AlluGuard puts your Preference First

Which controller do you prefer for your roller garage doors? AlluGuard now offers a choice of three - Somfy Rollixo, Teleco NRG and the Sommer Vision.

Why not just have one and promote that as the best?
"Each control unit has its merits and, rather than dictate, we think letting our Customers decide is the best way to provide the ideal roller garage door solution. Customers definitely have preferences, so limiting choice is counterintuitive to good customer service.
With the current industry-wide issues affecting supply chains, it also adds a level of flexibility to help keep product flowing smoothly." Commented Ian Hetherington, AlluGuard's Managing Director.
The three units meet different needs:

The Somfy Rollixo is part of AlluGuard's ability to offer a complete Somfy solution Ð motor, control unit, bottom slat transmitter and safety edge, all from Somfy and unique in the industry. With its built in-alarm and versatile feature set, Rollixo is fully loaded straight from the box. Rollixo's compatibility with the complete Somfy ecosystem of Smart Home hubs and accessories, Connexoon and Tahoma, opens up additional sales opportunities to the Garage Door Specialist. AlluGuard offers the wireless safety edge as standard with the wired version as a no-cost option.

The Teleco NRG controller is a proven unit with the option to increase its capability with an optional wired or wireless alarm module and a range of accessories. AlluGuard offers the wireless safety edge as standard with the wired version as a no-cost option.

Both the Somfy Rollixo and the Teleco systems offer the unique electronic safe edge system from Alluguard (ESE). This option removes any doubt over the door perhaps not stopping and reversing and because it doesn't require hard stops as optical safe edge systems (OSE) systems do. The ESE rubber edge continues from the door curtain and into the guides without the gaps OSE systems leave.

The Sommer Vision controller is offered in its ultra-reliable wired safety edge version with the option to add an alarm module and selected Sommer accessories.

Which one do you prefer?

Talk to AlluGuard about your roller garage door control preferences - call Ian Hetherington or Matthew Berry on 01709 529 723.

Very Rare, Limited Edition 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo ‘Valentino Balboni’ up for Auction

Lamborghini enthusiasts have an amazing opportunity to bid online for an extremely rare and collectable sportscar from the iconic Italian stable. Silverstone Digital Auctions is proud to list a stunning Limited Edition 2009 registered Lamborghini Gallardo 'Valentino Balboni'.

It is one of only three finished in Nero black in the UK to have the sought-after manual gearbox and is a desirable right-hand drive that has covered just 16,600 miles. The significance of this very special Gallardo model, the LP550-2 Valentino Balboni, is that it was the last naturally aspirated, rear-wheel drive Lamborghini available with a manual gearbox. Only 50, out of the total global production of 250 were manual, and only a handful supplied new to the UK in right-hand drive form. This car is one of those rare precious jewels.

Online bidding at Silverstone Digital Auctions, the new and fast-evolving specialist online auction platform from the experienced team at Silverstone Auctions, has already commenced for this rare and exciting opportunity. The model being auctioned is a superb example of a much-coveted car that celebrates the legendary Lamborghini test driver and brand ambassador, Valentino Balboni.

It was Balboni who influenced the design of Lamborghini cars for over four decades up until his retirement in 2009. The Gallardo ‘Valentino Balboni’ (based on the Gallardo 550) was released in his honour upon his retirement, in a design-led by Balboni featuring all his favourite characteristics. It was the first rear-wheel-drive Lamborghini model to roll out the factory in 10 years, reducing its weight and optimising its sporty performance. Such was its appeal, the esteemed Gallardo Balboni Limited Edition sold out immediately. It remains as desirable today, as it was back in 2009.

Finished in Nero Noctis, with a full Nero Perseus leather interior featuring ‘Balboni' signature stripes and a centre console in Bianca Polar, this is a gem of a rare sportscar for any enthusiast or savvy investor. It has been the prized possession of just four careful owners since new and has a comprehensive Lamborghini service history. With a powerful 5.2 litre engine rated at 542 bhp, Lamborghini claims the Balboni can reach an exhilarating top speed of 320 km/hr (199mph) with an impressive 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds.

With a packed specification that includes 19" Scorpius Multi-Spoke Alloy Wheels, Gloss Black Calipers, Satellite Navigation, Lifting Kit, Reversing Camera, Multi-Function Flat Bottom Leather Steering Wheel, Dual Climate Control, it is a golden ‘not to be missed’ opportunity.

The clock is ticking fast! Bidding for the highly exclusive Limited Edition 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo 'Valentino Balboni' closes online at Silverstone Digital Auctions at 7pm on Wednesday, 2nd February 2022.

Check out Lot 1374 at www.silverstonedigitalauctions.com for further details on this, and a wide range of other prestige and iconic cars.

Shortlist Revealed for ADSA Sponsored Award

The shortlist for the category sponsored by the Automatic Door Suppliers Association in the AI Specification Awards 2022 has been revealed.

The Product Design and Innovation Electronic Award (Electronic) attracted a stellar number of entries highlighting products and services that combine traditional architectural ironmongery and electronic/technological solutions.

It is the first year that electronic solutions have been given their own category – reflecting innovation within the industry and the demand for smart systems that can be used remotely or incorporated into wider building management.

The shortlist includes:
  • DC300G-HF – Electro-mechanical Hold-Open Free Swing Door Control - Manufacturer: ASSA ABLOY
  • KitLock KL1100 locker lock - Manufacturer: Codelocks
  • Neo Cylinder - Manufacturer: Salto Systems
  • Virtual Engineer - Manufacturer: Strand Technologies

A video presentation on the shortlisted entries can be seen here: www.youtube.com .

The winners of the 40th biennial awards will be announced at a gala lunch, in London on 5 May. Organised by The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), they are staged to identify and reward excellence in the specification of architectural ironmongery in the construction industry.

Said ADSA Managing Director Ken Price:
“We are delighted to sponsor this new award. As an association representing the automatic door industry, we regularly see examples of great innovation that use electronic solutions to meet new requirements and help solve problems. This award is a celebration of the cutting-edge technology and its application.”

The Automatic Door Association (ADSA) was formed in 1985 to establish quality and safety standards for the automatic door industry. It developed the first industry code of practice which covered safety aspects of automatic doors for pedestrian use. This subsequently formed the basis of BS 7036: 1988, a code of practice for the provision and installation of safety devices for automatic, power-operated pedestrian door systems.

Its membership includes manufacturers, suppliers, installers and service providers of automatic doors – from global companies to sole traders. ADSA member organisations supply more than 75% of the UK market.

The 1st Fire Door solutions to attain Q Mark for Smoke

Winkhaus FireFrame® composite fire doorsets solutions are the first company to attain the new Q Mark 3rd party audit certification for Smoke and become the first company to attain Q Mark certification for all three critical performance requirements: Fire, Smoke and Security.

Winkhaus UK Technical Director Chris Flaherty explains the importance of the new Q Mark certification for Smoke:
“The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) guidelines for fire doors identifies three critical performances that require testing – Fire, Smoke & Security. The guidelines also clearly state that these critical performances should be 3rd party independently audited”. “Traditional test evidences most often include smoke resistance, but the smoke evidence has not been controlled by the 3rd Party independent audit / Certification scheme as recommended by the MHCLG”.
Jon Cole, Chief Operating Officer at Secured by Design comments:
“In 2021 we secured agreement from all of the UK certification bodies working in this area to incorporate smoke control into their fire and security schemes for flat/apartment entrance doorsets”. “We fully support the active and progressive position that Winkhaus has taken on this matter, Chris and his technical team have demonstrated that it is possible to meet all of the requirements in one package. Flat/Apartment entrance door sets are becoming increasingly complex products and Winkhaus are the first to meet all of the SBD requirements through the Q Mark 3rd party certification scheme”.
Chris explains: “Driving this change ensures that all three performances are tested and regularly independently audited to prove that all future production in the coming weeks, months and years will continue to provide the safest door set solution”.
“We are delighted that our composite fire doorset solutions are the first to be awarded Q Mark Certification for Smoke and the first to hold all three Q Mark certifications from BM Trada, with our timber doorset solutions currently completing the same certification process”.

Heras announces move to simplified product range to drive growth

A move towards a simplified range of permanent perimeter protection and entrance control solutions will be the platform from which Heras can achieve strong growth in 2022.

The company – which was founded in 1952 and has grown to become Europe’s leading end-to-end supplier of permanent and mobile perimeter protection solutions – has been undertaking a wide-reaching review of its product portfolios to identify its most popular and adaptable ones to meet the changing needs of its customers.

Heras has always prided itself on having an extensive range of solutions for nearly every eventuality of a site’s requirements – but it recognises the benefits of having a smaller selection of solutions as part of a plan to further improve its speed and agility to fulfil orders, deliver projects and maintain the highest standards of customer service.

The Group Product Strategy Review was initiated by Heras Group in the Netherlands and included all 25 European territories where the brand operates.

The process has been a challenging one, as in the UK alone, the company serves sectors including transport and logistics, critical infrastructure and utilities, manufacturing and industry, governmental, public places and recreation, and retail and trade. And the review has covered demarcation (fencing/railing) and entrance control (gates/barriers/bollards/blockers) product portfolios.

Ian Crosby, Chief Marketing Technology Officer, said that offering a comprehensive range of products has previously sent out a very strong message to the market that Heras is a one-stop-shop provider of permanent perimeter protection and entrance control solutions – but it recognised that too much choice could present its own challenges for its customers.
“The Group Product Strategy Review has been a great opportunity for Heras to look at the changing needs of our customers and evaluate the process by which we present them with solutions,” said Mr Crosby.
“Having a more targeted portfolio of products will be at the heart of a drive to improve the speed and efficiency of specifying the requirements of a site – and then the timescale for installation – as part of a fundamental requirement to improve the Heras experience.”

Heras, which has its UK head office in Doncaster, is also planning to use 2022 to embed two ground-breaking innovations that it launched last year.

Last summer, it launched the next generation of perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDSs) to provide even greater levels of perimeter protection. These were developed for high-security sites (such as infrastructure of national or strategic importance) but are also used on sites such as transport and logistics hubs (especially where there’s high-value stockholding).

The two systems, GeoMic and GeoPoint – which both have pro versions – are designed to complement and greatly increase the overall effectiveness of both existing and specified perimeter protection fence and gate lines.

PIDSs are usually perimeter fence mounted (but they can also be wall or ceiling mounted) and are installed on the fence fabric to detect any potential intruders attempting to enter the site by climbing over, cutting through or even going under the fence.

The other ground-breaking innovation that Heras launched last year and is currently rolling out is Connect – a cloud-based portal that offers real-time insights into the status of an entrance control system, including swing, sliding and bi-fold gates, with remote monitoring of user access and automatic alerts and notifications via smartphone, tablet or PC. It also enables users to open access systems via mobile phone, as well as enables Heras to provide remote and proactive monitoring of the systems.

Mr Crosby added: “2022 is going to be a very important year for Heras – not least because it marks our 70th anniversary – and the Group Product Strategy Review has been central to driving greater clarity from which we can deliver more-effective solutions that support our ability to speed up the whole process of giving customers an exceptional experience.”

Abloy UK launches Mobile Keys for increased security, convenience and efficiency

Abloy UK has launched ASSA ABLOY’s IncedoTM Business Mobile Keys, a new type of credential that offers secure mobile access, simplified management and user convenience and efficiency.

IncedoTM Business provides a user-friendly interface for managing your access control platform. You have a choice of system management options — Lite or Cloud — to administer Incedo-enabled hardware in a way that best suits your business’ needs.

As an evolutionary extension to the ecosystem, new IncedoTM Business Mobile Keys can be enabled on mobile phones, tablets, watches and other wearable electronic devices, allowing the device to function as a user’s credential to enter an office or other business facilities.

They are convenient to use and can be instantly issued, changed or revoked over the air. What’s more, smart devices can add another layer of protection with their biometric authentication and screen locking.

Pip Courcoux of Abloy UK explains:
“Research shows that 17.3% of card or fob users lose at least one card or fob annually[1], compromising security and creating a cost for the organisation to replace.
“Mobile credentials are seen as a more secure way to manage access, and people are less likely to lose a mobile phone in comparison with other credential types. A mobile key can also verify the identity of an individual, for example using a verification code or facial recognition.
“A growing number of buildings are now integrating touchless access control systems too in order to create safer, cleaner environments, so the launch of IncedoTM Business Mobile Keys couldn’t have come at a better time.”

IncedoTM Business Mobile Keys offer user convenience and efficiency by allowing ‘keys’ to be sent over the air to temporary staff or visitors, removing face to face handovers. For existing staff, mobile credentials eliminate the need for a key, card or fob, which also reduces touchpoints and the use of plastic materials.

Secure mobile access offers another layer of protection with the mobile devices’ biometrics and screen locking, and there is no risk of breaches from card sharing. Plus, the transmission range is greater when using a mobile key, so readers can be placed behind a locked door.

IncedoTM Business Mobile Keys simplify management too. The system administrator manages user IDs via the secure management portal, and a mobile key can be transferred to the user’s phone via the mobile access app.

The system administrator then adds mobile key into Incedo Business UI and associates it with the user, allowing them to present the mobile key to the configured reader to open the access point.

For further information on IncedoTM Business Mobile Keys or any other products and services available from Abloy, visit bit.ly/3GM6prX, call 01902 364 500, or email info@abloy.co.uk.

Huge Success for Garador's Charity Campaign

Garador’s innovative social media campaign to raise money for charity has proved an outstanding success.

In the run-up to Christmas, Britain’s leading garage door manufacturer wanted to raise money for the major charity Crisis which helps homeless people and asked their nationwide network of garage door installers to send through pictures of their recent installations. For each picture it shared on social media, a £10 donation was made to Crisis.

Stockport’s Carrington Doors added a fresh look to a classical
design with Garador’s glazed Up and Over in Chartwell Green.

Garador’s Managing Director, Neil Discombe said:

“We were absolutely thrilled by the response from our network of stockists and installers. Thanks to their wonderful generosity, we have raised £300 for homeless charity Crisis.”

The pictures sent in also showed the huge range of garage doors now being installed across the country. The continued popularity of Garador up & over and sectional garage doors was quite apparent, with a variety of shots showing their versatility in terms of designs, sizes, materials and colours. Whilst white is still a favourite amongst homeowners, it is interesting to see how Britain is beginning to colour up its residential areas.

VB Garage Doors melding old and new, with two Linear Medium
sectional garage doors installed in the Dorset countryside.

 Neil continues:

“We loved how the pictures showed the breadth of colours and materials we offer, with naturally beautiful timber doors, but also more striking steel door colours like Anthracite Grey and Chartwell Green.”
Windows in garages also featured strongly, a trend probably enhanced by people now using garages for storage, exercise and even home offices, as homeowners seek to personalise their door to suit their requirements.

Extra wide garage doors are now a major feature in modern builds. The
Garage Door Worshop in Bedfordshire  recently installed this stand out
 wooden double Garador door.

With homelessness continuing to rise in the UK, Crisis perform a vital role in supporting homeless people. They provide education, employment, housing and well-being services and work side-by-side with thousands of people to help them leave behind homelessness. The team at Garador were pleased to support such a worthwhile cause.

Severn Garage Doors services added a really stylish new
look with an extra-wide version of Garador’s
Linear Large Sectional door.

New Heights

While this charity campaign brought in several pictures which highlighted Garador’s extensive collection of door models and sizes, there were also references to Garador’s range of taller 6’8’’ and 7’2’’ standard door heights on its Carlton and Horizon up and over garage doors.

The idea of taller 6’8” and 7’2” garage doors makes sense for many new builds where standard imperial size 6’6” and 7’0” garage door heights don’t always match standard openings.

Cathedral steel up & over garage door in Fir Green,
fitted by Carrington Doors

Garador’s 6’8” and 7’2” garage door heights, which include a 6mm fitting tolerance, offer a perfect fit for more common standard brickwork opening sizes. This means there is no need for uPVC cladding, saving both time and materials.

The new 6’8” door heights in the range can be supplied with either canopy or retractable lifting gear, whilst the 7’2” door heights are available with retractable lifting gear only.

Find out more about the wide range of modern garage doors now available at www.garador.co.uk or by calling 01935 443722.

Morgan Plus Four Lm62 Celebrates Six Decades Since Morgan’s Le Mans Win

The Morgan Motor Company announces the launch of the Plus Four LM62, a model which celebrates the company’s legendary class win in the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Based on the standard Morgan Plus Four and limited to just 62 examples, it pays tribute to the Morgan Plus 4 SuperSports – known by its registration TOK 258 – which took victory in the 2.0-litre class of the gruelling endurance race six decades ago.

The renowned TOK 258 was finished in dark green, while a particular shade of red was popular on motorsport Morgan vehicles of the time, and these two colours have inspired the hues available on the Plus Four LM62. A Heritage White hardtop – just like the one fitted to the famous race car – comes as standard, marking the first time this item has been available for the model.

Further paying homage to the victorious Morgan is an LM62 graphics pack, which includes roundels with the number ‘29’ – as per TOK 258 – as well as an LM62 rear badge, silver-painted wire wheels, a Le Mans-style fuel filler cap and a domed rear panel.

These touches are complemented by driving spot lights, body-coloured A-pillars, a black splitter and cowl mesh, polished stoneguard, black mohair sidescreens, a sidescreen bag embroidered with the LM62 logo, and an active sports exhaust with black tailpipes.

Inside, the model is adorned with an LM62 metal plaque, displaying the car’s unique build number from its run of 62 examples, along with LM62 laser-engraved black saddle-leather door pulls and headrests embroidered with the specially designed LM62 graphic.

Bespoke satin lacquer rubber mats with black vinyl edges, painted steering-wheel centre, and a Tawny wood centre-tunnel top and dashboard come fitted to the LM62 as standard, while heated black leather Comfort Plus seats with horizontal pleating, perforated seat centres and matching stitch colour, complete with leather wrapped seat backs complete the interior aesthetic.

To further personalise your Plus Four LM62, options include a soft-top hood, LM62-specific photographic build record, and an LM62 accessory pack which includes two-eared wheel spinners, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, headlight tape, and a chrome interior rear-view mirror.

Steve Morris, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Motor Company, said:
“The 1962 Le Mans class-winning Morgan Plus 4 holds a special place in the hearts of Morgan enthusiasts, employees and owners around the world. It marked one of Morgan’s greatest motorsport achievements, the car covering more than 2,200 miles at an average running speed of almost 94mph, and triumphing – like David vs Goliath – over our bigger, and better funded, rivals of the time.
“With the Morgan Plus Four LM62, we pay homage to this famous vehicle and incredible moment in time, 60 years on. Limited to just 62 individually numbered examples, the bespoke touches and enhanced level of standard specification make these cars an enticing proposition for customers wanting a piece of Morgan history.”

The Plus Four LM62 is available from Morgan Dealers globally, in left- or right-hand drive, and with the choice of a manual or automatic transmission, the Plus Four LM62 is on sale now. In the UK, it’s priced from £78,995.

Paul Browne is named new Chairman of DHF

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced that its new Chairman is former ASSA ABLOY UK’s Chief Technology Officer & Business Development Director, Paul Browne.

Paul has been involved with DHF since 2006, when the issue of cylinder snapping illustrated the importance of constantly driving up product performance standards to meet the changing needs of end-users.  He has been on the DHF Board since 2007, and in 2011, joined the Board of the European Hardware Association – ARGE – and was active in both European and UK standards development over the nine years that followed.

In his early career, Paul joined the Lucas Graduate scheme in the late 70s after leaving Aston University with a Business Studies degree.  He worked for 17 years at Creda, the UK’s leading manufacturer of white goods, mainly in marketing roles and, finally, as General Manager of the Contracts Division.

After two years in the construction industry, where he gained an invaluable insight into the need for change, Paul joined ASSA ABLOY UK as Marketing Director.  There followed a number of different roles, such as General Manager of the Residential Division, before moving to senior board roles over a 21-year period.

Announcing the new position this month, DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry, said:
“Paul recognises the power of driving standards for the benefit of end users, DHF members and the industry overall and understands that huge opportunities that can be unlocked from the UK post-Brexit standardisation landscape and the need to change building regulations following the Grenfell disaster.  I have known Paul for more than 20 years having worked alongside him at ASSA ABLOY, and I very much look forward to sharing his drive and enthusiasm in continuing the development of DHF.”

David Whitworth

Paul replaces long-standing Chairman, David Whitworth, in his position since 2007 and having played a major role in guiding DHF through its significant development programme over the past 10 years.

In 2002, David became chairman of the Association of Building Hardware Manufacturers (ABHM) and was the driving force behind its 2004 merger with the Door & Shutter Manufacturers’ Association (DSMA) to form DHF.

David is also stepping down as Chairman of the Building Hardware Group.

“David has been chairman of the DHF Building Hardware Group for many years,” says Bob.
“His knowledge of building hardware is unparalleled having started in the family architectural ironmongery business, Laidlaw & Thomson, in 1955.  He has also been chairman of the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers and President of ARGE.
“David continues to be active in the building hardware industry primarily through his ownership of Access 2, a company specialising in security cylinders.  We thank David for the outstanding contribution that he has made, both to DHF and to the building hardware industry as a whole.  I am particularly pleased that David had agreed to continue as a director on the DHF Board.”
Paul Browne comments:
“David has an unrivalled history of achievement and active involvement in our industry. With Bob Perry and the team, he has helped steer DHF in becoming the forward-looking and capable association that it has become today, and it is a privilege to pick up the mantle from him.
“Through making DHF the foremost industry authority, I believe it can lead the drive for change and improvement, creating opportunities and commercial benefit for our members, and I very much look forward to being a part of what will undoubtedly be an exciting future for the federation.”

DHF represents all the key players in the following sectors: locks and building hardware, doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, domestic garage doors and automated gates.

With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service. They all operate within a Code of Conduct governing standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety, business integrity and CE marking compliance.

Triple Challenge for New MD

It’s a triple crown for Steve Marshall who has not only taken over as Managing Director of Strand Hardware, but also its two sister companies – Strand Technologies and AliMet Fabrications.

The industry stalwart has taken the helm of the three Midlands companies following a 24-year career at GEZE UK where, for the past two years he served as Operations Director, following roles in the service and commercial teams.

However, his new challenge has taken him full circle – he began his career as an estimator for an
aluminium door and window fabrication company (James Gibbons) before moving into the world of automatics (Newman Tonks followed by Horton Automatics).

Steve’s appointment is a significant step change for Strand Hardware and demonstrates a resounding belief in his abilities. It will be the first time that the company has seen day-to-day operations managed by someone outside the family-run firm.

Strand was founded by Jonathan Franks in 1991 and his daughter, Catherine, took on the role of Managing Director in 2005. She will continue to help steer the ship in her new role as Chair of Strand Hardware.
Said Steve: “It is such an exciting challenge. They are three fairly different companies which at the same time complement each other. My work at GEZE UK has given me a background in door hardware, albeit that Strand Hardware has a different range of specialist products, but I know a lot of people in the industry that are customers of Strand already.
“GEZE also distributed iContact which is a pivotal product within the Strand Technologies range.   Although a relatively new company, Strand Technologies is going from strength to strength and diversifying into many new markets outside the door industry.
“I began my career with a door and window fabrications company, so AliMet’s business is not unknown to me either. All three are really, really exciting, and I'm looking forward to working with the teams, helping them develop and achieve further growth.”
He says he intends to spend his first 100 days ‘learning and planning’ - getting to know the teams, existing customers, market segments and identify opportunities for growth, development and diversification.

Steve will be supported at Strand Hardware by Sales Director Craig Fox and General Manager Jo Wallis in managing the day-to-day business operations.

Catherine Franks is to focus on special projects, strategy and investments. She said she felt certain that Strand Hardware and its sister companies were in “a safe pair of hands”.
“I would not move aside, if it were not for the certainty that Steve is absolutely the right person for the job. Managing three companies is not easy, each has its own unique demands but Steve has huge amounts of experience working within complex working environments and to time-sensitive deadlines. I feel confident that he will be able to support all three companies and help them grow.”
