An independent opinion

Optional External Camera
The Door Industry Journal was one of several media contacts selected to test one of these cameras, here is what their editor, Derek Hibbart had to say:

“This is a really well made and surprisingly easy to install product when compared with two others we have looked at before.
“It took me less than half an hour to set-up the HDS on one of the office PCs (including reading the manual first) and a few minutes more to install on an Android phone. Other than one minor hitch which was encountered while trying to find the “Create account” section on the Home Monitor website, overall it was very easy to do.
“The things we particularly like are the Wi-Fi operation, saving the hassle of installing Ethernet cable and the ability to add extra indoor or outdoor cameras to the same control panel and app”.

The HomeMonitor HDS retails for £124.99 (exc. VAT) - for more information about the Y-cam HomeMonitor Plus package visit www.y-cam.com or www.homemonitor.me or for trade pricing contact Y-cam Solutions Ltd. on 020 8334 7373

Closing The Shop Door Makes Good Business Sense

Following predictions of severe temperature drops and a spare capacity of just 1.5% in National Grid energy reserves, GEZE UK is urging retailers, architects and specifiers to consider the environmental and financial impact of keeping shop doors open when specifying entrance systems.

Independent research by the Close The Door Campaign, of which GEZE is a sponsor, found that retailers could reduce their winter energy consumption by between 30 and 50 per cent by simply shutting their doors when the heating is on.

The retail sector consumed £3.2bn of energy in 2013 and as an industry has the second highest energy consumption in the UK. Research by Cambridge University commissioned by the Close The Door campaign showed that keeping a door open and using air curtains and additional heating significantly increased energy usage, driving up CO2 emissions - figures that were dramatically reduced simply by closing the shop door. An open door also makes it impossible to maintain accepted guidelines for a healthy working temperature for staff.

While shutting the door drives down energy use, Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK explained that specifying the right door will help to contribute to energy efficiency.
He said: “By considering the environmental benefits of ‘shutting the door’ during the initial specification process, retailers, architects and specifiers can create an attractive welcoming entrance that offers maximum energy efficiency.
“There are a wide range of sliding, swing and revolving automatic doors available to suit every application. Activation products such as unidirectional radar sensors ensure automatic doors are only open when a user approaches, closing again as they depart, which reduces 'hold open' time by 40 per cent. What’s more automatic doors allow shoppers to enter and exit a store without needing to break stride, juggle shopping or let go of a trolley.
“Ultimately, for retail environments you need to specify an automatic door system that will open and close efficiently, maximise footfall and minimise heat loss or gain.”

The need to reduce energy consumption is particularly important this year. In November, the National Grid appealed for more powerfor the first time in three years, whilst energy regulator Ofgem has warned that without action the grid’s spare capacity could fall to zero. At the same time, the MET Office has predicted temperatures as low as -14C in January.

Jeannie Dawkins, founder of the Close The Door campaign said:
“I founded the campaign after seeing the heat from open shop doors melting ice and snow on the street. It defies common sense - you wouldn’t turn on the heating and leave doors and windows open at home, so why do so many businesses do it?
“Independent research found that closing the door makes a huge impact. It reduces energy use and cuts a shop’s CO2 emissions by up to 10 tonnes per annum for heating days alone, the equivalent of three return flights from London to Hong Kong.
“But it’s not just about the environment, closing the door makes good business sense too. It lowers winter fuel bills, making shops more profitable and reduces shop lifting. Our research also found that there was no evidence that shutting the door led to a reduction in footfall, one of the most common concerns raised by retailers when defending their open door policies. . There are now thousands of shops of all types and sizes across the UK trading successfully with the door closed – none of which would be doing so if this adversely affected profit.”

For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic operators and manual door closers call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk.

Maserati to compete in the 2016 GT4 championships

The final round of the 2015 Trofeo World Series took place at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit last weekend, bringing the sixth and final season in Maserati's single-make series to a close.

This, however, will not be the end of Maserati's sporting activities: the GranTurismo MCs will be back on track in 2016 competing in the international GT4 series run by private teams.

Over 20 cars across 10 different teams have confirmed their participation and the teams have already taken delivery of their cars and have begun to make the necessary modifications to bring them into line with the new category's regulations.

The return to the GT4 category comes after a debut season in the 2009 European GT4 championship and as a result of the positive feedback from three 'test races' in 2015, at Road America, Laguna Seca and Misano.

Next season, Maserati will be battling on two fronts: in the European GT4 Championships and the US Pirelli World Challenge.

The modifications required for GT4 homologation concern the engine and aerodynamics. The car's overall technical make-up will remain unchanged: the 4700cc engine, electro-actuated transmission with paddle-shift commands and a kerb weight of 1410 kg will stay.

The fitting of an air scoop will reduce the car's power output to 430 bhp from its current 488 bhp while a newly-designed rear spoiler and modified diffuser will bring the car's performance into line with that of the other GT4 cars.

The GranTurismo MCs final set up will be established during the official pre-championship Balance of Performance (BoP) tests where the GT4 SRO homologation standards will be completed.

Maserati will provide technical support and replacement parts for the private teams competing in the championship, using the experience and knowledge built up over six years in the Maserati Trofeo Championship.

Roberto Bozzi, Sales & Marketing Motorsport Manager for Maserati said:
“The Pirelli World Challenge, and the new European GT4 series, is an excellent opportunity for Maserati and all those teams and clients who want to race with a marque steeped in character and history. The budget is accessible and the series highly competitive and professional”.

Maserati will be tracking the performance of the teams competing in Europe and the USA and will shortly provide details for a special award for the best Maserati driver and team.
Roberto Bozzi added: "It is an incentive and recognition for drivers and teams that will again lead Maserati's fight against top competition in the form of Porsche, Aston Martin and Chevrolet".

Working on Powered Gates? - A Warning to Electricians from the DHF Powered Gate Group

The general standard of electrical wiring on this gate was excellent ... but the safety hazards presented to the users and the general public were on a par with the gate systems that have resulted in a number of deaths and serious injuries. Dangers included high impact and crushing forces, shearing hazards, unguarded rollers and the absence of the required CE mark.

Electricians who carry out work on powered gates run the risk of criminal prosecution under health and safety legislation - even if the wiring and other electrical work undertaken follows the regulations and is to a high standard.

The warning comes from the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) Powered Gate Group which represents the leading UK manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and automation equipment.

Liability for the operating safety of an automated gate can rest with the last person who has carried out work on that particular gate. If the gate is unsafe for a reason unconnected with its electrical operation - because its crushing or impact forces are too high, for example - then an electrician who has worked on the gate could still be responsible for its overall safety.

This is because he is under a legal duty to ensure the gate is left in a safe condition when repair or maintenance work of any sort has carried out, explains the DHF Powered Gate Group.

DHF training officer Nick Perkins said:
“Since 2005 there have been seven deaths in the UK and Ireland, at least nine serious injuries and countless near misses caused by dangerous powered gates. It's estimated that only 30% of the 500,000 automated gates in service in the UK are safe to use as a result of the general lack of awareness of the legal requirements covering powered gates.
“So it’s highly likely that a powered gate that an electrician has been invited to work on is actually not safe. So any work the electrician carries out on it would make him liable for the gate’s ongoing safety under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and possibly the Workplace Regulations 1992.
“In 2010 an unsafe gate resulted in the tragic death of a young child. One of the two companies eventually prosecuted was the last company called out to carry out a repair to the gate.”

He pointed out that powered gates are considered to be machinery in the eyes of the law and as such are covered by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 (SMR). Some electrical or security professionals may not have complete knowledge of SMR, and may not have the specialist force/time measuring equipment to set up and check the safety of any “contact” safety systems used on the gate.

Nick Perkins continued saying: “Unless you have detailed knowledge of the legislation and applicable standards you are well advised to either seek the assistance of a qualified powered gate professional or get yourself trained, qualified and equipped before embarking on any form of powered gate work.”
“Doing any work on a powered gate system that does not result in a completely safe outcome could see you facing criminal charges as a result, not to mention the trauma and anguish that will result if your actions or inactions result in injury or death.”

The DHF Powered Gate Group is a collective of the UK's premier gate installation companies and the major automation equipment suppliers who work together to provide state of the art technology in safe and reliable installations.

For comprehensive guidance on powered gate safety, or to book places on the DHF powered gate safety diploma course, visit www.dhfonline.org.uk .

Bluetech Automation Launch Innovative Smart Bluetooth + RF/NFC Padlock

Bluetech Automation is proud to announce the addition of the QL Smart Bluetooth LE and RFiD/NFC enabled keyless padlock to their product range.

This smart padlock offers a whole host of access control features in a device that can be used anywhere you would use a traditional padlock.

Six Unlocking Methods plus Android and iOS compatibility

The Bluetech QL padlock operates via Bluetooth or NFC, it is Android and iOS compatible and offers six unlocking methods. It can be opened or closed with a smartphone using the free downloadable app or by one of five RFiD devices (card, key fob, optional sticker, wristband or stainless steel ring).

NFC Key Fob (supplied)
Pairing the lock via Bluetooth to a smartphone using the free iOS or Android app is very straightforward. You then open the app on your phone, press the button on the padlock and the open screen appears showing an unlock button. As an alternative, for faster opening, you can set the Auto unlock feature.

The Bluetech QL padlock can be programmed to operate with up to 50 different NFC keys (two NFC cards and a key fob are included with the standard package). In fact, anything with an NFC chip (except a smartphone) can be paired, so if you have one already you don’t have to use the ones supplied.

Optional Wearable NFC Ring
Two Year Battery Life

The built-in battery will last for about two years in normal use and when the lower of the two lights on the padlock button flashes red, a recharge is needed.

Should the battery become totally flat, a portable charger connected to the port on the back of the lock (using the micro USB cable supplied) will supply enough power to open it before it’s charged in the normal way.

User Tracking Feature

If you need to keep track of who has accessed your padlock, the app offers a compelling feature which provides historical data showing who opened it and when, including precise dates and times.

This feature makes the Bluetech QL padlock an ideal choice for controlling access simply, without resorting to installing an expensive security system.

Standard Package

The standard kit includes the padlock, two RFiD cards, one RFiD key fob, a micro USB charging lead plus a quick start guide and has an RRP of £58.30 plus VAT (£69.95 including VAT).

Optional extras include RFiD stainless steel ring, wallet sticker and wristband.

All of the features described above, plus the multiple choices of operation make the Bluetech QL the only wireless padlock on the market with both NFC and Bluetooth capabilities (according to our research at the time of writing).

For trade pricing or to request a brochure, please contact Les McLaren at Bluetech Automation Ltd on 020 3369 8786 or email him at lesmclaren@bluetechautomation.eu .

One of the Great Ferrari Masterpieces leads Bonhams Grand Palais Sale

Bonhams returns to Paris for the annual Grand Palais Sale on 4 February 2016, led by the magnificent 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB, estimated at €2,500,000-3,500,000 and offered without reserve.

Developed by marque founder, Enzo Ferrari, the 275 GTB is considered a masterpiece of motor car design. Boasting a V12, 300 bhp engine, it was the successor to the 250 series, spearheaded by the legendary 250 GTO (currently the most valuable motor car sold at auction, following Bonhams $38,115,000 sale of a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO), leading it to be met with great applause when it was introduced at the 1964 Paris Autosalon.

Sleek, muscular, and expertly proportioned, the front-engined, two-door Berlinetta is from the second series of the model’s production, which introduced the longer nosed variant, making it rarer, more aerodynamic, and considerably prettier. Chassis 8973 is one of the ultra desirable ‘torque tube’ models, featuring Pininfarina designed Scaglietti coachwork, complete with matching numbers and continuous history.

Further highlights from the Ferrari stable include a 1990 Ferrari F40 Berlinetta, estimated at €950,000-1,100,000. The F40 was the last model ever approved by founding father, Enzo Ferrari, and when it was launched, it was the most powerful model ever built by the marque – the perfect finale to Enzo Ferrari’s legacy.

Philip Kantor, Bonhams European Head of Motoring, said:
“Bonhams Grand Palais Sale returns with more than 150 rare and exciting lots of collectors’ motor cars, motorcycles and automobilia. With several rare and special cars already consigned, we expect another incredible sale at the magnificent Grand Palais.”

Elsewhere, a spectacular 2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupé is offered, estimated at €1,800,000-2,000,000. When Mercedes-Benz first unveiled its CLK GTR in 1998, it sold for an astonishing $1.5 million, making it the most expensive production car ever, a figure only recently exceeded by the Ferrari FXX. Supplied new to Switzerland, chassis number ‘23’ has covered a mere 3,285km, making one of the rarest and most desirable Mercedes-Benz models of modern times in effectively ‘as new’ condition.

Further early consignments to the Grand Palais Sale include a Porsche Carrera GT, estimated at €800,000-1,000,000, a highly original 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, estimated at €350,000-450,000, a 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Speedster with less than 950km from new, estimated at €250,000-350,000, and an ultra rare original left hand drive 1964 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III Drophead Coupé, estimated at €380,000-540,000.

Bonhams Grand Palais Sale takes place in Paris on 4th February 2016.

Mio Transmitters from NRG Automation Seal More Deals

Garage door specialists have welcomed the huge amount of choice that NRG Automation have given them over the control of their garage doors.

As the UK’s leading supplier of control panels to the roller door industry NRG Automation continue to listen to the industry who sell automation packages via the handsets.

James Williams from Fast Fit Garage Doors said:
“Because I sell automation as an upgrade on site, the end user never sees the operator itself. I use the wide range of handsets that NRG Automation offer, to seal the deal. They literally have a way of controlling the door for every member of the family; plus what gives me even MORE CONTROL is that the handsets are also compatible with my roller door controller”.

NRG Automation are not a company to stop listening to you; they have therefore introduced another brand new handset, which will allow you even more ways of up-selling to the end user.

NRG Automation introduced a 4 button Mio handset earlier this year, which fits into their high end image. A number of companies who use the NRG Automation handsets in dynamic mode on their doors have requested a 2 button version and this is now available.
“Introducing the MIO handsets was a logical step for NRG Automation”, explains Andy Perry, “We are always looking for ways to improve the quality of our product and to make it easier to sell to the end user”.
For more information on exciting ways to control your garage door, and to give more choice to your customers please contact NRG Automation on 0151-424 8900 and to place orders e-mail sales@nrgauomation.co.uk

Steel screens offer an intoxicating aesthetic for wine cellars

Creating a striking contemporary look while allowing visibility and the passage of light between different areas, glazed steel partitions and doors from members of the Steel Window Association have many applications within commercial and residential buildings, including screening wine cellars.

In traditional wine cellars, the aesthetics of steel screens contrast well with those of the fabric of older buildings. Steel sections may be configured to create three quarter-height and full- height panels with 90 degree returns or curves while accommodating large or small glass panes.

Steel screens are highly versatile and each is bespoke so can be designed to fit specific spaces making them ideal where, for example, the screen needs to follow the profile of a vaulted ceiling. The screens and doors have the added benefit that they may be used to provide security and aid temperature control by dividing cellars.

Unlike timber or aluminium, steel sections are very slim and strong. Large glazed areas can be created along with opening French or single doors up to a height of 2.4m with fixed glazing above where extra height is required. Fixed partitions can be certified with up to 30 minutes fire integrity using appropriate fire-rated glass.

Screens can be factory-finished with a polyester powder coat applied in any RAL colour. Alternatively, an industrial raw steel finish is offered that shows up the details of the manufacturing process, including the welded joints.

For further information on the Steel Window Association, please visit www.steel-window-association.co.uk or call 0844 249 1355.

Build UK welcomes EFIA - the first fencing trade association to join their membership

EFIA Chairman, Bernard Kilbride

Build UK has welcomed EFIA, (European Fencing Industry Association), as the first fencing trade association to join their growing membership.

The voice of the fencing industry and renowned as a ‘hands-on organisation for a hands-on industry’, EFIA, has been serving the professional needs of the fencing industry since 1982 and has more than 80 members, including fencing contractors, manufacturers, stockists, installers, and other individuals and organisations involved within the industry.

Their members are typically companies at the top of their game, not only meeting their statutory obligations, but going much further in providing the highest quality of goods and services. The new partnership with Build UK will offer extended benefits to its – also growing – membership, as EFIA chairman, Bernard Kilbride, explains:
“Being accepted as a member of Build UK is a stringent process and we are therefore delighted to have joined them.” he said. “The new relationship will enable the forging of stronger links with the construction industry by becoming the Trade Association Partner representing the fencing industry, with the further benefits of working together significant on a number of levels.
In practical terms, our members can access Build UK’s various professional helplines which offer guidance on issues such as employment, health and safety, tax, business, training, legal matters and fair payment. This service isn’t one that we have formally offered to our members previously. We recognise the importance of being able to offer good quality advice to our members, so it’s a new and positive extension to EFIA’s current benefits.”
“In addition, the new partnership provides us with a crucial and direct link to Build UK’s members, with whom many of our own members will already be working. The opportunity for greater communication between all of our members is considerable and this can only be a good thing for the industry as a whole. We look forward to a productive partnership.”

Build UK’s Chief Executive, Suzannah Nichol MBE, said:
“I am delighted to welcome EFIA as the first new Trade Association to join Build UK. As the single representative voice for the contracting supply chain, Build UK represents the best of the construction industry. In meeting the stringent Trade Association membership criteria, EFIA now joins 27 Main Contractors and 40 other Trade Associations in providing a strong united voice for the whole construction sector.”

Keep Mail Safe from Prying Eyes with Securikey Post Boxes

Leading physical security supplier Securikey has extended its best-selling secure post box range with the addition of four new models.

The new sleek, weatherproof and corrosion-resistant post boxes have been expertly designed for outdoor environments to protect letters and small packets from theft or prying eyes. Offering both front and top loading options to meet different preferences, the new range features a high quality cam lock with two keys to keep contents secure from intruders but easily accessible to the key holder via the hinged door.

Each model in the Securikey post box range is constructed from galvanised steel with a tough black powder coated finish to give years of service. Incorporating many of the benefits offered by Securikey's existing HS High Security post box range, the new models feature a magnetic 'anti rattle' continuously hinged flap that minimises noise whilst preventing rain and dust from entering through the letter slot. Both sizes are suitable for wall mounting and will accept A4 mail comfortably.

The new post box models join Securikey's already established HS Post boxes, which are fitted with a Euro Profile cylinder to allow integration with existing 'single key' systems if desired. These systems simplify security by allowing building owners or managers to use the same key to access a variety of product types. Securikey products incorporating the Euro Profile include the best selling Euro Vault, the Keylex 700 Digital Door Lock (with key facility) and a variety of safes, emergency key holding boxes and key cabinet ranges.

For more information, please contact Securikey on 01252 311888, email enquiries@securikey.co.uk or go to securikey.co.uk
