Motorists like cameras but many still don’t trust them

Eighty-two per cent of people now think it is acceptable for authorities to use speed cameras, however 45 per cent think that raising income is still a main reason for their use, according to the results of the IAM’s  annual speed camera survey.

Speed awareness courses are also popular – 72 per cent of people think that speed awareness courses are a good idea.

The results show that people think speed cameras are beneficial to road safety. Eighty-five per cent of people think that speed cameras have helped to contribute to the fall in road deaths since 1990s.

The results for the home nations vary:

•    Speed cameras are least popular in Wales where 32 per cent of people think their use is not acceptable.  The survey also shows that Wales has the highest rate of people caught speeding – In the last three years 27 per cent of people were caught speeding or knew someone in the household who was caught speeding.

•    In contrast, cameras are most popular in Scotland where only 15 per cent think they are unacceptable. Only 14 per cent of Scottish were caught speeding or knew someone in the household who was.

•    In England, 19 per cent of people were convicted or knew someone in their household who was caught speeding in the last three years. 20 per cent think their use is not acceptable.

Generally, people find that speed cameras are more acceptable than five years ago. In 2007, 30 per cent of respondents said speed cameras were not acceptable, a figure which has reduced every year to 16 per cent this year.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “Simply catching and fining drivers does not change drivers’ awareness of the hazards of excessive speed. The popularity of speed awareness courses show that the public think training is the best option.

“Speed cameras are an essential part of the policing toolkit and are becoming more and more accepted, but it’s clear that some people need reassuring about their purpose and funding.”

Speed Cameras: A snapshot of public opinion published August 2012. This report is based on a survey which the IAM, the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, have commissioned every summer for the last six years.

EasyGates Distribution and ASO open new showroom and training facility in Halesowen.

EasyGates Distribution and ASO have recently proudly announced the opening of their brand new showroom and training facility, located within EasyGates’ 13,500 square foot base in Halesowen, West Midlands.

This new facility will not only be a state of the art space for keeping up to date with all gate automation safety legislation, but it will also provide an area for practical demonstrations and the chance for people to have a hands on learning experience. The 1200 square foot training room has been fitted with full presentation facilities and different automated gate installations to replicate scenarios a gate installer may have to deal with on site.

Following on from the success of the Gate Safety Conference 2012, EGD/ASO have been even more determined to ensure and enable all gate installations are up to Government Health & Safety Legislation and look forward to working with the Door and Hardware Federation in developing courses to facilitate this goal.

“Part of our long term plan is to be a resource base for safety training and support within the gate automation industry.” Says EGD’s managing Director Tony Gooding.

“We are aware that having a demonstration area and giving people the chance to actually see the practical application of safety measures, can be a very valuable tool in ensuring installations are all conforming to current safety legislation.”

RISE IN CAR SCRATCH AND RUN INCIDENTS

Revive! reports increase in car park incident dishonesty- Surge in car vandalism as drivers scratch and run.

Car vandalism and damage by an unknown third party is on the increase according to a new survey carried by leading smart repairer Revive!.

Revive! specialises in repairing minor scuffs and scrapes to vehicle bodywork and alloy wheels. It has the largest network of smart repairers in the UK and is one of the few IMI accredited training centres in the country carrying out work for small business owners, private motorists and the trade.

As the preferred supplier of SMART repairs to major car dealerships and fleet operators its customers include Alfa Romeo Fiat, Lex Autolease and Mercedes.

Survey produced some interesting results

The company questioned over 100 technicians for the Revive! 2012 UK Smart Repair Survey. Of those surveyed the number one repair was bumper scuffs with alloy wheel repairs coming second. The next most common reason for call out was vehicle vandalism or third party damage reported by 19% of technicians. A large proportion of the damage had been done by an unknown person.

‘UNBREAKABLE’ HAMMERGLASS NOW OFFERED EXCLUSIVELY IN THE UK

Fed up with replacing another window in your business smashed by vandals?

ATB Secure, specialists in enhanced security commercial aluminium windows and doors is now offering customers the chance to specify Hammerglass, the unique ‘new generation’ polycarbonate sheet, 300 times stronger than glass and almost unbreakable, in its complete range of products.

Available in 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 17 and 20 mm sheets, Hammerglass is recognised and licenced by Secured by Design and certified according to BS EN 356, Security Class P8B, which is equivalent to the highest safety rating for anti-burglary grilles and rolling shutters.

To obtain this classification the glass must withstand 70 blows with an axe. In the case of Hammerglass, the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute gave up the test after 72 blows and then had to use a forklift truck twice to pull the axe out of the glass!

With its unique surface coating of silicon oxide (just like a layer of glass) Hammerglass sheets are resistant to most chemicals and acids and are scratch resistant. The coating also provides a UV protection of 99.96% so that the glass will not become cloudy, bleached or age over time.

Hammerglass makes an aesthetically pleasing alternative to security grills and long term provides savings in places like petrol stations, shops, restaurants, schools where windows are often broken by burglars or vandals.

For more information on Hammerglass, visit www.hammerglass.co.uk or www.atbsystems.co.uk

Fee For Intervention (FFI) – What businesses need to know

From October, the Health & Safety Executive will have the power to charge a business, whenever it finds a health & safety breach, or “contravention”, at the rate of £124 per hour under a new charging regime called “Fee For Intervention”.

We spoke to Alastair Hall, Head of Health & Safety at compliance specialists Citation plc, about what these changes mean for business owners.

Why is the HSE charging businesses for its time?

The HSE has had its budget cut by 35%. To bridge that gap, the Government has imposed a legal duty for the HSE to recover its costs from non compliant businesses from October.

The HSE has already closed down its free helpline, which took over 750,000 calls per annum to assist businesses and the public. This would appear to be the end of free verbal 1-2-1 health and safety advice in the UK.

What are the chances my businesses will be inspected?

There has been a reduction in the number of proactive HSE inspections. The HSE must spend a greater proportion of its time on securing compliance from high-risk industries and duty-holders businesses and poor performers rather than helping more compliant businesses improve. So the focus is on finding this rather than on helping businesses to improve. This is a shift in approach. Presumably to ensure it can recover all of its budget deficit. However, the HSE does have the power to conduct unannounced inspections and will do so where it feels necessary – so no business is “safe” from scrutiny.

Also, since business owners have a duty to comply with RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995), businesses will be on the HSE’s radar through any reportable accidents, incidents, whistleblowers or complaints made by members of the public.

So if the HSE inspects my business premises I’ll be charged £124 per hour?

Not necessarily. You will only be charged if, and from the moment, the HSE finds a contravention.

The charges will include the time it takes the inspector for writing and sending you an email or letter, and the time it takes to deal with documenting the contravention.
