A 70 Year Old Minor Miracle

For sale – a mint condition 70-year-old Morris Minor that spent 27 years in Africa.

Looking almost as fresh as the day it was born, ‘YSY 530’ appears to have lived a sheltered life, yet is so well travelled it arguably deserves to star in its own movie!

Fresh adventures now await this venerable classic, as it’s due to go under the hammer at Hampson Auctions’ sale, Thornton Manor, Wirral on April 28.

It was acquired by the vendor, Mr James Davies, from a private owner in Rhodesia in 1954 where, aside from a memorable 2,500 miles trip to and from Umtata, South Africa, it was primarily used for journeys on the local roads around Salisbury, whose primitive strips of tarmac were far better suited to trucks than the relatively narrow track of the Morris.

Come 1960, when James moved to the UK to further his education, the mighty Minor was sold to an elderly lady. Imagine his surprise then, on returning to Rhodesia three years later, to find the car being advertised in a local paper for c.£200. Back in the family fold once again, it then experienced seven years in Zambia.

This was followed by a six-year spell in South Africa, the journey to which via Salisbury is one of many the Davies family are unlikely to forget. Initially, husband and wife convoyed in separate cars, with James in the Minor accompanied by no less than four spaniels. But they became separated and, on nearing the Zambesi, the Morris’s fuel tank sprung a leak.

The 1,820-mile trek by road and rail was ultimately only completed by plugging the hole with soft soap (a proven ‘get you home’ repair) and topping up with fuel at each of the heavily spaced petrol stations.

Mrs Davies recalls her relief at hearing the Minor finally steaming up the Zambesi escarpment to the hotel at the top, where she had waited, desperate for news of her husband, dogs and car.

Following its stint in South Africa, where the Morris had served as a school taxi for the couple’s two boys, it and the rest of the family’s worldly goods were shoe-horned into a 20ft shipping container en route to a fresh start back in the UK.

Despite its international adventures, this stunningly original, rust-free 1951 Morris Minor MM has still only clocked 62,900 miles from new, and is now being sold by Mr Davies for the second and, doubtless emotional, last time in 67 years.

The car carries a pre-sale estimate of £7,000-8,000 – see www.hampsonauctions.com for further details.

U-turn on Pre-Plaster Door Inspections is Good News for Fire Safety

Richard Kowalski

The NHBC has announced a U-turn on its decision to insist all fire frames must be installed and sealed at the pre-plaster inspection stage.

The amended guidance was published in a new technical update and comes after Stairways Midlands highlighted the potential threat to fire safety in new homes as a result of the change, which came into force in January, designed to demonstrate the product has been sealed to the partition correctly.

It caused concern as it made it impossible to supply door sets that offered greater fire resistance, despite fire safety being in the spotlight more than ever and door sets widely being seen as the way forward to ensure compliance and improve safety.

The updated advice now offers three options for installers and contractors, which helps maintain both the high levels of safety offered by door sets and testing for integrity:

Option 1: Fire door frames installed at pre-plaster stage

This was the original requirement from the update in October 2020 and is still a valid option.

Option 2: Fire door linings installed at pre-plaster stage

Fire door linings could be plywood or part of the fire door set provided by the manufacturer or supplier. The lining would be installed at pre-plaster to allow the fitting of the frame at a later stage of the build process. The fire door frame should fit tightly within the plywood lining.*

Option 3: Fire door frames installed after pre-plaster

Fire door frames can be installed post-plaster and architraves not fitted until satisfactory inspection by NHBC has been completed. Once installed, the site manager should notify their Building Inspector that the door set is ready for inspection. The Building Inspector will then inspect the door frame installation on their next visit to site, thus negating the need for a separate inspection.

The NHBC is also conducting a trial to assess the viability of accepting UKAS-accredited installers (third-party certificated) as an additional option.

Richard Kowalski, Technical Manager (Doors Division), at Stairways Midlands, who voiced concerns after the initial change, said:
“This is definitely a win for safety and we are very grateful that NHBC has taken comments on board and looked again at its guidance.
“The three options now give much more flexibility and allow for fire secure door sets to be fitted and inspected at appropriate times, rather than making it all-but impossible to use them.
“It demonstrates that consultation with industry on these types of decisions, intended to further improve quality and safety, is essential.”

Stairways Midlands Ltd will continue to highlight updates and any further inspection changes. For more information, visit, www.stairways.co.uk

*Installers must ensure that the certification for the door/door set allows this type of installation. If unsure please check with the door supplier.

Garage Space or Extra Workspace – Security is Paramount

For many, having a secure space to store their vehicle is an important priority. Whether you use your garage space for storing your vehicle or as an extra workspace like a tool shed, home office or gym, you will want to make sure it's adequately secure in order to protect the valuables inside.

Domestic garage doors can offer users many features that we will mention further down, but one of the most important to be considered is always security.

Vortex Garage Doors provide users with independently tested and approved security certification both to Secured by Design and LPS 1175 issue 8, security rating B3 (SR2).

Secured by Design certification means that the garage door is police and insurance approved and that it has been specially designed to resist forced entry attempts using patented internal systems.

LPS 1175 is a certification used to test the resistance to unauthorised access offered by physical security products.

LPS 1175 considers the resistance of security equipment to forced entry based on the type of tools used and the time that intruders will spend attempting to gain entry.

LPS 1175 is the most widely recognised, trusted, and often preferred marque of third-party approval.

Installing a certified security product not only helps keep intruders out but will also avoid the emotional burden that comes with having a property violated.

Also, the greater the security around your property, the more attractive your insurance premium will be. Therefore, not only do Vortex Garage Doors act as a strong physical barrier and effective deterrent, but they can also potentially reduce the cost of your insurance premiums.

Attention to detail is extremely important when creating a highly secure product, which is why Vortex Garage Doors feature high strength extruded aluminium profiles, the shutter curtain is retained within the side guides and an end retention system on each lath delivers massive resistance to impact or forced entry. The UK manufactured product is certified to resist wind speeds of over 110 mph for widths up to 6 metres wide.

Vortex Garage Doors are unquestionably one of the most secure garage door systems on the market; third party certification provides property owners with confidence that they are receiving a professionally and independently certified product, and peace of mind in assuring their vehicle and other high-value contents are truly safe.

Additional features from the Vortex Garage Door include:
  • A patented lath design to allow 40 – 50% smaller roll zones than any other rolling door system on the market. In fact, the Vortex Garage Door fits a 2600mm high door into an impressive 165mm box.
  • Minimal protrusion into the garage & maximised clear opening dimensions as a result of smaller roll-zones.
  • A wide variety of control options to open and close the Vortex Garage Door at the push of a button - perfect if it’s cold, icy, or rainy outside and you don’t want to leave the comfort of your vehicle to open the door.
  • All doors are fully factory-installed and set up to ensure fault-free installation in reduced time. Vortex Garage Doors are delivered with pre-wired control panels and factory coded fobs and safety.

Vortex Garage Doors are manufactured in the UK under ISO 9001 conditions, ensuring complete control over product quality and lead times.

Vortex Garage Doors are the smallest rolling and strongest in the garage door market, which combined with the speed and ease of installation, are making it the preferred choice of both property owners and garage door installers.

Garador Implements 5S Projects to Improve Production Environment

As part of a drive to improve their production facility, Garador have invested heavily in renewing and replacing the machinery inside the factory and have also looked for ways to improve the production environment for manufacturing garage doors and working processes more generally, with a 5S programme.

Put simply, 5S is a workplace organisation method developed in Japan that helps to reduce manufacturing waste and optimise productivity. There are five phases: Sort, set in order, shine, standardise and sustain.

The overarching theme is to decrease the amount of waste that is produced in the production plant, all the while trying to optimise how things are produced thereby increasing productivity. One of the first steps in Garador’s 5S journey has been to educate the workforce, helping them to understand how 5S works and what it does.

Garador’s Managing Director Neil Discombe comments:
“Firstly we setup an in-house training programme back in 2019 to get everyone up to speed on the 5S & the Lean Manufacturing System. It’s not just about implementing 5S measures in the workplace, but about helping everyone to understand why we are doing it too. We really wanted to get everyone moving in the same direction.”
After a few months the progress from the training programme was visible. The staff were more aware of 5S and how it could be used to improve the way Garador manufactures its garage doors. But this was only the first step and there was much more to do.

Garage doors are systematically manufactured on a large scale at Garador’s production plant in Yeovil, with raw materials entering at one end of the factory and finished products leaving at the other end. The plant is organised into key areas, each of which performs an important part of the production process, from cold-pressing sheets of steel to painting the garage doors. So it has been crucial to get each area organised and optimised. On the framing lines, for example, there are clearly defined positions for every screw, fixing, washer and component so optimal throughput is achieved.

You can often hear Garador’s Lean Leader David Burton using the phrase “A place for everything and everything in its place” in a team briefing or a quick chat with one of the production operatives. It all forms part of the mantra to create and maintain a clean, organised environment for production and David Burton is really enthusiastic about the positives of this approach.

David comments:
“We’ve spent a lot of time optimising different parts of the factory where people are working to make a component for the door. Whether that’s a locking mechanism, a spring assembly or a sheet of steel for the infill, we make sure that an area is well-organised and optimised for the task that is being performed there.”
The practicalities of such an approach might involve marking out the floor, re-organising the workspace or even storing the different parts that are needed in a way that is more conducive to producing something more quickly. One area of improvement has been the section where they produce Canopy Track assembly; all components have been neatly placed into plastic boxes, the walking distance to reach components has been reduced and the floor has been painted to clearly delineate the production area.

With everyone getting up to speed and each production area being optimised, another programme was put into place using the Kanban System. The Kanban system is a method for visualising the workflow of a particular part of a manufacturing process, so you can understand the actual work that passes through that process. This enabled them to only produce what they need, when they need it.

Garador’s Managing Director, Neil Discombe comments:
“We’ve used Kanban systems so we can speed up material flow and the production process.”
The team have invested a lot of time and resources into the Kanban system. Garador’s Lean Leader has worked tirelessly with the production team to try to get things running at full capacity.

Maintaining a clean and tidy factory environment is a never-ending journey. Sometimes things make their way into a production environment whose immediate use or need is unclear. On a larger scale, this can result in lots of unnecessary clutter across the factory. So Garador’s Lean Lead, David Burton, has put in place a red-tagging system where just about anything from pieces of equipment through to pallets of components, are tagged, logged onto the Red tag register and put in a special “red tag” area until a decision is made with what to do with them.

Neil Discombe says:
“We want to make Garador’s factory more organised and less cluttered, and so we use a red-tagging system to eliminate any unwanted items. Thus far it’s been very successful.”
This red tagging system has been further backed up with “Gemba Walks” where Neil and his team regularly inspect the factory and look for ways to improve it.

Neil says:
“We are always looking for a way to continuously improve things on the factory floor and that’s where the Gemba Walks come in. It’s a really simple way to observe the actual working processes, talk with staff about what’s happening, gain knowledge and look for ways to improve things.”

Getting the Garador plant’s production processes organised and optimised so that garage doors are manufactured more efficiently only solves part of the problem. If the changes that are implemented to the production environment aren’t maintained for the long-term, then gradually overtime things fall apart and you end up back where you started.

As a result, the areas that have been improved undergo a weekly audit, which will help sustain the changes that have been introduced. In addition, each project will undergo a review every six months to make sure the improvements are sustained and to look for further ways to continuously improve how they manufacture garage doors at Garador.

Find out more about Garador and the range of garage doors it manufactures by visiting www.garador.co.uk or calling 01935 443701.

Ford ‘Smart Mirror’ Ensures Van Drivers Can Clearly See Cyclists, Pedestrians & Vehicles

Ford is introducing a “Smart Mirror” - a high-definition screen that displays a panoramic rear view for the driver of Transit and Transit Custom vans.

The Full Display Interior Mirror helps drivers to spot cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles that may be behind them, even when windowless rear doors or partitions are in the way.

The display shows a live feed from a camera on the rear of the van and features automatic brightness control for optimum visibility in daylight and at night. The system offers a field of view that is twice the width of a conventional rear-view mirror.

This helps drivers to be more aware of their surroundings, for example, when approaching roundabouts, changing lanes or checking before merging or turning into side streets.

Owen Gregory, director, Commercial Vehicle Aftersales, Ford of Europe said:
“Providing our drivers with maximum visibility – especially in urban areas where there is so much to look out for – increases their confidence and is a key part of making journeys safer for them, and for other road users as well”.

Ford’s new mirror could be particularly beneficial for delivery drivers making frequent drop-offs in cities, where they are more likely to encounter those on bikes, e-scooters or on foot; vulnerable road users accounted for 70 per cent of road accident fatalities in Europe’s urban areas in 2019.1

See how it works in the video below and at this link.

Fitting the system may also improve uptime – the time when commercial vehicles are working on the road – by reducing the need for costly accident damage repairs. Ford last week announced FORDLiive – a new connected uptime system designed to help maximise vehicle uptime.

The mirror, which will cost close to £675, is available for Ford Transit and Transit Custom vans fitted with windowless rear doors. Any Ford dealer can order and fit the system, which is compatible with Transit vans built from 2014 and Transit Custom models built from 2012.

Demonstration video available on:  YouTube

1 European Commission data, June 2020. Vulnerable road users include pedestrians, cyclists and powered two-wheelers.

Steel Steals the Show at Hackney Church Brew Company

A vibrant brewery in London, Hackney Church Brew Co. has been given the steel star treatment by Steel Window Services & Supplies, a member of the Steel Window Association.

The premises which house the brewery, shop and bar formerly housed garages within the Victorian railway arches. Nowadays, locals and tourists alike can enjoy the ambience and experience of a truly authentic brewery.
"We source as many of our ingredients for our drinks and our food as we can from within walking distance of the brewery and we don't do or serve anything unless we can do it as best we can. The result, we think you'll agree, is a space unlike anywhere else in London." - Hackney Church Brew Co.

Steel Window Service & Supplies' project entailed providing W20 arched, headed external screens, along with interior doors and screens. Over 80 man-days, the company supplied and fitted the large entrance screens, two large external screens at the rear of the building, four internal WC doors and one internal double door set.

The W20 suite features an industrial patina finish which offers a stunning urban aesthetic echoing the building's heritage whilst also reflecting the nature of this vibrant, fashionable district of London.

Another innovative touch was the silicone fronted glazing which replicates perfectly the authentic look and feel of traditional steel windows.

Lucas Che Tizard at Red Deer Architects Home - Red Deer adds:
"Set within two large Victorian brick arches near Hackney Central, this project involved the installation of a large brewery in one arch and a dispense bar and kitchen in the other. Set up in affiliation with St John at Hackney Church the design took stimulus from the industrial process of brewing and the physical aspects of the church."
"Large double height metal framed glazing was thus installed to create an etherial yet industrial aesthetic for the façade. Sizable solid timber trusses were then installed to mimic traditional church construction techniques."

Mul-T-Lock Presents New Look for its Patented Platforms

Security specialist Mul-T-Lock has unveiled a new, integrated branding strategy to boost brand recognition and create clear product hierarchies for consumers, with the aim of driving sales for locksmiths.

The new branding strategy includes a united logo, new platform names, an updated colour scheme and premium-designed new packaging to integrate each of Mul-T-Lock’s patented platforms – creating a stronger association between the brand and the hierarchy of its products.

As part of this rebrand, the patented platforms have been renamed structurally to clearly demonstrate the value of each product. Platforms will be represented by the name "MTL™X00", ascending in number according to value, and appearing on both product packaging and on Mul-T-Lock’s legendary key heads.

Currently, the Mul-T-Lock brand is recognised all over the world by its trademark name and logo, blue colour scheme, and unique key shapes, with locksmiths very familiar with the company’s various platforms: MT5®, Interactive®+, ClassicPRO®, etc.

However, research recently found that consumers would benefit from a better understanding of the hierarchy between the various platforms, and that both Mul-T-Lock and its customers could benefit from strengthening the association between the brand’s identity and products.

Sam Shterenshus, CEO of Mul-T-Lock, comments:
“As a company, we pride ourselves on being a locksmith’s preferred partner, but as we continue to strive forward we aim to open up the conversation to consumers also.

“After in-depth research, discussions with valued partners and locksmiths plus focus-group testing, we decided to adopt a new scalable naming system that would immediately click with customers.”

Whilst remaining the trusted and professional brand that locksmiths love, going forward end-users will be able to understand each platform’s position in the range, with this understanding starting a more open dialogue between locksmith and consumer.

The new branding strategy stipulates that the new display boxes will carry only off-the-shelf products, shipped in plastic bags and refreshed blue boxes, where locksmiths can decide which packaging to use according to their go-to market strategy.

To learn more about Mul-T-Lock’s new branding, the MTL range, or to become an approved Mul-T-Lock distributor, please call 01902 364200, email internalsales@mul-t-lock.co.uk or visit www.mul-t-lock.co.uk.

New finishes and colours from Hörmann UK

Adding to an already extensive, marketing leading choice of surface finish and colour options for garage doors, Hörmann UK have introduced a number of new and eye-catching developments for their range of sectional doors.

Two new, modern finishes have been launched.  Slategrain (image below) is a natural finish replicating the curves and structures of slate for M and L-ribbed sectional doors.  Initially available in both white and Anthracite grey, 15 preferred, and a choice of RAL colours will follow.

Whilst a touch of sparkle is added with the creation of Duragrain Diamond, a detailed, natural, and colour-fast smooth finish available exclusively for the RenoMatic sectional door.  Eight modern colours including Diamond Black and Diamond Red are offered to provide a permanently beautiful and scratch-resistant finish.

The launch of Duragrain Individual Print (top image) provides the end customer with the ultimate in creativity and individuality.  Homeowners are offered the ability to print selected individual images and pictures onto the surface of the Hörmann LPU 42 sectional door, providing endless opportunities to create a totally unique garage door.

To help keep doors looking good for longer Hörmann have developed a new, high-strength protective coating.  When applied to the outside of the door the coating provides a high level of scratch and stain resistance and an added barrier against the adverse effects of the weather.

In addition, an ‘anti-graffiti’ coating is also available for application to the outside of the sectional door, as well as any glazing or design elements, which has been designed to allow the easy removal of graffiti with commercially available cleaners.

David O’Mara, Marketing Manager at Hörmann UK comments:
“Here at Hörmann we are always looking for new and creative ideas to ensure we keep up with market trends and consumer fashions.
“We are confident that these new finishes and colour options will prove popular with both dealers and end consumers alike and keep Hörmann at the forefront of innovation and choice in the garage door market.”

Rather than go into details, let’s allow the pictures to do the talking…

At the other end of the spectrum is Woodrite’s quick turnaround solution – the panel-built door. There’s no sacrificing quality – Woodrite uses the same tried and tested joinery skills but has changed its usual description of craftsman-built to fastman-built!

The door is built as a panel and chassis mounted, to give a lead-time of 3-4 weeks, dependent on delivery cycles. The quick delivery is not limited to base-coated doors, but is available across the complete range of fully-finished woodtones from light oak to slate grey.

Contact Sharon Cleaver at Woodrite on 01280 841010 for details of those special doors or for Woodrite’s quick turnaround cedar panel-built ranges!
