Yale puts its Capabilities to the Test with a New Large Scale Testing Rig

Bigger and better than ever before, Yale’s all new commercial test rig opens the way for superior capabilities, smarter testing and greater opportunities.

In an age of increasing fenestration scale, where glazing products are becoming bigger and developments and renovations are getting larger and more unique with architect flare, the industry must keep up with the ever changing demands of window and door hardware.

Using its new super scale testing rig, Yale is able to ensure customers of the durability, capability and compliance of its products. When used in endurance testing, Yale can now monitor the load with each and every cycle – allowing the team to measure the operating force of products during testing.

With improved testing capabilities, comes better opportunities – and now with the ability to conduct mockup tests with an adjustable vent and frame mechanism for unique window designs, Yale is undertaking a higher volume of larger-scale projects.

The test rig enables indicative testing on project specific opening vents, with the ability to tip the rig into any inclined position between vertical and +/- 20 degrees, and tailor the test to represent a particular building or project, no matter how obscure.

Enquiries are already coming in from Europe, China and the Americas, as Yale invite its worldwide customer base to test the performance of their windows and hardware.

Testing for almost all international certifications and standards, the rig ensures products are compliant to British Standard BS6375, America’s AAMA and China’s JG/T 433 certifications.

Grant Stratford, Technical Director at Yale, comments:
“We are so pleased to be able to expand our testing facilities to meet the ever-growing needs of our customers. The capabilities of the new rig mean we can test all sorts of weird and wonderful window designs. For example, we are endurance testing a triangular mock-up vent at the moment, which is being carried out to the customer’s unique requirements.
“Here at Yale, we aim to provide the best possible product and service for our customers. The capabilities of our new commercial test rig allow us to become more flexible and provide even better customer service than before, therefore giving customers peace of mind that products have been tried and tested with the upmost accuracy and credibility – specific to a certain project or application.”

Another Step to Defeating Workplace Infections

DoorPedL™ in use on a latched door (DP02)

DoorPedL™, an innovation from Selo, has been developed to allow doors to be opened and closed hands-free. Helping to create safer and more hygenic environments for offices, schools, hospitals and other buildings.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) believes that hand transmission is the major cause of the coronavirus infection. Therefore, eliminating the use of using door handles in buildings is the best way to avoid cross contamination.

Hans Purdom, Managing Director of Selo, the inventors of DoorPedL™, says:
“We are really excited to be launching the DoorPedL™ range. These products will help prevent the spread of infection in a number of different buildings, creating safer spaces to help get people back to work and education.”

The foot plates allow unlatched doors to be opened using just a foot have been on the market for some time, but DoorPedL’s™ major innovation also enables latched doors to be opened and closed by stepping on a footplate.

DoorPedL™ is available in two variants; one for unlatched doors (DP01) and latched doors (DP02). DP01 is available in white, black or stainless steel, and DP02 is available in stainless steel. Special colours are also available for larger orders.

Both products are manufactured using 3mm folded steel for extra strength and durability and are shipped with fixings, installation instructions, mounting templates and signage.

DoorPedL™ is simple to install and can be achieved with only basic DIY competence.

Selo, based in Milton Keynes were established in 2008 and are leaders in the manufacture and distribution of commercial interior doors, riser door, pocket doors and other concealed door frames.

Choosing the Right Door is not Always Straight Forward

When it comes to choosing doors for a customer or a new project, there are various factors for tradespeople to consider.

Whether it’s the variety of choices available or the quality, aesthetics or functions of the products, choosing the right door isn’t always as straight forward as it seems.

In this feature, Mike Morris, Commercial Manager at XL Joinery, shares his advice on how builders and joiners can successfully recommend the best door for their project.

Standing the test of time

In this saturated market, it can be difficult for builders and joiners to identify doors that will endure and truly benefit their customers in the long term.

Tradespeople will be able to guarantee total satisfaction in the performance if they opt for doors that have gone through the round of relevant tests. Such tests include:

1. Fit testing - This is a simple test that can be used to mitigate instances of hardware causing doors to fail on site. A fit test includes checking several different factors including the trimming tolerance and lock block positions, the required hardware cut-outs and the ease of working and screw retention.

2. Finish testing - If you choose an unfinished door, it is important for the finishes to be tested to ensure that the desired outcome is gained. This involves checking that the finishes are in line with the manufacturer’s fitting instructions. This test also has the ability to highlight occurring issues such as changes in veneer colour and the adhesion of finishing products.

3. Bath testing - You can learn a lot about the quality of an external door by lipping and siliconing the edge before submerging one under 20ml of water.

Whilst tests should be carried out over one week, faults usually become apparent within just 48 hours, revealing any weaknesses in glazing and panel seals, as well as poor joint and veneer adhesion.

4. Cross-section testing - Cutting various sections through the door can allow you to ascertain the quality of its internal construction. This test is particularly telling when conducted after the bath test.

An option for everyone

For smaller projects, offering customers the chance to choose from a wide range of high-quality products puts them in control of their project, which in turn, puts you at the heart of its success.

By presenting a wide variety of choices to your clients, you are able to ensure that a customer’s personal preference is met. Giving options that cover different price points is also key unless the customer has already provided a budget for their doors. Often, ranges have different price tiers within them so, even if a specific look is desired, there may be multiple ways to achieve this.

Quality over quantity

Another key aspect for builders and joiners to consider is quality. Selecting the very best, premium quality doors not only helps with the fitting but also helps grow a trusted relationship with a client. Therefore, it is crucial for you to check the products you’re using before recommending them to your customers.

Different door designs offer different performance characteristics at various price points. As the most traditional and beneficial of all door designs, boarded doors, offer a wealth of long-term benefits due to their solid construction, which their counterparts might not be able to match.

For this reason, it is important for you to evaluate their chosen door design and construction before fitting.

The three most popular constructions of a door are solid or laminated wood, solid core, and hollow core. Whilst they can all look similar on the outside, the performance of each can vary massively.

When we look at invisible, but essential, factors such as heat retention, hollow core doors really can’t compete. Alongside lasting between 1-60 years, solid core and solid oak doors boast superior heat retention as well as enhanced sound insulation.

However, hollow core doors offer significantly less, due to their less substantial construction.

Therefore, when selecting a door that offers multiple benefits in the long term, we would recommend opting for either solid core or solid oak. While the price point may be slightly higher, your customer could save money later down the line in energy bills and the cost of replacing lower quality, hollow core doors.

By taking all of these points into consideration, tradespeople will be able to successfully identify the right door for their project. Which in turn, will offer the customer enhanced quality, a wide range of choices, multiple aesthetics, and peace of mind that their new door will stand the test of time.

St. Modwen Park Gloucester Phase 1 completed with help from Hörmann UK

With an impressive growth strategy for 2020, St. Modwen Industrial & Logistics continues to set the pace in the industry for speculatively built logistics hubs that provide the highest standards in efficiency, quality and safety.

The recent completion of Phase 1 at St. Modwen Park Gloucester is reflective of this commitment, with the 58 acre site housing three separate units that total 174,000 sq. ft of warehouse space, one of which has already been occupied by a leading heating specialist.

As part of a £1million contract to provide logistics products for 16 different sites throughout 2019 and 2020, Hörmann UK has been a leading supplier for Phase 1 at St. Modwen Park Gloucester, providing and installing a range of its diverse loading solutions. This includes seven Level Access Doors and 13 Loading bays that feature with Dock Shelters, Dock Levellers, LED Traffic Lights and Dock Bumpers.

Located just off Junction 12 of the M5, the prime positioning of the development has seen strong initial interest from prospective clients, with the 44,861 sq. ft and 73,597 sq. ft units ready for immediate occupation. The site also has the ability to meet specific occupier requirements, with the opportunity to construct a 400,000 sq. ft ‘Built to Suit’ unit, upon request.

The first phase of the speculative development has been constructed following market demand in the area and is ideal for medium-sized industrial, manufacturing and logistics businesses looking for a national gateway.

As part of the development, Hörmann UK has supplied 13 loading bays, including nine Standard Dock Shelters and Levellers, supported by four Double Deck Dock Shelters and Double Dock Levellers. The Dock Shelters have been constructed using heavy duty galvanised steel, with collapsible scissor arm frames and rain drainage channels for optimum functionality.

The combination of single and double loading bays was chosen by St. Modwen Industrial & Logistics to attract occupiers with diverse fleets, including smaller size commercial vehicles, right through to large HGVs.

The 41mm thick insulated sectional loading bay doors feature a sensing motor that provides a safety system to halt the door if it becomes obstructed in either direction, for enhanced safety throughout the loading and unloading processes.

The Double Deck Dock Shelters also feature an up to 200mm drop to adequately facilitate the loading and unloading of lower vehicles, while the secondary electric roller blind top flaps provide an efficient seal on smaller vehicles when using the bay, minimising any potential transfer of heat loss.

Peter Davies, Development Director at St. Modwen Industrial & Logistics, said:
“St. Modwen Park Gloucester is an important strategic site for our continued delivery of high-quality industrial and logistics space. The market demand for schemes of this nature within the Gloucestershire area is high, which is evidenced with one unit already let to a leading heating specialist.
“The three high-specification warehouses have been constructed using Hörmann UK’s portfolio of products to provide our clients with the highest standards in functionality, safety and security. This is an important strategic site for our continued delivery of first class industrial and logistics spaces throughout the UK, as part of our on-going growth commitments.”

The 13 loading bays have been installed in conjunction with Hörmann UK’s Standard and Double Deck Dock Levellers, which are 6000kg rated load under regulations EN1398 and feature a 400mm and 1,000mm telescopic swing lip, respectively.

The bays have been installed in conjunction with Hörmann UK’s innovative rayon reinforced Dock Bumpers, which are constructed from recycled rubber with 15mm thick steel. The bumper pairs are designed to minimise any potential damage to the bay in the event of a vehicle making direct contact with the building.

The bays are also complemented by Hörmann UK’s LED Traffic Lights and LED Dock Lights to provide the highest standards in safety and operational efficiency. The 1,500 Dock Light system is mounted on a swivel arm to illuminate the vehicle interior, while the LED Traffic Lights signal to drivers when they can safely pull away from the bay.

Paul Tulley, Key Account Manager for Hörmann UK, said:
“Ensuring the safety of all individuals when using the loading bays is of paramount importance to both ourselves and St. Modwen Industrial & Logistics. This is why we have supplied our comprehensive range of loading solutions to St. Modwen Park Gloucester, to provide occupiers with solutions that not only increase operational efficiency, but achieves it in a safe and secure manner.
“We are working closely with St. Modwen Industrial & Logistics to deliver our innovative solutions across a range of its new developments throughout the UK in 2020 and we look forward to taking this partnership from strength-to-strength.”

Only Fully Aluminium-Bodied Aston Martin V12 Zagato in existence goes on sale

Bell Sport & Classic is delighted to offer for sale an incredibly rare, limited run Aston Martin: a one-of-one fully aluminium-bodied V12 Zagato.

Originally unveiled at the 2011 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the DB4GT Zagato, the V12 Zagato went on to win the ‘Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes’ before going into a limited production run of just 64 cars.

All V12 Zagatos are special, but the model at Bell Sport & Classic is unique. Not only is it one-of-two pre-production versions, built to tour the world as show cars for prospective clients at exclusive events, but while all other cars in the limited run feature a hand-crafted aluminium and carbon skin, this car’s body is made solely from the lightweight metal.

Owned by Aston Martin itself up until 2016, this right-hand-drive example was due to go to Zagato to form part of the design house’s own collection. However, a very special Aston Martin client – and the car’s only owner – persuaded the company to let him purchase it, and before it was delivered to him, underwent a full recommissioning.

Originally painted Titanium Grey, it was refinished in Aston Martin Racing Green and the interior retrimmed, while Aston Martin engineers are also rumoured to have fettled the 5.9-litre V12 engine to give it a little more power than the standard car’s 510bhp. Under the bonnet, it also features the original plaque denoting its pre-production model status.

Featuring design elements seen on previous cars from the Milanese carrozzeria such as the 'double-bubble' roof and short body overhangs, inside the hand-trimmed leather features the quilted Zagato motif, which is carried across the door cards and seats accompanied by a matching leather bag set. It also comes with a book detailing its recommission, further adding to its appeal.

Tim Kearns, Managing Director, Bell Sport and Classic said:
“We are very pleased to offer for sale this truly unique Aston Martin V12 Zagato. All of the cars in the limited run of 64 are, of course, very special indeed but this outstanding example is one of only two pre-production cars and the only fully aluminium-bodied model ever made.
“It has been treated to a meticulous recommissioning by Aston Martin itself and would be a wonderful addition to any collection.”

Bell Sport & Classic brings together a highly experienced world-class team to offer unrivalled expertise and authenticity across the sales, service and restoration of the world’s most revered classic and modern classic supercars, specialising in Aston Martin, Ferrari and Lamborghini.

FMB says Local Builders should be at the Heart of the Construction Industry's Recovery Plan

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is backing the launch of the Construction Leadership Council's (CLC) Industry Recovery Plan, signalling an historic opportunity to put local builders at the heart of the country’s post-coronavirus economic revival.

The Industry Recovery Plan – backed by the leading construction industry bodies, including the FMB – will restart, reset and reinvent UK construction, helping this vital sector rebuild our economy in the months and years ahead.

The Plan champions a greener recovery, growth in all communities, and a focus on quality. It will be delivered through four working groups including one on domestic repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) that the FMB will chair. The FMB will also sit on the housing working group.

Responding to the launch, Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said:
“I am determined that we build back better with small, local builders at the heart of the recovery, following the unprecedented shock of the coronavirus.
“I celebrate the fact that the UK construction industry is speaking with one voice, and that voice is calling for a sustainable future for construction, with a mandate to develop initiatives on energy retrofit to fix our leaky homes."

Berry concluded: “If we are to reach the net zero carbon target, tackle fuel poverty, and improve health we need a national retrofit strategy, and local builders are the ones to deliver this.
“The domestic RMI market collapsed overnight as lockdown measures were introduced. I want to see it reopened in every community, helping to level up as we bounce back from the pandemic.
“As we tackle our ongoing housing crisis, small builders must also be central to delivering more, better quality homes for all those who need them, including our keyworkers.”

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is a member of the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) Coronavirus Task Force. The Task Force has been working with the industry and officials in a range of Departments (BEIS, IPA, DfT, DfE and other organisations represented on the Government Construction Board) to develop the Industry Recovery Plan.

The CLC works between industry and government to identify and deliver actions supporting UK construction in building greater efficiency, skills and growth. It is co-chaired by Nadhim Zahawi MP, Minister for Business and Industry and Andy Mitchell CBE, CEO Thames Tideway.

The FMB is committed to raising quality in the construction industry and offers a free service to consumers called ‘Find a Builder’. Please visit www.fmb.org.uk.

Let the Light Flow with Stunning Steel Screens

Let the light flow with stunning steel screens

Broken-plan homes are popular as they give the appearance of more space while still maintaining separate areas. This can be often achieved through the use of internal screens.

Steel is the perfect material for these internal screens as it is strong and sturdy, and allows for plenty of natural light flow throughout the home.

A trendy steel internal door is ideal for replacing a non-load bearing wall between the living area and kitchen. It still provides two separate rooms but does not compromise on the natural light available. Although most popular between a living room and kitchen, any two spaces can be divided with steel screens.

The internal partition can be made from steel windows and steel doors to allow design flexibility and practical functionality. Door thresholds are not necessary so the finished floor is uninterrupted by the new fittings and simply leaves a perfect stylish passage for light between the two rooms.

Steel framed windows can also be used as shower screens in the bathroom, maximising the amount of natural light into the shower cubicle.  And, as weather seals can be employed to ensure a fully waterproof enclosure, it’s a great alternative to a shower curtain.

With plenty of design options available, steel windows can be used in a number of ways throughout the home. Each structure offers solidity without being overpowering and exposes more areas of the home to sun light, reducing the amount of blue light used and allowing homeowners to reap the benefits of natural light, such as improvement in productivity, a boost in Vitamin D, and a lower costing energy bill.

W20 profiles are the preferred choice when it comes to internal screens. The glazing bars are a mere 28mm wide leaving the biggest area possible for glass between them, opening up the most passages for natural light to enter a space. Internal steel screens are highly versatile and can include windows or doors up to a height of 2.4m.

Members of the Steel Window Association offer a UK wide service for the repair and replacement of various types of old metal windows, doors and screens, as well as being able to manufacture new fenestration which fully meets the requirements of the Building Regulations. Choosing an SWA member to manufacture and install your steel windows and doors ensures that you are receiving the highest standard of fabrication, installation and customer service.

For further information on the Steel Window Association, please visit www.steel-window-association.co.uk or call 020 8543 2841.

Antimicrobial Handle helps boost Active Protection Methods against Bacteria

Specifiers can now help to reduce the spread of bacteria by choosing an antimicrobial surface for door hardware.

HOPPE has developed SecuSan®, an antibacterial and antimicrobial surface for door and window handles, to help ensure high hygiene standards wherever people are present in large numbers.

SecuSan® immediately suppresses the growth of pathogens on the handle on a lasting basis. Independent tests have proved that SecuSan® reduces microbial growth by more than 99%.

Andy Matthews, head of sales at HOPPE (UK), said:
“SecuSan® is ideal for facilities managers trying to take care of high traffic buildings. In these types of buildings where there is so much to monitor and keep clean, SecuSan® helps to maintain high hygiene standards and requires minimal maintenance.
“It actively fights bacteria and fungi from the moment it is installed and is wear-free on a long term basis. This is particularly important in care homes and hospitals where residents are much more vulnerable.”

The surface can be applied to a wide range of popular HOPPE handle designs including the Amsterdam and Paris series, all available in aluminium silver and stainless steel. It is also covered by HOPPE’s 10-year operational guarantee that applies to all HOPPE door and window handles.

Good News’ Week for DHF as it announces Face-to-Face training for its Members, and new Membership Benefits…

DHF announces face-to-face training for its members, and new membership benefits
DHF's Training Academy at Tamworth

With training at the very heart of its on-going crusade for better industry standards, Tamworth-based trade association, DHF, was delighted to announce last week that it will be resuming face-to-face training sessions at its secure on-site training academy in Tamworth.

The pro-active federation was one of the first trade associations off the mark to implement online training courses to its members following ‘lockdown’, but welcoming delegates back to its Tamworth head office site, in person, is a positive sign that ‘normal life’ is restarting.

In addition, DHF has announced a ‘new member’ benefit to encourage even more members to join the more than 500 professionals already on its books. A 10% discount on the first year of membership awaits all those keen to become part of the DHF ‘family’; a welcome perk in the current COVID-19 crisis, particularly with uncertain times ahead.

“DHF continues to lead the way with its pioneering initiatives and has been unwavering in its commitment in keeping members updated in the current pandemic,” explains Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“The 10% discount represents our continuing ethos of always putting our members first. We are here for them.” The new membership incentive will be available until the end of July 2020.

In a ‘good news’ week, DHF has also announced that, from June 1st, it kick-started face-to-face training courses at its Tamworth-based head office. The federation is fortunate to have a spacious on-site training academy, at which delegates can learn safely and whilst adhering to social distancing requirements.

The association has left no stone unturned in ensuring the well-being of its training attendees, with hand sanitiser available to all, face coverings available to those who request them, and just six delegates in total on each course, in a space that usually accommodates 25.

Courses are unchanged, although the two-day course will be spread over a week, preventing the need for delegates to source overnight accommodation, presently not possible.
