Magical Taxi Tour takes 100 Children on the Trip of a Lifetime to Disneyland Paris

One of London’s most-loved children’s charity events, the Magical Taxi Tour started its annual journey to Paris on Friday.

Organised by the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers, the event kicked off in the morning with a special breakfast held at East Wintergarden, in Canary Wharf.

Following the breakfast, 93 taxis set off from the capital, taking 100 children and their families and carers to Disneyland Paris for a trip of a lifetime.

The convoy was escorted by the City of London Police and the London Ambulance NHS Trust, with the French Gendarmerie Nationale picking up the route once the procession arrives in France.

Since its inception in 1994, the Magical Taxi Tour has taken more than 5,000 children to Disneyland Resort Paris®. The event is run purely on donations from organisations and as a sign of support for this important charity, Geely Holding Group, owner of the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) has donated £100,000 over five years. Since 2013, LEVC has also donated £230,000 to the charity.

About LEVC

LEVC’s history began in 1908 when the first dedicated black cab was specially designed and commissioned for use in London. With its unmistakable silhouette and classic design cues, this iconic British vehicle has defined the company for over a century. In 2018, LEVC introduced its latest taxi model, the electric TX. TX is world’s cleanest, most advanced taxi ever, powered by LEVC’s revolutionary eCity technology.

LEVC manufactures its purpose-built, range extended electric TX taxi at a state-of-the-art factory in Ansty, Coventry. Since 2014, Geely has invested more than £500m into LEVC, allowing it to build an entirely new eco-friendly manufacturing facility, the UK’s first dedicated to the production of electric vehicles.

In November 2019, LEVC started production of its first non-taxi model with the launch of VN5, a medium-sized electric van. Utilising the same eCity technology as TX, VN5 offers both zero-emission capability and zero range anxiety, a critical combination for commercial vehicle operators.

Beesley & Fildes Invests £1.2 Million in Timber Mill Upgrade

North West based Beesley & Fildes, the family-owned independent builder’s merchant, has invested £1.2 million in its timber milling facility in Widnes in response to increase demand for both timber stock items across the company’s branch network, and bespoke orders.

The timber mill, acquired by Beesley & Fildes in 2004, produces the skirting, architraves, flooring, planed timber, door casings and certified fire door casing kits sold across the company’s 11-branch network and online. It also fulfils bespoke orders from both the branches and customers, including matching legacy timber features and providing like-for-like timber details for heritage projects.

The £1.2 million investment programme is designed to increase efficiency and throughput, enabling Beesley and Fildes to offer reliable and cost-effective supply with full accountability, traceability and quality assurance.

The investment includes two new Weinig planing and profiling lines, which will replace the mill’s existing planing equipment, enabling increased throughput, fast set-up and a consistently excellent finish at the Beesley & Fildes timber mill. The market-leading Weinig P3000 and P1500 machines can be pre-programmed and will store settings for repeat jobs, enhancing efficiency and enabling faster operation with a single operative for each machine.

Paul Causer, Beesley & Fildes’ timber mill manager explains:
“The new Weinig P3000 planing and profiling line will allow us to process up to 120 linear metres of timber per minute – a 600 per cent increase on our existing equipment.
“With lightweight tooling, digital programming, programme storing and pre-set capabilities, it will also be much easier and quieter to run, helping us to optimise resources at the mill and provide an improved work environment for our team, while maintaining high standards of quality and service.”

Also included in the new investment programme is a new, British-made, fully-automated Stenner re-saw that will convert timber for the production of skirting boards, fence panels and feather-edged boarding. Requiring just a single operator, the new re-saw provides Beesley & Fildes with industry-leading re-saw technology, increased capacity and broader in-house processing capabilities to boost supply chain reliability for customers.

Beesley & Fildes has also acquired a small saw from Stenner to replace another legacy machine, providing additional capacity for angle fillets and feather edged timber.

From cross-cutting machine manufacturer, Stromab, Beelsey & Fildes has bought an automated cross-cutting machine (above) that will enhance the range of door casing and certified fire door casing sets the company can offer across its branch network. The machine will be used to produce 12 door casing variants - six different casing widths, with two alternative aperture sizes - along with certified fire door casings that will have a pre-profiled recess for intumescent material.

Investment in all five machines has been coordinated with an upgrade to the mill’s extraction system and tool room, ensuring the facility provides a safe, comfortable and digital-enabled work environment that will futureproof Beesley & Fildes’ timber milling capabilities. The upgrade means that Beesley & Fildes’ experienced timber engineering and processing team will be able to load CAD drawings straight to the new machines and all machines will operate on an integrated digital system that will ensure high levels of accuracy, real-time management information and prioritised workflows.

James Beelsey, commercial director at Beesley & Fildes adds:
“The timber mill at our Widnes branch is an important part of our offer, both in enabling us to stock all our branches and in our ability to produce bespoke items for customers – if it can be made from timber, we can make it!
“This investment programme is all about enhancing our capabilities to prepare for continuing growth and ensure we deliver consistently efficient and accurate timber processing. In addition to the new equipment, we are also recruiting a timber machinist apprentice, investing in the future of our business and our community with an opportunity for a young person to develop skills in the sector.”

Operator in hiding

An automatic swing door operator that is completely hidden from view has been introduced by GEZE UK.

The UFO NT is the new underfloor automatic swing door drive. It boasts a much wider range of capabilities and features than its predecessor including manual use via the Smart swing function.

Providing maximum transparency and meeting aesthetic and access demands the UFO NT is hidden in the floor and so overcomes the problem of a limited area at the top of the door frame, perfect for use with glass facades or listed or historical buildings with structural limitations, or where automatic doors are required but with an operator that is not visible.

The UFO NT can be used on any type of door – glass, wood or metal and is especially suitable for use where vandalism could be a problem as the operator is fully concealed. It is also suitable for retrofitting.

It provides compliance with the demands of the Equality Act and the building standard BS EN 8300.

Developed from the robust and efficient GEZE Powerturn operator the UFO NT has a higher IP rating (IP 67) making it suitable for external doors, and a higher closing force than its predecessor size EN1 - EN4. In addition, it can operate leaf widths up to 1250mm on external doors and 1600mm on internal doors, and leaf weights up to 125kg, surpassing the older unit in all areas of performance.

The Smart swing function enables large doors to be operated manually with ease, though if the door is manually opened at high speed the operator will apply motor resistance to slow it down. Using a redundant spring system, the Smart swing function allows the operator to be fully motor-controlled until power failure or fire alarm activation.

The versatile UFO NT underfloor operator is suitable for use with GEZE Cockpit and building management systems.

Andy Howland, sales and marketing director of GEZE UK, said:
“The aesthetically pleasing UFO NT is perfect for use in all types of buildings. Its versatility as an automatic swing door provides safe, efficient and convenient means of opening and closing a door yet the Smart swing allows it to be used manually with ease, its location in the floor makes for an attractive, unhindered door set.”

To find out more about the UFO NT email info.uk@geze.com or for more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic operators and manual door closers visit www.geze.co.uk.

Provide Optimum WFH Security with ASSA ABLOY Code Handle

The growth of working from home (WFH) following the COVID-19 pandemic poses potential security concerns around unwanted access to confidential company data.

This is easily resolved with Code Handle, the door lock from ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group that keeps private rooms private via the use of a PIN code.

85 percent of employees currently working from home say they would favour a ‘hybrid’ working pattern in the future[i] – a clear indication that WFH is here to stay.

Unsurprisingly, however, many domestic spaces that were repurposed into offices during the pandemic are not equipped to provide the security or privacy that a workplace demands.

Craig Birch, Head of Product Management at the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group, comments:
“With many companies and employees having now turned to a hybrid working model, it is clear that working from home is here for the long term – but it is vital that security is improved alongside this, especially for those employed in sensitive industries. After all, not every houseguest should be reading confidential company data that has been left lying around on a desk.
“This is where Code Handle comes in. It provides an elegant and convenient way to put an effective barrier between the work environment and the rest of the home – ensuring that confidential documents are as secure as they would be in a purpose-built office.”
A sleek and stylish handle with a built-in PIN pad, Code Handle offers a convenient access control solution for those that need to keep home offices private.

Access is granted to authorised individuals via a four- to six-digit code on the handle’s keypad, and the device automatically locks when a door closes for added security and peace of mind.

Unlike other costly access control systems, Code Handle can be quickly and easily installed or retrofitted. It is battery-powered and so requires no expensive wiring.

Users can keep the current cylinder or lock and upgrade almost any interior door to Code Handle by simply securing it in place with two screws, making it easy for non-specialists.
“The security and ease of use of Code Handle has led to it being trusted within medical surgeries, retail stockrooms, flexible workspaces and almost anywhere else a private door meets a public space,” says Craig.
“It is perfectly adapted for upgrading a home study, basement, loft or spare room into an office, as it provides optimum security without the hassle of keys or an unsightly push-button device.”
For more information on Code Handle from ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group, please visit www.assaabloy.com.

Hörmann Dealer Training – book early for next year

With face-to-face training at the Hörmann Academy now back in full swing, the company has announced that it has provided over 424 hours of training in the last six months.

With a comprehensive programme covering one and two-day sessions for both the domestic and industrial markets, Hörmann are already formulating their training schedule for 2023 which will be announced to the market in early Autumn.

Based at their Coalville headquarters, the state-of-the-art Training Academy offers dealers installation training on the complete range of Hörmann garage and entrance doors, along with sales and product sessions.

Industrial partners have access to training on the installation of industrial doors and dock levellers. Booking for all courses is via an online booking site which provides details on each course and available dates.

David O’Mara, Marketing Manager at Hörmann UK comments,
“Training is a key commitment to our dealers and the launch of Training Academy back in 2019 has proved to be extremely popular. During the various lockdowns we moved our emphasis to providing an online solution, which now provides a valuable addition to our in-person training sessions.

Rhino Focuses on the Nuclear Industry with a New Partner

Rhino Doors, the UK’s leading manufacturer of high-performance engineered doors, has signed an agency contract with UniTech Services Group Ltd, based in Crumlin, South Wales.

UniTech will act as Rhino’s agent and represent the company’s comprehensive range of doors, including those designed for radiation protection, to customers working in the nuclear power and military nuclear sectors.

Rhino’s new partner is the UK subsidiary of the worldwide UniTech Services Group Inc., based in Massachusetts, which generates over $100m in turnover and has operations throughout Europe and the US.

UniTech specialises in the decontamination of PPE, tools, equipment and other consumables used in the nuclear industry, as well as offering an as-new reconditioning service, temporary on-site decontamination structures, and ancillary products to assist with decontamination routines.

This new relationship was formed through negotiations between Jon Walter, Managing Director of Rhino Doors, and Paul Chesters, UniTech’s UK Business Manager, which brought into focus the potential of a partnership.

Jon Walter, Managing Director of Rhino Doors said:
“Rhino has supplied doors to the nuclear industry for several years, but we have been looking for the right partner to enable us to grow our presence in the sector.” said Jon Walter, Managing Director of Rhino Doors.
“UniTech is well known and respected in the industry, with almost 100% coverage of all UK nuclear sites and a high-quality service and product offering.

“With high-quality products, a professional approach to design and manufacture, and a strong customer service culture, Rhino Doors is ideally suited to the nuclear sector.
“As well as offering the required radiological protection, the company’s doors are extremely secure and can be supplied in an anti-terrorist format, which is highly relevant in these uncertain times. We are confident of a very fruitful partnership with Rhino.”

Skantrae Doubles the Capacity with a New Door Packaging Line

Packaging and sealing are done in one operation only.

After the installation of a new RoRo StretchPack® door packaging line from Tentoma to replace a heat shrink oven, Skantrae has doubled its packaging capacity. Overtime has been eliminated, while both the working environment and packaging quality have been improved.

With a stock of 120.000 doors and an annual sale of more than 600.000 doors, Skantrae is one of the main distributors of doors in the Netherlands. Skantrae is a Dutch distributor that in recent years has had a growth in sales while it also has taken over some operations from a sister company.

Annual growth in further processing of custom doors on 30-40% led to a capacity problem on the heat shrink packaging line. That was why operations manager Ruud Willemsen and production manager Peter Klomp, who are responsible for the packaging line, started up a project to find a way of optimizing the packaging.

Skantrae is one of the main distributors of doors in in the Netherlands
Peter Klomp tells: “At that time we could only pack 400 to 500 doors each day using the heat shrink tunnel, and that was not sufficient. We needed to pack about 800-900 doors each day, so capacity was the main reason why we were searching for a new packaging solution”.
Ruud Williemsen added: “Actually, we were looking for a new heat shrink oven. Then we came across the RoRo StretchPack® packaging solution from Tentoma, which we immediately could see was suitable for door packaging. We liked the idea of stretching the film to fit the door instead of applying too much film which we afterwards need to put through a heat shrink tunnel”.
During the project, Skantrae had the chance to do other improvements in connection with the packaging line.
Peter Klomp added: “Previously each door was lifted by hand before packaging when mounting cardboard corner protection on the door. That was about 800 lifts each day. On the new packaging line from Tentoma we have a lifting table integrated into the infeed conveyor. When the door is placed on the conveyor, we just push a button to lift the door for mounting corner protection. The cardboard for corner protection was redesigned to fit the new packaging line. But actuality, that meant that we could reduce the number of different cardboard sizes from 12 to just 1 size.”
“It was pleasant to work together with the technical staff at Tentoma”, Ruud Willemsen says. “In principle, we were just specifying an ordinary infeed conveyor, when somebody suggested that we should add lifting functionality into the conveyor to lift the doors. For us, it was clear that Tentoma is an engineering-driven company that is open to finding the right solution, which fits our needs. When I think on Tentoma it is with a positive feeling.”

The film is sealed at the ends, and the film surface has low friction, so they do not stick together.

Bas Bosch, who deals with daily operations on the packaging line, confirms that he also has good experiences with technical support from Tentoma after the installation.
He said: “It is easy to contact the technical staff directly. If I send them a message with a technical question they usually reply within an hour. Initially, there were some commissioning problems, but Tentoma did some modifications which solved the problems. Every problem is taken seriously, and we have always found a solution. “
30% film savings and improved working environment

Seven months after installation, Skantrae is ready to draw some conclusions from the investment in the new RoRo StretchPack door packaging line.

Ruud Willemsen says, “I would estimate that the packaging output has increased with at least 50 to 60 % even with less labour. The old line did 60 doors per hour, and the new line packs for now 90 doors per hour, and we are still increasing that number. Now we do not have to work overtime in the evening and at the weekend anymore when we need to pack more than five hundred doors per day. “
Peter Klomp continues:” To be honest we didn’t see the packaging quality as an issue on the old packaging line, but now when we compared with packaging from the new line, we are proud of the result. I would estimate that we have achieved film savings of 30% compared to our heat shrink solution.” Besides cost saving, this also reduces the carbon footprint of Skantrae, just like removing heat shrink from the packaging line does.

Bas Bosch and his colleagues in the packaging department state that the new RoRo StretchPack® door packaging line has improved the working environment significantly. In particular, the lifting functionally has been well received, because the work is not so physically hard anymore.

Also working next to a heat shrink oven on 160-170 degrees was not a pleasure especially not in the summertime, but that is, fortunately, history now.

Benefits for Skantrae

  • Increased packaging capacity on minimum 50-60%
  • Reduction in film consumption on approx. 30%
  • Removed heat shrink oven from packaging line
  • Less energy consumption
  • Improved the working environment – less lifting and no heat from heat shrink oven
  • Removed overtime work – fewer labour costs
  • Improved packaging quality

Ferrari Driving Experiences in Pole Position as Brand Celebrates 75th Birthday

In recognition the 75th birthday of Ferrari, a leading driving experience provider has revealed that its Ferrari packages are currently leading customer popularity contests and are far out-selling the competition.

Newly released booking data from TrackDays.co.uk has disclosed that the Ultimate Ferrari History Driving Experience leaves their nearest competitor, the Lamborghini Huracan Blast, in its rear-view mirror, with figures showing comparative sales are three times as popular.

The Ultimate Ferrari History Driving Experience's surge in demand means that sales have doubled for two consecutive years. The popular package gives adrenaline junkies the opportunity to drive the Ferrari 458, 360 and 348 marques around a race circuit.

This rise in popularity can be attributed to the overall success of the Ferrari stable during this anniversary year. With its F1 team currently sitting second in the Constructor Standings, and the new Ferrari 296 GTB released this year earning top reviews from all reputable car magazines, it is hard to deny that Ferrari is currently riding on a wave of success.

The data also revealed that the most popular individual Ferrari package so far this year has been the Ferrari 458 Italia Blast, accounting for 43 per cent of all individual Ferrari driving experiences. The 458 fought off the Ferrari 360 Blast and 348 TS Blast experiences, which accounted for 32 per cent and 25 per cent of bookings, respectively.

Dan Jones, operations manager at TrackDays.co.uk, commented:
"75 years of Ferrari means three quarters of a century of speed, noise and of course, red paint. This momentous anniversary means there's no better time than 2022 to pay homage to 'The Prancing Horse'.
"Interestingly, it has been the 458 that has attracted the interest of our customers the most, so far this year. When the 458 was unveiled to the world in 2009, it quickly became the benchmark for the supercar world, and fast-forward thirteen years, if our booking data is anything to go by, it's clear that the model has made a lasting impression."
Dan concluded: "For most, owning a Ferrari remains a distant dream. However, TrackDays.co.uk grants admirers the chance, albeit for a few hours, to drive these iconic speedsters, meaning customers don't need to burn a hole in their pocket or win the lottery to get a taste of the high life!"

Mul-T-Lock is a Top Achiever at Guildford College

Mul-T-Lock has worked closely with K.B.O Fire & Security to upgrade the security at Guildford College, creating a dedicated master key suite for the ultimate peace of mind of staff, pupils and visitors.

Guildford College is the largest further and highest education college in the Surrey area, with approximately 3000 students and offers courses at all levels.  Success rates are higher than national benchmarks with many students operating with the local community on a regular basis.

Controlled and secure access is a high priority for the Estates and Facilities team, who sought the advice of K.B.O Fire & Security to undertake a comprehensive security overview.

K.B.O Fire & Security offered a number of innovative ideas to ensure complete security and a smooth operating system throughout the College site.

The resulting master key suite was designed and installed using Mul-T-Lock’s high security MTL400 patent protected solution, which combines advanced technologies with enhanced key copy control and maximum resistance to all forms of lock manipulation.

Sandra Searle, Facilities Customer Services Manager at Guildford College, said:
“The college is committed to offering staff and students a vibrant, happy and nurturing learning environment.
“So that we can do this as safely as possible, we ensure the security systems, right from the entrance to the College and throughout the site, are all maintained to a high level.

“K.B.O Fire & Security worked with us to produce a bespoke Mul-T-Lock master key suite that could enable total key management control.

“We are particularly impressed with the advanced protection capability as it means as a team, we can maintain a single key to open all doors as required and maintain differential access to rooms between staff, visitors and students.”
With up to 90 cylinders installed in a scalable design, the master key suite system was installed quickly and efficiently to ensure minimal disruption to learning timetables.

Lance Harding of K.B.O Fire & Security added:
“With Guildford College, we like to consider ourselves as part of this team, where we can really understand the bespoke requirements.

“The benefit of working in this way is allowing for the flexibility of access, including accounting for the large number of part- and full-time students alongside the wider community who all use the facilities.

“Here a master key system was the best choice, and using Mul-T-Lock enabled total patented key control to keep the college, and all who attend safe and secure.”
Tom Hyslop, Mul-T-Lock Regional Sales Manager concluded:
“By working with the College and K.B.O Fire & Security early in the specification process, the right level of protection could be designed into the master key suite, choosing MTL400 to make sure staff and students can work and learn in a safe and secure environment.

“It also meant installation could be planned carefully around learning timetables. And now, staff can focus and maintain their high standards for the benefit of all who attend with total peace of mind security.”

Yale achieve SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation

Yale have become one of the first companies to achieve the Secured by Design (SBD) Secure Connected Device accreditation, with their Conexis L1 Smart Lock achieving the required standard for both its physical and cyber security attributes.

With home security at the forefront of its design, the Conexis L1 Smart Lock has achieved the SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation, guaranteeing it has achieved the highest level of security for internet-connected products as well as meeting traditional physical security standards, providing users with a label of trust.

To achieve this, Yale’s smart alarm systems underwent rigorous testing to ensure they function and communicate as they should, and that the appropriate security controls are in place.

Yale’s Conexis L1 Smart Lock is designed to put the user in control of their home security, giving them complete peace of mind that their home is secure. Unlike a traditional lock, the Conexis L1 Smart Lock allows the user to check-in from anywhere in the world and receive real-time notifications in the event the door is unlocked unexpectedly.

Tailored to suit individual needs, access to a property can be gained through a variety of ways - via a key tag, key card, phone tag or a smartphone when using the Yale App

Users can send virtual keys so that friends and family members can gain access to a home, even when the user is not around. Once they have gained access, users can manage who can enter the property by disabling or deleting users through the Conexis L1 App. Virtual keys can be scheduled or made permanent for ultimate control of a home.

The Conexis L1 smart door lock uses encrypted Bluetooth technology and features a tamper alarm, so will sound an alarm when someone tries to gain access, offering an additional deterrent. Intelligently connected, the Conexis L1 digital door lock also works with leading voice assistants Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Michelle Kradolfer, SBD’s IoT Technical Officer, said:

“There has been an exponential rise in IoT and smart devices being used within the average UK household, but most are not produced without giving security much thought and leaving consumers vulnerable to cyber attacks.

“Therefore, companies with IoT products need to ensure they are developed as secure as possible and tested against the appropriate standards and certifications.

“I am so delighted that Yale have become one of the first companies to achieve the Secure Connected Device accreditation and clearly demonstrating that the Conexis L1 smart door lock has achieved the appropriate IoT standards and certifications, building confidence and trust in their product.

“We hope other companies will take note of this achievement and follow in Yale’s footsteps in developing IoT products safely for the UK market”.

Kevin Spencer, Head of Product Management at Yale UK said:
“With more homes starting to invest in smart home technology and creating smart ecosystems, it’s essential our smart security products not only provide convenience but also the highest level of security for our customers.

“We’re delighted the Yale Conexis L1 Smart Lock is one of the first products to achieve the Secured by Design ‘Secure Connected Device’ accreditation.
“At Yale it’s extremely important to us to provide consumers with security products which meet standards set through a reputable, trusted independent initiative, such as Secured by Design.”
SBD operates an accreditation scheme on behalf of the UK Police Service for products or services that have met recognised security standards. These products or services – which must be capable of deterring or preventing crime - are known as being of a ‘Police Preferred Specification’.

There are many hundreds of companies who produce thousands of individual attack resistant crime prevention products, in more than 30 different categories, which have met the exacting standards of the Police Preferred Specification.

This includes doors, windows, external storage, bicycle and motorcycle security, locks and hardware, asset marking, alarms, CCTV, safes, perimeter security products and many others.

This year SBD has launched a Secure Connected Device accreditation for companies providing Internet of Things (IoT) connected products.

With the increase in IoT products available and a growing ecosystem of interconnected devices, cyber criminals are targeting and exploiting vulnerabilities of both products and apps, as most are mass-produced without security being a major consideration.

Without the appropriate levels of security, any internet connected device or app is at risk of providing cyber criminals with the ‘key’ in accessing and stealing personal data.

Working closely with certifying bodies, who assess IoT products and services against the ETSI EN 303 645, SBD’s IoT Device assessment framework identifies the level of risk associated with an IoT device and its ecosystem, providing recommendations on the appropriate certification routes.

Once third party testing and independent certification for a product has been achieved, the company can apply to become SBD members, with the product receiving the SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation, a unique and recognisable accreditation that will highlight products as having achieved the relevant IoT standards and certifications.

SBD’s is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK.
