Free Access Control Training Sessions from Industry Experts

Codelocks is offering Lock 101 and Troubleshooting training sessions to help trade professionals refresh and bolster access control knowledge and skills.

The free training sessions will take place at the Codelocks offices in Newbury, on 24 March, 28 April and 26 May 2022.

The training gives locksmiths, installers, facilities managers, and operations managers the chance to learn first-hand from Codelocks experts. Participants can choose between attending a Codelocks Mechanical or Codelocks Electronic session.

Attendees will benefit from an overview of Codelocks’ lock range and learn about access control solutions for different applications, and how best to install them. The programme will also cover lock troubleshooting, including common faults and maintenance issues, which can help locksmiths and installers to improve their service for customers.

Codelocks Marketing Manager, Ros Bayliss says,
“Our training is an excellent opportunity for participants to receive specialist guidance from Codelocks experts, refresh and expand their skills and get to grips with Codelocks’ latest innovative locks. In an increasingly competitive industry, it’s important for trade professionals to stay on top of market trends and understand how to provide the best customer experience possible.
“Codelocks has been running unique training sessions since 2012. We held virtual webinars for the past couple of years to ensure installers and locksmiths were kept up to date with the latest Codelocks products and the benefits they bring for customers, but we are looking forward to getting back to the hands-on sessions this year.”
Additionally, the sessions invite attendees to consider the importance of maintaining hygiene measures in a post-Covid world. Codelocks’ experts will share valuable insight into how products like Clean by Codelocks, an antibacterial coating that reduces bacterial growth by 99.96%, can help maintain hygiene measures as employees return to workplaces.

The Codelocks training sessions are free to attend and have received positive feedback each year.

GSM Technology Solves Entry Challenge for Residents

A luxury residential complex in Docklands, East London has opted for GSM technology to help it overcome the entry management challenges residents were facing.

Cyclops Wharf is a riverside development that offers 180 luxury apartments and 24 mews style houses. The existing telephone-based intercom system operated on technology now obsolete which meant that the running and maintenance of the system, and any repairs or modifications required, were becoming too expensive to manage.

The complex has four external gates and seven blocks so it required a highly flexible and secure system that’s easy to use and could be quickly adapted or modified if and when needed. As well as individual entry and access management for residents there needed to be entry management for delivery companies, couriers and visitors' calls too.

Installer Nimata UK recommended that a new door entry system, that operated on up-to-date technology, was installed. Based on the size of the development, the number of residents and the level of access control management required, 4G GSM technology was chosen with Nimata opting to install the Videx 4G GSM intercom system.

Steve Cheung, Director at Nimata UK, said:
“By replacing the older intercom system with the Videx 4G GSM, tenant service charges have significantly decreased as it costs a lot less to run and maintain the Videx GSM system.
“The previous system was telephone-based which resulted in increasingly higher telephone charges with multiple telephones lines using the system.
“We decided to opt for the Videx 4G GSM system because Videx is one the biggest entry and access control manufacturers and suppliers in the UK, and the company is well known in the market and highly regarded as a trusted and reputable provider.
“We could have opted to go with other, smaller suppliers, but we chose Videx based on their experience and impressive knowledge and customer service record.
“Before opting for the Videx 4G GSM, we spoke at length with Videx’s technical team who explained the features and benefits of the system really well and explained how it would help overcome the entry challenges faced at Cyclops Wharf.”

Nimata UK explored other options including 3G technology but wanted a future-proof door entry management system for the complex. The Videx 4G GSM system provides these and more advanced features to deliver future requirements for the development if needed.

Mabs Alam, Videx’s Regional Sales Manager for the London and South East region, said:
“The 4G GSM offers a highly convenient and highly secure entry solution that can be tailored to almost any entry need. It includes many features to make the process of calling an apartment as simple as possible. These include a graphical display with clear instructions through each step of the call and voice annunciation to clearly identify the calling process.
“The system has been designed with the greatest flexibility in mind and offers programming options via apps, text messages, a web browser and a PC both local and remotely.
“Our digital 4G intercoms can support up to 1,000 apartments each with coded access and proximity access as additions to the dial to open access control option.
“Also, the Videx 4G GSM provides temporary access codes and dial to open numbers that can be added at any time for visitors requiring access for only short periods of time.
“Up to 10 free access periods can be setup if required allowing visitors free access during certain times.
“With the combination of its versatility and level of security, the 4G GSM is the ideal entry solution for any building, property or development.”

Installing an Alutech Corner Bifold - Step-by-Step Video

Alutech Systems is continuing to provide support to its fabricator and installer network by premiering a new video on its popular YouTube channel.

This latest video takes the viewer through the installation of a 6-pane set of Alutech BF73 bi-folding doors with moving corner post, while also highlighting the benefits of the system.

You can watch the video that shows the installation process step-by-step by scanning the QR code below or viewing it directly on YouTube using this link - https://qrco.de/bclPEA.

The video is intended to offer support to experienced installers who may be unfamiliar with the Alutech BF73 system, as well as act as a training guide for those new to the trade.

The Company is also actively encouraging its network of approved fabricators to include the videos on their own websites to act as an effective selling tool to the end-user.

The video also demonstrates the ease of installation and highlights some of the benefits of the BF73 system that often go overlooked but make a huge difference to its performance and quality, such as the single inline roller carriage. As it relies on less wheels, it creates less friction when in operation and is, therefore, smoother running.

What’s more, it is easier to locate onto one track as opposed to two tracks. The wheels are also larger to accommodate 120kg sash weight and the weight of the sash is distributed over one point instead of two points meaning no ‘tipping action’ occurs when the doors are stacked out together. The hinge element is also slimline to help it blend into the gasket lines for great aesthetics.

Managing Director, Steve Hudson, commented,
“We’ve been overwhelmed with how well our series of fabrication and installation videos have been received and have got some great feedback from our customers about them. We have plans in the pipeline to produce many more videos over the coming year and are also encouraging our clients to include our videos on their own websites so that their customers can see how great our products are.”

HorizAL Set for NEC Appearance

Aluminium gate specialist HorizAL will have a major presence at the upcoming Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the Birmingham NEC, which will run from the 24th to the 27th of March.

HorizAL™ is the French aluminium gate manufacturer that has partnered with Stockport-based Alucorb to offer UK gate installers access to a wide range of durable, reliable and great looking gates.

HorizAL’s vast portfolio of gates will be on show to the installation trade throughout the show, with free tickets available to anyone that wants to come along to view the products and talk to the team.

HorizAL gates are virtually maintenance-free and coated with marine-grade Qualicoat thermal lacquering (the highest European standard), which ensures longevity and reliability of colour and finish. The lacquering itself is guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years.

Register for two free one-day tickets courtesy of Horizal

Also, each gate is made from a reinforced structure, which reduces the stress caused by strong winds. Each HorizAL gate is properly engineered, rather than ‘screwed & glued’ like cheaper alternatives, then rigorously factory-tested at the production facility in Lyon before being CE marked and shipped to the UK.

The quality of the product has led gate installers across the UK to get involved and become part of the firm’s nationwide installation network.

And Darren Weatherill, Operations Director at Alucorb Ltd, is expecting this number to rise significantly after the company’s appearance at the NEC:

“When people see these gates they are blown away, he explains. “The quality just shines through – and when we tell them about the huge amount of support we offer to installers, it’s often a case of signing them up there and then!”
Installers are currently able to access a sales pack for just £499.00 plus VAT that offers a wealth of marketing materials and tools, designed to demonstrate the superior quality of the HorizAL product to potential customers.

This includes their own homepage on the horizal.co.uk website, featuring personalised content, full-colour brochures, business cards, a price list, technical brochures, colour catalogues and demonstration cases. Two sample gates – normally one powder-coated and one woodgrain finish – are also provided, in padded protective bags.

Register for two free one-day tickets courtesy of Horizal

They also benefit from a new technical addition to the HorizAL operation - a 3D configuration app (IOS/Android) with augmented reality, which installers can use to create a 3D recreation of any site, so customers can see exactly how the finished installation will look on their property.

Ongoing support for installers means that everything arrives perfectly to site on a timed delivery. Full post-sales support is then provided by Alucorb, so the installer is never left with any unanswered questions or unsolved problems.
“We’re really looking forward to showing installers at the NEC the products we supply and the support we offer,” concludes Darren Weatherill. “Anybody who wants to come and see us at the show can have free tickets. So, my message to those who want the chance of joining what is the UK’s fastest growing installation network is to give us a call – it may be the best decision you ever make!”
Don’t miss out – call 0161 4065910 today to secure free NEC tickets and find out more about HorizAL products. Or visit the website at www.horizal.co.uk

The Unique Prince of Whales

Rodger Dudding of Studio 434®, the owner of what is believed to be Europe’s largest private car collection, has always revered and admired the cars designed by the late William Towns.

Rodger has a passion for one of William Towns’s classic designs, the Aston Martin Lagonda “Wedge”, a car that divides opinion but is certainly very striking and will turn heads when seen on the road. Rodger’s collection includes the first “Wedge” delivered to a customer and the last car produced by the company.

Rodger Dudding now has 25 classic Aston Martin Lagonda “Wedge” models based at his Studio434® locations in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. His personal car collection in total is now over 500 models representing cars from the early 1900’s to the present day and reflecting largely British and European car marques and models.

Rodger is a great admirer of William Towns car designs, he not only has what is believed to be the world’s largest collection of Aston Martin Lagonda “Wedge” models but also two other Bill Town’s designed cars the Hustler mini based models.

Take a look at the full car collection on YouTube

The Studio434® collection does contain some very unusual, rare and collectable cars including one of the first Ferrari Dino’s produced and one of only two Railton models, the Claremont which is based on the Jaguar XJS running gear.

In addition, Rodger has the world’s largest collection of the largely unknown Clyno marque, a British built range of cars, vans and motorcycles manufactured in the 1920/30’s but now largely forgotten. The collection also features some one off British cars including the AC 378 GT Zagato Prototype and one of the limited edition Jaguar XJ220 models.

Studio434® is a unique car, motorcycle and memorabilia collection location that is increasingly being used for corporate lunches and dinners, the available space at the second Studio434® location is being promoted for corporate events, sales meetings, conferences, exhibitions and shows.

The facility in two locations based north of London in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire and is available for private visits by car clubs and other organisations and is increasingly being used by commercial companies and banks for corporate lunches, diver and sales meetings. The second facility also has a fully equipped film and television studio.

Full details are available by visiting www.studio434.co.uk

Editor's note:

If you have been in the garage door industry for as long as I have, the name Rodger Dudding might ring a bell as long as you hail from London and the South East.

Rodger built a business called Dudrich Holdings which according to Wikipedia owned 12,000 garages as of February 2015 that were rented to the public. Known as Mr Lockup by his customers, Rodger became "the largest private owner of garages" in the United Kingdom.

He has worked for ASSA for more than 10 years, starting in the position of General Manager of Replacement Multi-Point Locks in 2012. Prior to joining ASSA, Richard held the position of Commercial Director for 13 years at E. Aldridge Limited.

Neil Rule

Neil started working in the industry in 1998. After leaving school, he served an electrical apprenticeship at Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council. For more than 20 years, Neil has held sales and commercial roles of increasing responsibility within the area of mechanical cylinder locking and electronic access control systems.

Neil is the ARGE Work Group Convenor for Masterkey Systems Data Security, sits as a UK expert on CEN/TC33/WG4 and is a BSI committee member. He is also a longstanding member of DHF.

The new roles for Richard and Neil come on the back of David Whitworth’s retirement as Chairman of the Building Hardware Group and Chairman of DHF. In January of this year, the federation announced he would be stepping down following many years of loyal service. The new Chairman of DHF was announced to be Paul Browne, former UK Chief Technology Officer & Business Development Director of ASSA ABLOY.
“We are delighted to welcome Richard and Neil into their new positions and wish them both the very best,” said DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry.
“Both have a tremendous level of experience in the industry, and together with Paul Browne’s new appointment, DHF is facing the year with great optimism and a superb team in place. We are grateful to be able to benefit from the knowledge and skillset that, collectively, they bring with them”.

DHF represents all the key players in the following sectors: locks and building hardware, doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, domestic garage doors and automated gates.

With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service. They all operate within a Code of Conduct governing standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety, business integrity and CE marking compliance.

Rhino Doors upgrades its North West premises

Industrial Door manufacturer, Rhino Doors, has relocated its North West operation to a new base in Preston, Lancashire, to facilitate its continued growth throughout 2022.

The company, founded in 1983, produces high-performance engineered doors for the protection of people and assets, working with organisations spanning the sectors of defence, transport and critical infrastructure.

Rhino Doors moves to Preston from its former offices in Burscough, whilst still continuing to operate the main manufacturing facility in Port Talbot, South Wales.

Recently, the company has worked extensively across the transport sector, carrying out manufacturing and installation work for Transport for London and a major North American rail tunnel project.

Rhino’s move to upgraded premises highlights the continued success of the wider Rhino Engineering Group, including its specialist subsidiaries focusing on door installation and the production of explosion relief products for the global hydrogen market.

The new facility will serve not only as an office base for staff based in the region, but significantly it will serve as the first regional depot for the aftersales business, Rhino Site Systems Limited that was launched in the summer of 2021. Additionally, the facility will also provide overflow manufacturing capacity, all in support of the Group’s broader growth plans.

“With significant growth seen across the company in 2021, we're pleased to have secured new premises to facilitate our continued growth,” said Stuart Lawrence, Group Managing Director of Rhino Engineering Group.
“Our previous office location, in Burscough, was home to the North West branch for five years and was a great base to allow us to grow.
“But now, at an exciting time in the company’s history, we’re looking forward to new ventures and putting plans in place for our continued and sustainable growth through the years to come.”

Optima leads the way with its portfolio of Environmental Product Declaration

Optima Products (Optima), a leading manufacturer and installer of aluminium-framed glass partitioning systems, announces the publication of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) across ten of its product categories.

As building products are becoming increasingly scrutinized for their environmental impact, the move represents a major milestone in Optima’s objective to become one of the world’s most sustainable partitioning system manufacturers.

The publication of Optima’s EPDs is the culmination of a 5-year process, requiring a high level of accurate and comprehensive information to prove the business’s sustainable credentials.

Based on factual data derived from Life Cycle Assessments (LCA's), EPDs are composed in compliance with ISO 14025:2006 Environmental Labels and Declarations - Type III Environmental Declarations. Subject to rigorous external inspection and audition, 12 months of production data from Optima’s manufacturing facility in Radstock, UK was verified by an independent third party to ensure full transparency before the EPDs could be confirmed.

Significantly, as the data presented in EPDs follows a standard format, eliminating the need to interpret different kinds of Life Cycle Assessments, or data claiming to be an LCA, it simplifies the specifier’s comparison process.

Optima also holds ISO 14001 certification, reflecting an emerging industry standard around measuring the environmental impact of individual components. As criteria specifiers are increasingly curious about LCAs during the product selection process, it’s a must-have for any building product manufacturer in the age of green design.

Ultimately, Optima’s EPDs give specifiers the confidence, clarify and affirmation they are working with certified products that have undergone rigorous assessment, and meet official standards which guarantee environmental best practice.

Commenting on the achievement, Christian Mabey, Managing Director of Optima Products says:
"Optima has always strived to be at the forefront of the environmental agenda and to surpass specifier requirement and expectations.
"As the EPDs offer thorough data and information about the manufacturing of each of our products, architects, designers and fit-out professionals alike can be confident they are making a sound decision when it comes to specifying partition systems which meet the brief’s requirements for sustainable, functional and stylish office spaces.
"Representing the next step in our ongoing ESG strategy, we hope this achievement will further encourage commercial specifiers to make greener choices when it comes to product selection."

The EPDs are now available across the Optima range of products, this includes the recently launched Optima Adaptable Wall (OAW), the Adaptable Meeting Room (AMR), single glazed/double-glazed partitions and the entire door systems range.

Lights, camera, action!

JD (UK) LTD, the sole UK distributor of Alutech sectional garage doors, automation and roller shutter components, is excited to unveil a series of 6 videos made to demonstrate the step-by-step process of installing an Alutech sectional garage door.

Filmed while on a live assisted installation, these videos are designed to act as training support in the installation of an Alutech sectional garage door for those unfamiliar with the product and also to answer the most frequently asked questions of installers fitting the product on a regular basis.

The videos star industry stalwart, Rick Hamill, Garage Door Technical Support Engineer at JD (UK) LTD. Rick has a wealth of knowledge within the garage door industry. A joiner by trade in his early days, Rick has specialised in garage doors for 24 years, since 1997.

He joined JD (UK) LTD in August 2020, providing installation assistance and technical support. You’ll mostly find him out on the road assisting new customers with their first installs and providing training for new staff of existing customers. With his years of experience, there’s rarely a problem he can’t solve. “There’s always a solution,” says Rick.

To watch the videos please scan the QR code or go to https://qrco.de/bcoAOQ

Once the camera had stopped rolling, a new Alutech client, Neil at Blueberry Automation, said, “I just wanted to commend Rick on the assisted fit recently, in fact, the whole team have been a pleasure to work with from start to finish, thank you all.

“Rick is very knowledgeable and assumed nothing, which is just as well as that’s what I knew! He was patient, communicating well and thoroughly on all levels, to me and your film crew.
“All elements were shown and explained. Having the ‘why’ and seeing the ‘do’ is how myself and many others learn. Rick is a genuine credit to your team and a valuable asset; I will only use JD (UK) LTD as my sectional supplier.”

The company has already received praise in response to the videos with some commenting that the videos have helped them to improve their installation processes.

Woman left Brain Damaged after being Crushed by Electric Gate, settles case for €8 million

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has today urged all companies with responsibilities for the safety of automated gates, including owners, managers, and service providers, to ensure that they fully understand the applicable safety standards and apply them.

The warning comes following a report regarding a woman who was injured by an automated gate in 2016; a case that has just been settled in an €8 million High Court action in the Irish Republic.

The report indicates that the woman, who was in her 40s at the time of the incident, suffered a serious brain injury and is now using a wheelchair as a result of her injuries.

The civil action follows a previous criminal case in which the company responsible, who employed the plaintiff at the time, was prosecuted for a number of breaches of health and safety legislation in relation to the safety of the gate. It appears that the gate in question did not have adequate force limitation protection in an area where a person could be entrapped by the gate.
“The central standard for automated gate safety is EN 12453; this standard has been in use since 2000 with very little change to the requirements for safety in that time,” explains DHF’s Senior Training and Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins.
“When we assess the 20 or more incidents that have sadly led to death, injury and prosecution over the past 10 years, we see that had the standard been applied, the incident would have been avoided.”
The standard requires that the area surrounding the gate should be safe between ground level and 2.5 metres. All hazards that people can reach should be protected such that either the gate cannot make contact at all, or that if it can, the force it can apply to a
person must be limited to the levels of force and time prescribed by EN 12453. This does not just apply to the main closing edges, but to all reachable reducing gaps and points of impact.
“Considering the vast numbers of automated entrances in service, there are thankfully relatively few incidents with automated gates but when things do go wrong, the outcome can be devastating,” says Nick.
“The recently improved DHF COP document, DHF TS 013:2021-1, provides all the guidance necessary to ensure automated gates and traffic barriers are safe to legal limits. All companies and persons with responsibilities in management, supervision or working on automated gates on site should be aware of the rules explained in TS 013.
DHF runs nationally accredited training courses that provide a level 2 qualification for safety, whilst for managers, supervisors and the self-employed, it offers a level 4 legislation qualification. DHF TS 013-3 provides valuable guidance for owners and managers procuring new systems and maintaining existing systems in their care.
“We should like to stipulate that there is absolutely no need for automated gates to be unsafe for people,” concludes Nick.
“The pain and suffering inflicted on victims, their family members and others affected is totally unnecessary when systems are installed and maintained according to national and European standards. This common-sense approach also avoids the financial damage caused by criminal prosecutions and civil actions for damages that routinely result following such a tragedy.”
DHF’s continuing commitment to tackling the thorny issue of gate safety has shone a much-needed spotlight on unsafe automated gates and raised awareness of what proper installation and maintenance should look like, in addition to how to prevent accidents.

It continues to educate and inform professional installers, industry contacts and the general public on the dangers centred around poorly installed and maintained powered gates, in addition to how to report an unsafe gate and what to look for.

Through its training programmes, technical specifications, and collaborative working, DHF has seen an encouraging improvement in the quality of gate installations as well as the knowledge of installers in the UK, and it will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the risk of injury, or death, caused by automated gates is eliminated.
