Codelocks releases a series of new product updates for its best-selling locker lock

Codelocks have announced a series of product updates for its best-selling locker lock, the KitLock 1000.

The new features, which include a battery level indicator, slam latch accessory and six-digit NetCodes, are designed to make the operation and maintenance of the locks much easier to control and manage.

Grant Macdonald, Managing Director explains:
“We are constantly looking at ways to make our range of digital door, cabinet and locker locks easier to use on a daily basis and the features we’ve announced today are good examples of some of the enhancements we’ve made”.
“With the Internet of Things (IoT) continuing to take centre stage, customers tell us that greater connectivity is key and our plan is to automate more and more features to take advantage of this trend.
“An example of this is our NetCode application, where users can generate lock codes from a remote location and send them to the person requiring access via email or SMS – a process far more convenient than having to manually generate codes, and saving a great deal of time if codes need to be issued on a regular basis.”

The new product features include:

  • Battery level check – an update to the software so that users can perform a quick and easy operation to see how much battery power remains. In addition to the low battery indicator, the new feature allows users to proactively keep an eye on power levels and plan for imminent battery changes.

  • Slam latch accessory – only previously available for the KL1200 and KL1550, when fitted the new mini slam accessory allows effortless shutting of the locker door. The latch can be retrofitted to existing products or purchased for new installations.

  • Six-digit NetCode – The new KL1060 will operate with six-digit NetCodes instead of twelve. A shorter access code is an obvious benefit to the person receiving and using the code, as they are less likely to make mistakes when punching it in.

The new battery level check is included in all new KL1000 purchases, the slam latch accessory is available for £6.50 from the company’s website: www.codelocks.co.uk . The KL1060 will be available by the end of March 2016.

Codelocks designs and manufactures a range of digital door and cabinet locks for organisations that need to control access within their buildings. The locks save time and money by being easy to fit and easy to program.

Unlike other solutions, digital push-button locks don’t require complex wiring or external power, and are more cost effective for many applications. The locks offer the user a convenient standalone solution and are sold with ‘everything you need in the box’ to fit them, including parts, instructions and templates.

AluK Design Studio brings aluminium building systems expertise to the City of London

AluK (GB) is continuing its exciting business expansion with the launch of the AluK Design Studio in the City of London.

Its new design and product demonstration space will open to the public on Monday 11th April, as the company continues to grow in the UK and develop its prominence within the aluminium building systems sector.

AluK will host an open day on Thursday 7th April. To register an interest to attend, and for more information please visit www.alukdesignstudio.co.uk.

The Design Studio, which houses dramatic 7m high curtain walling displays and many other full size aluminium window and door systems, will enable customers to interact with AluK products and discuss design and installation with a team of Architectural Project Managers and engineers.

Their aim is to help customers to visualise AluK products in situ and support design decisions before specification. A range of new products will be on display at the Studio, giving visitors a first look at the latest innovations in aluminium curtain walling, window and door systems.

Graham Hurrell, Commercial Director, AluK comments:
“The AluK Design Studio will be a multifunctional space where exceptional and bespoke technical projects are planned and designed. Our Architectural Project Managers will use the area to discuss individual project needs with customers and prospects.
“We believe we are the first designer and engineer of aluminium building systems to operate such a facility in a City of London location, providing our customers with an easily accessible space to bring their clients to interact with the newest and most popular AluK systems.
“In the spirit of collaboration, our meeting spaces and AluK resources will be available for use by architects, specifiers, contractors, designers, builders, educational bodies and other visitors to the studio. Furthermore, we plan to host open CPDs, seminars and other events in the Studio, which we will advertise in due course.”

By having its Architectural Project Managers, designers and technical teams working from a central London location, the company will be able to further differentiate its commercial offer, support its architectural customers and achieve further growth in the UK market. The new Studio will also act as an international meeting area for the AluK Group which operates across the EMEA region and Asia.

Allegion Encourages Checks to Door Closing Devices

Specialist security manufacturer, Allegion, is encouraging facilities managers, fire safety managers and maintenance supervisors, as well as others in charge of safety in public sector buildings, to assess their door closing devices, in case an adjustment is necessary.

A recent warning from The Department of Health has highlighted issues in public sector buildings with regards to heavy fire doors closing too fast. The warning was prompted by a tragedy that occurred within a hospital regarding an electromagnetic hold-open door closer that was released due to a power failure and closed too quickly, despite being compliant with the British Standard BS EN 1155/4 and maintained regularly.

The Department of Health has suggested risk assessments be carried out on all fire door closing devices to assess the appropriate closing time, taking into account the occupancy of the building. To avoid such tragedies, adjustments should be made, where appropriate, to lengthen the closing time to the higher end of the tolerance and allow enough time for occupants to pass through doors safely.

Jo Milne-Rowe, specification manager at Allegion, said:
“Thousands of electromagnetically hold-open door closers are fitted every year and never encounter any issues. Still, we can’t stress enough how important it is that closing speeds are regularly checked and adjusted to suitable speeds for building users.
“For example, a less-abled person may need the door to stay open for a longer time, to allow them to pass through it. At Allegion, we offer the additional function of delayed action that can be incorporated on an electromagnetic hold-open door closer, allowing a delay between the magnet releasing on the activation of the fire alarm and the door actually beginning to close.
“Allegion products are designed to require the lowest possible level of maintenance, but the working life of these products will be significantly reduced should standard maintenance procedures not be carried out, especially where items are subject to high levels of use.
“The safety of people using our products is paramount, and we want to encourage people to maintain them, ensuring the closing speed and delayed action is suited to the situation.”

In addition to checking the closing speed of door devices, door hardware needs to be regularly serviced and maintained.

Allegion products are suited for the education, healthcare, commercial, leisure, transport and hospitality sectors, and are fully compliant with current EN requirements.

You can try out a door closer for free through Allegion’s Try Me Product Programme, which allows the security provider to set up a door closer to its optimum performance, allowing customers to experience the different performance of the door. As part of the Try Me offering, Allegion can also show maintenance and facility management teams how to install and adjust closers correctly and efficiently to guarantee safety.

For further information, on the service and maintenance of Allegion products, visit www.allegion.com/uk or contact the Customer Care Team on 01922 707400.

H&H Classics to Sell 1930 Brough Superior SS100 AGS Fitted with Cruiser Sidecar

A magnificent unrestored Brough Superior with sidecar, registration TV2003, will be on sale with H&H Classics at IWM Duxford on April 19th for an estimate of £280,000 to £350,000.

The Brough Motorcycle marque will be forever associated with T.E. Lawrence, known as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ who bought one of the first SS100s in 1925 having previously owned three Brough SS80s. The crash that would end his life came while riding another SS100, on a narrow road near his cottage in 1935.

Sixty-nine SS100s were produced in 1925 at £170 each, (equivalent to £8,700 in 2016) and were advertised by Brough as the ‘Rolls Royce of Motorcycles’. All bikes had a guarantee that they were capable of 100 mph (160 km/h). The current world record for a Brough Superior SS100 is £315,000.

George Beale, Director of H&H Classic Motorcycles, says:

“The fact that this magnificent motorcycle is unrestored only adds to its attractiveness for specialist collectors who might decide to restore or, indeed leave it in its present good condition much as it left the factory 86 years ago. It has been owned by just four previous owners, the last, the current vendor, Frank Solano has loved and used it on many rallies for the past 26 years.”
A total of 283 SS 100 models were produced from 1925 to 1934 and only 131 are known to have survived. Only 21 SS100 models were produced in 1930 and it is possible that this is the only motorcycle to have actually left the works with a sidecar fitted .The build card indicates that this machine was made to order and lists all the non standard items which were to be fitted.

The Brough, Registration number TV 2003 has a Bentley and Draper spring type frame, number S 1017 with a J.A.P overhead valve ‘V’ twin 994cc engine - number JTO/W 91700 /SC.

The bike is fitted with a 4-speed gearbox rather than the standard 3-speed item. According to the Brough Club the gearbox number indicates that this would have been fitted in 1933 and more than likely at the Brough factory.

Normally sidecars were fitted to the SS80 models which used a more sedate side valve engine rather than the sportier SS 100 overhead valve model. The sidecar is a Cruiser model fitted with a special sprung frame which was introduced in 1928. The earlier rigid frame ones caused handling problems when fitted to the Bentley and Draper framed machines.

Watch the Official Video here:

Owner, Frank Solano, says:
“I have owned TV2003 for a very long time and have travelled many mile with this bike to Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Norway, Sweden and Portugal on very many Brough rallies as well as all the annual rallies of the Brough club. As President of the club for a short while I was very active with this bike. I cannot recall how many miles I have done on the bike but I do remember all the enjoyment my wife Luise and I have had with it, as well as my grandson Derek. I liked the bike to the point of having a solid silver model created so I will very never forget her.”
Most of the ownership history of the motorcycle and sidecar is known. It left the factory on April 14th 1930 and was purchased by Mr H. J. Davies. It was then returned to the factory and re-sold to Mr H. Walker on 24th January 1931. Then there is a gap in its history until it was bought by Mr B. Clarke in 1979. It then went to Mr John Deacon in 1985 and the present owner acquired it in August 1990. It is in good original running condition and has never been restored.

The original build card, which is held by the Brough Club (a copy of which will be supplied with the bike), shows in bold type the changes that were made when it was returned to the factory before being sold to Mr Walker. These included the fitting of a twistgrip throttle control to replace the lever type.

Garador employee sets the pace

Alice Lou (left) , British Heart Foundation community fundraising
manager for Bristol and Somerset, accepts the money
raised by Garador employee Kim Kerswell

Six months after her heart stopped beating Garador sales advisor Kim Kerswell has been busy baking cakes.

Kim, 46, was rushed from Garador’s  garage door factory in Yeovil to hospital last June where they found her heart had paused for 24 seconds.

After having a pacemaker successfully fitted, Kim recovered and is now back at work, but she wanted to give something back for all the care she received.

So she joined up with the British Heart Foundation and their Wear It Beat It campaign to hold a major fund raising day at work at Garador. Co-workers at Garador all turned up in red to reflect the heart/love theme of the day and people baked a range of Valentine and heart shaped cakes along with holding a raffle.

Garador's Kim Kerswell with work colleagues, sales advisor
George Aldred (left) and warranty administrator Liam Harris,
and some of the cakes made to help raise funds
for the British Heart Foundation.

She collected £253 which has all gone to the charity.
“The money is much needed by the British Heart Foundation,” said Kim. “Every day over 500 people go to hospital suffering a heart attack and the support and information the BHF provides is invaluable.
“For instance, after my heart problems, we received full information from the BHF and now Garador have installed the company’s own defibrillator machine, such a good idea for all companies.”

Court case triggers new DHF call to check gates for safety

Powered gate owners are being urged to have their gates checked for safety after a court heard how a defective works gate collapsed and seriously injured an employee.

The advice has been issued by the Door & Hardware Federation, whose Powered Gate Group represents the leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment.

A court heard that a leaf of the telescopic gate came out of its runners and collapsed on the man. As a result of the accident in Caerphilly the man was hospitalised for ten days and was off work for a year.

Advanced Gate Ltd, Mid Glamorgan, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £5,000 costs.

The court heard how the company was contracted to manufacture and install the gate system. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into the incident found that the underlying failure of the gate mechanism was as a result of inadequate design, assessment and control measures to ensure the gate was safe for use.

HSE inspector Dean Baker said after the hearing:
“Powered gates pose a risk to employees and members of the public. Those responsible for installing, maintaining and operating these gates need to make sure they are safe during installation and use. This accident could have been avoided if the clearly foreseeable risk of the gate falling had been identified and controlled.”
Said DHF general manager and secretary Michael Skelding:
“This case underlines how important it is that automated gate owners - and all those responsible for their maintenance - must insist that the company used to install or do work on a powered gate employs properly qualified installation engineers.
“Unfortunately, unsafe installations are still being carried out by untrained personnel which results in gate installations which do not comply with legislations and are potentially dangerous. As an industry we are determined to keep on raising safety standards and confine accidents caused by dangerous gates to the history books.”
Detailed guidance on powered gate safety, including specific guidance relating to telescopic gates, can be found on www.dhfonline.org.uk . In addition, there is information about DHF safety training courses for gate installers. Visitors to the website can also access the contact details of more than 100 qualified manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered gates and powered gate automation equipment.

We post articles up to twice a day and never delete them - we only archive them each year so that they continue to remain visible to search engines.

To have your story published - just send us your news item, logo and image(s) and we will review the material, make any necessary changes to the wording / wordcount and then advise you when it will be published.

If you take display advertising or product and literature features in our printed and online publications, you will qualify for regular free postings on this blog while you continue to advertise with us.

For details on features and advertising rates please contact us or visit our website.
