Laidlaw’s commitment to training confirmed with RIBA-approved CPDs

Architects and construction professionals can attain up to double allocated points with Laidlaw’s high quality RIBA-approved material.

Laidlaw, one of the country’s leading names in architectural ironmongery, balustrades and security systems, is an approved member of the RIBA CPD Providers Network and offers a series of four CPDs for professionals, one of which is an approved core curriculum subject.

Managing Director Peter O’Brien said:
“We’re committed to high quality education and training, which is why we have created resources on four key topics that will help professionals in the architecture and construction sectors to improve their knowledge and also learn about innovations in the market.
“We’re very proud to be part of this prestigious network of providers because it guarantees that our learning resources have achieved the hallmark of the quality required for this most demanding of sectors.”

All material is rigorously assessed within the strict guidelines laid down by RIBA’s assessors and because Laidlaw is part of the CPD Providers Network, any module completed is worth double the points under the RIBA CPD system.

Access for All, which is an approved core curriculum subject, focuses on the requirements of the Equality Act and such topics as door opening force, accessibility, minimum obligations for door hardware and performance criteria. It also looks at corrective solutions for inappropriate design in public buildings with regards to accessibility.

Handrails and Balustrades: The Specifiers’ Guide also looks at the Equality Act and requirements for handrails and balustrades, including heights and projections, materials, loading forces, and overcoming challenges.

In the Helping to Specify Architectural Ironmongery module, learners will cover specification procedures, Declaration of Performance Certification and how to schedule a typical building. It also has a basic introduction to hinges, door closers, hardware, locks, access control and anti-ligature products.

The fourth CPD module on Specifying Integrated Doorsets looks at the meaning of CE marking, the benefits of an integrated doorset, standards, finishes, hardware selection and specialist requirements.

Each module comprises a 50-minute seminar, working models, literature and handouts.

To discover more about Laidlaw’s RIBA-approved CPD resources, visit www.laidlaw.co.uk or telephone 01902 600400 for details.

Vauxhall Set for ‘Largest Ever’ Presence at NEC Classic Motor Show

L-type Wyvern, Viva GT and Bedford CF

Vauxhall Motors’ Heritage Centre is preparing for its largest ever display at next month’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at the NEC (November 11-13), in its fifth year supporting the event.

The Heritage Centre, home to one of the largest manufacturer-owned car collections in the UK, will be celebrating two important anniversaries – 50 years of the Viva HB and 85 years since the birth of Bedford – as well as Vauxhall’s long and illustrious export history.

Centrepiece of the HB Viva display will be the Heritage Centre’s 1970 Mark 1 ½ GT, making its public debut after a two-year ground-up restoration by Vauxhall’s Andy Boddy, Terry Forder and the Heritage Centre team. Resplendent in Monza Red, with its original Rostyle wheels and the later body-coloured bonnet, this 2.0-litre Viva GT is thought to have been registered by Vauxhall Motors when new.

Replica of Gerry Marshall’s DTV Viva GT

The Viva GT will be joined by the Heritage Centre’s ’66 Viva SL and a stunning replica of Gerry Marshall’s famous DTV GT racer, which was prepared by the great Bill Blydenstein and competed in the 1971 Osram Saloon Car Championship.

Almost from its start in 1903, Vauxhall was a prolific exporter and by 1965 had manufactured ten million vehicles for sale overseas, accounting for a third of all General Motors’ exports worldwide. Three of those cars will be on the stand: a Portuguese 1949 Wyvern L-type, a North American 1957 Velox E-type and, to be confirmed, an F-type Envoy from New Zealand.

Vauxhall is now the UK’s only remaining LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) manufacturer, and to celebrate 85 years since its Bedford CV division was born in 1931, two of the most recognisable Luton-built models will be on display: a Series-1 2.3-litre Bedford CF panel van, in fully-restored condition, and a Viva HA van, which had a remarkable 20-year production run between 1963 to 1983.

Replica of Gerry Marshall’s DTV Viva GT

Joining Vauxhall at the NEC will be a total of 13 Vauxhall owners’ clubs, including the Droopsnoot OC, the Cavalier & Chevette OC, Vauxhall Viva OC and Vauxhall Cresta OC. Together, the club’s and manufacturer’s stands will represent a ‘Vauxhall Zone’ in Hall 5 (near entrance 5.1), easily identifiable by red carpeting throughout and Vauxhall banners around the perimeter of the area.

The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show runs from November 11-13 at the NEC, Birmingham. It is the biggest club event of its kind in Europe and one of the top five classic car shows in the world.

Arge Conference Looks To The Future

Held in Le Touquet Paris-Plage, this year’s annual ARGE Conference heralded the success of its EPD programme and looked toward shaping the future ARGE agenda.

Hosted by UNIQ, the association of the lock and fittings manufacturers in France, at the picturesque seaside resort in the Picardy, Northern France, the annual gathering was attended by over 60 delegates, exceeding previous turnouts.

The conference celebrated the success of its two-year EPD project with the Institute for Construction and Environment presenting eight of the 14 planned industry representative EPDs, which are valid throughout Europe.

Presented to the ARGE Executive Board by Frank Grootens, the authorised representative of IBU from Berlin, the published EPDs cover; door closers, sliding door gears, locks, lock cylinders, panic exit devices, door and window handles, hinges and window fittings. All 14 EPDs are expected to be available by the end of November, with letterboxes and shutter hardware devices anticipated to be the next published EPDs.

In addition to marking the achievements of the EPD project, the 64th annual ARGE Conference was all about looking toward the future. Setting the agenda and agreeing the future strategic priorities was a key objective at this year’s event and one, which all delegates were actively involved with.

Workshops were set up to facilitate and stimulate these discussions. These groups focused on the future direction of standard developments, security requirements for the administration of Master Key Systems, creating a recognised European quality brand and the application of standards covering smart homes, connected devices and elmech technologies. Working Groups have now been created, whose task it is set objectives and define appropriate actions around these issues.

Commenting on this year’s conference, Hans Weissenbock, ARGE Chairman, said:
“The attendance at this year’s event was very pleasing, showing that members are keen to have their say on the future ARGE agenda and the issues we should be advocating for as a representative for the lock and hardware industry. Whilst there was consensus that ARGE should utilise its leading position as an umbrella association to speak with a strong voice to CEN and the Standards Commission, it was great to see members actively engaged with other campaigning topics. The lively debate and thoughtful observations around the four workshops ensures that the next programme of work undertaken by ARGE will be as successful as the EPD project.”

This year’s conference also included presentations from Oussamar Ammar, who captivated the audience with his humorous take on the substantial changes in the relationship between manufacturers and customers, and the altered purchasing patterns in a world of IT and global networking. Delegates were also treated to a tour of Deny Security in Saint Blimont, where they could witness first hand the high quality manufacturing processes.

The 2017 ARGE Conference will be hosted by FMMGI from Austria, taking place from 14th to 15th September in Salzburg.

For more information on this year’s conference or to download presentations from the event, please visit www.arge.org.

Alpro take Racing Line at Silverstone

Pull door handles from Alpro are being used on office buildings at Silverstone Business Park. The park is a high-performance technology and motorsport cluster adjacent to the Silverstone Circuit which is the current venue for the British Grand Prix.

The handles are Alpro’s Functional 97 pull handles which cater for a broad user base since their wide diameter (38mm) makes them suitable for both general users and those who may have an impaired ability to grip.

These stainless steel handles offer clients the build quality and durability associated with 316 grade and can be satin anodised, satin stainless, polished stainless, powder coated or nylon coated. The handles are supplied with bolt-thru or back-to-back fixing and an F27 fixing kit as standard.

The Functional 97 series pull handles can be used in pair or single arrangement. Many customers appreciate the ability to have an offset bracket that allows staff keyed access to the premises without any obstruction from the throw of the handle.

These handles are a fast turnaround item; for standard finishes the lead-time can be as little as two days though tailored finishes require additional notice. Precise colour matching to a client’s livery is a frequent requirement and one at which Alpro excel.

Keith Parry, Sales Director at Alpro, said:
“The sleek lines of these pull handles reflect the fact that fabricators now take account of every detail that contributes to the aesthetic appeal of a building. Silverstone Business Park is a centre of engineering excellence and we’re proud to be contributing to its appearance.”
The Alpro handles at Silverstone have been fitted on doors created by Ridgeway Glazing Limited who cover the whole of the UK from their purpose-built factory base in Gloucester. Ridgeway is a family-run business with a reputation for innovative design solutions across commercial and leisure sectors.

Specialisms include thermally broken curtain walling, windows and doors as well as automatic entrance screens and solar shading. Recent work includes a £1.2m project for McLaren Construction at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’s training academy.

Silverstone Business Park is occupied by companies in engineering and automotive sectors. The 275-acre site received a financial boost in 2015 when its potential for rapid growth was recognised by designation as an enterprise zone.

As Gate Safety Week begins … £500,000 court fine imposed after death caused by unsafe gate

On the eve of this week’s Gate Safety Week - a campaign drawing public attention to unsafe gates - a company was fined half a million pounds after a man was killed by a gate in Wales.

The sentence was imposed on wholesale company AF Blakemore and Son Ltd on Friday, October 7 at Cardiff Crown Court. The company admitted a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974).

Delivery driver Ronald Hayward died when he was pinned under a 300 kg (660 lb) steel gate that collapsed at their premises in Newport. The company admitted failing to ensure that the gates and gateposts were maintained and were in working order.

Gate Safety Week, which started yesterday (October 10) and runs until October 16, is being held to raise awareness of the dangers of poorly fitted and maintained gates.

It is being organised by the DHF (Door & Hardware Federation), the powered gate industry body which is campaigning for higher standards of safety for automated gates and barriers. The DHF represents Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment.

An earlier inquest into Mr Hayward’s death heard that the manual gate fell due to a failure of the hinge. The bolt fixing a bracket to an angle iron failed due to fatigue.

DHF CEO Bob Perry said: “This tragic accident would have been avoided if the gate in question had been structurally sound, regularly maintained and inspected for safety. The size of the penalty imposed - a £500,000 fine with costs of £108,625 - is a welcome sign that the courts are coming down hard on organisations and individual who put human life at risk by having unsafe gates. This type of structural failure could have equally severe consequences in powered gates.”
“Six adults and three children have been killed in accidents caused by badly installed and poorly maintained powered gates and barriers in the UK and Ireland in recent years. It is estimated that only 30% of the 500,000 automated gates in service in the UK are safe to use.”
“The responsibility for gate safety lies with gate manufacturers, installers, owners, repairers and maintainers This case is a stark reminder of the vital need for regular inspection and testing of all gate installations and this is one of the key messages we are promoting during Gate Safety Week.”

The clarion call of Gate Safety Week is Safe Gates Save Lives. Campaigners are stressing that correctly installed and regularly maintained powered gates are perfectly safe to use. But like any machine, they can be dangerous if they are not installed or maintained to the highest standards.

Gate Safety Week is the climax to a long period of activity designed to raise standards of gate safety. The DHF’s in-depth training scheme covers all aspects of powered gate safety including structural integrity and the minimization of risks posed by automation. It has seen almost 800 powered gate installation engineers successfully complete the course.

June 2016 saw the launch of a new industry code of practice designed to reduce the safety risks associated with powered gates and traffic barriers to as low as is reasonably practicable. All DHF members must abide by the code of practice (DHF TS 011:2016) which provides a framework to ensure a gate is safe and therefore complies with the law.

The National Security Inspectorate (NSI), the UKAS-accredited certification and inspection body which audits security and safety providers, is using DHF TS 011:2016 to audit installers and maintainers in its new powered gates certification scheme.

.For more information about what is happening during Gate Safety Week visit www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk.

Brizebox – solving problems for online shoppers

Brizebox is ‘kerb friendly’ and comes in a selection
of sizes and colours

A start-up company called Brizebox is giving on-line shoppers peace of mind by providing secure package delivery when they’re not at home.

Brizebox has designed a parcel delivery box requiring minimum courier intervention that keeps parcels totally secure and continues to receive items until full.

As well as being user friendly the Brizebox is also ‘kerb friendly’ and comes in a selection of sizes and colours.

Brian Willcox, the brains behind this simple yet effective design said:
“I am passionate about engineering as well as being a regular online shopper.  My experience of parcels being idly left outside my home, awkward Post Office collection hours and grumpy neighbours got me thinking about the problems faced today by on-line consumers and couriers alike.”

No corners have been cut in the manufacturing of the Brizebox and it is made to a very high standard.

All products are made of zinc-coated sheet metal and for strength and durability, lever mechanisms, locks and hinges are made of stainless steel. To prevent water ingress rubber seals are used on the drawer and door.

Every Brizebox comes with shock absorbing foam in the base to help provide a soft landing for more delicate parcels. To take care of very fragile items, such as a case of wine, the innovative ‘Soft-Drop’ floating base can be added.

Ideal for apartments, the Brizebox modular design can be stacked and bolted together in communal areas or built into walls of new-builds.

Can be stacked and bolted together

Brian continued: “With regards to looks, this was also quite challenging - but we’re pleased to have come up with a design that’s got visual appeal and is something you’d want outside your house, not tucked around the corner.
“Additionally, whilst not claiming to be eco-friendly tree huggers, we think Brizebox has very green credentials. The co2 footprint created by an undeliverable parcel going backwards and forwards between its final destination and the parcel depot, is incalculable. It is reassuring to know that by using a Brizebox your parcel is delivered first time, every time, and contributing to saving the planet.”

Can be built into walls
Brizebox is a unique invention and has hit the ground running with products currently available in the UK, Europe, USA and Canada. Plans are also underway to expand to Australia and New Zealand.

For more information about Brizebox visit www.brizebox.com

Germany, The Birthplace of the Automobile, to be Honoured on The London to Brighton Run

1904 Mercedes on the Bonhams Veteran Car Run

This year’s Veteran Car Run will be a tribute to the country that put the world on wheels.

In 1886, exactly 130 years ago, Karl Benz presented his Patent-Motorwagen to the world. A three-wheeled machine with a rear-mounted single-cylinder engine developing less than 1hp, it is widely regarded as the world’s first purpose-designed automobile.

At about the same time, and no more than 60 miles away, Gottlieb Daimler was also working on an automobile. His first car was an adapted horse-drawn carriage and appeared just a couple of months later. These two German engineers had stolen a march in the rest of the world, their creations starting a genuine revolution in personal mobility.

To mark this significant milestone in the history of the car, this year’s Bonhams Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox – the world’s longest running motoring event – will have a German flavour.

1898 Benz Dogcart in Brighton

Among the 400-plus entries taking part in the the Royal Automobile Club event are 14 German-made cars, including examples of long forgotten marques such as Adler, Delin and Cudell which will be joined by a number of Benz and Mercedes cars.

Among these are a Benz Victoria and a Benz Phaeton, both from 1898, entered by the Allgemeiner Schnauferl Club, one of the world’s earliest motoring clubs, which was founded in 1900.

And the Mercedes-Benz Museum is also joining in the celebration by entering two of its motoring pioneers on the Run – a 1901 Benz Spider and a 1902 Mercedes Simplex.

Mercedes Benz Classic entry Benz Spider

This year’s Run marks the 120th anniversary of the first ‘Emancipation Run’ from London to Brighton, which was held in November 1896. It marked the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act which raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the need for the vehicles to be preceded by a man carrying a red flag.

As tradition dictates, the Run – which has been organised by the Royal Automobile Club since 1930 – will take place on the first Sunday on November, which this year falls on the 6th. More than 400 three- and four-wheelers – all built before 1905 – will take part in the Run.

Mercedes Benz Classic entry Mercedes Simplex

The Run is just one element of the Royal Automobile Club’s London Motor Week – a seven-day celebration of motoring, which includes an art exhibition, motoring heritage lectures, a motoring forum and a motoring books awards evening.

The penultimate event in the week is the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show, on Saturday 5th November, which turns London’s premier shopping street into a motoring showcase that puts the spotlight on veterans and moderns alike. Then just before 7am on Sunday 6th November the Club’s premier event, the 120th anniversary Bonhams Veteran Run supported by Hiscox, gets underway.

Organised by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the awards are designed to identify and reward excellence in the specification of architectural ironmongery in residential and commercial buildings, public sector health and education buildings, hospitality buildings such as hotels, and international projects outside the UK and Ireland.

Architects, specifiers, building contractors, clients and their architectural ironmongery advisers and suppliers across the world can nominate projects for the 2016/17 awards from now until 28 October 2016.

The winners will be announced at a prestigious luncheon at the RIBA headquarters in Portland Place, London on 30 March next year.

Maria Powell, president of the GAI, says:
“The Specification Awards show architectural ironmongery at its beautiful best, enhancing not only the security, accessibility and fire safety of the building, but also adding to its functionality and longevity.
“These awards are also unique because they reward the whole specification team, highlighting the importance of the professional partnership between architects and architectural ironmongers.
“We have seen outstanding projects coming to completion in the UK and overseas over the past couple of years, so I’m going to be very excited to see the calibre of nominations this year.”

For each category in the awards there will be a winner, second and third place. The judges will also decide on an overall ‘winner of winners’. This award in 2015 went to Tate Britain, with architectural ironmongers Allgood and architect Caruso St John jointly scooping the top prize. A brochure showing all the 2014/15 winners can be downloaded from the GAI website.

There is no limit to the number of entries to the 2016/17 awards. The first entry from a GAI or RIBA member is free of charge.
