Winners of the British Woodworking Federation Awards 2024 revealed

The brightest stars of the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry were honoured as the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Awards 2024 winners were unveiled during a memorable evening at The Langham in London.

The 5-star hotel provided an elegant backdrop for the recognition of the people, projects, and innovations that have shaped the sector over the past year.

Marking its 16th anniversary, this year’s awards drew the highest number of entries yet and showcased an exceptional range of talent across all categories. Guests enjoyed fine dining and celebrated achievements highlighting the sector’s commitment to excellence and progress.

The prestigious event featured seven award categories. The winners included:

BWF Health and Safety Award – Sponsored by NFU Mutual

JELD WEN for their development of a Radio Frequency Tag System, using AI technology to protect     pedestrians from moving industrial vehicles.

BWF Award judges recognised that this initiative is a significant investment in modern and emerging     RFID and AI technologies to help manage safety, protecting both employees and visiting HGV         drivers on the premises. The judges commended them for “focusing on risk reduction and                     demonstrating a clear commitment to safety improvement, in what is currently one of the highest     severity risk areas at work.”

BWF Apprentice of the Year Award – Sponsored by CITB

Lilli-Mae Broadhurst, Gowercroft Joinery. Lilli-Mae’s employer nomination praised her achievements saying she “is a very fast learner and her hunger for knowledge, and ambition to get on was soon apparent. Her fast promotion at Gowercroft has been down to hard graft, determination, and willingness to take the initiative.”

Her nomination was commended by the judges for not only bringing a smile to their faces but reminding them of the hugely important role played by professional back-office staff in the successful business operations. Her can-do attitude, initiative and commercial awareness were recognised for adding value to Gowercroft Joinery.

BWF Heritage Project of the Year Award – Sponsored by Remmers (UK) Limited

Precision Made Joinery for their valuable contribution to the restoration of the Grade 2 Listed property, The Old Rectory, Fornham All Saints, Suffolk.

The judges highlighted that Precision Made Joinery delivered an exceptional project which clearly demonstrated quality workmanship to achieve a traditional result. The judges praised this as an “exceptional project showing a wide range of high-quality traditional woodworking and joinery skills”.

BWF Innovation Award – Sponsored by Anker Stuy Coatings

Heron Fire Doors for the ongoing development of their cost-efficient external door set ‘Herodor’.

The BWF Award judges commended the Herodor as a true innovation for the industry. It aims to do something entirely new and is a timely product offering demonstrably improved fire safety standards to consumers at a relatively low cost.

BWF Rising Star Award – Sponsored by Accsys Technologies Plc

Tautvydas Bumblys, Heron Joinery. Tautvydas’ employer nomination celebrates his achievements sharing that “At Heron Joinery, we are truly fortunate to have an individual who embodies the values of care, compassion and dedication not only to his colleagues but also to the broader community.”

Judges were impressed by Tautvydas’ outstanding efforts in the workplace and outside. They noted his fantastic organisation and leadership skills as contributing to “many projects to support the business in achieving its goals, clearly demonstrating his commitment to the organisation.”

BWF Sustainability Award – Sponsored by Mirka

Gowercroft Joinery for their commitment to continued improvement within its manufacturing processes, leading to tangible enhancements in sustainability practices and further reductions in the overall environmental impact using Life Cycle Assessments.

Judges were impressed by how Gowercroft Joinery have demonstrated a real commitment to genuine and comprehensive environmental improvements, sustainable goals and pioneering for the future.

BWF Woodworking Project of the Year Award – Sponsored by Impra Wood Protection Limited

D Foord Joinery Ltd for the elegant, yet technically challenging design and installation of elliptical staircase for a Georgian house using English oak.

This project impressed the judges as not only a fine example of exceptional craftsmanship, but the design and engineering process to come up with the final design are “truly fantastic” and a “perfect example of traditional woodworking skills”.

Commenting on this year’s winners and the Awards ceremony, Helen Hewitt, Chief Executive of the BWF, said:
“It is truly inspiring to see the exceptional quality and quantity of entries this year, especially those for our new Sustainability Award which received an outstanding response and attracted the highest number of entries in this year’s submissions. It’s been incredible to see all the impressive work and individuals who have made an impact on the industry.
“The BWF Awards are a rare opportunity for us to come together to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the past year and the skills, dedication and technical expertise that drive our industry forward. As the Awards continue to grow and the submissions become harder to judge, the hard work, skills and innovation displayed by our fantastic finalists truly celebrates the very best of our profession. Congratulations to all of our winners on their impressive achievements.”

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) is the trade association for the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry in the UK. It has over 500 members drawn from manufacturers, distributors and installers of timber doors, windows, conservatories, staircases, furniture, all forms of architectural joinery including shop fitting, timber frame buildings and engineered timber components, as well as suppliers to the industry. DHF announces its 2025 Members’ Conference

Tamworth-based trade association the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced that, following several years of absence, it will hold its Members’ Conference on Wednesday, February 5th, 2025, at RAF Cosford

This free event marks a significant milestone for the Federation. It will bring together members and industry professionals for a day of knowledge sharing, networking, and innovation.

The event, whose main sponsor is Gliderol Garage & Industrial Doors Ltd, will take place at the National Cold War Exhibition, which opened in February 2007 and is the only place in the UK where Britain’s V Bombers—the Vulcan, Victor, and Valiant—can be viewed.

The conference will comprise a series of seminars and educational workshops led by industry professionals and government representatives on topics such as legislation, industry trends, and best practices in the door, gate, and hardware industry. There will also be a small exhibition showcasing the works of DHF members, guided tours of the National Cold War Exhibition, and a talk by guest speaker Flt. Lt John Nichol.

Flt. Lt. John Nichol is a retired Royal Air Force navigator who was shot down and captured during the first Gulf War. The traumatic weeks of capture gave John a unique insight into the human capacity to deal with extreme adversity and change. Partly because of his outgoing personality, partly because of the experience itself, John can now present a fascinating insight into what happens when our innermost reserves are tested by external demands.
“We have already received a great deal of support from our members who are looking forward to these upcoming events where they can network and share information, said DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“In particular, we would like to thank our main sponsor, Gliderol Garage & Industrial Doors Ltd, along with lecture theatre and classroom sponsors, ASSA ABLOY, RCS Doors Ltd and membership benefit provider Citation.
“Members exhibiting include Allegion UK Ltd, Gerda Security Products Ltd, Hörmann UK Ltd, Jewers Doors Ltd, JMA UK, Chamberlain GmbH (Liftmaster division), Rutland UK, Strongdor Ltd and SWS UK Ltd. We look forward to welcoming our members for this very special gathering.”

If you are a DHF member and would like to attend, please contact marketing@dhfonline.org.uk

Grey Continues to Lead the Way

With end consumers being faced with an ever-increasing range of colours and finishes, they are really spoilt when it comes to choosing a garage door.

From neutral tones to bolder hues, there is every opportunity for homeowners to be creative and stand out from the crowd or to just subtly match the style of their home, and the ability to match their garage and entrance door has never been easier.

After having analysed the sales of their sectional doors over a 12-month period, Hörmann UK reports that some colours seem to remain firm favourites even with the expanding colour palette on offer.

Sales of Anthracite grey (RAL 7016) doors dominate, with the colour remaining a firm favourite - 30% of the doors are supplied in this classic colour.

In fact, it’s all about the greys, with a total of six different greys featuring in their top ten colours, including Agate grey, which is quickly establishing itself as a key colour in the market.

Black continues to retain its timeless appeal, with understated Terra brown and Fir green also featuring in the list of the top 10 desired colours.

And no one should forget fresh Traffic white (RAL 9016); it’s a winner representing 26% of all Hörmann sectional doors installed.

To find out more about Hörmann garage doors visit this page on the Hörmann website or call 01530 516868.

Aston Martin THOR Team confirms Riberas and Tincknell for 2025 Valkyrie world title assault

The Aston Martin THOR Team that will take the British ultra-luxury performance brand back into the fight to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright for the first time since 1959, has named the first two drivers in its line-up for the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC]; Alex Riberas (ESP) and Harry Tincknell (GBR).

Both drivers have extensive experience of racing Aston Martins during their glittering careers and have played key roles in the development and preparation of the stunning new Valkyrie hypercar challenger through this summer’s testing programme.

The breathtaking Aston Martin Valkyrie, set to make its world championship debut in the Qatar 1812km on 28 February 2025, will be the only race car built to the FIA’s Hypercar regulations to simultaneously contest both the WEC and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship [IMSA] in 2025.

Reviving the famous #007 and #009 Aston Martin race numbers for 2025, two of these 6.5-litre, naturally aspirated V12 powered Valkyries, featuring race-optimised carbon fibre chassis, will be entered in WEC’s top Hypercar class.

Valkyrie will make its IMSA debut in the GTP category at the world famous 12 Hours of Sebring (12-14 March).

Tincknell returns to the Aston Martin fold after four years. Indeed, the last time the Englishman raced for the brand was when he won the LMGTE Pro class of the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans, alongside Alex Lynn (GBR) and Maxime Martin (BEL), in an Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE.

The 2016 European Le Mans Series champion and 2020 12 Hours of Sebring overall winner will carry the honour of driving the #007 Valkyrie.

Tincknell said:

“It’s an absolute honour to return to Aston Martin for the Valkyrie programme,”

“I believe the car will be a firm fan favourite with its amazing looks and the incredible sound of the V12 engine.

“It’s been exciting to be a part of the initial development testing and the DNA of the car feels strong.

“I’m very proud of the hard work everyone has put in so far as we build towards the first race.

“Everyone at Aston Martin THOR Team has made me feel very welcome and I know I’m joining a professional outfit.”

Tincknell added:

“Aston Martin has an incredible history in sportscar racing and this is really a ‘pinch myself moment’.

“Of course, I have great memories of Le Mans in 2020 and the aim is to repeat that feat with Valkyrie. It’s a dream come true.”

Riberas, an established pillar of The Heart of Racing team, steps up from the GT category to form part of the line-up in the #009 Valkyrie.

The Spaniard has earned his place in the top class after a stellar season in The Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage, where he recorded victories in both WEC in LMGT3 and IMSA’s GTD Pro category.

Riberas said:

“It is a great honour to be chosen as a driver for such an exciting project,”

“I have been a part of The Heart of Racing for the past 10 years and to be able to continue my journey with them, now at the pinnacle of endurance racing, is simply a dream come true.

“On top of this, to be given the opportunity to represent such an iconic brand as Aston Martin, which has such a remarkable history both in sportscar racing and at Le Mans is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

“The Aston Martin Valkyrie is the most spectacular car I have ever driven and it sounds amazing, so to be able to share it with the fans of motorsport all over the world is something I am very much looking forward to.”

Aston Martin THOR Team principal Ian James, said:

“Both drivers have shown the relevant blend of patience, speed and dedication to the team through the testing phase of the Aston Martin Valkyrie programme and have earned the right to the race seat in 2025.

“We’re all very excited heading into next season, particularly given all the hard work that has gone into it so far.

“There is still a long road ahead, and I think I speak for all of us when I say we can’t wait to go racing with this incredible car.

“It’s a special honour to run a team with this iconic brand and to be able to take the Aston Martin wings back to where they belong, at the very pinnacle of endurance racing.”

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is nearing the end of its test and development programme and has covered more than 12,500km’s to date, including the recent Michelin test after the WEC Bahrain finale at the beginning of November and last weekend’s IMSA Sanction test at Daytona.

The focus for the Aston Martin THOR Team is now very much on honing the Valkyrie’s performance window ahead of homologation for the 2025 season.

Adam Carter, Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport said:

“We are reaching a critical juncture in the development of the Aston Martin Valkyrie and to this point the car has passed all of the objectives and benchmarks we have set for it.

“Testing is one thing however, going racing quite another and we do not underestimate the formidable line-up of world class competition in the WEC Hypercar class and in IMSA’s GTP category.

“Harry and Alex both fully deserve their place in the 2025 line-up and we’re excited to see how they progress next season.

“It’s also great to see the return of the famous #007 and #009 race numbers, which have been so synonymous with previous success at Le Mans for the brand.”

The #009 was the race number emblazoned on the Aston Martin DBR9 that scored back-to-back GT1 class victories for the brand in the 2007 and 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The full driver line-up for Aston Martin THOR Team’s 2025 WEC and IMSA campaigns will be revealed in due course.

Double recognition for AV4 at the National Fenestration Awards

Leading window and door specialist Winkhaus UK is delighted to have received two awards at this year’s National Fenestration Awards.

The awards for Door Component of the Year and Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year were awarded to the company’s newest innovation, the AV4 multi-point autoLocking solution.

Since the introduction of the first hooked autoLock almost 20 years ago, Winkhaus has developed its AV range in an innovation timeline of industry firsts.

The autoLock AV4 range consists of the AV4, AV4 Heritage,AV4 EntryGuard, AV4 M4 with blueMatic EAV4, and blueMatic EAV4+ motors controllable with the Winkhaus doorControl application.

The new AV4 product family is available in a range of backsets and faceplate sizes, including U-rail, which is suitable for all door constructions.

AV4 journey and development

Designed to combat the issues with thermal expansion, AV4 is the turning point for fabricators and installers tired of costly callouts to deal with sash-to-frame issues and to make a hinge and keep adjustments.

The AV4 autoLock reduces the force needed to operate by 40% compared to the market-leading AV2 and up to 70% compared to competitors' solutions. Combined with wider installation tolerances, AV4 continues to operate where other solutions fail.

George Smith, Senior Product and Technical Manager for Winkhaus UK, said:

“The design brief for AV4 came directly through customer insight that highlighted the impact of remedial calls due to thermal expansion that increases the force required to retract a locking mechanism.

“Many factors can affect expansion, including installation, alignment of keeps, door maintenance, temperature and building structure.

“As these factors fluctuate, so does the potential deviation of a door, impacting the end user's ability to open and secure their door.

“Through partnership and innovation, we designed the AV4 autoLock to overcome the well-known industry issue of thermal expansion and adapt to changing conditions, offering reliable security and ease of use for end users.”

Testing against real-world conditions

Winkhaus wanted to measure the real-world impact that AV4 can have on a door's ease of use, completing extensive testing, including benchmarking AV4’s performance against the market-leading AV2 and competitor's solutions, plus inviting end-users to test solutions against the simulated impact of thermal expansion compared to other locks on the market.

When it comes to thermal expansion, the industry-standard tolerance for doors is up to 5mm, with a tolerance of +or-2mm being commonplace.

To simulate deviation, packers were inserted in 2mm increments, with initial measurements being taken from zero deviation.

The doors used were from the same fabricator, the same batch of manufacture and all hardware, other than the locks and keeps, were the same.

The invited research group included individuals with arthritis, disabled family members, and elderly individuals, all of whom have struggled to operate locks, suffering from the impact of thermal expansion previously.

The results from all testing were conclusive, with AV4 continuing to operate with ease to double the industry door standard.

AV4 reception and impact

AV4 is a revolutionary product that is changing the accepted norm, showing people how easy it can be to operate a locking mechanism – even in the face of thermal expansion.

Mike Rushen, Sales Director for Winkhaus UK, said:

“Designed with extensive insights into problematic door operation and tested rigorously, the AV4 autoLock has been designed to significantly reduce callouts and remedial works.

“We have worked closely with leading door leaf providers and major manufacturers to ensure this lock sets a new standard in reliability.

“We are delighted with the early success of AV4 and proud to receive the recognition of the National Fenestration Awards, especially as this is through the nominations and votes of our customers and the impact AV4 is having in the market.”

Marketing support

At Winkhaus UK, everything we do is centred around guaranteeing the success of our customers, providing added-value products, services, and solutions to ensure they have maximum competitiveness.

The marketing team have worked closely with customers to provide a wide range of assets to promote AV4, which are all available to download from the Winkhaus Portal, so they are able to effectively market, install, and maintain Winkhaus products.

We are proud of the recognition of Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year by the National Fenestration Awards and all who placed a nomination for us in this category.

Integrating targeting digital content with customer and end-user testimonials, our campaign for AV4 allowed the product’s features and benefits to speak for themselves, amplifying its reception in the market.
