The Spring 2022 issue of Door Industry Journal is available Online Now!

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Spring 2022 issue of Door Industry Journal, the Voice of the UK Door and Gate Industry.

Warm sun is shining down outside my office as I write this blog. This means that winter is behind us, Easter is on its way, and - of course - as stated above, the spring issue of the DIJ is here.

I hope the weather is just as nice where you are, as you sit down to read this. But – before you reach for the sun cream – let me tell you a bit about what’s inside:

  • Tradify software is making life easier for many installation firms through a digital approach to job management and organisation (page 6)

  • Garador has launched a series of new brochures – in both print and digital formats – to showcase its extensive range (page 8)

  • Tentoma has released a RoRo StretchPack® packaging line for 6-sided sealed door packaging, which offers comprehensive protection against dirt and moisture (page 24)

  • One-Step Marketing has written a handy guide on how to maximise the marketing reach of recent installations (page 54)

  • Mydocking has developed a new van docking portal – the VS250 – for the parcel distribution sector, which boosts efficiency by sealing the area between the van and docking area (page 92)

  • Hörmann UK is combining visual style, security and thermal efficiency with a new range of aluminium entrance doors (page 106)

  • Strongdor has provided a handy specification guide for anyone who installs steel doors for customers (page 112)

  • C-Prox Quantek is reporting strong sales of its touch and proximity switches, which enable automatic door activation and access control (page 108)

I hope you enjoy the magazine and have a good Easter. I’ll be back with you in a few months’ time for our summer issue.

Derek Hibbart

Editor, Door Industry Journal

Show Success for Garador

Garador’s large stand at the recent National Homebuilding and Renovating Show drew record crowds eager to learn about new technology and the latest design ideas for modern garage doors.

The Garador stand included a large range of full-sized garage doors to demonstrate some of the new styles and designs now available, and Garador’s team of experts were kept very busy throughout the show answering questions about everything from paint durability to special sizes.

“Technology and security were high on everyone’s agenda,” said Garador’s Man
aging Director Neil Discombe.
“Visitors to the stand were particularly interested in the latest electric operator technology for garage doors, including our “smart ready” Series 4 GaraMatic operators which can be fully controlled using Android or iOS smart phones.”

Neil says there was also a lot of interest in environmental aspects and how choosing the right garage door can help reduce energy use.
“Some of the visitors to the stand were surprised when they learned about our highly insulated thermally efficient garage doors,” said Neil. “This was an aspect many had not previously considered.”

The Garador stand also displayed their ultra-thermally efficient and secure FrontGuard front doors and these too attracted a lot of attention.

The Garador team helped both individual homeowners and also professionals in the building trade through the process of fitting requirements, sizing and product specification and, at the end of the show, found they had taken record orders.
“Overall, after two difficult years, it was hard to predict on visitor numbers to the show,” said Neil.
“However, with 24,000 visitors over four days, it clearly worked very well and we were especially delighted with the success of our stand. Visitor numbers definitely exceeded all our expectations.”
To find out more about Garador’s product range please visit www.garador.co.uk or call 01935 443722.

Lotus restarts Hethel factory tours after £100 million upgrade

One of the world’s best-known performance car production facilities – Hethel, the home of Lotus since 1966 – is reopening to the public.

Factory tours of the iconic Norfolk site were paused in November 2017 as the £100 million redevelopment began. With the Emira, the last petrol-powered car from Lotus, now in production in an all-new, state-of-the-art assembly hall, they will restart.

The tour programme has been developed by the experiential team within the recently launched Lotus Advanced Performance division and will begin on Monday 4 April. The booking platform is live now on www.lotuscars.com.

Simon Lane, Director, Lotus Advanced Performance, commented:
“Tours of the Hethel site were part of the Lotus story for many years and hugely popular. We get emails and calls every week with people asking about them but, with all the development work on site, it was not appropriate to have the public here. With the Emira now in production, I’m delighted to announce that the time is right to relaunch the factory tours.”
Guests will arrive and gather in the Retail Centre where refreshments will be available. There they will learn about the ongoing transformation of Lotus, and experience for themselves how all Lotus showrooms will look in the future.

Under the leadership of an expert guide, the story of Lotus at Hethel – past, present and future – will be brought to life. Guests will walk through older sections of the factory where, most recently, the Elise, Exige and Evora were built, before heading into the all-new Emira hall. They will see the new automated elements of the car’s production – a first for Lotus – as well as how much of the process remains ‘hands-on’.

Outside, the walking route will pass the dynamic test areas, including the famous 2.2-mile Hethel test track that has hosted some of the most famous names in the history of motorsport – Jim Clark, Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Ayrton Senna and countless others.

The Hethel factory tours will run Monday to Thursday every week, with tour groups consisting of up to eight people. There will be two groups per day with starts at 10am and 2pm, with each tour lasting approximately two hours.

On selected days there is the option to upgrade to a Heritage Tour, which includes a visit to Classic Team Lotus. A separate business situated just across the road from the main Lotus facility, it’s run by Clive Chapman – the son of Lotus founder, Colin Chapman – and includes countless historic Lotus race cars.

Minimum age for guests on all tours is 10 years and all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult, with not more than two children per adult. All elements are fully accessible to wheelchair users, and all guests will receive a specially designed lanyard and pin badge as a memento of their trip to Hethel. No photography will be allowed.

The Lotus Factory Tour is priced £95 per person and the Lotus Factory & Heritage Tour is £140 per person. Book now at https://www.lotuscars.com/en-GB/factory-tours.

Pyramid Aluminium launch energy-saving SlimFold bi-fold door

Pyramid Aluminium has launched its SlimFold bi-fold door that achieves a 1.4 W/m2K U-value with standard double glazing.

SlimFold offers easy clip-in beading, with a 45mm wide slimline sash and is the latest addition to the Purelight aluminium system range.

Thanks to an innovative insulated thermal break, SlimFold bi-fold doors achieve a 1.4 U-value with a Low-E argon-filled warm edge glass unit, complying with the June changes to Part L of the building regulations.

SlimFold has a super slim 45mm sash to give a narrow 100mm meeting stile, one of the slimmest on the market. Sashes can be up to 1.1m wide and 2.5m high, to create large glass areas with minimal frames, for incredible views.
“There has always been a high demand for more glass and less frame so we’re really excited that we’ve achieved such a slim profile to help homeowners create better views,” says Paul Bailey, Managing Director of Pyramid Aluminium.
“The most impressive thing about SlimFold is that there is no compromise. Despite having one of the slimmest frames on the market, it still offers incredible thermal efficiency and security. We knew that installers were preparing for changes to part L, so we had to create something which complied with this. The multi-point shoot bolt locking system also features two hooks and three deadbolts for extra security, so it is the perfect all-round bi-fold door option.”
The SlimFold bi-fold is built with installers in mind, with an aluminium clip-in bead making quick work of glazing, for an easy and speedy installation. Pre-delivery assembly and inspection also saves time on site.

“On top of all the performance benefits, SlimFold is also super easy to fit. Every door is assembled on a vertical jig and inspected before delivery and our right first time manufacturing process saves customers time on site.”

TD68 Opening Doors in the City

Jack Aluminium’s TD68 and JCW systems have featured in a new entrance to London’s Exchange House.

Essex-based fabricator, IDF Aluminium, collaborated with revolving door suppliers, Boon Edam, to provide a new entrance for this impressive building. Located in Broadgate, in the City of London, Exchange House is an innovative ‘building-bridge hybrid’, featuring four structural arches to bear the load of the building, which runs directly over 18 railway lines.

The new entrance features a revolving door, a single access door and curtain walling. IDF installed the TD68 access door, as well as curtain walling using the JCW system.
“This was an exciting project to work on in the City of London. It’s an impressive building and we’re really happy to have been chosen to install the new entrance,” says Will Woods, Director at IDF Aluminium.
“Working with Jack Aluminium is great because I can get a system which works for pretty much any product I need. We use the TD68 a lot because it’s a great entrance door system and being able to get curtain walling from them also makes my life a lot easier.
“On top of all that, their service is fantastic. The aluminium market has obviously been tough recently, but they’ve been very upfront and honest throughout and have kept communicating with us which has been very reassuring.”
Having passed the stringent STS 202 test, the TD68 thermal door and shopfront system is a highly popular choice for commercial buildings where higher security is needed.
“Being situated in such a busy part of London, durability and security were crucial to the entrance of this building, making the TD68 the perfect solution,” adds Ash Pearson, Sales Manager at Jack Aluminium.
“IDF are a fantastic company who work on some impressive projects, and it’s great to see them installing our commercial aluminium products in some very notable locations across the country.”

Watch the windows: Eight things which could null your car insurance

Motorists are being warned of the risk of invalidating their car insurance and being asked to check their policies by experts.

The car leasing experts at LeaseCar.uk have highlighted eight ways drivers in the UK can null their insurance without realising.

Reading and understanding the intricacies of car insurance policies is essential as there are several things such as the wrong home address that can invalidate the policy.

Not only can these things void insurance policies and cause an inability to claim – but they can also carry hefty financial penalties and sometimes legal ramifications too.

A spokesperson for LeaseCar.uk said:
“It can be easy to gloss over the terms and conditions of many things, especially your car insurance – but this could in fact put you at risk of invalidating it.
“Small changes to your lifestyle may seem trivial but it is important that you notify your insurance provider as to avoid any charges and be fully covered.
“There are also things to bear in mind whilst driving to ensure that if the unfortunate occurrence of an accident does occur, you can claim.
Misjudging your mileage

When filling out any insurance policy it will ask you to estimate your annual mileage and this needs to be as accurate as possible. Taking your commute as well as your leisure activities into account will provide a semi-accurate number however, it’s best to allow some tolerance for those unexpected trips.

New job

The nature of your occupation has an effect on the price of your car insurance. This is because some jobs such as taxi drivers, food delivery drivers and couriers spend more time on the roads, and are therefore more likely to be involved in a motoring incident. Make sure to be accurate with your job title because even a subtle difference can affect your policy.

Change of address

The location in which you live has an effect on your premium, this is for a variety of reasons including crime and traffic density. By changing your address and not informing your insurer, you could be getting a cheaper premium and this can invalidate your policy.

Looking after the vehicle

Keeping your car roadworthy is important not only for road safety but also to ensure your insurance policy remains valid. MOTs and services should be carried out at regular intervals to keep the policy valid.

Window tints

Any modifications made by you or the previous owner before taking out a policy must be reported to the insurance provider – no matter how small they may be. If the work is yet to be carried out, it is also essential the modifications stay within the legal limit. For example, window tints on side windows must let at least 70% of light through. Any more than this and they become illegal.

Fronting

Parents or older drivers who falsely claim they are the main driver of a vehicle when it is in fact a younger, less experienced driver can in fact render the insurance void. Although this often makes insurance policies cheaper for young drivers, it is also illegal.

Declaration of points

Insurance providers must be aware of any current points on your licence – these usually stay on your licence for four years. If you try to claim on your insurance and the provider finds out you haven’t declared your points (or an incorrect amount) they can refuse to payout. Driving penalties increase the perceived risk on the road, so it’s best to think twice before trying to get a cheap quote.

Commuting

Ensuring you’re covered to drive to work can stop you from getting in trouble with your insurer. Not declaring your car’s class of use can be a serious offence and you won’t be covered by your insurance provider if you were commuting at the time.
