Hörmann UK opens the gate to greater durability for Highways England

Authorised Hörmann UK supplier, Livewire Gates, has significantly reduced costs while simultaneously increasing efficiency for Highways England at its Northern depots through the installation of Hörmann UK’s HS200 and HS280 steel sliding industrial gates.

Since 2016, Livewire Gates has been an official partner of Hörmann UK, supplying its sliding industrial gates to a range of high profile companies across the country throughout the logistics, pharmaceuticals and public sector, including Highways England.

Due to Highways England’s depots being located just off the nation’s busiest motorways, the high salt content and harsh elements of the open landscape, combined with the heavy winds caused by the constant flow of fast traffic, caused existing gates to quickly corrode. This required frequent and costly replacements by Highways England to ensure the security of the government vehicles and materials were never compromised.

After searching for a supplier that could provide a durable, resilient and highly secure solution that would easily withstand the weather conditions and heavy useage, Highways England commissioned Livewire gates to install Hörmann UK’s HS200 and HS280 steel sliding industrial gates.

Featuring a self-supporting structure and durable steel frame that easily handles high usage, the HS200 and HS280 models were installed throughout Highways England’s northern depots located in Kendal, Workington, Shap and Preston.

Mark Corner, a Director at Livewire Gates, said:
“We specified Hörmann UK’s HS200 and HS280 steel sliding industrial gates for Highways England back in 2016 and they are still delivering the same level of performance three years later. The motorway depots are all located in rural locations around Cumbria, where harsh weather conditions can prove to be troublesome.
“Through our partnership with Hörmann UK we have been able to provide the client with solutions that can withstand these climates with ease, particularly with regard to resisting corrosion. The HS200 and HS280 are superior products within the industry as they are easy to install and require minimal maintenance, which is essential for this client as they need to be operational at all times to ensure the nation’s motorways and major A roads are running as they should be.
“In terms of installation, Hörmann UK delivered the gates with a template, so our team simply had to lift the gate into place once it was delivered. This enabled us to minimise any potential disruption to the operations of the depots, whilst also ensuring security of the site was never compromised.
“Our customers select Hörmann UK’s products as they are confident they will offer the greatest standards in longevity and durability. This is supported by the fact that in the three years we have been supplying Hörmann UK’s industrial sliding gates, we have not experienced a single fault. We also know that in the unlikely event of downtime, Hörmann UK’s service team will get our customers back up and running as soon as possible.”

The HS200 steel sliding gate is available with a bottom beam height of 200mm, clear passage width up to 10,000 mm and operator power of 0.37kW. The HS280 offers a larger profile with a bottom beam height of 280mm, a clear passage width up to 12000mm and operator power of 0.75kw. Both styles offer customers a breadth of designs, styles and sizes, tailored to the needs of their individual operations.

The fully welded HS200 and HS280 steel sliding gates are available in varying sizes, with the addition of flashing warning lights and brakes available for emergency operation, improving safety standards for sites that are in frequent use.

As standard, the industrial gates include five self-monitoring closing edge safety devices, which stop the gate instantly to ensure the safest possible working environment for drivers and on site staff where the gates are in frequent use. Adding to the safety features of the HS200 and HS280, Hörmann UK includes an electronic control system, which features a radio control and automatic timed opening and closing.

Hörmann UK’s industrial sliding gates also include aluminium guide rollers, which are attached on the top edge of the gate leaf. The design means that there is no direct contact between the track rollers and the gate coating, which helps to preserve the aesthetic appeal of the gates.

Industrial Service Manager at Hörmann UK, Phillip Clark added:
“We have recently doubled our servicing team so that we are able to minimise downtime and any other inconveniences that arise from irregular servicing and maintenance. We are dedicated to providing Livewire with the highest service level and look forward to helping them meet their customer’s individual needs for years to come, including Highways England.”

Jack Barclay Bentley Hosts James Bond Exhibition; Including Two of the First Bond Cars

For a week this June, the famous ‘JB’-emblazoned doors of Jack Barclay Bentley in Mayfair – the world’s oldest Bentley showroom – will come to represent another ‘JB’; the world’s most famous secret agent, James Bond.

From 11th-16th June, Jack Barclay Bentley will be hosting a free exhibition of James Bond rarities, including original Bond cars, in partnership with Peter Harrington Rare Books.

In amongst the precious artefacts, visitors will be able to see key moments from the genesis of the James Bond story, including a first edition, first impression Casino Royale book – the first ever appearance of James Bond – signed by Ian Fleming himself.

Valued at £135,000, this magnificent presentation copy is inscribed by Fleming to the employer who gave him the means to write - James Gomer Berry, 1st Viscount Kemsley - and his second wife, Edith: "To Gomer and Edith, wishing them both always a nine when it is needed, and in memory of ten happy years of playing with and against them across the green baize. From Ian."

From some of Fleming’s earliest work on Bond to arguably his last, Peter Harrington Rare Books will be supplying a corrected typescript of ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’, used as the setting copy for Fleming's last Bond novel. Fleming's text was sent to the typists in batches between 15 April and 16 June, and three sub-edited typescripts were completed by 24 June.

This is one of those copies, presumably that which was sent to Fleming on 25 June and which, with Fleming's light revisions, was then sent to William Plomer at Cape on 1 July. Fleming was not satisfied with the text and planned to revise it in Jamaica the following year so he did not wish the typescript to be circulated within the wider editorial team.

Fleming's health, which had been poor for some time however, was in rapid decline and he died on 12 August. This typescript therefore almost certainly contains Fleming's last ever work on James Bond, and is valued at £175,000.

Pom Harrington, Owner of Peter Harrington Rare Books, said:
"Bond has been at the forefront of book collecting concerns for decades now, and a large part of that fascination stems from quite how intriguing a man Fleming was in his own right.
"A lot of the character and quirk that Bond is known for in the novels relates directly to the author himself, and it's impossible to ignore comparisons between the two, not only in the way he thought of himself, the world and the people in it, but in his pursuits and preferred luxuries.
"Bentley is a prime example of the latter, and we're delighted to be collaborating with Jack Barclay Bentley for this exhibition."

And the venue –  Jack Barclay Bentley in Mayfair – is even more fitting than you might think; the very first James Bond cars – from the Ian Fleming-penned novels – were Bentleys. In among the precious books and manuscripts, you’ll find examples of the first two Bond cars; a Bentley 4.5-litre Blower and a Mark VI.

Fleming revealed in interviews that he had put Bond in a Blower because he liked him to ‘use dashing, interesting things. ‘Although his choice was also no doubt in tribute to Fleming’s friend, Amherst Villiers, who helped to develop parts of the design of the 4.5-litre ‘Blower’.

Bond drives the ‘Blower’ for the entirety of the first book, Casino Royale, but writes it off while chasing Drax in the second book, Moonraker. Bond quickly replaces it with a Bentley Mk VI, an example of which will also be on display at Jack Barclay.

Jack Barclay Bentley has a unique connection to the Bentley brand, with its namesake considered as one of the original ‘Bentley Boys’. In fact, Jack Barclay himself drove a Bentley 4.5-litre to victory in the 1929 Brooklands 500, setting an average speed of more than 107mph.

The showroom retains many of its original features, including the iconic chequered floor, wood-panelling and art deco signage.

Single and Dual Loop Detector for Reliable and Fail Safe Vehicle Detection

Carlo Gavazzi’s latest LDP series of loop detectors provide reliable and accurate vehicle detection and is designed specifically to ensure ease of installation.

The automatic frequency tuning ensures that each time it is powered up or reset it will automatically detect disturbances present on any of the four channels and in turn will choose the channel with the best signal condition whilst the selectable sensitivity allows adjustments in 10 steps from 1 to 10. 1 being the least sensitive and 10 the most sensitive.

The Automatic Sensitivity Boost (ASB) ensures accurate detection of high-base vehicles such as trucks and buses whilst the automatic loop frequency tuning avoids cross talk between loops when installed in close proximity to each other.

Crucially, the built-in fail safe / fail secure function; on detection of an error such as power loss or loop fault allows the loop detector to operate either to open or close the barriers safely.

The multicolour power/fault LED feature ensures simple diagnostics and ensures rapid troubleshooting; providing an effective method for monitoring the loop status, cross talk, short circuit, open circuit and inductance out of range.

The new LD series comes with two SPDT relay outputs that can be independently configured to operate in pulse or presence mode, with adjustable pulse and presence detection. The dual loop version can also determine vehicle direction.

A wide power supply range from 24 to 240 VAC/VDC, together with many other features, contributes to make the new loop detector the state-of-the-art solution for reliable universal vehicle detection.

The LDP loop detector is the perfect solution for applications such as car parks, drive through and car access control applications to control barriers, gates, bollards and car access equipment and is designed in accordance with the latest standards and European and North American regulations and is CE, UL508 and CSA certified.

More than 3,000 homeowners really rate Certass Installers

Expert certification body, Certass, has received outstanding feedback for members with its new online rating system. Since launching in November, there have been more than 3000 reviews, and the rate is increasing by the minute.

Designed to bring even more digital support to Certass members, the free ‘Rate Your Installer’ service provides consumers the chance to leave honest reviews about Certass members online.

The system acts as a platform where members can receive genuine feedback from their customers on the work that they have completed. Thousands of homeowners visit the Certass website searching for information on installers or leaving reviews.

Jason Clemmit, Managing Director at Certass says:

“Our online rating system is proving really popular amongst homeowners. Within hours of its launch, we had dozens of ratings from consumers who were leaving such positive feedback about our members.
“There are lots of popular online rating websites that allow anyone to leave feedback, which can often lead to unfair reviews. The Certass ‘Rate Your Installer’ service only permits reviews on jobs which have been finished and registered with Certass.”

All Certass members can add a company bio and have the option to opt-in to the free online rating system. Members are scored by their customers on a range of attributes, including their service, tidiness, reliability & timekeeping, workmanship standards and product suitability. Consumers can leave any additional comments too, which are great for members to use on their own website, social media profiles and marketing resources.

Jason adds: “It’s a valuable, free way for installers to show consumers what a great job that they do. The service builds on our free digital support package for members which helps them to build a professional online presence.”

Acoustic Doors – The Key to Hotel Peace

Noise from inside the hotel – particularly from the corridor - is one of the most common causes of complaint from hotel guests, leading to tired and unhappy customers who will never return, negative reviews, and potential loss of income.

But it is possible to fight these negative hotel complaints is by preparing for them and properly soundproofing hotel doors with effective acoustic seals.

While the structure of sound attenuating doors is clearly vital, many are let down by the seals selected. Sound, unlike air passage can and will escape from the tiniest gaps: a door open (or with a gap of) 1% will let 50% sound through it and most soundproofing issues or noise leakage problems are down to either a lack of the correct acoustic doors seal, or badly-fitted or damaged door seals which have gone unnoticed.

Ordinary fin or brush seals simply will not do the job of blocking sound from passing through the gaps around the door so Norseal supplies a range of acoustic seals solutions including its feature-packed Complete Sealing System which provides smoke and draft protection as well as acoustic insulation around the full perimeter of most hotel doors.

The Norseal NOR810 Automatic Drop Seal is fitted to the bottom of the door providing the most durable acoustic sealing profile to stand up to the wear and tear that hotel doors receive. It effectively provides smoke and draft protection and, uniquely, also offers sound reduction of 55dBRw.

It is self-levelling so it will cope with any kind of floor or frame combination and no tools are needed to adjust or deactivate the seal. The seal also complies with the requirements of British Standard BS476: Part 22 and has a wealth of acoustic data as evidence of its competent sound attenuation properties.

Norseal also supplies a full range of acoustic perimeter seals that filling the air gaps that create sound leaks around the head and jambs of the doorset. They also stop smoke, light and dust permeating the gap. Norseal can provide either retro-fit or rout-in acoustic perimeter seals to suit any hotel door.

Part of the European Athmer Group, Norseal is the leading provider of specialist door seal solutions, plus a wide range of ancillary door products. The company has a long track record of innovation, developing products which meet and exceed the latest industry standards for fire and smoke protection, acoustic properties, accessibility and thermal insulation.

Products are backed by a qualified and experienced technical team offering advice and guidance on all aspects of intumescent and acoustic seals. As well as its core range of seals, Norseal supply a wide range of supplementary door products including fire-rated glazing, electrical and plumbing solutions, fire rated ventilation, letter plates, door viewers, threshold plates, weather seals, and finger protection products.

Henderson Industrial Sliding Door Hardware Specified for Unique Boathouse Project

London based architectural practice, Wimshurst Pelleriti, has recently specified P C Henderson’s Straight Sliding 301 industrial door hardware for a unique Boathouse project on the River Yealm in Devon.

The architecture practice was provided with a challenging brief to design a boathouse which could be sensitively built into the steep sided estuary of the river. The new structure would be small in size but used to store a wealth of waterside equipment and water craft, including a 14 foot speedboat.

The result was an innovative and sophisticated infrastructure built with galvanized steel and untreated Siberian larch to reflect the woodland setting. To meet the design requirements for optimum storage, using minimal space, a series of sliding doors were installed on the ground level of the boathouse to enable easy access from both the surrounding land and water. P C Henderson’s Straight Sliding 301 was identified as the best system for the project.

Will Wimshurst, Director at Wimshurst Pelleriti commented:
“Our aim was to not only design a solution which was innovative and aesthetically pleasing but one which could also deliver considerable social benefits to our client. By incorporating seven different sliding door systems throughout the boathouse, we were able to maximise both internal and external space whilst also ensuring easy access to the quayside and slipway”.
The project also benefited from a number of other design elements including a hoist so that the heavy yet delicate speedboat could be stored 10ft high in the eaves and easily lowered into the water when required.
“The doors on some of the systems were extremely heavy so it was important that the specified hardware could cater for the additional weight. Due to the surrounding marine environment, it was also important that the material used was highly corrosive resistant without affecting performance”, continued Will.

Straight Sliding makes up part of P C Henderson’s industrial range of sliding door hardware. The robust system caters for anything from light commercial doors right up to heavy industrial doors weighing up to 2000kg.

Ian Sproat, Technical Development Manager at P C Henderson commented:
“Straight Sliding is able to be specified as individual components for varying weights and environments – making it one of our most versatile systems. The boathouse project is a great example of what can be achieved with this system”.

Garador gives Cyclists an Easy Ride

Hundreds of fund raising cyclists have been successfully returned to their departure point thanks to the efforts of Somerset garage door manufacturer Garador.

Over 550 cyclists left Watchet in North Somerset to ride 54 miles to the South coast, raising money for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. They then needed to get back to the north coast to pick up their transport and get home.

Garador, with its large capacity trucks and efficient distribution system, was happy to give a hand.

Leading garage door maker Garador
organised an efficient transport system
to reunite hundreds of riders
with their cars 50 miles away.
It provided huge trucks and drivers for transportation, using their unique trailer and pole system so that the bikes could easily be wheeled into the trailers and firmly secured for the journey.

“We were more than happy to assist,” said Garador’s Managing Director Neil Discombe.

“The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance plays a vital role in society and it is wonderful that so many cyclists were willing to tackle the challenging route to raise thousands of pounds money for this worthwhile cause.”
