Robust competence frameworks for Door, Gate, and Shutter systems

In a landmark development for the built environment sector, the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), and the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA), have completed an extensive 18-month programme facilitated by CiTB, to develop new competence frameworks for the powered pedestrian door, industrial door, steel doorset, and automated gate sectors.

“This marks a pivotal step forward for our industry,” said DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens, “For too long, competence has been assumed rather than evidenced. These new frameworks set a clear, nationally recognised benchmark for what ‘good’ looks like, not just in technical ability, but in the knowledge, behaviours and experience required to work safely and effectively. DHF is proud to be part of leading this initiative, ensuring that employers, clients, and specifiers can have absolute confidence in the people they put on site.”

This milestone CLC initiative, born from the results of the new Building Regulations and the Hackitt Report, marks a significant advancement in the construction industry, and one that is set to reshape national expectations for safety, quality, and competence of individuals who operate in these sectors.

There are four frameworks, each comprises a detailed Strategy Statement, a defined Route to Competence, and a comprehensive Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours (SKEB) matrix.

The door, gate and shutter system frameworks are scheduled for public release in early July, with an official launch planned for September in alignment with Fire Door Safety Week, an initiative led by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF).

DHF and ADSA have also worked closely with the BWF on a complementary competence framework for timber doorsets, including both fire and non-fire-resisting variants.

Raising the bar on competence

At the heart of this initiative lies an urgent focus on what competence really means. In an industry where safety-critical systems are installed and maintained daily, the need for a competent workforce is absolutely essential. The frameworks aim to clarify expectations, provide structured career development pathways, and ensure that competence is measurable, auditable, and demonstrable.

This is more than a regulatory exercise; rather, it represents a cultural shift across the sector. With increasing demands for quality assurance, traceability, and accountability, the frameworks serve as a vital tool for raising standards and reducing risk.

Ken Price, Managing Director of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association, said, “It has been a privilege for me to work alongside my colleagues from the Door and Hardware Federation, the British Woodworking Federation, and a number of other Trade Associations to arrive at these extremely important competency frameworks. Our challenge has been to create documents that define consistent routes to competence, but that also recognise the fact that employees in our industry can come with a wide range of transferable skills from their earlier careers. We have spent many hours creating our output and have been supported tremendously by the standards development teams at the CITB whom I wish to thank."

Sector collaboration and industry-led delivery

The work was carried out under the umbrella of the Sector Led Group 10 (SLG10) for Door, Gate, and Shutter Systems (DGSS), ensuring that voices from across the industry, including manufacturers, installers, trainers, and end-users, helped shape the final product. By drawing on real-world experience and practical insight, the frameworks are not only technically rigorous but are also fit for purpose across a diverse range of environments and applications.

Influencing national standards

During the development process, DHF and ADSA teams identified critical gaps in the existing National Occupational Standards (NOS) for door, gate, and shutter systems. As a result, both associations now sit on the NOS review group along with leaders in the industry, some of whom are members of either association. Facilitated by CITB, all who contribute are playing a proactive role in reshaping future standards at a national level, and ensuring consistency, relevance, and improved safety outcomes across the UK.

Supporting the ‘Right Person, Right Card’ approach

A further benefit of the new frameworks is their alignment with CSCS card allocation, reinforcing the principle that the right qualifications and training should underpin every site role. This provides clarity for employers and clients, while giving skilled workers a clear route to recognition and progression.

A defining moment for the industry

This is, without question, a key moment for the door, gate, and shutter systems sector. The introduction of these frameworks delivers the structure and transparency the industry has long needed, a foundation for safer buildings, better outcomes, and a competent workforce.

Employers, contractors, and industry bodies are encouraged to review the new frameworks and ensure their workforce is aligned with the latest competence standards. The documents will be available shortly via the CITB website.

Creating the world’s most powerful production V12

As the Zenvo Aurora programme continues towards its 2026 production target, development of the ‘Mjølner’ powertrain is accelerating. The pioneering set up goes against convention, ensuring Aurora is a truly global hypercar. The most powerful production V12 ever built, while also meeting global emissions standards.

With Zenvo Automotive preparing to showcase the Aurora at Monterey Car Week in California, the latest episode in the Zenvo Automotive docuseries provides a unique insight into the challenges and details of this groundbreaking powertrain. Working with engine experts MAHLE Powertrain, the collaborative team leading the project explains what goes into developing, packaging and delivering a system capable of delivering 1,250bhp, integrating with a state-of-the-art hybrid system, revving to 9,800rpm, without compromising any of the driveability.

The all-new powertrain combines the latest technologies with tried and tested methods and processes, pulling on decades of experience held by MAHLE Powertrain. This collaborative approach has pushed industry boundaries, requiring out-of-the-box thinking to achieve the performance, efficiencies and engagement which were set at the beginning of the ambitious project. The result is a powertrain benefitting from ideas, approaches and best practices, while achieving global emissions targets through the entire lifespan the engine.

“We always knew that the Aurora project was going to be a push for what was possible through conventional and regular thinking,” explains Jens Sverdrup, Chairman and CCO, Zenvo Automotive. “Was an off-the-shelf system more straightforward? Of course. Was it ever an option?

"Absolutely not. Aurora is about delivering no compromises, and that means developing our own powertrain which delivers exactly what we wanted, exactly how we wanted it. Like the car itself, the ‘Mjølner’ powertrain pushes the boundaries of what can be done from an engineering perspective. No compromise.”

Watch the latest insight into the Aurora programme here

Zenvo Automotive is a producer of limited-edition hypercars based in Præstø, Denmark. Founded in 2007, Zenvo was started with the aim of combining the latest technologies and innovation with an analogue feel, offering the driver a true connection and astonishing performance.

In August 2023, Zenvo revealed the all-new Aurora, a V12 hypercar that will be available in Agil and Tur model designations. Limited to just a handful of cars per year, Aurora continues its intense and extensive development throughout 2025, with first deliveries expected late in 2026. Every Zenvo Aurora will be hand-assembled in Denmark, available to collectors and enthusiasts globally, with world-class customer support via a carefully curated retailer network.

SWS UK Celebrates 40 Years

This year, SWS UK is commemorating four decades of trust, quality and innovation with a schedule of events to mark its 40th anniversary.

SWS is well known as an industry favourite. From pioneering garage doors to industry-leading security shutters, SWS has continually evolved to meet the needs of its customers, ensuring that every product they manufacture meets the highest standards of safety and performance.

Reflecting on SWS UK’s long history, Managing Director, Colin Reoch, said, "As a British manufacturer, we’ve witnessed remarkable global transformation since our founding in 1985. Throughout these changing times, we’ve remained steadfast in our core values: building strong customer relationships, delivering reliable, high-quality products, and providing exceptional service – principles that continue to guide us just as they did in the 1980s."

Commemorating the Occasion

To mark 40 years of innovation and a significant milestone in the company’s industry, SWS UK, together with 80 guests, enjoyed a day of celebrations at The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Warwickshire. The guest list included both long-standing and new customers, as well as key suppliers, including platinum event sponsors GfA, Somfy and Blumin.

A well-planned itinerary kept guests entertained throughout the day. Golf lovers had the chance to enjoy a round on one of the stunning courses at the Belfry, a venue that has hosted the Ryder Cup four times. Those seeking adventure made their way to the Lea Marston Shooting Club for activities like archery, axe throwing, air rifle shooting and clay pigeon shooting. Meanwhile, guests preferring a more tranquil experience indulged in a day of relaxation and treatments at The Belfry’s spa.

The celebrations carried on into the evening with a drinks reception, a three-course dinner and a raffle, along with a prize-giving ceremony.

Special Guest – Andrew Dootson

Andrew Dootson, SWS UK’s founder and first Managing Director, was present at the event with his wife, Christine. He launched SWS UK in 1985 from his garage and expanded the company with innovative products, numerous industry milestones, and a commitment to exceptional service, until his retirement in 2011.

"The event was a tremendous success and was enjoyed by all," said SWS UK’s Commercial Director, Kevin Lindeque. "Without our loyal customers, SWS wouldn’t be the successful company it is today, so the event was our way of thanking them for their support over the last 40 years. The Belfry was the perfect setting to enjoy a relaxed day with colleagues, customers and suppliers, and we’re grateful that they took the time out of their busy work schedule to celebrate with us."

Later this year, SWS UK will be hosting a second event for employees and their families, in recognition of their commitment and hard work over the years. Congratulations, SWS UK, and here’s to the next 40 years!

‘Many manufacturers have faced significant challenges in achieving full compliance’

The UK’s Consumer connectable security regime came into effect on 29th April 2024 DHF’s General Manager & Secretary, Michael Skelding, touches on how this has impacted the country’s digital landscape, and how DHF can support its members.

The implementation of the PTSI Regulations in April 2024 intended to strengthen the security of consumer smart devices. The legislation addressed growing concerns over the vulnerabilities embedded within the Internet of Things (IoT). A little over a year later, DHF is reflecting on its impact, assessing its effectiveness, and considering the future for IoT security.

With the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Regulations now law in the UK, this requires manufacturers of consumer IoT products to meet minimum cybersecurity standards. From 29 April 2024, products must eliminate default passwords, provide a clear vulnerability disclosure policy, and be transparent about security update support timelines. Non-compliance with these measures can lead to significant penalties, including fines of up to £10 million or 4% of global revenue, enforcement notices, and product recalls.

“In the year following the enforcement, many manufacturers have faced significant challenges in achieving full compliance,” explains Michael. “These include uncertainty around product scope; supply chain hurdles, because importers and distributors now also share responsibility under the PSTI Regulations; implementation delays due to the complexity of managing compliance across new and existing inventory, and difficulties in producing the required Statement of Compliance (SoC), as defined in Schedule 4 of the PSTI Regulations 2023.”

To support the industry, DHF has held several free educational webinars for its members, detailing the PSTI Act’s obligations for manufacturers, importers, and distributors of internet-connectable devices. A DHF Cyber Security committee has been formed to focus efforts in this area and a number of initiatives and campaigns are being created as a result of a recent meeting. These initiatives will benefit DHF members who will be kept up to date with developments.

And to further assist manufacturers in demonstrating compliance and advancing best practices, Secured by Design (SBD), in collaboration with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), has introduced the Secure Connected Device (SCD)certification. This police-recognised certification evaluates products against all 13 ETSI EN 303 645 provisions, supports industry leadership in security innovation, offers the only police-recognised IoT security certification in the UK, and enhances trust with distributors, retailers, and consumers.

The Importance of Master Keying for Growing Businesses

As businesses expand, so does the complexity of managing access effectively across rooms and locations for individuals and teams, especially when it comes to protected areas.

What begins as a small operation with a single-entry point and a close-knit team can swiftly transform into a dynamic, complex environment, one where a wide range of personnel require different levels of access to sometimes sensitive areas. Effective access management becomes not just a convenience but a strategic imperative.

Managing this without a considered approach can lead to inefficiencies, confusion, non-compliance and potential security risks. The solution is a master key system that allows a hierarchy of access, where each lock still has its unique key but can also be opened by an authorised master key.

This approach allows staff to carry keys precisely aligned with their roles, while senior managers, facilities teams and business owners can benefit from a master key to unlock all designated areas. The outcome is a streamlined, highly controlled security system, which eliminates unnecessary key duplication while reinforcing a smarter, more efficient access approach.

For growing businesses, this can bring several important advantages. One of the most immediate is the simplification of access. Rather than carrying a large set of keys or relying on unsecured workarounds, individuals can access only what they need. This reduces the chance of unauthorised access, and in environments where stock, equipment, or confidential information is stored, that assurance can be vital.

Operational efficiency is also enhanced, whereby time wasted sorting through unlabelled keys, replacing lost sets or tracking down the right keys for a specific door is minimised.

Having a clear, mapped-out key structure saves time, streamlines daily routines, and facilitates better onboarding for new team members. When an employee moves on, there’s no need to change multiple locks or chase down several sets of keys; the system remains intact and secure.

Another key advantage lies in the system’s flexibility to support future growth. A thoughtfully designed master key system can evolve alongside an organisation, expanding to accommodate new facilities, departments, or operational changes.

Whether it's opening a second office, integrating a new warehouse, or restructuring internal teams, a scalable access solution ensures security keeps pace with progress from day one.

In summary, master key systems deliver more than convenience; they provide a strategic layer of control. Business leaders gain clear oversight of access permissions, ensuring every key is issued with intent and accountability. The result is a secure, future-proofed infrastructure that supports both operational agility and peace of mind.

Combined with high-security cylinders and key registration protocols, such as Mul-T-Lock’s patented systems, businesses can protect against unauthorised key duplication and enhance security against cylinder manipulation and cylinder attacks.

With the system in place, only authorised personnel have access when and where required, with protected areas secure from those who lack the right credentials.

Master keying offers a practical and proven way to support business growth without compromising security or creating unnecessary complexity. It provides a solid foundation that enables flexibility, maintains control and promotes confidence in how access is managed across an organisation. For any growing business looking to stay secure while remaining efficient and scalable, master keying is a step worth considering.

Valkyrie races to best result at Road America as Aston Martin THOR Team builds on progress

The spectacular new Aston Martin Valkyrie achieved its best finish yet in global endurance competition, when it placed sixth in the latest round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IMSA) – the Motul Sportscar Grand Prix of Road America (WI).

The result marked the sixth consecutive top ten finish for the British hypercar in IMSA, extending its remarkable points run and maintaining its 100% finishing record on its debut season in North America’s premier endurance series. And the best IMSA finish ever recorded by a car built to 'Le Mans Hypercar' (LMH) regulations, Valkyrie being the only car in IMSA's premier GTP category derived from a road-legal hypercar.

The British contender is also the first LMH car of any kind to compete in IMSA, and the only one contesting both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) simultaneously, having made its competition debut in the Qatar 1812km in February.

The Aston Martin THOR Team (THOR) and works drivers Roman De Angelis (CAN) and Ross Gunn (GBR), delivered a solid and competitive performance in an incident-filled two hour and 40-minute race, consistently running close enough to the leaders to pounce on rivals when they hit trouble.

And in an event featuring no less than four Full Course Yellow (FCY) periods (where the race was neutralised and run behind the Safety Car), this happened on more than one occasion. Valkyrie showed promise all weekend, having set the second fastest time in free practice on Friday.

Gunn then qualified the #23 Valkyrie 10th for the race, less than 0.7s off the pole position time in a highly competitive 15-minutes GTP-only session on the long and challenging 4.05-mile circuit.

THOR opted to keep Gunn on track during the first FCY as others pitted early in the race, giving Valkyrie a competitive track position it then maintained for much of the race. In De Angelis’s hands Valkyrie then ran as high as fifth as the event moved through its various FCY phases and teams deployed diverse strategies.

But in the final uninterrupted 40-minute run to the flag, the British hypercar more than held its own and even extended its advantage over the chasing pack to finish a comfortable sixth, 16.5s behind the winner.

Ross Gunn, driver #23 Aston Martin Valkyrie: “This was a very strong weekend for the car and the team. I’m very proud of everybody that’s working hard to improve the performance. We were able to hold on to some very fast cars out there and even pass some of them. It was a fun afternoon. We’re obviously still not where we want to be, but clearly now it’s evident the progress that we’re making. We’ve got quite a big break now until Indy, so for sure there is more time to keep uncovering more pace, but this was a breakout race for us.”

Roman De Angelis, driver #23 Aston Martin Valkyrie: “It was a pretty good weekend for us. This was obviously our best result so far with this Aston Martin Valkyrie. Everyone did a great job in qualifying six tenths off the pole, I know we were tenth on the grid, but this is the longest track and that was the closest gap to the front so far. The race was great, I really enjoyed finally getting to race against some guys that have been at the front for years now in this class, and I can’t wait to build on this performance at Indianapolis.”

Valkyrie’s next race in IMSA takes place at the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, in the six-hour ‘Battle on the Bricks’ from 19-21 September.
