Limited-Edition, Track-Only Ford GT Mk II the Next Level of Ford GT Supercar Performance

Ford and Multimatic revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed the Ford GT Mk II, a limited-edition, track-only GT that represents the next stage in Ford GT performance.

With a 700 horsepower 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, race-proven aerodynamics and competition-oriented handling, the GT Mk II has been co-developed by Ford Performance and Multimatic based on competitive learnings from Ford’s successful FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaigns with the Ford GT race car – yet GT Mk II is engineered independent of race series rules, regulations and limitations.

“The GT Mk II unleashes the full performance potential of the Ford GT without any artificial performance limitations dictated by racing sanctioning bodies,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer. “It’s the closest GT owners can get to the Le Mans-winning performance and exhilarating feeling of crossing the finish line in the Ford GT race car.”

Limited to just 45 vehicles, with a starting MSRP of $1.2 million, the GT Mk II joins the GT race car that won the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Ford GT supercar.

“The true off-the-hook performance capability of the GT hasn’t yet been fully showcased,” said Multimatic’s chief technical officer, Larry Holt. “The road car is obviously limited by the many global homologation requirements that it must comply with, and the race car suffers from the restriction of the dreaded Balance of Performance, resulting in it being 150 horsepower down to the road car. The Mk II answers the regularly asked question of how would the car perform with all the limitations lifted: the answer is spectacularly.”

Built in Markham, Ontario, the Mk II begins life at the main Ford GT plant before being transferred to a specialist facility at Multimatic Motorsports where it is crafted into the Ford GT Mk II.

The best of both worlds

The Ford GT Mk II is focused around aerodynamic and engine improvements and shares key features with both the street-legal GT supercar as well as the GT race car. Many of its components have been track-proven in the world’s most challenging endurance racing events.

The large dual-element rear wing exceeds what the Ford GT race car offers in terms of downforce. An all-new front racing splitter and diffuser have been incorporated along with new fender louvres and dive planes, which help balance out the extra rear downforce.

These aggressive aerodynamic changes enable the GT Mk II to generate over 400 per cent more downforce than the Ford GT while fixed aerodynamic elements along with its race-proven suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport racing tyres enable the car to pull more than 2 g of lateral grip.

GT Mk II is also lighter and more agile. The street car’s adjustable ride height and drive modes have been removed, providing a weight savings of over 90 kg while 5-way adjustable DSSV shock absorbers work with a lowered and fixed ride height to improve handling and keep the Mk II as aerodynamically efficient as possible.

The Ford GT Mk II features the 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine that powers both the Ford GT race car and the road car but since the Mk II is not limited by any racing sanctioning body it is able to generate 200 horsepower more than the race car, making the Mk II the most powerful version of the Ford GT. The 3.5-litre EcoBoost is paired with the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission from the Ford GT but specially calibrated for this track-exclusive application.

To add stamina to power, the GT Mk II adds innovative engine cooling technology, including a high capacity air-to-air outboard mounted charge air cooler with water spray technology. The water spray automatically activates in high temperature situations to provide cooling by applying atomised water on the charge air cooler allowing the Ford GT Mk II to maintain a consistent level of power at high temperatures.

A roof-mounted intake reminiscent of the race car engine air intake has been added for the Mk II to feed auxiliary engine, clutch and transmission coolers, giving the Mk II optimal cooling for the most extreme track day duty.

Increased engine power is paired with improved stopping power. The Mk II features braking performance beyond that of the GT race car by utilising the street car’s carbon ceramic brakes, including 15.5-inch front and 14.1-inch rear Brembo brakes. Unique forged aluminium 19-inch wheels cover the massive brakes with race-proven Michelin Pilot Sport GT tyres.

The front fascia and hood of the Mk II are similar to the street car as well as the stylised Ford GT headlamps with signature running lights.

Interior changes include a bespoke Sparco racing seat with a six-point racing harness and an optional passenger seat. A full MoTeC data acquisition system has also added to provide vital information for a track racer, which also doubles as a display for the rear camera.

Latest GT family member

The Ford GT production car, which made its first Goodwood appearance in 2017, is the most advanced and exclusive Ford road car ever, limited to volumes of no more than 250 a year, globally.

Built for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, the Ford GT race car has been a great success for Ford, winning the GTE Pro class at Le Mans on its first attempt in 2016, exactly 50 years on from the first of four successive Le Mans victories for the Ford GT40 at Le Mans.

Ford ended its competitive GT racing program in the FIA World Endurance Championship at the 2019 Le Mans in the GTE Pro class. The Ford GTs will continue to race through the remainder of the IMSA season, which culminates at Road Atlanta in October.

The GT Mk II makes its public debut running in the Supercar class at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and will be sold directly to customers by Multimatic. Customers interested in purchasing a Mk II are invited to contact Multimatic via FordGTMkII.com.

Making the grade: the difference between grade 4 and 5 of BS 8607

UNION CodeGUARD 5 is the first access control device
available to meet the new BS 8607 grade 5 standards.

Craig Birch, Product Category Manager at UNION, outlines what the new grade 5 for BS 8607 includes, why it has been introduced and the benefits that it can help deliver.

At present, mechanically operated push button locksets are not typically security products, but rather access control ones. For example, think about the last time you went to your local doctor’s surgery. No doubt there will have been a lock on the door behind the receptionist, protecting the sensitive information they hold – a demand that has become only more critical with the introduction of the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

However, the truth is that the lock protecting the restricted area in question is probably little more than a tubular latch. Essentially, it’s not a security device, but rather one that is used for convenience to simply meet the access control needs of a site.

However, BS 8607 – a standard for mechanically operated push button locksets – offers a series of grades that these locks can meet for strength and robustness. Introduced only recently, grade 5 is the newest and most stringent level for delivering assured security and access control. But what does it offer that grade 4 does not?

What is BS 8607?
The British Standards Institution (BSI) states that BS 8607:2014 specifies the requirements and test methods for durability, strength and function for mechanically operated push button locksets and their locking plates for use on doors, windows doors and entrance doors in buildings.

Both grade 4 and grade 5 of BS 8607 stipulate that products meeting these standards must be suitable for ‘applications where security, abuse and usage levels are expected to be equivalent to BS 3621’, which relates to thief-resistant locks.

But if the security, abuse and usage levels are the same, what then is the difference between the two grades?

What is the difference between grade 4 and 5?
Put simply, those rated as grade 4 can only achieve this standard with the help of an integral additional locking unit. So, with a grade 4 product, users must lock and unlock the solution from the inside with a key, and then operate the push button from the outside to unlock a door.

In contrast, a mechanically operated push button lockset that meets grade 5 standards provides a ‘one-stop’ security and access control solution; one that does not require a separate locking unit. In short, with a grade 5 product the latch and lock are integrated and tested together, without the need for an additional key. The result is a solution that offers keyless egress. This means that, when it shuts, a grade 5 solution automatically locks. Then, should you need to exit a room, it’s simply a one handle operation to unlock the door.

While it’s intended that both grade 4 and 5 devices offer the same resistance to attack and it’s simply the way it is locked that is different, the fact that a user has to physically lock a door themselves with a grade 4 product means the technology is reliant on key holders to secure the premises themselves. Ultimately, users have to take responsibility and ownership for the security of a site. But with a grade 5 solution, security is assured as the door will lock automatically.

Why has grade 5 been introduced?
Essentially, grade 5 has been introduced because it provides a BSI Kitemark approved certification.  This means any mechanically operated push button locksets advertised as meeting grade 5 standards will be fully tested and inspected to this certification, offering complete peace of mind to users, installers and specifiers.

As a result, there is no question that a grade 5 product will meet the security and access control needs that so many commercial environments demand. A grade 4 product is reliant on an additional locking unit that meets BS 3621 being used too, whereas a grade 5 solution delivers assured protection and access control in a single package. Finally, the BSI Kitemark for a grade 5 solution is an official stamp of approval for the quality of the service offered.

To date, it is this combination of security and convenience that has not yet been seen in mechanically operated push button devices. Grade 5 of BS 8607 looks set to change all that.

UNION has just launched CodeGUARD 5, the first access control device available to meet the new BS 8607 grade 5 standards.

West Port’s fastener focus helps deliver assured fire door performance

Rapierstar’s specialist technical support has played a key role in helping West Port to achieve high performing fire rated door-sets, by eliminating the risk of failure during testing as a result of the incorrect choice and application of fasteners.

Rapierstar, which is the UK’s market-leading supplier of window and door fasteners, is recommending that fire door manufacturers follow West Port’s lead and not overlook the major role that these smallest of components play in a door-set’s structural integrity, durability and long term quality. West Port door-sets offer outstanding performance in either 30-minute or 60-minute options, providing installers with a trusted fire protection solution.

Andy Tyas, Operations Director at West Port says:
“From the outset we wanted to create fire doors that offer performance that far exceeds the ratings they are awarded, demonstrated by our 30 minute fire doors actually achieving 42 minutes in testing. Our 60 minute fire door is another really important development which, like our FD30 option, is built using only technically superior components.”
Rapierstar, whose collective technical expertise in fastener design, manufacture and application totals more than 100 years, has provided West Port with detailed guidance on which fasteners to use throughout the door-set’s construction in order to achieve the 30 and 60 minute fire ratings. In addition to input at the design stage, this includes training to ensure fabricators use fasteners correctly, and regular auditing of the factory to maintain consistency in the quality and promised protection level in finished door-sets.

Paul Balfe, Technical Consultant at Rapierstar, says:
“Any door is only as good as its weakest components, and all too often that turns out to be the fasteners as a result of choosing the wrong type of screws for the application or sourcing poor quality screws. With fire doors, it goes without saying that weak points simply must not exist, given that their role is to protect lives and assets. That’s why it’s vitally important that fastener choice is given the same attention and scrutiny as the glass type, the insulating qualities of the door slab, the intumescent seals, etc.
“A fire rated door-set is tested as a complete system, so there is absolutely no scope to substitute the components at a later stage, no matter how small. We can help eliminate the risk of fasteners being substituted through a process of regular reviews and monitoring to provide assurance to end-customers.”
To find out more about how Rapierstar fasteners can provide a reliable solution in fire rated door-sets, please call 01260 223311 or visit www.rapierstar.com.

Survey reveals high job satisfaction amongst UK tradespeople

Almost three quarters of tradespeople in the UK are happy in their work, despite working long hours and regular weekends, according to a new survey carried out by the country’s largest online supplier of ironmongery, IronmongeryDirect.

The poll, completed by over 950 tradespeople, saw 72% of respondents rate themselves as ‘happy’ or ‘very happy’ in their current role, with 70% saying they would recommend their job to others. This was despite almost half (46%) of those surveyed working over 45 hours every week, 54% regularly working weekends and almost a third (29%) taking less than two weeks holiday a year.

The findings are in contrast to the overall decline in job satisfaction across the UK, highlighted by a recent survey* which found that workplace happiness has dropped steadily over the past three years, with only 41% of staff reporting being happy most of the time at work.

Commenting on the survey findings, Wayne Lysaght-Mason, Managing Director of IronmongeryDirect, said:
“For too long academic professions have been portrayed as the aspirational career routes to pursue while occupations in the trade sector are viewed as second class. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
“There are a huge number of benefits for those taking up a trade and the results from our survey show just how fulfilling and rewarding a career on the tools can be. With acute skills shortages felt across the whole construction sector, it is the perfect time for young people to pursue a trade career and join this flourishing industry.”

Skills shortages (reported by 64% of respondents), which are compounded by record employment levels, mean a trade career is likely to offer long-term job security. With 10% of the UK construction workforce made up of overseas workers**, the issue could be even further exacerbated if immigration is restricted under the terms of Brexit.

Furthermore, 22% of current tradespeople are aged over 50 while 15% are in their 60s, so new talent is urgently needed to replace those nearing retirement.

Trade skills can lead to lucrative careers, with half of the survey respondents earning £30k or more. There are also good prospects for self-employment, which offers added flexibility, control and the option to be selective when taking on work. This is reflected in the survey, with 78% of self-employed tradespeople rating themselves as ‘happy’ or ‘very happy’ at work.

IronmongeryDirect has over 17,000 products available and in stock. Orders can be placed as late as 8pm for next day delivery from Sunday through to Friday and by 4pm on Saturdays. Free, no quibble returns are available on all products.

For more information, visit IronmongeryDirect.com or call their team of specialist advisors on 0800 168 28 28.

Gerry Judah, the Artist behind the Goodwood Festival of Speed Central Feature shares his story ahead of the Festival opening

Almost nobody among the 200,000-plus visitors to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will leave without an image of the iconic Central Feature in their memory cards or mobile phones.

In the course of 21 years, these dramatic works of art on the lawn of Goodwood House have trumpeted the arrival of the greatest live action festival of motoring in the world – and all of them have been created by one man.

Gerry Judah is the artist who uses up to 150 tonnes of steel, has spent months of preparation and sketched many designs, working with various engineers in order to create each of the pieces that have graced the Festival of Speed since 1997. That first Central Feature was a tribute to Ferrari, and has been followed by displays honouring the likes of Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and even the life of Bernie Ecclestone.

This year’s Central Feature is one that is sure to resonate with British motoring enthusiasts, as for the first time Aston Martin will be in pride of place over the Hill.

"It's absolutely wonderful that Aston Martin will star for the first time on the Central Feature at this year's Festival of Speed, presented by Mastercard,” commented the Duke of Richmond.
“Seventy years ago, Aston Martin first raced at Goodwood and, 10 years later, our histories were forever linked when it sealed the 1959 World Sportscar Championship here at Goodwood Motor Circuit in September of that year. It was also in 1959 that Aston Martin launched its works at Newport Pagnell – so 2019 is a perfect time for us to celebrate Aston Martin's past, present and future success."

Gerry Judah’s professional relationship with the Duke of Richmond began when the Duke worked as one of the top commercial photographers in the UK and Judah was a set designer. When the idea occurred of creating a focal point for the burgeoning Festival of Speed, the Duke then turned to his collaborator to turn the idea into a towering metal reality.
Judah says: “The process can take anywhere between four to nine months. It all depends on how soon the featured marque gets involved. I will then sit down with the company to get an idea of what they want to express, their spirit and vision.”
Thanks to his own trained eye and deep personal involvement in every aspect of the event, the Duke of Richmond is very active in the process of evolving each design.
“There is definitely a form of collaboration with His Grace. Because of our history, there's a lot of dialogue as we both know where we want the Central Feature to go.”
Often, the Central Features appear to defy physics – such as the 52-metre Porsche sculpture in 2018, which rose from a steel spine just 12 centimetres in diameter. Yet as Judah points out, physics cannot be cheated despite all appearances to the contrary.
“Every Central Feature is built by closely working with engineers and fabricators,” He said. “It’s vital to collaborate on a project this size this to ensure the Central Features are structurally sound and can withstand the elements for several days.”
The Central Features are also constructed using innovative techniques. The 2015 Lotus Central Feature was built by welding 6mm flat metal sheets together.
“The way we cut and welded the sheets together created a stiff monocoque. The shape and skin of the Central Feature became its structure,” Judah explains.
The 3D infinity loop design was made up of 11 sections, transported by articulated lorries and a police escort.

With 21 Central Features to his name, it’s difficult to pick a favourite, but for Judah it is the 2011 Jaguar E-Type Central Feature, celebrating 50 years of the E-Type:
“It was just a very holistic design.” Made up of 150 tonnes of painted 12mm steel, the Feature rose to the height of 28 metres. The metal, previously used in gas pipes, was donated by JLR owner Tata Steel, with the entire sculpture taking months to install.
The 50 Years of E-Type remains the only Central Feature that has not been recycled. “Jaguar are planning to re-site it in front of their factory,” Judah says.
Although the cars are the stars in every sense at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Judah is pleased to have given context to the Central Feature through his work. Rather than concentrating on the type or make of the cars that he is representing, he has always sought to convey what the subject means in a much broader sense.
“They represent dynamics, speed, engineering and celebration – everything the Festival stands for," he said.
This year’s Central Feature will be unveiled to the public on the opening day of the Festival, 4 July.

Hospitality packages are available throughout the weekend. Four-day and Saturday tickets are now sold out. A limited number ot tickets for Thursday 4th, Friday 5th and Sunday 7th July remain available from www.goodwood.com or call the Goodwood Ticket Office on 01243 755 055.

DHF launches Best Practice Guide for Key Copy Protection

DHF has announced the launch of its Best Practice Guide entitled: How to obtain Key Copy Protection: security and protection advice regarding copying of keys which offers information on minimising the risk of a security breach by preventing the unauthorised copying of keys.

To copy a key, it is necessary to obtain a suitable key “blank” onto which the individual key code can be copied.  Many generic key blanks are readily available to UK locksmiths and key cutters, making obtaining key copies convenient, but a risk to security.

For some installations, that risk is unacceptable, and there is a need to prevent the unauthorised copying of keys.  An effective way of achieving this is where the lock manufacturer restricts the availability of suitable key blanks.  This, of course, is only possible if the lock manufacturer can prevent anyone else supplying the blanks without his or her permission.

The objective of DHF’s Best Practice Guide is to clarify this complicated area of law to enable claims about security and protection against unauthorised copying to be appropriately evaluated.

DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry explains:
“There is a definite misunderstanding in the marketplace about the most effective way to provide protection for a key.
“It is important to understand that this level of key control cannot be offered through key copyright, or design registration and, in fact, the most effective way manufacturers can restrict the availability of key blanks is by using a lock and key mechanism that is patented (cylinder and lock together).
“DHF’s new Best Practice Guide offers concise and comprehensive direction on how to achieve key copy protection, concludes Bob”.
Ultimately, it is the manufacturer who must have control and the ability to restrict the distribution of key blanks to ensure that the possibility of a security breach is properly managed.

Excellence in Ironmongery showcased in GAI Yearbook

A new publication containing the latest door hardware advice for architects and specifiers and showcasing best practice internationally has been launched by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI).

The GAI Yearbook contains architectural ironmongery and technical standards advice and has been created to recognise the importance of the professional partnership between architects and architectural ironmongers.

There is guidance for sourcing door and window hardware professionals, including a list of all Registered Architectural Ironmongers (RegAI) who can help put together a compliant and robust hardware schedule.

Angie Corkhill, director of the GAI, says:
“When it comes to architectural ironmongery, even the smallest error can impact the performance of the door, the fire integrity and flow of the building. It’s a complex industry and a hard subject to master, so we hope that this publication will encourage architects to use a RegAI on all future projects.”

RegAIs are fully qualified architectural ironmongery professionals who have completed their GAI Diploma and have committed to maintaining a high level of knowledge, keeping fully up-to-date with the latest legislation, industry standards and products through the GAI’s CPD programme.

Within the Yearbook, Jonathan Hall, director of architectural practice AHMM, has given an exclusive interview talking about AHMM’s projects and award wins, architectural ironmongery and the specification process.

Jonathan also was also a judge for this year’s Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards, organised by the GAI in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The GAI Yearbook showcases the winning projects of the Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards from the UK and internationally, giving an overview of each project and the ironmongery specification. It also includes a comprehensive update on ironmongery standards from GAI technical manager, Douglas Masterson.

If you would like a free copy of the 2019 Yearbook, please contact info@gai.org.uk.
