How Door Coordinators Ensure Double Fire Doors Close in Perfect Sequence

Allegion UK, a leading name in fire safety hardware and supplier of the Zero Z304 CE fire door coordinator, highlights the vital role of door coordinators in buildings with double fire doors. When your building relies on paired fire doors to create a strong barrier, the sequence in which those doors close is just as important as the doors themselves.

A mis-timed closing can create dangerous gaps, allowing fire and smoke to pass through the building instead of maintaining a continuous, protective seal. This is why door coordinators are essential components for ensuring safety and integrity of double fire doors.

Iain Banks, Product Marketing Manager at Allegion UK, explains: “All fire doors must be fitted with a door closer to ensure they stay closed. However, double fire doors can pose a dangerous risk if they close incorrectly and become ineffective if not fitted with an appropriate fire door coordinator. A correctly fitted fire door coordinator ensures double fire doors always close in the correct sequence, remain firmly closed, and maintain an effective barrier against fire and smoke.”

In other words, the door coordinator is the conductor of a synchronised performance, ensuring both leaves work together to form an effective barrier when every second counts.

Providing precision, performance & peace of mind

With a unique surface rebate catch, the Z304 guarantees the correct closing sequence of your double fire doors every time. Not simply an enhancement; a door coordinator is a safety-critical component designed to preserve the integrity of passive fire protection throughout the lifecycle of a building.

Robust and versatile, the Z304 door coordinator is suitable for both timber and steel fire doors. It provides specifiers, architects, and building managers with rigorous, standards-based assurance, carrying CE and UKCA marks to EN 1158:1997 and being assessed to BS EN 1634-1:2014. In a sector where compliance and performance are non-negotiable, the Z304 CE fire door coordinator offers tangible peace of mind that the product will perform as intended in real-world conditions.

Iain Banks continues: “The Z304 fire door coordinator prevents double doors from operating out of sequence, eliminates unintended gaps, and supports a building’s passive fire protection strategy. It also simplifies maintenance, reduces callouts for misaligned doors, and demonstrates a clear commitment to occupant safety and regulatory compliance.”

A dependable door coordinator is essential when double fire doors are expected to do precisely what the design intends, stopping the spread of fire and smoke in its tracks. The Zero Z304 CE fire door coordinator embodies Allegion UK’s commitment to safety, reliability, and practical performance for the most demanding commercial environments.

ADAPTED SUBARU BRZ SET COMPETES AT RACE OF REMEMBRANCE 2025

Mission Motorsport held the eleventh annual Race of Remembrance at Anglesey circuit on the weekend of November 8 & 9.

As one of the key fundraising pillars of the year, the Mission Motorsport Race of Remembrance brings together teams from across the UK and beyond to raise money for the charity, celebrate the armed forces community, and show support during the 12h endurance event.

Unique to the Race of Remembrance, all activities and track action are paused at 10:45, allowing all competitors, pit crews, marshals, staff, and supporters to come together as one in a special pitlane service of remembrance.

Subaru UK & Ireland continued its support for Mission Motorsport and the charity’s specifically modified Subaru BRZ. This particular race car has been fully adapted to enable individuals with lower limb disabilities to race against fellow competitors on an even basis, utilising the car’s hand-controlled throttle and braking system. For the 2025 Race of Remembrance, the Subaru BRZ will be driven by Mike Smith, Dom Pearson and two others, with last year’s lead driver Steve Binns acting as this year’s driver coach.

James Cameron, CEO of Mission Motorsport, said, “Motorsport has no disabled category. You modify the vehicles, through engineering, to allow drivers to compete on a level playing field with able-bodied drivers, and this is amazingly empowering. The Race of Remembrance has grown and is now in its eleventh year, and has become a true highlight on our calendar, bringing our community together on a particularly poignant weekend for us all."

Speaking at the Race of Remembrance launch event, held recently at Thruxton race circuit, Brian Wheeler, PR Manager at Subaru UK & Ireland, commented, “We are proud to continue our support for Mission Motorsport and the important work the charity undertakes. The modified Subaru BRZ is not only an excellently balanced, stable race car, but the hand controls allow the team of drivers to compete in this highly competitive field and enjoy their racing.”

Mission Motorsport has also launched a powerful community-led campaign called ‘YourRoR’, inviting motorsport fans, beneficiaries & supporters of Mission Motorsport to mark Race of Remembrance with personal challenges that raise vital funds - helping Mission Motorsport support the armed forces community.

More than a fundraising initiative, YourRoR is a heartfelt invitation to unite as a community and honour the true spirit of Race of Remembrance. Those wishing to support the cause can do so #YourRoR - JustGiving

Design to Finish: Approaching Access Control in Healthcare

The multifaceted design of modern healthcare projects demands careful coordination and a tailored approach when specifying access control systems, explains Sreeraj Manjalavil of Consort Architectural Hardware.

The healthcare infrastructure is ever evolving. Facilities are no longer single entities for one, they are sprawling ecosystems that serve a wide range of users, from medical staff and administrators to vulnerable patients, visitors and maintenance personnel. Safeguarding their safety and security, whilst providing seamless operation is a complex challenge - one frequently solved by access control.

Today’s security solutions play a central role in protecting people and mitigating risk across much of our built environment. An appropriately specified system is effective at regulating, monitoring and restricting entry and exits, and allows users to navigate an integrated network and its hardware to ensure the right access is provided to the right person at the right time.

In healthcare buildings, the use of access control expands further, whereby a system can tackle a host of unique operational challenges - significantly contributing to fire safety, ease of movement and the theft prevention of equipment, medicine and sensitive patient data, and all whilst protecting human life and preserving privacy and dignity. In doing so, access control can become the cornerstone of functionality, compliance and organisation in any healthcare environment. Though, as the complexity of projects deepen, decision makers are reminded that coordination is key.

Preparing and empowering users

Between January and March 2025, there were over 832,000 patient safety events recorded in the NHS. Whilst each of these events may not be directly linked to building security specifically, the healthcare industry is faced with a considerable number of safety incidents, which suggests greater monitoring and mitigation is needed across the board.

Patient wellbeing and security will always remain paramount in the sector, and access control often provides staff with the necessary means of retaining control without impeding care. Hospitals for example, sustain a high level of footfall across large campuses with multiple points of entry and on-site patient record systems, presenting a number of simultaneous security tests as a result. Though, unlike other public buildings, where rigid security measures are active at all times, many healthcare environments must strike a balance throughout their security framework to meet a host of one-of-a-kind demands.

With a continuous influx of patients, staff and visitors, healthcare groups are habitually required to remain accessible and inviting around the clock. At the same time, they must also be prepared to deter unwanted visitors in areas of restricted access and lock down intensive wards to ensure patients remain safe and secure under periods of monitoring. For this, the use of access credentials is critical and provides a regulated system for sensitive staff-controlled areas such as pharmacies, wards and server rooms. By applying role, zone or schedule based access, decision makers can authorise personnel seamlessly, empowering facilities to manage patient care without compromising security in the process.

When it comes to the operation of these systems, training gaps are a concern, however. Over the five years up to February 2025, numbers of NHS doctors rose by 26%, with nurses also up 25%, and this influx of new staff requires education towards the usage of access control. Modern systems may incorporate the use of keycards, biometric scanners, mobile credentials and in some cases, voice-activation, with the implementation of AI powered tools and devices set to play a more prevalent role in the future. Each system presents its own benefits and may be better suited to certain projects and areas, but without consultation and proper user education, they can instead become a barrier.

Strategy, scalability, performance

To alleviate these operational threats, early-stage planning is fundamental. Just as end-user education and training should be built into project timelines, it’s important to consider the growing need for cooperation throughout the entire supply chain of an access control project.

All too often, a lack of evidence-based decision making can hinder the specification of a scheme and its accompanying hardware, whereby choices are made without understanding long-term performance or compliance requirements. Whether approaching a new or retrofit development, ongoing communication allows experts to come together and ensure that product decisions are aligned with the buildings intended use and user base. This collaborative approach becomes even more critical when innovative solutions enter the market and new sector challenges arise.

With this in mind, trusted manufacturers will no longer simply deliver the latest access control products, but will aim to work alongside the architects, specifiers, contractors and facility managers at each stage of the building’s lifecycle to ensure touchpoints are addressed. This is crucial in modern healthcare environments, where the added layer of complexity requires tailored security measures. One area that is often neglected is scalability, for example.

As healthcare facilities manage fluctuating patient numbers and a growing level of patient data, along with new regulations, systems must be adaptable and allow for ongoing improvements and updates to the security infrastructure without the need for a complete overhaul. By adopting a scalable system that combines technology integration with ease of use, decision makers can future proof their building’s security.

In truth, access control has become more than a means of restricting access. Modern systems are more equipped than ever before to deliver environments that support care, safety and operational excellence. Nonetheless, the complexity of the healthcare industry and its buildings demands more than product innovation - it requires an industry wide commitment to collaboration, from project conception to product installation and beyond.

Reimagining Everyday Access: JDUK’s Wisniowski Side-Hinged Garage Door Collection

While much of the garage door market continues to chase automation and high-spec mechanics, one product making waves for its versatility and customer appeal is the Wisniowski side-hinged garage door - a modern rethink of a time-tested format.

Supplied by JDUK Door Systems nationwide, this range combines the familiar benefits of traditional swing-door access with a level of engineering, finish and flexibility that makes it a genuinely compelling installer choice for a wide range of projects. Whether the priority is ease of access, superior security, or straightforward installation, JDUK’s Wisniowski side-hinged models offer a balance that few alternatives can match.

A Smarter Take on Everyday Access

For homeowners, the practicality of side-hinged doors is often what sells them. Instead of opening an entire garage panel, users can open the smaller side-hinged door, making daily use simpler and faster.

But JDUK’s Wisniowski range takes that baseline convenience and elevates it. Available in both single and double-leaf configurations, with options for outward or inward opening, the doors can be tailored to suit a wide variety of layouts. In tighter driveways or properties with restricted external clearance, this kind of adaptability can be the difference between a compromise and a perfect fit.

Installation That Just Works

The benefits of this range are just as clear for the trade. With consistent sizing, robust frames and clear fixings, JDUK’s Wisniowski side-hinged doors are built to go in smoothly and perform reliably. For installers, it’s a product that reduces complications, call-backs and wasted time.

Pre-fitted with a stainless-steel Jupiter handle and anti-burglary bolts as standard, each set arrives on site with key features already in place. This is more than a time-saver. It’s an indication of how seriously the Wisniowski range is engineered from the ground up, with thought given not just to aesthetics but to the needs of the people fitting and using it every day.

Built-In Security You Can See and Feel

Security is never a secondary feature in JDUK’s Wisniowski range. These doors are equipped with multi-point locking systems that engage across multiple positions for stronger resistance to forced entry. The DoorPro 45 model features three-point locking as standard, while DoorPro 60, DoorPro 70 and DoorTherm 86 include upgraded five-point systems for enhanced protection.

Added reinforcement bolts provide structural integrity that goes beyond expectations. Paired with a high-precision Euro lock cylinder with anti-snap features, the range delivers peace of mind without relying on add-ons or expensive upgrades. Every detail has a job to do, and the result is a product that feels just as secure as it looks.

Designed to Match, Built to Last

Visually, these doors are every bit as customisable as a homeowner would expect from a premium brand. With five different panel styles to choose from; Georgian, L Ribbed, M Ribbed, S Ribbed and V Line, the range complements both modern and traditional properties. These designs also allow for visual consistency across homes already fitted with sectional or entrance doors, particularly useful for renovation projects.

Surface options include a wide range of more than 45 RAL colours, over 40 foil finishes and multiple texture types such as Woodgrain, Smooth, Sandgrain and Smoothgrain. For added light or aesthetic detail, glazing inserts can be specified, creating more dynamic elevations without compromising security or insulation.

From a build perspective, insulation plays a key role too. The doors are filled with high-density polyurethane foam, helping to stabilise interior temperatures and reduce energy loss. With added sealing around frames and thresholds, JDUK’s Wisniowski range performs well in the unpredictable UK climate - especially useful in garages used for more than just parking.

More Than Just a Door

Wisniowski side-hinged doors are proof that not every innovation has to look futuristic. Sometimes, real progress comes from refining the familiar, updating a classic concept to meet modern expectations. And in doing so, JDUK has helped create a product that tradespeople trust, and homeowners actively choose.

The range also offers a wide selection of optional enhancements, from automatic actuators and soft-close door closers to raised thresholds and additional locking points. These aren’t afterthoughts. They are functional tools for tailoring a door to each homeowner’s exact needs, enabling installers to upsell real value without added complexity.

Supported by a Supplier Who Understands the Trade

As with all products supplied by JDUK, the Wisniowski side-hinged range is backed by a trade-first approach. Installers can access brochures, price lists, samples, colour swatches and expert advice from a team that understands the realities of site work and specification.

It’s this mix of practical support, tested performance and visual appeal that continues to make the Wisniowski name stand out in a crowded sector. The doors aren’t just built to impress. They’re engineered to last.

Record UK’s Joe Greenlees Joins ADSA Executive Committee

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of Joe Greenlees, Managing Director of Record UK Ltd, to its Executive Committee — the group responsible for the association’s governance and strategic direction.

Joe succeeds Mark Ayton, who is stepping back from his ADSA role after many years’ loyal service, to manage his extended role as Record’s Regional Director of North Europe.

With more than nine years at Record UK and his promotion to Managing Director, in April this year, Joe brings a blend of operational experience, strategic insight and infectious enthusiasm for developing the next generation of industry talent.

“It’s a real privilege to join ADSA’s Executive Committee,” said Joe. “Record UK has been part of ADSA’s story from the very beginning, and I’m proud to continue that legacy. I’m passionate about supporting initiatives that promote the automatic door industry as a rewarding and professional career path - there’s a huge opportunity to attract young people and showcase what our sector has to offer.”

Joe paid tribute to his predecessor, Mark, whose guidance and leadership have shaped both Record UK and his own career...

“I’ve learned more from Mark than anyone I’ve ever worked with. He’s a fantastic leader - motivational and strong, yet understated. His style is all about empowerment and trust. He doesn’t micromanage; he encourages people to take ownership and grow. I’ve been very fortunate to take over a business in great shape, and that’s largely down to Mark’s leadership.”

Joe originally trained as a quantity surveyor and began his career began in consultancy and construction before moving into the automatic door industry which he describes as “a revelation.”

His leadership at Record UK has seen continued growth, operational excellence and a commitment to people development.

In his new role with ADSA, Joe is eager to represent the voices of those working within the sector every day: “I hear a wealth of great ideas and feedback from colleagues across the business. I hope to bring those perspectives to the table and help ADSA maintain its relevance, innovation and connection with members at every level,” he added.

Based in Glasgow, Joe lives with his partner and ten-year-old daughter. Away from work, life is firmly family-focused - including cheering from the sidelines at hockey, helping with homework, or spending time outdoors. Once a keen golfer and skier, Joe admits those pursuits have taken a back seat to family life, though his energetic Hungarian Vizsla ensures there’s still plenty of opportunity to get out and about.

Ken Price, ADSA Managing Director, welcomed the appointment: “Joe brings fresh perspective, drive and passion to the Executive Committee. Like his predecessor Mark, his leadership style is grounded in empowerment, collaboration and trust — qualities that reflect the very ethos of ADSA. His insight into business leadership and his commitment to nurturing talent will be invaluable as we continue to promote quality, safety and professionalism across the industry.”

Why a maintenance contract is critical: Are your fire curtains serviced and compliant?

When it comes to fire and smoke curtain systems, maintenance isn’t optional, it’s a legal and moral responsibility. These are not just pieces of equipment; they are life safety systems designed to protect people, buildings, and assets in the event of a fire.

Yet, far too often, systems go untested or neglected until it’s too late. That’s why A1S Group’s Maintenance Contracts are designed to remove uncertainty and ensure every system continues to perform exactly as designed; every time!

Guaranteed Piece of Mind

Under the UK’s Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person (whether a facilities manager, employer, or building owner) must ensure all fire safety systems are regularly inspected and maintained by competent professionals.

Fire and smoke curtains fall under this legislation and must be serviced at least every six months in accordance with BS 8524 and BS EN 12101. Failure to comply can lead to fines, prosecution, or, in the worst cases, catastrophic loss of life and invalidated insurance.

A maintenance contract with A1S Group provides complete peace of mind that these legal obligations are consistently met. Every visit includes certified testing, inspection, and full documentation, ensuring compliance is effortless and traceable.
The Hidden Cost of Neglect

A single unplanned failure can disrupt operations, delay projects, or compromise evacuation routes. Reactive repairs are not only more expensive but can also expose building owners to regulatory risk.

Through preventative maintenance, A1S identifies potential issues early, reducing the risk of costly downtime and keeping systems in optimal condition. This approach doesn’t just save money, it safeguards reputations and lives.

Why Choose A1S Group?

For over 37 years, A1S Group has been a trusted name in fire and smoke curtain manufacturing, installation, and servicing. Their service and maintenance clients benefit from:

Technical Expertise
The A1S service team includes engineers trained to handle complex and bespoke systems beyond the industry norm.

Nationwide Coverage
Operating across the UK, A1S offers responsive, professional support wherever it’s needed.

Experience in Live Environments
Skilled engineers perform maintenance safely and efficiently; even in occupied buildings, with minimal disruption.

Effortless Compliance

With a maintenance contract in place, you’re not just scheduling a service, you’re partnering with the original manufacturer. That means only A1S-certified engineers using genuine fire-rated components will handle your systems.

Every inspection includes detailed reporting, certification, and ongoing support to ensure your systems remain fully compliant and ready for any emergency.

RALLIES, RACES, RESTORATIONS AND REMARKABLE SKILLS

The Royal Automobile Club is preparing to celebrate the stars of Britain’s historic motoring and motorsport worlds at its seventh annual Historic Awards. And the winners will finally be revealed at a glittering celebration in Pall Mall, London on Thursday, 20 November.

These Awards are important accolades for Britain’s thriving historic car industry in its widest sense and are overseen by independent specialist judges.

Each judge is chosen for their knowledge and experience in their particular award category. Now they have done their expert work for 2025, scrutinising the long list of very strong nominations which were received this year. After much debate and reflection, the finalists have now been chosen; all the judges now have to do is to whittle those shortlists down to the eventual winners!

“The Club has been recognising achievement for over 125 years, and these Awards continue that proud tradition by celebrating the hidden talents within the historic vehicle scene,” said Jeremy Vaughan, Head of Motoring for the Royal Automobile Club. “There’s so much inspiring work taking place, and we’re here to celebrate — and reward — the most inspirational people.

“We do this, of course, by bringing everyone together in London for a very special evening. But we also engage a remarkable team of independent judges to help us identify the leading candidates and assess the finalists. It’s quite a process, but this kind of event is the lifeblood of the Club — it builds on our unique heritage of recognising and supporting British achievement.”

The judging process

While in most categories the rigorous judging process takes place at a desk, for some of the categories it's a little more hands-on. The Restoration jury members are currently preparing for a day at Bicester Motion, at which they will examine all three finalists in great detail, quizzing the restorers and owners before choosing their winner. Meanwhile, the Museums & Collections panel are hitting the road to visit the three finalist institutions before picking their winner.

This year’s Lead Judges are Sarah Bennett-Baggs (Editor, Auto Addicts and an active historic motorsport competitor), Alastair Clements (Editor-in-Chief, Classic & Sports Car), Steve Cropley (Editor-in-Chief, Autocar), Vanessa Marçais (historic motorsport organiser), Lizzie Pope (Associate Editor, Classic & Sports Car), Simon Taylor (journalist, author, former publisher, motor racing commentator and car collector), Ian Titchmarsh (motorsport commentator and Trustee of Silverstone Heritage) and Allan Winn (director and former CEO of Brooklands Museum).

A new report analyses the evolution of digital access control – and looks to the future

The 2025 edition of ASSA ABLOY’s Wireless Access Control Report reveals a maturing market where digital and mobile solutions are becoming the norm...

Over 12 years of tracking, surveying and analysing digital access trends, the Report has documented strong momentum behind wireless adoption, sustainability, and cloud services. Future focus turns to intelligent integrations and to demonstrating ROI to cement access control's role in a new generation of smart, secure, and energy-efficient buildings.

For the first time, ASSA ABLOY’s industry survey commissioned for the Report finds that wireless (fully or partly) systems have overtaken wired-only deployments among those who manage access digitally.

“We are happy to share our biennial market research into the digitalization of access, which is steadily becoming a wireless-first technology,” says Richard Sharp, VP & Head of Product Unit Wireless Locks, DAS at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA. “Once again, we hope this report is useful for security strategy and keeps non-specialist decision-makers up to date with what’s happening in digital access– and more importantly, what’s ahead.”

Key issues: sustainability, mobile, cyber–physical resilience and more

For many respondents to the survey, sustainability has gone beyond ‘merely’ a consideration: for 27% of respondents, it is now the top factor when considering an investment to extend access management reach or capability.

“Across multiple and diverse sectors, sustainability is moving from a supporting role to a strategic driver,” says Richard Sharp. “Wireless systems, which reduce the need for cabling and complex infrastructure, are often seen as an ‘energy-efficient’ alternative.”

The previous edition of the biennial Report found significant knowledge gaps between physical and cyber security professionals. Presented with four important regional laws and directives which are (or soon will be) critical to cyber and physical security, 55% of survey respondents did not recognize any.

“The situation has improved two years on, although the new Report does identify some remaining issues,” says Richard Sharp.

The vast majority of 2025 survey respondents (84%) felt their organization was either already compliant, or in the process of ensuring compliance, or that these regulations were not relevant to their situation.

“With NIS2 coming into force and obligations under the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act fast approaching, this remains an area where customers and manufacturers must continue close cooperation,” he adds.

Adoption of mobile credentials – and mobile access management in general – has boomed, as widely forecasted. The 2025 survey indicates just over a quarter of respondent organizations are making plans for a future mobile deployment (26% in 2025 versus 39% of respondents in 2023). Fully mobile credential environments now account for 17% of all deployments – more than triple the rate seen in the last edition of ASSA ABLOY’s report, in 2023.

“Early adopters have already transitioned: mobile digital access is for the now, not just something for the future,” says Richard Sharp. “These organizations are already experiencing the operational agility, convenience, security and sustainability benefits of mobile access. Mobile digital access is embedded.”

The Wireless Access Control Report 2025 also includes data and exclusive expert analysis on cloud/ACaaS solutions, the rise of biometrics, and more.

Enjoy your garden, whatever the season

Stay dry, whatever the weather... When the rain arrives, there are plenty of ways to stay dry and enjoy your garden. On the terrace, the bioclimatic pergola proves its worth.

Its aluminium slats can be fully closed at the first drop of rain, forming a watertight roof. Rainwater is then discreetly channelled away through the posts, allowing you to continue dining or reading in comfort.

Say goodbye to dashing through the rain between your car and the front door! Installing a porch or awning keeps you dry while you find your keys and unlock the door. It’s a simple addition that offers everyday comfort while enhancing the appearance and value of your home’s façade.

Ready for whatever the sky brings

When hail strikes, damaging car bodywork in just minutes, a carport offers reliable protection. Its robust structure, paired with an insulated roof of extruded polystyrene panels, is designed to withstand heavy impacts and bear significant snow loads. Your car or motorhome stays perfectly safe.

In addition to the main shelter, many models also include a secure storage area, ideal for keeping valuables such as bicycles, lawnmowers, or tools protected from the weather and theft.

Beat the heat in style

A bioclimatic pergola is your best ally when temperatures soar. Its secret lies in adjustable aluminium louvres, which can tilt up to 160°. In a semi-open position, they create a naturally refreshing airflow. Warm air rises and escapes through the slats, while cooler air circulates underneath.

This phenomenon, known as the Venturi effect, creates a pleasant microclimate on your terrace, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors comfortably, even in hot weather.

When fully closed, the louvres provide complete shade, efficiently blocking the sun’s rays and keeping your outdoor living area, and even your home interior, cool and comfortable.

Creating a shelter from the wind

To make the most of your terrace even when the wind picks up, a privacy screen (known in French as claustra) is a smart addition. It creates a sheltered, cosy space where you can dine, read, and relax in peace.

Models or designs with open-worked or louvered slats are recommended in exposed areas. An open-worked claustra diffuses the airflow, acting as a natural filter.

For extra protection, pergolas can be partially closed with blinds, aluminium, or laser-cut panels, offering a sheltered outdoor welcoming space.
