2017 gate safety campaign - school partner required

Safety campaigners are once again mounting a high profile drive to reduce the risks posed by unsafe automated gates. And this time school children will be playing a critically important role.

The DHF (Door & Hardware Federation), the trade association which represents the automated gate industry, is looking for a school to be the “face” of this year’s Gate Safety Week campaign. The school will help spearhead the campaign to other schools in the UK.

The aim of Gate Safety Week, which has been run every year since 2014, is to raise awareness of the dangers posed by incorrectly installed and poorly maintained automated gates.

Increasingly, automated gates are becoming a common sight on residential driveways, housing and apartment developments and industrial and commercial locations. Evermore so, automated gates are being installed in schools and educational buildings.

Through its training programme, Technical Specifications, and collaborative working, the DHF has seen an improvement in the quality of installations as well as the knowledge of installers throughout the UK. However, the DHF estimates that there are still up to 70% of automated gate installations which are unsafe, many of which would have been installed pre-2010.

Said Bob Perry, DHF CEO:
“There is still a lot of work to do to lower that figure even more. Promoting the Gate Safety Week initiative to the education sector is just the beginning. We want to educate the educators, who will then educate the populace. Each year we call upon leading manufacturers, installers, and maintainers of automated gates to support our crusade, which they do willingly.”

"The Gate Safety Week campaign will run throughout 2017"

Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens, DHF Marketing Manager, stated:
“Gate safety is an on-going year-round commitment, so we decided to extend our week to a rolling year! As always, it will culminate in a week of activity during October. We have had tremendous support previously and urge more to join our campaign in raising awareness, but more importantly, in making gates safe.”

The campaign is starting off with an appeal to schools to run a competition amongst pupils to design a poster on the theme: Safe Gates Save Lives. Once the successful school has been chosen, the competition will start at the beginning of the summer term with entries being submitted by the beginning of June.

The winning pupil will receive a prize and the successful school will win a quantity of art supplies. The winning poster will be used in a high-profile publicity campaign in the run up to Gate Safety Week 2017.

The poster will help educate the school, the parents, and the children on safety around automated gates, with the intention of rolling it out to all schools within the UK.

“It’s vital that all automated gates - wherever their location - have been installed in accordance with the latest industry code of practice governing safety,” added Bob Perry.

“Our campaign will strengthen the message that automated gates in schools, public buildings and all other locations must be checked by qualified and trained engineers for safe operation and be maintained regularly.”

To find out how gates can be checked for safety, and to learn more about the 2017 campaign, visit www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk.

Schools wanting to enter the competition should contact Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens, DHF Marketing Manager, on 01827 52337 or email patricia@dhfonline.org.uk for further information.

Bottoms up: Henderson Introduces Bottom Rolling Hardware for Timber Folding Doors

P C Henderson is pleased to announce the launch of its much anticipated Securefold Bottom Rolling hardware – a folding door solution that carries the load of the doors at the bottom of the system, removing the need for major structural building support.

Designed for timber framed exterior doors, the new hardware is ideal for applications where top hung structural support is often lacking such as in conservatories, extensions, orangeries and outbuildings. Securefold Bottom Rolling allows P C Henderson to cater for a much more niche type of market where perhaps product options for end users are slightly limited.

As well as utilising advanced bottom rolling technology, the system also features some further innovative design elements, including the roller being purposefully situated directly underneath the door making it barely visible when the doors are closed. Eliminating the need for an often restricting upper beam also frees up design space – a feature which may be of particular interest to architects and designers.

Fergus Pickard, Product Development Director at P C Henderson, comments:
“We are delighted to be able to bring a product such as Securefold Bottom Rolling to the market. The system can be used in both residential and commercial properties and is extremely easy to install as it uses pre-existing components from the Securefold range, one of our most popular products which is familiar to many of our customers.
“The product also has the advantage of requiring very little ongoing maintenance which is a huge benefit to the end user. Due to the weight of the door being carried at the bottom of the system rather than the top, any natural building movements that occur over time will have minimal effect on the door position - reducing the need for adjustments and installer visits.”
Securefold Bottom Rolling presents a huge growth opportunity for joiners, distributors and installers looking to expand their offering and enter into new markets. For instance, the home improvement market which includes new extensions and replacements, is expected to grow 7 percent per annum between 2016 and 2020. Additionally, timber as a frame material has increased its market share to over 20 percent as consumers prioritise aesthetics and sustainability above cost[1].

The cleverly designed system is perfect for new builds as well as retrofitting onto existing properties. It caters for timber framed doors measuring a maximum of 3000mm x 1000 mm x 68mm (H x W x D), with a maximum weight of 80kg. Its components feature sophisticated technology that provides users with a smooth fingertip operation.

Made from Marine Grade 316 stainless steel for enhanced weather and corrosion resistance, it is available with a variety of different hinge options and 4 different colour finishes including satin, polished chrome, PVD black and gold.

P C Henderson’s online Expert Specification Tool is available to help with specifying sliding or folding door projects of any nature with detailed digital brochures available for download from its new website. For more information and to see the wide variety of sliding and folding door systems on offer, visit www.pchenderson.com

ACT in Store with ASDA

CBES have installed IP access control systems from ACT at Asda stores and distribution centres across the UK. The roll-out has already covered 500 sites all of which are networked to Asda’s corporate headquarters in Leeds.

Asda are benefiting from ACTpro 4000 two-door controllers which can extend to 16 doors via ACTpro door stations. In turn, up to 250 of the controllers can be networked via a PC interface. The ACT hardware offers low bandwidth and auto-discovery for easy installation and maintenance, alongside features such as timed anti-passback and counting areas.

The Asda sites are using ACT’s software platform, ACTpro Enterprise, which distinguishes between different user types such as installer, security guard or system administrator so as to factor out accidental system changes and minimise maintenance. ACTpro Enterprise gives users a familiar web-browser experience using hyperlinks, ‘backwards’ and ‘forwards’ buttons and powerful search functionality.

Typically, an Asda staff member might present their MIFARE contactless smart card to a reader in order to access a secure area of the site. The ACT software then grants or denies access according to the user’s privileges which can be defined according to seniority, job profile, time of day and day of the week.

Asda managers are benefiting from integration of access control with CCTV and intercoms through use of the Sky-Walker Integration Platform from Belgian developer Entelec which manages disparate data types to provide a true PSIM system.

At a large site such as a distribution centre, a staff member seeking an access privilege outside their user profile in terms of location or time of day might identify themselves through intercom and receive instructions. Similarly, the Entelec software can trigger CCTV recording in an unusual situation.

Rob Cox of CBES, said:
“The main benefits for Asda are central monitoring from headquarters and integration of access control with CCTV and any other IP-enabled building management system in use at the stores. Crucially, the ACT software has allowed uniformity by being able to function with Asda’s existing smart cards. This has produced both financial and time savings in terms of the intrinsic value of the cards themselves and the avoidance of any re-keying of data.”
CBES operate in construction, security, mechanical & electrical and risk management. The company has also installed ACT access control systems at the £225m Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Kent.

The CBES security systems division uses disciplines such as access control, CCTV, perimeter protection, intruder detection and security tagging. As well as retail and healthcare, the division is active in education and the automotive industry. CBES has won many RoSPA awards, is NACOSS Gold certificated and holds relevant BSI/ISO certification in all its operational areas.

Integrated Technologies are the Key

An integration of cutting edge biometric recognition technology and key management systems is offering the very highest levels of security for organisations managing large number of priority keys.

The system is the result of co-operation between ievo Ltd, the Newcastle-based manufacturer of biometric recognition systems, and Keytracker Ltd, the Midlands manufacturer of key management systems.

Andy Smith, General Manager of Keytracker, explained: “We’ve developed our restricted key access systems for a huge variety of sectors ranging from the construction, engineering, property, education and health sectors to the automobile retail trade – anywhere where access to vehicles, plant or different areas is controlled by physical keys. By combining these systems with ievo’s biometric recognition technology and the corresponding software, we have created an ultra-secure solution that ensures and tracks the release of specific keys to specific people.

“The resultant Restricted Key Access System incorporates state-of-the-art hardware with easy to operate administration software restricting access to only those keys the user is authorised to use. The integration of the ievo ultimate™ finger print readers ensure that the potential for fraudulent access via stolen swipe cards or pin codes is completely removed whilst the registration process has been integrated into the existing software allowing direct and simple user control and saving both the end user and installer time and money.

“We’re already talking to potential clients within healthcare, where areas like drug storage must be kept under strict control, logistics and construction where only licensed personnel are allowed access to specific vehicles and plant, but the possibilities are endless.”

Richard Forsyth, UK Sales Manager of ievo Ltd, added: “We’re delighted to be working with Keytracker to provide the ultimate in key access security systems. By the addition of our biometric recognition system, we’ve created an additional level of security to accessing keys for a variety of purposes. Operators can now very easily establish access to specific keys and the track this for external security and internal administrative purposes.”

ievo ultimate readers use an advanced sensor which employs multispectral imaging (MSI) technology to scan and capture data, using multiple light sources to read not only the surface of the skin, but also data points from the subsurface level (up to 4mm deep) of a finger. The different light sources can penetrate levels of moisture and debris present on the skin to read data points below.

This advanced method allows for a high number of uniquely identifiable data points to be recognised and used for a more accurate, reliable and efficient verification process. The readers are also designed for both external and internal use and are equipped with an internal thermostat controlled heater allowing them to operate in conditions as low as -20˚C and, being IP65 rated, they also function in levels of heavy rain.

Background information on the two companies:

ievo Ltd is a leading designer and manufacturer of world class biometric recognition systems based in the North East of the UK. Offering full integration options, ievo Ltd provides a safe, secure and reliable biometric solution for the access control market.

Established in 1996, Midlands based, Keytracker Ltd, produces the largest range of key and equipment management solutions, designed to securely manage, track, and control access to keys and equipment. School Security Is No Longer A Luxury, It’s A Must

School leaders and authorities need to make building security the No. 1 priority, says Simon Osborne, commercial leader of safety and security company Allegion.

It’s easy to think that school shootings, massacres and violence are associated purely with our neighbours across the pond. In the U.S., gun culture and high-profile cases – like a recent one at Ohio State University and the deadly 2007 Virginia Tech shooting that claimed 32 lives – are given global attention because of their prevalence. In fact, according to an article by Justin Carissimo published in the October 2015 issue of The Independent, school shootings in the U.S. were taking place once per week on average.

While this kind of school violence hasn’t been common in the UK, and guns are much harder to access compared to the U.S., we still must be vigilant with our school security as the reality of these situations is that they can happen anywhere at any time. No country or community is exempt.

Indeed, the course of our own history can vouch for this. The deadliest shooting in a UK school was the Dunblane School Massacre of 1996, where 16 children and one teacher tragically lost their lives after a gunman walked onto school premises and opened fire. In the same year, a man plagued by paranoid schizophrenia gained access to St. Luke’s Church of England infants’ school in Wolverhampton, where he managed to injure three children and four adults in an attack.

The saying is that history has a habit of repeating itself, and it’s done so recently. School teacher Ann Maguire was murdered by a knife-wielding student in 2014 as she was teaching a Spanish class. In November 2016, a 15-year-old student was stabbed by a group of people who had entered his school in Birmingham. What if, in both of these tragic cases, the attackers had intended to do more?

It’s cases like all of these that highlight just how easy it is for would-be attackers to gain access into our current school buildings with minimal effort. It is also why we, as both the industry and the authorities, should make it our collective duty to prevent attackers gaining access, or lessen the damage they can do should they make it onto school premises.

Timed Access

Access control solutions are now widely available in the door hardware market with a wide range of functionality. One of the most useful functions for schools, though, is the ability to permit entry during a designated period of time, and then lockdown those entrances automatically after that period of time has passed.

In effect, this means that when teachers and pupils are going in and out of schools during mornings, breaks and lunch times, entry points are opened automatically and locked to outsiders after.

Remote Lockdown Systems

One of the most difficult parts of being a school caretaker or facilities manager is locking down entry points, simply because of the sheer amount that there could be to a school.

To minimise the chances of unwanted intrusion, schools would benefit from having a central electronic remote locking system. Access control solutions can now be linked to all doors within a building and locked at the touch of a button. Control can also be given to other users within the building, so that responsibility can be divided between teachers, maintenance staff and office staff, if need be.

Latchbolt Monitors

External security doors need to engage properly to be effective at stopping would-be intruders getting through. However, pupils often leave doors ajar or not latched fully, either because they haven’t been taught to close the doors or, perhaps for younger children, they don’t have the strength to close them.

A simple fix for this situation is to use latchbolt monitors. These work by sending a signal to a central monitoring station, giving confirmation of when the door is shut and secure.

Electronic Panic Exits

Panic exits have long been purely mechanical to allow users safe and secure exit from a building in a state of emergency and, combined with an outside access device, to provide a simple means of accessing the door externally. However, there are now electromechanical exit devices on the market that can integrate with electronic access control systems to allow monitored safe and secure access.

One of the latest innovations is the Briton 571 EL panic bar, which utilises an electronic motor to operate the door lock. This means the device is able to work with digital access control systems from the outside, but also operate as a mechanical panic bar from within the building.

Effectively, this makes the panic exit points safer and more secure as you can add access control measures to those points, whether it is for pupils, teachers or both.

Delay No More

Understandably, security often falls to the bottom of the pecking order when budget and priorities are discussed on the UK school estate. Unlike our neighbors in the U.S., high-profile school violence cases on our shores are few and far between. Ultimately, this results in less awareness and importance placed on this issue.

However, we should not wait for a next occurrence to take action; it may be too little too late. A 2016 article by The Telegraph’s education editor, Javier Espinoza, noted there’s been a 90-percent increase in knives being brought to school by children. Unquestionably, the chances of seeing a victim, or even multiple victims, are now higher than ever before. The problem may not be a question of “if,” but “when.”

Trimec Migrates into Union

UNION, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, has announced that the high-quality Trimec range will be migrated into its product portfolio from March 2017.

The move further strengthens UNION’s product range, allowing the company to broaden its range of mechanical locking solutions into electromechanical strikes, offering the customer a complete door hardware package.

Bringing together two market leading brands means UNION can concentrate its R&D efforts, setting the foundation for a more extensive range of electromechanical products to be added to the company’s portfolio over the coming years.

Eryl Jones, Managing Director of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, explains:
“Specialising in electric strikes and an impressive range of patented electromechanical technologies since 1990, Trimec has established a reputation for itself as a leading provider of superior electromechanical locking solutions. This reputation will continue under UNION.
“The benefits to this are three-fold. Firstly, it means customers have access to a one-stop shop for door hardware solutions. Secondly, it allows us to consolidate our R&D activities, ensuring we can continue to strengthen UNION’s product portfolio with electromechanical technologies. Finally, it means we can offer a comprehensive range of solutions for the commercial market, meeting our customers’ every need.”
Trimec will be migrated onto the UNION website in March 2017, while marketing literature will be updated throughout the year.

The Trimec range will deliver the same high-performance and reliable solutions that customers have come to expect, but simply as a product range name under the UNION brand. Trimec product codes will not be changed and customers can continue to order using the existing ones.

For further information on Trimec’s incorporation into UNION and its range of door opening solutions, please visit www.uniononline.co.uk/trimec

Bobby Davro livens up DHF’s 2017 Gala Dinner event!

Bobby Davro providing after-dinner entertainment

DHF (Door and Hardware Federation), has once again held its popular gala dinner, which took place at The Belfry on Friday 3rd March.

The event provided members, their partners and guests with the opportunity to get together for an evening of socialising, networking and fun, with comedian, Bobby Davro on hand to keep the atmosphere light.

It’s the first time that DHF has held a gala dinner since its successful event in 2014. Back by popular demand, the black tie event welcomed more than 200 guests for a champagne and canapé reception, and delicious four course meal at the Warwick Suite in one of the UK’s most recognised venues.

Bob Perry, CEO Door and Harware Federation

The event was sponsored by Robust UK, GFA UK Ltd, Novoferm UK Ltd, The Door Industry Journal, SWS UK Ltd and Beeline Promotional Products.

In addition to Bobby Davro, who delighted the audience with his very special brand of humour, guests danced the night away to popular Midlands radio DJ Ian ‘Chilly’ Chilvers, with many continuing the party at The Belfry’s on-site club, ‘Bel-Air’.

Enabling companies from all industries with the opportunity to enjoy the company of fellow DHF members and their guests, the event, which was another sell-out success, is key in bringing together business associates and DHF members in an informal setting, as DHF’s Chief Executive, Bob Perry explains:
“This year’s gala dinner was a tremendous success and once again, highlights the importance in coming together to celebrate the current successes across the industries we represent. We would very much like to thank all of our generous sponsors, without whom the evening would not have taken place; and of course, all of those who attended. We look forward to a successful year ahead.”

Jo Milne-Rowe confirmed as Vice Chair for the Institute of Architectural Ironmongers

Codelocks business development manager Jo Milne-Rowe has been announced as the new Vice Chair for the Institute of Architectural Ironmongers (IAI).

The appointment was confirmed at the IAI’s annual general meeting, held at the Casa Hotel in Chesterfield last Saturday. Jo will assume the responsibilities of Vice Chair with immediate effect.

With a wealth of experience in architectural hardware, mechanical security and electronic access control, Jo joined Codelocks last year to help the company expand into new markets.

Prior to joining Codelocks, Jo held various management roles in the architectural hardware industry. For the past 12 months, she has served as Chairman for the South East region of the IAI. During her tenure, she was recognised for her commitment to improving communication and increasing engagement amongst members.

Jo will now step down from her position of Regional Chairman and will focus on supporting the Chair across national activities. Her new responsibilities will include planning CPD programmes, organising AGMs, working to promote the institute and supporting all the IAI regional branches.

“This is a wonderful opportunity,” Jo commented. “I hope that as Vice Chair, I can play a role in changing certain perceptions about the industry and encourage the next generation of talent to seek a career in our ever-changing sector.”

Colin Campbell, Sales Director of Codelocks commented:
“Jo’s appointment to Vice Chair is fantastic news for both the IAI and for Codelocks. Her commitment to furthering our industry through education and development is highly commendable and everyone here is thrilled for her.
“The IAI provides Codelocks with a platform to better understand the needs of our market. It offers us a direct line to our peers and our customers, giving us insight into the challenges and opportunities faced in the access control industry,” he added.

Codelocks is enjoying continued organic growth and has a strong portfolio of innovative products in the pipeline. Last week, the lockmaker launched the CL4510, its latest Netcode-compatible smart lock. Over the next six months, Codelocks plans to launch three more products, giving consumers and businesses more control over access to buildings.
