The Smart Gate Lock U500 is particularly relevant for the gate and access control industry, bringing smart locking technology to external entrances that have traditionally relied on mechanical keys, keypads or separate access control systems. The lock is also expected to support Matter over Thread, helping it integrates with major smart home platforms.

Planned features include fingerprint unlocking, numeric password entry, NFC access, app control, auto-locking, emergency unlocking methods, USB-C emergency power and up to 10 months of battery life.

“Strong partnerships are not defined by systems or processes”

Good partnerships in the door industry aren’t built on price lists and purchase orders alone. For HOPPE (UK) and Pendle Doors, it’s about picking up the phone, solving problems together and having the confidence to be honest about what works and what does not...

Here, Andy Syms, National Sales Manager at HOPPE (UK), and Darran Mowe, Supply Chain & Technical Operations Director at Pendle Doors, talk about collaboration, technical support and why strong supplier relationships matter more than ever in today’s market. And how their own connection has developed into part technical collaboration, part day to day problem solving, and part long term planning…

A partnership built on trust and alignment

Andy Syms has been working with Pendle Doors for around four years, and for him the relationship has been built as much on people as it has on product.

“Pendle Doors is a highly efficient operation,” he says. “Everything is manufactured in house and they have a large scale setup across production and storage. But what really stands out is the relationship. We get on well and that comes from trust and everyone pulling in the same direction.”

For Andy, that sense of alignment is what separates a transactional supplier relationship from something more meaningful. It is not just about supplying hardware, but about being embedded in the way customers operate and plan.

And, at Pendle Doors, the feeling is mutual. While HOPPE is a key hardware supplier, the relationship is described less in terms of procurement and more in terms of collaboration that develops over time.

“Day to day, it is not always about constant interaction,” Darran explains. “As products become established within our processes, the partnership really comes into its own in product development and innovation. That is where it feels most active and most valuable.”

When new projects come into play, both sides describe a two way flow of ideas rather than a one directional supply chain. Suggestions are shared early, reviewed collaboratively, and often refined together before decisions are made.

“We can suggest something and HOPPE will come back with solutions or alternatives we may not have considered,” Darran says. “Likewise, when HOPPE brings a new product to market, we get sight of it early and assess whether it is a good fit for us.”

That openness is especially important in a sector where timing, specification and compliance all carry increasing weight.

Communication, trust and honesty

If there is one theme that runs through the relationship, it is communication and trust.

Andy Syms is clear that this is what keeps partnerships working in a sector where small misalignments can quickly become costly.

“Supplier relationships work best when there’s clear and open communication about what’s happening, whether that is short term or long term,” he says. “With Pendle Doors, it is a cliché to say there is an open door policy, but there genuinely is. They can call us at any time.”

That openness cuts both ways. Rather than information sitting in silos, both teams describe a working rhythm where updates, concerns and developments are shared early enough to actually influence outcomes.

Darran sees that as essential, particularly as technical and regulatory requirements continue to evolve.

“It’s about working together early and staying aligned,” he says. “That way, we can make sure everything meets the right standards without unnecessary delays.”

For Andy, that point is non negotiable.

“For all of the above, we have one answer, honesty,” he says. “It is not the best policy, it is the only policy. Keeping in touch with one another and making sure information flows both ways.”

That transparency also helps avoid one of the biggest risks in supplier and manufacturer relationships, late stage misalignment. When communication breaks down, time, cost and testing effort can all be wasted.

Instead, both sides describe a rhythm of early conversations that allow decisions to be shaped before they become locked in.

Technical collaboration, testing and EXAPs

As the industry continues to evolve, technical requirements are becoming more complex and more critical to get right at an early stage. For HOPPE (UK) and Pendle Doors, that has made early collaboration around testing and specification an essential part of how they work together.

A key shift in recent years has been the move away from traditional Field of Application approaches towards EXAPs (extended applications), alongside wider changes in testing standards and compliance expectations.

“Primary testing is really important to us as we build our portfolio,” Darran says. “And support from HOPPE is key.”

Rather than stepping in only at the supply stage, HOPPE is involved earlier in the process, helping to shape decisions before testing takes place.

“There is a lot of change for door manufacturers at the moment,” Andy says. “Building Safety Act requirements, evolving testing standards and different fields of application, it is all happening in real time. Supporting customers through that is intrinsic to what we do.”

Darran agrees that early engagement is now essential.

“This is where we are discussing requirements and getting specialist input to determine whether the testing is likely to be successful,” he explains. “We listen to that expert knowledge to help form our final decisions.”

The benefit of that approach is not just efficiency, but confidence. When technical teams understand each other’s systems and constraints, decisions can be made with far greater certainty.

“Without that level of understanding between both parties, there is potential for wasted time and money testing products or systems which may never have been viable,” Darran says. “If something is not viable or does not have the correct specification, that information has to be shared early to make sure the final product is fit for purpose.”

Feedback, innovation and bespoke solutions

Beyond testing and compliance, much of the relationship is shaped by a continuous exchange of feedback from the market.

“We listen to what the market is asking for and feed that back to HOPPE,” Darran says. “Generally, there is either already a solution in place or there is a willingness to innovate and adapt.”

One of the clearest examples of collaboration in action is the development of personalised hardware, including branded hinges supplied by HOPPE and stamped with the Pendle Doors logo.

“These hinges carry their own Declaration of Performance and give a very clear point of identification,” Darran says. “It just sets us apart a little.”

For Andy, this kind of bespoke support reflects a wider approach.

“Personalised service and support is key,” he says. “Relationships span many years and while the standard of service remains consistent, the experience is always tailored to the individual customer.”

Trust, culture and the future of partnerships

Trust in the relationship is also grounded in culture and shared values.

“Trust is gained through the quality of the business in general,” Darran says. “Values and culture drive everything else. We believe HOPPE align with us in many ways, from being a family owned business through to their integrity when it comes to compliance.”

That alignment helps create stability in a sector where pressures are increasing and expectations are rising.

Looking ahead, both sides expect more partnerships to follow this model as the industry continues to change.

“As legislation changes, I think this will become more prevalent,” Darran says. “Options in the wider market are narrowing, so working relationships between brands will naturally become stronger.”

For Andy, the underlying principle remains simple.

“Relationships span many years,” he concludes. “We maintain a high standard of service across all customers, but there is also a personalised element to how we support each one.”

In the end, both sides return to the same idea. Strong partnerships are not defined by systems or processes alone, but by communication, trust and a willingness to be open when it matters most.

Growing Through Downturn - Leadership, Innovation and Opportunity in Challenging Markets

It is easy to be optimistic when markets are buoyant. Demand is strong, order books are healthy and growth can sometimes feel like it is happening naturally. The real test of leadership comes when economic conditions become more challenging. When investment decisions are delayed, projects are scrutinised more heavily and businesses across the supply chain face increasing pressure on costs, confidence and margins...

The entrance systems sector, like many parts of the construction industry, has experienced its share of challenges in recent years. Economic uncertainty, inflationary pressures, skills shortages and shifting regulatory requirements have all influenced the environment in which businesses operate.

Yet difficult markets should not simply be viewed as something to endure. They can also provide an opportunity to rethink, innovate and strengthen the foundations for future growth.

"The businesses that emerge strongest from challenging periods are often those that continue to invest, adapt and focus on delivering genuine value to customers," says Ken Price, Managing Director of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA). "Growth doesn't stop during difficult periods. It simply requires a different approach."

Looking Beyond Products to Solutions

One of the most significant shifts across many sectors is a move from selling individual products to delivering complete solutions.

Customers are increasingly looking for partners who can help solve problems rather than simply supply components. Whether that relates to accessibility, compliance, fire safety, security, energy efficiency or user experience, the conversation is often broader than a single product specification.

For manufacturers and suppliers, this presents an opportunity to review product portfolios and consider how products can be grouped and positioned around customer needs.

Product lifecycle management is not simply about introducing new products. It is about understanding which products provide added value, which have reached the end of their commercial lifecycle (technically, aesthetically or through lack of customer demand) and where investment should be focused to meet emerging market requirements.

Rationalising product ranges can improve efficiency, simplify customer choice and create clearer market propositions. At the same time, investment in innovation remains essential.

"The most successful innovations are often those that respond directly to identifiable challenges faced by customers, installers, building owners and end users," says Ken. "The businesses that maintain a clear understanding of customer needs are often the ones best positioned to identify opportunities, even during periods of economic uncertainty."

Innovation Born from Necessity

Some of the most significant innovations in entrance systems have emerged not during periods of prosperity, but during periods of challenge.

COVID-19 is an obvious example. Faced with unprecedented restrictions, the industry responded quickly and creatively. Existing technologies were adapted, new applications were developed and businesses found practical ways to help society reopen safely.

Functions around powered pedestrian doors became part of wider strategies to reduce touchpoints and improve hygiene. Entrance systems were incorporated into solutions designed to manage foot traffic, control occupancy levels and support social distancing requirements. Products were adapted and repositioned to solve new challenges almost overnight.

"What began as a response to an immediate crisis demonstrated something important about our sector. Innovation is often born from necessity. Businesses adapted incredibly quickly to help organisations manage access, control movement through buildings and create safer environments."

Many of those developments delivered benefits that extended far beyond the pandemic itself. It shone a light on the importance of regular maintenance, technical integration and smart building development.

"The lesson remains relevant," reflects Ken. "Challenging markets should not simply be viewed as obstacles to growth. They can also become catalysts for innovation, collaboration and change."

Culture Matters More Than Ever

While products and services are important, organisational culture often becomes the defining factor during difficult trading conditions.

When markets become more challenging, it is natural for businesses to focus heavily on financial performance and operational efficiency. These are clearly important considerations. However, organisations should be careful not to overlook the role people play in driving long-term success.

Motivated, engaged and empowered teams are more likely to identify opportunities, solve problems and deliver exceptional service.

Leadership during uncertain times requires visibility, communication and trust. People need to understand not only the challenges facing a business but also the strategy for navigating them.

The most resilient organisations are often those where employees understand how their individual contribution connects to wider business objectives, invests in supportive cultures including motivation and morale. This can help create ‘an employer brand’ which in itself can support recruitment.

This is particularly relevant in sectors such as entrance systems, where technical expertise, customer service and specialist knowledge remain critical differentiators.

"Investment in human resources, workplace culture and professional development should not be viewed as a luxury that can be postponed until conditions improve," reiterates Ken. "The skills developed during difficult periods often become the foundation for future growth."

Within ADSA, this commitment is reflected through training programmes, qualifications, apprenticeships and professional development initiatives designed to support competence across the sector.

"If we want to grow as an industry, we have to continue investing in people," he says. "Competence, professionalism and technical expertise will remain critical differentiators."

Can You Market Yourself Out of a Downturn?

Marketing alone cannot overcome fundamental business challenges. However, effective marketing can play a significant role in helping businesses maintain visibility, build confidence and position themselves for future opportunities.

One of the most common mistakes businesses make during difficult trading periods is reducing marketing activity at precisely the moment when it becomes most important.

When markets contract, competition for available opportunities inevitably increases. Customers become more selective and decision-making processes become longer and more complex.

Businesses that continue to communicate consistently, demonstrate expertise and remain visible often place themselves in a stronger position when investment decisions are eventually made.

There are encouraging signs that many organisations recognise this. Recent industry research suggests marketing investment is expected to increase despite ongoing economic uncertainty, reflecting a growing recognition that visibility and brand strength remain critical drivers of business growth.

"One of the biggest mistakes organisations can make is disappearing from view when conditions become more difficult. Visibility creates confidence. Confidence creates opportunity,” states Ken.

Marketing should not be viewed solely as promotion. It is about education, engagement and leadership. Technical content, thought leadership, case studies, training events, webinars and industry collaboration all help reinforce credibility and demonstrate value.

The question businesses should ask is whether they can afford not to market themselves while competitors remain visible.

The Role of Manufacturers in Driving Growth

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have a particularly important role to play in supporting growth across the entrance systems sector.

Manufacturers often sit at the centre of innovation, technical development and product advancement. Their investment decisions can have a significant influence on the wider market. However, their role extends far beyond simply bringing new products to market.

To drive sustainable growth, manufacturers need confidence in their product ranges and a clear understanding of where future opportunities lie. That requires continual assessment of product lifecycles, identifying where products continue to meet market needs, where ranges may need rationalising and where investment in new product development can deliver the greatest value.

"Product development should never happen in isolation," reflects Ken. The most successful manufacturers are constantly gathering intelligence from customers, installers, specifiers and the wider market. They are looking at what people want today, what they are likely to need tomorrow and where challenges are emerging.”

Understanding customer wants, needs and aspirations has become increasingly important as building requirements evolve. Issues such sustainability, for example, continue to shape purchasing decisions and specification requirements.

Manufacturers that actively monitor these trends are often better placed to anticipate demand rather than simply react to it.

"In many respects, this is where marketing becomes far more than a communications function. Good marketing is about insight. It's about understanding the market, identifying opportunities and using that intelligence to inform business decisions."

This intelligence can then be used to shape product strategies, guide investment decisions and support future innovation.

"The strongest businesses are constantly listening," he continues. "They are gathering feedback, analysing trends and using that information to evolve their offer. That might mean adapting existing products, developing entirely new solutions or grouping products differently to better address customer challenges."

This approach has become increasingly important as customers move away from purchasing individual products and towards seeking integrated solutions.

"Customers rarely wake up looking for a product," Ken adds. "They are looking for a solution to a problem. The manufacturers that understand those problems and design their offer around solving them are often the ones that create long-term growth."

Looking Ahead

Economic cycles are inevitable. Markets rise, markets fall and external factors will continue to influence the operating environment for every business. The challenge for leaders is not to predict every change but to build organisations that are resilient enough to adapt.

That resilience comes from maintaining a clear strategic focus, investing in people, understanding customer needs and continuing to innovate even when conditions are difficult.

For the entrance systems sector, there remains much to be positive about. The need for safe, accessible, secure and compliant entrance systems is not diminishing. If anything, the importance of these considerations continues to grow.

"The opportunity for all of us is to ensure we are ready to meet those needs, not only when conditions improve, but while the challenges remain," concludes Ken. "The businesses that achieve that balance will be the ones best positioned to lead the next phase of growth for our sector."

In July 2024, the Titan folding window restrictor by Jackloc was awarded Secured by Design (SBD) accreditation, marking a significant milestone in opening window safety and security innovation. The achievement recognises the product’s strength, reliability, durability, and ability to help prevent crime, while reinforcing Jackloc’s longstanding commitment to designing industry-leading window restrictors.

The Titan lockable window restrictor was specifically engineered to deliver both safety and security. Designed to prevent falls from windows while protecting against opportunistic burglary attempts through opening windows, the Titan provides reassurance for homeowners, property managers, and building operators alike.

Yale is launching its new Lockmaster 24 multipoint lock, combining proven mechanical security with smart capability while supporting complete doorsets designed to meet PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 requirements.

The latest evolution of Yale’s trusted multipoint locking platform, Lockmaster 24 brings SensCheck™ compatible innovation to a product built on robust mechanical performance. At its core is a 20mm deep throw centre hook, designed to deliver strong engagement and consistent security every time the door is locked.

An enhanced security centre case adds strength where it matters most, while Lockmaster’s signature hook and pin configuration helps improve resistance to attack. Together, these features provide dependable protection across a wide range of door applications.

DHF highlights growing commercial opportunities for hardware members through EPDs and carbon transparency

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is encouraging hardware members to prepare for a significant change in the way products are specified, evaluated and procured across the public sector, as environmental performance and carbon transparency become increasingly important considerations in purchasing decisions.

A growing emphasis on Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), as well as the development of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), is creating new opportunities for manufacturers and suppliers able to demonstrate strong environmental credentials, transparent supply chains and a commitment to responsible business practices.

Across the construction and built environment sectors, public sector organisations, contractors, consultants and procurement teams are under increasing pressure to demonstrate measurable progress against Net Zero commitments, sustainability targets and wider environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives. As a result, the demand for reliable environmental information is growing rapidly. EPDs are becoming a key part of this process.

An Environmental Product Declaration is a standardised and independently verified document that provides transparent information about a product's environmental impact throughout its lifecycle. This includes factors such as raw material extraction, manufacturing processes, transportation, installation, use and end-of-life disposal or recycling.

By providing consistent environmental data, EPDs enable specifiers and procurement professionals to compare products more effectively and make informed decisions based on sustainability performance. The increasing use of EPDs is being driven by a range of factors, including whole-life carbon assessments, sustainable procurement requirements, Net Zero strategies, BREEAM and other environmental assessment schemes, and growing ESG reporting obligations.

Organisations responsible for delivering public buildings and infrastructure projects are increasingly expected to demonstrate not only that environmental impacts have been considered, but that product choices can be supported by independently verified evidence.

In addition to the growing importance of EPDs, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is expected to place further emphasis on carbon reporting and supply chain transparency. CBAM has been developed to address carbon emissions associated with imported goods and materials, helping to reduce carbon leakage, improve emissions transparency and encourage lower-carbon manufacturing practices.

Although the initial focus of CBAM is on high-carbon sectors and raw materials, its influence is expected to extend throughout wider manufacturing and construction supply chains over time, particularly where products contain materials such as steel and aluminium. As carbon reporting requirements continue to evolve, organisations are likely to face increasing scrutiny regarding the environmental impact of the products and materials they specify and purchase.

For DHF hardware members, the relationship between EPDs and CBAM is particularly important. While CBAM focuses on carbon emissions associated with imported products and materials, EPDs provide a much broader picture of environmental performance across the entire product lifecycle. Together, they support greater transparency, improved reporting and more informed decision-making throughout the supply chain. As public sector procurement increasingly focuses on embodied carbon, sustainability performance and ESG objectives, suppliers that can demonstrate both environmental transparency and a clear understanding of carbon impacts are likely to be viewed more favourably.

These developments are already influencing procurement and specification decisions across a wide range of public sector projects. New-build developments, refurbishment programmes, infrastructure schemes, transport projects, healthcare facilities, education estates, housing developments and government buildings are all seeing increased focus on sustainability and carbon performance. In many cases, environmental performance now forms part of tender evaluation criteria, meaning that suppliers are not only competing on quality and price but also on their ability to demonstrate responsible environmental practices and transparent supply chain management.

"Environmental performance is becoming an increasingly important part of product specification and procurement,” explains DHF’s CEO, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “Public sector organisations and major contractors are under growing pressure to demonstrate sustainability, carbon reduction and responsible sourcing throughout their projects. The conversation has moved beyond simply supplying a compliant product. Increasingly, organisations want to understand the wider environmental impact of the products they are specifying and purchasing. They are looking for evidence, transparency and credible data that can support their sustainability objectives. For DHF members, this presents a genuine opportunity. Businesses that invest in environmental reporting, understand their supply chains and can provide independently verified information through EPDs will be well positioned to meet these changing expectations. DHF currently offers fourteen generic EPDs for its Building Hardware members with a further one presently in production.

“Many public sector clients are now expected to demonstrate progress towards Net Zero goals and wider ESG commitments. As a result, architects, consultants, contractors and procurement teams are paying much closer attention to environmental performance when making specification decisions. Members who can provide robust environmental information are likely to find themselves in a stronger position when competing for work. EPDs can help demonstrate transparency, support whole-life carbon assessments and provide confidence that sustainability claims are supported by evidence and we are proud to offer these generic EPDs to our Building Hardware members and encourage more to take advantage of the opportunity to be part of the scheme."

DHF believes that the trend towards greater environmental accountability will continue to strengthen in the coming years. As sustainability requirements become more embedded within procurement processes, environmental transparency may increasingly become a prerequisite rather than a differentiator. The Federation is therefore encouraging members to consider how they communicate their sustainability credentials to the market. This includes ensuring that customers are aware of any EPDs available for products, providing information about responsible sourcing practices and engaging proactively with specifiers, contractors and procurement professionals.

Early engagement during the specification stage is becoming increasingly important. By discussing sustainability performance at the beginning of a project, suppliers can help clients understand the environmental benefits of their products and support wider project objectives relating to carbon reduction and responsible procurement. DHF also believes that membership of the Federation can play an important role in these conversations. DHF membership demonstrates a commitment to industry best practice, technical competence, professionalism and compliance. These qualities align closely with the objectives of public sector procurement teams seeking confidence in both products and suppliers.
