Powerful electronic door lock. Built from the highest grade materials and carefully manufactured body and escutcheon made of steel.

Michelle Kradolfer, SBD’s IoT Technical Officer, said:
“There has been an exponential rise in IoT and smart devices being used within the average UK household, but most are not produced without giving security much thought and leaving consumers vulnerable to cyber attacks. Therefore, companies with IoT products need to ensure they are developed as secure as possible and tested against the appropriate standards and certifications.
“I am delighted that SALTO have become one of the first companies to achieve the Secure Connected Device accreditation and clearly demonstrating that their Neo Electronic Cylinder Range and XS4 One Lock have achieved the appropriate IoT standards and certifications, building confidence and trust in their product. We hope other companies will take note of this achievement and follow in SALTO’s footsteps in developing IoT products safely for the UK market”.
SALTO Systems Ltd MD Ramesh Gurdev says:
“Achieving this new Secure Connected Device accreditation with Secured by Design demonstrates to current and potential customers that SALTO connected products continue to meet the highest security standards.”
SALTO Systems are world leaders in wire free and wireless, cloud and mobile access control solutions, providing total control over who is able to access what, where and when at all times.

From its inception in 2001, SALTO was created with the objective of devising a world-class access control system that was simple to use and extremely efficient, giving users the ability to control all their access needs and secure all their doors without complex and expensive wiring.

From airports and healthcare to government education and hotels, SALTO continue to deliver some of the most advanced and flexible electronic locking solutions on the market.

ASSA ABLOY Door Group launches new LPS 2081 Certified Powershield Rathlin Door

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions Door Group has launched the new Powershield Rathlin door, which is LPS 2081 certified and prevents unauthorised access by various physical security products when targeted by intruders using stealth.

The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) is a globally recognised third-party certification body that sets the standards needed to ensure that fire and security products and services perform effectively.

The new standard LPS 2081, created by the LPBC with the BRE and Secured by Design, specifies two grades of security relating to the tools used and the time taken by attackers where they want to avoid making any significant noise. This standard is separate to LPS 1175, which also relates to vandalism and security, but has different requirements to the noise element.

With LPS 2081, the security performance is split into two categories – A or B - based on the tools used and the duration of the attack. The new Powershield Rathlin is LPS 2081 Security B rated, which is the more advanced rating, prolonging the attack for up to 3 minutes, and with an enhanced set of tools.

The new Powershield Rathlin comprises of morticed mechanical escape lock with automatic deadlocking, panic pad, key with AASD Guard, louvre vents, pull handle, surface mounted pull handle, vison panels, and active leaf.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland Door Group, explained:
“The market leading Powershield steel door range combines high performance with high quality, offering a fully compliant, fully finished door set with factory-fitted hardware. Doors and frames are designed to ensure ease of installation on-site and provide the end user with a premium door solution.
“Our new Powershield Rathlin’s LPS 2081 certification demonstrates the door’s ability to withstand a stealth attack, where the intruder avoids making significant noise that would usually draw attention.
“This new addition adds to our existing comprehensive portfolio of high-performance products that meet the standards and legislation for safety and security.”

Hörmann UK - on the road for charity

A group of eighteen intrepid cyclists from Hörmann UK have recently taken part in the GLP ‘G Tour’ annual charity bike ride.

The Hörmann team included riders from both Transdek and Fen-Bay, and consisted of both experienced and inexperienced cyclists, many of which had spent many hours training for the challenge they faced.

Featuring three distances of 25, 50 and 75 miles the event was organised by GLP in support of Dementia UK, Mind and Parkinson’s UK, with the Hörmann team raising a total of £3000.00.

Leading from the front, Hörmann UK Managing Director, Wolfgang Gorner said:
“We were extremely happy to get on our bikes and support GLP in raising money for three very worthwhile charities.
It was great that colleagues from both Transdek and Fen-Bay joined us, and it was fantastic to see some of our team, who had not had much experience on a bike, get stuck into their pre-ride training schedules and finish their chosen distance on the day itself.
Overall, it was a great occasion, enjoyed by all and even though there were some very sore legs at the end I know we will be back for the tour next year.”

The Rise of the Gigafactory: Protecting the Buildings of Tomorrow

First coined by Elon Musk to describe his first electric car battery production plant, the term ‘gigafactory’ has become generic for any largescale facility that produces lithium batteries for cars on a massive scale.

These buildings are cropping up across the globe and gigafactory has even been used to describe any expansive, high-volume manufacturing plant. But as the scale, innovation and modernity of these buildings evolve, so should fire safety. What measures can these businesses undertake as part of their drive to be resilient and protected?

Gigafactories are truly enormous and while Tesla’s gigafactory is one of the largest buildings on earth by footprint at a staggering four million square feet, one thing is clear: fire safety needs to be front and centre of the design and must evolve with these buildings of tomorrow. In the UK we have seen plans for at least three of these facilities.

The latest, Britishvolt, is set to build a Gigaplant in Northumberland capable of manufacturing enough batteries for 300,000 electric vehicles each year and equivalent in size to 50 football pitches.

Recent reports of design changes to the £300 million building and a halt to construction suggest that the creation of a complex building on this scale is not without its challenges. The car battery manufacturer hopes to start its assembly lines in mid-2025, a delay of more than a year.

It is often the case, that when new industrial and commercial buildings are built it can be without the knowledge of what they were going to be used for, they are built speculatively. Gigafactories pose a differing challenge as the emerging technology that they are set to produce is constantly evolving. The processes they need to house will also be evolving and need to be accommodated.

The building designers are therefore given the challenging task of creating a structure that can accommodate such innovation and the fire loads within. In any large-scale, complex building such as this, it is paramount that fire safety is not taken lightly to ensure the safety and protection of the occupiers and the resilience of the business.

Decision makers often consider the risk of fire is catered for by following building regulations when envisioning their new building, even though the guidance to those regulations is limited. In fact, an industrial building the size of 50 football pitches is outside the scope of that guidance as it is a unique and complex building.

We may see similarities in the labels we are giving to parts of these largescale buildings with terms like a warehouse, industrial process or a factory but they are not a “common building”.

This means taking a different approach to defining and engineering the fire safety and protection of such large facilities. It may be a surprise to many but a key fire protection component in current gigafactories and existing ones are automatic fire sprinklers.

The array of processes under one roof, scale and complex hazards means a flexible protection system is needed to protect the general facility and those working within it. Automatic fire sprinklers are ideal for this purpose, with specific protection elements for individual processes.

Some may question whether it is appropriate to use sprinklers. In August 2018, a Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada suffered limited damage when a fire broke out in the production area late in the evening. The installed sprinklers suppressed the fire which was finally extinguished by the fire service. The facility returned to production the next morning,1 demonstrating the effectiveness of sprinkler systems as the perfect tool for physical resilience and business continuity.

As the UK plans its own gigafactories, mega-warehouses and similar industrial buildings are also likely to proliferate in the coming years. We must think of the performance of these buildings over time and consider the impact of fire and its consequences.

Now is the time to think of how, and why, we should protect these valuable assets which may not be glamorous, but nonetheless are vital as part of the UK’s business infrastructure. We can build even bigger buildings but ultimately when there is a fire and no protection, the fire service cannot deal with it. Protecting the value of such properties and those who work within them should always be top of the agenda.

Learn from the best with Somfy’s UK ‘Training Academy’

Somfy’s smart and motorised solutions offer next-level convenience, easy installation and quality. With over 50 years’ experience, Somfy produces and sells motors, controls, and sensors worldwide and is a specialist when it comes to motorising and controlling all types of garage doors.

Somfy develops technology that can be adapted to your customer’s needs and budget; helping you to provide them with the best solutions to guarantee maximum comfort.

Why do customers choose electric garage doors?

There are several reasons why people choose an electric garage door over a manual one. The unpredictability of British weather, and the added convenience of controlling access from your car or your phone, to name only a few.

While some choose to replace the entire, others opt to add motorised garage door openers to their existing setup, be it a roll-up, sliding or tilt-up door. These added devices don’t change the way the garage door works but simply enhance it. This gives customers the added benefit of automatically closing the door at night or opening it when they arrive home, without the expense of a brand-new door.

The benefits do not stop there either. Some electric garage door openers allow you to hook up to voice assistant features. As well as this, they can also integrate with smart home systems to manage everything at once with just a touch.

Get the best service from Somfy

The flexible automated solutions available through Somfy enable buyers to customise their choices based on their preferences and budget. Somfy and its network of suppliers guide customers through each step of their project to provide them with the best solutions and guarantee maximum comfort.

The Ferrari Testa Rossa J is now on sale in Selfridges, redefining luxury shopping

The Little Car Company is excited to announce that the Ferrari Testa Rossa J is on permanent display at Selfridges’ flagship department store, in London. In partnership with the luxury Oxford Street store, The Little Car Company’s limited-edition vehicle is on show for all shoppers to see up close.

Presented on its own unique display installation in the Technology department on the lower ground floor, the Testa Rossa J is exhibited in a beautiful historic paint scheme incorporating an Argento Nurburgring (Silver) body, with a Rosso Mugello (Red) livery, which takes up to 160 hours to complete by hand.

Inside, the car is exquisitely trimmed in Bordeaux leather, from the same tanneries that supply Ferrari for their current road cars, featuring black piping and tone-on-tone stitching.

Strictly limited to 299 vehicles, Ferrari has led every aspect of the project, in collaboration with The Little Car Company, a UK-based firm specialising in the production of electric scaled cars.

Developed and handcrafted from the original drawings held by Ferrari Classiche, with design oversight from Ferrari's Centro Stile, the intricate chassis of the 250 Testa Rossa was scanned and digitally recreated before being scaled down 25%.

Visitors to Selfridges can view the 75% scale vehicle up close and use the material sample pod to view a selection of the many vehicles’ leather and paint samples. Ferrari’s Classiche department carried out extensive research into all the liveries that have adorned the 250 Testa Rossa throughout its racing career, allowing prospective clients to choose from 14 historical liveries, 53 bodywork colours and additional personalised racing liveries, all authentically in keeping with Ferrari style.

Shoppers can enquire with one of the store’s friendly sales team about reserving an exclusive build slot on the Ferrari Testa Rossa J, as well as any of The Little Car Company’s other products.

Ben Hedley, CEO of The Little Car Company, said:
“We are thrilled and extremely proud to launch our very own display at Selfridges’ iconic flagship store, on Oxford Street.
“To have the car on display for all visitors to see, with the stamp of approval from one of the world’s most celebrated luxury department stores, is a huge privilege. This collaboration demonstrates the remarkable quality that the Ferrari Testa Rossa J exhibits, and the phenomenal level of detail that goes into every car we handcraft.”
On every element of the Testa Rossa J, Ferrari and The Little Car Company have ensured the product is as true to the original car as possible. The steering wheel is supplied by Nardi, makers of the original steering wheel, and the same steering and suspension geometry have been replicated, giving the electric car authentic handling.

The body is also made of hand-formed aluminium, which goes through the same process used on the 250 Testa Rossa.

As a nod to the current generation of road cars, the paint is the same as that applied to Ferrari’s current range of cars, as is the front badge. The pedals are from the F8 Tributo and the tyres are supplied by Pirelli, Ferrari’s official technical partner, fitted on the handmade 12-inch wire wheels.

Next to the repurposed instruments on the vehicle’s interior dashboard - which now show battery temperature and charge level dials - is a beautifully designed Manettino, inspired by that used in the Ferrari 812 Superfast, allowing the driver to change the driving mode of the car.

To cater for drivers of all ages and abilities, four driving modes have been carefully developed to make the driving experience as safe as possible:
  • NOVICE MODE: 1kW / 24 km/h
  • COMFORT MODE: 4kW / 40 km/h
  • SPORT MODE: 10 kW / 80 km/h
  • RACE MODE: 12kW / 80 km/h
The three batteries powering the electric engine are positioned at the front of the car, and provide approximately 90 km range, depending on driving style.

For further information on the strictly limited-edition Ferrari Testa Rossa J, or to configure your very own, please visit: www.testarossaj.com

AliMet’s James has Industry Distinction

From theory to practice - AliMet Fabrications’ new Project Manager James Harris once swapped academic endeavour for ‘hands on’ experience. It led to a new career path which has taken him from shop floor to management.

James studied architecture at Birmingham University and was intending to move into town planning when he seized an opportunity to gain practical experience.
“The plan was to get some work experience and then go back into education to complete my degree but I found that I enjoyed the working environment, liked the people I met in the industry and the challenges that it presented. So, I decided to stay with it, learn from the ground up and see where it would take me,” he said.
He began work as a production operative with GEZE UK, before being promoted into project design and then service management.
“I was able to apply a lot of the skills I learnt at university such as CAD design, drawings and 3d work and acquire new ones too.” he added.
He has a City and Guilds qualification in electrical installation, is a certified powered pedestrian door technician and holds a CSCS surveyors’ card.

James, from Tamworth, worked for GEZE for eight years and briefly with Diack, as a project manager.

His move to AliMet Fabrications allows him to use all his experience and contacts within the industry to support company growth and new services that AliMet is looking to introduce.

Outside work, James, enjoys property development and is currently renovating a 17th Century half-timbered property.
“It's been quite a challenge to bring back to its original state - a great little project but I’m looking forward to moving on, relocating nearer to the company’s head office, in Bridgnorth and perhaps taking on a new property redevelopment.”
James is also a lover of the great outdoors, a keen cyclist and is soon to take up sailing.

AliMet Managing Director, Steve Marshall, said:
“We are very happy to welcome James to the team. He brings a lot of valuable experience and will offer AliMet customers great end-to-end service and support to meet all their requirements.”

Husky 120 Pro is a professional-level sliding system which caters for wooden and metal doors up to 120kg. The smooth-running system which has low initial friction benefits from a range of complementary accessories including a newly designed soft close mechanism. It sits alongside the current Husky products in our range including Husky Sliding and Husky Low Headroom.

Trevor Cossins, Managing Director, P C Henderson explains the reasons for introducing the new product:

As well as the UK market, P C Henderson enjoys sales globally with customers in over 70 countries. The company has a strong research and development ethos, continually delivering the most innovative and creative products to builders’ merchants, architects, contractors, and home improvement companies.

Trevor Cossins commented,
“Covid19 impacted businesses across the world and with our flexibility and responsive business practices we have been able to adapt and thrive. We see the launch of Husky 120 Pro as a continuation of our agile and proactive approach to operations.”
Based in Co. Durham, P C Henderson has one of the most technically advanced manufacturing systems of its kind, consistently achieving ISO 9001 quality certification. Explaining why the time was right to launch this product, Sales and Commercial Director David Newton said,
“Our market research and feedback from customers confirmed the time was right to launch this new product. Husky is seen as the benchmark for sliding door hardware systems. We want to bring to market the very best kits and products with improved functionality at competitive prices.”
“We are particularly proud of the new soft close accessory that can accommodate panels between 10kgs and 120kgs in weight, therefore reducing inventory for our customers. The new soft close product is extremely robust and we believe it will be extremely well received by the market.”

Norseal Hardware Kits Save Time and Hassle on Site

Hundreds of FD30 fire doors at a historic hotel in London’s Piccadilly have been fitted with a variety of Norseal intumescent and fire-rated products.

Many of the products were made bespoke by Norseal, to make the job quicker, easier and trouble-free for specialist joinery and interior fit-out contractor NBJ (London) Limited.

London’s iconic Piccadilly Hotel, later Le Méridien Piccadilly recently re-named as The Dilly is currently undergoing an impressive restoration and transformation programme. The hotel, at 21 Piccadilly, Mayfair, dates back to 1908 and this latest transformation sees The Dilly redefined and restored to distinctive London style.

The hotel incorporates 283 rooms and suites, various restaurants and food outlets, a health club and spa, a dance studio, and seven meeting rooms. Designers for the project, Aspinall Creative, have taken inspiration from the heritage of the city of London with strong design connections to an age of elegance and the hotel’s cosmopolitan heritage.

Joinery contractors NBJ, working on phase one of the restoration project, installed over two hundred FD30 fire doors on bedroom doors at the Dilly Hotel using a variety of products from Norseal to maintain fire integrity throughout. As well as a variety of intumescent strip seals, NBJ fitted Norseal’s NOR810 single actuated bottom edge drop seal for its acoustic and smoke rating.

A significant benefit for NBJ installation was Norseal’s intumescent lock kits, cut to bespoke size for the hotel room door locks, saving NBJ time, money and hassle on site.

Craig Smith from NBJ says:
“We always get great service from Norseal and these Interdens lock kits certainly saved us a great deal of time on such a large project, and we were always confident that they would be perfect every time.”
“Having the pre-cut intumescent kits, along with intumescent strip – in white to match the doors – drop seals and fire rated door viewers all from one place delivered without fail on time was a great help to us in getting these doors completed to the highest standards on time to meet the project’s tight deadlines.”
Norseal supplies a variety of low-pressure graphite and Interdens intumescent sealing solutions for a variety of ironmongery products including hinges, flush bolts, door closers, and locks, all designed to help prevent the transfer of heat through door hardware during a fire.

In accordance with BS 476-22, they provide up to 120-minute fire resistance and can be designed and bespoke in-house so they are right first time, every time and did not need to be cut or adjusted on site.

The NOR810 is a single actuated bottom edge drop seal for acoustic and fire-rated timber doorsets. It has been tested to one million cycles to all appropriate standards and is available in thirteen lengths as standard from 320-1535mm. In addition, Norseal can cut accurately to any length using Europe’s first custom-made drop seal cutting machine.

The machine will cut any drop seal to the exact size needed, ready for next day delivery, without damaging it, keeping the fire, smoke and acoustic integrity of the door intact. Every door seal cut to size by Norseal comes with a one million cycle guarantee.

For more information please visit www.norseal.co.uk or contact Norseal on 01661 830088.
