Join the Dakar Rally drive of a lifetime – in a £500 Citroen Berlingo

There’s still time to join one of 2019’s most exciting automotive adventures, driving the original Dakar Rally route across the Sahara Desert in an ageing Citroen Berlingo.

Organised by Driven to Extremes, this challenging event raises funds to support military and emergency services veterans suffering from PTSD.

Originally conceived as a support programme to help ex-service personnel with their recovery, by taking them on confidence-building vehicle adventure, next year’s ‘Sahara Overland Challenge’ has been opened up to the public.

Driving a £500 Berlingo, participating teams will have to tackle the original Dakar Rally route through Morocco, covering 1,000 miles of sand, rock and gravel. With teams of adventurers from all walks of life already committed to this adventure, the clock is ticking till they set off next March.

Delivered by expedition specialist Max Adventure, the expert team behind the event has worked alongside the likes of explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Hollywood actor Tom Hardy in as far-flung places as Siberia, the North Pole and Mt Everest.

The ‘Sahara Overland Challenge’ sets off from Gibraltar, crossing the narrow Straits before heading into the wilds of North Africa. Over the following two weeks the adventurers will encounter everything from mountain passes and desert tracks to dry riverbeds.

Despite its humble demeanour, the Citroen Berlingo has proven itself a highly capable car to tackle such challenges. Reliable, robust and easy to repair in the middle of nowhere, the Driven to Extremes team have settled on this MPV as the vehicle of choice after last year’s successful ‘Dakar Challenge’.

Of course, with any used car costing £500 there are always going to be issues, so the adventurers are backed up by a professional support crew in expedition equipped Nissan Patrol 4x4’s who are on hand to cover any eventuality.

Following in the spirit of the Camel Trophy, the ‘Sahara Overland Challenge’ is neither a race nor a rally, but an adventurous expedition that requires endurance, stamina and resilience when the going gets tough.

Whilst battling through arduous terrain in such a challenging and extreme environment, common issues include punctured tyres, holed engine sumps, damaged exhausts and endless vehicle recoveries from soft sand. But with all teams pulling together when needed, no one is left stranded.

Entering the ‘Sahara Overland Challenge 2019’ costs just £1,995 per team, based on two people per car, and £2,395 per team if three per car. This cost includes return ferry from Spain to Morocco, all accommodation in Morocco, branded team shirts and vehicle graphics.

Each team must find and prepare their own Citroen Berlingo, or its twin, the Peugeot Partner, both fitted with the 1.9 non-turbo diesel engines but Driven to Extremes will advise on sourcing and preparing a suitable vehicle. Each team is also required to raise a minimum of £1,000 for Driven to Extremes in order to help further veterans.

The total adventure takes three weeks, but a two-week itinerary is available which allows you to fly to the start point in Gibraltar, and meet your car ready for the off.

  • 3 week option - 13 March to 3 April (Portsmouth to Portsmouth)
  • 2 week option - 16 to 31 March (Gibraltar to Gibraltar)

So, if you want the chance to test your mettle in a Citroen Berlingo on the original Dakar Rally route, contact info@driventoextremes.org for further information, or visit the 'Driven to Extremes’ website and Facebook page.

Garador Staff Donate Food to Local Food Bank

In the run up to Christmas staff at the UK’s leading garage door manufacturer, Garador, have been collecting food parcels to donate to their local food bank.

The Lord’s Larder, which is based in Yeovil, has been providing emergency food supplies to local families since 1991.

Garador staff have been donating food to their local food bank for the last couple of years, and this year they donated even more, with over 100 food items being given and a really great variety of things like biscuits, pasta, tinned vegetables, tinned fish and even a Christmas pudding!

This year, Garador’s very own Alanna Babiy organised the food collection and really worked hard to make it a success.

Garador’s Managing Director, Neil Discombe commented:
“We donated food to The Lord’s Larder last year in the run up to Christmas and this was something I was really keen to repeat again this year, to support those in need in the local community.”
Neil continues: “I was delighted with the range of products staff brought in from home and the increased number of goods donated from last year.”

Tradespeople to the rescue at Christmas

A recent online poll has shone a light on the hardworking tradespeople across the UK who are making sure everybody has a happy Christmas.

According to research by leading online supplier, IronmongeryDirect, almost half of those polled revealed that they had come to the rescue of customers who needed help fixing their christmas decorations and lights.

Of the 1,000 people polled, including builders, joiners, shop fitters and more, over 1/3 stated that they will be heading to work on Christmas Eve. However, this was surpassed by the findings that more than a quarter of tradespeople have had to previously work on Christmas Day.

Managing Director of IronmongeryDirect, Wayne Lysaght-Mason, commented:
“This research has really highlighted the lengths tradespeople are willing to go to make sure their customers can have a great festive season.
“Tradespeople work hard all year round but it’s important to recognise them even more at this time of year.
“From everybody at IronmongeryDirect, I would like to wish all of our customers and the trade a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.”

IronmongeryDirect has over 16,500 products available and in stock. Orders can be placed as late as 8pm for next day delivery from Sunday through to Friday and by 4pm on Saturdays. Free, no quibble returns are available on all products.

High Flying Hearts select Securefast Panic Hardware for new the Main Stand

Scottish Professional Football League club Heart of Midlothian have recently redeveloped the main stand at their Tynecastle Park stadium, situated in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh.

At a cost of £12M, the new stand officially opened last year, in time for the start of the new season.

With a view to the safety and security of their consistently high volume of visitors, together with clubs own ground staff, the architects specified the Securefast 900 Series Traditional Style Panic Hardware range throughout the stands corridors and concourse, ensuring safe egress to and from the new offices, hospitality lounges, director’s suite and the roof terrace.

The Securefast panic hardware was supplied by (SIIS) Specialist Ironmongery & Industrial Suppliers UK based in Dundee, with the 900 series being specifically selected due to the range being fully tested and fire rated for use on timber doors.

Certified to BS EN1125, the robust 900 series is designed to meet the demands of the clubs expected high volume attendance of over 20,000 visitors. The specification called for panic bolts and latches fitted to all double rebated doors, incorporated with an outside access device for easy access into these areas.

To compliment the corridor doors other doors were fitted with traditional push pads, certified BS EN179, in order to provide access to areas that are not open to the general public.

Preventing Panic in the High Street with Abloy UK

Security expert Abloy UK is highlighting the importance of access control systems that offer dynamic lockdown.

This follows recent reports that retail stores are being advised by counter-terror police launching the Protect and Prepare campaign, to develop emergency contingency plans recommending a 'sixty second' security checklist to avoid panic during reports of terror attacks.

High street shops throughout the country hit their busiest period during Christmas. With large numbers of people around, counter-terror police are providing stores with a security checklist that can be implemented in sixty seconds to prevent widespread panic in terror or emergency situations.

To improve reaction times and ensure evacuations can take place as smoothly as possible, staff should know who is in charge of emergency plans, when it is appropriate to evacuate a store, when to order a lockdown, and the best places to hide in the event of an attack.

An effective way for retailers to be prepared for such a threat is with Dynamic Lockdown, which is the ability to provide for basic life safety in the event of such eventualities as a terror attack or other unforeseen threats. It offers the capability to compartmentalise buildings and sites by controlling the flow of people by preventing access to unauthorised intruders, providing real physical security from the secure side of the door, while also allowing exit and escape where required.

This can have vital importance in protecting members of the public by preventing access for threats to enter a building but at the same time allowing them to leave the building if necessary.

With this in mind, Abloy UK has developed solutions that can provide for Dynamic Lockdown for a wide range of applications. For the retail sector specifically, Abloy systems are available to secure doors between public and non-public areas and exits from main staff areas. Products include Abloy’s range of compliant electric locks and the Escape Door System (EDS).

Electric locks - such as the Abloy EL560 solenoid lock and EL520 motorised lock - work by controlling either the latch or the handle, or by motorising the bolt back once a proximity card is presented or a request to exit device is used. This ensures that only authorised personnel are able to gain access to the building, and the system will prevent any unauthorised persons from entering.

What’s more, the EDS offers blocking with a fail-unlocked locking element that does not require any mechanical input to operate, and intelligent control that allows connection to fire alarm systems or other building control systems to ensure escape in an emergency. The Trigger unit incorporates a key-switch and a push button that tells the controller to release the locking mechanism to allow safe escape.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, commented:
“This is a superb initiative by counter-terror police as it will make retailers more proactive and able to respond faster to potentially life-threatening events.
“Egress from a building can be a matter of life and death, so here at Abloy we continuously promote the importance of emergency escape systems with free training on standards and compliance via our Academy.”

For further information on EDS go to https://bit.ly/2zNWfX9, for more further information on Electric Locks go to https://bit.ly/2QdsTfb

Warrior Doors proves it’s regarded as a gem by Jewellers in Handsworth, Birmingham

When it comes to businesses seeking positive feedback from customers, Warrior Doors, a Secured by Design member company that specialises in manufacturing secure entrance doorsets, has achieved the ultimate accolade.

Out of the 12 jewellery shops in Soho Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, close to the City’s landmark Jewellery Quarter, Warrior Doors has supplied and installed its bespoke doors to 9 of them.

Such is the power of personal recommendation!

It’s no wonder that Warrior Doors, a Birmingham-based company, is receiving commissions both on its doorstep and from high value jewellers, banks and bullion dealers when its doors have withstood attacks by sledgehammers, axes, battering rams and ram raids by vehicles.

The company’s goal is to maximise security without compromising on light or visual aesthetics providing a unique range of high-specification security doors that have surpassed the most rigorous security testing to achieve certification to LPS1175 Security Levels 2, 3, 4 (version 7).

Even Warrior Doors’ SR2 standard composite glazed doors have withstood vehicle ram raids and can block a 9mm round. Warrior Doors is the first company in the country to have achieved a fully glazed door to LPS1175 security level 4 (SR4) that can open either into or out from a building.

Gucci, Sloane Street, London

Managing Director, Brett Barratt, said:
“Spending on security is often underestimated and not considered as an investment in the business until the full impact of a robbery is experienced first hand.
“The real costs are to people involved who can be traumatised by the event for months, if not longer.”
Loss of high-value stock, whether it’s cash, diamonds, gold and watches can have a huge impact on the business continuity and in some cases the business never actually recovers, forced eventually to close down.

Brett explained: “Warrior Doors has been able to provide some of the highest quality security doors available without compromising on the exacting demands of jewellers towards aesthetic appearance and maximum vision into their shops.
“We have worked with a range of high value retailers including jewellers and bullion dealers, helping them to feel the benefits of being protected by a high security door from Warrior Doors.”
Brett added: “I am very proud of the work we do with our high-end security products, SR2, SR3 and SR4. They are fantastic products.”

In one video on the company’s website, you can see a prolonged attacked using a 5 Series BMW car on a door installed at the front entrance to a jeweller’s shop in Smethwick, Birmingham, on 2 October, 2017.

Even after repeated ramming attempts by the car and subsequent unsuccessful attempts to force entry by the police and fire brigade, the door could still be opened and closed and locked perfectly!

One of the assailants, who was trapped in the interlock in the jeweller’s shop, was arrested by police. The other assailant fled the scene.

The video can be viewed at: www.warriordoors.co.uk

The company also makes high-specification secured doorsets for commercial and industrial premises as well as local authority housing and housing associations.

Mysterious Brick-Built McLaren Spied in Central London

A new McLaren has been spotted during dynamic testing ahead of its introduction in January.

The car’s brick-based construction has made it necessary for development to move from McLaren’s usual secret facility near Idiada in Spain to a busy LEGO® Store in Central London.

Under the camouflaged body, the shape is recognisably a McLaren. Insiders suggest it has been designed with frequent reassembly by future owners in mind.

This isn’t the first time that McLaren has ventured away from its famous carbon fibre construction in favour of interlocking bricks.

Back in 2017, the McLaren 720S was converted into a 280,000 brick 1:1 scale replica and was finished with the help of visitors to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

An easier-to-complete version can still be purchased in any Lego Store as part of the company’s Speed Champions range.

The story is expected to build in January when the new McLaren is unwrapped. A short video has been released and can be viewed here: www.youtu.be or by clicking the image below.

Be prepared: Security professionals forecast crime will rocket over the festive season

A timely, stark reminder was issued this week that there is likely to be a surge in thefts, burglaries and robberies over the Christmas fortnight, based on the evidence of the past three years.

Overall, the figures rose 20% during this time according to VPS Security, specialists in providing protection for vacant commercial, retail and residential properties, construction sites, utility stations and transport hubs.

Analysis of crime statistics provided via Freedom of Information Act requests last December showed that each day of the holidays crooks committed an average of 448 burglaries, 65 robberies and 1,082 thefts.

The total number of thefts over that festive period recorded in England and Wales climbed from 5,524 in the financial year 2015 to 2016 to 6,278 in 2016/17.

Robberies increased by 20 per cent from 770 in 2015/16 to 918 in 2016/17, Meanwhile thefts were up 22 per cent to more than 15,000 over last year's holiday compared to 12,398 the previous.

"Rather than warning people after the event, when this year's data becomes available, we thought it would be better to remind people of the data from last Christmas, so that they can be better prepared."
A statement from VPS Security explained: "Properties without security are up to five times more likely to be affected by these crimes, and vacant properties in particular are prime targets for thieves and trespassers."

In addition to the impact on both commercial and residential properties, attention is also focussed on construction sites, almost all of which are closed down and left unguarded over the festive break. According to the Chartered Institute of Building, who published a guide to construction site security last month, 92% of construction sites experienced theft last year.

VPS Security recommend homeowners and tenants use the police.uk website guide on crime prevention, and for local authorities, housing associations, commercial, retail and facilities managers to at least seek a risk assessment of their vacant property portfolio.

Their own guide to Smart Technology also offers up-to-date information on security solutions above and beyond the deployment of guards, able to be adapted to create the best fit-for-purpose security solutions for housing and commercial units as well as for construction sites.

Belfox European expansion will aid UK market

GATE technology has been in the bloodstream of Edgar Fierle for more than 30 years. His electro engineering background had been a more than adequate foundation on which to enter the access control industry.

Yet, even he could not have forecast the success that Belfox has had in becoming a major power in European markets. Today, Belfox enjoys a 70 per cent share in the Austrian market; 60 per cent in Germany and 40 per cent in both Belgium and the Netherlands; has a substantial presence in France, Poland, Denmark and Sweden.

The company manufactures over 4,000 sliding gate openers a year for the Austrian market alone and therefore it is no surprise that it is investing more than 5 million Euros in a new production plant on the outskirts of Frankfurt. With 8,000 sq. metres of space it is double the size of the company's current facility and is scheduled to come on stream at the beginning of 2017.

'We need this new plant to cope with the current production and also for expansion into other parts of the world,' said Fierle. 'It is what we must have.'
Today, the company is headed by both himself and Rrezarta Beqiraj who took over ownership some three years ago, and together they have spearheaded the progress of Belfox and together look to move forward.

While Europe is naturally the main focus for Belfox, it has not been oblivious to the potential offered by a growing automatic gate market within the UK. Hence two years ago it established a UK operation.

'Yes, it is a different market. Gate safety in the UK is moving differently and we've had to adapt. At the start Europe introduced safety norms, but the UK has taken those further. Like the pinch points on the hinges. It has to be less than 100mm and that is only in the UK. There is pressure in the UK for greater safety because of what has happened and that means we have to understand that and work on what the market here wants. There is a different market structure. Here the focus is very much on safety and, of course, price.'

With its clear message of not wishing to manufacture gates, but working alongside manufacturers to create products, Belfox has built several links with major players. The success of these 'partnerships' gives them confidence for the future.

'We have learnt together,' he said. 'That has been of great benefit because it has given us experience and we have been able to build on that. Ours is the technology of the drive portals. To make them visually good and design so that it enhances the look of the gate, as well as having all the safety features and control panels with safety features. The market might be very focused on price but it also wants something that sets one manufacturer apart from another. Something different and that's why we work with each company individually.'

Fierle though is an engineer who is always looking forward and knows only too well that today's technology is the foundation for tomorrow's innovation.

'Yes, there is always something new. Today investigations into safety electronics show that it could become so sophisticated that we don't need safety edges. We are developing motors in line with the latest energy consumption regulations that are no more 0.05 watts and of course there is smart technology which gives greater freedom and means problems can be identified no matter where you are. Solar technology is another area but we have been doing that for several years and there is a lot of competition.'

Fierle is not one to speculate about the market, but his experience, and that of the Belfox team as one of the leading innovators in Europe on gate automation means that they know what the market wants, probably before it even is aware that it is available.

As Belfox continues to grow its markets under the guidance of owner Rrezarta Beqiraj with the onset of its new factory, there is little doubt that it will build its UK operation.

'Yes, it is working well in the UK and we have some good partnerships. We know that more will follow. For us it is not about volume, but about helping manufacturers build products that offer something different that puts them ahead in the market’
