Gilgen launch SR5-B security shutter to counter terrorist threat

With unprecedented levels of global security following recent terror attacks, Gilgen Door Systems, manufacturers of the Rolegard™ range of LPS1175 approved security shutters, has launched a unique SR5 rated shutter that combines the highest physical attack standard yet achieved in a security shutter with unrivalled ballistics and blast protection properties.

Rolegard SR5-B is designed to help protect facilities against emerging threats such as hostile incursion and swarm attack.

Complying with insurance and Police Preferred ‘Secured by Design’ standards, Rolegard SR5-B offers first line defence against sustained attempts at forced entry. It is particularly suited as a target hardening measure for high risk applications including government and military buildings, critical national infrastructure, banks, protected spaces, museums and high value commercial premises.

The exceptionally strong design characteristics also make this product a consideration for hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) measures as part of a layered security system and for exposed sites or special building designs that may be subject to severe weather events in terms of wind pressures.

To achieve its very high security rating the SR5-B was tested to LPS1175, issue 7, level 5 using a wide range of professional attack methods including the use of high end power tools.

The shutter features a newly tested Automatic Self Locking (ASL) system to systematically lock down facilities without the need for secondary locks. Designed by Gilgen’s highly experienced product development team in the UK, the ASL system helps to improve protocol and prevents the lifting and jacking of the shutter in the closed position.

Ballistics and Blast Protection

Gilgen has helped mitigate combined attack methods through the introduction of blast protection and two levels of ballistics rating for the SR5-B. Following rigorous ballistics tests this model has achieved FB3 and FB4 ratings to satisfy the requirements of BS EN1522:1999. These properties enable the shutter to be specified for very high risk applications.

Gilgen supplies a range of security shutters tailored to customers’ needs with security ratings between LPS1175 level 2 and 5. The SR5-B model is electrically operated through a direct drive or heavy duty chain geared motor depending on the shutter size and frequency of use.

An extensive range of activation modules including remote control or vehicle activated sensor ensures maximum control and the shutter can be integrated with layered security, such as building management and alarm systems.

Managing Director of Gilgen Door Systems in the UK, David Cerquella comments:
“We are delighted with the launch of our new SR5-B model which offers customers a unique dual security rating. Through continuous product development and testing, we have established Rolegard as the premier solution in the security shutter market. We will continue to develop the range to help customers protect against the challenging security environment and developing threats”.

Securikey On Track In London

Securikey has achieved 'Police Preferred Specification' status for nine models within its convex safety mirror range, demonstrating that the company has met the high standards set by Secured by Design (SBD), a national Police crime prevention initiative.

Securikey are proud to supply Duravision Stainless Steel Wall Dome mirrors to London Underground, the tube train network for London and the South East.

In 2003, TFL (Transport For London) experimented with piping classical music into stations on the London Underground with a view to reducing anti-social behaviour but, with 4 million passengers using London Underground every day - and 89.4 million people per year passing through Waterloo station alone, safety is paramount and a little more than Ravel is required!

Rigorously tested to meet stringent UK, Home Office, London Metropolitan Police and The Prison Service regulations, Securikey's convex, or safety, mirrors provide real-time surveillance for busy platforms and corridors and allow train drivers to view parts of the platform on their approach into a station, forewarning them of any hazards or persons who may be dangerously close to the track.

Drivers say that, in terms of safety, the mirrors are invaluable and provide a clearer view of the platform than the monitors provided in most stations.  In addition, the mirrors help platform staff to see into corners and other blind spots which would normally be hidden from view, increasing passenger safety and reducing vandalism, which is music to the ears of TFL's busy staff and customers.

Manufactured from highly polished mirror grade Stainless Steel, the Wall Dome mirror's curved surface maximises the viewing area for additional safety, making the mirror a virtually maintenance-free, long-lasting, unbreakable surveillance system and helping to keep London Underground a safe and pleasant way to travel.  In fact, Securikey's mirrors have become such an integral part of London Underground that they regularly appear as 'art' on sites such as Flickr and Instagram.

Alan McInnes, General Manager of Secured by Design said:
'Securikey's mirrors are a new category for Secured by Design and we fully support this type of innovative security product and look forward to seeing the expansion into further applications.'

Allegion Strive To Redefine How Door Hardware Is Sold

Specialist security manufacturer, Allegion, is launching a new programme that will hopefully redefine door hardware sales. Allegion’s new first-of-its-kind Try Me Product Programme, gives end users the option to try door closer products on a single door before committing to fitting them throughout their buildings.

The Try Me Product Programme is launching especially for the commercial, healthcare and education sectors, where young people and those needing specialised accommodations are more likely to be negatively affected by doors and door sets that have been incorrectly specified in the past.

Paul Barrows, demand creation leader at Allegion UK, commented:
“We’re always creating and innovating new products, and decided that it’s important to reflect this ethos in the way our products are being sold. We knew that problem doors in commercial buildings can be a burden for facilities managers, so we wanted to give them an easy way to fix it.
“Doors can cause inconvenience through draughts or loss of privacy, but incorrect specification can jeopardise the security and fire safety of the building. We’re encouraging building owners to address the issue of problematic doors and ensure they are putting the best possible solution in place the first time.”
The new programme also allows Allegion to deliver technical advice and consultation to support product selection, alongside demonstrations by trained installers, as well as before and after product comparisons.

For further information or to take advantage of the Try Me Product Programme, contact the Allegion Customer Care Team on 01922 707400 or visit www.allegion.com/uk.

Art, Aircraft or Automobile?

An historic E-Type Jaguar heads H&H Classics offering at the London Classic Car Show. The first batch E-Type competition car with racing history is estimated to sell for £700,000 to £900,000 was shaped by an aircraft designer with aerodynamic experience.

H&H Classics stand, number C170, will feature a special 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Competition Roadster, ‘9 VPD’, which was among the very first E-Types to go racing. Shaped by Malcolm Sayer (1916 –1970), an aircraft and car designer, his most notable work being the C-Type and D-Type Jaguar sports racers that claimed five Le Mans 24-hours victories between them as well of course as the immortal E-Type production car.

He spent the last twenty years of his life working at Jaguar Cars and was one of the first engineers to apply principles of aircraft design to cars. It is thus hardly surprising that this car has something of the aerodynamics of an aircraft, but the fact that is was so beloved by so many has something to do with its sheer artistic beauty.

Finished in Opalescent Dark Blue livery the 1961 Jaguar Roadster is estimated to sell for £700,000 - 900,000 at H&H Classics Duxford sale on April 19-20. This is the venue which saw the company last October join one of only five classic car auction houses to sell a car for over $10m.

The E-Type coming to the London Classic Car Show has an interesting history. After a meticulous restoration the re-born '9VPD' returned to the track for the July 2005 Silverstone Classic Festival. In July 2006 it finished 4th at the Le Mans Classic (behind two Ford GT40s and a Cobra). That same year also saw the E-Type win its class during the Spa 6-hours with Richard Attwood joining Steve Markey and Radical ace Austin Kinsella behind the wheel.

‘9 VPD’ was the first Jaguar home during the Legends race which preceded the 2007 Le Mans 24-hours and paid tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the Coventry marque's famous 1957 D-Type victory and made its Goodwood Revival debut that season too with Rauno Aaltonen co-driving alongside Steve Markey. A regular at the Goodwood Revival, Le Mans Classic and Spa since then, chassis 850007 has also been helmed by the likes of Emanuele Pirro, Marc Gene and Tony Jardine.

Overseen by Jaguar's Engineering Director Bill Heynes and supplied to favoured teams on Lofty England's say so, the seven right-hand drive Roadsters built to Project ZP 537/24 specification were the very first E-Type competition cars.

Upgraded by the Competition Department at Browns Lane, the septet had particular attention paid to their running gear: increased compression ratio, gas flowed cylinder head, lightened flywheel, competition clutch springs and close-ratio gearboxes.

One of two cars earmarked for John Coombs - the other five being distributed among Tommy Sopwith, Peter Berry and Sir Gawaine Baillie - chassis 850007 was completed on 29th March 1961 but not officially road registered as '9 VPD' for another four months (21st July 1961). Typically used as the Coombs team's paddock car whilst its sister machine '4 WPD' (chassis 850006 which became the first 'Lightweight') performed most of the racing duties, '9 VPD' took to the track for the Scott Brown Trophy on 23rd July 1961.

As usual H&H Classics will bring along some motoring magic to the London Classic Car Show which takes place at ExCel London on 18 – 21 February.

Michael Lee – Obituary

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has sadly announced the death of Michael Lee, BWF Membership Director, after a short battle with illness.

In the spirit of the joinery industry, Mike started work as a 17 year old apprentice with the National Federation of Building Trade Employers in August 1967, the organisation from which the BWF evolved.

In a letter to his Headmistress at the time the organisation wrote:
“We are anxious that the young man we appoint shall develop an attractive and diplomatic personality which will in due course fit him for more responsible positions in the organisation”.
Mike did not disappoint and grew with the organisation to become BWF Secretary, a post he held for 20 years, before becoming Membership Director in 2007.

Mike was front and centre throughout the evolution of the BWF and was pivotal in moving the BWF to a Limited Company in 2006, and developing into the independent, self-sustaining and powerful voice for the woodworking sector it is today.

Despite his incredible service period, Mike never lost his enthusiasm for his work and in his final years led the largest membership growth the organisation has ever seen, bringing membership numbers to over 700, a 50% increase on 2010 levels. His efforts helped to secure the Membership Success Award for the BWF at the Trade Association Forum Awards in 2014.

In nearly 50 years in the industry, Mike developed an in-depth knowledge of how the industry works, its culture and personality; he had a knack for being able to spot the needs of members before they knew they needed it themselves.

In 2013 Mike picked up the RoSPA SME Advice Award on behalf of the BWF and spurred on by this, he launched the Health & Safety Hero campaign, focussing on cultural change in the industry. This campaign continues to grow thanks to his determination.

Many BWF members past and present will recall him as their main point of contact with the federation. As well as spending a great deal of his time on the road visiting joinery businesses in their workshops, factories and offices, he was deeply trusted and respected for his advice on anything from health & safety to employment, legal and business support. He was a respected figure outside of the membership too, having built strong relationships with the HSE and other industry bodies including committees and suppliers.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mike was a strong family man. He leaves behind loving wife Irene and their two daughters Naomi and Eleanor . His daughters both followed in Mike’s footsteps into the built environment, studying architecture, and will no doubt fly the flag for timber and joinery as part of their work. Mike loved making things out of wood himself, and had kitted out a new shed in his back garden with woodworking machinery so that he could work on his own woodworking projects. Mike was also an avid collector of vintage Superhero comics.

BWF Chief Executive Iain McIlwee said:
“Mike was an integral member of BWF’s team and one of the nicest and most dedicated people that you could ever wish to meet. It was a pleasure to have worked with him. Mike genuinely cared deeply about the successes, trials and tribulations of each and every member. We all benefitted considerably from his advice, experience and calming presence. His contribution over nearly 50 years working in the industry is huge and we are forever in his debt.”
Mike passed away aged 65. He will be sadly missed by colleagues, friends and members.

Training is the key to driving up industry standards, says DHF

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has accelerated its drive to raise industry standards by announcing a significant expansion to its Safety Assured training programme.

Personnel from all DHF member companies which manufacture, install and maintain industrial doors and garage doors will be attending the DHF safety diploma training scheme courses which are to be held throughout 2016.

The courses will cover all aspects of door safety - from initial risk assessment through to testing and commissioning - so that training candidates can obtain their coveted DHF safety diplomas. Topics covered in the courses will include law and regulations, use of standards, risk assessment, testing and inspection, documentation, repair and maintenance. Managers, engineers, installers and maintainers will be attending the training courses.

This significant expansion to the DHF’s training offering follows the continuing success of the DHF powered gate safety diploma scheme. Over the past two years more than 500 personnel involved in the safety of automatically controlled powered gates, including installers, inspectors and those responsible for gate maintenance, have successfully completed gate safety training courses.

The DHF represents the key players in industrial, commercial and garage doors and automated gates, as well as the leading UK manufacturers and suppliers of building hardware. It says the development of its training programme is the latest stage in an ambitious plan to raise the standards of its members’ products and services to new levels. The plan has seen the introduction of the DHF Quality Assured Standards scheme and Codes of Practice. Also, the DHF has grown its technical and safety advisory team with the addition of audit inspectors and a training officer.

Said DHF CEO Bob Perry:
“Our vision has been to establish DHF member companies as the recognised source of products and services which are legally compliant and are both quality and safety assured. The forthcoming expansion of our training programme is a significant step to us achieving this ambition. ‘Raising standards’ has long been the clarion call underpinning our drive for higher quality and compliance.
“Specifiers, contractors and end users are benefitting from the knowledge that the level of safety, quality and compliance of all our members is reinforced by comprehensive training and is subject to rigorous audit and inspection.
“Our success in achieving this is being increasingly recognised in the marketplace. There must be no place in our industry for untrained personnel who supply and install unsafe and illegal products.”
Membership of the DHF is at its highest level ever. There are now more than 300 members and it is confident its growth will continue throughout 2016.

Hörmann rolls out optimised design for popular garage door

The design of the widely popular RollMatic garage door from Hörmann has recently been optimised following the revision of select key components.

From January 2016, the original design of the RollMatic will be replaced by an updated version in a move that the leading manufacturer hopes will make the installation and maintenance processes easier. The revised components will also reduce the potential for error.

The width of the guide rails has been extended from 100mm to 110mm, covering the screws of the wind locks adjacent to the rails, thereby improving the overall appearance. The separate fitting compensation set and brush have now been integrated into the updated guide rail, but remain available as an optional extra. This component makes the door particularly suited to renovations or fittings on timber structures.

In addition to the previously used brush and weather strip, the guide rails now benefit from two further brush seals per rail, resulting in a class two driving rain tightness status.

The sealing has also been improved after a design change to the barrel casing, which will now be connected by a hinge. This is especially beneficial for externally fitted roller doors and will allow for easier access to the curtain during maintenance. The suspension has also been adjusted in such a way that the suspension points are no longer visible on the exterior of the cladding.

The guide channels have also been revised and will now serve as the fixing point for the barrel casing in the new design, thus removing the necessity for a separate sheet plate on internal roller doors.

David O’Mara, from Hörmann commented:
“After taking on feedback from our dealers and maintenance team we felt that some changes could be made that would benefit the door’s design and durability. The new RollMatic design still benefits from precision engineering and the latest technology, as well as its original intelligent design features, ensuring that it remains a safe, reliable and space-saving option for homeowners.”
A wide selection of finishes and colours, along with matching frames and fascia are still available for the RollMatic. The updated brochure, fitting data and instructions, order forms and spare parts list are now available from Hörmann’s website.

Hörmann has also made improvements to its packaging and will now wrap its curtains with cardboard on the outside and foam on the inside for better protection during transition and installation. The change will also make it easier and more convenient for installers to load the packaged doors into smaller vans.

Assa Abloy Security Doors’ Deliveries Arrive in Prime Condition

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors go the extra mile to ensure that their deliveries arrive in prime condition, just as they left the factory.

Pallet caps are included on the top of all ASSA ABLOY Security Doors’ deliveries to safeguard the steel doors, so that they do not become damaged during transportation.

The pallet cap is a yellow cardboard cone, which is attached firmly to all ASSA ABLOY Security Doors’ deliveries. When a delivery arrives, if the cardboard cone is crushed, or not attached to the pallet, this is an indication that steel doors may have become damaged during haulage and the quality of steel doors could be compromised.

The whole pallets are also shrink-wrapped to help protect the doors against wet weather conditions during loading and unloading and a steel strap secures the doors in place for transportation. In addition, polystyrene is included around the doors’ corners to safeguard against damage.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, said:
“We offer the UK’s leading ranges of proven security doors – Powershield steel doors and Safeguard timber doors.
“We take great pride in providing high quality products, so want to ensure that the doorsets arrive to projects in pristine condition. The attention to detail that we give to ensure our deliveries arrive safely is unique to ASSA ABLOY Security Doors.”
ASSA ABLOY Security Doors also ensures that its doorsets are not damaged as they are put onto and taken off delivery vehicles; a timber framework surrounds the doors in order to prevent forklifts from making direct contact with the products.

For any queies on deliveries, please contact AASDsales@assabloy.com or call customer service on 028 9262 5775.

Hörmann to launch new products at National Homebuilding and Renovating Show

Garage and entrance door manufacturer Hörmann will be unveiling new and updated products at this year’s National Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC in Birmingham.

The exhibition, which takes place from 14 - 17 April 2016, is the UK’s biggest self-build and renovating event, with over 500 exhibitors. Hörmann’s stand will cover more than 100m², with a host of garage doors, entrance doors and surface finishes on display.

Visitors to the stand will have the chance to see two new variants of one of Hörmann’s most popular styles of garage doors. Displayed for the first time, the new products have been built to the latest technical specifications, using the precision German engineering that the manufacturer is renowned for.

Also on display will be the PortaMatic, an internal door operator specifically designed for use in mobility-adapted homes. Launched earlier this year, the PortaMatic has never before been exhibited at a UK show.

Hörmann will also be showing the new T-ribbed version of its sectional garage door. This contemporary style comes in a triple-ribbed design with optional wooden or steel infills.

The 2016 Homebuilding and Renovating Show will be the 9th time Hörmann has exhibited at the event.

David O’Mara, marketing manager at Hörmann (UK) Ltd., commented:
“We meet thousands of homeowners over the four days of the show and offer them information and advice on the types of doors available for their homes. Many people have a self-build or renovation project planned but some simply come along for inspiration. Whatever your plans, our experts will be on hand to answer any questions and demonstrate the products on offer.”
Hörmann is planning an exciting stand for this year’s show, with other items likely to include its highly insulated steel and aluminium entrance doors, the impressive HST side-sliding sectional garage door and other product surprises.

For more information on the show or to book tickets, visit www.homebuildingshow.co.uk. Details on Hörmann’s full product range can be found at www.hormann.co.uk.

Special Tribute To Rallying’s Greatest Generation

Thirty years since the fearsome Group B era was outlawed, the London Classic Car Show marks that milestone with a stunning display of epic cars presented by rally legend Ari Vatanen.

Supercars between the trees. That’s what Group B was to rallying. Formula 1 in the forests.

In four years between 1983 and 1986 rallying developed further and faster than it had done in four decades before that. Group B took the sport to the absolute edge of performance, but put it beyond common sense. When FISA culled the category following a series of scary accidents, Group B was immortalised.

Though ultimately short-lived, since then the epic Group B era has acquired legendary status and will be evoked with a special display at next month’s London Classic Car Show (18-21 February).

The decision to axe the formula came almost exactly 30 years ago in May 1986. And yet the iconic collection of extreme Group B machines gathered at ExCeL still look current, futuristic even.

The cars include Lancia’s rear-drive 037 and the subsequent Delta S4, the Ford RS200 with its supercar styling, the Williams F1 engineered Metro 6R4, the punchy Peugeot 205 T16 and, of course, the trail-blazing Audi quattro that really set the ball rolling back in 1981.

Indeed one number, one word changed everything. Quattro. Four.

There were still those who refused to believe in the revolution, the combination of four-wheel drive and turbocharging would never work: too complicated and too heavy.

Six stages into the quattro’s World Rally Championship debut in Monte Carlo, though, Hannu Mikkola was almost six minutes ahead. The revolution had arrived. Rallying would never be the same again.

If Audi changed the game, it was Peugeot that defined the era. The quattro was good, but the 205 utilised the full freedom of Group B regulations. Beyond its 205 GTI silhouette, the rally car bore no resemblance to the road car. The turbocharged engine was mid-mounted and, of course, coupled to four-wheel drive transmission.

This was Ari Vatanen’s car and Ari will be one of the famous faces attending the London Classic Car Show. The Finn was one of the few men in the world who could contain the fearsome power of a Group B car and muster the controlled aggression required to get the best out of it.

For five rallies spanning the 1984 and 1985 seasons, Vatanen and the Peugeot 205 were unbeaten and utterly unbeatable.

“I was intrigued by this new car they were making,” he recalls. “And I was not disappointed. It was incredible. Remember, at the time, Peugeot was not really so well known in world of rallying. They had success in the long-distance African events, but nothing like a 205. When I sat at the start of the stage in a T16, I could always feel the side of my mouth making a smile.”

Group B was getting out of hand, however. Speeds were getting higher and higher and the death toll among fans and crews was rising. Vatanen himself almost lost his life in a terrifying crash in Argentina, 1985 – but that was more to do with the seat breaking mid-accident rather than the car around him.

By the end of 1986, Group B was gone. The cars, the Lancias and Audis; Austin Rover’s MG Metro 6R4 and Ford’s RS200 all of which will be on display in London became space-age museum pieces overnight.

Peugeot broke its 205 out of the museum and took it to America for the Pikes Peak hillclimb. Most famously, clothed as a 405, it helped Vatanen break the record for the 12-mile race to the Colorado sky in 1988.

The 405 T16 GR is a car Vatanen will never forget. “This was the diamond,” he says, “and like all unique jewellery, it only came out on special occasions!”

And the London Classic Car Show is one such occasion. An occasion made even more special with the news that Vatanen himself will attend the Premium Preview Evening on Thursday 18 February.

“I have such good memories of Britain,” admits the Scandinavian star. “I lived there at the start of my career and I always enjoy going back – it’s fantastic to meet such enthusiastic fans and it will be a nice opportunity to look back at some of our sport’s greatest cars.”

Tickets for the London Classic Car Show are on sale now and start at £23 (including booking fee) for single adult entry on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and rise to £65 for entry to Thursday’s Premium Preview Evening. This includes fast track entry, the best views of The Grand Avenue at the Turning Circle Viewing Platform, access to the exclusive Premium Lounge, a Show Handbook and even a glass of Joseph Perrier Champagne.
