Sapa’s STII Door goes from Strength to Strength

The STII commercial door has been well received by the market and sales continue to grow across all sectors. Further product enhancements have now been introduced, maintaining its position as one of the best thermally broken commercial door solutions available today.

Double pivot doors, typically used on communal entrances, are now available with master leaf electromagnetic locking, adding to its already extensive range of PAS 24 certified options. Further PAS24 options are also available including dual deadlocks, multipoint locking and panic exit devices.

The STII door now also has its own framing solution, simplifying the creation and inclusion of side light and other composite elements. Key to this is the introduction of a continuously drained threshold, allowing the direct fixing of door and frame elements to one single profile. The framing system also provides half mullion profiles, which allows for offsite fabrication and coupling at installation.

Additionally, the development of new glazing beads eases the installation of glazing door widths of up to 46mm and a new heavy-duty transom profile has been introduced to simplify the mounting of auto door opening gear.

With pivot or rebated options for doors up to 3 metres high and 1.17 metres wide as well as Uw ratings as low as 1.9W/m²k, the STII system has all you need and more in a commercial door.

Legendary Maserati goes under the Hammer

The legendary 1959 Maserati Tipo 60/61 ‘Birdcage’ which was prepared for racing by Alfred Momo is to be sold by international car auctioneers Coys at their Schloss Dyck auction in Germany on the 4th of August.

This historic Maserati is a light and powerful sports racer produced in 1959-1960 that exhibits superb aerodynamics. It acquired its nickname ‘Birdcage’ because of the exceptional design engineered by Giulio Alfieri. It has an intricate tubular frame and chassis made up of approximately 200 small diameters, chrome-molybdenum steel tubes of varying lengths and thicknesses welded together with a unique Italian process.

In 2010 the car was submitted to the MSA, and gained its Historic Technical Passport/FIA class: TSRC4 documents, allowing it to be raced in many different venues throughout the world which could even include Classic Le Mans, Goodwood Revival, and Motor Racing Legends Stirling Moss Trophy at various circuits globally.

Chris Routledge, CEO of Coys said:
“This car offers a collector a chance to own a unique race car. It is going to be sold with a large amount of documentation, photographs, full rebuild invoices from Steve Hart Racing and confirmation of the cars original components used directly from Momo.”

Another one of Giulio Alffieri’s epic design on sale is a 1963 Maserati 3500 GTi Superleggera by Touring. The car is finished in arguably the best colour combination for a 3500 – gunmetal grey over red this wonderful example of the marque is also reported to be in excellent mechanical order. Its estimate is €178,875.

The 1921 Wolseley 200-Mile Record Car Evocation was built by one of Britain’s biggest motorcar manufacturer at the outbreak of World War One, Wolseley. This car was acquired by Stephen Battye for his impressive Yorkshire Car Museum during 2003, it was carefully stripped and reassembled after a period of dry storage. It is now on sale and estimates €35,000- €42,000.

Also going under the hammer is one of only 576 made in the Magna line; a 1933 MG L-Type Magna Tourer. It was first registered in Germany in 1986. This Magna had only three previous owners in Germany; in 1999 the engine was overhauled for 7,700 DM. This fantastic MG Magna subsequently went on to win the historic Klausen mountain race. It estimates €60,000- €80,000.

Other cars on sale:

1977 Maserati Bora 4.9 – An excellent restored and desirable 4.9 specification car, mechanically rebuilt, just serviced and in excellent all-round condition. Estimate: €140,000- €180,000.

2003 Porsche 996 GT3 CUP - This GT3 was produced and delivered as a proper GT3 CUP car and campaigned in 23 races in Europe, as shown in its DMSB – Wagenpass. The engine was rebuilt 500 kms ago as was the gearbox. Its total mileage is less than 14,000 kms. Estimate: €60,000- €70,000.

Why the latest computer hack could catch you with your pants down

Just as a good pickpocket can steal your belt without you feeling it, the latest computer hack is in danger of catching any business user with their pants down – and at first they won’t feel a thing.

That’s because this hack is invisible. It looks nothing like a hack at all, says Humber region IT systems and software supplier HBP Systems. Even the most sophisticated cyber security won’t stop it, and it succeeds because it preys on the weakest point in any computer system: the operator.

Every computer user now faces this most sophisticated form of phishing, and it’s as simple as it’s devastating, says HBP Systems Operations Director Tony Pearson.

How the scam works
Tony explains: “This is the most devious phishing hack yet. No cyber security system will stop it because, as far as the computer is concerned, it’s a genuine email from a trusted source. An email from a colleague will land in your email inbox with a request for you to follow a link to gain access to a file. Click on it, and you’ll be asked for some system log in details. Because you trust the sender, you fill in the log in fields, at which point you’ve passed that data to a criminal organisation.
“What’s more, the software will send similar emails to everyone in your database, repeating the process with their computer, and then the computers of everyone in their databases too.
“Nothing will happen at first; after all, it’s just some login details. But eventually those details could be used to distribute and plant ransomware on your system, or that of one of your contacts, and a new nightmare begins.”

How to defeat it
“None of the normal checks work. There will be no ‘dodgy’ email addresses or oddly-named links to spot. The email signature and sign-off will be perfect. None of the normal tell-tale signs that people ought to be looking out for will be there.
“But it’s a question of applying due diligence; of being suspicious. Ask yourself: ‘Why is this person sending me an email?’ ‘Am I expecting a file?’ ‘Why didn’t they say something about this earlier; we were in a meeting together an hour ago?’
“If you weren’t expecting an emailed file, even though it doesn’t look ‘wrong’, pick up the phone and ask the sender if the message is genuine. They’ll tell you at once, and you’ll be able to deal with it accordingly. And don’t forward it to anyone. The person you send it to might not be as vigilant as you,” he added.

Did you miss the Launch of our Summer 2018 Issue?

With the UK sizzling in the midst of a heatwave, what better time to sit down in the shade and read the latest issue of the DIJ.

You are probably either looking forward to your holidays or already counting the days until the children go back to school! Either way, there’s plenty of reading inside to help you sit back and relax.

If you design or manufacture doors, doorsets or windows for sale in the UK, it is essential that they meet minimum regulated requirements. In a fiercely competitive market, they must also be tested for certain beneficial performance characteristics to verify your marketing claims.

To find out more about testing and third-party certification with Exova, go to page 6 to read more.

We are frequently asked by our readers and contributors, what effect Brexit will have on standards and legislation.

Michael Skelding, General Manager and Secretary of the Door & Hardware Federation, attempts to clarify some of the issues on page 8.

The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) are delighted to announce that DOM UK are to sponsor MLA Expo 2019, which will take place at Telford International Centre between 4th to 6th of October 2019.

Turn to page 12 for more information on how to book your stand!

And on page 60, there’s an article about the new Garamatic Canopy Operator which has been designed specifically to automate Garador’s extensive range of canopy up and over garage doors.

So, make the most of the sunshine while it lasts and pack us in your suitcase with your sunglasses.

Happy reading, but before you go.....

My personal thanks, as ever, goes to all our readers, advertisers and contributors for your support in producing this issue.

And on behalf of "Team DIJ", we all look forward to continuing to keep our readers engaged and assisting companies of all sizes with their publicity requirements in our next issue.

Padlocks for the construction industry

Nothing But Padlocks stock a wide range of padlocks, from leading manufacturers, that can be used in the construction industry and a variety of other businesses.

For ease of access in environments with multiple users, most businesses in the UK look toward a combination padlock.

Some of the popular ones include the SquireHeavy Duty Combination Padlock series. If you’re looking for added security have a look at the Abus190CS series can be used to secure gates, lockboxes and compounds.

Another popular weatherproof combination padlock is the Abus158 series that comes in a long shackle version.

If you need something with a bit more security a key system would be better to be used. “keyed alike” padlocks essentially mean that the same key will open multiple padlocks.

A lot of purchasers go with this system. There are a great number of choices including the budget options of the Abus65IB series.

With the increasing expense of brass in the marketplace, the future lies with Titalium padlocks and the likes of the Abus64TI series.

Titalium is an alloy of aluminium and titanium. It is anticipated that in a few years most customers will switch to Titalium padlocks as the price of brass padlocks increases.

There may well be a need to secure a gate, lock box or doorway where you only want one key to open the padlock it comes with. You could then choose a “keyed different” padlock.

The padlock may need to be weatherproof if it is near sea/saltwater environments, you may look at something like the Abus65IB series discussed earlier or the Abus70IB for even more outdoor protection. This padlock is distinctive due to its specialist plastic impact resistant outer coating with a removable cap to protect the lock mechanism.

Sometimes though, a higher level of security is required to protect things that are insured. Nothing But Padlocks have a range of high-security padlocks that can meet these demands. Such as the AbusExtreme padlocks that have a CEN insurance rating and are weatherproof.

This padlock is CEN insurance rated to level 3, but also available are padlocks rated through the levels up to and including CEN level 6. Have a look at the advice on CEN grading to see what kind of tests are completed on the padlocks.

The Abus Extreme padlock immediately benefits from a closed shackle design due to the high shoulders. There are also hasp and staples available to suit different doors. For example, the Abusvertical hasp and staple allows for closed shackle padlocks to fit the hasp and staple.

These high-security padlocks can come with a “key it twice” service that allows the customer to have a secondary set of keys that can be used to disable the first set of keys.

The padlocks can be purchased in bulk if required and there are varying levels of discounts for each product. Extra keys can be added to the order and reordered easily. Next day delivery via courier is available for faster shipping.

Opening the Doors to a Shoppers’ Paradise

GEZE UK is opening doors to more shoppers at Glasgow Fort which has recently launched a third phase of shops and leisure facilities at its out-of-town shopping and leisure complex.

With more than 100 outlets and parking for 2,500, Glasgow Fort is noted for being one of the few purpose-built uncovered shopping villages with a two-sided mall design intended to recreate a traditional high street.

That’s why installing the right doors were crucial in the design and specification of the new phase – not only to protect the new stores from the elements – but to maintain the fluidity of the stainless steel and glass aesthetic within its horseshoe layout.

The latest 175,000 sq ft extension – designed by Glasgow architects Cooper Cromar for owner British Land - includes an 80,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer department store housed within an iconic three-storey stainless steel-clad pavilion.

The store entrance has four sets of automatic sliding doors, powered by GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT operators, to form a draught lobby and display area. The Slimdrive SL NT blends seamlessly into the uncluttered glazed frontage. With an operator height of just 7cm – it is almost invisible, virtually silent in operation and can move leaf weights of up to 125kg - ideal for buildings with high levels of footfall and a continuous flow of people moving in various directions.

GEZE UK worked with Gray & Dick Ltd and Greenfield Contracting to create the entrances for M&S and seven other shops and restaurants on the north of the site where the new development is located.

They include:
  • Fat Face
  • Footasylum
  • JD Sports
  • Mamas & Papas
  • River Island
  • Wagamama
  • Waterstones

In total 12 GEZE products were supplied. In most cases the Slimdrive SL NTs were used to create the entrances for the units. Fat Face, Footasylum, Mamas & Papas, River Island, Wagamama and Waterstones chose seamless entrances, each with a pair of automatic sliding doors which provided flow and continuity with their glazed façades.

For JD Sports, a much larger unit, two Slimdrive SLT telescopic automatic sliding door operators were used to create two entrances across the span of its frontage – each fixed to glass. Like the Slimdrive SL NT, they operate quietly and boast an elegant drive design with a 7cm operator height.

Said Martin Revie, general manager for GEZE UK in Scotland:

“This was a fascinating project on which to work. Glasgow Fort has become a ‘go-to’ destination for shopping and leisure in the region as it combines great facilities and shops, with an open, airy environment and contemporary design.
“The third phase of the development needed to combine the requirements of the businesses going into the new premises and incorporate functionality, safety and security while retaining the aesthetic values of the development as a whole.”

For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic and manual door closers call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk.

P C Henderson Release New Twinbolt Locking System

Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer – P C Henderson – has launched its new Twinbolt locking system for use with its leading exterior door hardware system, Securefold.

Twinbolt is a sophisticated locking system for exterior folding doors whereby one simple turn of a handle engages a 22mm throw to securely lock the doors at the top and bottom of the system. Designed as a stylish and more concealed alternative to flush bolts, which require manual locking in two separate areas, the product is set to be a popular addition to the range.

New features include the system being able to work with any euro cylinder lock meaning installers have the freedom and flexibility to use their preferred choice of lock – as well as an increased throw of 22mm, providing added security. This feature also provides installers with greater flexibility in regards to the gap between the door and the frame, an important factor due to timber doors often expanding and contracting after installation.

A range of accessories are available to add to the refinement of the product including a stylish Malta Handle Kit and routing rubber cover strips available in a variety of colours. Finer details such as the inclusion of a factory set handle height (1050mm) and easy adjustment of the top lock rod - to suit standard and non-standard doors heights - demonstrates the high standard of design and manufacturing from P C Henderson.

Andrew Royle, Sales and Marketing Director at P C Henderson, commented:
“Although the previous version of Twinbolt worked extremely well, customer feedback told us that it required increased flexibility. Impressive Track Record with London Underground and Crossrail Projects for AASD

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, has secured a series of high-profile contracts with Transport for London and Crossrail Limited.

These contracts have included supplying and installing security doors for major London Underground redevelopments including London Bridge, Bond Street and King’s Cross, as well as station upgrades such as Victoria.

ASSA ABLOY Security Doors has then gone on to secure multiple contracts within the Crossrail construction programme. The new Transport for London-run Elizabeth line, built by Crossrail Limited, will open from December 2018 serving 10 newly-built accessible stations.

Full doorset solutions have been delivered and installed to the new Elizabeth line stations at Canary Wharf, Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Woolwich and Custom House. They have also been installed at other sites along the route including Pudding Mill, Eleanor Street and Mile End, as well as at the Elizabeth line depot at Old Oak Common.

Each project presented its own demands and challenges in relation to product performance requirements. Doorsets had to be fully compliant to achieve the latest standards and meet the specialist needs of each environment. Factors to consider included fire, acoustics, air tightness, high-security and pressure resistance.

Decorative finishes such as vitreous enamel, stainless-steel and bronze cladding helped complement the aesthetics of the surroundings on doors that required a finishing touch, and many of the doorsets required installation in challenging conditions, being underground, with tight access and with restricted working hours.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, said:
“Our experience working with London Underground provided us with the ideal foundation for supporting our working partners on the Crossrail project for new Elizabeth line stations.
“Each contract brought its own individual challenges, but from the very beginning we worked closely with the architects and contractors involved to understand their requirements. This meant we could provide specialist and tailored solutions that met their exact needs.
“Solutions were carefully chosen from both our Powershield and Prima steel door ranges including cross corridor doors for high traffic fire escape routes, and pivoted fire rated platform doors to conceal station equipment rooms.
“We take great pride in our wide portfolio of well-respected transport contracts. It says a great deal that customers choose to work with us time and time again, and we put this down to our full-service offering, financial stability, and expert advice at every stage of the project, from specification to installation and inspection.”

HOPPE (UK) Ltd becomes first manufacturer certified by Element under new STS217 scheme

Element Materials Technology (Element), which acquired Exova Group Limited (Exova) last year to create one, world-class global testing services partner, has announced that HOPPE (UK) Ltd is the first manufacturer to become certified under its newly introduced STS217 certification scheme for TS007 lever handles.

The STS217 certification scheme, which tests security handles for burglar resistance, is a recent addition to the testing offering at Element’s supersite in Wednesbury.

The process involves a manual attack test, designed to combat cylinder snapping – one of the quickest and most popular methods of breaking into doors and windows. The successful testing will certify HOPPE (UK)’s handles as a secure product.

John Prosser, marketing services for product range and assortment at HOPPE (UK), said:
“HOPPE (UK) is committed to ensuring its products are tested to the highest standards. The STS217 certification scheme is a fantastic way to prove to our customers that our products won’t be compromised by common methods of attack used by opportunist burglars.
“As TS007 is one of the only standards to cover the retrofit market, it also allows us to offer our customers a more flexible approach to retrofitting security hardware without having to worry about performance.”

Rob Veitch, EVP Fire & Building Products at Element, comments:
“Element is leading the way in door and window testing in the UK and has some of the foremost expertise in the industry. We are committed to offering our clients a complete range of testing services approved to the very highest levels of excellence.

“Now that HOPPE (UK) Ltd has become certified under the scheme, buyers can have confidence that its handles have gone through a rigorous testing process, are of the best quality and functionality and, most importantly, are burglar resistant.”

Element provides security testing of external doors and windows, to PAS24 and European burglary resistance standards. The expert teams provide assessments of security performance based on existing test evidence and agreed principles.
