DHF Continues to Support Fire Safety Initiatives, Four Years Since Grenfell

It has been four years since the Grenfell Tower fire, which claimed 72 lives.  The inquiry is continuing, and the English building regulations are still largely unchanged.  Many in the fire door industry,  including DHF, are feeling frustrated at what appears to be slow progress, although with some of the systemic problems that are being addressed, there is hope.

For example, the recent passage of the Fire Safety Act 2021 (covering England and Wales) has clarified the responsibility for fire safety inspections of flat entrance doors. This amends the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, specifying that the “responsible person” under the Order is responsible for, among other things, flat entrance doors. Previously, this was not entirely clear.

DHF welcomes this clarification, which should serve to improve standards of maintenance. The industry is rising to the challenge, with one outcome being an upsurge in demand for fire door inspection training. DHF has seen this increase in demand first hand.

It works collaboratively with the BRE Academy to provide a series of training courses, one of which is fire door inspection. So far this year, there have been thirty-seven courses delivered and a raft of online courses taken.

The importance of fire door maintenance has been confirmed by recent evidence to the Grenfell Inquiry, in which it was revealed that inspection of the flat entrance doors in Grenfell Tower generally took place only when a resident moved out or during major work programmes.

Following the fire, it was discovered that approximately two thirds of the door closers were broken or missing. This led to some fire doors remaining open and, undoubtedly, played a part in the tragic loss of life.

Shocking disclosures from building materials manufacturers at the Inquiry have preceded the recent creation by the government of an independent review of the construction products testing regime.  Evidence at the Inquiry has suggested that the existing system made it too easy to cheat and, again, DHF welcomes a more rigorous and thorough approach.

DHF’s General Manager, Michael Skelding says:
“We look forward to cooperating with the review and continuing to promote third-party certification of fire doors as part of the solution to this problem,”
The review is headed by Paul Morrell OBE and Anneliese Day QC.

Product information is the focus of another initiative supported by DHF: the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI), which is due to be launched later this year.  This has been created by the Construction Products Association (CPA) to help ensure that information about construction products is always clear, accurate, up-to-date, accessible and unambiguous.  The code, while voluntary, is supported by major contractors, which will help to ensure its success.

Michael concludes:
“DHF is delighted to be able to play a part in these various initiatives, whether led by government or industry, which are helping to improve the construction industry’s competence, it should also lead to the availability on the market of correctly tested products, accompanied, of course, by accurate performance data.”

Lignum, by The Joinery Network, is Secured by Design

Lignum, by The Joinery Network, is the UK’s first timber window and door system with the Secured by Design Police Preferred Specification, available exclusively to glazing manufacturers and installers.

The full UKAS test registered and third party checked Lignum system includes flush casement, box sash and spring balance vertical sliding windows, along with French, single, entrance and bifold doors. Secured by Design rigorously tests security, robustness and long-lasting use to ensure safe living environments can be achieved.

Owen Dare, Founder Director of The Joinery Network, says:
“Timber windows are a timeless choice and have always been liked by homeowners for the beautiful style they offer. However, there has never been a centralised system, which has prevented timber being added to product ranges in the same way PVCu and aluminum windows have been. That’s why we have invested in the design and development of Lignum.
“Lignum timber windows and door offer a real alternative to discerning homeowners who want home improvement products that offers unique design flexibility, sustainability and has proven performance values. Thanks to our work with Secured by Design, the glazing industry can offer homeowners a timber system that meets those demands and offers a genuine alternative to PVCu and aluminium.
“Lignum also overcomes supply chain issues which have hit the PVCu market, as all Lignum windows and doorS are manufactured in the UK.”

Doug Skins, Development Officer at Secured by Design, said:
"I am delighted that The Joinery Network have joined Secured by Design, with their Lignum system of timber windows and doors having achieved Secured by Design’s Police Preferred Specification. This is great news for small and medium joineries who wish to produce Secured by Design windows and doors and I look forward to working with The Joinery Network over the coming years.”

The Secured by Design Lignum system has also been tested to PAS 24:2016, Document Q, BS 6375: 1, Document L1B, and Document M certification, creating the most superior range of timber windows and doors.

To find out more about adding Lignum timber windows and doors to your range, email hello@thejoinerynetwork.co.uk

Digitally Printed Doors are Becoming the Trend

Last July, the sole UK distributor of Alutech sectional garage doors, JD UK, launched the Prestige door series in the UK market. The door quickly found its place in the market but it was the digital printing design feature that really captured the imagination of homeowners and installers alike.

Now, Alutech has made these endless visual options even more accessible by offering the digital print option on the ever-popular Trend series of sectional garage doors.

This specialised industrial digital printing technology allows the application of complex images onto the door leaf, making it possible to bring the homeowner’s most imaginative and personalised design ideas to life, as well as offering a wide selection of natural wood and stone effects.

Of the four digital print options available, the natural wood prints are set to be a sure-fire hit, offering a unique finish for those who appreciate the beauty and authenticity of nature. Similarly, the natural stone prints mimic the patterns found in real stone and marble in all their glory. And of course, you can also have an image of your choice printed on your door panel set or choose from the many theme prints Alutech offer from categories such as nature, landscapes and vehicle themes.

Jason Wade, JD UK National Sales Manager, commented:
“We’re delighted to be able to offer this exciting and innovative design option on what is our most popular door, the Trend. We’re increasingly seeing that homeowners no longer want to imitate the style of their neighbours, but rather differentiate their property with something that’s truly unique to them. The digital printing technology allows them to achieve exactly that, where the only limit is their imagination.”

  • Roller brackets with ball race bearings. All brackets are adjustable for maximum seal efficiency and easy installation with automation.

Luxury Car Specialist Clive Sutton launches UK’s most powerful Mustang

High-performance and luxury car specialist Clive Sutton has launched its CS850GT Mustang – a comprehensive reworking of Ford’s latest 5.0-litre V8 muscle car.

Sutton created the new car in response to customer feedback who were frustrated that Ford did not manufacture a right-hand drive Shelby GT500 for the UK market.

In the Sutton CS850GT, output has been boosted to 847hp (859PS) – making it the UK’s most powerful new Mustang – almost double the 454hp (460PS) of the stock Ford Mustang.

The new CS850GT boasts a custom-tuned Whipple Supercharger, intercooler and a Quad Active XFORCE exhaust that together deliver 665lb-ft (902Nm) of torque, alongside the significant power boost.

With absolute driver engagement in mind, the new levels of performance are accessed by a short-shifting six-speed manual transmission.

To handle the power and deliver a rewarding driving experience, the new muscle car’s suspension and chassis have been significantly upgraded with UK and European roads in mind.

Upgraded front and rear anti-roll bars, enhanced bracing and new subframe components combine with custom Vossen 20-inch wheels, uprated DBA brakes and Hawk pads to deliver new levels of dynamics to the Mustang.

Visually the new Sutton offering also raises the game. A completely reworked front end brings UK buyers a GT500-style appearance complemented by a new bumper lip, carbon fibre side rockers, and a carbon fibre rear valance that houses the quad exhausts.

New colour-adjustable tri-bar headlights, plus LED side and rear lights complete the new look while enhancing visibility.

Clive Sutton, said:
“Our customers demand the highest level of performance, handing and quality and I’m confident that the new CS850GT will exceed their expectations in every area. Our bespoke Mustang creation tops even the most powerful stock offering in the US, including the Shelby GT500, guaranteeing owners exclusivity and unparalleled Mustang enjoyment.”

Inside, the attention to detail continues with a Sutton red billet starter button housed within a new carbon fibre dash, which sits behind the square-bottom Sutton performance steering wheel. Owners can customise the interior fittings and colours with options that tastefully combine Alcantara and leather, accented by contrast stitching.

The new CS850GT is priced from £115,000 on-the road with a number of additional options available to personalise the car further and enhance its performance. For example, track-focused owners may opt for the Sutton carbon track spoiler while those owners seeking the most distinctive style may opt to customise the interior colours to further individualise the car.

Clive Sutton has been one of the largest importers of Ford Mustangs and Shelby Mustangs for more than 15 years. Since 2016, Sutton Bespoke has operated a specialist Mustang division with CS700 and CS800 versions of the iconic muscle car preceding today’s CS850GT.

Customers can build their dream Mustang using Clive Sutton’s own configurator at suttonmustang.com.

New Acoustic, Smoke & Fire Seal Brochure from Lorient

Lorient - a leading manufacturer of high-performance sealing systems is proud to unveil the latest edition of its popular: Acoustic, Smoke & Fire seals for Door Assemblies brochure.

Founded in 1979, Lorient was responsible for introducing intumescent technology for fire doors to the UK & this new brochure showcases its extensive product portfolio of intumescent seals.

Gaps around the four sides of a fire door leaf are essential – it’s the only way the door can open and close. But these gaps create a point of weakness, where fire can take hold and destroy the door, and lethal smoke can pass through.

Intumescent fire & smoke seals are designed to expand when exposed to heat and fill the gaps between the door leaf and frame; preventing the passage of smoke and fire to other parts or compartments of the building. This allows more time for people to escape – reducing the number of deaths and property damage.

The new Acoustic, Smoke & Fire Seals for Door Assemblies brochure features a wide range of intumescent seals and details their technical performance in a structured, clear format.

Many of Lorient’s door seals are multi-functional and can provide the highest standard of protection against sound (Approved Document E); smoke at all temperatures and fire (Approved Document B); while offering low frictional resistance for ease of door operation (Approved Document M).

Finishing touches can make all the difference, at Lorient you have a choice of standard colours and a range of beautiful woodgrain finishes to complement any project.

Highlights from the new digital brochure include interactive buttons that link directly to acoustic test reports, product certification, NBS Source; new FD30 and FD60 product applications; a product selector to help choose the right seals; FAQs and much more.

Yale products chosen by market leader for timber doorsets

Falcon Panel Products Ltd – the UK market leader for certified timber doorset components and timber panels – has opted to take the full range of Yale hardware on its new Stredor external doorset system.

The Stredor doorset range – designed and developed for external and internal use in fire, smoke, security and acoustic applications – will incorporate Yale’s Lockmaster AutoEngage multi-point lock, Platinum 3 Star Cylinder, Postmaster Professional FD letterplate, and Quartus anti-microbial combi door handle.

Neil Harrison, Door Technical Manager at Falcon Panel Products, comments:
“As with all our doorset systems, our dedicated in-house technical team carried out extensive fire and security testing in collaboration with Yale during the development of Stredor, to ensure it performs to the highest specifications. It was therefore vital that the door hardware we chose matched these standards and our high expectations.

“The products from Yale absolutely met our requirements regarding fire safety, security, and overall performance. As a result, we are thrilled that together we’re bringing this Stredor system to market which achieves solutions for both national and European standards.”
The Yale Lockmaster AutoEngage multi-point lock is designed to achieve PAS 24:2016, FD30 and FD60 when tested as part of a door assembly and has been tested to exceed 100,000 cycles - that’s the equivalent of 34 years operation*.

While the company’s Platinum 3 Star Euro cylinder has been approved to TS007:2014 and SS312 Diamond Standard and is endorsed by the Police preferred Secured by Design scheme.

Further ensuring optimal security, the Yale Postmaster Professional FD letterplate features an inner flap with a positive stop feature to guard against common attack methods and ‘fishing’ compliant to TS008.

Finally, the Quartus combi door handle provides ultimate corrosion resistance with an anti-microbial coating that reduces up to 99.99% of microbes on its surface. This is the most effective way to reduce transmission of microbes from the handle surface.

David Pridmore, Key Account Manager for Yale Door and Windows Solutions comments:
“We’re delighted that Falcon Panel Products Ltd have chosen our door hardware for the Stredor doorset systems.
“A great benefit is that (provided they are up-to-date with their enhanced security audit testing) certified customers of the Stredor will be able to buy our products in the scope without needing to do any additional testing.”

 David adds:

“We are looking forward to building on this success and developing our partnership with the team at Falcon Panel Products further in the future.”

iContact is Simply Diverse

A brochure to explain the diversity of a product with massive capabilities has been published by Strand Technologies.

iContact uses GSM/GPRS to enable real-time reporting across a range of security critical applications and access control systems for global remote monitoring, alerting, diagnostics and remote control.

It can be fitted to a range of electro-mechanical equipment – making it a versatile option. It works by collecting data which ‘talks’ to its parent – a specially developed software package produced with Python programming. This is accessed via a user gateway that allows the client to remotely manage the assets.

The brochure highlights how the system works, where it can be used and provides technical details for specifiers and technologists. It can be downloaded via https://www.strandtech.co.uk/icontact

iContact has a proven track record of being used in many types of environs including commercial, retail, manufacturing and warehousing premises – providing facilities managers with the tools for rapid diagnostics, performance reporting and essential remote locking/unlocking.

It is ideal for schools, universities, hospitals, care homes and other buildings accessed by the public to deliver safeguarding requirements, improved accessibility and alert systems linked to entrances, gates and barriers.

iContact can be used for access control in facilities which operate entry tags, PIN numbers and card management – providing access history and alerts for unauthorised access attempts and to manage systems within specialised markets.

Simon Bowden, Sales and Business Development Director for Strand Technologies said that iContact was a small product with big capabilities.
“If you are managing buildings remotely or oversee a large estate with multiple assets, iContact can help you do so remotely with improved connectivity,” he said.
“It provides a cost-effective solution that is compatible with wider building management control but can also be used as a stand-alone system – making it ideal for both new and retrofit developments.
“In minimising site attendance and emergency visits from service engineers, it can help reduce your carbon footprint and reduce energy costs by ensuring that your assets are working to their optimum,” added Simon.

iContact has been fitted to a diverse range of equipment including fire and smoke protection, temperature monitoring equipment, road safety signs and lights, threat protection and alert systems and specialist aquatics operations.

Smart Self-Disinfecting Door Handle launches in time for Post-COVID reopening

Swiss tech company Tweaq’s smart self-disinfecting door handle, which can potentially eradicate millions of pathogens per building, will be available from July 2021.

Tweaq announced its self-cleaning aluminium door handle, Rise, in November 2020 and customers have been keenly registering their interest.

The product is now available to purchase from July, whereas many of its competitors are still in development, making it the world’s first smart disinfecting door handle on the market.

How it works:
  • The user engages with the door handle as they normally would.
  • Once the door handle is released, the Tweaq Rise is activated and the peristaltic pump brings the disinfectant liquid from the casing to the sponge inside the ring around the door handle.
  • An internal system drives the outer aluminium ring backwards and forwards once along the surface, eliminating 99.9% of bacteria and viruses in under three seconds.

Tweaq Rise is powered by an electric engine and lithium batteries which allow more than 1,000 uses per cartridge.

Installation and maintenance:

Tweaq Rise installation is under ten minutes and can be used with standard doors with no modifications required.

The cartridge replacement is also quick and simple for staff or households to replace themselves after 1,000 uses.

When the disinfectant liquid runs out, the user will be notified with the use of IOT and blue LED on the casing. When this occurs, the user replaces it with a new cartridge and sends the empty cartridge back to Tweaq. Tweaq then refills the cartridge and recharges the batteries before being redistributed.

Tweaq Rise has been contemporarily designed so it seamlessly blends into modern corporate and hospitality buildings. It is available in dark grey, and Black.

The cartridge replacement process has been developed to be as user-friendly and eco-friendly as possible, requiring the least amount of interactions and waste; it has a plug and play feature allowing the user to swap the cartridge in less than 30 seconds – similar to plugging in a cable to a socket.

Tweaq Rise is priced at £320.00 (365 EUR) for two handles (one full door) and £40 for a domestic consumer. Consumers who return the cartridge to be refilled will only be charged £20.

For larger orders, special pricing is available on request.

About Tweaq

Tweaq is a Swiss technology company based in London. Founded by Giovanni Barilla, Baptiste Danichert and Vincent Gauye, its debut product is the smart self-disinfecting door handle, Rise, which launched November 2020.

Tweaq’s aim is to create products that genuinely impact the world, revolutionising traditional products into innovative, much-needed solutions.

Designing Safer Streets for Wellingborough and Kettering Residents

92 alley gates from Jacksons Fencing’s Barbican® range specified to better protect Wellingborough and Kettering residents.

Launched in 2020, the Government’s Safer Streets scheme formed part of its concerted aim to directly tackle crime, providing funds to help reduce burglary and theft in crime hotspots across the UK.

Only this month it was announced that a further £18.4 million has been awarded to forty areas across the country, in a bid to tighten street security. The money will be used to implement measures proven to cut crime, including home security, alley gates, street lighting, CCTV and distributing crime prevention advice.

60% of the crimes committed in the UK are classed as ‘acquisitive crimes’ (robbery, theft, and burglary) and the government has identified that these commonly occur in areas where criminals find it easy to offend. This is often due to poor window and door security, or easy access through alleyways.

The brief

After a successful bid by the Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (PFCC), an action plan was formulated to help better protect residents living in the Victoria ward of Wellingborough, and Kettering. The plan was aided by a resident consultation in the areas and included a wide variety of security measures.

Proposed solutions included enhanced local CCTV coverage, free home security improvements for selected properties such as better door and window locks, lighting, alarms, and CCTV, alley gates, neighbourhood alert messages, and crime prevention literature for all residents.

Solution

One essential task was to secure the large number of alleyways which criss-cross the neighbourhoods, providing a wealth of opportunity for criminal activity. A simple and effective solution to tackling crime is installing alley gates. These block access to concealed areas where crimes can be committed, and prevent unauthorised access to homes.

Jacksons Fencing was called upon to supply and install 74 of their Barbican® alley gates for the ward to achieve this objective, making it one of their most expansive projects to date. In addition, another 18 gates were installed in Kettering as part of the scheme.

During the installation process, it became clear that alleyways also provide prime spots for fly-tipping, with a massive 20 tonnes of rubbish removed from site throughout the installation process.

The pink dots on the map show the locations of the alley gates in Wellingborough, of which 25 are public and maintained by the council, and 49 private, with keys provided for residents.

Safe and very secure

Barbican gates are extremely robust, as they incorporate a welded pale-through-rail construction, with no visible bolts or fixings that could be removed. Jacksons developed this range of fencing and gates to provide a safer alternative to steel palisade. Steel palisade is not fit for purpose in this setting due to its inherent flaws and weaknesses whereby bolts can easily be removed, enabling pales to be swung aside to allow repeated access without an obvious trace of a break-in.

The gates are hot-dip galvanised for long-lasting protection against rust and corrosion and were powder-coated black to provide a smart appearance and durable finish. The alley gates were manufactured with key locks, a timeless and simple locking method.

Keeping connected

Throughout the whole process, a Facebook group has kept residents of the borough informed of the progress. Admin shared updates on the installation of CCTV and the alley gates, as well as factsheets, and informative infographics.

The Borough Council of Wellingborough was also awarded £50,000 to maintain 25 of the public alley gates for the lifespan of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) that covers Wellingborough town centre, and Victoria and Isebrook Wards. Therefore, the area is covered by legislation that prohibits anti-social behaviour for a minimum of three years.

Stephen Mold, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner commented on the scheme:
“My vision is to do everything I can to make this county a safer place and this financial support will have an enormous impact on improving security in the areas selected, which have higher levels of acquisitive crime than average for the county.”
Peter Jackson, MD, Jacksons Fencing says:
“It was a real privilege to play such a large part in this hugely important project. As a family business, we pride ourselves on creating quality products that will bring people together and make them feel safe and secure.

“In previous projects where alley gates have been installed, up to a 43% reduction in crime in the area has been recorded. I am hopeful that these Barbican gates will have the same effect in the Wellingborough and Kettering areas.”

Alpha Deuren ISO40 Sectional Doors provide solution for an Army Workshop Facility

Alpha Deuren, the Dutch Industrial Doors manufacturer, recently teamed up with Leeds-based Fox Industrial Doors to provide a specialised solution for this facility.

Fox Industrial Doors were contacted in late 2020 by a reputable main contractor based in the West Midlands to discuss the Industrial Door requirements on a very unique Design and Build Project of a New Workshop Facility for an Army Reserve Centre in the UK.

Following various discussions and alterations to the design of these doors between both the architect and main contractor, Fox Industrial Doors came up with a solution that would not only provide an aesthetically pleasing finish but would also offer efficiency and practicability.

The client required 2 additional access points to the front elevation of the building for personnel and pedestrian usage but unfortunately struggled with a previous supplier to come up with a suitable solution. Together Leeds Based Fox Industrial Doors and the Dutch Manufacturer Alpha Deuren came up with the fully insulated side pass door as the best option to conform with the requirements of the build.

With energy-saving and cost efficiency becoming ever more prominent in recent years, the ISO40 Sectional Doors manufactured by Alpha Deuren were the perfect solution to our customers’ requirements offering a U-value rating of 1.45 W/m2K.

Fox Industrial Doors

Fox Industrial Doors are a family-run firm with over 20 years of experience in the door and roller shutter industry. They are proud of their expertise and flexibility and focus on the personal one-to-one service all of their customers receive.
