Allan Brothers raises the profile of timber windows and doors at major UK homebuilders’ show

Timber window and door manufacturer Allan Brothers has launched its latest campaign to promote wooden products at the National Home Building & Renovating Show.

The Birmingham NEC show was the first of three national exhibitions Allan Brothers will attend this year as the timber specialist continues its major push towards the consumer market.

Allan Brothers’ Sales Director Mark Wiltshire, who attended last month’s show, said:
“We’re thrilled with the success of our bespoke new stand. It’s sleek yet simple and really shows off the timber windows and doors we offer.”
The contemporary stand displays a range of functioning products, including traditional sliding sash windows and French doors, as well as the more modern-styled casement windows and slide and lift patio doors.

The Allan Brothers’ stand not only presents the various style and finish options available, but also highlights the environmental benefits of installing its timber products.

This is the second year in a row the Berwick-based company has exhibited at the annual 4-day show, which this year welcomed around 27 thousand visitors.
“Our team spent around 32 hours manning the stand at the event,” Mr Wiltshire added. “It was a great success for us: we distributed almost a thousand brochures, recorded details of a significant number of quotes to follow up on, but best of all we took orders direct from the show.”
Allan Brothers will exhibit at September’s National Home Improvement show in London, as well as at the Northern Homebuilding & Renovating Show in Harrogate in November.

Essex plays host to the inaugural Warren Classic & Concours event on Saturday, May 4

On Saturday, May 4, the quiet Essex hamlet of Woodham Walter will be the destination of choice for classic car owners, collectors and enthusiasts alike as a major new classic car event, the 2013 Warren Classic & Concours, gets underway.

This new, one-day event, uniquely-staged amidst the tranquil, 350-acre scenic estate of the long-established Warren Golf and Country Club in Woodham Walter, near Maldon, has been created by an international team who draw on many years of collective knowledge and experience of the classic car community.

Partnered by a distinguished group of major companies and brands, the Warren Classic & Concours will mirror the breadth and diversity of classic and collector motorcars, with a wide array of exhibitors and motor clubs, bonded by their common enthusiasm for classic motoring culture.

Special features will celebrate, amongst others, the 50th anniversary year of iconic cars and marques including the Porsche 911 and Italian supercar maker, Lamborghini, plus the centenary year of Aston Martin.

The event will also host the 2013 Warren Concours, a superb tribute to the finest of the classic car genre spanning ten decades, through to the might of contemporary supercars.

Interest in participating in the Concours has been exceptional, providing a tough task for the Warren Concours selection committee to whittle numbers down to the eventual fine selection of 100 vehicles across ten different classes.

Fine examples from the dawn of motoring, through the 1919-1930 vintage period, post-war touring cars and the 50’s and 60’s, will rub shoulders with categories celebrating the anniversary marques and supercars.

Besides being a haven for the devout owners and followers of classics, the Warren Classic & Concours is designed to deliver wide appeal.

Illustrating the point, the organisers have confirmed a thrilling aerial display by the spectacular Blades aerobatic display team during the afternoon, piloted by former RAF Red Arrows pilots, who put the ‘planes through their paces with superb precision under loads as high as 10g.

Tony Stanton, Managing Director of the event venue, The Warren Golf & Country Club, commented:
“We are thrilled to bring this superb event to The Warren, in the interests of both our local community and the enormous following for classic cars. A tremendous array of cars and great entertainment in a spectacular setting in Essex …what could be better?”

Gates open to the Warren Classic & Concours on the morning of Saturday, May 4, with entry for classic car owners at £25.00 per car, privilege parking in a dedicated area, plus an invitation to enter a novel ‘Car Park Concours’. Public entrance tickets on the day are £10 adults, £5 children, and £25 for a family of four, again with free parking.

The venue is easily accessible, just minutes from Maldon and eight miles east of Chelmsford in the picturesque village of Woodham Walter, Essex, CM9 6RW.

Tickets can be purchased on the day or in advance at the event website, www.warrenclassic.co.uk which also has full information for visitors, or call 01245 223258 ; e-mail: info@warrenclassic.co.uk

The Warren Classic & Concours is supported by Classic & Sports Car magazine, in collaboration with Bonhams, EFG International, Fredericke Constant, Hagerty and Hastings Direct.

Important Update About SWS Battery Back Up

Following on from the launch of the SeceuroSense system SWS UK have found it necessary to make some important changes when using the SeceuroSense system with a battery back up.

Any SeceuroGlide Garage Door fitted with the SeceuroSense system with a guide height of 2500mm or less using a battery back up must also be fitted with a box lid this enables the remote controls anti entrapment feature to be switched off.

Doors above 2500mm will not require a box lid but the anti entrapment feature will still need to be switched off to allow the battery back up to operate.

If the above instance applies to a new or existing door a box lid is mandatory to comply with the Construction Product Directive. The new 45 degree box cover or full box are both acceptable solutions to ensure compliance with the directive. This is only applicable when a battery back up is fitted.
For further details please contact your SWS account manager on 01524-772400

European burglar resistance accreditation for Exova

The Willenhall laboratory operated by global testing leader Exova is among the first in the UK to be accredited to key European burglar resistance standards by UKAS, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service.

The EN1627-1630 standards feature mechanical loading, impacting and manual attack, and while the manner of testing may appear initially to be similar to the current UK standard PAS24:2012, six levels of increasing ‘resistance class’ (RC) cover a higher level.

The standards cover a level of commercial or industrial security product where the potential rewards for the burglar are much greater.

While products classed as RC1 must resist manual burglary attempts for one minute with small tools such as screwdrivers, pliers and knives, products classified at the highest level RC6 must resist a prolonged, 20 minute attack using power tools such as angle grinders, electric drills and jigsaws.

For security windows, test evidence to EN1627-1630 RC2 can be used in place of the old British Standard BS7950 for compliance with Secured by Design police initiative.

The requirement for doorsets is a minimum of EN1627-1630 RC3, although the client will still be required to carry out the PAS24:2012 Annex A security hardware test in addition, as this attack method is not assessed in EN1627-1630.

Mark West, operations manager for security products certification at Exova Warrington Certification, said:
“Testing to these new accreditations will allow free trade for UK clients to sell their products into the European market under a recognised EN standard, and at the same time allows European companies with existing security test evidence to achieve the police-backed Secured by Design accreditation without costly full retesting to UK standards.”

About Exova

Exova is the world’s leading dedicated testing group, trusted by organisations to test and advise on the safety, quality and performance of their products and operations.

Exova’s capabilities help to extend asset life, brings predictability to applications, and shortens the time to market for clients’ products, processes and materials.

Why the architect will benefit from specifying doorsets

When it comes to specifying doors, the architect has to make a choice. Should he choose a ready made doorset, or ought he instead decide a door assembly should be made up on site from individual components? In this article, the Door & Hardware Federation outlines the benefits of choosing the complete doorset.

To start with, let us define what is meant by a doorset. It is a complete unit, designed and engineered to meet specific performance requirements, and is manufactured to exacting and consistent standards. It is usually delivered to site as a completely pre-assembled unit for installation into the building, A door assembly, however, comprises constituent parts from various sources that are assembled on site to make up the finished door.

So what are the benefits of the completed doorset compared to on-site fabrication? A doorset comes complete with straightforward and unambiguous documentation. This enables the specifier to determine the performance requirements for an intended application, so ensuring he chooses the right doorset for the purpose.

It gives the specifier vital assurance on quality control. The doorset supplier has complete control over the quality and compatibility of all individual components and materials comprising the completed doorset. This ensures the product delivers dependable and consistent performance standards. It also gives the guarantee that the doorset supplier alone is responsible and accountable for the performance of the entire doorset.

Choosing a completed doorset offers the specifier many other benefits, too:

  • Factory preparation of the doorset ensure more accurate, speedy and precise installation on-site
  • Doorsets reduce the potential for on-site health and safety issues concerning assembly and door ironmongery preparation
  • The specifier, client and contractor benefit from economies in the supply chain thanks to fewer purchasing transactions
  • Pre-assembled doorsets mean there is less chance of loss or pilferage on site
  • Specifying a doorset is the “green” option for specifiers - much less waste is generated on-site when compared to on-site fabrication of individual door assemblies.

The Door and Hardware Federation has long championed the benefits of doorsets. Specifying doorsets from DHF members gives the architect the added benefit that members adhere to the compulsory minimum standards of capability, customer service and quality which are a compulsory condition of DHF membership.

Architects face another consideration when choosing doorsets. From July 2013, when the new Construction Products Regulation comes into being, CE marking will start to become compulsory. A doorset cannot be placed on the market without a CE mark if it is covered by a harmonised standard. (Where the harmonised standard has not yet been published, CE marking will become compulsory at a later date, possibly a year or more after 2013).

Only a pre-assembled doorset comprising all the necessary constituent parts from a single supplier can be CE marked (It can still be CE marked if it is delivered in the form of a factory-prepared kit ready for assembly with simple tools on site). It cannot be CE marked, however, if the parts come from more than one source or if not all parts are included, or if assembly involves more complex construction methods on site.

Sources of further help for the architect and specifier:

  •  The DHF presentation on CE marking and its specific application to doorsets is currently being presented to RIBA member architects around the country under the RIBA Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme.

BRITAIN’S FIRST 100MPH CAR CELEBRATES CENTENARY

Iconic 30-98 model underpins Vauxhall’s tradition of sporting excellence

  • Vauxhall 30-98 direct rival to sporting Bentleys during 1920s
  •  Fast, durable and lightweight – top speed validated by factory at Brooklands
  •  Enduring example of early 1900s’ engineering – nearly 200 cars survive today

The Vauxhall 30-98, one of the greatest sports cars of the twentieth century and the first to top 100mph in production form, is marking its centenary in style this May, when almost 50 surviving examples attempt the Waddington Fell hillclimb, site of the car’s first appearance and competition success in 1913.

Described as ‘The car of grace that sets the pace’, the 30-98 was derived from Vauxhall’s C10 ‘Prince Henry’ – acknowledged as the UK’s first real sports car – and was produced at a time when Vauxhall vied with Bentley in the prestige car market.

But armed with a kerb weight 400kgs less than a Bentley 3.0-Litre, a powerful engine and high axle ratio, the 30-98 became renowned as a high-performance car that could swallow long distances with ease. This made it particularly popular with drivers in the colonies, and explains why so many cars still survive in Australia today.

A precursor to the recently launched Cascada convertible, the 30-98 was actually developed in just 71 days, but went on to spawn a production run of 600 cars over a 14 year period (with a break for WW1). Remarkably, around a third of these cars still survive today.

At a time when car manufacturers promoted the performance, durability and handling of their products through competition, Vauxhall had already been successful in hillclimbs, grands prix and endurance trials since the company was formed in 1903 (now celebrating its 110th anniversary, it’s the UK’s oldest surviving car brand).

And the 30-98 represented the zenith of those achievements. On its first outing at the Waddington Fell hill climb in Lancashire, it set fastest time of the day, proving to the car’s designer, Laurence Pomeroy, and Vauxhall’s directors, Percy Kidner and Leslie Walton, that the car had a future, and production started in earnest.

Originally fitted with a 4,525cc side-valve four cylinder engine, producing 90bhp, the model was made in two basic types: E-type and OE-type, with the latter denoting the more powerful overhead valve cars producing 112bhp, and built between 1923 and 1927.

And it was the OE-type that became the first production car to exceed 100mph, partly prompted by a letter to The Autocar’s editor from a Major L.Ropner, complaining that he was unable to buy a road car that could cover a flying mile at more than 100mph!

Vauxhall responded by producing a stunning two-seater 30-98 for him in polished aluminium, with a full set of road equipment. On March 28, 1923 factory test driver Matt Park took the car to Brooklands and achieved a flying lap at 100.7mph, before delivering the car to Ropner, who used it extensively for competition, continental touring and commuting to London from his home in Yorkshire.

The British motoring press fell in love with the OE-Type 30-98, and in 1923 The Autocar subjected one to an early road test, recording a maximum speed (with standard Velox body and wind-breaking full windscreen) of 82.57mph – no mean feat at a time when most cars were struggling to top 50mph.

The Autocar went on to say: ‘Few cars have such graceful lines yet at once suggest unlimited strength allied to speed…and very, very few can take a corner stiffly with absolute certainty as this one can.’

This year, Vauxhall Motors’ own 1926 OE-Type Velox Tourer (OE268) will join around 50 other 30-98s in Lancashire to celebrate the model’s competition debut at Waddington Fell. Working with the Vauxhall 30-98 Register, local authorities have closed the public road which used to form the course, allowing cars from as far afield as Australia and the US to recreate Higginson’s winning run.

Other events which Vauxhall is supporting as part of the 30-98 centenary include:

•Brooklands Double Twelve (June 15-16)

• The 30-98 Centenary Run (July 5) – Tour starting at Brooklands and travelling to Vauxhall’s Luton HQ and then on to Millbrook Proving Ground with up to 100 30-98s

• CarFest North, Oulton Park (August 2-4)

• CarFest South, Laverstoke Park (August 23-25)

• ‘Thirsty Down Under’ Tour (Oct/Nov) – a three-week tour of Victoria and Tasmania for the thriving 30-98 Register based in Australia

Goodwood has yet to confirm entry of the 30-98 in its centenary year at the Festival of Speed.
