Magenta Security Support 1,200 Meals for Children

Magenta Security has stepped up to provide 1,200 meals for children across Birmingham in the wake of the challenges faced by many during the half term holiday.

Working with local organisations, Magenta will provide the 1,200 meals to those children most in need of ongoing support and at risk of hunger this week.
“Children should not be punished for situations beyond their control,” comments Abbey Petkar, managing director of Magenta Security Services.
“I am not interested in the politics or the debate, just the need to help those who are vulnerable and facing challenges.  Children have always been at the forefront of Magenta’s community and charity efforts and I am delighted to be in a position to provide immediate support through this initiative, whilst being on standby to help further in the future if necessary.”

The provision of the meals during half term represents further support for children by Magenta Security who already sponsor 25 children around the world, from war-torn and deprived locations, from the age of four to 16.

Throughout the whole of those young and formative 12 years of their life, Magenta provides full funding for the child’s education, health and welfare needs.  Effectively this mean Magenta has supported 300 years of childhood education and welfare.

Magenta are also…

  • Assisting a charity that provides community clubs in Great Britain to combat knife crime and get children and teenagers off the streets.
  • Supporting schools in India and Africa by giving funding for teachers and materials for lessons.
  • Helping the community by sponsoring local sports teams and working with the Metropolitan Police to support health and safety, knife crime and bullying initiatives.
  • Providing funding for a school for blind children in India.

New guides launched to help ironmongery professionals navigate current industry issues

Three new guides published earlier this month to make those involved with specifying architectural ironmongery aware of the additional hardware considerations that are needed for projects with additional hygiene, sustainability and connectivity requirements.

The new guides have been launched by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) to ensure that anyone involved in the specification of architectural ironmongery has access to the latest best practice advice and is working in line with current standards.

Based on the RIBA-approved CPD presentations created by the GAI, each guide contains comprehensive product information, diagrams and detail on the relevant building regulations and industry standards. All of the guides are available to download free of charge from the GAI website.

The ‘Ironmongery specification in a post-pandemic world’ specifier’s guide outlines the different types of hardware that can be introduced into buildings to help minimise contact with surfaces without compromising safety or security.

It provides details on specialist closing devices, door automation, access control and anti-microbial devices. It also looks at ancillary products that may be used in more specific areas, such as washrooms, and things to be aware of when retrofitting hardware.

Douglas Masterson, technical manager at the GAI, said:
“In a very short space of time, the buildings that we live, work and socialise in have changed dramatically. Even before the pandemic, emphasis on a more sustainable supply chain and advances in technology have transformed the way we enter and move around buildings.
“Architectural ironmongery professionals need to keep up to date with the latest guidance and continue to be responsive to wider changes to ensure that the door and window hardware being chosen for a project will provide building users with safe and accessible routes through a building.”

New hardware innovations for smart homes and smart buildings are the focus of the ‘Ironmongery and the impact of the Internet of Things’ specifier’s guide.

It looks at how the rise of interrelated technology is affecting the ironmongery industry, including various smart locking and access control products. The guide includes details on building information modelling (BIM) and how it can benefit projects, as well as the relevant standards that apply to the Internet of Things (IoT), including the BSI Kitemark Scheme for IoT devices that launched in May 2018.

It also covers the integration of these smart products with building management systems, as well as the potential impact of future trends in technology and legislation.

The ‘Ironmongery and the impact of the environment’ specifier’s guide is designed to highlight the environmental impact of construction products, including door hardware. It covers how architectural ironmongers can help to reduce carbon emissions from buildings as well as how they can change their own processes to reduce their effect on the environment.

It covers industry initiatives and programmes including the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) activities, building certification schemes such as BREEAM and LEED, as well as ISO 14001 and other relevant environmental standards. It also discusses the role of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and how these relate to architectural ironmongery specifically.

The GAI now has eight Specifier’s Guides in total covering fire and escape doors, specialist applications, accessibility, security and access control.

To download the guides for free, visit www.gai.org.uk

iLOQ delivers its 1000th iLOQ S5 Digital Locking System

iLOQ’s mission is to transform mechanical locks into digital and mobile access management.

At the end of 2019, the company took advantage of the opportunities offered by digitalization and the Internet of Things and built on the knowledge gained from the introduction, 15 years ago, of the ground-breaking iLOQ S10 to release the revolutionary iLOQ S5.

iLOQ S5 offers a range of unique features that provide even more added value to its users. Like all iLOQ’s environmentally friendly solutions, the S5 is battery-free. A major new development, unseen before in the locking industry, is that it enables device-to-device communication.

This advanced feature allows a vast amount of data to be remotely updated and then shared between readers, keys and locks in a building. Information, such as access rights, time limitations, a list of blocked keys and audit trails, is quickly shared between the devices before the door is unlocked.

With no need for additional wiring, iLOQ S5’s standard, open application programming interface (API) allows integration with modern information-sharing and booking systems.

This next-generation innovation brings high data security and unparalleled access management, along with competitive lifecycle costs and significant savings, to building owners, users and key holders. And, less than a year after its introduction to the market, the 1000th iLOQ S5 system has already been delivered.

“iLOQ is continually striving to bring innovations to the locking industry that maximize security, minimize administration time and impact on the environment, drive down lifecycle costs and boost the value of properties. The iLOQ S5 is another demonstration of how we are leading the way in the locking industry and motivated to make life accessible for businesses and users alike,” states iLOQ President and CEO, Heikki Hiltunen.

iLOQ in brief

iLOQ is a rapidly growing Finnish company that is leading the technological revolution in the digital locking industry. iLOQ transforms mechanical locks into digital and mobile access management.

iLOQ solutions are based on technologies developed and patented by the company, enabling electronic and mobile locking without batteries or cables.

iLOQ replaces mechanical and electromechanical locking systems with environmentally friendly solutions that solve the problems of lost or copied keys, reduce lock maintenance and minimize lifecycle costs.

The Handle of Excellence – A History of Hoppe

Ged Ryan, Chief Executive of HOPPE (UK)

HOPPE prides itself on being a brand that communicates quality with just one touch. Ged Ryan, CEO of HOPPE (UK), looks back at the company’s journey to becoming the trusted brand the UK door and window industry knows today.

HOPPE (UK) has been established in the UK for over 30 years but benefits from almost 70 years’ experience in the architectural ironmongery sector gained in many other countries across the world.

The HOPPE Group was founded in Germany by Friedrich Hoppe in 1952. HOPPE (UK) was primarily set up to distribute HOPPE handles but when Charter Hardware was acquired in 1997, the HOPPE (UK) offering was extended to include associated door hardware. That’s when the ARRONE brand was born.
HOPPE (UK) today

Our relationships with employees, customers and suppliers are based on mutual trust. By creating a working environment where people feel valued, we’re building a team that genuinely wants to do well for the company and its customers.

We want all our people to be able to help all our customers. We make a huge investment in training to make sure staff are multiskilled, including helping staff achieve the widely respected qualifications from the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers and continuously updating their knowledge via CPD.

Nearly a third of the UK team has been with the business for over 10 years, with two staff achieving their 25 years’ service award this year. The loyalty of the HOPPE (UK) team is at the heart of our success.

We sit down with our customers throughout the year to review how our partnership is working and make sure that every order is receiving the highest level of care and attention. Based on the feedback we get, we’re achieving that.

HOPPE eHandle HandsFree
Products and innovation

HOPPE (UK) and ARRONE have dedicated teams who look at the needs of the market and develop our product offering in line with demand.

Our aim is to add value to the supply chain by ensuring we are providing a comprehensive package of useful products at an appropriate range of price points, complete with the right technical attributes and testing. We want customers to know that when they fit HOPPE and ARRONE hardware, that the product will deliver as promised. Ultimately, we want them to be confident they can trust our brands.

This year, HOPPE has launched the eHandle HandsFree, eHandle AutoLock for windows, and eHandle ConnectHome to offer homeowners a more secure, practical solution for external doors and windows. It builds on HOPPE’s existing range of mechatronic hardware for smart homes and smart buildings, including the FingerScan, HandsFree and SecuSignal eHandles.

All HOPPE and ARRONE products are fully tested to legal requirements, as would be expected, but are also checked by third party certification bodies such as Certifire and Certisecure. We also test relevant security products to standards recommended by Secured by Design: Annex A of PAS24:2016 and TS007. This is part of HOPPE’s commitment to creating high quality products that deliver customers the best value long term.

New weather shield adds dual protection to Codelocks products

Codelocks releases PINGuardTM by Codelocks, a weather shield designed to improve weather resistance and provide extra security for its mechanical and electronic locks.

Made from a flexible polymer material, PINGuardTM by Codelocks protects the lock from rain and shields the keypad from view.

PINGuardTM by Codelocks fits behind the lock, improving the gasket seal and preventing water ingress. It has the added benefit of improving security, as the cowl keeps the keypad hidden when a code is being entered.

Colin Campbell, Managing Director at Codelocks said:
“Our new PINGuardTM product is ideal for outdoor applications such as gates, sheds and outbuildings. Adding PINGuardTM to a new or existing lock extends the life of the lock by protecting it from rain exposure and sub-zero temperatures.
“It’s designed to shield your code from prying eyes, as well as protecting the lock from harsh weather – so it is especially useful for construction sites or entry gates to the workplace, where you need to enter your code in a public place.”

PINGuardTM by Codelocks is suitable for both new and existing lock installations. There are two products in the PINGuardTM by Codelocks range: the XT1 and the XT2.

The XT1 is compatible with Codelocks’ CL100 and CL200 mechanical lock range and the electronic CL2000 range. Codelocks’ mechanical locks offer ease of use and are ideal for situations where a single, changeable code is required. The CL2000 electronic lock range can be easily programmed on the door and are an upgrade from a mechanical lock with added features and benefits.

The larger XT2 PINGuardTM by Codelocks is suitable for the CL500 mechanical lock range, which are heavy duty keyless locks designed for use on primary doors. Combining the XT2 with one of the locks in the CL500 range offers an extra layer of security for your business or residential property.

Hands-free solutions to help limit the spread of Covid-19

With the outbreak of Covid-19, reducing touchpoints wherever possible throughout a building is front of mind for many businesses, building owners and facilities managers.

Fortunately, there are a range of hands-free door opening solutions – available to suit all budgets and needs – that can help minimise the spread of infection, says the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group.

Doors and their hardware are the first and last touchpoints when entering or exiting a building, or when moving between different rooms. However, there are options available that can either limit the amount of direct contact with ironmongery and doors or offer an anti-bacterial solution.

Eryl Jones, Managing Director at the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group, comments:

“Doors are the one item we all touch every day; a physical barrier to keep us secure and safe. But with the increased risk that touching a door now poses, what can we do to overcome this challenge?

“When looking to limit the spread of infection from doors and kill germs, the first place to start is to make sure existing door hardware is being cleaned properly. As one of the most commonly touched surfaces in a building, it is vital that a regular cleaning routine is established. First, hardware should be cleaned with a mild, non-abrasive anti-bacterial detergent and water solution, using a soft cloth. Then, using water and a soft cloth only, surfaces should be wiped to remove any remaining detergent residue. The treated surface should appear visibly wet then allowed to air dry.

“Further advice on how to clean door hardware properly can be found on our website at www.assaabloyopeningsolutions.co.uk.

“For those seeking a more secure solution in areas with high traffic, decision makers might want to consider products that allow doors to be opened without a person having to use their hands. For instance, arm and foot pulls are an easy and cost-effective door furniture solution that limits the level of contact an individual has with a door.

“Alternatively, sites might want to think about products that feature anti-microbial surfaces. Hardware treated in this way, or that use materials such as copper, can effectively reduce the risk of transmission. To meet this need, UNION has launched GripSafe, an anti-viral copper door handle tape that simply wraps around a clean door handle and has been proven to inactivate 99.98 per cent of corona viruses. This offers a simple solution that can make a big difference.

“The next step up would be to look at hold-open door controls, which can help keep doors open at all times, except in the case of an emergency. For instance, ASSA ABLOY offers its DC300G-HF door closer, which holds doors open in medium to high traffic corridors, allowing people to pass through without touching the doors. Meeting the demands of BS 8300:2018-2 for inclusive design, it offers unrivalled performance when compared with other door closers on the market. UNION also offers DoorSense, a safe and legal means of keeping fire doors open, but which enables a fire door to close automatically in the event of an alarm.

“For those after a completely hands-free solution, there are a range of access control devices that simply require the wave of a hand to open. These are fitted with motion-sensing technology, and ideally suited to sensitive applications such as bathrooms, and environments such as hospitals, laboratories and schools.

“Finally, there’s also the option of access control solutions that use personalised keys. Sharing keys between personnel can quickly increase the spread of bacteria and germs. An access control system that employs individual keys puts a stop to this, while simplifying key management throughout a site and saving personnel valuable time and money. Solutions such as ASSA CLIQ® Remote, which is a mechatronic locking system that assigns access rights to a key, allows users to have their own personalised keys for all doors and eliminates the need to share keys. This reduces the risk of bacteria and germs spreading.

“By taking these steps and considering the door hardware options available to them, decision makers can help make sure our buildings mitigate the risk of germs and stop the spread of infections, ensuring everyone feels as safe and comfortable as possible in these spaces.”

Find out more about how the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group can help by visiting www.assaabloyopeningsolutions.co.uk

Clock change cancellation could save UK economy £160m a year

Based on previous Government estimates that 80 lives a year could be saved by scrapping the October clock change, the UK could reduce the number of people killed on our roads by four and a half per cent and save the economy £160m.

This is what the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart says, who is calling on the Government to stop the practice. The charity believes that moving to a permanent daylight-saving system would significantly improve road safety, especially for vulnerable road users such as children, pedestrians and cyclists.

Neil Greig, Policy and Research Director at IAM RoadSmart commented:
“Every year there are unnecessary victims of road collisions throughout the winter months during commutes to work or school which could easily be avoided if the Government scrapped the process of changing the clocks.
“Young pedestrians under 15 are already a huge ‘at risk’ group for road safety, and that risk becomes even greater as the nights draw in.
“Stopping the change of clocks would be easy to implement and, without question, would save lives – there are no good road safety reasons why this isn’t happening. The UK should at least set up a two-year trial to prove the benefits once and for all.”
Indeed, in November and December 2019, the number of pedestrian and cyclist deaths and injuries rose by 344 (from 6,787 to 7,131 representing a five per cent increase) compared with the two months prior to the clock change.

Well-established figures prove that casualty rates rise between 3pm and 7pm as the days shorten. IAM RoadSmart warns that the dark afternoons are an especially dangerous time for youngsters coming home, with less supervision and individuals heading off to different activities at different times during this key period.

To facilitate the improvement, IAM RoadSmart recommended earlier this year that to allow extra daylight in the afternoons, we should not put the clocks back this winter, then next March move one hour ahead – and then go back one hour in October 2021 – a so called ‘double British summer time’.
Neil concluded: “Clearly it is now unfortunately too late to do anything ahead of this weekend, but we urge the Government to reconsider its policy ahead of next March. Road safety is now about small incremental gains from a number of policy changes and daylight saving could play its part in helping break the current flat lining in road deaths we are seeing in this country.”
In 1968, the UK Government carried out a three-year experiment which saw the clocks not being put back from March until October 1971, essentially staying in summer time for three years. Throughout the experiment figures were collected at peak times which revealed that around 2,500 fewer people were killed or injured during the winters where the clocks weren’t put back, this represented a reduction of nearly 12 per cent.

MTL™300: Mul-T-Lock’s high-security, patented locking solution

Security specialist Mul-T-Lock has launched MTL™300, a high-security yet affordable locking solution for both residential and small-to-medium business customers.

The new cylinder platform is based on field-proven technology that enables it to be patented from day one, all the way through to 2033. As MTL™300 is based on existing technology, it also saves locksmiths expenses traditionally associated with launching new-patented platforms.

Ideal for residential and small-to-medium business customers, MTL™300 is an entry-level locking solution that goes beyond the standard, offering advanced, patented technology and protection that complies with international standards.

A restricted key copy system enables locksmiths to access exclusive keying profiles using six different special cut types while guaranteeing protection against unauthorised key duplication.

MTL™300’s Master Key Systems (MKS) are supported by "Masterpiece" software, so locksmiths can plan and assemble their own MKS and continue to use the same key cutting machines and pinning kits as with Integrator®.

The combined use of the patented key and key blank, together with the Mul-T-Lock key cutting control system, provides locksmiths with advanced key copy protection, promoting security and trust.

Roy Zadikov, Director of Product Management for Mul-T-Lock says:
“Like Integrator®, MTL™300 aims to satisfy the needs of consumers and small-to-medium businesses, providing convenience and efficiency, while integrating new and more innovative products and capabilities.
“Many of our locksmith customers have been crying out for a high-security, patented locking system developed by a worldwide leader, marketed at an affordable price, and this is what we’re offering with MTL™300.”

SWA member helps to create Spectacular Visuals for Private Pool and Gym Building

When Mr & Mrs Braithwaite envisioned the plans for this brand-new private swimming pool and gym building, Steel Window Association member, Cotswold Casements was called on to supply the steel windows and doors.

Cotswold Casements is an expert in the field of the repair, refurbishment, replacement and installation of steel windows and doors. This enviable reputation is endorsed by the final result of this truly captivating building and the appealing aesthetic created with its impressive fenestration.

The project was overseen by Adrian Aldred from Building Design; Cotswold Casements supplied and installed new small paned windows and doors, the arched door and window areas having been incorporated within the design.

The project took around six months - from the initial quotation and design stages to the finished installation. The final effect has been achieved by implementing five sets of double doors, a single door and several large fixed screens.

The windows and doors were manufactured with a W20 suite of sections and a black polyester paint finish. The versatile W20 portfolio remains a popular choice owing to its records of impressive durability.

The windows and doors were also glazed with toughened sealed units secured with a bead system, for longevity, hardiness and practicality. Steel window and door frames are a popular choice not just for the looks but also for the inherent strength of the frame which will now add a robust layer of security to the building.

Trevor Woskett from Cotswold Casement’s has complimented the appealing design of the building which made the incorporation of the steel frames an appealing process.

The combination of the chosen bricks, the slate roofing and the black colour of the windows and doors creates a visually striking end result.

The colour contrast is complemented even further by the spectacular size of the windows which fully capitalise on natural light. It is easy to see why Cotswold Casement’s has heralded the project as ‘one of those that stays with you’.

DHF receives ASSURED ADVICE on Powered Garage Door Safety

For many years, DHF (Door & Hardware Federation), has been advising the garage door industry on the interpretation of the standards for garage door safety and the legislation surrounding their use.

A key part of the safety message, relating to the use of ‘hold-to-run’ by remote control, has proved to be controversial, with some manufacturers and installers choosing to interpret the requirements in different ways.

Having referred the matter to its Primary Authority partner, Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards, DHF has now received ‘assured advice’ for manufacturers and installers of garage doors, thereby giving the industry a clear, detailed and officially sanctioned interpretation.

Provided that traders follow the advice correctly, they can be assured that local Trading Standards Officers will have to take account of this and not seek to apply the law in a different way.  It is also clear from the advice that some existing interpretations do not comply with the law.

The European standard allows three ways of preventing a closing door from injuring a person:

  • Firstly, all contact can be prevented by using technology (such as scanners or light curtains) to detect an obstruction in the door’s path and enable the door to stop and reverse.  (This is not achievable with a single beam fixed at low level).

  • Secondly, doors can be made pressure-sensitive by equipping them with a ‘sensitive edge’, or by using a ‘drive system’ which detects contact with obstacles; in either case, the door stops automatically, reversing as soon as contact with an obstacle is made.

  • Thirdly, the user operates the door using a ‘hold to run’ via a control located close to, and in sight of, the door.  The user must maintain constant pressure on the switch to operate the door; releasing the switch will immediately stop the door in the event of danger.  However, the ‘hold-to-run’ control device in use must be designed such that it is only possible to operate it in direct sight of the door.

In the past, the third option has often been misunderstood and ‘hold-to-run’ control that could be operated out of sight of the door has been supplied in some cases.  The new advice provides clarity on this point, stating that relying on such a control system to provide safety by ‘hold-to-run’ is contrary to the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and the Construction Products Regulations 2013.

“Local authority trading standards departments are responsible for the enforcement of the Construction Products Regulations, and also share responsibility for enforcing the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations where machinery for domestic use is concerned,” said General Manager and Secretary of DHF, Michael Skelding.
“We hope that this new assured advice from our Primary Authority partner will remove any possible doubt as to the true legal position and, thereby, make a significant contribution to safety.”

Lotus stuns Goodwood SpeedWeek with Evija dynamic public debut

The all-electric Lotus Evija hypercar makes its dynamic public debut at Goodwood SpeedWeek this weekend. The Evija will be in action on the historic race track and will be taking part in a variety of high-octane activities, including the Supercar Run.

Three pre-production examples of the Evija are supporting SpeedWeek, one complete in a vibrant Lotus ‘Solaris Yellow’ finish and two prototypes wrapped in stunning black and gold, recalling iconic Lotus liveries of the past.

The prototypes also feature a stylised image of the famous West Sussex circuit, accompanied by the words ‘Lotus x Goodwood: Creating History since 1948’ – acknowledging the year of the very first Lotus car and the first motorsport event at Goodwood.

Among the first outside of the engineering team to experience Evija is Lord March (Charlie, 25, son of the event host, the Duke of Richmond), who commented:
“The Evija is unbelievable – the power, the speed, I’ve never experienced anything like it – it was exceptional. This new dawn of electric hypercars brings ultimate motoring to life for a new generation and a younger audience. The advancement in electric cars over the last 10 years is astonishing.
“There is a huge amount of growth potential for these machines to continue allowing us to keep enjoying and driving high performance cars. Lotus continues to appeal to both the inner driver and the inner child in all of us – so much fun, and ultimately for the driver to control and enjoy.”

Gavan Kershaw, Director of Vehicle Attributes, Lotus, added:
“We’re having a great time demonstrating the Evija here at Goodwood. Bringing the cars to an event like this is a welcome break from the hundreds of hours spent on proving grounds, where there’s a huge amount of open space and long straights to test the car’s performance limits.
“Goodwood is a fast and flowing circuit with numerous undulations in the surface, and so is a fantastic test and demonstration for the Evija as it’s the type of environment where many owners will use the car.”

He added: “We hope the TV coverage of the event will show people what an amazing vehicle it is, and we can’t wait to be back next year.”

Car fans can see the Lotus Evija on the ITV network, with multiple programmes on different channels across the weekend. See local TV listings for full details.

Lotus has also published a new US LOT Blog on the Evija, hosted on the Lotus media website here. It details how elements of the Evija have been consciously designed to meet the exacting standards of company founder Colin Chapman, and how that helps make the car a true Lotus.

More than 50 historic Lotus cars are scheduled to take part in Goodwood SpeedWeek. They include:
  • Lotus 25 – the car driven by Jim Clark car during the 1963 F1 season when he won the Drivers’ Championship
  • Lotus 18 – the car in which Sir Stirling Moss won the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix
  • Lotus 49 – the car in which Graham Hill won the Monaco Grands Prix in 1968 and 1969
  • Lotus 72-5 – Emerson Fittipaldi’s car from the 1970 season
  • Lotus 72-7 – Emerson Fittipaldi’s main car from the 1972-73 seasons, and the car in which he won the most F1 races – five in total
  • Lotus 79 – Mario Andretti’s main car from the 1978 season
