Success for Weru UK Partner Network

Blackpool-based Weru UK – a distributor for Weru (Germany’s market leader in windows and doors) is celebrating the success of their UK Network, which has seen significant uptake nationwide.

The Weru UK Network sees accredited partners who are fully vetted and trained to the highest standards, offering developers and home owners in a specific catchment area, a complete windows and doors solution.

In addition to existing Weru partners like WeruWise in Sussex and Eddisbury in Cheshire, Weru UK is now seeing significant geographical expansion, notably in Scotland, the South West, North West and Staffordshire.

One of the first companies to join the Network was Abbey & Burton Glass, based in Derby and Burton-upon-Trent. Established in 1972, the firm is the region’s most experienced double-glazing company, specialising in the manufacture of conservatories, supplying a wide range of window and door solutions across Staffordshire.

Glen Batchelor, Sales Director at Abbey & Burton Glass explains,
“The introduction of the exclusive Weru range was a natural progression for Abbey Glass as we wished to service the increasing demand for premium high performance triple glazing. We are proud to be combining 21st century German engineering with a traditional company that prides itself on its good old-fashioned values.”

Located in Stirling, Scotland, Lifestyle Glass Design joined the Network to further enhance their offering of premium windows and doors which are available alongside the firm’s extensive range of glass rooms, awnings, verandas and curtain walling.

Ian Ross from Lifestyle Glass Design said,
“We first came across Weru at an exhibition in Germany and were amazed at the choice and build quality. The timing was perfect as it coincided with Weru targeting central Scotland for suitable professional partners. The opportunity of joining the new Network was a perfect fit with our own growth plans and we are already seeing a significant number of enquiries into the Weru range.”

Weru UK was established in 1985 by Graham Lindsay who still heads up the operation alongside his daughter Kate and their professional team that have amassed significant experience in making continental windows reach their true potential within UK homes and commercial buildings.

Graham and the Weru UK team will be exhibiting at The Fit Show 2019 at The National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham (21st - 23rd May) and will be recruiting new partners for the Network.

For further information on the Weru partner network, call 01253 341444 or visit www.weru.uk

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions leads the way in Fire Door Safety

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland continues to lead the market by ensuring its range of door closers do not compromise fire safety regulations.

At the end of 2017, several UKAS Accredited authorities withdrew certification for almost all door closers used on uninsulated metal fire doors. With around eight out of 10 metal fire doors sold in the UK being non-insulated, this left many doorsets deemed non-compliant.

A number of certifications have now been reinstated, but with a caveat meaning they can only be installed on the fire risk side of a door. In many properties and locations it can be difficult to determine which side of the door is most at risk of fire, so this caveat challenges the use of many door closers on the market for installation on uninsulated metal fire doors.

Metal fire doors provide superior levels of fire performance compared with other door materials, with a fire integrity performance of four hours often possible. However, this is reliant on compatible performance from the hardware devices that enable them to satisfy industry standards and provide the door’s desired functionality

In response to the ongoing challenges and needs in the industry, ASSA ABLOY has continued with substantial testing and standardising of its door closers.

As a result, its door closers have demonstrated that use on metal fire doors is not restricted by the side of the door to which it is required to be installed and remains fully compliant with EN1634 on any uninsulated metal fire door. With no caveats attached to the series, this takes away a huge risk of error in the design, manufacture and installation process. Furthermore, stringent testing has proved the EN1634 range dependable for up to 240 minutes of integrity.

The combination of these market leading door controls combined with premium fire doors from the Door Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland, ensures high quality solutions and uncompromised performance throughout the commercial and industrial building market in both timber and steel.

Specifying and buying the right product solution is essential for compliance and peace of mind, however, regular fire door checks are vital in maintaining a high quality performance and can highlight potential risks within a fire doorset. Ignoring or not acting on these risks once they have been highlighted can lead to huge consequences for building owners and managers, as liability rests with them.

Door Group is one of very few manufacturers to offer a complete solution of timber and metal doors, hardware and ironmongery through a ‘cradle to grave’ approach of technical specification, manufacture, installation, fire door inspections and service, and maintenance packages in support of architects, contractors, facilities managers and end users.

Using BRE-certified inspectors we can help reduce the risk to building occupants by ensuring all fire doors and their associated component parts, such as door controls, remain compliant and achieve the latest known standards. Whilst we offer impartial advice through this service, we can also help retain building compliance through upgrades, replacements and routine maintenance.

Making Beautiful Glass Doors work Beautifully

The beauty and versatility of glass makes it a popular door material choice with architects and interior designers, especially for minimalist and open plan settings where through-visibility is part of the design scheme.

Now Norseal can make those sliding, swing or automatic glass doors perform and function beautifully with a range of acoustic and fire seals that will work superbly without compromising design lines.

Architects and designers are increasingly specifying glass doors as less wood or metal means improved daylighting, unobstructed views, and a high-end, contemporary aesthetic. But sealing those glass doors has traditionally been a headache for technicians who struggle to make the door work acoustically in situ or in fire safety terms.

The visual accessibility that glass doors offer works particularly well for meeting rooms and offices, increasing the impression of space and reducing the need for artificial lighting. But providing an effective acoustic rating for a glass door requires an effective acoustic seal, a challenge on glass doors.

The Norseal range of seals for glass doors provide an effective unobtrusive acoustic sealing for standard single swing glass doors. For sliding doors and automatic sliding doors, we can provide a range of acoustic solutions that are also suitable for fire rated, smoke rated and mobility compliant glass doors.

Central to that Norseal range is the Schall-Ex® GS-H8/12 automatic drop seal, suitable for commercial grade doors with a glass thickness ranging from 8mm - 12mm. It is available in sleek silver anodised aluminium or stainless steel finish aluminium to match most glass door hardware and has a single actuation mechanism and a self-extinguishing silicone seal.

Importantly, it can achieve sound reduction up to 55dBRw making it perfect for offices, conference spaces, hotels, and residential spaces. It provides smoke and draft protection as well as giving the best possible acoustic performance for the glass door. A version is also available for retro fit to existing doors.

For more information on Norseal’s comprehensive range of fire, smoke, acoustic and weather seals, specifiers can visit www.norseal.co.uk or phone 01661 830088.

Priory Launches the Ultradoor

The Priory Shutter & Door Co. Ltd, the West Midlands-based roller shutter door specialist, has long been recognised as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of industrial, commercial and domestic roller shutters.

The firm is pushing back boundaries once more with a new product range – the Ultradoor Hybrid Commercial Roller Shutter.

This range combines aluminium roller garage door frameworks, with a choice of commercial curtains. This is a less complicated commercial roller shutter option, which merges the relative ease of a roller garage door installation with the strength needed for commercial openings, through an aesthetically pleasing product that’s ideal for high-end applications.

The framework consists of 90mm x 34mm aluminium guide channels with integrated double brush seals, pre-cast aluminium head plates, and a two-part pre-formed aluminium canopy.

The choice of commercial curtains ranges from traditional 3” galvanised steel lath (solid, perforated or punched for vision) to 89mm heavy-duty aluminum lath, and aluminium tube and link grilles for specific or bespoke requirements.

A special Ultralath - an alternative to the traditional roller shutter lath - is also available, which is rolled from a thinner gauge of steel, making it lighter, more cost-effective and eco-friendlier, whilst retaining its strength due to its work hardened construction.

A simplified manufacturing process makes Ultradoor quicker to make than a traditional roller shutter - thus suiting tight installation schedules. The doors can be polyester powder coated to any RAL or BS colour, ensuring they merge perfectly with the surroundings they sit aside.

The shutters are driven by a single-phase (240v) tubular motor, with a host of control options - from a key switch to a Somfy Rollixo remote control receiver with wireless optical safety edge, allowing for integration into Somfy wireless and smart control solutions.

Simon Perks - General Manager at Priory, commented:
“When speaking to our customers about the advantages of our domestic roller garage doors, we hear the same comments time and time again – that they look good, and are quick and easy to install.
“The idea behind the Ultradoor concept was to put these virtues into a commercial application. Obviously, in a commercial setting, security is paramount - thus combining a range of robust curtain solutions with a simplistic and aesthetically pleasing framework, offered our customers a unique and versatile product.
“As a quality door, at an affordable price, that’s always delivered on time - it ticks all the boxes, and the range is going from strength to strength!”

To find out more about Priory products – call 0121 558 6406, email sales@priory-group.co.uk, or visit www.priory-group.co.uk.

British Speed in Italy: Bentley Marks Centenary with Mille Miglia Run

In 1930 the legendary Bentley Blower was due to become the first British car to compete in the Mille Miglia race.

Despite the best efforts of ‘Bentley Boys’ Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin and then-CEO Woolf Barnato, this attempt was aborted prior to the race commencing as the gentlemen felt there was a lack of preparation to complete a successful run. Nine decades later, Bentley is returning to the historic race to finish what the ‘Bentley Boys’ didn’t.

Birkin and Barnato were to be the first British drivers to attempt the thousand-mile Italian test of endurance, in a supercharged ‘Bentley Blower’ known as the No.2 ‘Birkin Blower’. According to contemporary media reports, however,“much disappointment was felt at the news of the Bentley withdrawal from the Brescia Thousand Miles Race”.

This year, two original 1930 4½-litre supercharged Blowers (the ‘Birkin Blower’ UU5872 and the ‘Demonstrator’ GH6951) are aiming to finish what the ‘Bentley Boys’ didn’t, taking on the world-renowned cross-country route between May15 and 18. The Blowers will be driven by Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Brian Gush, and Head of Royal and VIP Relations, Robin Peel. They will be closely followed by a Bentayga –the world’s most luxurious SUV-capturing every moment of this landmark occasion.

Bentley Chairman and Chief Executive, Adrian Hallmark, said:
“While Birkin and Barnato were ultimately unsuccessful in their attempt to take on the Mille Miglia in 1930, their entry 89 years ago enables us to bring together one of the world’s most iconic pre-war racers and one of its most iconic motoring events. And we take the ‘Bentley Boy’ spirit with us in this centenary-year run.”

Blower Bentley –An Enduring Legacy

The Blowers feature their original Vanden Plas Open Sports Four-Seat body. They were described by Autocar magazine in September 1930 as having “the appeal of immense power, linked with great docility”–qualities the team will be hoping to exploit in Italy.

The Bentley 4½ Litre was nearing the end of its development cycle by 1928, as other manufacturers finally began to catch up with the innovative W.O. Bentley’s superlative engine design. W.O.’s response was to increase the engine capacity, and his 6½ Litre model won Le Mans in 1929 and 1930.

However, racing driver Sir Henry Birkin wanted to apply anew supercharger to the engine of the existing 4½ Litre car instead. To W.O.’s displeasure, Birkin persuaded Bentley’s new owner and chairman, fellow Bentley Boy and British financier Woolf Barnato, to build him five supercharged Blowers for the racetrack.

And to meet the racing rules of the era, 50 production Blower Bentleys were built for the road too – all featuring the legendary supercharger installation developed by Amherst Villiers.

Inspired by a Racing Legend: Continental Number 9 Edition by Mulliner

Bentley has created the ultimate collector’s version of the all-new Continental GT to celebrate the company’s centenary in 2019.

The Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner features a wood insert from the seat of Birkin’s iconic 1930 No. 9 Le Mans race car, which was removed during a sympathetic renovation. This backlit piece is set in resin and situated in the middle of the centre dial of the rotating display, adding a piece of history to each car.

Each of the 100 cars also features the choice of Cumbrian Green or Beluga heritage hides, unique engine spin finish to the dashboard, 18K gold plated organ stops inspired by those in the No.9 ‘Blower’ and ‘1 of 100’ treadplates.

Bentley’s Centenary –100 Years of Extraordinary

In 1919 Walter Owen (W.O.) Bentley created a company with a simple objective: to build “a fast car, a good car, the best in its class”. This guiding
principle has driven Bentley ever since, pushing the brand forward and making it the leader in automotive luxury around the world today.

The 10th of July 2019 marks Bentley’s 100th year. This extraordinary milestone –reached by only a special few companies –will be a cause for celebration of the company’s history and its global success today.

For more information on the Mille Miglia read on or visit www.1000miglia.it

The Mille Miglia was an open-road, motorsport endurance race which took place in Italy twenty-four times from 1927 to 1957 (thirteen before the war, eleven from 1947). In 1977 it was reborn as a regularity race for classic and vintage cars. Participation is limited to cars, produced no later than 1957, which had attended (or were registered in)the original race. The route (Brescia–Rome round trip) is similar to that of the original race, maintaining the point of departure/arrival in Viale Venezia in Brescia.

BSI invites input to the review of its fire performance of external cladding systems standards

The public consultation process for the revision of the existing fire performance of external cladding systems standards, BS 8414 – Part 1: Test method for non-loadbearing external cladding systems applied to the masonry face of a building, and Part 2: Test method for non-loadbearing external cladding systems fixed to and supported by a structural steel frame -  is now open.

Views are being sought on these voluntary standards from all interested parties including industry practitioners, regulators, fire safety specialists and consumer organizations. The consultation for Part 1 is open until 8 July 2019 and comments can be submitted online at:

BS 8414–1: https://standardsdevelopment.bsigroup.com/projects/2019-01079
BS 8414-2: https://standardsdevelopment.bsigroup.com/projects/2019-01080

Part 1: Test method for non-loadbearing external cladding systems applied to the masonry face of a building

BS 8414-1 provides a test method for determining the fire performance characteristics of non-loadbearing external cladding systems, rainscreen overcladding systems and external wall insulations systems when applied to the face of a buildings and exposed to an external fire under controlled conditions.

The fire exposure is representative of an external fire source or a fully-developed (post-flashover) fire in a room, venting through an opening such as a window aperture that exposes the cladding to the effects of external flames, or from an external fire source.

The standard does not cover the performance of glass within glazed window openings nor does it apply to curtain walling systems.

Part 2: Test method for non-loadbearing external cladding systems fixed to and supported by a structural steel frame

BS 8414-2 provides a test method for determining the fire performance characteristics of non-loadbearing external cladding systems fixed to and supported by a structural steel frame when exposed to an external fire under controlled conditions.

The fire exposure is representative of an external fire source or a fully-developed (post-flashover) fire in a room venting through an opening such as a window aperture that exposes the cladding to the effects of external flames or from an external fire source.

The standard does not apply to non-loadbearing external rainscreen overcladding systems or external wall insulation systems applied to the face of a building as these are covered by BS 8414-1. It also doesn’t cover the performance of glass within glazed window openings nor exposure to radiant heat from a fire in an adjacent building.

The principal changes proposed to both parts of the standard are:
Amendment to 6.0 Test specimen regarding criteria of the test specimen
A new paragraph added to 6.2 Dimensions of the test specimen
Expansion of 9.0 Post-test examination
Expansion of 10.0 Test report

In December 2018 the government introduced an amendment to the English Building Regulations effectively prohibiting the use of combustible cladding on residential buildings over 18 metres high.

However, BSI has proceeded with the revision of BS 8414-1 and BS 8414-2 as these important voluntary standards may still be utilized for other situations to show compliance with the Building Regulations. In addition, a number of countries around the world use them to test the fire performance of external cladding systems.

Garador Enhances Range with New GRP Up & Over and Side-Hinged Doors

Leading garage door manufacturer Garador has enhanced its GRP range of garage doors by adding 8 new up and over garage doors and 4 new side hinged doors to ensure the widest choice possible for discerning home owners.

The doors now come in a choice of 19 colour finishes, from traditional wood shades to fresh new finishes including anthracite grey, red and blue and subtle Irish oak and honey beach, adding real style to any house.

The surface finish of the timber effect GRP doors vary depending on the shade chosen; some designs come in close grain which gives the appearance of a carefully sanded wood whilst wide grain has a more rustic character. Certain doors are available with a matching chassis.

Garador’s  Premier GRP doors are provided with a flow-coat to the inside face for a smoother finish and reduced translucency.

Neil Discombe, managing director of Garador, says:
“With their great looks, durability and easy maintenance, our GRP doors have always been hugely popular. We are delighted we can now offer this extended range of styles to ensure everyone can find the perfect door for their build. With key price points and now with so many design options, we know this door will continue to be a top favourite across the country.”

The long life and low maintenance of Garador’s GRP doors are combined with quality of manufacture and inherent built in strength. The GRP doors are made as an infill and then fixed into a rigid box section chassis to provide a very stable door construction that will not twist or warp.

With the side hinged GRP doors, the colour range has also been extended and are now available in a total of 19 different finishes. These doors, so useful when personal access is often needed into the garage, can also an exciting new style to a home and, in low maintenance GRP, will continue to offer fresh looks for a long long time.
