Do the Maths! – Accoya® is amazing value, but firstly what is it?

Thetford Barnham in Pigeon Grey*

Woodrite’s Thetford range of garage doors is made from Accoya®.  Accoya® wood uses an extensively proven wood modification technique and leading-edge patented technology – acetylation - that creates a high-performance wood, ideal for outdoor use.

It is the go-to material for the building industry – the manufacturers state:

“Guaranteed for 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground or freshwater” – impressive!

Woodrite and their stain partner Teknos are consequently very confident in their 10-year warranty on the door’s finish!

It’s expensive though, right?

Here’s where things could take a turn for the worse, but it’s good news! “At our last price increase, we actually dropped the price of Accoya® Doors as a result of our better volume buying power. It now sits at a similar level to our Warwick range of Idigbo timber doors” Said Sharon Cleaver, Woodrite’s Sales Director.

Sharon continued, “It’s still a premium product, but when you do the maths and factor in that the price includes fully finishing, covered by a 10-year warranty, it represents amazing value”.

Thetford Harling Side-Hinged Door

Styles, colours and perfect for paint finishing

Woodrite’s Thetford range is available in eight popular styles in up and over, side hinged and personnel operation, all with matching frames if required. There are five standard colours, although, in typical Woodrite fashion, any shade can be matched with architectural details or other timber.

Accoya® is perfect for coating, its inherent stability means coatings last up to two times longer and paint finishes don’t suffer from tannin leaching through and discolouring the paint finish. Accoya® is also easier to coat and requires less preparation and sanding.

Thetford Harling Up and Over Door

“We always recommend Accoya® for doors that are to be paint finished. The current trend for Farrow & Ball heritage colours is something we are doing a lot of and Accoya® is the perfect base” added Sharon.

“It’s a truly remarkable product that only Woodrite offers and, once the wider market catches on to the new low pricing, an already strong seller is really going to take off! concluded Sharon.

Evanta Aston Martin DBR1 is on its way to auction

Silverstone Auctions is excited to announce that a very special Evanta Aston Martin DBR1 is coming to its May Sale on 19th May at Silverstone racing circuit.

Built as a near exact replica of the original Aston Martin DBR1, famed for its success during the late 1950’s in the hands of legends including Sir Stirling Moss and Carroll Shelby, the stunning recreation was crafted from scratch by the Evanta Motor Company, owned at the time by car designer and ‘Wheeler Dealers’ presenter, Ant Anstead.

The car comes to auction from the private collection of a high profile celebrity petrolhead with an auction estimate of £85,000 to £100,000.

Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions said:
“The Aston Martin DBR1 is an icon in British motor racing history, and this is one of the best replicas we’ve seen. This Evanta is a very special motorcar with unique provenance and offers exclusive and seriously cool summer motoring.”

The creation of the car was based on over 150 photographs of an original Aston Martin DBR1 with special attention to recreating the absolute correct Aston Martin Racing Green body and correct colour for the frame.

Inside the cockpit the car is almost indistinguishable from the original cars, even down to the hand painted crackle finish dashboard, which took dozens of attempts until a satisfactory finish was achieved. The seats were also made in the same materials as the original cars, whilst the period correct dials and steering wheel were fitted to retain authenticity.

Under the bonnet the Evanta DBR1 is currently fitted with a high compression 4.2 litre engine with de-Dion rear suspension and coil over front wishbones at the front, with 16” wire wheels fitted with special period reproduction Michelin tyres.

Silverstone Auctions was honoured to sell the car in 2014 to a known enthusiast and collector. The car returned to auction again in February 2016 and sold to its current owner, a high profile celebrity petrolhead, who has made a number of further mechanical enhancements to the car.

“The true value of a genuine DBR1 is believed to be in the region of £20m, making this Evanta DBR1 the closest many collectors can get to owning the legendary racing car. It’s an opportunity not to be missed!” concludes Nick.

Fears over ‘cowboy builders’ cost UK £10bn a year as homeowners opt for smaller upgrades

Homeowners are choosing small measures to improve their properties in a bid to avoid hiring ‘cowboy builders’ — resulting in losses of more than £10 billion a year to the UK economy.

Research by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB)[1] found that a third (32%) of homeowners are put off undertaking major improvements because they fear hiring an untrustworthy tradesperson.

As a result, homeowners are seeking smaller measures that improve the aesthetic of their property and add value without requiring major renovations.

Such changes include replacing doors, upgrading windows and changing the flooring in selected rooms.

Residents are often more comfortable hiring professionals to perform smaller renovations because they present less financial risk due to shorter turnaround times and lower costs.

The research shows that if there was full confidence in the building industry, a single property owner would spend an average of £40,000 over five years on home improvement projects.

And this figure increases to £67,000 for those living in London.

Joe Halsall, Digital Marketing Manager at Origin, said:
“Following the recent trend for television shows exposing ‘cowboy builders’, it’s little wonder that public confidence in tradespeople has plummeted.
“Whether you’re investing in a brand new bathroom suite or a set of bi-fold doors, you’ve a right to know it’ll be installed by someone who’s reputable and reliable.
“That’s why some suppliers work closely with trades people— offering transparency to their customers so they can check the credentials beforehand and have confidence in who they’re letting into their home to do the job.”

To receive the best service, consumers are recommended to use suppliers whose trade partners are fully trained in the installation of the product in question. Other checks to perform include studying reviews from previous customers and ensuring that any trade partner is registered with its supplier as a ‘trusted partner’.

Previous research from the FMB also exposed alarming numbers of people who fail to ask for vital documents, with 90% of builders reporting that most homeowners do not demand a written contract.

But for homeowners who decide to invest in major improvements there is a number of recommendations that will help ensure they are hiring a trustworthy and fully qualified professional.

These include researching reliable tradespeople online, asking for contracts and quotes in writing and avoiding ‘cash-in-hand’ arrangements.

Looking for a builder who is a member of a recognised regulatory trade body, such as the FMB, is also a good indicator of reputation.  Some trade organisations also give out certain guarantees; businesses registered with glazing bodies Fensa and Certass are required to give a 10-year guarantee on all installations.

“It’s clear that many property owners have money to spend on home improvements,” Joe added. “By taking the proper precautions, such as researching tradespeople online or commissioning a supplier that employs reputable trade partners, there’s no reason why people shouldn’t have peace of mind when improving the look and value of their home.”

Alpro at Fred Perry Headquarters

IDF Aluminium has installed doors and internal screenwork at the new headquarters of iconic sportswear brand Fred Perry in Clerkenwell, London.

The work includes use of transom door closers, pole handles and door handles from Alpro as part of the renovation of nineteenth-century warehouse buildings into a complex of offices, showrooms, exhibition space and a rooftop deck over 24,000 square feet.

The project extends across seven floors and the client gave all contractors a brief that the site should benefit from robust security but preserve a welcoming atmosphere and an aesthetic that respected the fabric of the original Victorian warehouses.

Alpro’s overhead transom closers provide a means of hydraulically controlling the opening and closing of aluminium doors and can have light, medium or heavy spring strengths to suit type of usage, with a 90-degree hold-open option. Transom closers are well suited for use at industrial heritage buildings such as the Fred Perry premises since the alternative options of spring hinges and floor springs often present problems with adjustment flexibility.

The IDF installation also includes Alpro’s Functional 98 Series pull door handles on internal doors. These are manufactured from 316-grade stainless steel and can be straight or offset. The handles are supplied with bolt-thru or back-to-back fixings as standard and powder or nylon-coated finishes to the user’s precise colour requirements. In this case a powder finish was chosen to match the framework.

The Fred Perry base is located on the corner of Mount Pleasant Street and Warner Street opposite the former Mount Pleasant sorting office. The many considerations for architects BuckleyGrayYeoman included preserving an iconic façade and working round plaques commemorating damage suffered by the building during World-War-II bombing.

The interior fit-out including m & e systems was by Overbury and the base build contractor was Willmott Dixon. The new space was prepared to a demanding four-month deadline.

IDF Aluminium specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of aluminium doors. The door solutions are designed for use in commercial and public-sector environments where usage may be high but maintenance costs must be minimised.

The company has 30 years’ experience in the shop front and commercial door market. IDF Aluminium ensures a quality service by designing and fabricating all its doors and shop fronts in-house with no use of sub-contractors.

The client portfolio covers transport, local government, healthcare and education from schools through to universities. This is IDF’s second heritage architecture project using Alpro equipment and follows works at Henry Wood House, a former BBC property in Marylebone.

F.Bamford endorses Securefast Mortice Electro-Magnetic Lock in successful STS202 test

One of the UK’s leading names in security doors and access controls, Stockport based Bamford Doors has announced their successful attainment of STS202 Burglary Resistance Level 2 with their latest Communal Aluminium Door and Frame, incorporating the all new Securefast AEM12000R standard grade 3 monitored mortice Electro-Magnetic Lock.

Addressing the demand for greater security resistance, particularly on entrance doors, F Bamford commissioned the Securefast Electro-Magnetic lock for their test door, based on the lock’s impressive minimum holding force of 4.2Kn and certified testing to TS010:2016, which verifies the products grade 3 security standard and 200,000 cycle performance.

Carried out at leading test house Exova (Wednesbury), the STS202 testing allows for the use of common hand tools and levers, in addition to physical force in the attempt to open the door. The test is designed to emulate an attack by an opportunist criminal on the doors locking points using simple tools that could be concealed in a pocket or under a jacket. Burglaries at this level tend to occur when time is a factor and the noise level needs to be kept to a minimum.

With a commitment to supplying fully tested and certified products wherever possible, the Securefast range of mortice, transom housings and face fixed Electro-magnetic locks have been third party certified to EN1634-1 fire testing for 30 and 60 minute timber doors, ensuring that the Securefast name the first choice in locking solutions for fire rated doors. The Securefast objective is to provide all customers with complete confidence and quality consistency throughout their wide range of products.

For further information on the AEM12000R Electro-magnetic mortice locks or to receive details on the Securefast range of security and access control products, please contact the sales team on 01704 502801 or visit the web site www.securefast.co.uk

‘Factory-prepared doorsets are the way forward’ says DHF following investigation into Grenfell

DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) has re-issued its call for the use of factory-prepared doorsets in the wake of recent findings regarding the Grenfell tragedy.

It was reported last month that a police investigation has found a number of the doors to flats in Grenfell Tower did not meet test standards and could only hold back a fire for half the time they were designed to: just 15 minutes as opposed to 30 minutes.

The test was conducted as part of a Metropolitan Police review into the fire in West London which killed 71 people last June.  Since the tragedy, DHF has released a number of recommendations pertaining to the need for increased fire safety in multi-occupancy buildings such as tower blocks and office buildings and stressing the vital importance of compartmentation and the grave risks of getting it wrong.

The Tamworth-based trade association believes that installing a complete factory-prepared doorset that has been tested as a complete unit, manufactured under a third-party certification scheme, installed and maintained by companies certified to do so under third-party certification, provides a plethora of benefits, namely, safety, peace of mind, reduced installation time and ultimately, costs.

In February, DHF produced a comprehensive guide to the benefits of ‘factory prepared complete timber doorsets’ in a bid to raise awareness of their many advantages, most importantly, fire safety.  And the organisation has also urged the UK to follow Europe’s lead in providing more thorough fire door maintenance procedures, which can ultimately, save lives.

DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry explains:
“We find the results of the Metropolitan Police’s recent investigation extremely troubling,” explained DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry.
“Fire doors are an integral part of the fire strategy for any building.   Properly installed and maintained, a fire door will achieve its specified fire resistance which could be anything between 30 minutes and four hours, depending on location, providing vital and life-saving minutes in the event of a fire.
“We wholeheartedly recommend the use of factory-prepared complete doorsets whose components have been tested together and – when correctly manufactured, installed and maintained by trained personnel – will meet the necessary fire safety requirements.
“We would also once again encourage landlords and large housing providers such as local authorities and housing associations to be completely aware of their legal and moral responsibilities in ensuring that their premises provide protection and keep their residents safe.”

The CSCS Skilled Worker Card – What You Need To Know

In this article Pete Whyatt – a qualified NVQ Assessor at P.A.W. Solutions -explains the situation regarding the CSCS Skilled Worker Card and what you need to do to get this vital document.

As someone who works closely with the door and gate sector, I encounter a lot of confusion regarding the CSCS Skilled Worker Card. This is unsurprising, as there is not enough conversation going on about this issue in the industry. People don’t understand what they need - and many trade bodies and association don’t either, which is leading to confusion and conflicting information.

This is what you need to know:

To work unsupervised on most construction sites - and many other areas - you now need to prove occupational competence. This means holding a CSCS Skilled Worker Card. And to get this card you must first complete an NVQ L2 qualification.

For the door and gate sector, there are two relevant qualifications - one covers the installation of products (QUA800) and the other covers the repair of products (QUB800). You can choose either or both. Each qualification also includes product service and maintenance.

The NVQ is a competence-based qualification and is based on National Occupational Standards (NOS). These standards are statements of performance that describe what competent people in an occupation are expected to be able to do.

The NVQ is achieved through assessment by an industry-qualified assessor. At the end of the assessment process, when the assessor has gained sufficient evidence of competence, a certificate claim will be put forward to the awarding body and, subject to satisfactory validation, the qualification certificate will be awarded.

As soon as the award is made, you can apply for the CSCS Skilled Worker Card.

The process

An NVQ qualification is an assessment of your competence, so you will need to be suitably experienced in your trade. The qualification demands at least one product from the NOS be covered, however you can be assessed against more. These products, known as endorsements, will be shown on the rear of your CSCS card. Your assessor will carry out initial profiling and discuss the endorsements required with you.

These can be any or all of the following:
  • Vertically sliding industrial/commercial doors
  • Vertically rolling industrial/commercial doors
  • Horizontally acting industrial/commercial doors, gates and barriers
  • Fire resisting industrial/commercial doors
  • Domestic garage doors with panel construction
  • Domestic garage doors with rolling construction
  • Domestic garage doors - power operated
  • Manual pedestrian slide, swing and folding doors
  • Fire resisting pedestrian doors
  • Power operated pedestrian slide, swing and folding doors
  • Gates and barriers
  • Swing and folding doors

After successful initial profiling, you will be registered for the qualification and issued a registration number.

You can then apply for a temporary Experienced Worker CSCS card. This lasts for one year - is not renewable - and allows you access to site during your qualification process. You must also pass the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment test in order to get this card.

You will then spend time being assessed through on the job observations and questioning. This allows your assessor to produce evidence that proves you have the competence to meet the necessary standards.

The assessment must take place onsite under actual working conditions – no simulation is allowed.

You will need to achieve several units that make up the full NVQ qualification. Some of the units are mandatory and must be completed, others are optional.

The qualification is for life. You only need to go through this process once and then you are free to work in the industry.

What the law says

There is no escaping this requirement, as the old CRO (Construction Related Occupation) cards are being withdrawn. If you have one issued from 1st October 2015, this expired on 30th September 2017 and is not renewable. If you have a CRO card issued prior to 1st October 2015, this will remain valid only until the card expiry date.

Or, to renew a CSCS card previously gained through Industry Accreditation (so called Grandfather Rights), such as the Blue Skilled Worker card, you will now need to prove you have the appropriate training and qualifications required to do your job.

There are other cards bearing the CSCS logo, which can be can be gained by passing an online test and show the holder has an understanding of the safety standards doors and gates should meet. But these do not cover installation and repair, or the ability of the cardholder to work on a construction site unsupervised. These cards can be accepted as partial evidence towards the NVQ qualification, but construction sites should insist on the Skilled Worker card.

The message is that everyone needs to work safely and legally – and the best way to ensure that is by holding a CSCS Skilled Worker Card.

Visibly different, exceptional operation: Centor® launches new 345 Folding Door

Cleverly concealed locks and hinges create an elegant door that allows you to focus on the view.

Centor is launching a new folding door that’s intended to provide the perfect contemporary finish for modern homes. Taking elements from award-winning Centor Integrated Doors, and adding some new innovations, the 345 Folding Door is visibly different – from the inside looking out, all hardware is concealed so there are no visual distractions to the views beyond.

Setting a new standard in bi-fold door design, Centor’s 345 Folding Doors feature the same panels and concealed hardware as its 405 Integrated contemporaries but with a smaller frame, like a standard folding door. Concealed hinges have long been a major attraction of Integrated Doors as they provide rooms with an uncluttered backdrop.

The new Access AutoLatchTM is a key differentiator for Centor 345 Folding Doors. This cleverly concealed lever replaces the traditional interior door handle and is hidden from view in the door stile.  The lever is simply lifted to open the doors from the inside. On the exterior, a slimline vertical pull-handle allows panels to be opened with ease.

As well as removing clutter from the interior face, the Access AutoLatchTM allows doors with 2 panels left or 2 panels right to have full key access from the outside. “You can only achieve this kind of functionality with our concealed Access AutoLatchTM,” explains Peter Watkins, General Manager of Centor Europe

The Centor AutoLatchTM is used to close and secure intermediate panels in one movement, with one hand. Centor’s Folding Doors open and close with smooth fingertip operation that’s reminiscent of closing the door of a high-quality motor car, according to Paul, an architect. He adds: “When you close the door on an Aston Martin it feels good. When you open and close these doors, they feel good.”

Single panels can be folded back a full 180º to create completely clear openings.

Constructed from thermally-improved aluminium, Centor 345 Folding Doors are engineered to last a lifetime. Featuring rigid square-cut corners, all extrusions are painted after cutting and machining to ensure the highest levels of corrosion resistance.

With the launch of the 345 Folding Door, Centor continues its tradition of “offering something that’s not only different to other products, but also higher quality,” says one discerning customer. Homeowner Lucy explains: “We can fold our doors right back to maximise the view and all the hardware is completely hidden, so the inside of the doors look very sleek.”

Centor 345 Folding Doors are manufactured to individual specifications. They can be experienced at home exhibitions and Centor Dealer showrooms throughout England and Ireland. They will debut at Grand Designs Live in London on stand B360, from May 5-13.

Visit centor.com for more information.

How E-Type UK Transforms British Icon to modern standards while retaining Heritage

One of the most iconic and beautiful cars of all time, the Jaguar E-Type is a hugely desirable model for classic vehicle enthusiasts and lovers of the British automotive industry.

However, with the first cars being created over half a century ago in 1961, some aren’t the perfect proposition for modern, everyday driving; this is where E-Type UK comes in.

E-Type UK is one of the world’s leading authorities for all things Jaguar E-Type – from restoring and servicing all the way through to selling – and it offers the finest upgrades to bring the legendary Jaguar into the 21st century.

The Kent-based business is renowned for pioneering the E-Type fuel injection system and has been at the forefront of development to bring products to market. It has built considerable knowledge and expertise in both V12 and XK systems and offers both to provide the ultimate driving experience.

Using original Jaguar XJS throttle bodies and manifolds on the V12 and newly designed set-ups on the XK, the systems are fitted to the highest standards with consideration applied to the most intricate of details.

A modern ECU is integrated into the car’s wiring using a bespoke loom; ensuring the unmistakable character of the original V12 and XK E-Types are retained. Not only do E-Type UK’s fuel injection systems provide increased power, they also offer hugely improved drivability, throttle response and reliability.

E-Type UK’s five-speed gearbox upgrade is another that has proved very popular with the company’s passionate clientele, providing that all-important fifth gear and adding more positivity to the gear change.

Built from cast aerospace-grade aluminium, the gearbox fits exactly the same as the original four-speed set-up and uses the existing bell housing, prop shaft, speedo, speedo cable and angle drive.

The engine and original gearbox are removed during the process, and E-Type UK’s talented team inspects all associated parts – including the clutch, master and slave cylinders, bearings and engine hoses – to ensure vehicles are completed to the highest possible standards.

Fuel injection systems and the five-speed gearbox are just two of the upgrade options that E-Type UK offers, with the expert team also able to make braking, suspension, exhaust, cooling, ignition, air filter and alternator upgrades as well as bespoke customisations to cars for clients.

Marcus Holland, Owner/Managing Director of E-Type UK, said:
“At E-Type UK, we pride ourselves on offering the very best service around and providing enthusiasts with the ultimate E-Type driving experience, no matter what they’re looking for. Our incredible team is second to none when it comes to E-Type upgrades and they are known in the E-Type community for delivering the perfect solution for modern driving. Customers come to us wanting their E-Type to improve in a certain area, and our team can always deliver the goods.”

Abloy UK Relaunches Foundations Plus Course

Security expert Abloy UK has relaunched its popular Abloy Foundations Plus course, which covers minimum performance standards, Dynamic Lockdown and the Constructions Product Regulations.

The Foundations course covers the majority of standards applicable to doorsets - from hinges to door selectors - and helps delegates to understand the needs of a door, from its location within the building to the purpose the door must fulfil.

The Foundations Plus course is an advanced add-on to the Foundations course, going one step further in educating delegates on industry terminology. This provides attendees with the knowledge to specify products that are suitable for both the application and door type.

The course covers the locking and escape requirements for access control electric locking in both retrofit and new build applications, ensuring a safe and secure solution. Enrolment on the Foundations Plus course is subject to having successfully completed the Foundations course.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, said:
“The first relaunched Foundations Plus course was successfully hosted at ASSA ABLOY UK headquarters on Friday 23rd February 2018, with a full house of customers and specifiers.
“The course utilises the theory and knowledge gained from the Foundations course to ensure the correct specification of compliant electric locking solutions for access control doors. It provides an excellent link from the Foundations course to Abloy’s more advanced training modules such as Electric Locking.
“Foundations and Foundations Plus can both be used to gain valuable CPD points, so we encourage anyone involved in the specification of doors and access control solutions – whether you’re an installer, security manager, lock centre, end-user or specifier - to get involved.”
Abloy Foundations Plus Course 2018 Dates as follows:

Friday 25th May
Friday 27th July
Friday 19th October

For further information on products and services available from Abloy UK or to book a place on one of the courses, visit www.abloy.co.uk/academy, call 01902 364 500, or email academy@abloy.co.uk.

In with the Old Hill Ironworks: A Perry launches market leading black antique ironmongery range

Reinforcing its long established West Midlands roots, A Perry & Co (Hinges) Ltd, a leading independent, family-owned British manufacturer and supplier, is introducing Old Hill Ironworks, a high-quality door furniture range which specialises in black antique ironmongery originating from the heart of the Black Country.

The products are designed to appeal to consumers through their premium components, superior finish, 12-year mechanical guarantee plus pricing which potentially delivers higher profit margins for distributors and stockists.

Endorsing the company’s commitment to excellent standards, Old Hill Ironworks has been salt spray tested for a market leading 700 hours to guarantee its extended reliability.

Staying true to A Perry’s traditions of quality manufacturing, Old Hill Ironworks is created using high-quality malleable steel which makes it more flexible and less brittle and likely to break. With a protective inner coating and a strong, robust UV colour fast 'first use' outer coating, the range offers a superior industry leading finish.

The high-quality innovative products are the result of precision engineering and are designed to bring an elegance and style to every doorway, satisfying the market’s strictest requirements. The collection includes lever handles; mortice knobs; pull handles; gate furniture; front door fittings; window fittings; cabinet hardware; tee hinges and hinge fronts.

Ian Dunnaker, company director, says:
"The name of the range is a tribute to the early days of the company, which started over four generations ago at the ironworks in Old Hill. The style and elegance of the Old Hill Ironworks range lies in the attention to detail we have taken in designing this durable range which will stand the test of time.
"The malleable cast iron we chose to work with has the best shock resistance and is ductile, making it the ideal material to work with. In addition, the product’s stainless-steel mechanism allows for a softer and more progressive lever operation. We are confident that our offering will enable distributors to benefit from increased sales and higher profit margins."

A trade only supplier, A Perry & Co is challenging industry standards by investing in and creating professional merchandising and POS options to complement the door furniture range.

These include merchandiser stands, display boards, handle plinths, posters featuring lifestyle imagery and entrance decals, all designed to help the distributor gain sales. Perry is also offering great dealer incentives, with distributors encouraged to contact Perry to see what great offers they can benefit from.

Endorsing Perry’s ‘green’ commitment, the range has new eye-catching, retail and user-friendly packaging, which is recyclable and reusable. Underlining the company’s commitment to its distributors, Perry will also supply the leads generated from advertising and PR and will offer technical support to retailers and their customers, assisting, if required, to gain large complex contracts and orders.
