What Does it Mean to be an ADIA Member?

Being a member of an association can mean a lot of things to different people. To some it’s a symbol, to others it’s a necessity for their business growth and development. And both are true.

The Automatic Door Installation Association (ADIA) is a symbol of a company’s dedication to being informed and educated. The association is a business’s way of telling its clients that they care about the work they are doing.

With the ADIA this is done via:

Training courses

The ADIA provide members with the opportunity to demonstrate and demonstrate their knowledge of all things automatic doors with our many training courses. This includes access control, gates and barriers and health and safety.

The ADIA also provide members with free courses as well as City & Guilds accreditations which really show their skill level and ability to carry out their jobs with the utmost safety and precision.

They also offer NVQs to those wishing to receive a CSCS card.

A City & Guilds Accreditation is an impressive addition to any company description.

Accreditations

Many of our courses are accredited by City & Guilds.

On completion of the ADIA BS EN16005 course, members receive a card and certificate with a City & Guilds number. Cards are renewable annually until the fourth year (sat in 2020, a refresher course needs to be completed in 2024.)

The City & Guilds logo is recognised by 99% of employers with its prestigious history and thorough assessments of training centres, like the ADIA.

Promotion

The ADIA allows its members to promote themselves in many ways such as through the ADIA Online Directory. Here the association list all of their members with details such as what they cover in terms of work, and whether they have engineers listed on the DoorSafe Register.

Via social media and the website, they promote new members, job opportunities, new products and services and more – all for free.

Members also are able to pay a small advertising fee when the ADIA promote them to over 5000 businesses in the UK. And of course, members are able to use the ADIA logo across their promotional material, to show that they are a part of the community of businesses who care for the industry and the safety within it.

Of course, being an ADIA member depends on what your goals are. Is it to train your engineers? Is it to save time and money? Or is it to get more work? The ADIA can provide all of that for you.

Existing members should be sure to make full use of their benefits.

Up to 90% saving on energy for doors

Energy prices are at an all-time high as the country feels the effect of the ongoing energy crisis. In 2018, UK businesses spent £24 billion annually on energy, of which £17.9 billion was on electricity[1].

More recently, the average business electricity price in the UK has increased by a shocking 45%[2], creating a significant impact across a range of industries and business sizes.

A recent review[3] by The Office for National Statistics suggested: “Businesses that use energy more intensively, with large spending on energy relative to the size of their business, may find themselves under more pressure to pass on higher energy costs or may be more vulnerable to closure.”

Creating sustainable operations and lowering energy usage have become vital to ensure a company’s survival. Businesses are already paying attention to energy spending, and a recent survey of security professionals found 73% of respondents agreed that sustainability or energy efficiency has become more important in procurement decisions over the past 5–10 years[4].

With this in mind, what solutions are available to businesses to help drastically reduce energy output?

Energy saving with wireless locking

Getting security procurement right is the first step to cutting energy waste. For example, a business could save 90% on energy costs by switching to a wireless access control system[5].

Battery-powered wireless locks use less energy than traditional wired locks, which normally work via magnets connected permanently to electricity. Wireless locks work differently, only “waking up” when presented with a credential.

This translates into a potentially large saving on an annual energy budget, which could equate to more than 70%[6], or thousands of pounds over a typical access control installation’s lifetime.

Other related energy and material costs are also lower for wireless locks. During operation, wireless locks require just a battery change, approximately once every two years. The installation phase is also more cost-effective, with an estimated 82.5%3 saving on labour costs for a 100-door wireless installation versus wired installation.

Wireless locks also provide more flexibility - and can reduce costs - when you reconfigure or expand an office space. High-quality wireless locks can typically be reinstalled at another door without impacting their reliability, and typical cost savings on an office relocation or expansion are around 30%[7] with wireless over wired locking.

Cost effective AperioÒ wireless locks

AperioÒ wireless locks can save a business money at every stage of its life cycle. Battery-powered Aperio RFID-equipped cylinders, escutcheons, handles, and locks can be fitted as a new access control system or extend an existing installation by linking new doors to the same system wirelessly.

There’s no need for staff to swap their key cards, nor for anyone to carry more than one credential. They work seamlessly within almost every major access control system on the market, from over 100 different manufacturers. One control panel manages everything, both Aperio and legacy locks.

Installation is quick because there’s no cabling around the door, no invasive building work, and no need to change door hardware. Aperio devices fit almost any opening or security level, exterior and interior doors — wood, glass or aluminium — from fire and escape doors to meeting rooms, labs, and offices.

SMARTair wireless locking

Similarly, SMARTair offers cost-effective energy-saving access control with multiple credential options. SMARTair’s intuitive access control software and wireless door entry system provide a detailed security overview of the building, allowing facility managers to control, identify and update who can open every door.

There are SMARTair locks and other devices to secure just about any opening, in all kinds of buildings. Escutcheons and cylinders fit interior and exterior doors, wall readers control access to lifts, high-traffic entrance doors, car parks, and cabinet locks are available too, all fully monitored within the main access control platform.

SMARTair also gives users a choice of credentials, so they can open doors securely with a fob or mobile phone, as well as a standard electronic key card. Lost or stolen keys no longer present a problem, because these secure electronic credentials can be cancelled or reissued instantly.

Fire Testing Facility Opens in UK

UL Solutions and the Fire Protection Association open new laboratory for fire testing in the United Kingdom.

In response to the urgent demand for more fire testing facilities in the UK, a major new fire resistance testing laboratory at Blockley, Gloucestershire, is opening today (15 November 2022), featuring two of the largest furnaces of their kind.

UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science, in partnership with the Fire Protection Association (FPA), a national fire safety organisation, is opening a new fire resistance testing laboratory for building products and systems, doors and windows, fire stopping, joint systems and related fire resistance products.

Located in Blockley, Gloucestershire, the facility features fire resistance test furnaces, funded by UL Solutions, that will benefit manufacturers from the UK, Europe and worldwide who require independent fire testing and certification. The testing capabilities at the laboratory will also be beneficial to manufacturers seeking UKCA and CE marking services.

The FPA’s BS 8414 test rigs at Moreton-in-Marsh are now complemented by the two new furnaces at Blockley. The large 4-metre-by-3-metre wall furnace can accommodate larger test samples, and more systems can be tested simultaneously, allowing UL Solutions to provide customers with expedited results. A state-of-the-art CCTV high resolution camera system allows tests to be recorded and live streamed.

Karine Johnfroe, vice president and general manager of the Built Environment group at UL Solutions says:
“This new laboratory offers much-needed extra capacity for fire resistance testing, and we’re delighted to have worked with the FPA on this project.
“The partnership between the FPA and UL Solutions demonstrates our shared mission of working for a safer world.
“With the Blockley laboratory and by offering services to help meet regulatory and code requirements, we are able to provide trust and confidence to code authorities while supporting contractors and building owners that building products they use to meet regulatory and code requirements.”

The opening of the new laboratory is welcome news for manufacturers, specifiers and contractors. In the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy of 2017, they are now required to provide detailed test data for their projects and will now have increased independent testing capacity in the UK.

The laboratory’s location in central England, the fire safety expertise that the two parties bring, and the synergies that come from UL Solutions cooperating with the FPA, will help satisfy the needs for independent testing capacity and help ensure better fire safety compliance for a wide range of construction products and systems.

Although the fire resistance laboratory has been developed primarily to support UK-based manufacturers, it also serves as a resource for businesses outside the UK wishing to access the post-Brexit market, who can use it to confirm that their products meet UK requirements and standards.

Jonathan O’Neill OBE, the FPA’s managing director said:
"The FPA is delighted to be part of this dynamic collaboration with UL Solutions that will further enhance capacity and capabilities at our Blockley site.”
“UL Solutions certification is universally recognised as providing trust and confidence to code authorities that products meet code requirements. Now, as a result of our work together, manufacturers and system providers will not only have access to the tests and certifications required by UK regulations but will also be able to satisfy the requirements of regulators around the world."

The Blockley facility complements the existing UL Solutions testing and certification services provided across the UK, covering facades, cladding building envelope systems, and door hardware testing, including testing to a wide range of North American and European standards.

A global leader in applied safety science, UL Solutions transforms safety, security and sustainability challenges into opportunities for customers in more than 100 countries. UL Solutions delivers testing, inspection and certification services, together with software products and advisory offerings, that support our customers’ product innovation and business growth.

The FPA is the UK’s leading fire safety organisation, working to identify the dangers of fire and help customers reduce any fire-related risks through research, consultancy, training, publications, risk surveying and auditing. With over 4,000 members, the FPA actively seeks to move fire safety standards forward by lobbying government.

Concave Sliding Door Creates Unique Curved Garage Space in Redevelopment Project

A bespoke curved side sliding timber garage door by Rundum Meir has enabled a unique feature garage to be created as part of the extensive remodelling of a large private dwelling in southern England.

A Rundum Original sliding garage door spanning 8m wide and 2.2m high was integrated within the new designs by BWP Architects for a major property renovation, transforming a house that had evolved in an uncoordinated and poorly designed way.

The door provides access to a large garage space below the property’s garden level and its shape coordinates elegantly with a car turntable installed immediately in front and surrounding landscaping.

The owner tasked BWP with bringing new life to the property which has many original features. The undoing of previous conversion and extension work was necessary to enable the rebuilding of the residential property to a significantly higher standard, complete with the feature garage.

An existing detached garage to the rear was partially demolished and converted to create a private formal rear courtyard. The replacement curved garage is a stunning visual element, with the new automated Rundum Original door’s high-quality Larch complemented by bronze-coloured bespoke balustrading to add a dramatic and artistic feature to the access stair and upper courtyard over the garage.

The Rundum Original side sliding door is automated using two door-mounted MZ4 drives which are custom-made to automate these bespoke doors. These motors allow the door to traverse the curving tracks smoothly and quietly as required for this project.

The door was designed in conjunction with Rundum Meir’s UK team before being hand-crafted by its garage door experts. Every door is made to order to the highest standards using responsibly sourced materials and installed by Rundum Meir to provide an end-to-end service.

Danesch Missaghian, Director of Rundum Meir (UK) said:
“Not only is this exciting project completed using very high specification products throughout, but it is also designed superbly with the architects using a curved garage door in an interesting way that maximises vehicular access. We are delighted with the contribution our door has made to the success of this project.”

In addition to a range of different timber species, bespoke Rundum Original side sliding garage doors can be manufactured in high-strength extruded aluminium and finished in any RAL colour. This makes these garage doors suitable for any domestic, commercial or public application, with the scope for architects to think differently about how the space for a garage can be integrated into the wider building design.

Recharged Heritage to offer MINI Recharged classic Mini EV conversion to the public

Recharged Heritage Limited is transforming the classic Mini into a future-proof electric vehicle. Already two special vehicles have been completed: MINI Recharged Paul Smith and MINI Recharged Lakwena. Both have been enthusiastically received by the public.

In the Late 50s, Alec Issigonis had a simple but brilliant idea. Out of it came the greatest of all small cars, the Mini. A car that could transport four people and their luggage was fun to drive and stylishly modern. Now, MINI Recharged continues to tell the story of the classic Mini, electrifying them to provide emissions-free driving in an engaging yet sustainable way.

Built entirely in the UK, from its Padiham, Burnley, and Bristol facilities the team at Recharged Heritage replace the original petrol engine with a modern electric drive train. During the conversion, the team sympathetically updates the interior and the distinctive rear end gets MINI Recharged branding to tell the world that this is a different breed of Mini.

There have been electric conversions of classic cars before but not like this one. From the start, an enormous effort has been made to ensure that the conversion can easily be reversed. The body remains as the original with no new holes and the petrol engine can be put back in, with no problem. Also, the car has been engineered so that it weighs no more than the original.

The fun factor in driving a classic Mini has been preserved fully intact and you don’t need to buy the whole car. Potential customers can either have their own Classic Mini converted or purchase a model from Recharged Heritage and then have it electrified.

With two modes available from the 18-kWh lithium-ion battery with a 72kW electric motor revving up 14,000 rpm, customers can opt for ‘Pure’ mode, which accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds and achieves a top speed of 78 mph (equivalent to the Classic Mini 1275 GT) or ‘Sport’ mode, which reaches 0 to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds and travels at a top speed of 92 mph.

With a 6.6 kW onboard charger, the battery can be charged in three hours on a 7kW wall box or nine hours on a standard three-pin plug house connection, the MINI Recharged offers a WLTP range of 103 miles.

Two special MINI Recharged vehicles have already been revealed. MINI and legendary designer Sir Paul Smith has collaborated on a MINI Recharged Paul Smith car. It debuted in Milan and was then shown at the 2022 Goodwood Revival and in Japan. People love it and so does Sir Paul.

In August 2022, London-based artist Lakwena revealed the MINI Recharged Lakwena car at the European Championships in Munich. Both cars embody what MINI Recharged is all about. A stylish sustainable, zero-emissions way to future-proof the classic Mini.

“Whenever we attended events with the car, the feedback was amazing, with members of the public asking if they can order their own. In truth, we always wanted to commercialise MINI Recharged and offer customer cars, including individual collaborations but didn’t realise we’d be offering the service so quickly.

We attach great importance in ensuring that MINI Recharged conversions retain the authenticity of the original vehicle when we marry it to the latest 21st Century EV technology. Not only does this idea underline the legacy of the traditional British brand, but also demonstrates British engineering excellence fit for the future.” say Recharged Heritage co-founders and directors Tom Festa, Chris Harper, and Chris Hazel.

The Recharged Heritage team suggests that costs will be starting from £42,500 for converting your own existing Mini and £62,500 for including a donor classic Mini.

More information on Recharged Heritage can be found on their website: rechargedheritage.co.uk

Garador Helps Youth Visit Thailand

Leading garage door manufacturer Garador has been continuing with its programme of assisting local charities.

Recently, Garador helped sponsor a group of youngsters on a special educational visit to Thailand.

The trip was arranged by Somerset’s Reach Youth, an organisation which provides support, interventions and general services to help improve the social and emotional development in young people.

A spokesperson for Reach Youth said:
“We believe in our young people and their ability to grow and develop given the chance. We see time and time again how including and supporting them can turn their lives around.”

On this trip, the group of young people spent time supporting the work of a local orphanage, volunteering in an elephant sanctuary and learning about the social and cultural differences.

Paul Eddleston, Marketing Manager at Garador, commented
“The group worked hard fundraising before leaving on the trip, and we were delighted to be able to make a contribution to this worthwhile cause.”

All locked up

Glen Butler, Sales Centre Manager at HOPPE UK, details the latest security offering from ARRONE

ARRONE was established in the UK in 1988 and, as a HOPPE brand, benefits from HOPPE’s 40 years of experience in the door and window hardware industry.

Building on this industry knowledge and insight, ARRONE launched two padlock series - the AR85 and the AR90/54 - to offer a wider range of styles and functionality.

Brass padlocks

The range contains three different size brass padlocks – 30mm, 40mm and 50mm – all with hardened steel shackles. Brass padlocks are resistant to rust making them suitable for high moisture applications and outdoor use.

With such versatile applications, brass padlocks are a popular choice for both domestic and commercial use at a cost-effective price point.

The padlocks are available with two different keying options: keyed to differ or keyed alike. Padlocks that are keyed to differ can only be opened by the keys supplied in the box. Keyed alike is ideal for users that need to use several padlocks but doesn’t want to have multiple keys.

Rather than having to switch keys to open each padlock, this keying method allows a single key to be used, saving time and reducing the risk of lost keys.

Fingerprint padlocks

For those who are looking for a digital option without complex functionality, there is also the AR90/54 padlock series. This padlock can be unlocked using just a fingerprint and respond to recognised prints in less than a second.

The Zinc housing and steel alloy shackle provide enhanced tamper and corrosion resistance making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. With a long-lasting, rechargeable battery, the FingerScan Padlock can be used for up to 200 days from a single charge and uses a standard USB power cable to recharge.

Key safe for convenience

If several people need access to a home, the ARRONE Key Safe allows homeowners to store keys in a secure and convenient place of their choosing.

It’s ideal for family members, holiday lets, tradespeople and carers. The wall-mounted, indoor and outdoor key safe box is easy to set and just needs a four-digit code (set by the homeowner) to gain access.

Secured by Design

HOPPE (UK) is a member of the Police’s Secured by Design (SBD) scheme.

Recommending products from ARRONE’s range of security accessories not only makes it easy for homeowners to improve home security as they don’t require complicated installation, but also provides further peace of mind to homeowners, knowing the products meet the SBD standards.

Door Manufacturer Announces Expansion Plans Ahead of 100-year Anniversary

A specialist manufacturer of fire-rated, acoustic and PAS 24 security doors and doorsets, is adding a second factory to boost its manufacturing capacity, ahead of its 100th anniversary next year.

Birmingham-based E&SW Knowles employs 114 people and is expanding its manufacturing operation into a second building, adding 13,750 sq ft to its existing 44,500 sq ft capability.

It is designed to support strategic growth and will further improve manufacturing efficiencies and customers’ experience.

The investment has been announced following the company’s recent acquisition by Sentry Doors Limited. The two companies’ product ranges are complementary and have minimal overlap in the industry sectors they serve.

The partnership will provide both businesses with opportunities for further innovation and growth.

Managing director Steve Horner said:
“This strategic acquisition along with our 100th anniversary will mean that 2023 will be a very big year for us.

“We wanted to do something that marked this achievement but also put a marker in the sand about where we are going and our intention to become the UK’s leader in timber fire safety and security doorsets.

“We are committed to the West Midlands area, and will create 10 more jobs next year alone. The new facility will mean more new machinery, processes, and infrastructure to support our growth ambitions.
“We are very proud of our 100-year heritage and industry experience but are also looking ahead to ensure we remain competitive, customer-focused, and innovative.”
Born from a family-owned business, E&SW Knowles’ products are widely specified in the education, healthcare, leisure, commercial, and social housing sectors, complying with the latest standards, building regulations, and sustainability demands.

Sentry Doors is a specialist manufacturer of bespoke, fully certified timber fire and security entrance doors for the social housing, public sector, and residential markets and is the supplier of choice for local authorities, housing associations, and their contractors.
