Hardworking and Successful: The Modern White Van Man

http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/News/Other/Business_is_looking_up_for_the_UKs_tradespeople-801429546
IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s biggest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, has conducted a study of 10,000 tradesmen which dispels the White Van Man myth and reveals that UK trade professionals are in fact hardworking and highly skilled. Full details of the story can be found below.

Business is looking up for the UK’s tradespeople. A recent survey, aimed at busting the White Van Man myth, has revealed that trade professionals are in fact hardworking and highly skilled with an entrepreneurial spirit that is helping them to recover from the recent economic downturn.

The in-depth research, which was a study of over 10,000 people working across a range of trades, reveals that tradesmen are three times as likely to be their own boss and employ on average two additional staff. A large proportion are also keen to progress their development and improve their skills to boost business, with 58% of tradespeople saying they have a professional qualification and 13% having undertaken a degree.

When asked to best describe how they operate, 67% responded that they are highly trained and skilled, while 93% said they take pride in doing a good job, demonstrating their hardworking nature.

The study has also revealed that over half of the UK’s trade professionals are happy with current business performance. With 40% of tradespeople responding that their current income is ‘comfortable’ (compared to 32% of the general population) and 14% said that business was ‘going well’ or ‘booming’ (compared to just 10% of the UK public), the results signal an upward trend for the industry and is a good barometer that sectors such as house building, shop fitting and domestic spending on home improvements are also on the rise.

The survey highlights how trade professionals are becoming increasingly more tech-savvy to keep up to speed with the latest industry developments and meet the demands of their customers. 75% use a smartphone at work, while a tablet device is now considered essential to a growing number of tradespeople for ordering supplies on site (31%) and on-the-go.

How are tradespeople driving their business forward? Trust is still high among trade professionals with 84% gaining new business through word of mouth. With 74% of tradespeople responding that they always turn up on time and 82% giving honest and accurate advice, their reliable and professional nature is helping to ensure future recommendations.

The report also reveals that tradespeople are amongst the happiest workers in the UK. Asked to rate how much they love their job, tradespeople gave an average score of over 8 out of ten, 16% higher than the general population’s average score of 6.9 out of 10.

The comprehensive research was carried out by IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s biggest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade. The poll surveyed tradespeople about their work practices, background and tastes to build the broadest picture ever into what makes our tradespeople tick.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said:
“We conducted this in-depth research to gauge the current feeling of the industry. It’s great to see tradespeople not only performing well, but feeling so happy and confident about the future.

“The results show that their success can be attributed to their own hard work and determination to weather the recent recession. We’ve found that the outlook for tradespeople is resoundingly positive and, as such, they aren’t worried about future business. This is a good indicator for the wider economy, as tradespeople are a barometer of wider investment and an upturn in domestic spending.”

Recent figures from the Office of National Statistics also support the findings of the study and the hard working nature of our tradespeople, revealing that 60% of self-employed trade professionals are more likely to work a 45 hour week or more[1]. What’s more, its figures also highlight how the construction industry grew by 0.2% in the last three months of 2013, as house building increases by almost 20%[2].

Cautious optimism from fire door experts

New research has revealed that knowledge about the critical role of fire doors and how they can save lives and protect property is gradually being transformed.

The Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) recently conducted a survey of fire door professionals to see whether understanding was improving after a year in which it had been noted that property owners were more likely than ever to receive large fines or even significant prison sentences through RRO prosecutions.

Almost half of respondents thought that knowledge of fire safety issues has increased over the past year and more than a third thought that property managers’ awareness of their responsibilities under the RRO had increased.

Just below 40% believed that that the role of fire doors was better understood than it had been 12 months ago whilst 31% thought that appreciation of the implications of modifying them had increased.

Respondents said that around only around one in five contractors and installers change fire door specifications, an issue that many have felt has been much more widespread in the past.

FDIS general manager Neil Ashdown says:
“Whilst there is still much work to be done, it’s great to see that a great deal of progress has been made in people’s understanding of the vital role of fire doors and how to manage their performance in the event of a fire.”

Mandela's Signed 'Democracy' BMW For Sale at Bonhams- Exactly 20 Years After Election

One of the exclusive limited edition run of only ten 'Democracy Cars' built by the German manufacturer in 2004 to commemorate ten years of democracy in South Africa

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the BMW collector, the very special 2004 318i Sports Saloon offered is a chance to purchase a piece of history. Estimated at £3,000-5,000, this Democracy Car will go under the hammer on April 28th at Bonhams Collector’s Motor Cars and Automobilia Sale, at the RAF Museum in Hendon.

On 27th April 1994 Nelson Mandela had become South Africa's first fully democratically elected president, and to mark the tenth anniversary of this historic event BMW South Africa and its employees donated their resources and time to build these special cars, while many of BMW's parts suppliers assisted the project by donating components.

Ex-president Mandela personally signed the interior of every one, and each was issued with an authenticating plaque. They were intended as fund raising vehicles to be auctioned across the world for the benefit of various charities, the principal recipient being the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.

Individual Democracy Cars were exported to Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, the remainder being sold in South Africa. The example offered here is the UK Democracy Car, donated by BMW UK, which was auctioned at Madame Tussaud's in London in June 2005, selling to an anonymous bidder for £38,000. The proceeds of the 'Put Yourself in My Shoes' auction were split between the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and the UK children's charities Norwood and Shine.

The current vendor bought the BMW from its original purchaser, a friend of his, in 2006. A manual transmission model finished in silver with black leather interior, 'RX55 BUO' has been maintained by BMW North Oxford and comes with full service history, complete book pack, spare key, torch, etc. Currently displaying a total of 46,000 miles on the odometer, the car is described as in generally very good condition and offered with current MoT / Tax and V5C registration document.

The car is to be sold without reserve, presenting a unique opportunity for anyone to bid on this piece of South African democratic history.

For a full listing of upcoming sales, plus details of Bonhams specialist departments go to www.bonhams.com.

20 per cent Increase in Visitor Attendance Highlights Returning Confidence to Door Industry

20 per cent increase in visitor attendance at The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show and The Home Improvement Show at NEC, Birmingham, highlights returning confidence to the self-build and renovation markets.

This exceptional increase in visitor numbers at the two shows this year put 500 companies from the self-build, renovation and home improvement markets in front of 32,353 keen home improvers and serious self-builders reinforcing the increasing demand for property advice and expertise in the marketplace.

For the first time, the two shows joined forces at the NEC, Birmingham from 27-30 March, to extend the range and choice of companies showcasing their offerings within the renovating, interior, eco and self build industries and to enhance the consumer experience.

The events also attracted five per cent more exhibitors who engaged with consumers to discuss their latest products and new technologies, resulting in 15 per cent of extended floor space. 75 per cent of companies have subsequently rebooked stands at future Homebuilding and Renovating events.

This year Centaur brought on board a new feature, the Energy Saving Home, which became the highlight exhibit at the shows. This offered consumers insight into the latest eco devices and Government schemes to help them save money and control their household energy consumption through sustainable living.

In addition, The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show welcomed a new expert to the panel - Piers Taylor, award-winning RIBA architect and co-presenter of BBC2 series ‘The House that £100k Built’. He shared his knowledge on the importance of investing time and money in a renovation and how to choose the right companies for materials and finding a designer and an architect for a project.

Nick Noble, Joint MD of Centaur Home Interest Media, says:
“The shows’ successful figures for the first exhibitions in 2014 shed light on the evolving consumer trends within the property market. There is a general feeling that the industry has started to pick up and this was highlighted by the increased number of exhibitors, their range of services and new features. Additional visitors this year contributed to the events’ achievements and the majority of consumers were serious selfbuilders and home improvers who spent a considerable amount of time liaising with relevant businesses and making informed purchasing decisions.”

The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show and The Home Improvement Show attracted exhibitors covering a wide range of sectors to cater for all interests. From kitchens, bathrooms, home electronics, garden, interiors and flooring to design, finance, energy sustainability, restoration and legal issues, consumers were able to receive valuable guidance for every type of project.

Carl Farrow, Technical Development Manager of ID Systems says:
“We've exhibited at The Hombuilding & Renovating Shows since 2002 and are always impressed by the quality of the visitor. The show gives us a great opportunity to showcase our range of products and results in a large number of enquiries and subsequent orders. The complimentary marketing material and tickets means that we can actively promote the show inviting interested customers to see the quality of our systems and why we are the market leaders in our field.”

The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show and The Home Improvement Show were held at the NEC from 27-30 March 2014. Next year’s show runs at the NEC, Birmingham from 26-29 March and there are a further six events held throughout the country each year.
