British Racing Team to Begin World Land Speed Record Title Tilt Next Month

British racing driver, Rick Pearson and his Speed Scotland team have confirmed they will begin their World Land Speed record title tilt next month. The incredible bid will require a timed run of 315mph in a sub-1 litre engine car the same size as a Nissan Micra on the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA.

Pearson, a former Clio Cup and Le Mans racer will pilot the Speed Scotland-prepared ‘Flower of Scotland’ as it takes to the unforgiving salt plains deep in the Utah desert for a second attempt at reaching 315mph. The seven man team narrowly missed out 12 months ago, running just a few notches shy of the target before gear box problems and strong winds forced a premature halt.

Success would see the Lanarkshire-based Speed Scotland claim the 1,000cc World Land Speed Record, a place in the Guinness Book of Records and the honour of being the fastest Scottish team ever on the Salt. Pearson would also become the seventh Brit in history to join the Bonneville 300mph club and only the third alive today.

The August trip will take place under the watchful eyes of a BBC documentary team, commissioned to film the record breaking attempt for a series of programmes to be broadcast on BBC2 in January. The cameras may also capture the beginning of a greener fuel revolution as Speed Scotland boss, Derek Palmer wants to show that electric cars can be just as fast and just as fun as their petrol-powered counterparts. To help with their title bid, the team has developed its own technology and is confident it has put last year’s ghosts behind it.

To help with the record breaking bid, Speed Scotland is seeking sponsorship backing.

Rick Pearson said, “None of us would be going back to Utah if we didn’t firmly believe we could win the title. The official land speed record sanctioned by the SCTA (South California Timing Assoc) is 313 mph and we passed that comfortably last year.

We suffered last year due to lack of funds but, with the BBC cameras following us and two one hour prime time TV slots confirmed after Top Gear, we have lots of offer potential sponsors. It’s an amazing opportunity to help make history.”

The Flower of Scotland is a 22in-wide, methanol-powered Streamliner. It is currently on its way to America and will begin its title challenge on August 11th.

Follow the team at www.speed-scotland.com or search ‘Speed Scotland’ on Facebook.

Safety advice for powered gate customers now available online

Dragon Gates at Harlech House in Dublin

Vital safety guidance on all aspects of choosing, installing & maintaining powered gates is now online at www.dhfpoweredgategroup.co.uk .

The website has been produced by the Door and Hardware Federation’s powered gate group which represents the leading UK manufacturers, suppliers, and installers of powered perimeter gates and gate equipment.

The DHF group was formed following recent fatal accidents that have involved wrongly specified or poorly installed automatic gates. The DHF rose to the challenge of providing an independent platform for the industry to drive up levels of safety in gate manufacture and installation. The group is open only to companies which have demonstrated their credentials of quality, safety and adherence to high technical and safety standards.

So far it has issued comprehensive safety advice to the gate industry in the form of a Health & Safety Executive-endorsed guide. It has followed this up with its online website designed specifically for powered gate customers. The website details how a professional gate installation makes a critical contribution to business or domestic protection, ensuring the user can be protected from any hazards arising from the gate installation.

The website describes the benefits of choosing a DHF powered gate group member company and lists the health and safety requirements that must be met. The site visitor can also easily obtain contact details of all vetted member companies of the DHF powered gate group.

“Correct and safe gate installation is vital, not only to minimise the chances of injury but also to reduce the user’s liability if an unforeseen incident occurs,” said Andy Holz, chairman of the DHF powered gate group.

“Our new customer website, combined with the technical advice we are already giving to building professionals and gate companies, will help ensure that every current and future gate installation in the UK should be safe and will comply with the law. That in turn means that the risk of death or injury due to inadequate manufacturing and installation will be dramatically reduced.”

The website is at www.dhfpoweredgategroup.co.uk or can be accessed from the main DHF website www.dhfonline.org.uk . At a recent gate safety conference topics covered included how the DHF is helping raise industry safety standards, training, the progress made by the gate industry on safety issues, and how the UK could learn lessons from the consequences of increased motorisation of gates in the USA. These presentations are available in the downloads section of the DHF powered gates website.

Asset Tags - A new concept in home security

Homeowners urged to reassess their personal and home security following worrying crime statistics.
  • New research reveals 17 per cent of homeowners have been burgled.
  • 22 per cent have experienced verbal abuse and 13 per cent have been physically assaulted.
  • An online Health and Safety resource has advised homeowners to increase security measures in light of findings.
Homeowners have been encouraged to reassess their personal and home security measures following worrying crime statistics from Gocompare.com. According to new research by the comparison website, 17 per cent of people have been burgled, 22 per cent have experienced verbal abuse and 13 per cent have been physically assaulted.

In a bid to reduce the crime rate in the UK, whatishealthandsafety.com has advised people to apply an asset tag to anything valuable and to invest in CCTV. The online resource has also urged citizens to look out for their neighbours (particularly elderly or vulnerable members of the community) and to install burglar alarms where possible.

Matt Hornsby, a spokesman for the site said: “Unfortunately, crime levels in the UK are relatively high, so it’s essential to protect your property. Bolting doors and windows is a start, but investing in a high-quality security system will help put your mind at rest. There are many gadgets and gizmos available online, so it’s definitely worth taking a look.”

He continued: “Research by criminologists from home insurer LV= has also indicated that five per cent of burglaries in 2011 were carried out by criminals who were stealing specific brands to order. Apple, Samsung and Sony were the most targeted, so it’s worth labelling your goods with asset tags. These adhesives might be small, but they can help police track and trace items that go missing.”

The survey by Gocompare.com has shown that UK residents are already trying to protect their wellbeing – and their belongings. Research shows that 61 per cent keep their doors locked all day, 23 per cent keep a weapon close at hand and 47 per cent don’t answer the door after dark – but more can be done.

Commenting on the recent findings, Hornsby stated: “People are certainly making an attempt to keep safe, but efforts must be improved. 47 per cent of those surveyed might not open the door after dark but what about the other 53 per cent? As a health and safety resource, we’re really encouraging people to stay as safe as possible and to report anything suspicious to the police”.

Please Help South West Garage Doors Support Cancer Research

A team from South West Garage Doors will be cycling the length of the UK, the hard way, in aid of cancer research.  The 234 Challenge - Top 2 Bottom, 3 riders 4 Cancer Research – will set out from the most northerly point in Scotland, Dunnet Head, on September 5th. The team expect to reach their destination, the southern most tip of England, Lizard Point, 9 days later, cycling an average of over 92 miles a day.

Covering the 833 mile route from North to South is considered the most difficult direction to choose as the geographic formation of the UK means steeper hills have to be climbed at the end and the prevailing “summer” winds are usually from the southwest and will be in their faces.

Though keen leisure cyclists, the three man team of Jon Burtenshaw, his son Jack Burtenshaw and colleague Matt May, have never considered anything like this before. Having shared the trauma of family members suffering from cancer the trio where determined to do something to fight the disease.

Support has already been received from Hörmann (UK) Ltd and their Transport Manager, Mick Dunne, has planned the route and will drive the support vehicle. Jon Burtenshaw is calling on the whole of the door industry to help them to smash their modest £3000 target. “This will be the only time we are going to do this and to be honest, I'm not looking forward to the pain but hope we can achieve a great deal for a very worthy cause.”

If you want to contribute to the fundraising effort go to www.justgiving.com/234challenge and don't forget to add some words of support.

HOW TO DEAL WITH THE ELECTRICAL CHALLENGES HIGH HUMIDITY ENVIRONMENTS BRING

In high humidity environments, water vapour can easily get inside the smallest crack in the exterior of drives and control units. This isn’t a problem until the water vapour condenses into water droplets near or on the electrical components within these products. This may not happen straight away but without the correct equipment for the job it is just a matter of time.

In March 2010 Guthrie Douglas was asked by a customer to find a solution to prevent drives and controls failing at a composting facility. The plant was originally fitted with IP65 rated drives and control units but after just a few weeks they started to experience electrical problems.

At the composting plant, green waste is placed in rotting tunnels and heated to accelerate the decomposition of the material, creating compost. As green waste generally consists of a large volume of water a large amount of water vapour is produced when it is heated resulting in an extremely humid environment.

The Guthrie Douglas technical team investigated conditions at the site thoroughly before working with partner GfA to produce a solution using lessons they had learned from installations in Holland where composting plants are commonplace.

The result was a range of IP65i protected drives and control units. This new range was fitted at the composting site in just a couple of weeks, keeping the plant operational. The plant is still using these same drives today.

Since 2010 the range has increased significantly and the products have been fitted to numerous locations. If you have a site where humidity is an issue then IP65i is a must.

More information on the IP65i range and advice on suitable products for any unusual or extreme environment are available from the Guthrie Douglas technical team on 01926 452 452.

Windsor Castle Concours of Elegance - The Event for All Classic Car Owners

With the gracious permission of Her Majesty The Queen, the Windsor Castle Concours of Elegance takes place on Friday 7 – 9 September 2012. In the unique setting of our most historic Royal Castle, sixty of the rarest motor cars will be on display in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee.

Half of the 60 “gems” are coming from abroad – almost 20 from America; some of them are outright concours winners, others are in the final process of restoration ready for their ‘debut’. Nearly all of the cars in the Concours are being driven into the Castle by their owners on the opening day - Friday, September 7.

The Windsor Castle Concours of Elegance is an event where classic car owners can be part of the show too!

On Saturday, September 8, 60 British Classics are being driven to Windsor Castle on the Royal Automobile Club's 'Best of British' Tour. The cars will be parked up all day in a display inside the Cambridge Gate and include Lotus Elan, Jaguar E-type and Rolls- Royce Silver Ghost, telling the story of British motoring.

The Aston Martin Owners Club will also bring 60 cars on Saturday to represent each year of HM The Queen's reign, including a 2012 One-77 and the DB4GT Zagato '2VEV'.

On Sunday, September 9 a further 60 cars, again selected to represent each year of The Queen’s reign, will drive up The Long Walk and park at the Castle as part of the Octane Jubilee Tour.

A dramatic feature is the 'Classic and Modern' display by leading manufacturers: next to a special classic from each marque's heritage will be a new car. Jaguar, Land Rover, McLaren and Bentley have confirmed their appearance.

Last, but not least, there will be displays of rare horse-drawn carriages and a selection of classic Royal cars – among them Prince Charles’ 1969 Aston Martin Volante DB6 MKII will take to the stage for the duration of the Concours. Last seen leaving The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding reception, this famous car is one of the rarest and most sought-after Aston Martins; only a handful of these desirable convertibles were ever made.

Tickets are now available for the public days – Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9.

Please note: all tickets must be booked in advance, to book tickets please visit www.concoursofelegance.com or call + 44 (0)844 338 0338.

Improved domestic security moves centre stage as burglary crime rates rise

An important initiative from the UK lock industry to raise domestic security standards has coincided with increasing concerns about the rise in burglaries in some parts of the country.

A police chief has stated that cuts in police numbers has led to an “inevitable” increase in the number of burglaries being committed. Acting Chief Constable Chris Weigh of Lancashire Constabulary, whose force has lost 500 front-line officers, says house burglaries were up 8.4 per cent in April compared to the same time last year.

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF),  which represents the UK’s leading lock manufacturers, and the Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF) which represent the UK’s leading manufacturers and installers of doors and windows, have launched a new standard for lock cylinders and associated security hardware usually consisting of security handles. This is supported by Secured by Design, the Association of Chief Police Officers’ crime prevention initiative and forms the basis of the latest British Standards Kitemark scheme for replacement lock cylinders and security hardware for locks.

Replacement lock cylinders and handles Kitemarked to TS 007, that will reassure householders that their lock cylinders and handles will resist the common methods of attack used by burglars, are now on the market. These Kitemarked products will resist attack methods including drilling, picking, bumping, snapping and plug extraction.

The TS 007 standard enables the Kitemark symbol to be used on products in conjunction with a star rating of one, two or three. The TS 007 standard requires a three star solution to provide a full degree of security. This level of security can be achieved by either a combination of a cylinder (marked with one star) and security door hardware such as a strengthened door handle (marked with two stars); or a three star cylinder.

Said DHF general manager and secretary Michael Skelding: “There are increasing concerns regarding the rise in so-called austerity crime in the current economic climate, and the Government reduction in the number of front-line police.

“Naturally, householders are becoming more worried about the security of their homes and are looking for more robust security solutions. The UK lock industry has acted quickly to ensure these new security solutions are now readily available on the market.”

If householders are concerned about the level of security offered by the lock cylinders fitted to their doors, The DHF and the GGF recommend that householders seek advice from security professionals such as locksmiths, or refer to the original installers of their doors for advice. The DHF has also produced a website http://ts007.dhfonline.org.uk that informs householders what they should do to ensure their external doors are secure.

Enhanced Heat Pump air curtain offers greater energy savings

Air curtain manufacturer Thermoscreens has launched the HP DXE Heat Pump air curtain in collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric, the leading manufacturer of energy efficient heat pump systems.
The new range is the next generation of heat pump air curtains developed by the two companies, offering even greater energy and carbon savings, easier installation, servicing and maintenance and lower noise levels.

Joining the existing PHV DXE range, the HP DXE Heat Pump air curtain has been developed to help property managers in the retail, hotel, commercial and industrial sectors to further reduce their energy usage.

Graham Cree, UK sales manager at Thermoscreens, said: “Conventional air curtains lower energy usage, as they reduce the amount of heating required, but adding a heat pump to the system can significantly increase the savings. We launched a heat pump air curtain four years ago in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric, and both companies have been working hard to develop a product that can achieve even greater savings.”

The range offers eight models linking to Mitsubishi Electric’s Mr Slim line up and six that work in conjunction with City Multi models.

The new air curtains offer several innovative improvements over the original PHV DXE, including the addition of Thermoscreens’ Ecopower Air Technology. This enhances the air velocity projection and uniformity and the energy effectiveness/savings – delivered through an air plenum, converging nozzle and active circular grille, for which a patent is pending.

To reduce energy usage further, the HP DXE Heat Pump air curtain also offers comprehensive, enhanced control options, including weather compensation as standard on Mr Slim models. This achieves significant energy and carbon savings, and the payback period can be reduced to less than two years.
With weather compensation the heat pump compressor automatically adjusts in accordance with the outside air temperature, measured by an outdoor air sensor. A warmer discharge air stream is selected if it is cold outside, and vice versa.

The Mr Slim and City Multi models are both available in surface mounted and recessed options, and are easy to install, ‘plug and play’ systems with only three cables to wire on site. Access for servicing and maintenance has also been improved, and the customer benefits from lower noise levels as a result of changes to the motors and fans.

Hörmann door sales rise

Hörmann is reporting an increase in sales as warehouse development continues to be dominated by the food retail sector. On-going projects include work for Asda, The Co-operative Group, Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

The desire to reduce the carbon footprint of their supply chains is one factor behind the development of new, more energy efficient, warehouses and is shaping their design.

The increased use of fast action doors both internally and externally is contributing to the increased sales reported by Hörmann. Internally, these doors partition areas and prevent draughts, while externally, they minimise the time the door is open, leading to reduced energy consumption.

With more of these doors in place there is an associated need for safety systems, which has led to greater demand for integration of doors and loading bays that help to maintain the high safety levels these major operators work to. The position of Hörmann as a true one-stop-shop for all loading bay requirements is consequently helping to accelerate sales and has directly led to the development of new products.

Asda, for example, has chosen the new Hörmann, HS7030 insulated high speed spiral door for level access loading bays, while demand from several companies has led Hörmann to include ThermoFrame as standard with all double insulated DPU sectional doors. These products were developed specifically to meet the demand for better thermal efficiency.

As an added service Hörmann has created a free, modular planning tool, the Energy Saving Compass. This gives examples of well planned loading bays, the choices available and calculates the payback time for the chosen options.

Go to www.hormann.co.uk and find the Energy Saving Compass on the welcome page. For further help you can contact Hörmann direct on 01530 513050 or Email info@hormann.co.uk

A Pallet Truck Can Help Reduce Carbon Footprint

Think of energy saving, green policies and corporate social responsibility initiatives and the first items to come to mind are likely light bulbs, recycled paper, car sharing, public transport and perhaps local or organic produce. You can now add the standard pallet truck to that list as one major UK distribution centre says its pallet truck fleet is instrumental to saving energy and reducing its carbon footprint.

Ideal Stelrad Group is a radiator and boiler manufacturer with a 150,000 sq ft facility. In such a huge industrial environment, energy saving can have massive cost benefits as well as being advantageous to the local environment. While no distribution centre, factory or warehouse could remain efficient without pallet trucks to hand, the Group has taken its felt one step further and incorporated its pallet trucks into its quest for energy efficiency.

With almost 13,000 items a day passing through its doors, reliability and efficiency is key. It has fitted longer forks to its pallet trucks and repositioned load wheels to give greater handling flexibility. It estimates that these changes – along with modifications to its forklift trucks – will lead to a 30% reduction in energy usage and cut 300 tonnes of carbon.

For those businesses without the budget to invest in modifying a whole fleet of trucks or with more modest requirements, a small selection of well-picked pallet trucks can help to increase productivity and efficiency. A product such as a high lift pallet truck can also see costs cut by helping employees avoid repetitive strain injury associated with constantly bending to unload products from pallets.

A lightweight hand pallet truck is also a sensible investment being easily manoeuvrable and ideal for use in tight spaces. With generous weight capacities of 3000kg they can be used to move a number of pallets, making them indispensable in busy warehouses, factories and loading docks where time is money. Robust and durable, they are also designed to stand the test of time, reducing the need to spend cash on replacing – this in turn can help to reduce environmental impact.

AlcoSense- essential kit if you are travelling to France

Since the 1st of this month (July 2012) it has been illegal to drive in France without a breathalyser in your car. To comply with the law you must have an NF approved device, not just any breathalyser will do.

The AlcoSense Single NF is the only product available in the UK to comply with the French NF (NF is the French equivalent to the UK BSI Kite Mark breathalyser standard).

AlcoSense Singles use a small blow bag to make sure the right volume of deep-lung air passes through the tester. Too little air equals a falsely low reading, too much equals a falsely high reading. Having the blow bag eliminates this issue and helps to give you one of the most accurate disposable breathalyser readings in the marketplace.

Patented crystals inside the tube change colour from yellow to green in the presence of alcohol. The further up the graduated tube the green colour appears the greater the concentration of alcohol the user has in their system. As the green colour change passes each line, you’ve passed each limit.

The French Transport Ministry advises carrying two so, in the event of one being used, another is still available. This will include UK motorists travelling in or through the country.

Order yours now- twin pack only £4.99 at www.a1motorstores.co.uk. If you carry the wrong type of breathalyser without an NF mark it’s as good as not having one at all in the eyes of the Gendarmerie.”

Who’d be a Director?

Christopher Burgon - Saunders Law
The six points below provided by Christopher Burgon, top litigation consultant at Saunders Law, outline the legal responsibilities to consider when becoming a director.

• Holding a directorship, whether it be in a multi-national corporation or in a small start up, means responsibility as well as privileges

• A director has a duty to promote the success of the company and to exercise reasonable care, skill and diligence, and to avoid any conflicts between their own and the company’s interests

• Any shareholder can bring an action against a director for negligence, default, breach of duty or breach of trust

• Directors can be held personally to account by liquidators or administrator if the company becomes insolvent

• Much diverse legislation can be used to prosecute a director, and they can be prosecuted in their own right for bribery, fraud, insider-dealing and price-fixing

• Care, diligence, and common sense, along with sound, commercially based legal advice, means there is no reason why any director should fall foul of the law

Is flexible working the way of the future?

Emma Clark - Fox Solicitors
This September will see Britain recommence its fight to stop Europe preventing our employees from working more than 48 hours per week.

The Working Time Regulations 1998 sets out exceptions to the limiting 48 hour working week. Many employers rely on one of the main exceptions within those Regulations and argue that their senior executives work 'autonomously' and can therefore work as many hours as they want.
What will happen if this loophole closes? What if Europe refuses to allow us to ask our middle management and junior staff to sign a document in which they 'opt out' of the 48 hour working week?
Should employers start to focus less on potential loopholes in the law and more on a business strategy to work smarter?
The law currently restricts the right to request flexible working to working parents or those with ageing relatives. Sometimes such a request can stall or, at worst, end careers, resulting in an unnecessary loss of talent.
Flexible working can instill immense loyalty in workers and improve staff morale. Remote working provides the employer with access to new markets and invariably delivers a better and extended service for clients.
A high percentage of office space is not utilised. Transport strikes and the imminent Olympics will take its toll on London's commuters and on the environment.
Employers should think imaginatively and consider extending the right to work both flexibly and remotely to all of its employees.
Fox Solicitors are a niche firm specialising in the law relating to employment, partnership and discrimination.

Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) first in Middle East to use a high-tech movable wall system by DORMA

The DORMA MOVEO system was installed in KOC’s Sabriya Collaboration Centre which oversees oil production in Kuwait. Suspended from ceiling tracks, the robust fiberglass construction is up to 50% lighter than conventional moveable walls and provides exceptional soundproofing up to 55 decibel, roughly equivalent to everyday conversation. The partition can be deployed by a single person with ease and folds away into a compact storage space far away from the partition location.

Mr. Ahmed Al Jasmi, Team Leader, Research and Technology Said: “This product is an extremely impressive lightweight movable wall system, proving to be extremely cost effective against manual systems. DORMA MOVEO is fully compatible with KOC’s SMART building automation controls. We are very happy with the support we have got from the DORMA sales, operation and technical teams, which has developed into an excellent working relationship.”

Hayel Orakait, Country Manager, DORMA Kuwait said: “We are very pleased with KOC being our very end user to install our new product MOVEO Comfort Drive movable wall in one of their operation rooms in KOC Headquarters. Our product demonstrates the differentiation of DORMA and reflects the leadership of DORMA in the industry.”

The DORMA MOVEO system is available in three product variations to meet specific user requirements. The Smart Line is ideal for average room heights and low sound insulation requirements (37 dB), while the Business Line offers a solution for moderate to high sound insulation values (47 and 55 dB) and has a more sophisticated finish. High acoustic values (55 dB) combined with high-quality, aesthetically pleasing surface finishes are offered by the Design Line.

When it comes to parking the MOVEO® panels, there are six stacking alternatives and each takes up a relatively small area – which benefits the general aesthetics of the room – and their light weight have little effect on the structural integrity of the building.
