Easygates Direct Produce Video on Sliding Powered Gate Safety Legislation

Easygates, Nationwide electric gate automation, access control and safety supplier, have produced a third 3D animation video to depict and re-enforce the core safety messages on sliding power gates.

The video focusses on the information released by the DHF & HSE regarding gate safety legislation and standards, specifically the drawing-in risk on powered sliding gates.

In late 2012 at a residential site in the UK a young child who was riding on a powered gate was carried into the gap between the gate leaf and the supporting pillar, becoming trapped and sustaining serious internal injuries which required surgery.

The child was small enough to be carried through the gap between the vertical bars of the gate leaf and the support pillar. The safety edges fitted on the support pillars failed to prevent this as they were not best positioned to avoid the foreseeable risk from drawing-in and whole body access between the moving gate leaf and stationary parts.

The current standards cover force, speed and recommendations for measurements of hardware, but the hazard of a whole body access is not currently recognised. A formal objection has already been made and the standard is currently being revised, it is anticipated that the revised standard will fully take this issue into account.

View the video below:

Managing director of EasyGates Tony Daniels-Gooding said:
‘Gate designers, installers, suppliers and owners need to be able to recognise and avoid this risk of potentially serious or fatal injury from whole body access. We felt that creating this video would help share this information quickly and easily to the powered gate industry.’
Easygates have over 25 years’ experience in the industry and specialise in gate automation, safety solutions and access control. As ASO Safety Solutions UK competence partners, the company supplies a number of core safety products to the marketplace and is renowned for supplying quality, safety and technical services to a wide range of customers.

Campaigners Draw Up Battle Lines to Boost Powered Gate Safety

Gate safety campaigners are once again mounting a high profile drive to raise awareness of the safety risks posed by incorrectly installed and poorly maintained automated gates.

The Door & Hardware Federation Powered Gate Group has declared October 12 - 18 to be Gate Safety Week. Campaigns and activities during the week, and in the months leading up to the event, will hammer home a key message. All those responsible for automated gates - owners, maintainers, installers - must ensure the gates are safe to use.

In recent years, three children and three adults have been killed in gate accidents. It is estimated there are more than 500,000 automated gates in service in the UK, yet it is estimated just 30 per cent of these are safe to use.

Neil Sampson is chairman of the DHF Powered Gate Group which represents Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment. Neil said:

“Properly installed and maintained gates are perfectly safe to use - but the majority of them still do not comply with current legislation and are potentially dangerous. Up to 70 per cent of automated gates in use could be unsafe. This proportion is thankfully falling as installation standards in the industry continue to rise, due to responsible manufacturers and installers joining our campaign.
“But we’re acutely aware there’s much more work for us to do - hence our decision to hold another Gate Safety Week event this year. The campaign is all about raising awareness of the dangers of using poorly installed and maintained power gates in the hope that we can prevent any further deaths or injuries.
“We are also aware that unsafe installations are still being carried out by uneducated installers and gate companies who are quite willing to take dangerous short cuts in both gate manufacture and installation. This is something that, as an industry, we can no longer tolerate and by informing specifiers, owners and users alike, we will stop this.”
Last year’s Gate Safety Week campaign successfully got the message across to many thousands of gate owners and those responsible for specifying, managing and maintaining automatic gates.

This year, in the run up to Gate Safety Week, members of the 95-strong DHF Powered Gate Group will be holding events to focus attention on gate safety.

Also, the campaigners will be partnering with a number of influential organisations in the safety, enforcement, inspection, education and security sectors. These organisations are pledging their support to the campaign and will be helping spread awareness of the importance of gate safety.

Extensive advice on gate safety, and more details on the campaign, are available from www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk . The Gate Safety Week help line number is 01827 52337.

A Cloistered Life for Keylex at Wells Cathedral

Construction of Wells Cathedral commenced in 1175 with constant development and refurbishment ever since. Following the latest phase in the implementation of the current masterplan for the cathedral, it was decided to make a small store room available to the volunteers who run the information desk and the guided tours so that they could have personal lockers and somewhere to store their equipment.

This room opens directly onto the cloisters and is accessed via a large medieval door. It was impractical to issue keys to all the volunteers but some of the doors in the recent new development already used digital door locks to grant access to those in possession of the relevant door code and these were all working very well. So Jez Fry, the cathedral's Clerk of Works, referred back to the specification for these locks and found them to be Keylex K500 models in dark bronze and lever operated both sides.

Keylex locks are supplied in the UK by Devizes based Relcross Ltd, specifiers and distributors of high performance heavy duty door hardware. Jez readily found their e-commerce site at www.keylex.co.uk which clearly lays out all the options available regarding finishes, door thicknesses and accessories.
"The information on the web site was very useful" said Jez, "It re-assured me that I was ordering the right lock and that it would come with everything needed for the installation, which proved to be very straightforward."

The dark bronze finish harmonises well with the medieval doors as does the entirely mechanical operation that requires no electronics or wiring. The slipping clutch mechanism protects the lock furniture from attempted forced entry, vandalism or just over enthusiastic use.

For further information call 01380 729600 or visit either www.keylex.co.uk for Keylex locks or www.relcross.co.uk for the full range of Relcross door hardware.

Apeer: The Big Secret Is Nearly Out

Apeer, the manufacturer of leading edge composite doors, is getting ready to unveil a groundbreaking new product at Grand Designs Live London (ExCeL, May 2nd - 10th).

Representing the company's first venture outside of doors and entrance systems, the hush-hush new project is, according to Apeer MD Asa McGillian, "set to add a radical new look to British and Irish homes".

Utilising the company's skills and expertise in high end all-GRP composite door sets, Project L represents yet another innovation from the Ballymena-based company.

It was the first to produce a double rebate composite French door, stable door and arched door sash. Then, in 2012 Apeer set a new standard in construction with the first ever all-glass reinforced plastic (GRP) composite doorset. That year it also introduced a 1000mm wide sash; and Apeer 70 became officially recognised as ‘Energy A Rated’. The company’s Doorbuilder software programme has also transformed the way in which retailers work with customers to design and order complete entrance systems with ease and instant pricing.

Now the company is poised to launch another first. Apeer marketing manager Linda Tomb confirmed that Project L had been two-and-a-half years in development and represented an investment of nearly a million pounds.
She said: "We believe that what we are about to unveil is what the market has been waiting for - it is quite unlike anything else out there."
Apeer can be found at Stand B330 in the Grand Build Hall at Grand Designs Live.

NRG Automation’s New Garage Door Operator Opens the Door to Up-Selling.

2015 promises to be an exciting year for the leading supplier of radio controls and tubular motors to the UK roller door market.

NRG Automation is the UK distributor for the Teleco control system, and elero tubular motors, as well as King Gate operators.

NRG Automation’s Technical Director, Andy Perry explains:
“We are able to wirelessly control the automation of most things that move in a domestic environment. From the moment you arrive home, we can open your gates; your roller door; your curtains and blinds; and switch on your lights and boiler: The only thing missing from NRG’s portfolio is a traditional boom operator but this is about to change.”
Matthew Berry who has been in the garage door industry since he was 22, selling a wide range of garage doors and operators has joined the company to introduce a brand new operator to the UK market.

Matthew told us:
“One thing that has excited me about the operator is the wide range of controls and add-ons that will allow dealers to up-sell to their customers. I’ve always been brought up on traditional handsets and perhaps a bell push to open garage doors; but no more. To be able to offer telephone or tablet controlled opening of a garage door really brings this operator into the 21st century, and allows extra sales either at point of sale to the end user, or as a way of selling more product to your customers in the years following the initial sale, such as wired in LED strips for internal or external use”.

For more traditional users, NRG Automation offer a huge array of handsets which tick boxes for all generations of users. A top end 4 channel black and chrome transmitter comes as standard with the operator, but it is possible to mix and match handsets which gives you more choice to offer the end user.

But what if you just want a soft stop/ soft start operator to open and close your garage door. Well that is possible as well. The Black Edition is a belt driven operator with built in LED light, and with 800N of power it will easily open double doors.

One thing that really pleases me, continued Matthew, “Because it has a self learning mode, even I can set it up!”

Light up your Garage door and driveway.

Nrg Automation now offer a substantial choice of internal and external low voltage LED lights for garage doors, driveways, verandas as well as wireless controls for lights, heaters and ventilation including strip lighting, down-lights and wall lights.

Their down-lights are all rated IP65 and operate at 24Vdc making them very safe for the garage door installer to install into the Soffit.  Each light is supplied pre-wired with male and female plugs making it easy to ‘daisy chain’ the lights. The final connection is made directly into the garage door operator or separate wireless receiver. Extension cables are available to extend the reach of the lights.

Also on offer is a range of wall mounted low voltage LED lights and driveway lights that if connected into a wireless receiver can be controlled independently of the garage door with a transmitter from their large selection of hand or wall mounted types or remotely using a wireless PIR for added security.

To shed more light on a range of up selling options please call Matthew Berry on 07738 019 863, contact the office on 0151 424 8900 or email sales@nrgautomation.co.uk

Eco-Friendly High Security

Security expert Abloy has launched a range of electric locking solutions that feature new low energy technology, blending high security with eco-friendliness in the same lock.

The energy saving technology is available with all Abloy handle-controlled locks, and the new low-energy variants can be identified by the use of the letter ‘L’ within the name of the product, for example the EL480L and EL560L.

In instances where the energy consumption of a building needs to be reduced, electric locks are an ideal solution to help increase energy efficiency. Door magnets have traditionally been the standard choice for access control points in commercial buildings, but Low Energy Electric Locks are actually a more energy efficient solution.

This is because door magnets require an electric current to lock the door, whereas an electric lock only uses power to open the door, meaning they do not consume as much electricity.

These new Low Energy Electric Locks have been designed to use significantly less energy than alternative locking solutions, with an annual energy consumption of 0.6kWh in comparison to a door magnet that uses 32.5kWh per year. The locking solutions are fast and easy to install, and are also compatible with traditional devices.

They boast an ultra low current consumption due to energy only being used when the lock status is changed. In addition to the energy and cost reductions, the new Abloy Low Energy Electric Locks have a very wide voltage range and a number of usage possibilities.

Jon Burke, Marketing Manager for Abloy UK, said:
“Abloy prides itself on creating locking solutions that are both high quality and adhere to strict safety standards.

“However, the introduction of UK energy initiatives - such as the government’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) - has meant that there is now greater emphasis upon how much energy is being wasted in buildings as well as their security.

“By selecting our Low Energy Electric Locks, specifiers can ensure that they are choosing a system that not only allows for swift and easy access and egress alongside an enhanced security provision, but they are also reducing the energy consumption and carbon footprint of a building too.”

Ford Transit Golden Convoy Starts UK Tour to Celebrate 50 Years of Service

Golden Transit Convoy departs Commercial Vehicle Show
to tour Transit Centres nationwide

Ford’s golden convoy of Transits celebrating 50 years of the van icon has departed the UK’s CV Show to tour dealerships, events and other shows until the commercial vehicle leader’s actual anniversary on the weekend of Aug 8/9.

The tour by gold-coloured Transit Courier, Connect, Custom and two-tonne Transit models marks five decades of loyal service to businesses in UK and around the world.

Since the first vehicle left the production line in Langley, England, on August 9, 1965, almost 8 million Transit and Transit Custom models have been built, and the Transit has grown from a single model to an entire family of Transit vans.

Peter Lee, chairman of the Transit Van Club and Terry Rayner,
director, Transit Centres wave off the golden Transit convoy
Lined up end-to-end, 50 years of Transits would circle the globe, and on average a new Transit has been bought every 180 seconds during its lifetime.

The latest expanded Transit line-up features four all-new models – Transit, Transit Custom, Transit Connect and Transit Courier – which are boosting demand for Ford commercial vehicles, with sales at an all-time high in March up 43 per cent at 16,497, compared with March 2014.

“The Ford Transit has touched the lives of most of us,” said Mark Ovenden, chairman and managing director, Ford of Britain. “From house moves to moving people, the Ford Transit is an essential tool to get the job done. It has become a mobile office or workshop for some – and loved by us all.”
Four-van Transit line-up has contributed to strongest ever
monthly Commercial Vehicle sales in March 2015
Launched in the same year that the first person walked in space, the Transit made an immediate impact, providing practical support to the booming economy. The Transit evolved with a vast range of bodystyles and variants: from the parcel van, through tipper trucks and campers, to outrageous one-offs, including the Cosworth V8-powered Supervans.

Growing popularity saw production of the Transit accelerate, and after passing the first million milestone in 1976, it rapidly passed the next ones in 1985, 1994, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2013. Add demand for the smaller Transit Connect – with more than 1 million sold – and the compact all-new Transit Courier, and total Transit production is scheduled to top 9 million during 2015.

Transit has also introduced a list of technology innovations to help improve performance, comfort and safety; from features like side-loading doors, radial ply tyres and halogen headlights, to direct injection diesel engines, high security locks and standard anti-lock brakes. The latest Transit models have added state-of-the-art technologies like Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Aid.

This year marks 50 years since the first Transit
rolled off the production line
The success of the Transit has seen production expand beyond Europe, including facilities in Nanchang, China and in 2014 the Transit entered North America for the first time, with the all-new two-tonne Transit being built in Kansas City, Mo. This has helped extend the all-new Transit to 118 markets across six continents.

"Ford’s Transit family continues to lead the way in innovation,” Ovenden said. “With 50 years of van sales leadership in the UK under its belt, the new four-van Transit range is looking forward to its next half century.”

Steel Windows and Doors bring Industrial Style to Domestic Extension

Keen to extend their house in Wandsworth, South West London, to create a large, light filled family kitchen and dining area opening directly onto the garden, Simon and Marissa Pilkington used a screen of steel windows and doors to provide a strong industrial aesthetic. To manufacture and install the windows, they chose Steel Window Association member, Steel Window Service and Supplies.

When the Pilkingtons, who have three children, bought the 1900s semi-detached property, they could see the potential despite the small galley style kitchen at the back of the house. They decided to knock this down and build out into the large rear garden with a single-storey extension. Despite wanting a connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, they were keen not to have bifold doors and, having looked at the different options, realised that a screen of steel windows and doors was the perfect solution.

Working with Steel Window Service and Supplies to refine the design, the couple decided to have two sets of double doors and a central panel of fixed lights which resulted in an impressive 5m wide by 2.7m high area of glazing. In addition, to separate the kitchen from the adjoining sitting room, they designed an internal screen measuring 2m wide by 2.6m high consisting of double steel doors with fixed lights on either side.

To fabricate the windows and doors, Steel Window Service and Supplies used W20 sections which offer narrow profiles and good sightlines. These were hot dip galvanised and were then finished in a factory applied polyester powder coating in RAL 7021 black/grey matt. The external windows were fitted with 16mm double glazing units while the internal screen was single glazed.

Simon Pilkington, a sports marketing consultant, comments:
“We love the industrial look and the feeling of light and space that the steel windows give. They allow a great sense of connection between the garden and indoor living spaces and, despite the large area of glazing, they’re really effective at keeping in the warmth from the underfloor heating. Steel Window Service was great, not only with the fabrication and installation of the windows but in helping us get the proportions right, including everything from the size of the door to the kick plate along the bottom.”
