Traka 21 from Mul-T-Lock

Mul-T-Lock UK now offers the Traka21, stand-alone key management system. Traka21 combines innovative RFID technology and robust design for locksmiths to offer small and medium sized businesses intelligent management of up to 21 keys or keysets in an affordable plug and play unit.

Traka21 authorises, secures and monitors all keys, automatically controlling and recording when a key is used and by whom – information which is made available either through the cabinet’s display or by exporting on a USB pen drive.

Easy to operate, the user can simply enter a unique PIN code to gain access to the cabinet, with green LEDs indicating those keys to which this user has access. The user cannot remove keys highlighted by the red LEDs, which continue to remain locked in place.

To return the key, the user enters their PIN to access the cabinet again, and an amber light indicates the return position. Simple reports can be reviewed on the screen, and exported data such as audit trails can be viewed and manipulated on a computer using Excel or similar.

Kevin Menzies, Sales Manager for Mul-T-Lock UK, said:
“Although commercial security is becoming increasingly sophisticated, there is still a lack of management when it comes to business critical keys.

“In some cases keys are often left in open view or unsecure locations, meaning they can easily get lost or taken by unauthorised persons. This creates the risk of losing security of access to buildings, facilities, secure areas, equipment, machinery, lockers, cabinets and vehicles.
“Traka21’s market-leading, innovative plug and play system is a simple, efficient and cost-effective solution for locksmiths to offer, helping trace and account for every key or keyset, to ensure security is not jeopardised.”
For further information on the Traka21 or other products and services available from Mul-T-Lock UK, please visit www.mul-t-lock.com

UKTI assists Selectrite Hardware with Gateway to Global Growth

Warwickshire based manufacturing company Selectrite Hardware have obtained the globally renowned UL certification for their unique product, their MK2 fire door selector.

With the help of the International Trade Team based in Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber, various UKTI workshops and signing on to the Gateway to Global Growth programme, Selectrite Hardware have developed their export strategy to ensure that their product can be used within global construction projects.

The firm have been providing their door selector through UK distributors as a CE marked product for the last 20 years, however it was only when signing on to Gateway to Global Growth through their local Chamber of commerce that they saw the potential for further growth overseas. The UL marking for their door selector ensures that the product can be specified for projects throughout the United Arab Emirates, North America and Canada.

Mark Townend, the managing director of Selectrite Hardware commented:
‘Obtaining the UL mark for our product was the obvious next step for us as a business and we are excited to see what happens in 2015’.
Brian Mountford, International Trade Adviser at the Chamber of Commerce said,
‘It is great to see Selectrite Hardware making strategic decisions to open up new overseas markets. This a good example of the help that UKTI can give to companies to help them develop new international markets.’

Austin 7 derivatives are lining up for the National Rally in July

BMW DA3 'Wartburg' that is expected to come from Germany

The theme of the National Austin 7 rally, held in the grounds of the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, on Sunday 5th July, is 'Austin 7s and their Cousins' and already a unique collection of rare vehicles is lining up to join the more familiar models of Austin 7 that form the main displays.

The organisers have recently heard from a group of enthusiasts in Germany who are intending to bring their 'BMW Dixi' cars to the rally and it is expected that they will be joined by a substantial group of French 'Rosengarts'. These are derivatives of the pre-war Austin 7 and were manufactured abroad under licence.

With the possibility of at least a dozen, very rare, military versions of the Austin 7 also attending the event, the special display areas on the rally field are guaranteed to be of huge interest to enthusiasts and the general public.

The rally is organised by the 750 Motor Club and is open to all Austin 7 owners regardless of whether or not they are club members. Austins form the core of the event, but pre-1975 vehicles of all makes are invited to attend and will have a designated parking area on the rally field.

Members of the Trials section of the 750 Motor Club will be demonstrating the extraordinary ability of drivers and the amazing agility of their purpose-built cars on the steep slopes of the rally field banking. There will be a large variety of autojumble and spares stalls, and, throughout the day informal driving challenges will be taking place in the arena.

The National Austin 7 Rally is a wonderful and entertaining day out for enthusiasts and for families alike - and a great place to come if you are contemplating buying one of these ever-popular and relatively inexpensive pre-war cars. Austin 7 owners are among the friendliest of old car enthusiasts and will happily chat and give advice to prospective owners. Beaulieu is home to a wide variety of attractions and the rally entry ticket also gives access to the historic Palace House and Gardens and the National Motor Museum.

The event is sponsored by Warranty Direct Limited and RH Specialist Insurance. Full details and entry forms will be found on the website: www.750mc.co.uk/austin7. Gates will open at 9am.

About the Austin 7 and 750 Motor Club

The Austin 7 was the first truly mass-produced British car. In the 1920s and 1930s it changed the lives of ordinary people by giving them the opportunity to buy an affordable motor car for the first time. The 750 Motor Club was founded in 1939. www.750mc.co.uk

Alutech – Rolling ahead at R+T Stuttgart

The Alutech Group of Companies, including Gunther Tore received some attention at the recent R + T exhibition. Alutech were one of the 3 main sponsors of the exhibition with banners and advertising around the venue.
In 2015, the geographical spread of visitors to the exhibition has expanded to 125 countries, including the Middle East, Asia, Australia, Oceania, North, Central and South America.
Their roller shutter stand, demonstrated the complete range of insulated roller garage door components, typically supplied to local manufacturers to manufacture their own shutters. Alutech are proud of their long history of manufacturing extruded and insulated garage door components and enjoy a very good reputation for product quality and innovation in the UK and European markets.
Many new products were shown; these included a 'Hurricane' shutter that is designed to withstand very high winds in exposed locations. Manufactured from twin skinned extruded aluminium profiles, with a cleaver method of end locking the lath to prevent it from being blown out of the guides.
Due for launch during 2015 are some new colours for 77mm foam filled garage door lath, recognising the trend for pastel shades, these include Chartwell Green and Graphite. Graphite is especially interesting in that it will be one of the few metallic effect laths that are available for garage doors.
From customer feedback, lock rings for 70mm octagonal tube have always been an issue by marking the inside of the door curtain. Alutech have developed an auto-locking ring that is coated with a material that reduces friction between the ring and the curtain, almost eliminating the marks that appear over time. The same ring is now made in two parts making it really easy to install, and especially useful for repairs, as the barrel now doesn't need to be dismantled - you just simply clip the rings onto the barrel in-situ.
For samples of the new colours, auto-locks and rings or further details on how easy it is to manufacture roller shutters, please talk to JD (UK) Ltd., who are the official Alutech distributor in the UK on 01924 472 924 or email steve@jdukltd.co.uk.

Hörmann to provide RIBA CPD training sessions across UK

After a rise in demand from architects looking to gain specialist training, garage and industrial door market leader Hörmann has extended its RIBA Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions across the country.

As a chartered member of RIBA, you are obliged to undertake at least 35 hours of CPD training each year. Hörmann began providing the courses last year and after significant interest from architects, has added further locations for 2015.

Hörmann's CPD seminar, Specifying the Correct Door, aims to teach architects the importance of recognising exactly which style of door would be best to use in their projects, as different models have unique conditions. Learning material has been designed to fit into the mandatory core curriculum areas.

Architects need information, such as opening clearances or side and headroom requirements to ensure correct installation and operation of a door, for specific applications.

Hörmann's CPD training will advise them on both the beneficial qualities and potential challenges that come with each type of door, including general costs and design options.

There will be six sessions taking place across the country throughout the year, each lasting around one and a half hours. Training will be available in Birmingham on 12 March, Bristol on 30 April, Glasgow on 14 May, London on 3 September, Belfast on 10 September and Newcastle on 1 October.

For more information about Hörmann's CPD training opportunities and to book your place on one of its seminars, please call 01530 513020 or visit www.ribacpd.com and search for Hörmann.

Jewers' new fully glazed doors improve productivity

Sliding and folding door specialist, Jewers, has recently extended its Phoenix product range with the introduction of a fully glazed door system.

Jewers is primarily known for solid insulated panel doors, however, this development has come about as a result of a demand for natural light in buildings. Not only can daylight lead to substantial energy savings but, extensive research shows health, productivity and economic benefits as a direct result of exposure to natural daylight.

The fully glazed system utilises the same tracks, hardware, seals, drive system and safety systems as standard Swift, Osprey and Kingfisher doors and glazing can be a choice of double or triple glazed polycarbonate or double glazed toughened glass, all of which provide excellent U-values. There is also a full colour spectrum available for the door leaves, including dark greys, blacks and metallic finishes.

Fully glazed doors are currently available for openings up to 4500mm high (taller by design) and of unlimited width, so whether for a workshop, university, fire station, small hangar or car showroom, the glazed Phoenix door is a natural choice.

Contact Mark Jewers on 01767 317090 for further information or if you would like to become a reseller of our market-leading sliding and folding doors.

Famed ex-works Aston Martin Ulster ‘LM19’ will be Star of Bonhams Festival of Speed Sale

Ex-Works Racing Aston Martin Ulster Team Car, LM19, estimated at £1,600,000 - £2,200,000, is an early consignment for Bonhams Festival of Speed Sale.

The LM series of pre-war Aston Martin Works Team Cars were individually numbered from LM1 to LM23. As the initials indicate, they were produced to challenge the world’s best in the prestigious annual Le Mans 24-hour race.

The first team cars (LM1 and LM2) faced the challenge of Le Mans in 1928, and over the next seven years the LM series developed impressively. By 1935, with several Le Mans tries under their belts, this series of now much-coveted Aston Martin Works Team sports cars produced four very special LMs, commonly regarded as being some of the very best of all pre-war sports cars. These were described by A.C. ‘Bert’ Bertelli, chief designer and co-owner of Aston Martin, as “the best cars I ever built”.

Of these four cars, three – LM18, 19, and 20 – were built to compete in the prestigious and intensely gruelling Le Mans 24-hour ‘Grand Prix d’Endurance’ in France.

Aston Martin LM19 then had an eventful race. With Thomas Fothringham at the wheel it was running very strongly and disputing the class lead, but after an intense nine hours it sadly crashed, leaving its sister Works entry, LM20, to soldier on, finish third overall, and win for Aston Martin the coveted Biennial Cup.

LM19 was then re-built by the Works and taken to Ards public-road circuit in Northern Ireland, for that year’s Tourist Trophy Race. With the extrovert gentleman driver Charlie Martin behind the wheel, LM19 proved fastest amongst the pack of Works Team cars, only for a faulty batch of pipework to cause loss of oil pressure – eventually sending Martin and the rest of the Works Team cars into the pits. This caused such significant delay that LM19 fell two laps short of the required minimum distance to qualify as a finisher.

In 1936 this Works Team Aston Martin was then sent to Italy to compete in the legendary Mille Miglia, the thousand-mile road race. Driven by Tom Clarke and Maurice Falkner, the car yet again performed well, demonstrating its design’s characteristic pace and driveability by leading its class by an hour-and-a-half at the Rome control. However, after crossing the Apennines during the race’s return leg, a valve burned out, causing the car to retire at Fano, another disappointing end to a terrific performance.
“What we have here is a pre-war ‘Works’ racing car of excellent provenance, built to compete at the highest level of endurance racing,” said James Knight, Bonhams Group Director of Motoring. “We have successfully sold two Ulsters in as many years, but neither of them was one of the famed LM Team Cars. Now LM19 offered here ticks many boxes for the serious collector: it’s a true Works Team Car, it is to the ultimate specification, and it is a veteran of the three blue-riband sports car events of the day – the Le Mans 24-hour, the RAC TT and the Mille Miglia with the additional cherry on the cake being the 1936 French Grand Prix outing, driven by none other than the brilliant Dick Seaman.

“The car’s exceptional provenance includes it having been cherished by the same family since 1969, and it is in the fine condition to match. If you want an Ulster with impeccable credentials, you need look no farther than LM19.”
Bonhams Festival of Sale takes place on 26 June in Goodwood, Chichester.

Hörmann expands projects team with manager appointment

Leading door and loading bay manufacturer Hörmann has added to its projects team with the appointment of Karen Garnham, following an increase in demand for industrial installations.

Karen joins as project manager, handling all aspects of an order from the initial site survey, through to product delivery. An experienced contracts and operations manager, Karen is helping the Hörmann team to handle rising orders while maintaining a strong focus on customer service.

Although the new role is focussed on industrial installations, Karen is also an expert in the manufacturer's domestic products, having spent four years working for The Garage Door Centre in Wellingborough.

Karen commented:
"I've wanted to work for Hörmann for some time, so this is a wonderful opportunity for me. I know first hand how good the products are, having overseen their installation for a number of years. It's exciting to now be working on commercial projects and helping to ensure a smooth process from order to delivery."
Hörmann is continuing to grow following a successful end to 2014, which saw the company achieve an increase in turnover of over 10 per cent. With industrial projects having a notable impact on this figure, Karen's appointment is an important move to further strengthen the department.

David Newcombe, managing director, said:
"Karen is an asset to the Hörmann team and we're very pleased to have her on board. She already has a strong knowledge of our domestic product range and that, combined with her operational experience, will no doubt help her to thrive."
With 2015 looking set to be another busy year for the manufacturer, Hörmann is planning to add further new recruits over the coming months.

MLA Member Keeping House of Commons Safe and Sound

A BBC documentary has given an insight into the day-to-day work of MLA board member and House of Commons locksmith, Peter Wosahlo.

Peter, a board member of the UK’s leading locksmith association, the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), has been featured on recent fly-on-the-wall documentary ‘Inside the Commons’. The four-part series had unparalleled access to Parliament, where longstanding MLA member Peter Wosahlo is a master locksmith.

Peter, who has been working at the House of Commons for four years after selling his previous business, looks after all the master key systems in the Parliament estate. The House of Commons stipulates that its locksmiths must be a member of the MLA, to ensure the highest standards of locksmithing and security are met.

The BBC filmed for over 300 hours at the House of Commons, including following Peter’s normal workday.

Peter said: “I thoroughly enjoy working at the House of Commons. I would describe my job as normal locksmithing, but with a slight twist - on a day-to-day basis I look after numerous buildings as well as dealing with other issues such as locked out MPs. The types of locks I deal with here are typically antique and heritage locks, which makes for very interesting work.

“Filming with the BBC was brilliant fun, and seeing myself on the TV even better! My whole family came round to watch. It’s something I will remember for years to come.”

Dr. Steffan George

Dr Steffan George, Director of Development at the MLA, added:
“We were delighted to see the work that Peter does being highlighted on ‘Inside the Commons’. Peter has been a member of the MLA for over 35 years and is an active member of the board - we really value his input on new policies, especially coming from such a secure working environment.”
In addition, following on from the MLA logo being found at the Coronation Festival in the grounds of Buckingham Palace in 2013, 2015 has seen it featured in the Houses of Parliament. Peter recently manned a stand at the in-house Facilities Trade Show in Parliament, just showing the high places the MLA logo can now be found.

Avocet Heralds Risc Authority Guidance as a Major Step Forward in the Fight Against Lock-Snapping

Guidance welcome – the RISCAuthority’s
Guidance to Occupiers

Avocet Hardware has welcomed the RISCAuthority’s decision to incorporate an explanation of lock-snapping and the importance of TS007 and SS312 in the fight against it in its latest “Guidance to Occupiers”.

Avocet, which manufactures ABS snap-secure locks, has long campaigned for the insurance industry to play an active role in helping to curtail the rise in lock-snapping and is delighted with what it describes as a major step forward.
“Lock-snapping is a significant issue across large swathes of the country and what makes it so frustrating is that it’s easily preventable, said Rythm Jain Saigal – CEO of Avocet.

“All we need in order to stamp it out is for insurance companies to add TS007 3-star BSI Kitemark or SS312 Diamond accredited locks to their list of Minimum Security Standard products – and maybe take the customer friendly step of compensating those who have to upgrade by offering a reduced premium.

“But to date they have maintained the preposterous stance of insisting on like-for-like replacements for snapped locks, meaning homeowners are doing nothing to prevent a repeat attack.

“We are extremely hopeful that the RISCAuthority’s publication is the first sign of a change in attitude – one that will benefit not just the British public, but the insurers themselves as a result of the significant decrease in break-ins such a measure would deliver.”
Avocet uses Leeds as an example of the impact TS007 3-star and SS312 Diamond accredited locks can have on crime figures.

In the year to October 2012, Leeds City Council fitted over 10,000 of Avocet’s ABS snap secure locks in the east of the city, which alongside other initiatives resulted in a 36 per cent decrease in burglaries in the area.

In addition, locksmiths across the country have been quick to praise the safety of such locks.

Most recently, Bob Callard OBE – a director of Sheffield-based Callard Security said:
“I specified them (ABS) for a client earlier this year, who sadly was burgled last week, or rather he wasn’t. His entire street was hit by a team of ‘snappers’ who made successful entries against a range of properties, apart from his. The sacrificial element of the cylinder parted company in accordance with its design leaving his property safe. His neighbours have all asked him why they were unsuccesful, with the resullt that I have now specified Avocet for them all.”

“There is no doubting the effectiveness of ABS and other TS007 3-star and SS312 Diamond accredited locks,” added Rythm. “What has been in doubt is the commitment of the insurance industry to take the steps needed to broadcast this message in suitable fashion.”

“I firmly believe that the RISCAuthority’s publishing decision signals the beginning of the end for the lock-snappers.”

Ian Harkness with Roy Chamberlain in December
on Ian's actual retirement from the company

Ian Harkness, one of Chamberlain Doors longest serving members of staff has finally hung up his truck keys after 27 years delivering garage doors, electric operators and garage door spares to Chamberlain customers.

Many customers who have been in the industry for many years could set their watch by Ian’s arrival, on time and as promised, week in week out.

Chamberlain Doors estimate that Ian has covered over two million miles in the last 27 years, mostly incident and accident free - an astonishing achievement on todays road network

Roy Chamberlain also estimates that Ian has delivered over 75000 garage doors,  10000 electric operators plus spares and accessories too numerous to count.

Ian Harkness alongside his "25 years on the Road Banner" in 2013
when he reached his 25 year service milestone.
Ian “officially” retired at the age of 65 two years ago but would not let go of his keys and stayed two further years until he finally announced his intended retirement at the young age of 67.

The company thanked Ian for his loyalty, reliability, honesty and great contribution to the company's success over those 27 years. Ian became a great personal friend of everyone at the company, not least company Chairman Roy Chamberlain who would often meet Ian en route and enjoy an evening out and a good curry at whichever local Balti House was available.

Managing director Karen Diggle recalls Ian being so reliable whenever she met customers in the field their comment would again be “We can set our watches by Ian”.

Roy has fond memories of meeting up with Ian at the then Chamberlain depot in Weston Super Mare, always at dawn after early morning drives down the M5, the start of Ian’s journey onwards to Devon and Cornwall, where again, Ian forged some very strong and happy friendships. The West Country was Ian’s main delivery run for many years.

Ian will be enjoying his retirement send off with his wife Patricia when they take advantage of a well earned holiday gift from the company to mark Ian’s magnificent service.

We all wish Ian a very long and happy retirement.
