Ensuring Structural Suitability for Fire Shutters

One of the most common queries faced by installers is: What type of structure should certified fire shutters be installed on to maintain fire integrity?

Leading manufacturer and trade supplier Alliance Door Engineering provides the answer. Its fully certified fire shutter design has been rigorously tested and approved for installation on steel, masonry, and even flexible structures such as timber or stud partitions.

To streamline compliance and simplify the installation process, Alliance now includes detailed structural drawings with every quotation and door drawing. These drawings clearly outline all fixing requirements and are branded with the installer’s own company logo—ready to pass on to the end user.

Installers simply need to confirm the structure type when submitting a shutter enquiry—either via the customer portal or through traditional channels. Bespoke drawings are then automatically generated to match the specific installation scenario, ensuring a smoother process from quotation to commissioning.

Since 2001, Alliance Door Engineering has been a trusted trade supplier of high-performance industrial doors and shutters, with a longstanding commitment to compliance, quality, and customer support.

DHF announces the launch of its Irish website

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is delighted to announce the launch of its new Ireland-specific website, now live and accessible via www.dhfonline.ie

Developed in direct response to requests from Irish members, the site has been created to provide a dedicated space that reflects their requirements. It will serve as a central hub for professionals to access training, technical guidance, and member services designed to help them succeed in a competitive and evolving industry; the platform also facilitates payment in euros for training courses and invoices.

Being a member of DHF based in Ireland offers the same variety of exclusive benefits, including free technical CPD webinars delivered throughout the year to enhance knowledge and keep professionals current with industry changes. The usual DHF technical helpline and attending open days to support its members will continue as will in-person meetings. These are held in Ireland and provide valuable opportunities for networking and the discussion of regional issues. Members are also encouraged to join virtual meetings held regularly to ensure consistent support and engagement regardless of location.

“We are delighted to launch our new website for Ireland that enables our members access to location-specific information quickly and easily, as well as regular news updates and social media interaction,” explains DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “The new regional platform has been developed to support professionals in Ireland’s door, gate, and hardware industries, reflecting the specific needs of the Irish market, and delivers a seamless and tailored experience for both Irish-based members and non-members, offering access to relevant, up-to-date information, industry resources, and even payment in euros.”

In November 2023, DHF created a bespoke version of its electronic newsletter, Dashboard, for members in Ireland. This new website, featuring industry content relevant to the region, is designed to provide information that is complementary to the newsletter.

As part of DHF’s ongoing commitment to professional development across the industry, it continues to offer a wide range of flexible training options. Virtual and distance learning courses enable individuals to gain vital qualifications from any location, reducing travel time and minimising downtime.

Low-mileage Jaguar with royal connection heads to auction

A distinguished slice of royal motoring history – the 1960 Jaguar Mk IX Saloon that chauffeured the Princess of Wales and her children to the wedding of her sister, Pippa Middleton – is set to go under the hammer at H&H Classics’ inaugural Kelham Hall auction on Wednesday 10th September.

The car, which is estimated at £30,000-£35,000, formed part of the wedding transport at St Mark’s Church, Englefield, carrying Catherine, Princess of Wales (then Duchess of Cambridge), with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who took on the roles of page boy and bridesmaid.

Finished in elegant Warwick Grey with red leather upholstery and walnut trim, the Jaguar presents today as still a fine example of the marque, with its interior and exterior being in excellent condition. Despite the car being 65 years old, the odometer records just 31,000 miles from new, supported by an impressive history file and accompanying V5C.

In recent years, around £6,000 has been spent on mechanical attention by its current owner, including careful work to the engine, fuel system and brakes, ensuring that the car remains both highly usable and true to its period character.

Oliver Fernyhough-Martin, junior motor car specialist at H&H Classics, said: “The Mk IX carries a wonderful sense of presence – big, elegant, and unmistakably of its era. Its royal wedding connection only adds to the story, but it’s also the condition, originality and low mileage that make this such a compelling example in its own right. The Warwick Grey paintwork paired with the red leather interior gives it a stately yet stylish air that would grace any collection – or even another wedding.”

Launched in 1959, the Mk IX was Jaguar’s answer to Bentley and Rolls-Royce – a grand saloon that combined stately presence with a dash of sporting flair. Favoured for official duties and diplomatic events, it projected prestige without excess. It was as likely to be seen outside a London hotel as it was gliding across the continent, embodying Jaguar’s enduring blend of elegance and ambition.

Only 10,009 Mk IXs were built before the model was replaced by the Mk X in 1961, making this low-mileage, well-presented, and royally connected example especially desirable.

The Jaguar will be offered alongside an exquisite selection of classic and collector cars at Kelham Hall, marking H&H Classics’ debut sale at the historic Nottinghamshire venue. For more information about the 1960 Jaguar Mk IX Saloon and H&H Classics, visit www.handh.co.uk

Trojon Leads the UK Market with Exclusive Box and Guide Lamination Technology

Leicester-based Trojon Roller Doors continues to cement its position as the UK’s fastest-growing domestic roller garage door manufacturer, with its exclusive lamination technology driving unprecedented market growth.

As the only UK manufacturer using the advanced hot melt glue lamination method for door boxes and guides, Trojon has created a distinct competitive advantage in the industry. This proprietary process represents a significant advancement over traditional painted or powder-coated finishes found in competitor products.

Unlike painted surfaces that can chip, scratch or fade over time, Trojon’s laminated boxes and guides maintain their premium appearance throughout years of use and exposure to the elements. The laminated surfaces resist weathering and fading, ensuring that doors maintain their pristine appearance with minimal maintenance requirements - a significant selling point for homeowners seeking reliable, long-term solutions.

“Our investment in lamination technology has been a game-changer,” explains John Munday, Director at Trojon. “Property developers and installers increasingly recognise that our laminated products deliver exceptional longevity and weather resistance. The finish not only withstands scratches and fading but also maintains its premium appearance for years, significantly reducing maintenance requirements for homeowners.”

The firm’s laminated roller door boxes and guides are available in an extensive range of finishes, from classic woodgrain effects to contemporary tones, allowing seamless integration with various architectural styles. This versatility, combined with the durability of laminated surfaces, has made Trojon a preferred choice for suppliers and installers seeking premium garage door solutions.

The company’s reputation for manufacturing ‘fitter friendly’ products continues to grow, supported by its dedication to quality British manufacturing. Trojon maintains strict quality control over their lamination process, ensuring consistent excellence across the product range.

This combination of unique technology, product durability and customer care has helped establish Trojon as a leader in the UK’s domestic roller garage door sector. The innovative approach to lamination, unmatched by other UK manufacturers, provides customers with garage door solutions that deliver both superior performance and lasting visual appeal.

Raising the Tempo with British Aluminium

Essex-based Tempo Aluminium has signed a three-year supply agreement with Stellar Aluminium Systems. The move marks a significant step in the company’s strategic ambition to deliver a premium, performance-led product range tailored to the needs of its trade, housebuilder and commercial customer base.

Andrew Curtis, Office Manager at Tempo Aluminium, said: “We wanted a British-designed aluminium system that offered both outstanding aesthetics and technical excellence. Stellar stood out from the start. The slim sightlines of the system are incredibly impressive and the fact that the system is fully Part L and PAS 24:2022 compliant by design made it the perfect fit for our new build and specification-driven customers.

“Operational efficiency is critical in any business and Stellar delivers on that front too. Thanks to their rapid and reliable turnaround, including coloured profiles, we’ve been able to reduce our service times to a highly competitive 2–3 weeks. That’s a real game-changer for our customers, especially in today’s fast-paced construction environment.

“The Stellar range is impressive, but the new Heritage Window really stood out. The window’s blend of classic design detailing and high-performance credentials will be a popular choice for our customers especially in the new build and refurbishment markets.”

Established in January 2025, Tempo Aluminium has quickly established a strong presence across the South East and expanding its reach with a nationwide service. The company now manufactures the full Stellar aluminium window and door range, including Flush Casement Windows, Flush Residential Doors, Inline Sliding Doors and the new Stellar Heritage Window.

Jon Foulds, Key Account Manager at Stellar Aluminium, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Tempo Aluminium on board. Their commitment to quality, service and innovation makes them a natural partner for the Stellar brand. Their early focus on the Heritage Window is a clear sign they understand the market and what their customers need.”

Arrow Group Achieves SBD - Reinforcing Commitment to Safety and Quality

Founded in 1986, Arrow began in Hull supplying PVC products to the trade. Today it operates from 11 locations across the UK, from Scotland to Bournemouth offering a wide range of bespoke security solutions including security gates, roller shutters, industrial doors and more. The company works across a number of different sectors from retail and food production to pharmaceutical and distribution.

Attracting and retaining the workforce for the future

Jack Robinson, SVP & Head of Human Resources at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA, explains why the security and access solutions industry needs to focus on attracting new early talent.

It was recently reported in EU Business News that three in five young people would be unlikely to consider a career in manufacturing[i]. When we couple this with the fact that there has been a steady decline of traditional manufacturing apprenticeships in many European countries, it creates a real risk for a significant skills gap in our industry.

If manufacturing isn’t attracting and retaining early talent, this will lead to a skills gap that will ultimately mean less innovation and lower productivity in one of our most vital sectors.

So, what’s the scale of the problem – and what can we do about it?

 The need for fresh talent

Welcoming new talent into manufacturing is increasingly vital to the sector’s long-term success. As existing talented workers retire, we urgently need early talent to pick-up the baton and carry forward the industry, developing our future technologies and helping us continue our journey to work smarter, safer, and more sustainably.

As early talent enter the workforce, they bring new ways of thinking and different perspectives. While experienced professionals have embraced new technologies over time, early talent often enter the workforce already fluent in digital tools, data-driven systems, and platforms like AI. Together, these complementary strengths can drive innovation and adaptability across the industry

What we as an industry can do

To compete for the next generation of talent, manufacturing must evolve in how we present ourselves to new jobseekers.

First, learning and development opportunities are essential. As well as equipping new recruits with technical skills, they demonstrate that manufacturing takes ambition seriously and offers credible, long-term career paths that are dynamic and flexible. By the same token, structured mentorship programmes give employees the feedback and support they need to grow, and ultimately, signal that they will be valued and invested in from day one.

We also need to ensure our hiring processes and workplace environments are attractive to jobseekers. That means offering a digital-friendly recruitment process, role models that we can truly look up to, and a focus on wellbeing within the workplace — creating an environment where people feel seen, supported, and inspired to thrive.

What we’re doing at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA

At ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA, we’re constantly investing in our early talent programmes. Since 2010, our EMEIA Graduate Programme has welcomed over 200 ambitious young professionals onto an 18-month development journey – one that offers real opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to the business.

I’ve been personally involved in shaping this programme over the years and I’m proud to say it has achieved a 5-year retention rate of over 90% following completion. This is testament to the programme’s effective support structures and real commitment to the long-term career prospects of all participants.

Since 2022, female representation in STEM roles across our business has grown by 20%, and women now hold 27% of management positions. We have ambitious targets to continue to grow female representation.

Further illustrating our focus on creating a workplace that is inclusive and has a real sense of belonging, 85% of our colleagues now say they feel comfortable being themselves at work. This is 3% above the industry benchmark, though our target remains 100%.

These outcomes reflect a meaningful cultural shift and the kind of company we are building for the future.

Looking ahead

Creating a truly future-focused business culture is an ongoing process. The world is evolving quickly – and so must we. This means constantly improving how we recruit, support, and retain our employees, while continuing to build an industry that reflects the values and expectations of the modern workforce.

Designed to achieve PAS24:2022, Secured by Design approved, and featuring the TS007 2 Star Kitemark, the 220mm SupaSecure™ handle features an integrated cylinder guard. This, combined with an anti-drill disc that spins if attacked, provides complete protection of the cylinder. Chamfered backplate shoulders further resist mole-grip attacks, reinforcing its security credentials.

The 220mm version complements the existing 240mm model and offers increased compatibility with timber, aluminium, composite, and PVCu doors.

Style and substance

Both the Supa™ and SupaSecure™ 220mm door handles feature a modern, minimalist design crafted from premium-grade 304 stainless steel. Engineered for exceptional durability, they exceed industry standards with proven resistance to over 1,000 hours of salt spray testing—significantly outperforming the BS EN 1670 Grade 5 (480-hour) corrosion standard. Fully weather-tight (BS EN 6375) and extremely durable (BS EN 1906), these handles are suitable for both left- and right-handed doors and compatible with most popular lock sizes. Ergonomically designed, their sprung levers ensure smooth operation and consistently return to 90 degrees, effectively eliminating handle sag.

Paul Pearson, Product Design Director at Mila, comments: “We’re thrilled to be expanding our Supa™ and SupaSecure™ ranges with these stunning new 220mm door handles. They combine sleek, contemporary designs with first-class security – meeting the growing demand for both that we are seeing today.”

The new handles come in a range of finishes including Brushed Stainless, Polished Stainless, and Polished Gold, to suit any aesthetic.

The new 220mm Supa™ and SupaSecure™ door handles from Mila join the extremely durable, strong, corrosion-resistant, and fully suited Supa™ Range.
