JD (UK)’s Digitally Printed Natural Woods prove a Big Hit

The Trend series of sectional garage door from Alutech has been without a doubt JD (UK) LTD’s best-seller. But when the sole UK distributor of Alutech products launched a digital print option for the Trend in June 2021, previously only available on the Prestige door, it gave this old favourite a new lease of life and boosted sales in the process, on track to double the initial sales forecast!

The specialised industrial digital printing technology allows the application of complex images onto the door leaf, making it possible to bring the homeowner’s most imaginative and personalised design ideas to life, as well as offering a wide selection of natural wood and stone effects.

As anticipated, of the four digital print options available, the natural wood prints have proven a sure-fire hit, offering a unique finish for those who appreciate the beauty and authenticity of nature.

Similarly, the natural stone prints that mimic the patterns found in real stone and marble have also been popular. JD (UK) LTD has also seen an increase in the popularity of the Panoramic series of sectional garage door, with its modern design of fully acrylic glazed panels.

Homeowners can also opt for an image of their choice printed on the door panel set or choose from the many themed prints Alutech offers, from categories such as nature, landscapes and vehicle themes.

Jason Wade, JD UK National Sales Manager, commented:
“We were excited to be finally able to offer the innovative digital print option on what is our most popular door, the Trend. We’re increasingly seeing that homeowners no longer want to imitate the style of their neighbours, but rather differentiate their property with something that is truly unique to them.

The digital printing technology allows them to achieve exactly that and we knew it would be a big hit.”

What Fabricators need to know about Anodised Aluminium

Aluminium is known for being a versatile metal. Flexible, strong and corrosion resistant; it’s the ideal building material.

It is also significantly more environmentally friendly than other metals as it is 100% recyclable. This means that carbon savings increase each time it is recycled and making it an increasingly popular choice for doors and windows.

Although aluminium can withstand weathering better than other metals, it can still tarnish and oxidise over time if it does not receive additional treatment. One of the best ways to protect and enhance the appearance is by giving it an anodised finish.

HOPPE has been using anodised finishes for its aluminium door and window hardware for over 35 years. This finish is created by using an electrolytic process which enhances its natural qualities making it even more durable.

No additional covering is applied, it simply creates a layer that is built up from the existing aluminium that is fully integrated with the metal substrate.

This increases its abrasion resistance and helps the product to retain its appearance which is particularly useful in high traffic areas.

Corrosion resistance

Anodising hardware also increases corrosion resistance. Ironmongery affected by corrosion will become tarnished or discoloured.

Anodised finishes are suitable for external applications even in coastal locations. HOPPE’s popular external door handles, the Atlanta and Tokyo, are available with anodised finishes as a profile or security set.

HOPPE brand name products are tested to ensure flawless operation. These tests closely reflect the everyday knocks hardware has to take and extend beyond the requirements of technical standards such as DIN EN 1906.

As part of HOPPE’s commitment to high quality products, all HOPPE handles have a 10-year mechanical operation guarantee, as long as assembly and maintenance guidelines are followed.

Design choice
When the anodising process takes place, there is also the opportunity to alter the final finish. Popular finishes include silver and gold colours to complement traditional hardware finishes not only for entrance doors, but also around the home.

As part of HOPPE’s duranorm® range there are internal door handles that also offer an anodised finish. The Dubayy, Seattle and Ibiza series all have a contemporary handle design to match a range of interiors. All three of these handle series are available in silver colour and polished chrome.

Finding hardware for aluminium window and door systems
HOPPE (UK) has launched a leaflet that will help aluminium window and door manufacturers looking to specify compatible hardware for their products.

Andy Matthews, head of sales at HOPPE (UK), said:
“We have collated a selection of high-quality products that are compatible with aluminium window and doors systems both in terms of design and aesthetics.
The leaflet does not just cover handles, we’ve also included panic hardware and door closers to offer suitable solutions for all applications.”
To get a free copy of the leaflet, contact Andy on andy.matthews@hoppe.com or 01902 484 400.

Improving Building Hygiene – Where Does Door Hardware Fit In?

Daniel May, Director at Consort Architectural Hardware, discusses the role door hardware plays in improving hygiene within public building environments.

Health and hygiene are delicate themes, particularly in today’s settings. Both our homes and public building environments can have a huge impact on our wellbeing, and over the past few years, this fact has only been exemplified.

Eighty percent of common infections are spread by touch and every 30 minutes, the average person is said to touch surfaces that expose them to 840,000 germs. These germs are prevalent in buildings too, where touchpoints are areas or items that are used by several individuals. Within workplace environments for example, door handles are the most touched surface and can be associated with cross-contamination and health risks.

At present, the need to improve hygiene within our building environments, understandably, carries a greater significance than it maybe once did. But in truth, when it comes to building design, the process of protecting occupants and visitors against infection - especially those most vulnerable - should never be overlooked.

Design for Bacteria Control

Over the past two years, we’ve seen building environments closed, reopened and the process repeated. The idea of reducing footfall in facilities was key in fighting the rising infection rates associated with the coronavirus. But now, that footfall has returned.

Once again, those critical touchpoints such as door handles are harbouring germs. In fact, research has shown that the coronavirus can survive on surfaces for hours, and even days on metal door handles - and the same can be said for the common flu.

In response, we’ve seen government campaigns promoting hand washing, sanitising and distance-making in the wake of a return to public facilities. Undoubtedly, infection control methods such as hand washing and systematic cleaning are the most guaranteed way of controlling cross-contamination - yet, still these methods can become redundant when faced with human error or relaxed conventions within public buildings.

Building design can play an important role here. Daniel May, Director at Consort explains:
“We’re at a point where decision makers are under pressure to keep building hygiene standards as high as ever before. And outside of the clear-cut hygiene measures, it’s understood that more can be done throughout the building design process, with architectural hardware selection at the core of decisions.
“Door hardware is the first touchpoint when entering, exiting or navigating a building, and can be one of the most bacteria-ridden. Yet, the latest in hardware advancements could give facility managers an edge in the fight against infection, especially in healthcare facilities, such as hospitals for example, where footfall is high and the need to maintain strict sterile environments already exists.
“For added protection against bacteria, facilities can implement tailored anti-microbial hardware and finishes. Anti-microbial coatings applied to door handles are precisely formulated to prevent bacteria build-up upon the surface by interrupting cell multiplication. Some door seal solutions also make use of modern anti-bacterial technology, embedding it within the aluminium and silicone of the door seal during production, further reducing the spread of bacteria in high traffic areas.”

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) sets a regulation that cleanliness and effective infection control is a necessity for care and hospital locations. As well as best practice methods, healthcare environments are encouraged to introduce innovative infection control methods where possible.

Similarly, under The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, decision makers have an active duty to keep inhabitants safe and their environments clean. And aside from the use of antimicrobial solutions, many are challenged to provide hygienically maintained environments without sacrificing fire or safety standards.

Daniel adds:
“Facilities with high footfall must also consider ventilation and ease of movement. Whether in healthcare, commercial or public environments, both are key elements of efficient building management and when done effectively, can further help inhibit the spread of infection by ensuring fresh air is consistently making its way through halls and rooms.
“The most effective way to improve ventilation throughout a building is by opening its windows and doors. This creates an inlet for fresh air and an outlet for the old air, and with access points open, minimises the need to touch door handles. Yet, when focusing on airflow, it’s inopportune to disregard fire safety. Too many times, we’ve seen facilities fall foul of leaving fire doors propped open in favour of improving ventilation and ease of access - but simply put, it’s illegal to do so and leaves fire doors wholly ineffective in a fire situation.
“Modern exit systems are purpose built to ensure fire doors can be left open safely and securely. Automatic door controls make use of sensors which activate the operator devices connected to the main access doors. In turn, this aids access and egress when required and closes the doors shut when necessary. In the event of a fire, the alarm is sounded, and the doors close automatically - ensuring safety is never compromised. What’s more, these systems can be integrated with the external building security, reducing risk on all fronts.
“Ultimately, when paired with regular cleaning practices, these modern solutions can play an assist role in the fight against infection, helping to maintain building hygiene as well as the obligatory standards associated with building and fire safety.”

Spooky track day circuits to check out this Halloween

TrackDays.co.uk uncovers the best haunts for thrillseekers to drive on this fright night, race circuits such as Castle Combe and Goodwood are both rumoured to have phantom guests. meanwhile, Snettertons' resident ghoul, 'Scary Tree' reveals its disguise.

It's track or treat this Halloween, as leading driving experience provider TrackDays.co.uk is offering daredevils the chance to screech around the UK's spellbinding race circuits, many of which hold their own spooky secrets.

The Cotswold village, Castle Combe, namesake of its racetrack is a site with numerous paranormal sightings. These include a ghostly miller seen hurrying home to a village cottage and reports of Viking battle cries which locals insist echo from the nearby Parsonage Wood.

Dan Jones, operation manager at TrackDays.co.uk, commented:

"With Castle Combe racetrack neighbouring these eerie yet enchanting locations, daring drivers should keep their eyes peeled and ears open if they wish to leave with their own ghost story to tell."

Meanwhile, Goodwood, home of the famous festival of speed and another beloved racetrack, also has a chilling tale to tell. According to Georgian legend, a beautiful widow, known as Mrs-M, died in a tragic accident involving an uncontrollable horse-drawn carriage, and later appeared to her brother-in-law in the local area.

Dan added: "This story might give a spine-tingling chill, but drivers can be assured that they will not be required to control runaway horses as they take supercars such as a Lamborghini or Ferrari for a spin around the iconic Goodwood racetrack with TrackDays.co.uk!".

On a lighter note, when Snetterton racetrack regulars realised that the dark, mysterious figure causing a fright was in fact a large tree in the shape of a human, they were reminded that not all ghost stories require a ghastly and ghoulish ending.

Indeed, last year Snetterton's iconic 'Scary Tree' was sadly damaged by Storm Ciara, but despite this, lives on to remind passing drivers that things aren't always what they seem.

Keen customers can have a go themselves at spotting the now disfigured infamous 'Scary Tree' at their next visit to Snetterton Race Circuit as they drive one of TrackDays.co.uk's many supercars, including McLarens and Bentleys.

Dan concluded: "Whilst many will celebrate October 31st by carving pumpkins, trick or treating or eating toffee apples, this Halloween, TrackDays.co.uk hopes to offer something a little spookier not for the faint of heart."

Since 2004, TrackDays.co.uk has been thrilling thousands of customers with driving experiences, bike and car track days and experience gifts.

TrackDays.co.uk prides itself in offering a huge range of experiences at tracks and venues across the UK and Europe. This is possible as TrackDays.co.uk is independent and not tied to any one track, provider, hotel or events team.

Truly memorable experiences include supercar driving, rallying, drifting, off-roading and much, much more, to suit all ages and tastes.

ADSA Sponsors Industry Award

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is sponsoring a prestigious award highlighting the best in electronic product design and innovation at the AI Specification Awards 2022.

Next year’s biennial event, which is organised by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), will mark its 40th anniversary.

ADSA is sponsoring the award to support member organisations that offer products and services that straddle traditional architectural ironmongery and electronic/technological solutions. It is part of a wider move to work with other professional and trade organisations for greater resilience and integration.

Last year, ADSA joined forces with the Door Hardware Federation (DHF) to launch the Entrance Systems Alliance – an assessment centre for technical qualifications. It also supported the GAI members day this summer.

The Product Design and Innovation – Electronic Award, will be judged on effective specification and demonstrate security, accessibility and safety enhancements that also add to aesthetics, functionality and longevity.

To enter, projects or products must have been completed or released on the market between 1 October 2018 and 30 September 2021.

Entries are now open and must be submitted by 19 November 2021. Each category will have a first, second and third placing. The judges will also decide on an overall ‘Winner of Winners’.

Entries should be submitted online at www.aispecificationawards.co.uk

Said Ken Price, Managing Director of ADSA:
“We are delighted to sponsor the Product Design and Innovation – Electronic Award. As an association representing the powered pedestrian door industry, we are conscious that entrance solutions frequently consist of manual, electronic and technological products combined. We would actively encourage our members to enter and demonstrate the fantastic design and innovation which is regularly produced by our industry.”

Douglas Masterson, Technical Manager for GAI, added:
“We are overjoyed to have ADSA sponsor this award and join our judging panel. Following the postponement of last year’s awards, we will be assessing projects completed and products launched over the last three years! The 40th anniversary of the award promises to be bigger and better than ever.”

The Automatic Door Association (ADSA) was formed in 1985 to establish quality and safety standards for the automatic door industry. It developed the first industry code of practice which covered safety aspects of automatic doors for pedestrian use.

This subsequently formed the basis of BS 7036: 1988, a code of practice for provision and installation of safety devices for automatic, power operated pedestrian door systems.

Its membership includes manufacturers, suppliers, installers and service providers of automatic doors – from global companies to sole traders. ADSA member organisations supply more than 75% of the UK market.

For further information on ADSA membership, email: rachel@adsa.org.uk or telephone: 01827 216136.

XL Joinery Launches first Fully Integrated Fire Doors with the help of ASSA ABLOY

Working collaboratively across several business units, the ASSA ABLOY Group has enabled valued customer XL Joinery to launch its first ever range of fully integrated fire doors for residential apartments.

The Simpli Advanced® range from XL Joinery required a high-quality range of door hardware to achieve fire integrity.

Through close collaboration with the XL Joinery team, ASSA ABLOY was able to offer the perfect solution, supplying components from UNION, Yale Door and Window Solutions and Lorient – all of which work hand-in-hand to maintain integrity during a fire.

XL Joinery – an established door distributor for more than 25 years – had previously sold its doors and ironmongery separately, and was seeking to launch its first range of fire doors with the components pre-fitted as standard.

To achieve this, the company turned to ASSA ABLOY for not only the hardware, but the support behind this to ensure a compliant solution and support around testing and accreditation.

Key to the success of the project was the way in which ASSA ABLOY established and understood the customer solution, before project managing this process, pooling the resources of its UK group business units to make it a reality.

This allowed the company to provide XL Joinery with a combined offering of UNION hinges and door closers; Yale Door and Window Solutions’ multipoint lock range, suitable for PAS24 doorsets and assessed at ASSA ABLOY’s UKAS testing laboratory; and Lorient’s intumescent and acoustic components, as well as acoustic testing and indicative fire tests.

Thanks to this cooperation between ASSA ABLOY’s different brands, XL Joinery was able to bring to market a range of residential apartment fire doors that offers its customers the highest standards of quality, protection and functionality.

Sean Williams, OEM Regional Sales Manager for the North & Ireland at UNION, who led the project, comments:
“XL Joinery had the doors, but what they needed was the door sets, with everything that entails in terms of the different components and the testing required.

As a Group, we had everything they required, including the knowledge and experience to guide them through the testing process. This meant we were the perfect partner to help them bring the Simpli Advanced range to market.

“This project was a case of teamwork between the different partners, and while Covid-19 restrictions at times made face-to-face meetings impossible, we always managed to adapt and keep the project on track without delays.

“The project has been such a success that we are now moving on to a second phase with XL Joinery, extending the project to encompass the company’s external entrance door range.”
Mark Williams, Director of Technical & Product Development at XL Joinery, adds:
“From the very first consultation, through extensive security and fire testing, and culminating in fully compliant and third-party accredited fire doorsets, ASSA ABLOY has provided a breadth of product, knowledge and support that is unparalleled in our industry.

“Considering the challenges that the last year has presented, the achievements made in bringing the Simpli Advanced doorset range to market is phenomenal and ASSA ABLOY and XL Joinery will continue to move forward developing products and solutions that meet the highest regulatory and aesthetic requirements.”

New Door Sizes on Garador Carlton and Horizon Garage Doors

Garador’s recent launch of higher garage doors has proved a big success.

Garador introduced new 6’8’’ and 7’2’’ door heights to the size range for their popular Carlton and Horizon up and over garage doors back in April this year. The sales of these new height doors have increased steadily through the summer months and now winter orders are exceeding expectations.

Garador’s Managing Director Neil Discombe said:
“Our commercial and engineering teams are constantly looking at new ideas and trends to ensure our garage doors remain leaders in the UK market,”

“The idea of taller garage doors was examined to fit in with the increase of larger family vehicles on the road, but it also made sense for many new builds where standard imperial size 6’6” and 7’0” garage door heights don’t always match standard openings.”

Garador’s new 6’8” and 7’2” garage door heights, which include a 6mm fitting tolerance, offer a perfect fit for more common standard brickwork opening sizes. This means there is no need for uPVC cladding, saving both time and materials.”
The new height doors are available for both the Carlton and Horizon door models. These doors are recognised for their exceptional value, durability and design. Constructed from high grade galvanised steel, they are low maintenance and come with a strong box section chassis with superior lifting gear.

The design is rivet free and with their vertical or horizontal lineage and a huge range of colours, these doors are an excellent match for both modern and traditional homes.

Security is important and both door designs come with a secure euro cylinder and solid locking rods as standard. Furthermore, both doors can be upgraded to Secure by Design specification if required.

The new 6’8” door heights in the range can be supplied with either canopy or retractable lifting gear, whilst the 7’2” door heights are available with retractable lifting gear only.

NEC Classic Showcases Electric Classics in Motion

This year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery Channel, is embracing the future with a brand new feature showcasing not only the look of classic electric cars but also how they drive.

Twice-daily, a range of electric classics will be driving around a purpose built oval within Hall 5, next to the Discovery Live Stage, with Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer talking to the various companies and owners.

Show Director Lee Masters said:
“Electric cars may seem like they’re fast becoming part of our future but what most people don’t realise is that they’ve been part of our motoring heritage for over 100 years.”
This includes the 1912 Baker Electric, on loan from Mr Andrew Wood. Manufactured in Ohio from 1899 to 1914, the first Baker vehicle was a two seater with a selling price of $850 and boasted Thomas Edison as one of its first buyers. Edison also designed the nickel-iron batteries used in some Baker Electrics.

Unlike other early cars, the Baker Electric needed no cranking, had no gasoline smell and was essentially maintenance-free. Not surprisingly, it was marketed to women. In late 1910, the Baker Electric was quite luxurious and priced at $2,800. It had a seating capacity of four passengers.

These days, owners include Jay Leno in the USA and there are only three Baker Electrics on the UK’s DVLA database including this example, of the 85 historic vehicles powered by electricity.

Amongst the other electric cars that will be driving will be the Porsche 356 inspired Electric Chesil E, the Westfield Eleven, an electric replica of the iconic Lotus Eleven produced in the 1950’s to race at Le mans, and the Westfield Sports.

The RBW Electric Roadster ‘restomod’ will also feature. The roadster is a brand new electric car with a MGB heritage bodyshell that has been slightly modified. Whilst the car has all the styling of a classic car, it drives like a modern sports car.

These will be joined by converted classic cars from Electric Classic Cars, the subject of Discovery Channel’s Vintage Voltage. Founder Richard Morgan has converted a whole range of cars from a Mini and a Land Rover to a Ferrari and BMW 2002.

Masters added:
“With some classics being converted and other ‘restomods’ coming to market, we wanted to highlight the options available to enthusiasts who are interested in electric motoring but still want that classic styling. It’s a perfect fit for our show theme of The Journey Continues…”
The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, will be held at Birmingham’s NEC from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th November 2021.

Tickets are on sale now, check the website - www.necclassicmotorshow.com or sign up for the newsletter for the latest updates at www.necclassicmotorshow.com/newsletter.

Hörmann UK launch apprenticeship scheme

Matt & Callum Irons

Working together with SMB College Group at their Stephenson Campus in Coalville, Hörmann UK have introduced an apprenticeship scheme to train and educate the next generation of industrial service engineers, whilst providing young people with valuable real-world experience in the workplace.

The first apprentice Callum Irons, who joined Hörmann in early August, is working towards the Level 2 Engineering Operative apprenticeship standard. He will spend two years on the scheme, splitting his time between studying at college for his academic qualification and working on-site with Service Engineer Matt Irons, his mentor and father.

Phil Clark, Industrial Service Manager at Hörmann UK comments:
“Training has always been a priority at Hörmann, and we have always provided comprehensive training for the industry, strengthened by the launch of the Hörmann Academy in 2019.
The introduction of an apprenticeship scheme further enhances this commitment and is a natural extension to our training plans which enables us to offer young people the opportunity to work alongside knowledgeable, experienced staff and acquire job-specific skills.

“It also helps us to expand our team of Service Engineers with operatives who are equipped with an extensive understanding of the market and have been trained by us in the skills necessary to ensure that our service offering is second to none.

“Callum is the first of three apprentices who will be recruited to work in the Service Team, with further schemes being developed and introduced for other departments within the company.”
Paul Dancer, Director of Curriculum for Engineering at SMB College Group, added:
“SMB College Group are delighted to be embarking on this exciting new initiative with Hörmann UK to educate a series of well-trained industrial service engineers. In addition to excellent education in the workplace with Hörmann UK, the apprentices will learn from industry-expert teaching staff in the state-of-the-art facilities at our Stephenson Campus in Coalville.”
The apprenticeship scheme is designed to provide a structured training and work programme which will provide the necessary experience and knowledge required to become a skilled Hörmann Service Engineer.

Callum will have the opportunity to be involved in the service and repair of the most advance doors and loading technology throughout the industrial market.
