine was removed from one of them to be fitted in the new car.

It was based on the original 1.5-litre V12 Ferrari but now had a capacity of 2.6 litres and produced 190bhp.

A vital feature of the Uovo was its extra-large fuel tank, configured for long-distance road races, which allowed the driver to cover more than 300 miles between stops.

This was a critical factor in the Uovo's success in the 1951 Mille Miglia and its breakthrough victory at the 1951 Coppa della Toscana.

It then scored a memorable victory in the 1952 Trento-Bondone, driven by Giulio Cabianca.

It subsequently spent a few years racing in North America before being retired into a private collection.

This unique car appeared as one of the marque's legends at Ferrari’s 50th-anniversary celebrations at the Museo Enzo Ferrari in 1997, but ‘Uovo’ remains a Concours rarity, so the 2024 Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients provides a rare opportunity to inspect this car up close.

Salon Privé Concours Chairman Andrew Bagley said:

“This exceptional car has been something of an undiscovered gem for decades.

“It is an icon that has spent its life largely hidden behind closed doors, so I am thrilled that we have secured it to be one of the star draws at Blenheim Palace this August.

“I know it will be a memorable attraction for our guests, who will relish seeing this wonderfully unique and iconic Ferrari up close.”

Entries are almost closed for the 19th edition of the Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients, with entries only now accepted for the following classes:

  • Porsche ‘RS’ Pre-2004
  • Legendary Liveries
Those who would like to enter a car into the 2024 Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients should contact Concours Coordinator Nick Wilkes on +44 (0) 7795 213 361 or on: NickW@salonpriveconcours.com

ASWS flies to the rescue for a leading Scottish Hotel

The conversion of a former warehouse property in the heart of Glasgow into a leading hotel required the speedy intervention of a steel door specialist, with London-based Associated Steel Window Services (ASWS) subsequently flying one of its teams up to Prestwick to carry out the required work.

The building’s imposing red sandstone frontage is dominated by a trio of arched headed openings, which were to be a key feature of the refurbished element to a much larger and very stylish new destination on the famous Clyde Street.

Unfortunately, despite the city’s association with shipbuilding and engineering generally, the main contractor could not identify a company North of the border, capable of meeting the technical and time demands of the project.

The Contract Director for ASWS, Kris Bennell, commented:

“The creation of this landmark hotel involved the construction of a new building alongside the refurbishment and conversion of the original stone structure with which we became involved.

“These were very large and extremely heavy steel doors and fixed lights which required a lot of work – and though the client could probably have replaced them with alternatives, they wanted to stay faithful to the heritage of the building and its architectural style.

“After I originally flew up to Glasgow, as a specialist contractor could not be found locally, and our tender was accepted, we sent a whole team up there on the plane while two other operatives drove vans up with all the necessary equipment.

“The three doors, frames and subframes were then demounted and prepped ready to be transported back to our London premises so restoration could be carried out.”

This process with the frames being deglazed and then grit-blasted back to bare metal, ready for repairs, involved some replacement of heavily corroded sections.

The bottom rails had been almost completely eaten away through resting on the stone paving without any weathering detail. Some of the corroded T-bars were also replaced using stock sections.

An anomaly to the original design or installation was the presence of a substantial, but intrusive and badly deteriorated, timber subframe to all of the three frames, which the project team wanted to have substituted by a tubular section insulated aluminium frame; in order to create a thermal as well as visual uplift.

Designed in-house by ASWS engineers, this was made up in several straight and templated curved sections which were bolted together on site and set back into the stone reveal for the doorframe to be fixed to.

Kris Bennell continued:
“The centre double door had originally featured a central ‘slamming bar’.

“However, in order to facilitate the double doors being converted to two individual entrance doors the slamming bar had been cut out disposed of and the doors inverted at some time.

“As the doors required rehanging as one double door we ended up having a complete new sub-frame fabricated and fitted and the repaired original opening leaves were rehung into it.

“Primed in the workshops, the three assemblies were finished in-situ while the main door was fitted with new ironmongery and an electronic closing mechanism.

“Despite this just involving three openings, due to the condition and the logistics of the location for us, it turned out to be a demanding contract.”

The original 10mm plate glass was replaced by a similar thickness of toughened glass to protect building users, while new solid steel beading was mitred, drilled and taped for its retention.

In addition, the solid steel bead had to be cut and curved to match the shape of the main semi headed frame.

ASWS is a long-established member of the Steel Window Association and well recognised expert in the repair of metal windows, from the earliest wrought iron examples through to contemporary curtain walling.

The family run business is frequently called upon to prepare condition surveys during the appraisal stages of a project, which then become part of the planning or listed building permission process.

The company also maintains a very large stock of ironmongery and metal frame components to assist in its restoration work.

Garador's Side-Hinged Windsor Designed for Modern Living

Garador’s Windsor side-hinged door, with its modern design and useful features, is in a class of its own and is without doubt one of the standout garage doors of 2024.

The Windsor side-hinged door has been specifically designed for homeowners requiring frequent access to their garage.

With its push-down level handle and simple design, homeowners can easily pop into the garage to retrieve or store essential items, from small gardening tools to larger equipment or bicycles. Outward-opening doors also make them suitable for parking a vehicle inside the garage.

Door stays mean it's easy to prop the doors open, even in blustery conditions, and 2-point locking using an espagnolette locking system provides excellent security.

Furthermore, concealed hinges reduce the door’s vulnerability to burglars and provide a better, more seamless appearance across the surface of the door. Weatherproof rubber seals are built into the door frame to give added protection to items stored in the garage.

Garador’s standout Windsor side-hinged door is manufactured from high-grade galvanised steel and comes with a 10-year limited warranty. It is available in a wide colour choice with various options.
