Take the Alutech price comparison challenge!

JD UK, the main UK distributor of Alutech sectional garage doors and automation, is still one of the most competitively priced in the market and is asking potential customers to challenge that statement by requesting a new price list or even better, a comparative quote.

JD UK’s new sectional and automation price list for 2021 was launched and distributed to customers in December 2020.

The new look price list now includes full, comprehensive pricing for the two exciting new product launches from Alutech in 2020; the Prestige range, which allows for bespoke, digitally printed designs, and the Panoramic range, which offers the option of a fully glazed door.

JD UK National Sales Manager, Jason Wade, said:
“Not only have we remained one of the most competitive on price, but we are now offering products that will allow our installers to stand out from their competitors with innovative products and bespoke options to suit all customer requirements. Bespoke design without designer prices. Our customers also benefit from UK-based customer service and technical support.”
To request a price list or comparative quote, please call 01924 472924, email sales@jdukltd.co.uk, visit www.jdukltd.co.uk or find JD UK on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

New finishes and colours from Hörmann UK

Adding to an already extensive, marketing leading choice of surface finish and colour options for garage doors, Hörmann UK have introduced a number of new and eye-catching developments for their range of sectional doors.

Two new, modern finishes have been launched.  Slategrain (image below) is a natural finish replicating the curves and structures of slate for M and L-ribbed sectional doors.  Initially available in both white and Anthracite grey, 15 preferred, and a choice of RAL colours will follow.

Whilst a touch of sparkle is added with the creation of Duragrain Diamond, a detailed, natural, and colour-fast smooth finish available exclusively for the RenoMatic sectional door.  Eight modern colours including Diamond Black and Diamond Red are offered to provide a permanently beautiful and scratch-resistant finish.

The launch of Duragrain Individual Print (top image) provides the end customer with the ultimate in creativity and individuality.  Homeowners are offered the ability to print selected individual images and pictures onto the surface of the Hörmann LPU 42 sectional door, providing endless opportunities to create a totally unique garage door.

To help keep doors looking good for longer Hörmann have developed a new, high-strength protective coating.  When applied to the outside of the door the coating provides a high level of scratch and stain resistance and an added barrier against the adverse effects of the weather.

In addition, an ‘anti-graffiti’ coating is also available for application to the outside of the sectional door, as well as any glazing or design elements, which has been designed to allow the easy removal of graffiti with commercially available cleaners.

David O’Mara, Marketing Manager at Hörmann UK comments:
“Here at Hörmann we are always looking for new and creative ideas to ensure we keep up with market trends and consumer fashions.
“We are confident that these new finishes and colour options will prove popular with both dealers and end consumers alike and keep Hörmann at the forefront of innovation and choice in the garage door market.”

To find out more about Hörmann finishes and colours for sectional doors visit www.hormann.co.uk or call 01530 516868.

Who else can produce Bespoke Garage Doors like these?

Woodrite has carved a niche for itself as the go-to company for bespoke doors.

When a homeowner asks for something out of the ordinary – perhaps a special design or an unusual configuration - Woodrite is the name every Garage Door Specialist knows they turn to for a solution.

Rather than go into details, let’s allow the pictures to do the talking…

From Bespoke to Woodrite’s Cedar Somerset and Buckingham “fastman-built” ranges on a 3-4 week delivery.

At the other end of the spectrum is Woodrite’s quick turnaround solution – the panel-built door. There’s no sacrificing quality – Woodrite uses the same tried and tested joinery skills but has changed its usual description of craftsman-built to fastman-built!

The door is built as a panel and chassis mounted, to give a lead-time of 3-4 weeks, dependent on delivery cycles. The quick delivery is not limited to base-coated doors, but is available across the complete range of fully-finished woodtones from light oak to slate grey.

Contact Sharon Cleaver at Woodrite on 01280 841010 for details of those special doors or for Woodrite’s quick turnaround cedar panel-built ranges!

World’s Oldest Aston Martin Coming to Concours of Elegance During its Centenary Year

The Concours of Elegance, presented by A. Lange & Söhne, will host the oldest surviving Aston Martin during its 2021 event at Hampton Court Palace this September. Aston Martin ‘A3’ was the third car ever built by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, and was extensively driven by the founders. This year, it celebrates its centenary.

The Concours of Elegance was first established in 2012 to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with a collection of 60 of the rarest cars in the world in the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle. Since then the Concours of Elegance has evolved into a world-renowned celebration of craftsmanship, design and innovation, hosted since 2017 at Hampton Court Palace, but always with spectacular cars like the Aston Martin ‘A3’at its heart.

Given its name because it is built on chassis no.3 and uses a Type A engine, ‘A3’ produces just 11hp from its four-cylinder side-valve engine. Nevertheless, it was raced in period, and proved capable of setting speed records, achieving an average of more than 86mph over 100 miles at the Brooklands circuit.

By 1923, the car’s life as a factory prototype was complete and it was sold to a customer. It changed hands a number of times until history shows it under the ownership of R.W. Mallabar in 1927. Following a con-rod failure, the car returned to Aston Martin for an engine rebuild, at which time the car was refinished in pale grey (rather than its original black) with red wheels.

The next time ‘A3’ reappears in the history books is 2002 when it was identified at auction as the third Aston Martin ever produced. In 2003 a generous donation enabled ‘A3’ to be purchased by the Aston Martin Heritage Trust, who entrusted it to Ecurie Bertelli for a full restoration to as close as original specification.

A new body was designed and hand-beaten into shape to replace the later green body that had been added at some point in A3’s life, a new ash bodyframe was built, the engine was rebuilt, the radiator was refurbished and the chromium finish removed. The car is presented today in full working order, with its factory specification black paintwork, preserving an extremely important part of Aston Martin history.

The display of Aston Martin ‘A3’ is just the latest in a spectacular partnership between Aston Martin, particularly the Aston Martin Owner’s Club (AMOC), and the Concours of Elegance. At the inaugural event in 2012, Mark Donoghue of the AMOC arranged for sixty Aston Martins – one from each year of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign – to be lined up along Windsor Castle’s Long Walk.

Then, in 2019, Donoghue was responsible for arranging AMOC’s show-stopping display of one example of every single Aston Martin Zagato model produced, many of which are one-offs.

The ‘A3’ will form part of the Main Concours display at Concours of Elegance 2021, a line-up of the world’s rarest cars set to go on display at Concours of Elegance 2021, taking in some of the finest European coachbuilt cars ever built, a collection of Gulf and Martini-liveried motorsport heroes and the very latest bespoke hypercars.

The event will also welcome a number of special features and displays, including a celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s 95th birthday, bringing with it a British car from each year of Her Majesty’s life. In total, over 1,000 rare and exotic cars will be on display across the weekend.

Tickets to the Concours of Elegance 2021 are available now from just £30 for half-day entry, with full three-course hospitality packages from £288.

Tickets can be bought from concoursofelegance.co.uk/tickets.

ADSA Launches Landmark Apprenticeship

A landmark apprenticeship scheme to bridge a skills gap and ensure quality standards within the automatic door industry has been launched this month (March) by the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA).

The Powered Pedestrian Door Technician Apprenticeship realises more than five years of hard work – from the initial idea, active partnership working and Government green light, to devising structure and content and commissioning a suitable training provider.

ADSA Managing Director Ken Price said that this was “a landmark moment” for the industry which will serve it for years to come – delivering professional entry-level training and qualification, underpinned a consistent approach to safety and standards.

“Our members clearly identified that there was a skills shortage for entry-level technicians in our industry.
“Alongside this, there was a need for a consistent approach to ensure that those entering the profession were able to attain a high-quality standard of knowledge in theory and practice,” he said.
The two-year level two apprenticeship comprises 23 modules: six electrical and mechanical engineering, the remainder industry-specific.

Each module has been selected to ensure that all apprentices attain essential core skills. Level two Maths and English will also be provided if the apprentice does not already hold these qualifications.

ADSA initially devised an expression of interest when the Government Trailblazer Apprenticeship scheme was launched in 2015 – a move backed by industry employers.

However, it had to overcome many hurdles before being given the go-ahead. A Trailblazer working group was established which produced standard and ‘end point’ assessments.

This was followed by rounds of detailed costing submissions before course content could be developed during 2019. Work continued through 2020 despite the knock-on effects of a global pandemic and a training provider was identified.

South Staffordshire College was chosen as the delivery partner for the PPD Technician Apprenticeship with cohorts of up to 15 apprentices working towards their qualification as part of a rolling programme.

Learning will be undertaken in block release sessions at its Tamworth Campus with digital platforms replacing classroom delivery while COVID restrictions are still in place. Apprentices will also be assessed in the workplace with the endpoint assessment in installation and service being undertaken within a moot environment.

Apprentices are paid a salary by the employer during their indenture, with all learning funded through the Government’s Trailblazer Scheme. The ratio of learning is 40 per cent study 60 per cent practical.

Kirk Hookham, Deputy CEO of South Staffordshire College, added:
“We are very pleased to be working with ADSA as part of an innovative partnership to provide high-quality education and training.”
Details of the apprenticeship can now be found on the South Staffordshire College website

Employers can arrange apprenticeships direct with the college by calling 0300 456 24 24 or by emailing apprenticeship@southstaffs.ac.uk

Top image: Following in his father’s footsteps - Casey Goddard, aged 18, is among the first cohort of 11 apprentices who have embarked on the apprenticeship course. His father, Richard has his own business Goddard Electricals, and installs for major manufacturers, including FAAC.

dormakaba Launches New Features for Popular KTV Revolving Door

Leading supplier of security and entrance systems solutions, dormakaba, has upgraded its KTV Revolving Door system, which now offers improved installation times and a new automatic Night Shield.

With the dormakaba Direct Drive, the KTV Revolving Doors now feature an impressive shallow ceiling assembly of just 100mm, with an integrated LED light ring, allowing for the seamless integration with existing architecture. Thanks to the brushless motor, the doors benefit from enhanced life cycles – tested to 2 million cycles.

Plus, the new Weldless floor ring uses threaded rods instead of welded brackets, meaning the floor ring can be more easily and precisely levelled, resulting in a much quicker installation.

The upgrades also include anti-intruder protection to class RC2 as standard, so specifiers and building owners can have total peace of mind that the doors will protect against unauthorised access and vandalism.

For those with increased security requirements, the KTV is also available with an additional Night Shield option, which can be installed internally or externally, and is equipped with EN 1672 tested and certified RC2 class burglary protection.

The Night Shield is available as either a manual locking solution, or a new low-energy automatic version that reliably locks the revolving doors by means of a simple programme switch.

Rafik Pathan, Solution Sales Director at dormakaba says:
“dormakaba works across a wealth of sectors and we recognise that there is no such thing as a one size fits all solution for locking and security.
“Requirements can vary considerably across different specifications, so our KTV Revolving Doors are available in a variety of combinations - including 3 or 4 wing turnstiles, transport openings for bulky deliveries - and a range of locking devices. The Twin Brush Double Seal offers increased protection against external issues such as noise, dirt, or cold air – perfect for installation in reception areas.
“These upgrades and additional options continue to prove our commitment to excellent products and unbeatable customer service, with support available through our full-service package. This starts from site-visits and drawings, through to remote software updates and dedicated aftercare where possible, guaranteeing the best solution with one trusted supplier.”

To find out more about dormakaba’s KTV Revolving Door systems, please visit:  www.dormakaba.co.uk

dormakaba provides integrated access and security solutions customised for different building requirements from a single source of supply, installation, and maintenance.

Just Published: The Spring 2021 Issue of Door Industry Journal

Welcome to our first issue of 2021!

At last, it seems the future is looking brighter.

Certainly brighter than this time last year, when my Spring welcome message talked about our industry "facing an unprecedented situation in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic."

Back then, none of us knew how this was going to pan out and it was a frightening time. But twelve months later - despite the many challenges that remain - we are nearly out of lockdown and the vaccination programme has given us hope.

And it seems that all the restrictions have even had a positive effect on demand, as households are diverting some of the money saved by not going on holiday etc into home improvement.

This has led to a surge in demand for garage doors, whilst the explosion in internet shopping has been good news for industrial door firms, thanks to more warehousing being constructed.

The ironmongery sector has also prospered, through the massive increase in DIY sales. IronmongeryDirect reported a 75% upturn during last year's lockdown and this strong performance has continued into 2021.

Away from COVID-19, there has been much concern ahead of our departure from the EU, with many worried about the effect on cross-channel trade. But in reality - whatever your views on the wider implications of the situation - Brexit has come and gone without any significant repercussions for our industry.

And, despite everything, we have seen the launch of two new garage door manufacturing businesses in 2021, in the shape of Thermador-UK Ltd and UK Doors Midlands Limited - you can read about them on pages 68 and 42 respectively.

So, we weathered the storm!

All that remains to be said is to enjoy your Easter, have a chocolate egg or three, and - of course - enjoy this latest issue of the DIJ...

Happy reading, but before you go.....

My personal thanks, as ever, goes to all our readers, advertisers and contributors for your support in producing this 132-page issue.

On behalf of "Team DIJ", we all look forward to continuing to keep our readers engaged during 2021 and assisting companies of all sizes with their publicity requirements.

You can now reach for that egg and make plans for your Easter break at home!

Derek Hibbart
Editor, Door Industry Journal

TV’s ‘Wheeler Dealer’ Mike Brewer Protects his Prized Vehicles with Aluroll Roller Doors

The frontman of the Discovery Channel’s Wheeler Dealers series, Mike Brewer, recently upgraded his own garage with two Secureroll roller garage doors.

Leading interior and exterior renovators Garage Concepts were tasked with securing the space, which contained the car enthusiast’s collection, including a rare 1976 Porsche 912.

In a video Mike explained:
“It’s my pride and joy and I want it to be safe and secure”.

Aluroll’s Classic doors were chosen due to their multitude of security features, all of which come as standard. The doors were internally face fitted so the guides were well protected, and an anti-lift locking system and Somfy control panel with a built-in alarm added extra layers of security.

Garage Concepts’ Rob Hudson said:
“Our customers expect the highest quality finishes therefore we are very selective with the partners we choose to work with. Mike Brewer is a great testimonial to both our work and Aluroll’s products. He was also great fun to work with!”.

Follow Garage Concepts and Aluroll on Instagram at @GarageConceptsUK and @AlurollUK for the latest exciting projects and news.

Hörmann UK Launches Mobile Road Blocker

Hörmann UK will launch their new Road Blocker 1000 SF in June of this year, a vehicle blocking system involving no foundation works whilst being able to withstand impacts of a 7.5-tonne vehicle at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

New Simply Electric to spark into life at Beaulieu

Beaulieu will be starting its 2021 events season with brand new event Simply Electric on Sunday 23rd May, sparking into life with an electric-themed treat to look forward to following the easing of current restrictions.

The first of 15 Covid-secure Simply rallies planned to take place in the grounds of the National Motor Museum, Simply Electric will bring together electric cars and plug-in hybrids, electric motorcycles and e-bikes for a socially-distanced display that owners, enthusiasts and families will all love.

Enthusiasts will be at the heart of the rally, which will celebrate the past, present and future of electric motoring as owners are invited to safely park up in the Beaulieu parkland, admire each other’s machines and talk technology.

All EVs are welcome, from the latest high-performance Tesla, through cutting-edge family cars such as the Jaguar I-PACE and Audi e-tron, to the popular Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius, or even the Sinclair C5 design classic.

Maybe you’re lucky enough to own a classic car that has been converted for modern-day motoring with an electric motor? If it runs on battery power, then why not silently motor your way across the New Forest to join in and enjoy a great day out.

Enthusiasts will be in plug-in powered heaven when they head inside the newly reopened National Motor Museum, where they can see electric vehicles spanning the history of motoring, from the 1901 Columbia Electric used by Queen Alexandra in the grounds of Sandringham House to the space-age design of the Volkswagen XL1 hybrid

Other electric highlights include the ultra-efficient sun-powered 1993 Solar Flair, as well as the 1939 electric Harrods delivery van and classic 1947 Brush Pony milk float

Bike lovers will enjoy seeing the 2016 Riese and Müller Nevo Nuvinci electric bike.

All tickets must be bought in advance, with carefully-managed capacity limits in place. Rally participants, planning to take part in the show with their electric vehicle, can book their tickets with confidence thanks to Beaulieu’s Covid-19 refund policy*.

Visit www.beaulieu.co.uk/events/simply-electric for further details and to buy your participant tickets.

All other visitors should purchase normal visitor admission tickets, which will be available to buy during May at www.beaulieu.co.uk.

With plenty for all the family to do at Beaulieu, together, Simply Electric is just one of the exciting Simply rallies planned for 2021. Rescheduled are Simply Vauxhall on 17th July, Simply Audi on 1st August and Simply Aston Martin on 21st August, while coming soon are Simply Porsche on 6th June, Simply VW on 19th June and Simply Jaguar on 27th June.

Visitor and participant tickets include entrance to all that Beaulieu has to offer, including the National Motor Museum, Little Beaulieu, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, the ancestral Montagu home Palace House, Secret Army exhibition, 13th century Beaulieu Abbey and the stunning grounds and gardens.

Visit www.beaulieu.co.uk for more information.

* Book with confidence, knowing that we've got you covered with our Covid-19 refund policy. If the event is unable to take place due to Government guidance, we will happily transfer your ticket to a future event or issue you with a full refund.

New guide to conformity marking and third-party testing published by GAI and DHF

A new technical briefing has been launched to keep door hardware professionals at the forefront of changes to conformity marking.

The Guidance on conformity marking, third party testing, assessment and certification technical briefing, written by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) and the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), gives a comprehensive overview of the changes door hardware professionals must prepare for in advance of 1 January 2022.

When the UK left the EU, the UKCA mark was introduced in Great Britain to replace the CE mark. Wherever CE marking might have applied, UKCA marking is currently optional for products placed on the market in Great Britain until the end of 2021 but will be mandatory from the start of next year.

The technical briefing, originally launched in 2020, has been updated to include both UKCA and CE+UKNI marking. It is broken down into five sections covering: conformity marking; harmonised and designated standards; methodologies of testing and assessment; fire resistance assessment reports; and third-party product certification.

The guide also includes a helpful graphic showing the product marking sales territories and which form of product marking can be used in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the EU.

Douglas Masterson, technical manager of the GAI, said:
“We have written this briefing to ensure that both GAI and DHF members were clear on the differences between conformity marking, third party testing, assessment and certification, as well as what their responsibilities are going forward. We will continue to make members aware of any developments and provide as much technical support as possible to help them navigate these changes.”

Michael Skelding, General Manager at the DHF, said:
“With the current changes to conformity marking, we felt that it was important to clarify the situation to minimise any confusion. We hope that the new guide will achieve this aim, while preserving the user-friendly format of the previous edition. For those who need more detail, further advice is available from our website.”

To download the guide, visit the GAI or DHF website:

Distinction Doors Launches New Fire Door System

Distinction Doors is proud to introduce a totally new and fully compliant FD30 composite fire door system, through a new brand, fds (fire door systems).

The new system, Neuma fds has consistently proven fire resistance with 44 individual test specimens subject to 22 bi-directional fire tests, achieving an average of 45 minutes integrity.

The fire door system was independently tested to EN1634-1: 2014 by EU notified body test houses.  To address variables in test laboratories and prove consistent performance, Neuma fds experienced the same test methods across three countries and was installed in both rigid and flexible supporting wall construction.  Every fire test was filmed.

All submitted doorsets featured the same letterplates, viewers, and auto-throw lock to underpin the need for consistency in testing.   A variety of overhead door closers were also tested.

Complete Performance
Neuma fds not only demonstrates integrity against fire but also delivers on ambient smoke control (EN1634-3:2004), security (PAS24:2016), weather (BS 6375), sound insulation (Approved Document E) and thermal performance (Approved Document L).

The FD30 composite fire door system is accredited by Secured by Design (SBD), the widely respected and long-established official police security initiative with the specific aim to reduce crime and help people live more safely.  Neuma fds meets the SBD Police Preferred Specification security requirements.

Q-Mark Certification
fds insists that all stages of the supply chain up to and including doorset manufacture are third-party certified to the BM Trada Q-Mark Fire Door Manufacturer certification scheme.

The Neuma fds door blank meets the requirements of the Q-Mark Door Blank scheme to STD 047.  The fire entrance door range is stocked and distributed under Q-Mark STD 171.

It is available nationwide through a network of official fds doorset manufacturing partners, each selected by fds and audited to meet the non-mandatory requirements of Q-Mark STD 170.

Solid & Glazed Options
Customers can choose from solid or glazed leaf options, either with or without overhead glazed fanlights.  Five colours are available as standard - black, white, red, blue and anthracite grey, while any RAL colour is an optional extra.

The doorset also features a choice of low thresholds for both internal and external entrance door applications, as well as additional hardwood cill and frame extensions.  All replacement parts must be sourced through the third party approved supply chain.

Exceeding British and European Standards
Speaking about the launch of the new fire door system, Distinction Doors Technical Director, Dave Walker says:
“Our objective was to create a compliant system that is proven to consistently meet and exceed British and European standards, giving reassurance and peace of mind to all stakeholders.  I am extremely proud to say that now, after two years of development, investment and testing, we have achieved this.
“Clients can be confident that the specified product is manufactured to the highest possible standards under a controlled certification scheme.  We look forward to working with specifiers and clients to implement a robust and proven low maintenance composite fire doorset solution.”
