Double recognition for AV4 at the National Fenestration Awards

Leading window and door specialist Winkhaus UK is delighted to have received two awards at this year’s National Fenestration Awards.

The awards for Door Component of the Year and Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year were awarded to the company’s newest innovation, the AV4 multi-point autoLocking solution.

Since the introduction of the first hooked autoLock almost 20 years ago, Winkhaus has developed its AV range in an innovation timeline of industry firsts.

The autoLock AV4 range consists of the AV4, AV4 Heritage,AV4 EntryGuard, AV4 M4 with blueMatic EAV4, and blueMatic EAV4+ motors controllable with the Winkhaus doorControl application.

The new AV4 product family is available in a range of backsets and faceplate sizes, including U-rail, which is suitable for all door constructions.

AV4 journey and development

Designed to combat the issues with thermal expansion, AV4 is the turning point for fabricators and installers tired of costly callouts to deal with sash-to-frame issues and to make a hinge and keep adjustments.

The AV4 autoLock reduces the force needed to operate by 40% compared to the market-leading AV2 and up to 70% compared to competitors' solutions. Combined with wider installation tolerances, AV4 continues to operate where other solutions fail.

George Smith, Senior Product and Technical Manager for Winkhaus UK, said:

“The design brief for AV4 came directly through customer insight that highlighted the impact of remedial calls due to thermal expansion that increases the force required to retract a locking mechanism.

“Many factors can affect expansion, including installation, alignment of keeps, door maintenance, temperature and building structure.

“As these factors fluctuate, so does the potential deviation of a door, impacting the end user's ability to open and secure their door.

“Through partnership and innovation, we designed the AV4 autoLock to overcome the well-known industry issue of thermal expansion and adapt to changing conditions, offering reliable security and ease of use for end users.”

Testing against real-world conditions

Winkhaus wanted to measure the real-world impact that AV4 can have on a door's ease of use, completing extensive testing, including benchmarking AV4’s performance against the market-leading AV2 and competitor's solutions, plus inviting end-users to test solutions against the simulated impact of thermal expansion compared to other locks on the market.

When it comes to thermal expansion, the industry-standard tolerance for doors is up to 5mm, with a tolerance of +or-2mm being commonplace.

To simulate deviation, packers were inserted in 2mm increments, with initial measurements being taken from zero deviation.

The doors used were from the same fabricator, the same batch of manufacture and all hardware, other than the locks and keeps, were the same.

The invited research group included individuals with arthritis, disabled family members, and elderly individuals, all of whom have struggled to operate locks, suffering from the impact of thermal expansion previously.

The results from all testing were conclusive, with AV4 continuing to operate with ease to double the industry door standard.

AV4 reception and impact

AV4 is a revolutionary product that is changing the accepted norm, showing people how easy it can be to operate a locking mechanism – even in the face of thermal expansion.

Mike Rushen, Sales Director for Winkhaus UK, said:

“Designed with extensive insights into problematic door operation and tested rigorously, the AV4 autoLock has been designed to significantly reduce callouts and remedial works.

“We have worked closely with leading door leaf providers and major manufacturers to ensure this lock sets a new standard in reliability.

“We are delighted with the early success of AV4 and proud to receive the recognition of the National Fenestration Awards, especially as this is through the nominations and votes of our customers and the impact AV4 is having in the market.”

Marketing support

At Winkhaus UK, everything we do is centred around guaranteeing the success of our customers, providing added-value products, services, and solutions to ensure they have maximum competitiveness.

The marketing team have worked closely with customers to provide a wide range of assets to promote AV4, which are all available to download from the Winkhaus Portal, so they are able to effectively market, install, and maintain Winkhaus products.

We are proud of the recognition of Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year by the National Fenestration Awards and all who placed a nomination for us in this category.

Integrating targeting digital content with customer and end-user testimonials, our campaign for AV4 allowed the product’s features and benefits to speak for themselves, amplifying its reception in the market.

Specification and Installation: The Key to Effective Door Controls

Safe and seamless movement in our built environment hinges on accurately specified and installed door hardware, explains Russell Marks, managing director of Boss Door Controls.

With millions of doors used each and every day, it’s important to recognise the details behind effective access and egress.

Whether it’s the regular composite doors found in our homes, the electromechanical access points located in public settings, or the emergency exit fire doors that keep us safe in our work and leisure spaces; door hardware plays an integral role in the safety, security and accessibility of our buildings.

Doorsets are assembled in a variety of configurations, sizes and styles, yet, their operation is always reliant on door control components such as hinges, locks, latches and door closers.

Take fire doors for example, which are designed to stop the spread of smoke and fire when closed and provide an effective means of escape when open.

When operating as intended, a fire door will work in tandem with each of its hardware components, but should one area fail, its fire resistant capabilities become compromised, leaving a building and its occupants at risk.

With that in mind, just how significant is accurate specification and installation?

Suitable specification

Incorrect hardware specification is a common problem associated with building safety.

Door controls will directly influence the functionality, accessibility and durability of doors, and as such, it’s essential to understand a building and its user’s needs when choosing between hardware options.

Considering factors such as fire safety and inclusive design, specifiers and decision makers are urged to review the door application itself, confirming the chosen hardware meets the required performance ratings, fire ratings and the latest building standards.

Where many buildings require escape routes for example, it is necessary for all doors located on those routes to have suitable exit hardware installed - which is determined by a number of factors including the building’s size and whether it is public facing or not.

Equally, it is also a legal requirement for all exit devices to comply with the latest revisions of EN 1125 or EN 179 and to possess UKCA and CE markings.

With occupant safety and legal compliance on the line, it’s clear that specification should never be undervalued.

In fact, by focusing on a project’s requirements as opposed to quick, cost-saving wins, decision makers can preserve the functionality and safety of buildings whilst adding real value for occupants.

Fixing improper installation

In many cases, an appropriately specified and perfectly operational door control device can be found ineffective solely as a result of poor installation.

Door hardware installation remains a pain point for the fire safety industry specifically, with evidence suggesting that incorrect installation is one of the leading causes of fire door failure.

Hardware products are often unique to the manufacturer, with distinctive components, fittings and fixing points, and as a result, they should never be approached as like for like installation projects.

Instead, during installation, installers must look to follow manufacturer guidelines and fitting instructions.

With door closers for example, a fire door’s integrity can quickly become compromised as a result of alignment issues and improper installation methods.

Consequently, a fire door may not be able to latch or close fully from its standing position, leaving gaps large enough for smoke and fire to pass through in an emergency situation.

Where there is currently no legal framework to assess the competency of installers, it’s important for teams to plan ahead, appreciating that door hardware installation is a specialised task.

To further raise safety standards and improve installation accuracy, conscious manufacturers share a wealth of information and detailed walkthroughs in the form of installation templates, product datasheets and video guides.

Additional guidance can usually be found online, with the product packaging, or can be requested directly from the manufacturer.

These materials can also be useful post-installation, where teams are required to perform regular maintenance periods as part of their obligations.

How Allegion UK can help

Boss Door Controls is part of the Allegion UK group, known for its wealth of resources designed to help responsible persons, duty holders and professionals undertake product specification, installation and maintenance checks on fire doors and hardware.

For accessible fire door hardware support, Allegion’s new ‘Fire Door Hardware Fundamentals’ guide is available for download and combines expert guidance with helpful terminology and useful fire door safety checklists.

DoorBird - Flying High Since 2014

How a Berlin Start-Up Became a Pioneer in Door Communication

Ingenuity and high quality once made Germany a great place to do business.

But even today, both of these points are still real keys to success. Bird Home Automation GmbH’s story from Berlin shows that focusing on core economic virtues can pave the way to dominating an entire market in just ten years.

Berlin, 2014, Joachimsthaler Straße. Not far from Kurfürstendamm, Berlin's number 1 shopping boulevard, a handful of people are working high up on the 13th floor to conquer the global market for smart door intercom systems with a compact and ultra-modern and, above all, high-quality and affordable product: DoorBird.

The goal was to make it possible for residents all over the world to speak to their visitors at the door and even open the door for them, no matter where they may be at that moment.

In autumn 2014, the time had come: The very first models had an HD camera with a 180° ultra-wide angle and night vision mode, a motion sensor, Wi-Fi, and various connections.

The comprehensive range of equipment was a decisive competitive advantage, and this was also immediately recognized:

On December 23, 2014, a customer from Orlando, Florida, placed the very first DoorBird order at www.doorbird.com.

The first sale in Germany followed just two days later to a customer near Cologne.

Smart Door Communication Taken to the Next Level

But the first DoorBirds were far from the end of the story.

While the so-called D10x series was still maturing into its final version in the company’s early days, another product range was already in the works:

This range satisfied the high demand for models made of high-quality material (stainless steel) for flush or surface mounting, with the same technical functionality.

Accessories such as the BirdGuard additional camera or an alarm siren were also taken into account.

The small company then became an integral part of the door intercom market.

Over the next few years, new or expanded door intercom models, indoor stations, upgrade and access control systems, and accessory products were consistently introduced.

By 2024, just ten years after the company’s foundation, the total number of products would be 2,300 if you were to factor in the different colour options available.

Almost every one of these many products has been met with widespread approval from customers in 161 countries.

And that’s no shock because from day one, DoorBird has always precisely tailored its innovations to meet the needs of customers.

Go West Meets Made in Germany

Whether it was more products or more employees, The DoorBird family around the founders Bernd Müller and Sascha Keller continued to grow to create the best possible product experience.

From the very first minute, DoorBird was based in Berlin. DoorBird still designs, tests, and manufactures products in the German capital.

And for good reason. ‘Made in Germany’ is the promise that DoorBird makes to its customers:

All products are developed internally, all design phases undergo strict controls, and each finished product is extensively tested in specially developed test environments.

This in-house approach ensures the highest level of quality and reliability - the high degree of compatibility of the DoorBirds further enhances user-friendliness.

Thanks to a well-documented interface (API), the products can be easily integrated into smart environments.

They can thus interact with a wide variety of garage doors or smart door locks, for example.

This means the customer can combine smart home applications from different manufacturers according to their own taste and do not have to commit to a single brand.

In 2024, the DoorBird Connect network has over 80 integration partners.

Although the know-how and production were located in Berlin, right from the outset, the two founders saw the USA as one of the most important markets.

The decision to present the DoorBird directly at a US trade fair was part of this thinking.

Home automation and security concepts were prevalent there much earlier than in Europe; the successful trade fair appearance in January 2015 confirmed the founders in their strategic direction and actions.

In the summer of 2015, the company moved into its first premises on American soil in San Francisco - with its proximity to Silicon Valley, one of the most important locations for the IT and high-tech industry worldwide.

San Francisco was the ideal starting point for conquering the US market.

By quickly specialising in the upscale residential segment and the B2B business with electricians, DoorBird chose an extremely successful path.

In 2021, the second location was opened in Jacksonville, Florida, to be even closer to partners and customers on the American East Coast.

Part of a Big Family

With their consistent product and sales strategy, the two founders set the course for success right from the start. DoorBird has grown continuously for many years through its own efforts.

In 2022, they took the opportunity to think even bigger with a strong partner at their side and secure a leading, globally relevant position for DoorBird in the market for IP door intercom systems in the long term.

Large-scale projects such as hotels, commercial facilities, and entire residential complexes, in particular, are becoming increasingly important and offer enormous potential for DoorBird’s future.

Since 2022, Bird Home Automation GmbH has been part of the ASSA ABLOY Group.

ASSA ABLOY is the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of locking and security systems for everything to do with doors.

Following the acquisition of DoorBird, ASSA ABLOY now has products that can be used worldwide in the area of door communication.

After all, there will be other innovative products in the future, of course always geared towards the customers' needs.

Meeting these needs with top-quality products, no matter what the application and anywhere in the world, is what the company wants to do - always made with love in Berlin. Made in Germany.

Distinction Doors Launches Grandeur Collection

Distinction Doors is excited to introduce the Grandeur Collection – an improved range of 70mm door styles which deliver increased thermal efficiency and security alongside luxe styling and the quality you would expect from a Distinction door.

The collection takes the essence of the company’s former 70mm double rebated door range and elevates it.

The UK’s largest supplier of composite doors has added more door styles and glass designs and introduced a new slab which opens up three further design options.

Each slab now has the added feature of a security board.

Emma Folwds, marketing manager for Distinction Doors comments:

“This is an important step in helping our fabricators and their customers make the most of premium opportunities.

“There is growing demand for larger, more substantial doors – driven largely by the steel and aluminium door market and we’re pleased to offer an attractive, high-quality alternative.

“The Grandeur Collection will enable customers to upsell and also target homeowners who are looking to significantly upgrade their homes.”

The Grandeur Collection is available now.

New designs

Alongside signature and traditional cottage styles, Distinction has added door designs from the Contemporary Esprit and Contemporary Renown ranges.

Many glazed designs have left, centre and right design options too.

The door supplier has also brought in the GD01 slab from its Infinity range which can be configured into three more designs.

Distinction anticipates that these will prove popular with modern homeowners.

As will another new addition – the clean and contemporary Chatsworth and Wentworth decorative glass designs.

Why choose the Grandeur Collection

What sets the Grandeur Collection apart is the weight and quality of the doors.

They are nearly 50% thicker than the company’s standard composite doors and homeowners can feel and hear the difference; closing a 70mm door is hugely satisfying.

Warmer, more comfortable homes

This door collection is designed to keep heat in and allow homeowners to manage their energy usage effectively.

The 70mm door core offers 35% better thermal efficiency than the standard 44mm door core.

This is further improved with the addition of 50mm triple glazed laminated decorative glass.

Fitting twin seals during fabrication can also improve noise reduction and provide extra protection against adverse weather.

Enhanced security

Thanks to the impact resistant GRP skin with rigid polymer subframe, foam core, and high-quality multi-point locks, the Grandeur Collection offers security that far exceeds both PVCu and timber doors.

Plus, the addition of the new security board makes an already secure door even more secure and gives added peace of mind to homeowners.

Functional and stylish

Each door style features Distinction’s authentic woodgrain effect which is also repeated on the glazing cassette.

When it comes to colour, homeowners can choose from an exclusive colour palette.

The glazed 70mm door styles are compatible with Distinction decorative and obscure glass.

Finally, the Grandeur Collection is easy to install and can fit into any existing PVCu outer frame and uses Distinction’s deglazable cassette.

To add the Grandeur Collection to your range and to find your nearest Distinction Doors fabricator, please get in touch.

Caterham unveils limited-edition Seven CSR Twenty

Caterham has launched its latest limited-edition model, the Seven CSR Twenty, to celebrate 20 years of the CSR chassis.

It’s the first vehicle for the UK market built in Caterham’s new multi-million-pound factory in Dartford.

Only 20 examples will be available to UK customers, with prices starting from £79,995.

The performance of the four-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine delivers a brake horsepower of 210 (bhp), revs up to 7,600 rpm, 0 – 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 136mph.

The model also includes a 5-speed manual transmission and ventilated front discs with quad-piston calipers.

To signify the anniversary, the model boasts the most premium finish ever seen on a Seven.

Its interior features a satin carbon dashboard, CSR Twenty edition dials, a premium leather tunnel top, Alcantara gearstick and handbrake gaiters, plush, black carpets and leather Momo steering wheel.

For all 20 exclusive owners of the CSR Twenty, a numbered plaque from one to 20 is located between the seats on the rear interior panel.

In addition, the CSR Twenty seats are designed with premium leather, Alcantara inserts, red stitching and CSR Twenty logos, resulting in a Seven that is unmatched in terms of quality and finish.

The car's exterior features a Seven 620-style nose cone and front wings, LED front and rear lights, black Mohair boot and weather gear, red brake calipers, a two-tone Union Flag grille and, for the first time on any UK model, the exclusive-to-CSR Vulcan 15” alloys.

Customers also have a choice of two premium colours, Kinetic Grey and Dynamic Silver.

Bob Laishley, Caterham Cars CEO, said:

“This is, without doubt, the most premium Seven we’ve ever built.

“The interior of the car is a level up from what we’ve produced before, thanks to an array of high-quality materials used throughout.

“When you combine this with the exhilarating and engaging handling of our CSR chassis, this really is a Caterham built for longer distance road trips.

“It’s a vehicle that truly celebrates 20 years of our CSR chassis and I’m proud to see it being hand built here in our new Dartford factory.”

Caterham will also make an additional 20 units available to the US market.

ASSA ABLOY launches new guide and CPD about the ‘Golden Thread’

With the ‘Golden Thread’ becoming increasingly vital to construction, ASSA ABLOY has launched a new guide and CPD to help clarify its impact on all stakeholders in the build process and accelerate its adoption.

Titled “The ‘Golden Thread’: A Quick Guide”, the guide explains what the concept means from early design stage through the construction phase and future building management, detailing their responsibilities and how they can ensure they comply. It is complemented by ASSA ABLOY’s new RIBA approved CPD on the topic, which educates industry professionals on the issues in detail.

Peter Ashworth, Director & Head of Specification & OEM at ASSA ABLOY, comments:
“The ‘Golden Thread’ is here to stay and only those who embrace it will prosper in the construction industry of the future. The RIBA accredited CPD along with the guide will help all those involved in new build construction understand their responsibilities so they can ensure compliance and safety as outlined in the new Building Safety Act.”
The guide makes clear that architects have a unique set of responsibilities with regard to the ‘Golden Thread’, which derives from Dame Judith Hackitt’s ‘Building a Safer Future’ report, written in the wake of the Grenfell fire.

These include ensuring that plans, specifications, and material choices are comprehensively documented and easily accessible; documenting regulatory compliance information; and considering the long-term implications of design decisions and materials used to ensure the ‘Golden Thread’ remains unbroken post-handover.

The document also introduces Openings Studio™, ASSA ABLOY’s cloud-based, BIM plug-in tool for the creation, visualisation, modification and management of door openings. Helping to meet the challenges of the ‘Golden Thread’, Openings Studio, along with its linked user-friendly mobile app, enables architects to contribute to the digital record.

Each door logged in Openings Studio is automatically assigned a unique smart tag that can be affixed to the door, enabling direct access to details including installation, inspection and service history. Additionally, the platform ensures all operational guides, such as technical data sheets and warranty information, can be stored in one place and is accessible at the click of a button.
Peter adds: “The new guidelines require every organisation involved in the design, build and maintenance process, including architects, to keep a record of everything they do. That’s exactly what Openings Studio provides for doors. It allows architects to upload images, documents, specs and comments throughout the process. This means there will always be evidence that they have met the requirements, protecting them against the potential repercussions of not meeting the guidelines.”
You can download “The ‘Golden Thread’: A Quick Guide” and discover more about the new ASSA ABLOY CPD here: www.assaabloy.com.

For more information on ASSA ABLOY Openings Studio™, please visit www.assaabloy.com.

Locks, Knobs and Two Smoking Barrel Bolts Ironmongery Podcast Debuts

A newly launched podcast is shaking up the architectural ironmongery trade, tackling the issues that get the door and door hardware trade fired up.

Locks, Knobs and Two Smoking Barrel Bolts, the first podcast of its kind in the sector, features industry heavyweights discussing controversial topics like spec breaking, competency, and testing.

Hosted by former Architectural Ironmongery Journal editor Helen Curry, Locks, Knobs and Two Smoking Barrel Bolts takes a straight-talking, irreverent approach to industry hot topics.

The podcast is available on all major platforms—Apple Podcasts, Amazon, Spotify, and Deezer—and releases new episodes monthly.

The debut episode, "Breaking Bad: What’s Happening with Spec Breaking?" features three leading figures from the AI trade discussing this challenging industry issue.
“We aim to bring a no-nonsense, candid perspective to the issues that get everyone in the door and hardware trade fired up,” says Helen Curry.

“Expect lively debates and deep dives from top names in the sector. We’re eager to spark conversations across the trade with independent voices on the topics that truly matter. Upcoming episodes will explore areas such as competency, the future of traditional AIs, the decline of BS476, and testing standards.”
The podcast encourages trade professionals—and those outside the industry—to join the discussion on LinkedIn, where they can share their views, suggest future topics, and even volunteer as guests.
