Building Supplies Sector Collaboration Needed to Mitigate Huge Rise in Plastic Packaging Tax

The builders’ merchants sector needs close collaboration with product manufacturers and Suppliers if it is to mitigate the impact of a looming increase in plastic packaging tax, according to National Buying Group (NBG).

The advice comes after an analysis with NBG Partner, Kellaway Building Supplies, which revealed a potential 2,400% increase in tax as the Government looks to address the volume of plastic packaging in routine use and to fully recover the cost of recycling waste.

The first change is the new UK’s Plastic Packaging Tax from 1st April 2022 which will see products imported and packaged in the UK in plastic packaging, with less than 30% minimum recycled content, subject to a £200 per-tonne tax.

This will be followed sometime later by the Extended Packaging Producer Responsibility legislation when merchants will likely be 100% responsible for the cost of recovery of all ‘consumer-facing’ packaging, and the cumulative effect of both could be severe without action.

“Plastic packaging remains widely used across the building products sector for items such as bricks, plumbing, drainage, kitchen, trade counter and bathroom products, which means these tax changes will reverberate across the supply chain,” says Nick Oates, Managing Director at National Buying Group.
“With merchant businesses carrying the cost burden, ideally redesigning packaging to eliminate or reducing plastic content is best, if they are to avoid a financial cliff-edge. If this is not possible the next best choice, will be switching to packaging containing 30% recycled content or more, all which must be supported by providing evidence based accurate product data.”
He continued: “We’ve assessed one of our merchant partners, Kellaway Building Supplies, to try and understand the potential impact and the findings are very concerning. Our assessment is that a mixed merchant with 15 branches could be looking at an increase in the tax burden of circa 2,400%, from circa £5,000 to £105,000.”

Last week the Government pushed back the planned implementation date from April 2023 to an as-yet unspecified date, but Nick says this should not lead to complacency.
“This is a delay not a cancellation. It’s good news, in that it gives everyone more time to reduce their existing use of plastic packaging before the dramatic increase in costs, but there is still a lot of work to be done.”
In a bid to mitigate the potential impact of the increased charges on its independent merchants, NBG has embarked on a collaborative project with the help of a packaging specialist along with a core group of its Partners, namely Kellaway Building Supplies, Frank Key Group, Hughes Forrest Ltd, Palladium Building Supplies and also Suppliers, Aggregate Industries, Cemex UK, Etex, Forterra Building Products, Knauf Insulation Ltd, Ibstock Brick, TIMCO and Toolbank Ltd.

The aim of the project is to drive the reduction of plastic through creating guidance and best practice examples for Partners and Suppliers around optimisation and potentially changing packaging. As part of this, the Buying Group is looking to provide a calculator for Partners to aid forecasting and introduce the requirement for a quarterly packaging statement from Suppliers to monitor continuous improvement.

Together with these efforts, NBG is also urging suppliers to be more forthcoming with the provision of accurate packaging data, now including plastic content of more than 30%. With this in mind, the Buying Group and has updated its logistics template to gather the data which will be then imported into the NBG Product Information Management (PIM) system for access by all NBG Partners; a major initiative which was requested and approved by all Partners.
“The new tax system for plastic packaging is extremely complex with packaging waste from merchant yards subject to taxation that they will be liable for,” says Nick. “Therefore, support from and working with manufacturers to reduce packaging waste is critical”.
“We’re working hard to support our Partners and ensure they have the relevant information about the levels of recycled plastic in order that they can reduce their tax burden. Our template is designed for Suppliers to provide us with this information and I would urge them all to help independent merchants plan for the future by providing the relevant data as quickly as possible.”

After a ten-year break, a MINI John Cooper Works will once again compete in the legendary 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in May 2022. The race car, entered by the private team Bulldog Racing and built up in Nürburg, will compete in the SP3T class.

In September last year, the project was launched at Bulldog Racing in the Eifel region, just a few metres away from the Nordschleife. The base vehicle is a MINI John Cooper Works with the 4-cylinder turbo engine known from the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman and MINI John Cooper Works Countryman with 225 kW/306 hp and a maximum torque of 450 Nm.

Her victory marked the beginning of the Classic Mini's unique success story in rally sport, with 3 overall Monte Carlo Rally wins in 1964 (Paddy Hopkirk), 1965 (Timo Mäkinen) and 1967 (Rauno Aaltonen).

This string of successes included six overall Dakar Rally victories in 2012 (Leonid Novitskiy), 2013 (Stéphane Peterhansel), 2014 (Nani Roma), 2015 (Nasser Al-Attiyah), 2020 (Carlos Sainz Sr.) and 2021 (Stéphane Peterhansel).

The MINI John Cooper Works racing car "Made in Nürburg" pays homage to the racing tradition of the MINI brand in the classic colour scheme of the 1960s racing cars in red/white.

Mul-T-Lock scores at Headingley Stadium

Mul-T-Lock's high security MTL500 patented cylinder system has been installed by MB Locks across hospitality and stands at Headingley Stadium, as part of the prestigious club’s investment programme to achieve strict test match and super league dual criteria.

Headingley Stadium is a double-faced sports stadium that works seamlessly for both Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the rugby league club Leeds Rhinos.

The unique concept of the jointly owned stand is undergoing a significant £50 million investment programme over a twenty-year period, involving architects and designers coordinating with different needs and security aspects.

Mul-T-Lock worked closely with EM-B, part of the MB Group, from the initial design process, working in partnership as technical design consultants for door hardware, and checking compliance across the premises, with a focus on hospitality and stand security, to bring the project together.

To date, over 250 MTL500 cylinders have been installed on a master key suite, providing high-security protection and flexibility to accommodate the different access control requirements across the stadium complex.

Says Rob Oates, Commercial Director at Headingley Stadium:
"We have, and continue to invest, a significant amount to ensure Headingley Stadium meets the strict criteria for both test cricket and Super League rugby. We need to ensure every level of detail is commissioned to be as secure as possible both now and in the future, without compromising on aesthetics and finishing styles."
"MB-Locks, together with Mul-T-Lock, demonstrated the advantages of MTL500, and I was especially impressed with the flexibility of the master key system and its ability to incorporate all of our key access requirements.
“MTL500 master key suite is now installed in the stadium’s hospitality areas and stands, with minimum disruption to the dual ground operations."

Mul-T-Lock’s MTL500 is the first cylinder in the UK to be supported by a unique key authorisation magnetic strip card. This card must be presented to a registered MTL500 locksmith before any additional keys can be supplied to ensure tight control of key duplication.

Philip Goldberg, Managing Director of MB Locks added:
"The Headingley Stadium is a unique challenge, as both the Leeds Rhinos Rugby League Club and Yorkshire County Cricket Club have very different needs and requirements for the project in terms of security, accessibility and aesthetics. We worked on both sides of the stand including boxes, changing rooms, hospitality areas and concourses; a complex brief.
“The benefit of working with Mul-T-Lock is our long-standing relationship, meaning that the specification could be quickly translated with the technical and sales team to design a master key suite, using MTL500 as a protective opportunity to meet the requirements. It can provide the ultimate in security, but also it offers a high-quality access control system with a huge number of useable combinations.”
Lee Mitchell, Mul-T-Lock regional sales manager concluded:
“The specification for Headingley Stadium, especially for the hospitality areas was exceptionally high. And this all had to be considered with top levels of security and access control for corporate and players’ entrances.
“Mul-T-Lock worked with EM-B Locks to deliver the tailor-made solution that could accommodate the different access requirements, all without compromising on aesthetics or security. All ultimately operating off the high protection MTL500 master key system to offer the highest level of patent protection throughout the dual stadium premises.”

See The Future of Hardware at FIT Show 2022

Window and door hardware expert J Banks & Co. Ltd is launching its extraordinary new RT Handle at FIT Show 2022.

Designed in-house and manufactured by an army of impressive robotic machines at their base in Wolverhampton, the Release and Turn (RT) handle is compatible with aluminium, PVCu and timber window systems.

Featuring a unique, patented, compact design with a stack height of just 16mm, the handle retracts to sit flush to the sash frame for a sleek, unobtrusive look. It also incorporates a slim lock and key release cylinder and fits all espag and shootbolt systems with 43mm hole centres.

Norman Berrill, Business Development Manager at J Banks, explains:
“We’ve already had an incredible response to our RT handles. Installers love the sleek, compact design which really comes into its own when homeowners want to fit blinds on their windows. The 16mm stack height means the end of window handles getting in the way of window blinds! The flush design also prevents snagging on clothes and makes cleaning the inside of windows an easier job.”
The RT handle is available in White, Black, Anthracite, Polished Chrome and Silver finishes as standard and can also be ordered in any RAL colour to perfect blend in with RAL coloured window frames for a minimalist finish. Every handle is supplied ready to fit, with diecast colour matched screw covers and M5 fixing screws.

At FIT Show, the J Banks team will be on hand to talk about the product development and their long-standing commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices.
Norman continues: “We’ve made significant investment in our manufacturing facility to lower carbon emissions and improve production efficiency. Using state of the art manufacturing robots also ensures high quality standards across all products and we have stock ready and waiting to be shipped.”
You can find J Banks & Co. Ltd on Stand E6.

Abus UK Family Rallies Together to Send Help to Ukraine

In light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the ABUS UK family has joined forces with colleagues in Eastern Europe to collect and deliver urgent essential items including food, blankets, clothes, and toiletries to centres for refugees in Poland and the Ukrainian borders as people fleeing the war are escaping into the EU.

ABUS UK employees, their families and friends, and business partners, customers and members of the wider local community have collected an amazing amount of critical supplies  which have been sorted, packed, and driven all the way across Europe by ABUS UK’s Vince and Roy.

They were met in Poland by ABUS Polska’s MD Józef Grabowski and our colleagues from ABUS Polska are now distributing the donations to the people who most need them in various locations in Poland where Ukrainian families are being supported, and to entry points on the Poland/Ukraine border.

The ABUS team has even been providing hot drinks to Ukrainians at the Polish border to welcome them to safety.
“It has been so heart-warming to see how the ABUS UK family and their friends and partners have rallied round to support our Help for Ukraine and to know that those supplies are now reaching the people who need it. Thank you!” says ABUS UK MD peter Romanov.
“A special thank you must go out to our colleagues Vince and Roy who drove through the night on a long journey through Germany and into Poland to meet with our friends in ABUS Polska and deliver the essentials we had collected.”
ABUS is a global manufacturer of high quality, innovative security, access and safety solutions with a nearly 100 years’ history of innovation. ABUS UK is part of a worldwide group of companies that supplies and distributes a huge range of both electronic and mechanical security products and systems for home, mobile security, and commercial security.

Element Focused On Helping Manufacturers Improve Testing and Certification at FIT Show

Element Materials Technology will join industry peers at FIT Show 2022, as the exhibition returns after three years to Birmingham on 10 – 12 May 2022.

During the three-day event, Element will be showcasing the range of testing services it offers to door and window manufacturers. Visitors can engage with Element’s team of expert colleagues on stand B21 over a wide range of testing requirements, such as security, durability, weather, acoustics, smoke, fire and photogrammetry.

2022 is also a landmark year for Element, as it is the 25th anniversary since BM TRADA, part of the global testing organisation, launched its ‘Q-Mark’ third-party certification scheme for construction products.

Leigh Hill, Divisional Director, Fire & Building Products, said:
“We are very excited to be back at the FIT Show this year and are looking forward to helping door and window manufacturers with their testing and certification requirements.
“We have continually developed our services and our technical capabilities and have invested heavily in our UKAS-accredited laboratories to raise standards across the industry.
“We’re here to support manufacturers through changing regulations like UKCA marking and updates to Document L, to emerging issues such as supply chains impacting on product certifications, ensuring that they can continue to bring new products to market quickly and cost-effectively.”

In addition to the 25th anniversary of the Q-Mark certification scheme launch, 2022 marks 30 years since the introduction of leading fire protection product certification scheme ‘Certifire’ from Warringtonfire, also part of Element. Alongside these anniversaries, it is 50 years since Warringtonfire started conducting fire testing at its High Wycombe laboratory.

Element operates out of its flagship test laboratory in Wednesbury, Birmingham. At the site, manufacturers’ can attend and witness door and window testing such as PAS24 security attack testing, weather testing and cycle testing.

Compact and Efficient Solution for Industrial Doors

Controls and Automation specialist, Carlo Gavazzi recently launched RVDS single phase variable frequency drives specifically designed to be used in industrial door applications.

The RVDS is used to control the rotational speed of induction motors by controlling the frequency of the electrical power supplied to it. Providing dedicated functions such as reverse, multi-speed operation, external braking, and management of an external electro-mechanical brake all via its 5 digital inputs. Highlighting its suitability for rolling and sliding doors.

The open board design is available as 0.55 kW (2.5 Arms) and 0.75 kW (4.2 Arms) versions, providing a compact solution that especially suits electrical panels where space is a premium whilst the easy set up and push-in connectors make for a more reliable and faster installation time.

As Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things continues to digitize our processes across all industries, the built-in Modbus RTU communication port facilitates integration with an automation system and/or PLC allowing real time status monitoring which improves efficiency and provides predictive maintenance as well as providing real-time data.

As well as providing faster and simpler installation, the new RVDS benefits from compliance with IEC / EN 61800-5-1 and IEC / EN 61800-3 (Industrial environment) and carries the CE, and UK CA approval.

Yale Unveils Smart Hardware for Doors and Windows

Yale has announced the launch of SensCheck™, its new integrated smart window and door lock sensors. This exciting new smart addition to the company’s hardware portfolio means that fabricators and installers can now offer homeowners the option of being able to check the status of their doors and windows on their smart devices and phones.

The Yale SensCheck™ Door and Window Sensor range is currently compatible with Yale’s Lockmaster door locks and several of its largest-selling window lock ranges, including the Rapide and Yale Shootbolt systems. Soon to follow from Yale’s range of smart hardware are its AutoEngage auto-firing door locks for composite doors, patio locks, bi-fold door locks and Tilt and Turn window hardware.

Integration partners

Yale SensCheck™ allows the homeowner to be notified via the Yale Smart Living Home App if their doors are open or closed, locked or unlocked, and whether their windows are in the night vent position. As well as checking the door or window status, SensCheck™ can be set to give a chime when the window or door is opened. SensCheck™ is also compatible with leading voice partners Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant enabling homeowners to ask a variety of commands, such as “Alexa, is my front door locked?” and “Alexa, is my bedroom window open?”.

Paul Atkinson, Managing Director at Yale, comments:
“We have 180 years of trusted innovation behind us, and have enjoyed significant sales of smart door hardware since 2010, so we have learned some valuable ‘smart’ lessons along the way. This provenance means that all over the world we’re trusted to make homes secure, and people feel secure too. The Yale SensCheck™ range is the latest in a long line of products that do this.
“The range utilises smart technology to provide homeowners with ‘instant connected security status’, enabling them to protect the things that matter most and be sure of their door and window security for instant peace of mind.”
Fabricators and installers
Paul adds: “For fabricators and installers, the SensCheck™ range provides a fresh competitive advantage. Household penetration of smart home technology is currently at 41.6% and is predicted to reach 85.7% by 2025[i]. With Yale smart hardware incorporated into windows and doors, fabricators and installers can benefit from offering smart windows and doors as an addition to their range.”

 BSI Kitemark

The Yale SensCheck™ sensors have been accredited with the BSI kitemark for the Internet of Things (IoT). This provides reassurance that it has been rigorously tested to ensure that it is safe, secure and functions properly as part of an ecosystem of connected products – a vital guarantee for a type of technology that is still building trust with the public.

Alarm system

Compatible with Yale’s Sync Smart Home Alarm and CCTV systems, SensCheck™ also has the additional standalone security feature of an integral alarm system via the Yale Sync Hub for extra reassurance. The 94dB internal siren is triggered during a break-in, as well as receiving a notification through the Yale Smart Living Home App.

Geofencing

The Geofencing feature allows homeowners to set notifications via their smartphone or smart watch when they leave their home or pre-set boundary, receiving alerts if they have left their door and/or window open or unlocked.

Paul Atkinson continues:

“The route to market is simple for fabricators and installers. Once the installer has fitted the door and windows, the homeowner simply scans the QR code (found on the hardware or an additional frame sticker), that takes them to the Yale Home website where they can purchase the desired Yale Sensors to fit themselves into the door or windows of their choice. The homeowner then downloads the app and follows the user-friendly step-by-step installation guide. If they have Amazon Alexa, Philips Hue, Google Assistant or a Yale Sync Smart Home alarm it can also be expanded using the Yale Sync Alarm accessories for a more comprehensive security set up - forming an eco-system of smart products within the home.
After sales support
“As with all products in our consumer line, Yale SensCheck™ is supported by online and phone technical back-up seven days a week, and there are how-to videos and many hints, tips, and FAQs available on our website should the end-user or the installer need assistance.”
