Garador supplies garage doors to Duchy of Cornwall’s Poundbury development

Working in partnership with leading housebuilder, CG Fry & Son, Garador have supplied and installed over 1500 timber garage doors to an iconic development in Dorset.

The Poundbury development has been built on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, HRH The Prince of Wales, incorporating the principles of architecture and urban planning as put forward in his book ‘A Vision of Britain.’ Work originally began at Poundbury back in October 1993 and the site has gradually been expanded in phases. It is anticipated that the final phase will reach completion by the year 2025.

Senior buyer at CG Fry & Son, Andrew Smith commented:
“We’ve built close to 1,000 homes at the Poundbury development thus far, with a variety of detached and semi-detached buildings with garages to suit.”

CG Fry & Son specified Garador’s very popular Vertical Cedar timber up & over garage doors, throughout various areas of the Poundbury development. The Vertical Cedar up & over garage door is constructed around a galvanised steel box section chassis, with a timber infill of solid red cedar boards. The box section chassis gives the door a strong boundary and when combined with two back braces across the back of the door, helps to make it strong and rigid.

Solid red cedar is a great hardwood for external building products where humidity, temperature, and cracking are a common problem. Most of the trees grow in the Pacific Northwest where the weather is predominantly damp, and so they have developed self-protective qualities which protect against temperature related stresses.

Andrew continues:
“We’ve been delighted with the quality of the timber garage doors Garador has provided. The design of the garage doors mean they will last well and their appearance is in-keeping with the aesthetics of the development.”

The really great thing about the development is how they have planned the layout of the settlement for a mixture of residential and commercial properties, so most amenities are within walking distance, thereby overcoming the trend towards isolated housing estates and out-of-town shopping centres that has been commonplace over the last 30 years.

As a result of its mixed use, you will see a variety of integral garages across the site, often with beautiful sandstone brickwork, red brickwork or rendered white walls. The Vertical Cedar up & over garage doors have been painted in a collection of classic colours, such as Chartwell Green, Moss Green, Pigeon Blue and Anthracite Grey, to reflect the local character and beauty of the surrounding area. In addition, the Vertical Cedar wood doors can be stained and painted and will not lose their beautiful grained appearance.

Garador’s Managing Director, Neil Discombe commented:
“We were really pleased to work with our longstanding partner, CG Fry & Sons, on the Poundbury development in Dorset. It was a privilege to work with a developer committed to high standards in terms of the quality of the products they fit and the finished work they produce. The end results really speak for themselves with a selection of garage doors which perfectly complement all of the different buildings.”
