FMB says Local Builders should be at the Heart of the Construction Industry's Recovery Plan

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is backing the launch of the Construction Leadership Council's (CLC) Industry Recovery Plan, signalling an historic opportunity to put local builders at the heart of the country’s post-coronavirus economic revival.

The Industry Recovery Plan – backed by the leading construction industry bodies, including the FMB – will restart, reset and reinvent UK construction, helping this vital sector rebuild our economy in the months and years ahead.

The Plan champions a greener recovery, growth in all communities, and a focus on quality. It will be delivered through four working groups including one on domestic repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) that the FMB will chair. The FMB will also sit on the housing working group.

Responding to the launch, Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said:
“I am determined that we build back better with small, local builders at the heart of the recovery, following the unprecedented shock of the coronavirus.
“I celebrate the fact that the UK construction industry is speaking with one voice, and that voice is calling for a sustainable future for construction, with a mandate to develop initiatives on energy retrofit to fix our leaky homes."

Berry concluded: “If we are to reach the net zero carbon target, tackle fuel poverty, and improve health we need a national retrofit strategy, and local builders are the ones to deliver this.
“The domestic RMI market collapsed overnight as lockdown measures were introduced. I want to see it reopened in every community, helping to level up as we bounce back from the pandemic.
“As we tackle our ongoing housing crisis, small builders must also be central to delivering more, better quality homes for all those who need them, including our keyworkers.”

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is a member of the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) Coronavirus Task Force. The Task Force has been working with the industry and officials in a range of Departments (BEIS, IPA, DfT, DfE and other organisations represented on the Government Construction Board) to develop the Industry Recovery Plan.

The CLC works between industry and government to identify and deliver actions supporting UK construction in building greater efficiency, skills and growth. It is co-chaired by Nadhim Zahawi MP, Minister for Business and Industry and Andy Mitchell CBE, CEO Thames Tideway.

The FMB is committed to raising quality in the construction industry and offers a free service to consumers called ‘Find a Builder’. Please visit www.fmb.org.uk.
