Rolls-Royce ‘Makers of The Marque’: Henry Royce - 27th March 1863 - 22nd April 1933

“Henry Royce’s life followed a truly extraordinary arc. From impoverished origins and with minimal formal education, he became a giant of 20th-century engineering and innovation, responsible for designs and technology that helped shape the world we live in now.

But this classic rags-to-riches tale belies the complexity of the man and understates the many challenges he faced during his remarkable life. After 120 years, his influence on the marque he co-founded remains powerful and pervasive; he literally made us who we are today.”- Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Communications and Heritage, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Frederick Henry Royce was born on 27 March 1863 at Alwalton, near Peterborough. He was the youngest of five children in a family with dire financial problems: Henry’s father was finally declared bankrupt and, under the law of the time, imprisoned. This early poverty and hardship would affect Royce’s character, and his health, for the rest of his life.

Aged just 10, Royce started working in London, first as a newspaper seller and later as a telegram delivery boy. Then in 1877, with financial support from his aunt, he secured a coveted apprenticeship at the Great Northern Railway (GNR) workshops in Peterborough. His natural aptitude for design and working with his hands were immediately obvious. A set of three miniature wheelbarrows he made in brass demonstrated the exacting standards he would set for himself and others throughout his career.

But two years later, his aunt’s own money troubles left her unable to pay his annual apprenticeship fee. Undaunted, Royce returned to London and, in 1881, began work at the fledgling Electric Lighting & Power Generating Company (EL&PG). Electricity was then so new it had no professional institutions, and therefore no formal examinations or entry qualifications. For Royce, who had only the most rudimentary schooling, this was a priceless advantage.

His fascination for the subject, formidable work ethic and commitment to improving himself (he attended evening classes in English and Mathematics after work) meant that in 1882, the EL&PG, by now renamed the Maxim-Weston Electric Company, sent him to manage the installation of street and theatre lighting in Liverpool. But when the company abruptly went bust, Royce, still only 19, again found himself unemployed.

But not for long. In late 1884, he founded F H Royce & Co. in Manchester. Initially producing small items such as battery-powered doorbells, the company progressed to making overhead cranes, railway shunting capstans and other heavy industrial equipment.

By 1901, years of overwork and a strained home life were taking a severe toll on his health, which had probably been permanently weakened by the privations of his childhood. Matters worsened the following year when the company found its finances stretched, owing to an influx of cheaper imported electrical machinery that undercut its prices. Ever the perfectionist, Royce was not prepared to compromise the quality of his products, but the resulting strain meant that in 1902, his health collapsed completely.

Royce’s doctors prescribed complete rest and persuaded him to take a 10-week holiday with his wife’s family in South Africa. On the long voyage, he read a newly published book, ‘The Automobile – Its Construction and Management’. What he learned would change his life – and ultimately, the world.

On his return to England, fully revitalised, Royce acquired his first motor car, a French-built 10 H.P. Decauville. The story usually goes that this first car was so poorly made and unreliable that Royce decided he could do better. In fact, his holiday reading had already focused his mind on producing his own car. He chose the Decauville precisely because it was one of the finest cars available to him, in order to dismantle it and then, in his most famous phrase, ‘take the best that exists and make it better’.

He began by building three two-cylinder 10 H.P. cars, based on the Decauville layout. With these foundational machines, he demonstrated the analytical approach, attention to detail and pursuit of excellence in design and manufacture that were the hallmarks of his life.

His friend and business associate, Henry Edmunds, borrowed one of these original Royce 10H.P. cars to complete in the 1,000-mile Slide Slip Trials organised by the Automobile Club of Great Britain & Ireland (later the Royal Automobile Club, or RAC) in April 1904. Edmunds was enormously impressed, and realised this was precisely the high-quality, British-made model that a friend and fellow Club member was looking for to stock in his new London car dealership. That friend was, of course, The Hon Charles Stewart Rolls.

As the technical mastermind behind the new partnership, Royce’s output was astoundingly and relentlessly prolific. From the company’s foundation in 1904 until his death in 1933, he personally created the initial concept for every mechanical item in every Rolls-Royce motor car. An instinctive, intuitive engineer, he had an uncanny ability to assess components purely by eye. He firmly believed that if something looked right, it probably was – and he was almost invariably proved correct.

As demand grew, and the motor cars themselves became increasingly complex, he established a design team, governed by his maxim, ‘Rub out, alter, improve, refine’. Everything the team produced would then either be rejected and sent back for more work or finally signed off, by Royce alone. In contrast to modern motor manufacturing, where models are introduced, updated and replaced at defined intervals, Royce made continuous improvements to his products, without any announcement or notice. Some of these improvements were tiny – a washer here, a hose-clip there – but the net effect was that almost no two Rolls-Royce motor cars were exactly alike in every detail. This system, allied with Royce’s relentless pursuit of excellence in all he did and supervised, made Rolls-Royce motor cars the nearest thing to mechanical perfection possible, given the knowledge and technology of the day.

It is worth restating that Royce never designed a complete car: up to 1949, Rolls-Royce produced only ‘rolling chassis’, equipped with an engine and drivetrain, upon which a specialist coachbuilder then built bodywork to the customer’s specification. The rolling chassis did, however, include the bulkhead (the panel separating the engine compartment from the passenger cabin) and the radiator, which determined, at least in part, the finished motor car’s overall proportions.

A highly driven – some might say obsessive – man, Royce brought his meticulous, enquiring mind and insatiable appetite for hard work to every aspect of his life. Such is the power of his ethos, it still informs and inspires the company that bears his name 120 years later.

120th Anniversary

In 2024, Rolls-Royce marks the 120th anniversary of the first meeting between its founders, Henry (later Sir Henry) Royce and The Hon Charles Stewart Rolls on 4 May 1904. The meeting, at The Midland Hotel in Manchester, was arranged by a mutual friend, Henry Edmunds.

Rolls agreed to sell all the cars Royce could make and the rest is, literally, history. Together, Royce and Rolls created what was soon dubbed ‘the best car in the world’ and gave their names to a dynasty of motor cars that continues to define superluxury motoring across the world.

The shortlist for the Product Design and Innovation Electronic Award (Electronic), sponsored by the Automatic Door Suppliers Association, as part of the AI Specification Awards 2024 has been announced.

Four companies will go head-to-head for the coveted prize which will be revealed at a gala lunch, in Southwark Cathedral, next month (April).

It is only the second time that electronic solutions have had their own category in the biennial awards – reflecting levels of innovation within the industry and the demand for blended solutions. It attracted significant entries, showcasing solutions which combine traditional architectural ironmongery with electronic/technological components and interfaces.

Finalists include:
  • Access2: TeDee

Organised by The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), they are staged to identify and reward excellence in the specification of architectural ironmongery in the construction industry.

Said ADSA Managing Director Ken Price:
“It’s a real honour to sponsor this award for the second time. Innovation is often sparked by a need to address a specific issue or improve effectiveness or efficiency. Use of new technologies within product development can enhance safety, security, accessibility, result in energy savings and support sustainability.  This award is a celebration of those efforts which lead to a significant step change.”
The first recipient of the award was Strand Technologies which won in 2022 with Virtual Engineer, a technology solution for the control and diagnostics of automatic doors, gates and barriers.

Historic Formula 1 Building to Open its Doors at 81st Members’ Meeting

Goodwood is delighted to announce that an important part of motor racing history, which has been saved from demolition and relocated to the Goodwood Motor Circuit, will be open for an exclusive preview at the 81st Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport.

The ‘Tyrrell Shed’ is a 6m x 21m wooden building, whose humble exterior hides a remarkable history. Until 1976 it was home to Tyrrell Racing - one of the most groundbreaking Formula 1 teams of all time. Even after the team moved assembly of its cars into a purpose-built factory next door, the shed continued to serve a function, as a fabrication shop and then for storage. We are thrilled that the building has found a new, permanent home at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit.

When Ken Tyrrell first established his team in 1958, he set up in an ex-military issue shed in the yard of his family’s timber business. Having competed in lower formulae from 1958-67, with an impressive roll-call of drivers including such future stars as John Surtees and Jacky Ickx, Tyrrell entered Formula 1 in 1968, with an up-and-coming Scottish driver by the name of Jackie Stewart. The rest, as they say, is history. Narrowly missing out on the championship in 1968, Stewart and Tyrrell dominated the 1969 season using Matra chassis. They would go on to win again in 1971 and 1973, by now using Tyrrell chassis, all of which were built in the shed.

And it wasn’t all about Sir Jackie. Francois Cevert, Jody Scheckter, Patrick Depailler and Michele Alboreto all won grands prix for the team, which also launched the careers of the likes of Didier Pironi, Martin Brundle, Stefan Bellof and Jean Alesi.

On two separate occasions, the Tyrrell Shed helped conceal the best-kept secret in Formula 1. First, in 1970, Ken, chief designer Derek Gardner and a small team of mechanics and engineers created Tyrrell 001 - the team’s first chassis of their own manufacture. Then, in 1976, they unveiled P34 - the legendary six-wheeled car. On both occasions, nobody outside the close-knit team had any idea of the cars’ existence.

Having stood in rural Surrey for more than 70 years, the shed (which had originally been intended as a temporary structure!) faced an uncertain future, before Goodwood was approached to save it from demolition. After a careful period of sensitive restoration, it was dismantled and transported from its original location in Ockham Village to the Hurricane Lawn at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, where it is set to open to Members and Fellows of the Goodwood Road Racing Club at the 81st Members’ Meeting in April.

Great care has been taken to retain as much originality as possible, right down to stickers on the walls, creating a tangible sense of ‘the ghosts of the past’. When Ken Tyrrell eventually sold his team in 1998, it became BAR, then Honda, Brawn and finally Mercedes-AMG. Stepping into the building now, it is impossible to imagine that the roots of the all-conquering Mercedes F1 team can be traced to this 126 sq/m wooden shed!

After this sneak peak at the 81st Members’ Meeting, the Tyrrell Shed will be officially opened to the general public at the Goodwood Revival on Sunday 8 September.

Tickets for the 81st Members’ Meeting are exclusively available to Goodwood Road Racing Club Members and Fellows here. Further information about joining the Fellowship, including the host of benefits on offer, is available here.

Charity fun at Garador in Support of Red Nose Day

It was fun and laughter at leading garage door manufacturer Garador last week when employees joined in to raise money for Comic Relief’s 2024 Red Nose Day charity appeal.

The appeal was based around doing something funny for money, and Garador staff certainly raised a lot of laughter when they arrived at work in an astonishing variety of brightly coloured clothes. From crazily striped blazers and dresses to iridescent leggings and of course false red noses, everyone had a lot of fun as they collected donations for the charity.
“Red Nose Day raises money to help end child poverty and it was wonderful to see our employees come together so strongly to give their support,” said Garador’s Managing Director Jon Watson. “We have a number of charity events planned for this year, but this without doubt is the most fun and brought in lots of laughs as well as money!”

ZEROplus Announce New Addition to Finger Protection Range

Leading door hardware supplier, ZEROplus has recently added a new finger protection product to their finger protection range.

Along with the popular Finprotect Plus, which fits to the hinge side of doors, ZEROplus now supplies a patented anti-slam device that prevents fingers from being crushed on the closing side of a door.

The Salvadita anti-slam safety system stops a door from slamming shut when force is used. Ideal for use in nurseries, schools, supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and any public building, it protects against potential painful crushing when hands and fingers are placed between the door and frame.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), a staggering 30,000 people trap and seriously crush their fingers in doors every year. And many of these people, particularly children, will require surgery.

Mark Lockley, Managing Director of ZEROplus, explains:
‘Painful finger-trapping accidents are far more common than you might think, and serious finger-crushing accidents can happen to anyone. To eliminate potential risk, a finger protection guard should be fitted to the hanging side of a door, along with an anti-slam device to prevent the door from slamming shut. Particularly in public buildings such as residential homes, schools, nurseries, leisure centres and libraries, finger guards and anti-slam devices are essential to prevent painful finger injuries.’

The Salvadita anti-slam safety device is used on internal doors and is quick and easy to install, protecting hands and fingers year after year. The device fits to the top of the door frame and only activates when a door is closed with extreme force. The Salvadita safety system won’t engage on normal closing, allowing the door to close normally and without interruption. The durable anti-slam device is suitable for use on aluminium, metal, PVC and wooden door sets, preventing painful crushing accidents when hands or fingers are placed between the door and frame.

Mark continues:
‘The patented finger protection safety system has passed numerous durability and admissibility tests, and we’re proud to be the sole UK distributor of this excellent safety product. Of course, unsuitable for doors fitted with a door closer and fire or emergency exit doors, as the device could stop the door from closing, the Salvadita is an ideal safety device for internal doors in any public building, especially those that cater to vulnerable people, children or buildings that are particularly busy.’

To learn more about the Salvadita anti-slam device and other finger protection products from ZEROplus, please visit zeroplus.co.uk or call 01785 282 910.

GfA showcases four new products at R+T 2024

There was one clear winner at R+T Stuttgart this year, taking almost all of the limelight - the GfA TS 971+ IoT-enabled control panel.

The TS 971+, with its Evodo gateway to the Internet, returns incredible levels of time-stamped data; including usage, fault finding, event logs, safety reports, parameter changes, and energy and heat loss reporting.

GfA showcased its latest products on a 350sqm stand, with the show welcoming more than 61,000 visitors through its doors.

ELEKTROMATEN® FX with separate Frequency Inverter
Frequency Inverter door drives have been a part of the GfA product offering for many years.

Enabling adjustable and fast opening/closing speeds with soft start and soft stop, this offers efficiency and is a great energy-saving solution.

Until now, the Frequency Inverter was mounted directly on the electric motor.

The FX, with a separate Frequency Inverter module, offers the flexibility to wall mount the inverter when space around the drive unit may be limited.

The FX will be offered in a wide selection of torques and speeds as per our current line of FI drives.

Control Panel & Wall-Mounted Charger for Electric Vehicles
This innovative solution significantly reduces the high installation costs often associated with vehicle chargers.

How? By supplying power to the wall-mounted charger via the TS 971 Control Panel without requiring a dedicated power supply for both the door and vehicle charger.

The integrated charging management ensures that the 11kW max. charging power is not exceeded – the customised Plug-and-Play wiring harness is provided and allows for simple installation without needing a qualified electrician.

This product is a winner of an R+T 2024 Innovation Award.

IoT Enabled TS 971+ Control Panel with Evodo Gateway
GfA’s tried and tested TS 971 Control Panel will soon be available with internet capabilities!

The TS 971+ with Gateway enables convenient and automatic transmission of the door data directly to the cloud – negating the need for your engineer to visit the site.

This opens up the possibility for remote diagnostics with warning notifications, service planning, assisted repairs and remote viewing of your door data.

External Control Devices with two LED 7-Segment Display
When the TS Control Panel is mounted at a high level and the door is to be operated remotely by either a 3 Push Button Station or Keyswitch, the LED display is not accessible when operating the door.

Our solution is to add an integrated two-LED 7-Segment Display to the Push Button Station or Keyswitch, which allows messages showing the door status and fault codes to be clearly visible.

GfA continues to be the UK’s leading specialist in industrial door drives and associated control panels and has a proven track record of more than 70 years in manufacturing and product innovation in the door industry.
