Continual Improvements, Enhancing Customer Experience

Making it easy and Winning Together are phrases commonly used by the team at Alunet Systems.  Knowing a great supplier when you experience one is a key driver of their people.

This behind-the-scenes passion and energy provides Alunet customers with a valued competitive advantage in their local markets.

This winning together mentality is underpinned by the refocused culture of continuous improvement in everything Alunet do.

During quarter 4 of 2024, the management team turned their focus to three major areas of process that could directly impact their fabricators‘ experience when partnering with Alunet Systems.

Phil Rotheram, Group Commercial Director, explains:

“We are always seeking ways to continually enhance our products, people, service and after-care to help fabricators prosper and grow; the wider team have reviewed, assessed and improved a number of core areas.”

Left to right: Rob Taylor - Operations Director, Phil Rotheram – Group Commercial Director,
Steve Kendrick – Director, Chris Armes – Design & Technical Director,
Oliver Lake – Finance Director

Rob Taylor, Operations Director, was the project lead during these process improvements. Rob said:

“Over the past year, specifically the last 3-6 months, our team have reinvigorated how we serve our partner fabricators.

“We have implemented many process improvements behind the scenes, with each enhancement always focussing on achieving the overall aim of our business which is to become a service leader in a market where doing what you say you will, with honesty and transparency, is so vital in underpinning what we offer, and most importantly, exceeding what our partners expect.”

Phil continues:

“As a business, we ALWAYS pride ourselves on our service and quality.

“Unrivalled Customer Service and although we understand that issues may arise occasionally, we set ourselves high standards on our speed of resolution and the high level of service that we provide to our customers, achieving consistently an impressive 99.7% delivery accuracy!”

Rob adds:

“We have tightened up on our warranty process to set clear guidelines for the control of warranty claims.

“This makes the process easy regarding what is acceptable and what would be rejected while ensuring issues are correctly recorded with photographic or video evidence.

“Clear & Transparent Warranties. The aim of these improvements is to use this information to improve our internal processes and swiftly identify negative impacts on services.

“Continuous improvements are actioned swiftly, ensuring that our time is rightly spent resolving legitimate claims speedily and effectively without time-draining and service-sapping red tape.”

Phil summarises:

“All claims are now handled by a team of highly experienced customer-centred people who ensure that any issues are resolved in a timely manner, reducing any inconvenience to their customers.

“A team member follows up on all successful claims to ensure that fabricating partners are happy with the resolution before closing any ticket.

“In doing this, the customer is central to the process and is always involved and communicated.

“Customer feedback has been excellent, with the changes providing structure and pace to a process that other systems houses can often ignore.”

Rob concludes:

“We have worked tirelessly to enhance further and improve the quality of finished metal.

“We want our product to reach our fabricators in an ‘as manufactured’ state, right off the end of the extruder and straight into fabrication.”

As a result of Alunet’s collaborative and informed feedback, they now utilise both spiral wrap and bubble wrap, sustainably sourced and produced from recycled material to secure all packs of profile in transit.

They have also improved the taping on profiles to offer better protection.

Protection is not the only area of improvement; Alunet has standardised depth readers on all profiles produced.

This is additional quality control to ensure the correct material specification reaches their partners, minimising product defaults and returns.

Finally, they are rolling through a bar-coding and revised labelling process to identify production and packaged products.

Not only does this help with traceability, but it has also significantly improved the time taken to pick, pack, ship, and unload products.

Time is money, and where possible, Alunet continuously improves in everything they do as they firmly believe it is better than delayed perfection.

The mission is clear, Alunet make it happen for their customer.

Doing what they say they will is simple and effective.

Making it easy and Winning Together takes this to the next level.

Whatever their fabricators’ expectations, needs, or queries, Alunet is positioning itself to ensure that they have the right person, the right skill and, importantly, the right level of passion and response locally to ensure its customers have what they expect when they want it.

For further information, contact the Alunet Systems highly experienced and friendly sales team at info@alunetsystems.co.uk, 01924 350 110 or visit www.alunetsystems.co.uk.

The Fort Range of Side Hinged Garage Doors has Just Taken a Leap Forward...

Since the introduction of insulated doors in 2023 to complement the single-skin steel doors, the team at Fort has been hard at work developing the range.

Ultimate in security and thermal efficiency

There are now FOUR ranges of side hinged, with each range offering additional performance...right up to the Fort Pro Therma side hinged garage door.

It’s a masterpiece of design with a thermally broken door giving a ‘U value’ of 1.4 and partnered with ‘Garage-Protect’ 3-star security, for what Fort has described as the ‘Ultimate in security and
thermal efficiency’
.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the four ranges:

Fort Classic Side Hinged Range - The classic, un-insulated choice...

Fort’s Classic range of side hinged doors in steel is brought up to date with all round lip seals and effective cable operated locking.

Fort Pro Side Hinged Range - The contemporary, un-insulated choice...

Pro side hinged doors combine a single skin steel door panel within an aluminium sub frame, all pre-hung in an aluminium frame.

Doors are un-insulated and fitted with mortice locking.

Fort Pro20 Insulated Side Hinged Range - The insulated choice...

Pro20 insulated doors have 20mm thick double skin insulated panels, a ‘U value’ of 2.8 and mortice locking with 1-star security as standard.

Fort Pro Therma Insulated Side Hinged Range - The ultimate secure and insulated choice...

The high-performance side hinged garage door with unmatched thermal performance, strength and security with 51mm thick aluminium profile, thermally broken profiles with insulated panels, thermally broken frame and threshold and Garage-Protect 3-star security as standard.

At 2.8/1.4 (based on a 2250mm x 2040mm door), the Fort insulated door compares favourably to some types of double-glazed windows.

Commenting on the new ranges, Lee Moon said...

“The new doors are a brilliant step up, which reflects our big investment in capability and capacity at Fort.
“We’ve brought all the key processes inhouse, so we have total control over the quality and design.
“We know the new doors are a winner and we’re geared up to meet the demand in 2025!”

Road tripping: Goodwood Revival to celebrate 75 years of Volkswagen Split Screen in opening parade

Every year, the Goodwood Revival’s track opening parade brings together an eclectic mix of vehicles which converge on the historic circuit at the start of each day to kick start proceedings.

From the event’s largest motorcycle parade in 2023, to the brigade of beach buggies last year, it’s now the turn of the Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screen.

The 2025 Goodwood Revival’s congregation of campers is set to be the most varied collection of Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screens to be brought together.

Over the years, the model has enjoyed huge popularity and has been adapted for a wide range of uses, including ambulances, fire engines, transporters and even ice cream vans.

Visitors to the Revival are certainly in for a treat as vans of all varieties in a rainbow of colours take to the track each morning.

Introduced by Volkswagen in 1950, the Type 2 Split Screen was the marque’s second mass-produced light motor vehicle, manufactured in Wolfsburg for nearly twenty years up until 1967.

While many remained as commercial vans, the vehicle’s use and image shifted in the 1960s to embrace holidaymaking with models including the Kombi, Microbus, Samba, and Camper introduced.

Thus, the Volkswagen ‘Splitties’ became a globally recognised symbol of freedom and adventure, encouraging drivers to embrace the spirit of the open road.

75 years on, the VW Type 2 has created countless memories for generations of travellers and the Goodwood Revival’s track opening parade will venerate the vans that have been enjoyed by so many.

The Duke of Richmond CBE DL, founder of the Goodwood Revival, said:

“The Goodwood Revival has a long history of celebrating significant vehicles – everything from the Mini and Fiat 500 to the Ferrari 250 GTO and Jaguar D-type.

This year it is the turn of the ‘Split Screen’ Volkswagen Type 2, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025.

The Type 2 is more than just an automotive icon; it is a cultural phenomenon, equally at home in campervan form on a hippie encampment or family holiday camp, as a delivery van, or even as a race car transporter.

We will be celebrating this variety by bringing together a wonderfully varied collection of VW Type 2s, which will open the track each morning in colourful fashion, and pop up across the Revival site.”

Over the weekend, the track opening parade will join a full schedule of thirteen races set to run exclusively on sustainable fuel.

Alongside taking to the track each morning, the classic VW Type 2s will take over the front two rows of the Tax Exempt Classic Car Parking, giving visitors and owners the chance to display their beloved camper in style.

Book your space here.

The Goodwood Revival will take place on Friday, 12 – Sunday, 14 September 2025 - Early bird tickets are available now at goodwood.com

Abloy UK highlights urgent need for enhanced security across highways infrastructure

Security expert Abloy UK is highlighting the urgent need for greater security and access control on highways critical infrastructure across the UK, with many bridges, viaducts and tunnels at significant and costly risk of theft, vandalism and unauthorised access.

Instances of metal theft, graffiti, and property damage have been steadily rising, with critical infrastructure such as construction sites and transport assets being frequent targets.

For example, the construction industry faces an estimated annual loss of £800 million due to theft[1], with 92% of construction site managers reporting theft and 91% experiencing vandalism on their sites[2].

What’s more, bridges and tunnels, particularly in remote or less trafficked areas, are vulnerable to graffiti, arson, and damage from unauthorised access. Underbridges and viaducts often require costly repairs due to vehicle impact or intentional damage[3].

The loss or damage of infrastructure due to criminal activity not only leads to expensive repairs but can also severely disrupt the transportation network, impact the economy, and jeopardise public safety.

David Rock, Market Development Manager – Transport, at Abloy UK, explains:
“These statistics demonstrate the urgent need for robust security and access control solutions across highways and transportation networks. With these vital assets at heightened risk, it’s imperative that measures are implemented to protect them from potential disruptions and maintain public safety.
“To address these issues, we are advising that these types of assets within the highways infrastructure are secured with either superior mechanical, electromechanical or digital locking solutions, to mitigate the risk of theft, damage or vandalism.”

With this in mind, it is recommended that mechanical padlocks used in highways environments are rated to LPS 1654 Issue 1.0. This is the latest LPCB standard for physical security and is seen as the ultimate test for padlocks, incorporating the most stringent physical attack tests, intentionally designed to meet the security needs of the UK’s critical infrastructure.

Padlocks that achieve LPCB approval to LPS 1654 have performed effectively in rigorous test programmes conducted by the BRE's highly experienced team of attack testers.

The benefit of LPS 1654 is that the locks are tested to mirror, as closely as possible, the types of attacks that a padlock might encounter in the real world, as opposed to a laboratory.

Padlocks should be graded 1 - 4 and have the “+” security rating, demonstrating that the padlock also meets the requirements defined in Annex A 6 of BS 3621 :2007 + A2 2012 and manipulation resistance class 1 defined in LP1242 Issue 2.

Abloy UK can play a critical role in enhancing security through advanced access control solutions. Its robust, high-security locks and access management systems offer security solutions that are resistant to tampering.

Abloy’s mechanical locks utilise patented disc detainer mechanisms, providing enhanced protection against drilling, picking, and other tampering methods. They are tested to LPS 1654 Issue 1.0 and a range of padlocks with security ratings ranging from 2+ to 4+ are available.

Built with rugged materials, the Abloy mechanical locks are also designed to endure extreme weather and resist corrosion and boast IP68 ingress protection rating, making them suitable for use on bridges, tunnels, and other exposed infrastructure elements.

Plus, the company’s patented key systems allow access permissions to be controlled by issuing specific keys to authorised individuals only, helping to prevent unauthorised entry and deterring vandalism.

With Abloy’s digital solutions such as PROTEC2 CLIQ and BEAT digital keyless padlock, organisations can take access control one step further and monitor and manage access permissions remotely. This ensures that only authorised personnel with the correct key can gain access to critical areas.

These systems also provide efficient key management, reducing the risk of lost or stolen keys by offering secure, digital alternatives. With programmable electronic keys, any access permissions can be easily updated or revoked as needed, ensuring quick response times and better control over who can access specific locations.

Furthermore, every time an electromechanical or digital key is used it generates an audit trail allowing identification of who has accessed which asset.

All Abloy locks require minimal maintenance and do not rely on power sources, reducing the need for frequent inspections and lowering long-term operating costs. This makes them a practical choice for remote or difficult-to-reach locations.

David concluded:
“Abloy UK is committed to supporting the highways sector in securing vital infrastructure and preventing costly disruptions. By implementing comprehensive access control solutions, highways authorities can enhance their security provision and mitigate the risk of theft and vandalism across critical sites.”

BSI Publishes Two New Lock Standards: BS EN 12209:2024 and BS EN 15685:2024

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has announced the publication of two significant new standards for locks and locking plates, marking a milestone in the development of secure and reliable locking systems.

BS EN 12209:2024

The first standard, BS EN 12209:2024, addresses mechanically operated single-point locks and locking plates. This revised standard replaces the earlier BS EN 12209:2016, which is now withdrawn.

However, BS EN 12209:2003 remains the only standard valid for CE and UKCA marking purposes, despite being withdrawn in 2016. It continues to serve as a harmonised standard under the EU Construction Products Regulation and as a designated standard under the UK Construction Products Regulations 2013 (as amended).

Work is already underway to update BS 3621, the standard for thief-resistant locks, to reflect the changes introduced in BS EN 12209:2024.

BS EN 15685:2024

The second standard, BS EN 15685:2024, is a completely new standard covering mechanically operated multipoint locks, latches, and locking plates. It does not replace any existing standard.

While BS EN 15685:2024 is not currently harmonised or designated, meaning CE and UKCA markings cannot yet be applied to these products, its publication sets the stage for the development of a UK-specific standard.

This mirrors the approach used in BS 3621, which incorporates elements from BS EN 12209.

Michael Skelding, DHF’s General Manager, said:
“The publication of these new standards is most welcome, particularly in the case of the long-awaited EN 15685, which has been seen as a necessary companion to EN 12209 for many years. The work of a succession of DHF members over that time, together with the other experts on the European standards committee, has finally borne fruit. The next stage is to upgrade them to harmonised/designated standards to enable their use for conformity marking.”
Standards are available from the BSI Shop. DHF members are reminded that, as a benefit of membership, they are entitled to a 30% discount on any hard copy standard purchased via DHF.

All Systems Go for FIT Show 2025

It’s all systems go for FIT Show 2025, which has seen a raft of brands sign up to exhibit for its 29 April - 1 May Birmingham NEC event in recent weeks.

Visitors will be able to see a broad range of brands, products and services at the UK’s only dedicated trade show for the window, door, flat glass, hardware, components and roofing industry.

Alongside increasing the footprint of the show by 30%, organisers have delivered on increasing the representation of systems houses, something its post 2023 survey highlighted as an area exhibitors and visitors felt needed to be improved upon.

Systems houses set to exhibit at FIT Show this year include ALUK, Cortizo, Smart Systems, Exlabesa, Residence Collection, Aluplast and FIT Show stalwarts, Selecta Systems who have exhibited at every edition.

Speaking about the importance of FIT Show 2025, Mark Walker, marketing manager for Selecta Systems comments:

“FIT Show plays a big part in our overall marketing strategy.

“It’s an event that we’ve been part of since day one, having seen and experienced the real value and benefits of being part of FIT.

“Nothing beats face-to-face interaction, something we’ve lost over the last few years, especially when you’re demonstrating your latest products and innovations to the industry.

“People want to visualise, touch and immerse themselves in the overall experience and the FIT Show provides us with that opportunity, with a large industry specific audience at our disposal over the three days.

“With some exciting new additions to our portfolio of products and services in the pipeline, we’re looking forward to FIT Show 2025 with huge optimism and confidence.

“Not only will you see Selecta show off new additions to our hugely successful ADVANCE 70 System, but you will also see the launch of another set of innovative developments to our Connect customer portal.

“We are confident that the latest developments will be a game changer and set a new standard in how fabricators generate sales leads, manage sales and fabricate.

“FIT Show 2025 will be the year to Connect and #bepartofthefamily.”

Russell Yates, Managing Director at AluK, says:

“I’ve always been a huge supporter of the FIT Show – if you get your approach just right and really focus on the experience for visitors, it’s where the magic happens.

“Of course, we’ll be showcasing new products and service initiatives on our stand, but we’ll also be using FIT to demonstrate to both new and existing customers why AluK is now such an exciting and rewarding systems company to partner with.

“We’ll be giving everyone who comes to the stand a taste of what it means to be an AluK customer, and we intend to create the kind of buzz around our brand that you can only get at a live event.

“We all know that fabricators and installers want to see more systems companies at FIT and, if my experience at previous shows is anything to go by, companies who aren’t there will undoubtedly miss out.”

Andy Green, Selecta Systems sales director adds:

“FIT Show has always and continues to be an important part of the calendar year for Selecta.

“Not only do you get to see and exhibit the latest innovations within the industry, but FIT Show also presents you with the opportunity to meet with customers, potential clients and industry colleagues face-to-face in an engaging and relaxed environment outside of the workplace, office or factory.

“With just shy of 10,000 visitors at each of the last two FIT Shows, we have a large dedicated audience to target over the course of the three days to demonstrate how Selecta, our range of products and services can help fabricators and installers businesses grow.

“That’s why FIT Show 2025 will again provide Selecta with the perfect platform to showcase and demo our latest products and services directly to fabricators and installers, whether they be existing or potential partners.

“With new additions to our ADVANCE 70 System set to be featured and further enhancements to our marketing support package, we’re really excited about this year’s show.

“This is why Selecta continues to support the industry’s number one show, being the only PVCu systems company to exhibit at every FIT Show since it began!”

FIT Show event director, Nickie West added:

“We take our audience feedback incredibly seriously, which is why we also invest a significant amount of time in surveying our exhibitors and visitors, running focus groups and creating multiple touchpoints for them to share their views on the show.

“When our post 2023 show survey highlighted that people felt there was a lack of systems houses at the event, we made it our mission to spotlight the great brands who already supported us as well as developing a targeted campaign to help attract even more systems houses to exhibit alongside these.

“The fact that we have retained the support of brands such as Selecta Systems for every edition of the event, and that we’ve seen the return of the likes of ALUK, Residence Collection, Cortizo, Smart Systems, Exlabesa and Aluplast shows the importance of FIT Show within their own marketing strategies for 2025 and beyond.

“I’d like to thank them for their support and I’m excited to hear the wider feedback on the impact of their presence from the sector post FIT Show 2025.

“As well as an increased presence from systems houses at FIT Show 2025, our audience will be able to take advantage of new and improved features, such as the Installer Demo Zone.

“We’re also excited to share the details of our highly targeted and timely CPD programme which we are curating in consultation with the GGF and FENSA to cover the latest regulatory and legislative changes around issues such as building regs.

“It’s going to be an unmissable event for the whole sector.”

Visitors can now register to attend the UK’s number one event for the window, door, flat glass, hardware, components and roofing industry for free via the FIT Show website - www.fitshow.co.uk.
