American Classics Take Centre Stage at the Race Retro Live Online Auction

The Race Retro Live Online Auction will showcase a significant number of iconic American classics, all of which will be offered on Saturday 27th March.

No less than four Mustangs, two Corvettes, two Camaros, one Buick and one Studebaker all form part of the line-up, not to mention three luxurious motorhomes also from across the pond.

You can view the lot list in full on the Silverstone Auctions website here.

In production for just one year was the highly desirable 1963 Chevrolet Corvette C2 ‘Split-Window’ and this example is quite simply one of the best of its kind.

The car had many Concours successes throughout the 1980’s and prior to the vendor purchasing it, he had the car inspected by marque expert Andy Cannizzo, who reported that “he hadn’t seen many in that condition”.

Finished in Sebring Silver, it has a four-speed manual gearbox, and it is remarkably original throughout. Estimated at £100,000 – 120,000.

Another superbly presented example is the 1959 Studebaker Silver Hawk Racer, which was prepared for the St Marys Trophy and UK/European pre-1960 Saloon Car Racing.

Built to high standards by Patrick Watts Racing, it was fitted with a mildly tuned, 350ci Chevy engine from Daytona Design in Florida, a Borg-Warner T10 gearbox and a Dana 44 rear axle, a fairly bullet-proof combination that shouldn’t need touching for many races.

This winning race car has a significant amount of history, is ultra-competitive, well maintained, admired everywhere and sensibly guided at £44,000 – 55,000.

Sales Controller, Gary Dunne, commented:
“We have some super American classic and competition cars in this sale, the variety is fantastic! I would encourage anyone interested to visit our website to view the entire lot listing, read the full descriptive details for each lot, where you will also find extensive images and video content”.

Of the four Mustangs in the sale, there is a rare specification 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 which is in super condition.

Finished in Wimbledon White with a black interior and Black Knit Vinyl Décor bucket seats, its early life in the dry climate of Arizona probably accounts for its remarkably well-preserved condition.

Out of the 7,014 Boss 302s produced, only 52 were equipped with a Traction-Lok rear axle and just five with the Shaker Hood, so this is an especially rare and highly desirable Mustang which is estimated at £60,000 – 70,000.

The 1965 Ford Mustang 289 Sport Coupe (Notchback) Race Car is a well-prepared competition example, finished to road-car quality in the distinctive Black and Gold of the famous Hertz 'Rent-A-Racer' Shelby GT350s from 1966.

The car was imported into the UK in 1999 and has since had significant investment, including an engine rebuild in 2019. Estimated at £45,000 – 55,000, this car is complete with its FIA HTP, Class CT10 and is UK-road legal.

Silverstone Auctions are offering dedicated, one-to-one, virtual viewing of cars of interest from 24th February through to the 26th March. Viewing the cars in person is permitted to specialists who have been instructed to inspect vehicles of interest on your behalf and members of the trade. Bookings are arranged by appointment and this should be made by calling 01926 691141.

Silverstone Auctions are closing their catalogue in just over one week, on Monday 8th March. Entries are still invited to join the rapidly growing lot list for their live online auction. The UK market leader classic car auction house can be contacted on can be contacted on 01926 691141, by email enquiries@silverstoneauctions.com or via their website .

Revealed: the UK Tradespeople who Drink the Strongest Tea

Tradespeople are famous for their tea breaks, but now new research has revealed which trades have the strongest brews.

  • The average UK tradesperson drinks three cups of tea per shift, or 15 a week

  • Bricklayers have the strongest brews; plasterers have the weakest
  • Electricians have the most tea breaks

The study, conducted by IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest supplier of specialist ironmongery, asked 500 UK tradespeople to pick out their favourite shade of tea from a colour chart, and it was revealed that bricklayers have the strongest drinks.

Plumbers and builders followed closely behind in the rankings, who also prefer their drinks on the darker side.

At the other end of the scale plasterers have the weakest tea of all tradespeople, with joiners and landscapers not too far behind.

The UK tradespeople which have the strongest brews are:
  1. Bricklayers
  2. Plumbers
  3. Builders
  4. Electricians / Carpenters
  5. Painter and Decorators / Building Surveyors
  6. Landscapers
  7. Joiners
  8. Plasterers
However, it is electricians who drink the most of it. Nearly half (45%) of those in the electrical trade have four or more cups of tea a day.

In contrast, builders and landscapers drink the least, with almost two in five (38%) having just one or two tea breaks a day.

The average for UK tradespeople is three drinks per shift, totalling 15 cups a week, but this varies by region. Workers in Sheffield and Edinburgh have the most tea breaks, averaging nearly four per day, while those in Belfast have the fewest. Nearly three in five (57%) tradespeople in the Northern Irish capital stop just once or twice for a brew.

As well as generally favouring stronger drinks, the research also found that tradespeople tend to like their brews sweet. The most common way to take their tea is with two sugars (28%), with plumbers being the most likely to have a sweet tooth. Nearly two thirds (63%) of them have at least two spoonfuls.

Interestingly though, despite the stereotypes, it seems that tea is slowly going out of fashion amongst tradespeople. Each passing generation is drinking fewer cups than the last, with 18-to-24-year-olds having by far the lowest average of all the age groups, and over 65s the highest.

The young workers who do drink tea are considerably more likely to have sugar than their older colleagues. While nearly half (46%) of the 18-24s surveyed have two or more spoonfuls, this drops as low as 17% among 55-64s and 19% among over 65s.

Dominick Sandford, Director and Head of Merchandising & Marketing at IronmongeryDirect, said:
“Most people will offer tradespeople a hot drink as soon as they enter their home, but it’s interesting to see that this long-standing tradition may be dying out, with younger workers drinking far less tea.
“Our research has shown that some trades tend to have far stronger brews than others, so if you’re making a drink for a bricklayer, maybe leave the teabag in for longer if you’re unsure!
“However, how people have their tea is a really personal thing, so it’s always best to ask for their preferences.”

“Buzz” the local Buzzard spotted at Garador

A beautiful Common Buzzard has been frequently sighted at Yeovil-based garage door manufacturer, Garador.

“Buzz” as he’s sometimes called by the staff in the factory and offices, has been sighted on multiple occasions over the past few months.

With a large wingspan of over one metre in length he most certainly grabs your attention when you see him. He’s such an extraordinarily beautiful creature and always makes an impression when he’s gliding through the air or perched on a tree.

There are all sorts of insects and birds in the grasslands, fields and forests surrounding Garador, so there is likely a good source of food for the bird of prey. Plus there are lots of trees which are ideal as a lookout point.

According to Wikipedia, the common buzzard (Buteo buteo) is a medium-to-large bird of prey which has a large range. A member of the genus Buteo, it is a member of the family Accipitridae.

The species lives in most of Europe and extends its breeding range across much of the Palearctic as far as the northwestern China (Tien Shan), far western Siberia and northwestern Mongolia.

Garador has been manufacturing garage doors in Yeovil since 1948. You can view their full range of garage doors online at www.garador.co.uk

100 Years of Sliding Success for P C Henderson

Sliding door gear manufacturer, P C Henderson, is proud to celebrate its 100th year in business - signifying an entire century of high quality manufacturing, product innovation and a dedication to worldwide exporting.

Founded by Percy Cecil Henderson on the 24th February 1921, the company has come a long way since its humble beginnings where the business started in an unused loft space of a paint and varnish factory. Fast forward 100 years and the company has offices in the UK, Ireland, Holland and China, exports to over 70 countries worldwide and is firmly positioned as the go to provider for sliding door gear.

Speaking about the companies continued success, Trevor Cossins, Managing Director at P C Henderson, commented:
“Celebrating a centenary in business is a huge achievement, it puts us amongst a rare group of companies which have truly withstood the test of time and it certainly isn’t something that happens by chance”.
The company operates out of its 2.9 acre Bowburn based manufacturing plant where it has resided for the last 52 years. Showing no signs of slowing down, the company has achieved record sales, multiple award wins and some of the most successful product launches in its history in the last 3 years alone.
“In the late 1920s’ Percy Cecil Henderson established the export side of the business – developing strong relationships in South Africa, New Zealand and China – regions which we still have a strong presence in today. I believe this courageous move has been a huge factor in the company’s longevity and success over the years”.
P C Henderson has won multiple awards for its exporting achievements, most notably ‘UK Export Business of the Year’ at the British Chamber Awards – a highly prestigious and respected award. Exporting currently accounts for 70% of the company’s annual sales with products reaching all four corners of the globe.
“Our expertise and dedicated team ethos has also been a huge contributing factor over the years. We have a great team of highly skilled and passionate individuals - almost 60% of our team members have been with the company for over 10 years and 30% for over 20 years”.
Product innovation is also high on the company’s agenda – boasting a market leading range of over 60 products catering for sliding doors weighing up to a huge 8000kg. Its products can be seen in a number of high profile applications across the globe including Kandahar Airport in Afghanistan, the Amphia Hospital in Holland, Disneyland Shanghai and the Four Seasons Hotel in Tianjin, China.

Trevor continues
“Our products are renowned in the industry for being built to last, we still receive enquiries for restoration projects installed in the 1950s and 1960s. It’s this which has firmly positioned us as the go to provider for sliding door gear - customers come to us because they know the product will withstand the test of time”.
The company enters its second century of business with ambitious growth plans - including a number of major product launches and expansion plans for the American markets. Driving forward with digital innovation is also high on the company’s agenda as well as ensuring product design meets the ever changing ways in which sliding doors are used in residential, commercial and industrial applications across the globe.

You can Count on GEZE to Control your Visitor Flow

Knowing the true occupancy and the flow of people in and out of a store, office or building is now more important than ever.

As the figures for COVID remain high and the need for Lockdowns and Tier restrictions continue to be part of everyday life, government advice demands that retailers limit the numbers in store by “calculating the maximum number of customers that can reasonably follow social distancing guidelines.”

Unsurprisingly this has led to queues forming outside many shops and so the need for queue management. So far this has meant a member of staff, sometimes two, standing at the door counting people in and then counting them out again - a time-consuming task which is liable to errors.  And not the best use of staff that could be more profitably engaged elsewhere and not ideal for the poor staff member left standing in the cold!

A solution that provides queue management automatically can save money, make better use of staff and meet government requirements is what’s required.

GEZE, a world leader in door and window control technology, has introduced GEZE Counter, a customer flow control solution specifically addresses these challenges.

The two systems, GEZE Counter Plus and GEZE Counter Connect integrate with automatic doors to provide controlled admission by a simple but effective traffic light system and meets the need for social distancing. GEZE Counter systems provide analytics by hour, day or week to give management greater control and ensure the health and safety of employees and customers

The systems employ a simple traffic light arrangement – wait whilst the light is red and the doors are de-activated, and enter when the light is green. There are two versions available, meaning there is a system for every building – an internet or cloud based system for full analysis, control and management either locally or at head office, or a local network system to a designated PC or smart phone to view, control or manage analytics in store.

Customer flow control and successful store layout for maximising sales have always played an important role for retailers. The coronavirus pandemic has brought these considerations increasingly into focus because customer flow control involves analysing the number of customers and the routes they take, and directing and controlling these correspondingly.

But now, the main task of flow control systems is to ensure that only the correct number of persons can enter a building or rooms under control and safely. This allows each customer to better socially distance themselves, they feel safer and retailers comply with government guidelines.  Escape routes are unaffected.

Customers easily identify that the retailer or site management have thought seriously about the issue and acted accordingly, with a visible solution, generally giving a much more pleasant experience once indoors.

Adam Presdee, Service Director said:
‘The GEZE Counter systems are a cost-effective way to manage the number of people in and out of a building and it frees up a number of staff who can be more productively employed elsewhere in the building’.

Open the door to safety, security and efficiency

With efficiency, aesthetics and fire safety being a top priority for housebuilders, Mark Lester, Internal Door Manager at Hörmann UK, discusses the key features and the latest innovations available for the domestic market.

The safety and security of property and its’ occupants is obviously high on the list of priorities when choosing building materials, fixtures, and finishes, whilst not compromising on practicality and style. With UK Government statistics showing that in 2018/19 there were over 29,000 fires in domestic dwellings, the fitting of modern and effective fire doors will help provide peace of mind and protect property and people.

A fire door plays an important role in not only in protecting against flame and heat but also in preventing the penetration of smoke through the door.  Today the most common fire door fitted in a domestic setting is a FD30, which will provide protection of at least 30 minutes. However, there are doors on the market that can offer protection of 60, 90 and 120 minutes, if required.

The specification of fire doors for domestic dwellings is covered by Building Regulations - Part B. Compliance with the regulations means that for buildings of more than two levels a fire door should be fitted on any doorway of a habitable room leading onto a stairwell or escape route, but excluding bathrooms and toilets.  In addition, in the case of an integral or attached garage a fire door should always be fitted between the main house and garage, and with the increase of mixed use buildings they should be fitted between the residential and business elements.

Industry bodies, such as the Door and Hardware Federation, recommend the use of fire resisting door sets, which are supplied complete with all essential parts from a single source.
Hörmann’s BaseLine, DesignLine and GlassLine ranges are supplied as a complete door set, including door leaf, frame, intumescent seals, smoke seals, hinges, hardware etc. It is designed and manufactured to perform as a single unit and tested and certified as such.

The testing and certification of fire doors sets is to BS EN 16034, which sets out the product standards and performance criteria which must be met for the door to be used for either fire resistance or smoke control.  Door sets which comply with this standard require a certificate of constancy of performance which is issued by a notified product certification body, along with a declaration of performance and the application of a CE mark.

However, with the withdrawal of the UK from the EU, following the Brexit transition period, some changes in product accreditation now apply. The new UKCA mark became effective from 1st January 2021 and will coexist with the CE mark for 12 months. From 1st January 2022 the CE mark will cease to be recognised in the UK and will be fully replaced by UKCA mark.

With this in mind, housebuilders should ensure door sets are compliant with the above and due diligence is taken throughout the specification process.

In addition, fire doors that are supplied as complete door sets, shorten installation time as the frame, architrave and door are all supplied together. This enables the installer to fit the door quickly and easily to various wall sizes, whilst also making maintenance simple and easy, diminishing any potential disruption for the homeowner.  Fire doors should be fitted by a fully qualified, professional installer to ensure that the integrity of the door is not compromised in any way during the fitting process.

It is important that the internal door selected is not only fit for purpose, but also complements the overall design scheme of a property.  Whilst importance has traditionally been placed on the functionality of internal doors, manufacturers are now focusing of supplying a wide range of door styles which meet both the practical and aesthetic requirements of individual projects.  From elegant classic styling to more contemporary modern designs, fire doors are offered in a wide choice of colours such as modern greys, traditional woodgrains and on-trend colours such as Taupe.

The latest advancements in aesthetics are also placing greater importance on texture, with decorative surfaces such as slate, linen, and horizontal woodgrains being a popular choice, particularly when available in a range of shades and finishes. A particularly fun choice for kitchens, children’s bedrooms and playrooms is the ultra-matt contemporary surface which can be written on with chalk.

When choosing modern fire doors for a project today, it is now easy to satisfy all the required safety and security aspects, without having to compromise when considering the overall design and finish of the property.

For further information on Hörmann UK’s fire rated doors, call 01530 516880 or visit: www.hormann.co.uk .

Garage Door Specialist rebuilds Rallycross Car during Covid Lockdown

For the last five years garage door fitter Mark Finch, proprietor of Finch Fabrications has been living very much in the fast lane.

After a high-speed roll at Lydden Hill in November last year Mark’s rallycross car was damaged beyond repair, so a new car had to be built. Racing in the national championship, the Retro class cars have to be pre 1991 and Mark drives a highly modified MK3 Ford Fiesta.

Mark found a good replacement shell and after the steel fabrication was done, GRP and Kevlar panels were fixed to a skeleton of the new body shell, a roll cage was welded in and the usual safety items such as a racing seat, harness and a plumbed-in all important fire extinguisher was fitted. All the running gear from the old car was checked and replaced if necessary, including the cars heart, the Cosworth developed BDA engine.

Carrying out all the fabrication himself and working through the Covid lockdown on council contracts, Mark certainly kept busy. Using old skills from his engineering days and working out the best way to manufacture the body panels Mark found the learning curve was steep, but the results stunning.

Mark’s son is a Flight Officer in the RAF and supporting the charity RAFBF (The Royal Air Force Benevolent fund), Mark was invited to RAF Scampton where the 2020 Red arrows endorsed the car by signing the roof.

Mark says:
“To be invited onto the runway to see the jets land and park in front of you was an awesome experience and one that I’ll never forget. The way the guys present themselves shows they are truly at the top of their game, 80% ultimate fliers and 20% supermodels”.
After a socially distanced chat with the pilots and a photoshoot the job was done.

Marks last weekend of racing for the season was held part daytime and part run under floodlights at Lydden Hill on 5th and 6th of December 2020. As the championship is classed as an “Elite” sport it meant that during lockdown the event was held without spectators.

New Handle Portfolio launched to Showcase Aluminium Window and Door Systems

A handle collection has been curated by HOPPE (UK) to support aluminium window and door manufacturers looking to specify compatible hardware for their products.

Aluminium is known for being a versatile metal. Its flexibility, strength and corrosion resistance make it the ideal building material. It is also significantly more environmentally friendly than other metals; it is 100% recyclable, meaning that carbon savings increase each time it is recycled. This makes it an increasingly popular choice for doors and windows.

The new leaflet has been published by HOPPE (UK) to show the variety of hardware available that can be used with aluminium doors and windows.

Andy Matthews, head of sales at HOPPE (UK), said:
“We have collated a selection of high-quality products that are compatible with aluminium window and doors systems both in terms of design and aesthetics. The leaflet does not just cover handles, we’ve also included panic hardware and door closers to offer suitable solutions for all applications.”
The collection also includes one of the newer additions to HOPPE; the lift and slide patio door handle. Lift and slide patio doors allow the use of larger glass panels compared to other types of door systems. Despite the additional weight, lift and slide door systems are much easier to use than traditional sliding doors and the flush design of the handle complements the slimness of the aluminium frames with its minimalist design.

As part of HOPPE’s commitment to high quality products, all HOPPE handles have a 10-year mechanical operation guarantee, as long as assembly and maintenance guidelines are followed.

To get a free copy of the brochure, contact Andy on andy.matthews@hoppe.com or 01902 484 400.

DHF hosts a series of bespoke webinars on UKCA marking for its members

DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) has kicked off a series of bespoke webinars regarding UKCA marking replacing CE marking following Brexit, with the first one held on Wednesday 10th February.

Specifically tailored for members of the ‘Garage Door Group’, the first webinar was delivered via Zoom and hosted by DHF’s Training & Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins.

It served to highlight the pertinent points regarding the replacement of the CE mark following Brexit, relevant to manufacturers and suppliers of domestic garage doors, for example, non-compliant competitors offering cut price hold-to-run powered doors operated by long range radio controls, and the potential problem that existing system three test reports may not be valid between GB, NI & EU.  On the latter point, DHF is awaiting clarification from a range of sources, including the UK Construction Products Association, Construction Products Europe, BSI and, indirectly, the UK Government Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.

Webinars of a similar nature will follow shortly for DHF’s other groups which cover the locks and building hardware, metal and timber doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, and automated gate sectors.  The webinars will seek to provide detailed guidance on what each specific group will need to consider now that CE marking is no longer recognised in the UK.

From 1 January 2021, the new UKCA mark is the only recognised conformity mark for the GB market (although not be recognised in the EU 27 nor in Northern Ireland) and applies to goods placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland), replacing the existing CE mark.

During November 2020, DHF hosted a four-part webinar series highlighting the details of the changes, such as moving goods from the EU 27 to GB, and a series of briefing papers were created to guide its members.  Now, it is ‘drilling down’ into the particulars, and in so doing, highlighting what each group will need to be aware of going forward, although this information is subject to change.

DHF’s General Manager and Secretary, Michael Skelding says:
“Our initial series of webinars, delivered in November, were extremely well-received, and we are delighted with the positive feedback already being received on this one.

“There are obvious complexities surrounding UKCA now that the old CE mark has been replaced, and each group will experience its own unique set of challenges.
“In delivering a thorough overview of the potential problems for each individual sector, we are confident that our members will be able to navigate the intricacies of the new CE/UKCA marking system in the UK, relevant to their area.”

Visit R+T Digital the "Worlds Leading Trade Fair" for the Door and Gate Industry on us!

Take a virtual journey next week, free of charge to Stuttgart in Germany and visit the Worlds Leading Trade Fair which, due to the pandemic, is being held digitally for the first time ever.

With the first "R+T digital", Messe Stuttgart will be taking a new and different route for its expo, R+T Digital this spring.

R+T - the world's leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun protection systems – is expanding its offer in virtual space and, in this connection, has conceived a hybrid event format.

From 22nd to 25th February 2021, the participants at R+T digital will have the opportunity to present their newly developed product innovations on an international platform and to benefit from a comprehensive transfer of knowledge within the sector.

The format will be complemented by hybrid framework events, both streamed online on the platform of R+T digital, as well as held on location in Stuttgart.

Get a feel for how the Digital Exhibition will be presented in this video:

Sebastian Schmid, Department Director Technology at Messe Stuttgart says:
"With R+T digital, we want to provide our exhibitors and partners with digital access to our world visitor network, so that in this framework the product novelties developed for 2021 can be presented in detail. This is our overriding objective for R+T digital. For this reason, the presentation of the R+T Innovation Award is the focal point of the event concept."
Sebastian continues:
"Digital event formats will not and cannot replace live trade fairs. R+T is and will remain the highlight event of the roller shutters, doors/gates and sun protection systems sector.
With R+T digital, we have developed a new format, complementary to the physical meeting at R+T 2022 in Stuttgart, and we would thus like to bring the sector together virtually already in 2021."
