New PAS24 Automatic Sliding Door System from Jack Aluminium

Commercial aluminium systems specialist Jack Aluminium has partnered with Geze UK to create the first PAS24 approved automatic sliding door system.

It’s been designed to fill a gap in the healthcare and care home sectors, where residents and care teams need the convenience of sliding doors, but safety and security is also paramount.

The new system was first launched at The FIT Show in May on the Geze stand which was part of the Council for Aluminium Building (CAB) pavilion.

Jeff Pearson, Sales & Marketing Director at Jack Aluminium Systems, explains:
“We knew from talking to customers that there was a real market for an automatic sliding door system that could meet the high levels of security that these healthcare facilities need.
“This new product resolves this issue for them. It’s available in single and double sliding door configurations. The doors are automatic so that residents, staff and visitors can easily enter the building. And it’s PAS24 approved and SBD compliant too – a great addition to our range of secure, communal entrance doors.
“At Jack Aluminium, we create systems that design out compromise and this is another great example of that. It offers a highly durable and secure remote access door system that aids the functionality of a building.”

The system uses Jack Aluminium’s JD47 Non-thermal Door & Shopfront system and Geze’s bespoke hardware.

Geze is selecting a network of approved fabricators to supply the PAS24 automated sliding door system.

Smoke Seals Halt the Silent Killer

Door seal specialists Norseal offers specifiers a comprehensive technical support package on the lifesaving matter of cold smoke seals. It is a sobering thought that more lives are lost in fires to smoke inhalation than burns.

In buildings like hotels, care homes, hospitals, and apartments where multiple rooms are accessed off a central landing or corridor, smoke can creep with frightening speed through the tiniest gaps with potentially fatal consequences.

While fire doors fitted with intumescent seals are highly effective in halting the spread of fire, the intumescent seals will only operate at the high temperatures generated by fire. They will not halt the progress of cold smoke. Should the smoke from a fire progress in advance of it, the fire door seals will not have started to intumesce, allowing cold smoke to pass through the gaps. This is why it is vital that fire doors are fitted with intumescent seals that can stop both fire and smoke.

Norseal has a comprehensive range of fire and smoke intumescent seals and can offer a full technical advice and back up service for specifiers and installers. The company’s fire and smoke intumescent strips protect both the spread of fire and smoke through a building and are compliant with BS 476-31.1 and BS EN 1634-3 cold smoke seal regulations.

All are independently tested to BS 476-22 and BS EN 1634-1 on a range of single and double leaf doorsets. Smoke seals do not only prevent the spread of smoke in a fire emergency, they also have more everyday benefits like keeping drafts out and even reducing noise. This makes them perfect for buildings like school and offices where acoustic insulation is a key factor.

Norseal’s best-selling fire and smoke seal is the Pyroplex Intumescent Rigid Box Pile which can be fitted to single and double leaf timber interior or exterior door sets. It combines intumescent material with a brush pile to prevent the transfer of both fire and smoke.

Another popular choice is the Pyroplex Intumescent Single Flipper, a practical option for hygienic spaces like hospitals, restaurants and care homes as they can easily be cleaned when spills occur to help to keep areas germ free.

Norseal’s technical team is on hand to answer any specification queries about fire, smoke and acoustic seals. The company also provides CAD drawingss, test data, certifications, fitting guides and datasheets as downloads to access in the design office or on site.

Part of the European Athmer Group, Norseal is the leading provider of specialist door seal solutions, plus a wide range of ancillary door products. The company has a long track record of innovation, developing products which meet and exceed the latest industry standards for fire and smoke protection, acoustic properties, accessibility and thermal insulation.

Products are backed by a qualified and experienced technical team offering advice and guidance on all aspects of intumescent and acoustic seals. As well as its core range of seals, Norseal supply a wide range of supplementary door products including fire-rated glazing, electrical and plumbing solutions, fire rated ventilation, letter plates, door viewers, threshold plates, weather seals, and finger protection products.

Codelocks enhances range with new Marine Grade finish

Codelocks unveils two new additions to its CL500 range, completing its mechanical series. New for Autumn 2019, the CL510 and CL515 Mortice Latch Black Marine Grade finish locks are suitable for outdoor and costal applications.

Reliable and flexible, the CL500 Marine Grade range is specially enhanced to withstand outdoor and maritime environments. The Marine Grade coating resists exposure to salt spray and moisture, helping to prevent damage caused by corroding.

Colin Campbell, managing director at Codelocks said:
“We pride ourselves on offering the widest possible range of products, that address the full spectrum of our customers’ needs. We’ve received numerous requests for a black finish, so we’ve combined this with the marine grade for the ultimate lock – supporting our vision of being able to provide smarter access for everyone
“It’s exciting to be revealing our new Marine Grade finish at the MLA Expo today. It has undergone rigorous salt spray testing and we are looking forward to seeing the environments in which our customers install this range.”

Ideal for outbuildings, construction sites, marina’s and homes by the water, the CL510 and CL515 provide simple coded external access for buildings that experience high traffic.

The locks boast large lever handles and the same robust features and coded access flexibility as the original CL500 range. The locks offer a code-free function, perfect for day-to-day use when unrestricted access may be required.

Cost-effective, easy to install and suitable for wooden doors, the CL510 and CL515 models offer over 2000 non-sequential code combinations and have been salt spray tested performing 1000 hours*.

Providing convenient, easy access, the CL500 Marine Grade range adds sophistication to any application with its aesthetically pleasing sleek, black finish.

Sustainable new key management solutions for Dundee and Angus College

Dundee and Angus (D&A) College has invested in a new master key cylinder platform and key management solution from the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware & Access Control Group, contributing towards the college’s sustainability ambitions.

D&A College delivers over 700 courses to around 16,000 students across three campuses, with two main sites in Dundee and one in Arbroath. It therefore required a robust master key cylinder system that could securely manage the high traffic using its facilities, while also satisfying the college’s key control needs.

The college’s previous master key system posed a risk because of the short-term patent protection that it offered. In addition, the college was seeking a better means of accounting for all the master keys it has in circulation. The solution? The new ASSA Triton² master key cylinder system and Traka 21 key management cabinet, which has recently been installed at all three of the college’s campuses.

ASSA Triton² delivers the longest patent protection available on the market, guarding against unauthorised key duplication until 2036. A high-end master key solution, ASSA Triton² is ideally suited to environments that require large and complex suites, such as D&A College. Offered with a comprehensive range of cylinders, the system’s unrivalled master keying capability means it can meet the security demands and complexity of the busy college with ease. The platform has been fitted at the college’s Kingsway campus, with plans to roll it out to the other two campuses in the future.

ASSA Triton² is in line with D&A College’s commitment to investing in sustainable technologies that can help reduce the institute’s carbon footprint and deliver long-term financial savings. In recent years, the college has won the ‘Carbon Reduction’ prize in the Green Gown Awards, which recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges from around the world. With ASSA Triton² offering patent protection up until 2036, the system offers the college a secure, long-lasting solution, helping it to meet its sustainability targets.

Then, to help the estates team manage key control across all three of its campuses, D&A College has opted for Traka 21, an efficient and easy-to-use key management solution. A standalone cabinet system, Traka 21 individually locks every key stored in place, enabling the college to trace and manage up to 21 critical keys or key sets. Access to keys stored in the system is granted via a secure PIN, limiting the opportunity for master keys to fall into the wrong hands. This new set-up ensures no master keys will ever leave the college’s sites, further increasing the security of the new suite.

Billy Grace, Head of Estates at D&A College, explains:
“Sustainability is a key issue for the college, and we’re very proud of the fact that we have achieved a 53 per cent carbon reduction since 2009. We have heavily invested in sustainable technologies, and the decision to choose ASSA Triton² is just the latest development in this commitment.
“With the patent protection on our previous master key cylinder system soon running out, this posed a substantial risk around key duplication. ASSA Triton² offers patent protection until 2036, which makes it a fantastic investment for the college, protecting us for the next 17 years against unauthorised key copying. Key personnel, such as our caretaking and maintenance staff, can then easily use the Traka 21 system to help manage master keys across all our three campus sites.
“Local supply was another big reason why we chose ASSA ABLOY, as it gives us reassurance that we’re able to get new keys cut the same day by authorised holders, if we needed to.
“We know the ASSA ABLOY brand is one that we can trust. The company was helpful and supportive during the competitive tender process, providing first class service throughout. With the install of ASSA Triton² beginning at the end of the 2019 academic year, it was then completed by mid-August, before the start of the next one. The turnaround has been seamless, and very impressive.”

Barry Harris, Door Safety & Security Consultant at the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware & Access Control Group, adds:
“Managing critical keys is still a challenge for many sites. Should these keys become lost or fall into the wrong hands, then this would be a big security threat for D&A College. Traka 21 helps overcome this challenge for the college, by authorising, securing and monitoring its master keys, and controlling and recording when and who is using these keys.
“Meanwhile, our new ASSA Triton² master key cylinder system delivers long-lasting security, with assured patent protection until 2036. This gives D&A College every confidence that they have invested in a platform that has been made and designed to last. We are thrilled to partner with such a leading college, offering a series of solutions that not only provide the highest standards of security and reliability, but contribute towards the college’s sustainability targets too.”

The Flintstones roll into Nantwich for Charity Launch!

Come along and ‘Meet the Flintstones’ as we roll into Nantwich town centre, Cheshire, on Saturday 19th October from 1pm onwards.

Join ‘Fred’ & ‘Barney’ as we pull out classic Citroën 2CV through the streets of Nantwich to gain support for ‘The 2CV Challenge’, which will take place in April 2020 in aid of Dementia UK.

The challenge will entail Steve ‘Flintstone’ Hudson (MD of Alutech Systems and JD UK Ltd) and challenge partner Rich ‘Rubble’ travelling back from the French Alps in a classic Citroën 2CV called ‘Flo’, while completing a series of challenges with a target of raising £100,000 for charity.

Steve Hudson (left) pictured with Flo the Citroën 2CV at the FIT Show 2019

Steve ‘Flintstone’ Hudson said:
"I chose to launch his ambitious road trip in my hometown of Nantwich on what is set to be a fun-filled weekend. Dressed as characters from the ‘The Flintstones’, myself and Rich are hoping to raise awareness of our biggest personal challenge to date.
"Every summer when I was growing up, my dad used to drive us down to France in an old Citroen. He absolutely loved that car, and as much as my siblings and I would fight like hell in the back all the way, they were some of the happiest times of my childhood.
"When my dad’s dementia began, there were many challenging moments, but one of the most painful was when he finally had to give up driving. Not only had it always been something he’d loved doing, but it felt like that moment also represented his loss of independence".

Flo the Citroën 2CV and the Alutech Team at the FIT Show 2019

Steve continued:
"We came up with the idea of ‘The 2CV Challenge’ earlier this year, when an old Citroen 2CV car overtook the coach Rich and myself were on and we said how much fun it would be to drive one again. It went from that, to driving it back from the Alps next year. Along the way we’ll be completing a tonne of challenges in order to raise as much money for Dementia UK as we can".

With a target of £100,000, some of the challenges that have already been set for us are:

  • Run Rabbit Run – Myself and Rich will play rock paper scissors, and the winner will drive ahead for 10 minutes, while the loser has to jog to catch up while wearing an Easter bunny outfit.
  • Strong Man – We will have a competition to see who can pull the 2CV the furthest in 30 seconds.
  • The Winner Takes It All – This is when we will take turns to sing EVERY Abba song (approximately 3 hours of torture). We will share clips on social media of each other and you can decide the winner, who will then enjoy a well-earned nap in the back while the loser continues the drive!

The Alutech Team promoting the fundraising at the FIT Show 2019

There are a number of ways to help ‘Flo’ and Team 2CV to reach our financial goal of £100k for dementia. Simply pledge some money on the dedicated JustGiving page because you believe in the cause, or challenge the team to do something fun or crazy to make the drive more fun!

If you’re an individual you can set us a challenge for £50, as long as it’s not against EU law! If you’re a company, then we’ll complete any challenge for £200, and we’ll share the evidence with you on video via social media, whilst giving your company a big shout out!

Pledges of any value are most welcome and all the money will go directly to the charity.

When donating through JustGiving please remember to suggest your challenge or bet when asked to leave a message at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/steve-hudson6 .

Alternatively, you can email steve@the2cvchallenge.com or visit www.the2cvchallenge.com, - tag #the2CVchallenge

We hope to see you there!!

Thanks,
Steve Hudson

Allegion adds Brio 286DL Locking Handle to its Established Range of Brio Dual Point Locks

Allegion UK, a leader in safety and security, has added the 286DL locking handle to its established range of Brio dual point locks for exterior folding applications.

It is ideal for both residential and commercial facilities, joining other Brio accessories for the 286 dual point lock used on Weatherfold 4s and 5c.

Designed to ‘suite’ with Brio 288 lever furniture, the 286DL locking handle has been specifically design engineered to secure timber and aluminium folding panels. The single action handle is a stylish alternative to two flush bolts. The product also enables the doors to fold flat.

The intelligent security-conscious design of the 286DL is discreetly hidden inside the aluminium stile or edge of a timber panel with minimal machining and quick fixing points thanks to the patented hinge blocks.

A variety of keepers allow for neat dressing and accurate alignment of the throw and panel, which improves the performance of perimeter weather seals.

This new addition allows joinery manufacturers to offer a lock and handle for access doors that can be used with a cylinder of choice.

David Newton, Brio UK general manager, explains:
“We routinely research and review the marketplace for folding and sliding door hardware systems, to see where Brio can add value for customers.
“The 286 dual point lock was developed as an alternative to using flush bolts on panels. The lock is less intrusive than flush bolts and also has the very considerable advantage of eliminating any bending down or reaching up to lock or unlock the door which is the downside of flush bolts. This makes it very friendly with regards to disabled access as wheelchair users will not have to rely on help to open doors.
The new locking handle is stylish, secure and simple – the perfect accompaniment for our folding door systems.”

Added to the design and manufacturing excellence is the company’s rigorous product testing and quality assurance.  The 286DL locking handle is cycle tested in excess of 100,000 operations and comes with a 10-year warranty. It’s available in a variety of finishes for matching flexibility, including stainless steel for coastal areas.

Full product details can be found on the Brio website: briouk.com.

KCC’s 2019 Fire Door Symposium highlights the serious consequences of ignoring Fire Door Safety

September 23rd to 29th marked the 7th Annual Fire Door Safety Week across the UK and Northern Ireland.

This important awareness-generating initiative is the brainchild of the British Woodworking Federation and the BWF Fire Door Alliance (formerly known as the BWF CERTIFIRE Scheme).

Over the last seven years it has become a pivotal week in the calendar of industry professionals as an industry campaign that seeks to increase understanding of the critical role that fire doors play in protecting life and property. The week-long campaign was supported by over 250 industry-related organisations this year.

KCC played a huge role in educating architects, designers, building or facilities managers and other industry professionals on the importance of fire door safety this year as part of Fire Door Safety week, by organising and hosting the 2019 Fire Door Symposium in the Waterfoot Hotel in Derry / Londonderry on September 26th.

The half-day event was specifically created to raise awareness of the correct specification, installation and maintenance of fire doors as a crucial part of any buildings fire protection strategy.

The symposium welcomed attendees from many professions and organisations including housing associations, councils, healthcare estate managers, facilities managers, architects, builders, property services professionals, county and district councils, ventilation professionals, fire officers and more.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director of ABLOY UK

In the morning, delegates first heard from Mr Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director of ABLOY UK, about the basic requirements for Fire and Escape door hardware covering all of the essential elements as defined in the constructions product directive allowing delegates to understand the difference between Fire and Escape doors, and more importantly what’s required for the design purpose of the doors intended use.

Alan Collins, Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA)

The second presentation came from Mr Alan Collins, on behalf of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA), who was presenting a newly approved RIBA CPD entitled “Powered Pedestrian Doors: Design and Understandings for Accessibility and Safety”.

Michael Skelding, General Manager & Secretaryof the
Door & Hardware Federation (DHF)

After a break, delegates were welcomed back to their seats to hear from Mr Michael Skelding, General Manager & Secretary of the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) who focused on fire safety and specifically on doors and hardware following the Grenfell Tower tragedy on June 14th, 2017.

Michael discussed the Grenfell Tower inquiry, analysing how the fire progressed, what failed to work and the disastrous consequences that ensued. Michael examined the problems for doors and hardware relating to specification, installation, maintenance, certification and compliance and discussed what needs to change to avoid further unneccessary tragedies.

Ian Howell

Mr Ian Howell, representing KCC’s Fire Door Inspections closed the seminar with a presentation focusing on “Fire doors and their inspection” and gave attendees an understanding of the importance of fire door maintenance and inspection in order to ensure they function as intended, ie. as a life saving device in the event of a fire emergency.

An introductory video clip showing the testing of three doors, two incorrectly specified, and what can happen in these instances created an eerie silence around the room as all attendees witnessed the unavoidable truth - the consequences of poorly-installed or unmaintained fire doors can be deadly, with flames bursting through the first door in just 4 minutes.

Attendees were able to discuss their queries or issues with representatives from industry experts including Elite Doors Ltd, GEZE, Firestop, Access2, KCC and Fire Doors Inspections who had all given their time to come over and support the awareness-raising event and assist attendees with any questions they had.

Neil McSherry

Speaking after the event, Neil McSherry, Associate Director and head of service in KCC said:
“We are delighted with the absolutely phenomenal response and attendance at today’s event. Our attendance today just goes to show how important a topic Fire Doors have become over recent times and we at KCC are honoured to be at the forefront of raising awareness of the importance of Fire Door safety within our industry.”

Mul-T-Lock Ecliq® Proves the Perfect Partner for Glenveagh National Park

Leading lock manufacturer Mul-T-Lock has provided Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal with over 50 of its eCLIQ® locks in order to manage access rights across the whole estate.

Spanning over 170 square kilometres, Glenveagh National Park is the second largest national park in Ireland, boasting a number of rugged mountains, pristine lakes, tumbling waterfalls and enchanted native oak woodland. At the centre of the Park on the edge of Lough Veagh is Glenveagh Castle, a late 19th century castellated mansion, built as a hunting lodge.

With multiple facilities located on the sprawling site, the Park required a high-security and fully customisable access control solution, and therefore opted for Mul-T-Lock’s eCLIQ® system.

The new and advanced eCLIQ® technology allows Park Managers to schedule individual access permissions for each lock, subsequently granting and revoking access to various areas of the estate whenever necessary.

Stephen Crowe, Regional Sales Manager for Mul-T-Lock, commented:
“At Glenveagh National Park there is a need to restrict public access from certain areas for safety reasons, but at the same time, relevant staff should be able to access these areas whenever required.
“Our eCLIQ® system proved the perfect solution for this, as administrators (those who manage the security system) can easily set-up tailored access permissions remotely via our CLIQ® Remote Web Manager software.
“With eCLIQ®, administrators also have the ability to set time-limited access – something that isn’t achievable with a mechanical system. For example, padlocks around the estate could be programmed to allow access to certain gates between Monday and Friday, from 8am to 6pm. It’s this customisation that makes our system so popular.”

The Mul-T-Lock system was specified and installed by Paul Speer at JP Speer Locksmiths, who added: “We now have over 50 eCLIQ® padlocks and cylinders securing gates, offices and the Visitor Centre within this impressive estate. The complete system is managed from the main office and once set up it is easily maintained, with the flexibility to change quickly whenever required.

“Another great feature with eCLIQ® is the way in which you can expand the system retrospectively when needed. Glenveagh National Park has used mechanical systems in the past, but these haven’t been able to satisfy its access control requirements. Mul-T-Lock’s eCLIQ® technology ensures that access rights are maintained for years to come.”

Pat Vaughan, District Conservation Officer at Glenveagh National Park, finished by saying:
“Mul-T-Lock’s eCLIQ® system is the perfect fit for our Park as it has all the features that such a vast estate as ours requires.
“During our summer season our visitor numbers quadruple and we have to employ seasonal staff to meet this demand. Having such a system as Mul-T-Lock’s eCLIQ® means that we can set up temporary access for these workers, with all the relevant access rights required.
“The eCLIQ® system also enables us to deactivate keys and revoke access at the click of a button. This is particularly helpful if any of our team accidently lose their keys, or if temporary staff forget to return keys after their time with us.
“We are extremely happy that we opted for the eCLIQ® system to secure our beautiful estate; it will stand the test of time for years to come and has all the features we require to manage, build and secure our Park and its future.”

The New Abarth 695 70th Anniversario Launches at 2019 Abarth Day

The new Abarth 695 70th Anniversario special edition was launched on Friday in Milan to celebrate 70 years since Abarth & C. was founded by Carlo Abarth (1908 - 1979).

Only 1,949 units are being produced and the new limited edition will be displayed for the first time at the 2019 Abarth Day, the largest European gathering of Abarth enthusiasts, hosted in the Milan Innovation District (MIND) this weekend.

The new Abarth 695 70th Anniversario is equipped with the new “Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile” to deliver improved grip and stability at high speeds and increases overall performance. The spoiler is manually adjustable, just like in races of old where it was not uncommon to see the pit mechanics adjust the spoiler to allow the driver to change the set-up of the car according to the track.

It can be adjusted in 12 different positions between zero and 60 degrees. In the maximum setting, the spoiler increases the aerodynamic load by up to 42kg at a speed of 124mph. This delivers improved vehicle dynamics and stability at high speeds.

The new “Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile" is a tribute to the founder's performance focus, which went beyond the quest for pure power, top speed and acceleration, focusing on the search and development of innovative technical solutions. It is precisely this continuous research that made him one of the pioneers and visionaries in the field of tuning.

The new Abarth 695 70th Anniversario was tested in the full-scale wind tunnel located in Orbassano, south of Turin, where Abarth tests all its vehicles. The facility was built in the seventies and has been continually updated to implement the latest technologies. This is the only wind tunnel in Italy, capable of allowing full-scale testing and high air speeds of up to 130mph.

Outside, the new Abarth 695 70th Anniversario features some iconic style cues from the past and present, including the new Monza 1958 green livery, a tribute to the colour of the first 500 Abarth that set six international records at Monza. Campovolo grey details, including the “Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile”, body kit, front and rear DAMs and mirror caps, scorpion decals on the bonnet and the chequered sticker on the roof complete the look.

The 17-inch SuperSport alloy wheels and red Brembo brake calipers are also standard. The Brembo brakes are fitted with four-piston aluminium calipers and 305mm discs at the front and 240mm discs at the rear, both self-ventilated. The Record Monza exhaust, limited slip differential and Xenon headlights all feature as standard.

Five exterior colours are available, including the exclusive new Monza 1958 green, Circuit Grey, Gara White, Scorpione Black and Podium Blue. The glorious racing past of the brand is also referenced by the badges on the body in heritage font, featuring the vintage Scorpion emblem.

Inside, the Abarth 695 70th Anniversario features exclusive "Sabelt Tricolore" seats, developed specifically for this special edition.  Each of the 1,949 units will have a numbered plaque, making the 695 70th Anniversario an authentic collectable.

The new 695 70th Anniversario is equipped with the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine which delivers 180hp and 250Nm of torque at 3,000rpm, with a top speed of 139mph (with spoiler set to zero degree position) while accelerating from zero to 62mph in just 6.7 seconds.

Uconnect™ 7-inch HD system with the DAB digital radio and navigation system, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Google Android AutoTM, are standard on the 695. The infotainment system has a high-definition screen and Abarth Telemetry, an integrated application created to measure performance. Completing the standard equipment are automatic climate control, daytime running lights, LED fog lights and specific mats.

The new Abarth 695 70th Anniversario is available to order from mid-October priced from £29,695 OTR.
