Husky Sliding Door Hardware specified for Luxury Villa in Veluwezoom Nature Reserve

Bloot Architecture, a concept-driven architectural practice located in the Netherlands, has recently specified P C Henderson’s popular Husky 100 sliding door system for the renovation of a luxury villa in Velp.

After falling in love with the beautiful and picturesque surroundings of the National Park Veluwezoom in Holland, the architecture firm’s client purchased a dilapidated 1950’s villa in order to live in their dream location.

What ensued was a sustainable refurbishment and extension project – key features included the creation of a large open plan living area, full of natural light, with the inclusion of a flexible office space built on via an extension. The client also required an entresol space on the upper floor which could be opened up or closed off to be used as a guest room when necessary.

The architectural practice’s solution was to install large sliding partition doors in both areas which, when combined with large windows and passageways, would allow natural light to penetrate through the building freely.

Tjeerd Bloothofd, owner at Bloot Architecture commented:
“Creating a large open space full of natural light was a key feature of the project brief. Sliding partition doors not only complemented the modern interior design but also allow the wall openings to be fully opened up, fulfilling the project brief exactly.
“The design included two large oak veneer doors in both areas so it was also important that we specified sliding door hardware which could cater for such heavy doors – whilst also ensuring optimal performance and minimal maintenance. We had specified P C Henderson for a previous project so I didn’t hesitate in recommending the brand to our client”.

With a weight capacity of 100kg, P C Henderson’s Husky 100 sliding door hardware was identified as the best solution for the project. The sliding door hardware was used in both the living area and the entresol – when open the doors let natural light flow freely through the building and when closed create smaller private areas which retain their own individual atmosphere.

Andrew Royle, Sales and Marketing Director at P C Henderson commented:
“Creating flexible living areas with functional use of space is certainly a rising trend at the moment. As a result we’ve noticed a significant increase in the specification of partition sliding doors as they’re a great way to create such spaces – the village project by Bloot Architecture is a fantastic example of this”.

Catering for doors weighing up to 50kg and 100kg, Husky Sliding is the company’s flagship product for interior, wooden sliding door systems. A number of accessories are available to enhance the performance of this premium product, including an integrated soft stop system and a simultaneous action kit for bi-parting doors.

Island Gateway is Ferry, Ferry Nice

A new ferry terminal, created as a tourism and community gateway to the Isle of Arran, has been fitted from stem to stern with products supplied by GEZE UK.

The stunning development is part of a £30 million investment intended to upgrade the harbour, make it fit for 21st century travel and enhance passenger experience.

The terminal, designed by architects, Norr of Glasgow, is ship-shaped – following the traditional lines of a sea bearing vessel and is clad in sandstone. It proudly sits near the water’s edge and is filled with natural light that pours through a wall of windows fitted to the ‘stern’ of its west elevation which are operated by 30 GEZE Slimchain drives.

They provide the light and spacious feel to the building’s main entrance which opens out into a reception area. The Slimchain drives a natural ventilation system facilitated by a GEZE MBZ 300 two-zone control panel, which is integrated into the terminal’s building management system (BMS).

These have been placed throughout the two-storey building including in the departure lounge, alongside the GEZE Powerchain drives on the upper vents that were chosen to operate the larger windows. The lounge benefits from a double-height room with stunning views across Brodick Bay.

Stairwells were also fitted with Slimchain drives alongside GEZE OL Line manual opening systems to enable natural smoke and heat ventilation if required, and to give additional natural ventilation.

Beneath the glazed western elevation are two automatic swing doors to either side. These are powered by GEZE Slimdrive EMD-F operators - electro-mechanical drives that are extremely versatile, providing easy access for those with mobility issues. They provide power assisted opening and can be initiated using the operating button with guaranteed constant opening and closing speed.

At just 7cm high, the Slimdrive EMD-F operators are extremely discreet and sit neatly on the door frame. They offer a low-wear, hi-performance system which is exceptionally quiet in operation.

A further Slimdrive EMD-f was fitted to one of the side elevations of the building.

From the main entrance, accessed by its pass doors, a glazed corridor leads to a bi-parting sliding door powered by a GEZE Slimdrive SL NT operator, which leads into the foyer of the main reception area.

With a height of just 7cm – Slimdrive SL NTs are almost invisible, virtually silent in operation and can move leaf weights of up to 125kg. They are ideal for buildings with high levels of footfall and a continuous flow of people heading in and out of the building.

GEZE UK worked closely with CMS Enviro Systems which installed the products for the project.

Asset owners – Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) – together with Transport Scotland, North Ayrshire Council, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and the Coastal Communities Fund, invested to upgrade the facility. The previous infrastructure was constructed in the early 1970s and had reached the end of its serviceable life. The new facilities will accommodate growing numbers of car and passenger traffic travelling to the island.

The redevelopment includes a longer and deeper, two-berth pier and airport-style gangway – safer for passengers boarding and disembarking vessels. Land has been reclaimed to provide improved parking and traffic marshalling areas.

The terminal itself incorporates 1328 sq metres of space and has capacity for 400 passengers.

Andy Howland, GEZE UK’s director of sales and marketing, said:
“This was a fascinating project with which to be involved. Many GEZE products were used throughout the build and much thought was given from the outset to making this an intelligent functional building geared up for the future, whilst embracing the natural environment in which it sits.”

Tiny Classic Ford Escort made of Gold, Diamonds & Silver being Auctioned for Charity

If bling is more your thing than driving then this is the perfect car for you. It’ll never be roadworthy, but this Ford Escort is worth a fortune. Why? It’s a one-off 1:25 scale model made from silver, gold and diamonds.

The project has been a slow-burning labour of love for professional jeweller – and petrolhead – Russell Lord. The owner, over the years, of 55 full-sized Ford Escort cars, Lord first began work on this amazing model 25 years ago, pouring thousands of hours into completing the car.

The body is made of silver and the car also features gold brakes and spoiler, 18-carat gold wheels and bonnet hinges, 18-carat white gold front grille, 72-point diamond headlights, orange sapphire indicators and ruby rear brake lights.

“It’s been a hobby that I’ve come back to again and again but three years ago I determined to finish it. I know this car inside out – so there were no plans I just built it from the ground up piece by piece,” said Lord, from Essex, in the UK.

Based on the works rally car driven by Ari Vatanen in the late 1970s, the Mk2 Escort – which cost 90,000 euros (£78,000) in materials alone – will be auctioned on the car auction website www.themarket.co.uk on May 2, with all profits donated to charity.

Details include spinning pulleys on the front of the engine, a moving diamond-encrusted platinum gear stick and the glass windows – that involved smashing countless vases to find sections of glass with exactly the right curve.

Timber doors supplier sponsors the planting of 100 trees at local primary school

XL Joinery, the market-leading supplier of doors and associated products, has partnered with Carbon Footprint to sponsor the planting of 100 trees at St Oswald’s Church of England Primary School in Bradford, in order to create wildlife habitats and encourage biodiversity in the school’s grounds.

Both companies joined the pupils of the primary school earlier this month to celebrate the planting of the trees, all of which are native British species grown in the UK and include Dog Rose, Hazel, Elder, Rowan, Wild Cherry and English Oak.

This activity comes off the back of XL Joinery’s recent carbon neutral accreditation, which was awarded due to the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing its CO2 emissions. The additional 100 trees in the school’s grounds will not only create an ideal habitat for wildlife and preserve the natural environment, but the activity also enabled the children to gain hands-on experience of how trees are planted and learn the importance of wildlife in their local area and beyond.

Tim Wood, Marketing Manager at XL Joinery, commented:
“We’re thrilled to have partnered with Carbon Footprint and St Oswald’s Church of England Primary School for the tree-planting activity. Reducing our impact on the environment is an important part of our company ethos, which is why we’re always looking for ways to actively help. We hope that the children enjoyed the activity as much as we did, and we look forward to seeing the trees come to life over the upcoming years!”

Dr. Wendy Buckley, Client Director at Carbon Footprint Ltd, commented:
“It’s great to see XL Joinery take a leading position in reducing and offsetting its carbon emissions. By supporting UK school tree planting, the company is also helping to educate the younger generations in environmental responsibility.”

Mr Shaun Wiseman, Assistant Headteacher at St Oswald’s Church of England Primary School, commented:
“We were delighted when Carbon Footprint informed us that XL Joinery would be visiting our school for the tree-planting activity. It’s wonderful to see the children become so involved with the initiative.”

Carbon Footprint is an organisation committed to helping businesses develop their sustainability credentials. For more information please visit www.carbonfootprint.com

Poor quality hardware in spotlight following Cumbrian flood door failings

With a recent BBC news report highlighting numerous failures in flood doors which were fitted into Cumbrian homes as part of a major flood resilience programme, Rapierstar is advising flood door manufacturers and installers to seek specialist guidance on the types of fasteners being used to ensure long term performance promises and customer satisfaction not compromised.

Flood doors are rapidly establishing themselves as a crucial product for making UK homes more flood resilient, in line with government strategy to cope with the increasing risks of flooding as a result of new building developments on flood plains and sea level rises.

However, flood doors must be able to perform in the long term and, given the particularly challenging conditions the doors have to withstand, the quality of components, materials and installation methods must be flawless.

Whilst a number of the issues in the Cumbrian flood resilience scheme, implemented following the devastating Storm Desmond in 2015, relate to locking mechanisms, the potential for fasteners to cause the failure of a flood door is high unless austenitic stainless steel are used.

Fasteners manufactured from this type of metal – usually grades A2 or A4 – offer the highest level of resistance to corrosion throughout a door’s service life of more than twenty years.

David Furness, MD of Rapierstar says:
“The flood door market offers excellent opportunities for growth when you consider that 5.2 million homes are considered ‘at risk’ of flooding in England alone, according to the Environment Agency.
“With so much potential, and significant investment already by a number of systems manufacturers and fabricators, we have to ensure there are no weaknesses that could mean a flood door fails to deliver on its promise - and that requires scrutiny of every component.
“Because the fasteners are the smallest components, it’s easy to take them for granted. But with flood doors being exposed to the harshest of environments, especially in areas with regular flood events, it’s vital that the most durable fasteners are used to avoid handles, hinges, locking systems and other hardware becoming loose or detached. This will help to minimise the risk of remedial work being necessary and protect the reputation of the flood door concept and their suppliers.”

As the UK’s largest supplier of specialist fasteners to the UK and Irish door and window industry, Rapierstar is uniquely positioned to advise doorset manufacturers on which fasteners to use for different applications.

The company also supports fabricators in the development and testing of all types of doors to ensure they can achieve essential performance certification, including PAS 1188-1:2014 for flood doors.

Garador Replace Gloss Black Finish with New Matt Black Finish

UK based garage door manufacturer, Garador, have just updated their colour range to include a new matt black finish on their steel up and over, side hinged and garage side doors.

Garador had previously had a gloss black paint finish for these garage doors but will now offer a matt black textured finish instead. The Jet Black (RAL 9005) colour will remain the same. The new textured finish will be introduced on garage doors from July 2019 onwards.

Garador’s Managing Director, Neil Discombe commented:
“The new matt black finish will be introduced in July, and the initial feedback we have had from our sample paint runs has been very positive, so we are looking forward to rolling this out to the industry as a whole.”
The new finish delivers a much softer appearance whilst retaining an attractive look. Because the matt black is more textured it is also more forgiving.

A SWIFT Launch for UK Specialty Door Manufacturer with New Presence in the USA

Originating in the UK and Europe, the popularity of high-speed folding doors in the U.S. has increased in recent years for those in the public services industries. While these doors can be considerably more expensive than the standard overhead door; they offer alternative benefits that can far outweigh the added expense.

Jewers Doors (UK) have been producing the Swift four-fold door for the fire service for over 30 years, and as explained by Michael Peters, President & CEO of Jewers Doors (US), “The doors move in a horizontal fashion, meaning that the opening you see is the opening you get”.

There is no risk of damage to the underside of the door, or more critically the lights and ladders on top of the fire truck, which is often associated with overhead doors as result of exiting prematurely. With the added benefits of speed, opening a 14 foot door in a staggering 5 seconds and reduced maintenance by eliminating torsion springs, cables and side tracks, the door has potential of saving municipalities huge expense over time through the cost of ownership and the avoidance of downtime.

Until recently, the procurement of these type doors has been difficult, with only a few manufacturers offering a product of this type in the U.S. While this has been beneficial to those early adopters, the laws of supply and demand haven’t helped in the cost of procurement.

Mark Jewers, a director of Jewers, commented:
“Jewers has operated in several major markets around the globe. Since the mid 1980’s we have been providing a robust bi-folding door - the SWIFT. During this time it has evolved into the modern, safe and highly engineered door it is today, and is sold at a competitive price point to help our clients realize the benefits of this type of door”.
Jewers, in less than 12 months, has quickly established a network of regional distributors and locally authorized installers across the U.S. and is now poised to begin bringing product into the States.

Michael Peters added,
“We have ensured that product can be delivered to site efficiently and effectively, as well as established ways in which post-installation service and maintenance can be effected through domestically sourced replacement parts.”
Jewers Doors (US) have now realised their first project in the Northeast and are currently specified on several other upcoming projects in each of the regions across the country.

Profile’s Sliding, Folding Door Tipped as Favourite - Again

Profile Doors, experts in sliding, folding doors, recently manufactured a 21 metre wide, bi-parting door for a new aircraft hangar belonging to leading race horse trainer, Mark Johnston.

Profile offer bespoke solutions for large openings on commercial and industrial applications, incorporating ease of operation, durability and security. With Class 5 wind resistance, the Ram-Fold door is perfect for aircraft hangars too.

The specialist folding door division of Alliance Door Engineering Ltd, was originally recommended to Mark Johnston by a fellow aviator, who’d had the Ram-Fold sliding, folding shutter installed on his own hangar and Mark, also suitability impressed, has now utilized the Ram-Fold door twice, with a similar sized folding door fitted previously on an older hangar.

The specific nature of the site requires the doors to be bi-parting, driven by motors on both sides which can be independently operated via remote control transmitters. Optimal safety around the door threshold is ensured by utilising multiple high precision, laser beam technology BEA safety sensors. The shutter leaves bunch clear of the opening, providing maximum clear opening dimensions.

The work has now ensured Mark has a hanger door capable of providing the required space and security to accommodate multiple aircraft.

Profile Doors, acquired by Alliance Door Engineering Ltd in 2007, have been supplying their in-house made range of folding, shutter doors to the trade for over 30 years, specialising in the larger applications which require cost effective and high security solutions.

For more information on the range of doors Alliance Door Engineering supply to the trade, please visit www.alliancedoors.co.uk or call 01942 683601 / email: info@alliancedoors.co.uk

London Concours to Display the Great Automotive Icons

The London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, will be hosting a special display of ‘The Icons’ presented by Footman James, in association with Azur.

This astonishing line-up of 13 cars, from Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost to Ferrari F40, each came to define their generation.

Whether it was through ripping up the rulebook, finding fame on the silver screen or being the poster car for a whole generation of buyers, each car in this class has established itself as a verified automotive icon.

Perhaps the earliest automotive icon is the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost; a model that gained global notoriety for running virtually non-stop over 14,000 miles in 1907. In that same year, only 14 of 104 cars managed to finish the 748-mile Scottish Reliability Trials, bringing into sharp focus just how impressive the Silver Ghost’s feat really was.

But achieving ‘Icon’ status doesn’t necessarily require a high price-tag. Also on display are a number of more everyday models that through ingenious design and innovation transformed motoring forever. The Land Rover Series I established an off-road lineage that continues to run to this day – over 70 years later – while the original Alec Issigonis-designed Mini utterly revolutionised the small car market. Both will line-up among ‘The Icons’ at London Concours.

Then there are the true performance icons, or bedroom wall poster cars that were faster, more advanced and more beautiful than anything else on the road at the time. London Concours will be displaying an early Jaguar E-Type Series I ‘Flat Floor’; one of fastest cars in the world at the time and still revered for its beautiful Malcolm Sayer-penned aerodynamic lines. Guests will also be able to admire the iconic shape of the Porsche 911, on display in legendary 1972 2.7 RS guise.

Of course, no collection of ‘Icons’ would be complete without paying homage to Italy’s great supercar manufacturers. Ferrari will be represented not only by the Dino, but also by the one-of-19 Ferrari F40 LM; a lighter, more powerful version of one of the most iconic Ferraris ever. The Lamborghini Countach will also take its place among ‘The Icons’ in sought-after downdraft configuration, featuring Weber carburettors.

In total, nearly 100 automotive greats of all eras will be on display on the idyllic lawns of the Honourable Artillery Company HQ when the London Concours rolls into the City from 5-6 June. Curated across seven distinct classes, including ‘The Outlaws’ and ‘The Innovators’, London Concours is the ultimate automotive summer garden party.

Andrew Evans, London Concours Director, said:
“Out of each of our seven classes, it was ‘The Icons’ that generated the most debate among our Steering Committee of motoring experts. In the end, we’ve arranged a collection of 13 indisputable icons that, in themselves, tell the story of the greatest motor cars ever built.
“But there’s plenty more for visitors to see at London Concours including fine watch displays from Montres Breguet, high-end Italian fashion from ISAIA and a luxurious hospitality offering from Searcys, Mark Hix and Veuve Clicquot.”

The full list of ‘Icons’ on display is:

Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost
Bentley 4.5-Litre Blower
Land Rover Series I
Volkswagen Beetle
Mini
Citroen DS
Jaguar E-Type
Ford GT40
Ferrari Dino 246 GT
Porsche 911 2.7 RS
Ferrari 288 GTO
Lamborghini Countach
Ferrari F40 LM

The London Concours 2019 takes place from 5-6 June. Tickets are available to buy now from www.londonconcours.co.uk/tickets

Aluroll’s Teleco Panel Offers Exclusive Benefits - Now With New Upgrades!

Introduced last year, Aluroll’s exclusive Teleco control panel is quickly becoming an industry favourite. Installers and end users alike are benefitting from an ever-growing list of design improvements and new features.

The only Teleco panel with a built-in alarm

Aluroll’s wireless panel is the only Teleco panel in the marketplace with a built-in alarm as standard. A shock sensor and powerful 98dB buzzer have been integrated into the bottom edge transmitter, providing additional peace of mind for Secureroll door owners without the need for accessories.

Integrated sleep mode for double the battery lifespan (and only one to replace)

A unique integrated sleep mode doubles the average battery lifespan to an estimated three years. Sleep mode limits communication between the panel and bottom edge transmitter to when the door is activated.

While many wireless transmitters have two batteries to replace, Aluroll’s has one long-life 3.6V lithium battery which end users can purchase replacements directly for (available from www.batteryterminal.co.uk). Combined with the power-saving sleep mode, site visits to replace batteries should be a thing of the past.

NEW upgraded metal handsets

Aluroll Teleco panels come with two four-button handsets as standard. The old plastic bodied design has been upgraded to an identical aluminium one, for the same stylish appearance with a higher quality feel.

Pre-programmed for convenience

All Aluroll safety edges and handsets are pre-programmed and pre-tested before leaving the factory. This hassle-free plug-and-play design saves installers time on site.
Push buttons inside the Teleco panel assist with limit setting and eliminate the need for a test lead.

Improved LED courtesy light

Teleco’s old bulb has been replaced by an integrated LED light strip for longevity and brighter light.

And the best part? All of these are standard features, at no extra cost!

For installers looking to offer a little extra, there are also plenty of new and exciting upgrade options.

Mobile phone operation is made simple through the addition of a plug-in GSM SIM card module, which slots into the panel. Wireless wall switches now have bidirectional technology, allowing users to check the status of their door from inside the home.

A new Teleco Moonlight lighting system can be used to add ambient lighting on the door. As with the panel itself, these extras offer convenience with a fuss-free install.

Speak to Aluroll on 0800 977 8975 to arrange a Teleco panel demonstration or training.

Europe's first Jackshaft Garage Door opener with integrated Wi-Fi

The new LiftMaster LM3800W jackshaft garage door opener sets new standards: It is the first opener on the European market to have an integrated Wi-Fi interface. That makes an additional gateway unnecessary. Another advantage for installers and customers is the space-saving installation on the wall instead of on the ceiling, which can be carried out with little effort.

Garage door openers from the world market leader LiftMaster stand for smart operation, easy installation and maximum safety. Now the company is introducing the LM3800W, Europe's first jackshaft garage door opener with integrated Wi-Fi. No additional gateway is needed to connect the opener to a home router.

The connection to the MyQ-Smart Home system takes place directly at the opener in just a few steps. Then the proven MyQ technology can be fully utilised. That means users can monitor and control the door opener independently of the location using an app on a smartphone, tablet or PC. The MyQ App is available for free from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Quick installation and powerful for everyday life

Often garage door openers are installed in the middle of the ceiling. If there is not enough or too much room on the ceiling, the space is needed for something else, or the ceiling-mounted opener just does not look good, consumers have to find an alternative. LiftMaster installers can now offer their customers a solution with the LM3800W jackshaft operator for sectional doors with spring operation.

The opener is mounted in a space-saving way, inconspicuously next to the garage door. The installation is time-optimised with a few simple steps and also eliminates the need for overhead work. End positions are adjusted intuitively and electronically (as already occurs with the LiftMaster rail openers). The opener automatically learns the forces required for opening and closing.

It is capable of moving garage doors weighing up to 130 kilograms with maximum dimensions of 3.00 metres in height and 5.50 metres in width. Soft start and soft stop ensure smooth opening and closing.

The included MyQ wireless LED light provides excellent illumination. In addition, up to five additional separately available LED lights can be connected to the opener and controlled by mobile devices: During opening and closing of the garage door directly via the opener, via MyQ, via the hand-held transmitter or via a separately available multifunction console (78EV).

The smart LED lights, which can be used flexibly and independently of the opener, can, for example, be positioned in the garage or hallway for optimal illumination (not for outside use).

Standard package and optional accessories

The new LM3800W jackshaft garage door opener comes with two designer 4-channel handheld transmitters (TX4EVF), an improved shaft-to-drive coupling, a 12V E-lock for automatic locking of the garage door and a long-lasting MyQ LED light. Optionally available accessories – for example are, a fail-safe photocell and a back-up battery – allowing the system to be specifically tailored to the individual housing and security needs.

Further information is available from
Chamberlain GmbH, Saar-Lor-Lux-Straße 19, 66115 Saarbrücken (new address from June 2019).
