Woodrite Launches New Sectional Door Brochure and Timber Gate Range

A dozen styles form Woodrite's Kielder range of sectional garage doors. The designs include the popular equivalents of steel sectional doors - Georgian and horizontal ribbed styles to designs that only timber can bring to life with vertical ribbed and glazing.

Greenhaugh Sectional Overhead Door
The range also includes the Greenhaugh style that is a "design your own door".

You decide where and how many grooves you want, Woodrite provide a confirmation drawing and make your door.

Perfect for matching to architectural details and window lines or entrance doors.

The Greenhaugh style only hints at the bespoke opportunities for design - something Woodrite has always been keen to accommodate for its customers.

Hethpool Sectional Overhead Door
The Kielder range of doors is available in Accoya(r) or cedar.

Accoya(r) brings the advantage of exceptional durability and comes with a 10 year warranty on finish.

Hot on the heels of the Kielder sectional garage door range comes Woodrite’s Kinver range of driveway gates.

Woodrite’s Kinver range of driveway gates

Built with the same attention to detail that has made Woodrite’s reputation for quality on garage doors second to none, the Kinver range is available in cedar, iroko, idigbo and Accoya®.

The classic flat and arched designs are available in solid and railed versions and there is also a 5-bar design to complete the line up. The gates are available base-coated or fully finished in the same wide range of colours as the garage door ranges.

Size for the gates are up to 2400mm high and 4800mm wide as a pair of leaves. The gates can also made as a single leaf for sliding operation. Matched side gates for pedestrian access are also available.

Woodrite is also able to build gates to match any of its garage door styles for a complete driveway package.

“We know no one else does this, but we’re confident of the demand for a matched garage door and gate package. We’ll be adding the option of a matched gate to our garage door brochures at the next reprint” commented John Brooks, Woodrite’s CEO.

The ‘New Original’: Jaguar XKSS Makes World Debut in Los Angeles

The first genuine Jaguar XKSS to be built in almost 60 years was given its world debut presentation at the Petersen Museum, Los Angeles by Jaguar Classic on November 16th.

The stunning XKSS, finished in Sherwood Green paint, has been created by the Jaguar Classic engineering team ahead of the production of nine cars for delivery to customers across the globe in 2017.

Often referred to as the world’s first supercar, the XKSS was originally made by Jaguar as a road-going conversion of the Le Mans-winning D-type, which was built from 1954-1956. In 1957, nine cars earmarked for export to North America were lost in a fire at Jaguar’s Browns Lane factory in the British Midlands; meaning just 16 examples of XKSS were built.

Earlier this year Jaguar announced that its Classic division would build the nine ‘lost’ XKSS sports cars for a select group of established collectors and customers. The new one-off XKSS presented in Los Angeles is the summation of 18 months of research and will be used as a blueprint from which the nine continuation cars are built.

The nine cars will be completely new, with period chassis numbers from the XKSS chassis log. All cars are now sold at a price in excess of £1million each. The XKSS is the second continuation car to be created by Jaguar, following on from the six Lightweight E-types that were built in 2014. This project helped the team learn to engineer cars that are faithful to the specifications to which they were built in period, and this knowledge has been enhanced in creating the ‘new original’ XKSS.

The XKSS unveiled in Los Angeles is a period correct continuation, built using a combination of original drawings from Jaguar’s archive and modern technology. The Jaguar Classic engineering team scanned several versions of the 1957 XKSS to help build a complete digital image of the car, from the body to chassis, and including all parts required.

The body of the XKSS is made from magnesium alloy, as it was in 1957, and because the original styling bucks do not exist, Jaguar Classic produced a new, bespoke styling buck based on the original bodies from the 1950s. The bodies of the nine new cars will be formed on this buck, using a traditional process called hand-wheeling.

Jaguar Classic’s expert engineers worked with the original frames and from there produced CAD to support build of the chassis. In partnership with the Classic team, frame maker Reynolds – famous for their 531 tubing – was briefed

to craft bespoke new parts using imperial measurements, rather than metric. The frames are bronze welded in the same way as the period XKSS chassis tubing.

The continuation cars feature period specification four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes with a Plessey pump, and Dunlop tyres with riveted two-piece magnesium alloy wheels.

Under the bonnet, the XKSS is supplied with a 262hp 3.4-litre straight six-cylinder Jaguar D-type engine. The engine features completely new cast iron blocks, new cast cylinder heads and three Weber DC03 carburetors.

Inside, the ‘new original’ XKSS features perfect recreations of the original Smiths gauges. Everything from the wood of the steering wheel, to the grain of the leather seats, through to the brass knobs on the XKSS dashboard, is precisely as it would have been in 1957.

Minor specification changes have been made only to improve driver and passenger safety. The fuel cell, for example, uses robust, modern materials to support throughput of modern fuels.
Customer vehicles will be hand-built beginning this year, and it is estimated that 10,000 man hours will go into building each of the new XKSS cars.

Kev Riches, Jaguar Classic Engineering Manager, said:
“The XKSS is one of the most important cars in Jaguar’s history, and we are committed to making the ‘new original’ version absolutely faithful to the period car in every way.

“From the number, type and position of all the rivets used – there are more than 2,000 in total – to the Smiths gauges on the dashboard, everything is the same as the original cars, because that is the way it should be.”

Tim Hannig, Director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said:
“The XKSS continuation programme underlines the world-class expertise we have at Jaguar Land Rover Classic. We are committed to nurturing the passion and enthusiasm for Jaguar’s illustrious past by offering exceptional cars, services, parts and experiences.

“Jaguar Land Rover Classic is perfectly positioned to cater for this growing love for classics, with a new
£7.5m global headquarters set to open in Coventry in 2017. We are looking forward to growing this business, supporting our existing customers and engaging with a whole new generation of global enthusiasts.”

Homeless Charity chooses Intratone for London-based properties

An innovative access control system, manufactured by Intratone, one of Europe’s largest access control specialists, is helping to protect residents within properties managed by Brick By Brick, a London-based charity that provides permanent and temporary housing for people with homeless status.

The cloud-based fob-reader system, installed by Delta Security into the charity’s Old Kent Road and Queen’s Road sites, and head office, has significantly enhanced control over who has access, for how long and to which properties. Because it is cloud-based, changes made to key fobs are immediate and can be facilitated from anywhere.

Isabelle Gravenstein, General Manager, Brick By Brick, says a primary focus for installing the new system was to simplify key management, especially when granting access to contractors:

“Previously, management was required to escort all contractors onto sites, which could be very inconvenient. Now we know exactly where they are and when, and can control their access accordingly. The new system is simple to use and has made our lives as managers much easier.”

The system has also enabled the charity to police suspected tenant subletting, which is not permitted in their contracts: “It is not possible to clone these fobs, so we know there is only one per flat,” explains Isabelle. “If a tenant loses a fob, we are able to check that the fob is in fact no longer being used, as well as cancel its functionality.”

Dave Mundy, Operations Manager at Delta Security, says:

“The package includes ten years’ of data, which helps to provide cost transparency: “It means the customer does not have to take out extra data contracts, which, especially for a charity, is extremely useful in providing an upfront cost.”

Anthony Plasse, UK Sales Manager for Intratone, says the cloud-based fob reader system is ideal for multi-tenanted, managed properties:

“The system provides best-in-class security, alongside flexibility and ease of use. We are extremely pleased that the installation is serving as a good example of how access control can make life easier for managers and residents alike.”

Intratone is an entrepreneurial manufacturer with a 25-year pedigree. It was the first to launch a fob-based access control system for multi-residential premises and today more than 10 million of its fobs are in use in France, making it one of Europe’s largest players. Its innovative systems are designed specifically for the social housing/private housing market and sold through distribution and via Partner Installers.

Gingers Spark Reveals The Smallest And Safest Magnetic Lock On The Market

A new magnetic lock from Gingers Spark - the SDGi Micro Power Lock (MPL) - is offering an innovative and user-friendly solution to magnetic door locking.

The MPL is small, unobtrusive and has no sharp edges - in stark contrast to the big, bulky and sharp-edged magnetic locks that dominate the market. Not only is this aesthetically pleasing, but it’s an important safety consideration, as – in the event of incorrect installation – it can’t seriously hurt anyone if it falls off the transom.

The small size of the MPL makes it ideal for automatic doors where the space between the operators is too narrow for conventional magnetic locks, or where the armature intrudes on the safety sensor position. However, there is no compromise on strength, as the lock boasts a high holding force of 1500lbs (680kg).

Also – unlike any other mag lock on the market - it is fully adjustable from every perspective, making it very quick and simple to install.

Standard finish for the MPL is black or silver and there are several models available, so it covers a wide range of different door setups.

Mike Gillespie of Gingers Spark says:
“The SDGi Micro Power Lock is unique. It’s smaller, lighter, safer and easier to install than anything else on the market. It also has a very low current draw of .14A at 24v. Unsurprisingly, we’re dealing with a lot of interest from door installers and these locks are selling like hot cakes!”
To find out more about the SDGi Micro Power Lock, contact Mike Gillespie on 0161 483 4747, or email mike@gingersspark.co.uk  or visit www.gingersspark.co.uk .

EMKA – Taking Security to the Server Rack

EMKA BioLock – Biometric Technology at the server rack

Access security experts at EMKA point out that current data centre security practices rely on three things to ensure the protection of data.

First, keeping a thief out of the building; second, monitoring the system to detect the removal of a hard drive; finally, encrypting the data on that hard drive so that if the first two fail, the hardware is still useless to the thief.

Despite these efforts, data theft still occurs with some frequency, which is why companies need to consider a change in their strategy, such as biometric security.

EMKA believe that by implementing biometric technology at a different level of operations, such as the server rack itself, companies can optimize their security and establish a new line of defence that doesn't interrupt workflow.

Installing a fingerprint scanner on the server rack door handle won't affect building access or other factors, but ensures that only authorised personnel can actually open the rack and remove hardware. This ensures security regardless of whether a thief manages to bypass the other security measures.

Furthermore, it protects a company from theft by its own employees – one of the leading causes of data breaches seen worldwide.

Of course, as firms deploy server rack security solutions they may see other ways to improve their building access control with biometrics. By starting at a basic point of entry and deploying a high-quality biometric solution, a company can see the results and build from there, implementing biometrics where needed and avoiding a single large-scale investment that may not be cost effective immediately.

EMKA/Digitus Biometric solutions offer top of the line security for any company, but in the data centre it is particularly beneficial, providing front line protection for valuable or critical with information which is quickly becoming the currency of this digital age.

Further information on EMKA products can be found on the EMKA website - www.emka.co.uk and the latest information and news on the EMKA blog – www.emkablog.co.uk .

The True Cost of Losing Keys

Abloy UK is highlighting the need for key security, following recent revelations that HMP Northumberland Prison incurred costs of up to £1million to change the facility’s locks after a guard was reportedly taken hostage and had his keys stolen .

Security systems had to be reviewed and locks changed, at an estimated cost of more than £500,000. In addition to this, moving prisoners from cells during the “re-lock” could have taken costs up to the £1million mark.

Pip Courcoux, Sales & Product Manager CLIQ for Abloy UK, said:
“Losing keys does happen even in the most unexpected of places, and the consequences can be very expensive and a logistical nightmare as we’ve seen in the case of HMP Northumberland Prison.
“However, organisations can protect against the threat of a compromised key system and avoid such expensive replacement programmes by installing an electro-mechanical key system, such CLIQ CONNECT© from Abloy.”

CLIQ CONNECT© is the next generation of PROTEC2 CLIQ©, an easy-to-use electro-mechanical key system, based on mechanical high security disc cylinders combined with highly encrypted electronic locking and identification.

The system allows for remote key management, providing comprehensive audit trails on locks and padlocks, and the ability to electronically remove lost or stolen keys from the system, meaning security can still be confidently maintained in circumstances where a key has been misplaced.

The CLIQ CONNECT© online key uses Bluetooth 4.0 technology, enabling users to update keys wirelessly with a smartphone. The connectivity provides a real time audit trail on non-wired products such as padlocks and cam locks, and access rights can be granted to the user ‘on-site’.

Pip explains: “CLIQ CONNECT© keys can always be disabled, so although a lost key may cost £100 to replace, the actual risk is zero per cent. This is because keys are only valid at specific times – this is sometimes restricted down to as little as five minutes operation before they are rendered invalid.
“This substantially reduces risk in the system and eliminates the potential huge cost and inconvenience of replacing all locks and keys. This is true key control and the holy grail for key champions in critical infrastructure or high security sites.”

For further information on any of the products and services available from Abloy UK, please call 01902 364 500 or email marketing@abloy.co.uk

Opening the Doors to an Iconic Landmark

They call it the vertical pier: the British Airways i360 in Brighton is a jaw-dropping new landmark that combines contemporary glamour with a seaside legacy. And GEZE UK is helping open the doors for millions of visitors to head skywards for views of an incredible coastline.

The unique visitor attraction, with its slender 530ft tower and glass viewing pod offering 360-degree vistas, opened this summer. Beneath it lies the Beach Building, housing the attraction’s flexible event space, shop and restaurant.

It’s here, within a dramatic glass façade, that six pairs of sliding doors provide access to the venue, powered by GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT single operators. Their slim design and a drive unit height of just 7cm makes Slimdrive SL NT operators almost invisible in elevation, ideally complementing the aesthetic of the glazed frontage.

Designed to be virtually silent in operation, the Slimdrive SL NT provides safe and easy access in high traffic areas and was considered the perfect solution by Fill Metalbau, an Austrian specialist company tasked with developing the building envelope in steel and glass.

In defining the right doors for the Beach Building, the company had two key issues in mind: they would need to be robust and resilient. British Airways i360’s beach front location meant that they would need to battle the elements. The force of potentially strong winds made the use of swing doors impractical which meant that automatic sliding doors were the obvious choice. They also needed to be rigorous in performance with high visitor numbers expected.

Slimdrive SL NT operators have a proven track record of outstanding performance; in TUV test cycles, their endurance is measured by over one million operations. Sliding doors are also an excellent space saver and their installation into the Beach Building maintains the aesthetic of its seamless glass façade.

British Airways i360 sits at the landward end of the former Victorian West Pier. It tips a nod to its heritage: two Grade I-listed cast iron tollbooths, originally built for the West Pier, have been painstakingly rebuilt and incorporated either side of its roadside elevation, housing a tea room and the ticket office.

Accessing the dynamic new building with its anticipated high levels of footfall was a key consideration in its development. It was important to allow the various parts of the building to operate independently of each other while ensuring that visitors could comfortably navigate all that British Airways i360 has to offer.

The attraction was twelve years in the making and is the brainchild of architect-entrepreneurs David Marks and Julia Barfield of Marks Barfield Architects, best known for the design of the world-famous London Eye.

The glass pod of the British Airways i360 is ten times the size of a London Eye capsule and is capable of carrying up to 200 passengers as it slowly rises 450 feet up the slender steel tower during its flights, providing panoramic views of the Brighton and Hove coastline and across the channel.

Out to sea, stand the skeletal remains of the West Pier, now a feature of Brighton’s seafront with a desolate beauty of what once was.

British Airways i360 chairman and director of Marks Barfield Architects, David Marks said:
He has dubbed the new attraction a “modern day, vertical pier” which offers visitors the opportunity to “walk on air” just as West Pier invited Victorian society to “walk on water”.
He also added: “It was essential for us to have the right doors to provide access to the venue: silent in operation with and a slim design, as well as robust and resilient, and most importantly designed to fit with the aesthetic of the Beach Building and its glass façade”.

Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK, said:
He was delighted that GEZE’s products had been used in such a prestigious development.
“This is a quality development constructed from materials and technology from across the globe. It is set to become one of Britain’s iconic landmarks and we are thrilled that millions of visitors will be passing through our doors on their way to enjoy a breathtaking experience.”

The British Airways i360 is the world’s tallest moving observation tower, the world's first vertical cable car and holds the Guinness World Record for the world's most slender tower.

Feel the Force as Formula 1 Powers back into London

One of the most dramatic decades in Formula 1 history – the 1990s, when giants of the sport such as Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher fought for championship honours – will be celebrated at Historic Motorsport International (HMI), the brand new show dedicated to historic motorsport in all its forms.

A number of machines of the era, cars now owned and still raced by members of the FORCE organisation will be on display as HMI kicks off the 2017 historic motorsport season. To add to the atmosphere, the cars will be presented in a recreation of a typical F1 pit of the period.

HMI will be held at ExCeL London from 23-26 February and is aimed at anyone with an interest in classic racing and rallying – including competitors, enthusiasts, preparation experts and officials. The show will be rubbing shoulders with the hugely popular London Classic Car Show, now in its third year at ExCeL. Uniquely, a ticket to one show provides free entry to the other.

David McLaughlin, founder of FORCE, said:
“The huge crowds seen at leading classic motor race events such as the Silverstone Classic show just how popular this branch of our sport has become.
“This is reflected in the welcome arrival of Historic Motorsport International… and it’s a masterstroke to link it to the London Classic Car Show which has proven to be very successful at attracting large numbers of the right people to ExCeL.”

FORCE joins a growing number of organisations active in historic motorsport that will be exhibiting at HMI. These include Motor Racing Legends and the Classic Sports Car Club while the Historic Sport Car Club (HSCC) will be celebrating 50 years of Formula Ford.

Other specialists already signed up for the show include Dunlop Motorsport, Cosworth, Taylor & Crawley and Duncan Hamilton & Co. In total there will be more than 100 competition cars offered for sale at the show.

A central feature at HMI will be the inaugural Historic Motorsport Conference Programme. Hosted by broadcaster and journalist Henry Hope-Frost on both Thursday and Friday, the public forum will examine a wide variety of controversial topics including the use of modern technology in classic race and rally cars, driving standards and sponsorship.

Held at ExCeL London, on 23-26 February, with access to both shows included in the entry price. Historic Motorsport International will open its doors at 10am on Thursday 23 February, while the London Classic Car Show will burst into life at 3pm that afternoon.

Tickets to Historic Motorsport International 2017 are now available from the show website – historicmotorsportinternational.co.uk – and start at £24 for single adult entry (£27 on the door on the day).

Intratone launches new App putting the ‘control’ into access control

Intratone, one of Europe’s largest access control specialists, has launched a new App that allows users to control access to their property from anywhere in the world through their smartphone, tablet or mobile device.

Ideally suited to Housing Associations, Social Housing projects and wider ‘care’ environments, and used in conjunction with Intratone’s existing door entry systems, the 4G-based Video Mobile App enables residents not only to ‘see’ who is at their door but also grant access to legitimate visitors such as friends, family and essential care workers.

The App is simple to use: the visitor’s image appears directly on the mobile giving the user the option of opening the door directly, speaking to the visitor to confirm their identity and purpose for the call, or hanging up.

Anthony Plasse, UK Sales Manager for Intratone, says that the App is already being well received:
“Response to the App so far has been encouraging, especially for smaller systems where the technology adds a further level of flexibility and control.
“As opposed to traditional ‘fixed’ door entry systems, the App can be carried with you and is therefore especially useful for the elderly or less agile who now don’t even have to move to see who is at the door. It also ensures that essential visits won’t be missed.”

Intratone manufactures a range of cost-effective door-entry and access control solutions designed around the customer need. Its systems are installed across a range of Housing Association, Social Housing and Private Properties throughout the UK and Europe.
