ADSA tunes up Quartet for Business Support

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has launched Quartet - a new initiative to provide member support across four essential services: HR, legal, health and safety and tax.

The service, delivered in partnership with Quest, includes an online library with more than 450 templates, documents and advice sheets and an advice line for direct contact.

It is available to all ADSA members – from major manufacturers to sole traders - but should prove particularly helpful to support smaller businesses without dedicated in-house teams.

It will help them to:
  • manage problems – such as disciplinary issues, disability requirements, grievance procedures, redundancy/dismissal/pay/capability issues and long-term sickness
  • get answers – to workplace changes such as hybrid working and sick pay
  • stay compliant – on contracts of employment, employee handbooks, understanding responsibilities and changes to legislation
  • support staff – around working practice, maternity, paternity, leave and training

By including Quartet as an additional member benefit, ADSA hopes that it will help businesses save money - reducing outsourcing costs and delivering peace of mind.

Said ADSA managing director Ken Price:
"ADSA membership is great value and this service is a further enhancement to what we offer. We have a range of member organisations from big manufacturers and distributors to micro companies and sole traders.
"Although all our members will be able to access Quartet, we believe that it will be particularly beneficial for smaller companies which have to manage all aspects of business alongside their core service. We hope that it will present a cost-effective solution at a time when business overheads are increasing. It will also provide a service that can be called upon immediately – help at the end of a phone or touch of a button."

ADSA member Kevin Treharne, sales director of Entec Access Systems Limited, said:
"Entec has been a ADSA member for many years and we have always found enormous benefit in its services. It has always been the 'go-to' organisation for technical expertise and training. This new initiative opens-up a much wider range of services that will be of enormous benefit in supporting wider business operations."
For more information on ADSA membership contact: rachel@adsa.org.uk or visit: www.adsa.org.uk

RadioBand3W: When nothing else works

Technicians at JCM, have developed a new Radioband3 version, immune to the interference that can cause gates or doors not to work properly.

Has your automatic door safety system ever stopped working from one day to the other for no apparent reason? Does the same safety system work at one facility and not work at another? Does the system activate the safety mode, and you don't know the reason why? Is it possible that there is now interference in the facility where the gate or door is installed, which was not there before?

There are constant changes in our surroundings that we cannot see. New frequencies are used for communications and alarm systems, new receiving devices and antennae are installed, and frequency inhibitors might be used in the facility area… causing interference that could lead to phantom door movements compromising safety or even failure in control over the installation (the door may remain open).

For systems with a safety mode like JCM's, this mode is activated when there is no communication between the transmitter and the receiver. With safety mode activated, the door cannot close, decreasing control over the installation, or cannot open, preventing users from exiting and entering.

Even with interference, systems without a safety mode allow the door to continue to move without guaranteeing security for the person or body below. This may cause serious damage and additionally, the door does not comply with the safety standards.

In addition to the aforementioned problems, all this causes client discontentment, after-sales calls, plus the economic cost and time of having to go to the facility to check what’s wrong.

JCM got to work on solving this before anyone else. The new RadioBand3W safety system works where other systems do not, ignoring possible interference and guaranteeing human safety and security.

RadioBand3W is the evolution of RadioBand3: the UNIVERSAL radio communication system for safety sensors, compatible with all control panels on the market.

JCM was the first company to develop and commercialise the safety system via radio in 2006, eliminating wires and all the maintenance they required. The reliability of 40 years of experience means that we can also prove the security we offer with our services.

Do you want more information about the RadioBand3W solution? Contact your trusted JCM representative or send an email to aserra@jcm-tech.com.

CL515 Marine Grade is Catch of the Day for CES UK

CES UK is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of locking systems and electronic access control systems for public and industrial buildings. It provides high-quality and innovative security systems which offer reliable and convenient protection to both people and valuables.

Access that goes with the flow

Located on the River Medway, CES require a robust and reliable solution for its external warehouse door that can manage large volumes of traffic and withstand harsh outdoor environments. Due to its riverside setting, it is fundamental that CES invest in a lock that resists exposure to moisture to prevent damage.

To help improve warehouse operations and ensure that both employees and visitors have seamless access, CES need a lock that is durable and suitable for frequent use. It is important that the access control solution can permit and restrict access to its warehouse to help replenish and protect stock and equipment.

Reliability come rain or shine

Codelocks recommended its CL515 Mortice Latch Black Marine Grade finish lock. Specially designed for coastal and harsh weather environment applications, the CL515MG offers simple keyless access via a unique code.

Helping to minimise inconvenience and reduce time spent waiting for access, the lock also offers a code-free function, perfect for day-to-day use when unrestricted access may be required.

Providing flexible and convenient entry for visitors, the CL515MG allows couriers to drop off deliveries without having to ask staff for access, especially important when handling heavy goods.

With its large lever handles, the CL515MG’s robust and heavy-duty nature is a simple but effective security system, ideal for securing areas that need an extra level of protection. Perfectly suited to withstand constant use, CES feel at ease knowing that its property, stock and employees are safe and secure.

Mario Del-Signore, managing director at CES UK said,
“As we are located by a river, we needed a product that can protect against the harsh elements and surroundings we work in. The CL515MG ticked all the right boxes.
“The CL515MG is a solid and robust product, you can feel the quality just by pressing the buttons. It is far more superior to what I’ve seen in the marketplace and this is important as it aligns with our CES products. We sell quality products here, so we want quality products on our own door.”
About the CL500 Marine Grade range

The CL500MG range is a reliable and flexible access control solution, providing sophistication to any application with its aesthetically pleasing sleek, black finish. With over 2000 non-sequential code combinations this lock gives simple coded access to buildings that experience high traffic.

Ideal for outbuildings, construction sites, marina’s and homes by the water, the CL500MG range resists exposure to moisture and helps to prevent damage caused by corroding. CL500MG range is salt spray tested – performing 1000 hours*. It is also compatible with Codelocks Fire Kit packs that can be fitted to latch locks for 30- or 60-minute fire doors. Tested in accordance with BS EN 1634-1:2008.

It’s plain sailing from here

CES UK need a solution that helps to manage the access of its busy warehouse and is also suitable for its riverside environment. As well as adding an additional layer of security, CES require a robust, reliable and high-quality lock that is durable and offers staff instant access with minimal effort.

“We are really happy with the CL515MG. Access to our warehouse is now far easier and saves time, as staff can simply walk up to the door, push a button and they are in. If someone was to leave the company, the lock is really simple to re-configure, which is incredibly helpful when managing many employees.
“Codelocks has an outstanding name for quality in the marketplace and its technical expertise is outstanding. We know that when we buy its products, we also receive first class service and support.
“A few days after the lock was installed, I received a phone call from Codelocks to see how we were getting on. I would highly recommend Codelocks to installers, locksmiths and everyone in the marketplace.”

Mul-T-Lock Drives Van Security Campaign

Mul-T-Lock UK is urging van owners to update their vehicle security in light of the latest crime statistics.

With the latest results[1] showing the annual rate of thefts involving vans in the UK could rise to more than 20,000 vans by 2030, the security specialist is encouraging van operators and owners to consider simple solutions to protect their vehicles and contents.

The same research predicts that 12,000 vans will be stolen in 2022, which is a rise of 169% over the last five years. Tools are the favourite target of van thieves, with 67% of van break-ins resulting in stolen tools and equipment.

Says Claire Blakemore, Managing Director of Mul-T-Lock UK:
“The statistics speak for themselves when it comes to van crime and will only increase with time. They will continue to have devastating affects - whether a sole trader, small or large fleet operator – the potential for loss of livelihood and significant cost implications is extremely serious.”

Mul-T-Lock aims to raise awareness, utilising its all-in-one ArmaDLock® security device, created uniquely for vans as a bolt-on solution to act as a significant visual deterrent to the opportunist thief.

Designed for ease of installation on a new vehicle or as a retrofit to an existing vehicle, and supplied with secure fixings, Mul-T-Lock® ArmaDLock® is an all-in-one non-corrosive lock body solution that offers no hanging parts that could damage the paintwork around the lock.

The unique angled lock body of Mul-T-Lock® ArmaDLock® has been carefully created to deflect blows from a hammer and together with the steel locking bolt adds extra protection for the doors.

Claire concluded: “Mul-T-Lock® ArmaDLock® demonstrates how small measures can make all the difference, as a product specifically for vehicles to offer the ultimate security. It presents a complete all-encompassing solution that is easy to install, maintain and operate. At the same time, we want to continue to educate our audience and work with our locksmith partners across the UK and Ireland to raise awareness of issues around vehicle crime.”

For more information on Mul-T-Lock® ArmaDLock®, please visit www.mul-t-lock.com.

Rhino Doors calls for awareness of fire safety in response to the Building Safety Act 2022

The UK’s leading manufacturer of engineered doors, Rhino Doors, is calling on architects and specifiers to consider the importance of installing higher-performance fire door systems within residential and commercial developments across the country.

In June of this year, the Government brought into force its new Building Safety Act, a piece of ground-breaking legislation which introduces crucial fire safety reforms to provide leaseholders with greater powers and protections.

The new act makes changes to the way residential buildings are constructed following the Grenfell Tower fire of 2017 and holds builders and developers responsible for constructional safety, rather than residents.

This overhauling of legislation will see fire safety take precedence in residential developments, with the introduction of a new Building Safety Regulator to secure the safety of people and increase building standards.

While the new legislation makes specific reference to external cladding, which has dominated political and media discourse in the aftermath of Grenfell, Rhino Doors is urging architects and specifiers to install high-performance fire doors to enhance building safety standards.

Jon Walter, Managing Director of Rhino Doors said:
“It’s clear that changes are needed to ensure public safety in residential dwellings and public areas, particularly in high-rise developments, but greater attention needs to be paid to fire door systems.
“While it’s a legal requirement that fire doors achieve an integrity rating of 30 minutes, many of our high-performance products boast ratings of up to 2 hours, providing enhanced protection against the unforeseen. Of even greater value is the specification of doors with an insulation rating, as well as an integrity rating, providing even greater protection for residents.
“Now, with new regulations in place, as well as a renewed understanding of the importance of fire safety in residential dwellings, architects and specifiers should be seeking out the very best fire door systems to safeguard residents.”

Rhino Doors’ fire doors find applications within a number of commercial settings, including within key transport networks across the UK and around the world.

Earlier this year, the company successfully completed testing on its range of premium-rated latched doors, which achieved impressive 2-hour ratings for integrity, as well as a 90-minute variant offering protection for both integrity and insulation, far exceeding expectations and legal requirements.

Ford Headlight Tech Helps Keep Drivers’ Eyes on the Road

Head-up displays have for some time enabled drivers to stay focussed on the way ahead. But now Ford engineers are trialling new headlight technology that could help ensure those behind the wheel literally keep their eyes on the road. 1

The new technology can project directions, speed limits or weather information onto the road so the driver’s gaze can remain fixed on the way ahead.

Night-time can be riskier for driving. In the UK, 40 per cent of collisions happen in darkness, even though there are far fewer people driving than in the daytime. 2 This risk is increased whenever a driver takes their eyes off the road.

See the new headlight technology in action on YouTube.

A vehicle travelling at 90 km/h covers 25 metres per second, meaning even a short glance at the navigation on the in-car screen can result in “driving blind” for ten metres or more. On an unlit road, this could potentially mean missing an important sign or a bend in the road.

Projecting information onto the road using high-resolution headlights could benefit other road users too. For example, a crosswalk could be projected onto the road, both for the view of the driver and the pedestrian, in situations where the existing road markings are faded or unclear. Other possibilities include showing a path for the driver to follow to ensure cyclists are passed at a safe distance.

The technology could provide the driver with information about changes in weather, such as snow falling, fog, slippery conditions, or an icy road ahead. Connecting the headlight to the navigation system could display upcoming turns, while the width of the vehicle could be projected onto the road, helping the the driver to judge whether the vehicle will fit through a gap or into a parking space.

Endeavouring to make night-driving more comfortable is part of Ford’s commitment to developing technologies that serve and inspire the way people live and work, to make life easier, now and in the future.

Lars Junker, features and software, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Ford of Europe said:
“What started as playing around with a projector light and a blank wall could take lighting technologies to a whole new level. There’s the potential now to do so much more than simply illuminate the road ahead, to help reduce the stress involved in driving at night. The driver could get essential information without ever needing to take their eyes off the road.”
Notes

1 Projecting images onto the road may be subject to different legal regulations in different markets. This vehicle feature is being developed for trial purposes only and is being tested in controlled environments.

DHF continues its ‘Summer of Information’ with Series of Webinars

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is hosting a series of informative webinars that are proving extremely popular with its membership.

The webinars provide clarity and guidance on a wide range of subjects that affect the door and gate industries and have been launched to enable member companies who manufacture or work with industrial doors, garage doors, fire doors, automated gates and traffic barriers to enhance their knowledge of how to put a safe and compliant product on the market.

Three webinars were held on 14th July, 27th July and 4th August, and covered such subjects as CPR Tests and certification, fall-back protection, force limitation, compliance assessments of vertical doors and horizontal doors & gates, UKCA Marking & System 3 type testing.  A further four webinars are scheduled between now and the end of September.

The one-hour-long webinars, which are hosted on Teams and repeated to ensure as many members can attend and benefit from the content, have been presented by DHF’s Senior Training & Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins, and also address some of the frequently asked questions to DHF’s technical department.

So far, the events have drawn a great response with registrations of 80 attendees for the fall-back protection webinar, 55 attendees for the first CPR Test reports webinar and a combined 80 participants registered to attend the Compliance Assessment webinars.

The events are a further benefit for DHF members, as Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens explains:
“We are delighted with the response to our webinars and that we can add value for our members through our ‘summer of information’,” she says.
“Each has been widely accepted and attendee numbers have been unprecedented.  We have repeated the CPR Test reports and certification; indeed, we have already held three webinars on this subject matter, and if members have missed the first two, they can attend the next on the schedule.  In this way, we are able to clarify the misunderstanding on CPR Test reports and certification after the government announced changes in June.”
