Installers Flock to JDUK For Monumental Launch Open Days

After an exciting build up that became the talk of the industry, fuelled by a series of YouTube teaser videos, interest in JDUK’s big news reached boiling point on Tuesday 19th July, and not just because of the record-breaking heatwave!

In spite of it, over 50 installers turned out to the first in a series of six open days, which were attended by over 200 people overall. The eagerly awaited open days were held at JDUK’s updated showroom in West Yorkshire to an overwhelming response, with installers keen to find out how JDUK’s new sectional garage door would match up to those previously supplied. And they were not disappointed.

JDUK MD, Steve Hudson, assured customers the new products would be as good, if not better, than anything currently on offer in the UK market. And that was certainly proven to be the case with Unipro sectional garage door from Wisniowski, which offers side springs on doors even wider than before up to 5000mm, requires less headroom of just 80mm including the tolerance required for automation, and has a better U-value of just 0.48 W/m2K.

After an introduction by Steve, where he revealed new supplier Wisniowski, the curtain was finally lifted, quite literally thanks to Adrian from AR Barber, on the new sectional garage door and other new products. Attendees were able to see them first hand and were quick to appreciate their beauty and benefits.

Jeff Darlington from DGD Garage Doors commented,
“We were impressed with it. In our opinion it is a far superior door than most others on the market and means we can still carry on with JDUK as we have for the past 7 years.”
Special features of the Unipro sectional that delighted installers included a unique header/fascia, which has been designed specifically for the UK, to provide rigidity and strength for in-between and under installation. They were also impressed by the colour matched profiles and matching foiled profiles provided as standard. The exclusive Home Inclusive colour range of other matching products, such as aluminium entrance doors, also captured imagination.

The new range of aluminium doors from JDUK, produced by Wisniowski, were another highlight of the open day events and impressed installers with their stunning appearance. On display was a luxury Creo entrance door in a special modern black matt finish, with 3-point Autotronic locking and a Deco Light entrance door in a Modern graphite finish from the Home Inclusive range, also with 3-point Autotronic locking.

Steve also announced Gimenez Ganga as the new supplier for roller door components to JDUK, highlighting thicker material included in the hood and lath for additional rigidity, as well as a new type of end plate and guide roller assembly, leading to smoother operation.

Of particular interest though were the new range of insulated side-hinged garage doors from Wisniowski that JDUK have introduced to the UK market. There were 3 such doors displayed in the showroom, two DoorPro 45, one in anthracite grey and one in the increasingly popular Agate grey, and a DoorPro 60 in anthracite grey, where the number refers to the size of the profile.

Steve concluded by saying,
“We’d like to thank all who attended our very successful open days for their support and enthusiasm. We had some fantastic feedback and ordering levels are already better than expected, which shows the confidence our customers have in our new products and suppliers.”
If you weren’t able to attend, you can watch the highlights in the video above or directly on YouTube

Alternatively, please contact JDUK to arrange a visit by calling 01924 472924 or email sales@jdukltd.co.uk. Visit www.jdukltd.co.uk for more information.

Trio of New Fire Rated Door Sets launched by Promat UK

Promat timber fire doors, which are tested as a complete assembly to provide assured protection in the event of a fire.

Passive fire protection systems specialist Promat UK has developed two new steel framed glazed door systems and a timber door set to provide specifiers with assured fire safety solutions in domestic, public and commercial buildings.

All three door sets are available in EI30 or EI60 specifications, which means they will retain their integrity and provide effective insulation to protect people and assets in the event of a fire for either 30 or 60 minutes.

The new steel frame doors, PYROSEC Door and PYROSEC SLIMLITE, allow fire doors to be integrated into fire resistance screens and partitions with ease – maximising light transmission and vision without compromising safety.

Both are designed to integrate with the Promat SYSTEMGLAS Ferro fire-resistant glazing system, which provides architects and specifiers with a complete glazing solution backed by third-party test evidence and Promat’s 360-degree ‘Wheel of Assurance’.

The new PYROSEC SLIMLITE door, is a steel-framed fire-rated fire door which maximises glazing potential without compromising fire safety.

PYROSEC Door provides strong aesthetic appeal with large vision panels. It is available in a single or double leaf configuration, with minimal stainless steel frame members and compatibility with a full complement of over panels and side screens that allow for clear butt joint glazing.

For those applications where a slimmer frame is sought, PYROSEC SLIMLITE will meet the brief. The glass area is maximised thanks to a super-slim 20mm frame section, 25mm stiles and 90mm rails, making it one of the most slimline fire-rated doors available in the UK.

The third new fire door from Promat, a timber door set, offers the same fire resistance as the two PYROSEC options for applications where a traditional timber solution is required. It integrates seamlessly with the Promat SYSTEMGLAS Ligna glazing system, which is widely used in all kinds of traditional and contemporary interiors.

The new fire-rated door sets, along with the complete SYSTEMGLAS range, can be fitted by Promat-approved installers, which ensures the company can provide clients with complete traceability of the installed product.

Key to the ‘golden thread’ approach being adopted by the construction industry more broadly, this means Promat can provide a post-installation certificate of conformity because it is in control of the whole supply process, from raw material sourcing, design and manufacture to installation.

Cath McLean, Segment Manager – Glass at Promat UK said:
“As the annual Fire Door Safety Week once again shines a light on why we can never become complacent about fire safety in new build and refurbishment projects, we are delighted to be able to be launching these three new door sets at this time.
“With no margin for error when it comes to the design and installation of passive fire protection products, it is important that specifiers and installers have access to the systems they can depend on. That’s why we invest in creating fully tested complete systems which ensure risk is minimised at all points in the supply chain – ultimately providing peace of mind for clients and the end-users of buildings.”

To find out more about Promat SYSTEMGLAS and the latest new fire-rated door sets, email promatuk@etexgroup.com or call 0800 588 4444.

Warringtonfire marks 50 years of ‘making tomorrow safer than today’

1972 Completed Lab

Warringtonfire is marking the 50th anniversary of its first commercial fire test, which took place at a newly completed fire testing laboratory in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in the summer of 1972.

50 years later, what is believed to be the UK’s oldest existing fire resistance testing laboratory, continues to operate. Today, it is one of Warringtonfire’s main sites and is a centre of excellence for the testing of timber fire doors.

In addition to being an early pioneer in fire testing, Warringtonfire has remained at the forefront of the industry. Through its collaboration with trade associations and standards committees, Warringtonfire’s team of highly respected technical experts continue to play a pivotal role in raising standards in the fire protection industry.

Recognising how much customers rely on specialist technical knowledge to support them through the testing process, Warringtonfire has continued to invest heavily in building a world-class team of technical experts and has one of the largest global teams in the industry.

1972 - DoE Trada home improvement project

Mark Cummings, Technical Director at Warringtonfire, said:
“Since 1972, we’ve conducted tens of thousands of fire tests at our High Wycombe laboratory, all designed to ensure that the products our customers develop are safe, compliant and fit for purpose. It never ceases to amaze me that many of the products that we all walk past every day, in offices, airports, schools or hospitals, will have been developed and tested at our facility at High Wycombe and we’re extremely proud of our work.”
He continues: “However, we’re not resting on our laurels and with the significant changes we’re seeing in the built environment landscape today, we know there’s much to do if we are to continue to deliver on our purpose of making tomorrow safer than today. Our focus for the future is to continue working with key trade associations and standards committees using the deep technical expertise we possess, particularly of those colleagues in our Scope and Governance team, to constantly raise industry standards.
“Alongside this, our people are critical to our success – they always have been. We will continue to invest in our people, developing the careers of both our existing colleagues through initiatives such as our Ignite programme as well as bringing in new talent through our Graduate Intake Scheme.”

Although Warringtonfire’s High Wycombe laboratory specialises in the testing of timber fire doors, over the years it has also tested many unusual products. These include the front end of a train as well as an eco-development of a straw bale house.

As well as 50 years of fire testing at High Wycombe, this year also marks two further significant milestones. It is 25 years since the introduction of sister company BM TRADA’s Q-Mark third-party certification scheme, and 30 years since the inception of the Warringtonfire Certifire scheme. Both have played a critical role in raising standards of fire protection in the built environment and today are widely recognised, respected and specified by end users across the globe.
“We have come a long way since our first ever test at this site, and the products that our customers have developed and tested at our facility have undoubtedly had a positive impact on the built environment,” said Mr Cummings. “It is a great foundation on which to build on and to enable us to continue to make tomorrow safer than today over the next 50 years.”
To give back to the industry that it has been a part of for the last 50 years, Peter Barker – Technical Manager at Warringtonfire will be hosting a free 2-hour “Introduction to Fire Doors” webinar on Wednesday 12th October.

For full details visit www.warringtonfire.com.

New Insulated Side-Hinged Garage Door from JDUK

Innovative garage door supplier, JDUK, is offering installers more choice than ever before, by adding insulated side-hinged garage doors to its range, produced by trend-setting Polish manufacturer, Wisniowski (pronounced vish - noff -ski).

This is just one of many new products the West Yorkshire distributor has recently launched which means installers can now source more of the products they need from one place. (See page 6 of the Summer 2022 Door Industry Journal for the official announcement)

The DoorPro series of insulated side hinged garage doors are available as a single or double leaf, DoorPro 45, 60, 70 and 70RC, which refers to the size of the aluminium profiles, with the option of a thermal break on DoorPro 60, 70 and 70RC. Choose from five-panel designs, L Ribbed, M Ribbed, S Ribbed, Georgian and Microwave. Both horizontal and vertical ribbed designs are available.

The door leaf infill is insulated with environmentally friendly CFC-free polyurethane foam for high thermal efficiency. The door leaf chassis and door frame are made from an aluminium profile with rebated seals along the entire perimeter of the door leaf and frame for optimum weather tightness. Both the frame of the door leaf and the frame itself are powder coated in any RAL the homeowner desires.

The DoorPro 45 series comes with three-point locking, anti-burglary bolting and a stainless-steel handle as standard, with the option of an SKG2 security cylinder lock. Doors can be ordered of equal width (symmetrical distribution) or with a smaller traffic leaf (asymmetrical distribution) ideal for pedestrian passage, with the option to open outwards or inwards, and from the right or left for single leaf doors. Outward opening maximises the usable space within the garage and inwards is more suited to where the outdoor area in front of the garage is limited.

Doors are available in 34 colours standard RAL colours, the largest range available in the UK, with a choice of 4 attractive textures comprising Woodgrain, Smooth, Sandgrain and Smoothgrain. Over 40 laminated/foiled finishes are also available, including wood effects and coloured. These doors can be suited with matching products as part of the Home Inclusive 2.0 range.

Hold the Keys to Turning Back Time with a better-than-new 1953 Jaguar XK120

Leading specialists in the sales and servicing of classic and prestige vehicles, Hilton & Moss, offer a lucky Jaguar-lover the chance to wind back the clock and experience the roar of an iconic 1950s sportscar with a near-perfect 1953 Jaguar XK120.

A whisker under the ripe old age of 70, the big cat doesn’t look a day older than the brand new, 75,000 sq/ft Hilton & Moss facility that it has been prepared in, having been treated to a comprehensive restoration – after which the car has only travelled 335 miles under its own power.

Offering a transfixing glimpse into the glamour of the British sportscar’s heyday, the XK120 is a glowing testament to the revolutionary engineering that saw it claim the title of ‘fastest car in the world’ upon its global debut in 1948.

The beautiful sportscar may have been designed to tear up the roads to the tune of its soulful straight-six engine, but it didn’t take long to make an impact on the world of road-racing. Marking Jaguar’s first foray into the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1950, the XK120 laid the groundwork for the XK120-C – otherwise known as the C-Type – to earn Jaguar’s first ever win at the prestigious motor race just a year later.

Imbued with the spirit of the biggest prize in motorsport, Hilton & Moss’ example of the XK120 was produced in the same year as another win for the XK120-C at Le Mans in 1953 – already boasting a historic legacy in just the sixth year of the model’s existence.

The XK120 began its life in the USA as a left-hand drive example finished in Pastel Blue, before making its way back home to the UK – where it was destined for a no-expenses-spared approach to preserving its lustre and race-winning dynamics.

Immaculately restored from tyre treads to windscreen, the vehicle was professionally converted to right-hand drive and treated to an extensive powertrain upgrade. The snarling 3.4-litre straight-six engine was bored out and modified to deliver engaging performance on the open road – power and pull delivered in every gear courtesy of a new five-speed transmission.

Drivers can also channel the confidence of the racers who tackled the infamous Le Mans circuit in years gone by with state-of-the-art disc brakes on all four corners of the car, making it a pure joy to drive whether on a laid-back grand tour or rip-roaring road rally.

The Hilton Group Founder, Peter Hilton, said:
“At Hilton & Moss, we have the pleasure of offering some incredibly special vehicles for new owners to enjoy. However, bringing one of the most storied sportscars in history – a true forefather of modern motoring performance – to our sales showroom is a true honour.
“The Jaguar XK120 is where the British marque’s modern motorsport story truly began, and it redefined the performance and enjoyment that motor vehicles could offer on the road.
“We’re excited to see the reaction of a discerning Jaguar-lover looking for their perfect driving companion when they take it home!”

Additional detail on the Jaguar XK120 can be found on the listing page here, with further information on the Hilton & Moss business available here.

Pyramid Aluminium launch new pre-fitted Bi-fold Sill

In the latest feature to help make installers’ lives easier, the SlimFold bi-fold door from Pyramid Aluminium now features a pre-fitted sill.

Factory fitted directly to the outer frame, the sill saves both time on installation and allows for a larger glass area, benefitting both installers and homeowners.

Paul Bailey, Managing Director at Pyramid Aluminium said:
“There are various features of the new SlimFold which make the lives of installers easier, and the pre-fitted sill plays a big part in that.
“It seems like a small feature, but for busy installers it saves them so much time. We factory fit the sill onto the frame, meaning there’s no need for the timely process of using silicone to fix the sill to the door. They can install it as one unit, saving them valuable time on site for an effortless installation. The sill also features a handy hidden drainage system to improve performance.
“By fitting the sill directly to the outer frame, it not only saves time on installation, but it also allows for an extra 30mm of glass, helping homeowners maximise their views and the light coming into their home.
“Along with the easy-click glazing bead, 100mm sightlines and building regulation compliance, SlimFold continues to prove its worth as one of the most complete aluminium bi-fold systems on the market, improving the lives of both homeowners and installers.”

Ahmarra Door Solutions host Secured by Design

One of the UK’s leading performance doorset manufacturers, Ahmarra Door Solutions, welcomed Secured by Design’s Lyn Poole to their Fire Door manufacturing facility in Havant last week, with Ahmarra’s Marketing & Compliance Manager Vicki Boulton giving Lyn a tour of the factory.

The majority of Ahmarra’s work is for large-scale, new build construction projects for schools, hospitals, airports, hotels, luxury homes, social housing and commercial properties.

Ahmarra has dual certification compliance for both fire and security on their range of SBD accredited internal apartment entrance doorsets, providing peace of mind that the people, property and assets within the building are protected from opportunist thieves, vandalism, attack, fire and smoke.

Lyn Poole said:
“It was great to finally catch up with Vicki at the Ahmarra factory in Havant. They have been there a year but because of covid this is the first opportunity I have had to visit them there.
“The new factory is fantastic, airy, modern, well organised and full of up-to-date technical equipment, allowing people to utilise their skills more efficiently, with the increased amount of completed doorsets being the proof.
“I would like to thank Vicki and the team at Ahmarra for accommodating my visit during their busy working day, giving me a great insight into how the new factory is helping them maintain the high standards that Ahmarra doorsets are known for.”

Vicki Boulton, from Ahmarra Door Solutions, said:
“Ahmarra are pleased to have had a long association with Secured by Design. Our doorsets, that are produced under the Secured by Design scheme, are available with dual Q-Mark Enhanced Security Door and Q-Fire Door Manufacture certification, and are PAS24:2016 compliant.
“We’ve manufactured and installed 1000’s of internal entrance doors for council-led social housing projects and for high-end luxury apartments over recent years. It was great to be able to show Lyn around our new production facility and explain more about our manufacturing process and design options we offer.”

Hörmann Glazed Section Doors light up high-end Garage Project

With a number of luxury cars and motorbikes to house, an impressive new-build garage project in the West Midlands is all the more striking with the inclusion of fully glazed ART42 sectional garage doors from Hörmann UK.

Chosen for their modern design aesthetic and German build quality the doors were specified and installed by Birmingham based Doorfit.

The double-storey garage, which includes a home office and gym on the first floor, is fitted with three, 2.5m wide x 2m high, fully automated ART42 sectional doors.

Constructed from a lightweight, yet strong, aluminium framework the three doors include narrow framed, large clear glazing panels featuring the unique Hörmann DURATEC scratch-resistance finish.

An innovative surface coating, DURATEC protects the glazing panes from scratches and damage caused by cleaning over the long-term, helping to guarantee a permanently flawless appearance.

Finished in a smooth, modern Anthracite grey the three doors complement the other materials used and complete an impressive building ideal for displaying the clients’ extensive vehicle collection and offering a bright unimpeded view.

Commenting on the installation, David Close from Doorfit says,
“Having listened to our clients’ aspirations and specific requirements we immediately knew that the Hörmann ART42 glazed sectional doors would be the perfect choice and would provide the ideal visual solution.

The combination of functionality and aesthetics were exactly what was required, with the comforting reassurance of quality that comes with a premium brand such as Hörmann.

This was certainly a unique project to work on and the end results are amazing, testament to the partnership between Hörmann and Doorfit, a quality product backed up with a quality service”.
Hörmann ART42 sectional doors are available with a selection of infill panels, including a range of coloured glazed options, textured and steel perforated panels, offering the opportunity to create unique and stylish garage doors.

Sentry Doors buys E & S W Knowles, expanding its markets

Sentry Doors Limited (Sentry) is pleased to announce its acquisition of E. & S. W. Knowles & Company Limited (Knowles), accelerating its growth and creating the UK’s leader in timber fire safety and security doorsets.

Established in 1923, E. & S. W. Knowles manufactures specialist timber internal doorsets with fire-rated, acoustic and PAS 24 security certification. Operating nationally from a 50,000-square-foot facility in Birmingham, Knowles offers bespoke, sector-specific solutions that meet the exacting requirements of its commercial, healthcare, education and leisure customers.

Its commitment to regulatory compliance and high manufacturing standards has resulted in independent third-party accreditations from both IFC and BM Trada1. Knowles employs approximately 100 people and in 2021, achieved revenue of £10m.

This acquisition adds new products that complement Sentry Doors’ well-established product range, focused on the specialist fire doorset requirements of the social housing, public sector, commercial and residential markets.

The combination of these two firms provides both companies with opportunities for further innovation and growth. They share a commitment to manufacturing the highest quality fire safety solutions, and are at the forefront of compliance and regulation but have minimal overlap in the industry sectors that they serve and their respective product ranges.

Both companies will benefit from the possibilities offered by their new market sectors and an expanded range of products and finishes. The enlarged business continues to be headquartered in Doncaster. Steve Horner, Knowles’ Managing Director, will join Sentry’s senior management team, working with Ty Aziz, Sentry’s Chief Executive, to realise the potential that this partnership brings.

Ty Aziz, Sentry’s Chief Executive, said,
“I am delighted to welcome Knowles to Sentry Doors – they have a fantastic manufacturing heritage, an exceptional team and a superb product range so we can learn a lot from one another.
“This partnership will help us to respond to the surge in demand for our products, as well as providing our customers with a fully comprehensive range of fire safety and security solutions, and a greater choice of features and finishes. It marks a key milestone in the growth strategy for our businesses and advances our collective ambition to be UK leaders in this sector.”

Martin Wright, majority owner of Knowles, added,
“Next year Knowles celebrates its centenary and while I am extremely proud of all that we have achieved in the last 99 years, I know that the company has the capability to achieve much more in the future. I believe that this is the natural point for me to pass the company to new, trusted custodians who can deliver on its future potential. Knowles has a perfect partner in Sentry and together, the companies should achieve great things.”
