Criminals never stand still – so nor should security. Instead, we should be constantly evolving to meet the challenge of new attack methods, ensuring our buildings remain safe against the burglars not of yesterday, but today.
That’s what PAS 24:2022+A12024 is all about; outlining the minimum performance requirements for doors and windows, keeping pace with a changing security landscape, aiming to reflect modern burglary methods and reduce the gap between laboratory testing and real-world performance…
Keeping up with the criminals
The new UK security standard superseding PAS 24:2022 and PAS 24:2016, PAS 24:2022+A12024 is essentially a more current and consistent testing apparatus for doorsets and windows in homes.
Many of the updates are about keeping pace with modern burglary methods to ensure testing reflects how burglars actually attack doors and windows today.
As such, front doors, patio/sliding doors, French doors, folding doors, and most residential windows are now physically tested against things like superglue, freezing spray, and water, as well as the more established methods of forced entry, levering, impact attacks, and manipulation of locks and hardware.
In addition, manufacturers have greater responsibility to provide clear installation instructions, specify exactly which hardware must be used, ensure site-assembled products match the tested configuration, and maintain traceability between the tested specimen and the finished installation.
PAS 24:2022+A12024 also emphasises that security performance belongs to the complete doorset or window system, rather than any individual component. Hardware, profiles, glazing, and installation all contribute to the final result, making tested system performance increasingly important when specifying products.
What the new standard means for you
While Approved Document Q sets the legal security requirement for new dwellings in England, PAS 24:2022+A12024 is the recognised standard most commonly used to demonstrate compliance in practice.
As specifications and certification schemes transition to the latest standard, manufacturers who fail to update testing or compliance language may find themselves at a competitive disadvantage. However, there is a wider factor at play, too: you need to maintain trust among your stakeholders.
This is because, as standards evolve, so do expectations from specifiers, certification bodies, and customers – making accurate language and up-to-date evidence more important than ever. Companies that provide these things are better placed to build and maintain trust with specifiers, fabricators, and installers.
On the other hand, companies that do not comply are likely to experience a decline in customer trust, especially among housebuilders and specifiers who rely on certification for assurance. They may be excluded from Secured by Design projects, lose competitive credibility, and be perceived as outdated or unreliable suppliers in an increasingly safety-conscious market.
Secured by Design has also outlined a transition process for member companies, while encouraging manufacturers to undertake updated testing against the latest standard.
Navigating the transition
It’s one thing to know that the regulations are changing – but another to grasp, to the necessary level, all the implications for product design, testing, certification, specification, and sales.
Manufacturers, fabricators, and installers will need to review testing evidence, specification language and certification pathways. At Yale, we believe we have an important role to play in supporting customers through that process, translating technical updates into clear guidance so they can make informed purchasing decisions and communicate security benefits more effectively to end-users.
In support of this, we have a wealth of experience developing and supporting products used within complete doorsets and windows tested to PAS 24:2022+A12024. This focus on complete-system performance is reflected in our own product development, with the latest example being our new Lockmaster 24 lock.
Products such as Yale Lockmaster 24 have been developed in response to evolving attack methods, including attempts to bypass high-security cylinders by accessing and manipulating the lockcase directly. Combining proven mechanical performance with smart capability, Lockmaster 24 supports complete doorsets designed to meet PAS 24:2022+A12024, helping customers stay aligned with changing market and specification requirements.
PAS 24:2022+A12024 should be seen not as an administrative hurdle, but as a necessary evolution alongside changing threats and expectations. Those who invest in current evidence, accurate communication, and whole-system performance will be best placed to earn trust and compete in an increasingly demanding market.
