RAC makes paying for breakdown cover more flexible and affordable for small businesses

With many small businesses struggling with rising costs and economic uncertainty, the RAC has made it easier to manage spending on business-critical essentials such as breakdown cover. These new hassle-free monthly policies can be altered at any time to suit changing needs in challenging financial climate.

The RAC has become the first national breakdown provider to give its small business customers a new level of financial flexibility which allows them to spread the cost of their breakdown policies via monthly rolling contracts paid for on Direct Debit.

The move to monthly rolling contract follows the introduction last year of annual continuous card and annual Direct Debit payments for the RAC’s 12 or 24-month fixed policies which provided a convenient move away from the hassle of traditional annual invoices.

Monthly rolling contracts are designed to make the RAC’s ‘complete peace of mind’ breakdown cover as simple as possible for businesses of all sizes from sole traders to those with fleets of up to 99 vehicles.

Businesses can alter their policies at any time in line with their changing needs by adding or removing vehicles or increasing, or decreasing, their cover level. They also have the right to cancel at any time without penalty.

Nicky Brown, head of the RAC’s small business team, said:

“Working with so many small companies we know how important breakdown cover is to ensuring smooth and efficient business operation every day, but we are also very aware in such difficult economic times that many may want to alter this according to their changing needs.

“Having flexible rolling monthly contracts that can be amended at any point to better manage outgoings at time of rising costs is a definite benefit for any small business. It also lessens the admin burden associated with invoices and managing cashflow.

“We believe this delivers just what small companies need in this challenging climate: a convenient way of spreading costs while still ensuring they always have the right level of cover in place to quickly get any of their vehicles moving again should they break down.”

RAC Business Breakdown cover for SMEs is available at a vehicle level – up to 99 vehicles – so any driver of specified business cars, vans, minibuses or taxis is covered, guarding the company against expensive down time and reputational damage if one of its vehicles breaks down.

Companies taking out Roadside, Recovery and At Home or Van Total RAC Small Business Breakdown policies from 13-31 May 2023 will benefit from free Battery Replace which covers the replacement and fitting of faulty batteries up to £600*.

The cost for a single car is £13.50 a month, dropping to £6 per car for fleets of 25-plus. For Van Total – which includes unlimited call-outs, recovery to anywhere in the UK, van-for-van replacement or overnight accommodation – the cost is £17 a month for a single van or £8.50 per van for fleets of 25 or more.

#AskJon at his FIT Show BSR Masterclass

With just under a week to go until FIT Show, it’s time for installers and fabricators to plan their time so they can make the most of their visit.

As well as seeing new products that exhibitors have developed in the last 12 months, visitors can get the latest and accurate information on building regulations, updates to competency rules and advice on how to stay compliant from the sole representative for glazing on Government committees, Jon Vanstone.

As Chair of the Interim Industry Competence Committee (IICC) for the Building Safety Regulator (BSR), Chair of Certass Ltd and Chair-Elect of the National Home Improvement Council, Jon Vanstone brings exclusive knowledge, information & over two decades of insight to the industry.

Jon has been invited to be part of the Business Pilot Stand at FIT Show. Visitors are encouraged to #AskJon about the new BSR, changes to competency requirements that could affect their business and any technical questions.

He will be supported by fellow Certass experts Jason Clemmitt, MD, and Thomas Jeavons, Technical Officer, who will be on-stand with Jon throughout the show.
“It’s a pleasure to be joining our friends at Business Pilot at this year’s show,” says Jon. “It allows their customers, partners, Certass members and other visitors to get information first-hand concerning the specific skills, knowledge, experience, and culture expectations from the Industry Competence Committee (ICC) and BSR.”
“I’ll be available to chat with visitors on the Business Pilot stand throughout the show and deliver a BSR Masterclass on Tuesday and Wednesday at noon. I’ll run you through a short presentation with the key information on BSR, followed by a live Q&A.”
Jon’s industry expertise also forms part of the FIT Show seminar programme, as he features on ‘Driving Consumer Confidence Through Competency: A Panel Debate’, which is scheduled for 4.20 pm on Wednesday, 24 May, at the Seminar Theatre.
“Further changes to Approved Documents are happening, and a much greater focus on proving competence forms part of the new regulator,” adds Jon. “The information I share at the show will help visitors understand new expectations which will be placed on them as installers, the timeline of when changes come into action and advice on how to remain compliant.”
FIT Show visitors can #AskJon their questions on the Business Pilot Stand S41, throughout the show, during his midday talks on Tuesday, 23 and Wednesday, 24 May and during the panel debate at the Seminar Theatre on Wednesday at 4.20 pm.

Visitors can also submit questions to Jon on social media using #AskJon.

Successful customer visit to BAU 2023

A group of customers joined members of the Hörmann UK team in Munich to visit BAU 2023, the world’s leading trade exhibition for architecture, construction materials, and systems.

The trip provided the opportunity not only to visit the Hörmann Group stand, but also to attend what is an impressive event which is used as a major platform to showcase new innovations and major product launches. This year the 6-day show hosted over 190,000 visitors from 49 different countries – a truly international event.

Hörmann have traditionally used the BAU exhibition to launch new products and developments across their whole business. Concentrating on Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, and Innovation the Hörmann stand showcased exciting new products and features, covering domestic garage doors, entrance, and interior doors, loading technology, industrial doors, along with perimeter protection systems.

The impressive Hörmann stand covered over 1600 m2 , with everyone being able to view the huge selection of products on show, attend live demonstrations, and meet colleagues from Germany and other major European subsidiaries.

Commenting on the visit, David O’Mara Marketing Manager at Hörmann UK,
“BAU is a huge endeavour for the Hörmann Group, with the planning and preparation taking a large team of people many months, but the result was inspiring. That’s why we wanted to take our customers out to Munich to give them a flavour of the overall exhibition and, most importantly, show them the Hörmann products that are in the pipeline for the UK market.
I know everyone who joined us were impressed by the scope of the Hörmann Group and the new products that will be available for both the domestic and industrial markets over the coming months – enough to fill a new 72-page brochure!”

Jacksons Fencing extends tested and certified gate offering

Jacksons Fencing, a leading British manufacturer of high-security perimeter security solutions, has extended its line of tested and certified security gates that are specifically designed to meet the unique perimeter security requirements of different sites.

Recognising that every site has its own security perimeter needs, Jacksons Fencing has worked to extend its offering of security gates to provide architects and specifiers with the flexibility to customise a site's perimeter according to its specific purpose.

The range of security gates is available in single and double-leaf swing options in various heights and widths. All the gates have been rigorously tested and accredited to LPS 1175 Issue 8, offering ratings of A1, B1, and B3, ensuring that they meet the standards required for applications which need protection against forced entry.

The range complements Jacksons’ existing LPS 1175 fencing solutions with A1 (SR1) and B3 (SR2) rated gates, while the new B1-rated gates help to break away from SR1-SR5; Issue 7 ratings commonly still quoted by architects and specifiers.

Jacksons Fencing is proud to already deliver integrated perimeter security and access control solutions for a wide variety of applications; from military bases and mental health hospitals to data centres and other Critical National Infrastructure.

Now in its 76th year of business, Jacksons Fencing is really utilising the potential of the latest Issue 8 iteration of the LPS 1175 standard to enable architects and specifiers to better understand and employ the multiple layers of the system. This will ultimately provide greater flexibility and potentially save on costs by avoiding over and under-specifying.

This provides the opportunity for specifiers to extend their knowledge and embrace the 48 possible ratings in Issue 8 of the standard, providing tailored solutions with more appropriate levels of security.

As it stands, most LPS 1175 fencing products are rated using the latest classification system, but because many of them have been upgraded from Issue 7, their ratings still correspond with the SR1-SR5 scale (A1, B3, C5, D10, E10), so flexibility with choosing an appropriate product is still restricted. Our new B1 gates will help to provide a midway point between A1 (SR1) and B3 (SR2).

Peter Jackson, MD, Jacksons Fencing comments,
"We believe that by offering products that help to fill the gap and fulfil the potential of the standard, we can help push the security standard forward and support our customers further. Most products on the market are rated in line with the new system but match the old SR1-SR5 categories – which can be confusing and have a far less realistic scope for security ratings. By providing more clarity and understanding of the newer standard, we can make it easier for specifiers to align themselves with Issue 8 of the standard."
He continues, "our new security gates range is an important addition to our existing LPS 1175 fencing range. By providing a solid line of physical defence, we are ensuring that our customers have the best possible protection for their perimeters. The gates are designed to be fully integrated with our existing fencing range, offering a complete solution for high security applications. The LPS 1175 rating is essential for high security projects, and our range of high security gates has been tested and accredited by BRE. This gives our customers peace of mind that they are investing in a solution that meets the highest standards."

Commenting on behalf of BRE, Richard Flint, their technical and commercial lead for physical security stated:
“We are delighted Jacksons Fencing have embraced the opportunities presented to them and their clients by the matrix style classification system defined in LPS1175: Issue 8. The classifications introduced in Issue 8 enable manufacturers to demonstrate the delay their products provide against a range of threat levels, supporting clients who wish to specify proportionate levels of protection tailored to the threats they face and response times they can rely on”.
The new high-security gates range is available now and Jacksons Fencing is confident this extended offering will prove popular with customers who require robust high perimeter security.

To see the full scope of fencing and gates, visit www.redbooklive.com and search for certificate no. 913, or request a brochure through Jacksons Fencing.

Fire door hardware solutions – simplifying the process for installers

ARRONE and Falcon Timber have announced a successful joint fire test that has made it easier for installers to source a full package of compliant hardware for commercial fire doors.

Architectural ironmongery manufacturer ARRONE and Falcon Timber, formerly known as Falcon Panel Products, have tested a range of door hardware with Falcon’s Strebord 44 FD30 to provide installers with a complete set of fire door products that can be purchased off the shelf.

The combination of the products can offer a complete solution for fire door requirements in commercial buildings by providing products to suit a range of common door applications.

The combination of products will provide solutions for doors needed to be non-locking, latch/locking, deadlocking, as well as any riser/storage rooms or bathroom doors.

The mix of products tested include AR8182 ball bearing hinges, AR1500 size 2-4 door closer, intumescent and fire door signage, with choice of lever handle and pull handles escutcheons, locks and latches depending on where the door will be fitted.

Thumb turns and push plates are also covered on the evidence.

Ged Ryan, CEO of HOPPE (UK), said:

“Choosing products for fire doors can be complex. Installers often have to navigate several test sheets, symbols and quality marks to know which hardware is suitable for use on fire doors, and even this is dependent on the type of building the fire door is fitted in.

“When it comes to fire doors, there is no room for error: they are a life-saving feature. We’ve worked with Falcon Timber to help make the specification of fire doors and associated hardware as simple as possible.

“We can provide further support to installers and help them to give their customers confidence in the performance of their new fire doors.”

The products have been included on a EN 1634-1:2014+A1:2018 fire test specifically for use as a door assembly system with Strebord 44 fire doors.

For more information on the products used on the test, please contact HOPPE UK by telephone 01902 484410 or email: info.uk@hoppe.com

London Concours to Celebrate Classic Land Rovers at June’s Show

The London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, is delighted to announce a thrilling new class that will celebrate classic Land Rovers at its 2023 event, which is now under a month away.

The category, The Cars That Built Land Rover – sponsored by Land Rover Classic - will showcase some of the legendary, go-anywhere models from the Forties, Fifties and Sixties that helped establish the brand as one of the most recognisable and respected in the world.

These timeless machines will join nearly 100 spectacular privately owned cars in the beautiful grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company, from June 6th-8th, at what is destined to be London’s greatest automotive garden party yet.

The class vividly illustrates the remarkable journey Land Rover has embarked on over the past seven decades, evolving from a purveyor of rugged workhorses into a true global luxury powerhouse.

And nowhere is that more evident than with the Land Rover Pre Production L07, which is set to star at the show.

The L07 was one of the first vehicles to introduce company founder Maurice Wilks’ vision of a British utility 4x4 to the world when it was revealed at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, where it was used to provide demonstration drives for visitors.

This absolutely stunning Series I has lived an extraordinary life, vanishing for decades before being discovered in a garden in 2016 near the Solihull factory where it was originally built.

Now impeccably restored, it stands proud as a piece of genuine motoring history, and is sure to be one of the most popular exhibits at this year’s Concours.

Joining it will be an early Series I that thoroughly underlined the off-road credentials of the early Land Rover models by participating in a Trans-Africa challenge undertaken by teams from Oxford and Cambridge Universities in 1954.

The 86” Station Wagon proved its pedigree by successfully taking on a journey in excess of more than 25,000 miles which twisted its way from North Africa to Cape Town and back again, negotiating an array of countries that presented different, challenging conditions, as well as the hostile terrain of the Sahara Desert.

Although Oxford was the first team home in the expedition, arguably the real winner was the Series I, which demonstrated its toughness in the most forbidding of environments.

Also on display will be another Series I from the early Fifties that enjoyed a more rarefied existence in the hands of the Royal Family.

The Series 86” SW, built in 1953 and registered in 1954, became a firm favourite of Queen Elizabeth II, who had it delivered to her estate in Balmoral, Aberdeenshire and enjoyed driving it across the grounds with Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Sold on to a private buyer in 1966, it fell into disrepair but has subsequently been immaculately restored, to the extent it played a leading role in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant in 2022. Visitors are sure to relish the chance to get close to a car that served Her Majesty with such distinction.

Lining up alongside these Series I models will be a 1965 Series II that also enjoyed distinguished ownership in the hands of Spencer Wilks, who co-founded Land Rover with brother Maurice and enjoyed an illustrious career at the helm of the Rover Company as managing director, chairman and president.

Wilks used the S2A 88” when he stayed on Islay in Argyllshire – often used as a testing ground for Land Rover in the company’s early days – and it must have made quite an impression on the Hebridean isle with its striking grey paint and limestone-coloured wheels and roof.

Its appearance at the London Concours offers visitors a fantastic opportunity to see the subtle differences that marked out the Series II from its glorious predecessors.

One car on home territory at the event will be the Honourable Artillery Company’s very own Defender 90 Wolf, a machine that expertly demonstrates how Land Rover also became a trusted producer of light military vehicles.

First released in 1998 and as strong and durable as you would expect, the Wolf became a familiar sight on TV news reports from Afghanistan and Iraq, where it was used widely by British forces for patrol duties.

Its imperious ruggedness and robustness are emphasised by the fact there are still many Wolfs excelling in military service across the world.

The Cars That Built Land Rover class is just one of a number of sensational categories at June’s event, which will feature a mouth-watering range of machinery from a range of exotic marques.

It joins the previously confirmed Golden Age Coupes, Built To Race For The Road, Evolution of Aero and Grand Tourisme, with further class announcements set to follow in the next couple of weeks, as we build towards the 7th edition of this unmissable event.

Andrew Evans, London Concours Director, said:

“Land Rover is a British institution that has made a lasting impression on car fans across the world, and there are few brands that elicit such passion, particularly when it comes to its earliest models.

“We are honoured that visitors to the 2023 London Concours will have the chance to get up close to a collection of its pioneering machines thanks to the ‘Cars That Built Land Rover’ class, which promises to be a highlight of this year’s event.

“Excitement is building fast for the show, which is now just a matter of weeks away and will unquestionably be the best yet. Stay tuned for more announcements.”

In addition to an exceptional array of cars – the finest yet assembled – guests to the Honorary Artillery Company will be treated to a decadent range of food and drink options, including a brand-new Club Concours hospitality experience, engaging live stage discussions, as well as a carefully selected line-up of luxury brands and boutiques.

London Concours 2023 is set to be another occasion of total automotive indulgence.

Caldwell Hardware celebrates 50 years of UK manufacturing

Caldwell Hardware has been supplying quality window hardware for more than a century and 2023 marks 50 years since it expanded its manufacturing into the UK market.

During this time, it introduced several industry firsts, such as the first moving coil constant force balance, the first co-located casement window operator and lock, and the first heavy-duty spiral balance.

Caldwell recently joined with Yale, realising synergies and sharing best practices, creating a wider, comprehensive hardware range from one supplier.

The move allows Caldwell to retain its strong brand identity and offers customers the opportunity to benefit from the ease of now being able to deal with one single business unit.

Paul Atkinson, Managing Director at Yale, comments:

“Caldwell’s integration with Yale is an exciting development for both brands. Much like Yale, Caldwell has a rich heritage, provenance, and market-leading position.

“This move allows Caldwell to benefit from the endorsement of our global organisation, without compromising its current brand positioning.

“2023 marks 50 years since Caldwell expanded its manufacturing into the UK and it has cemented its place as a world-leading window hardware specialist, with over 1 billion balances sold to date. It offers a great complimentary range to our existing portfolio.

For example, our Vertex decorative furniture is a fresh, on-trend range that offers the ultimate solution for vertical sliding sash windows and is complimented perfectly by the unseen but essential Caldwell balances.”

Caldwell produces one of the widest ranges of spring balances currently available for sliding window systems.

This expansive range caters for virtually all applications, allowing fabricators to select the best solution based on precise levels of durability, cost and ease of use.

Paul adds:

“Caldwell is a fantastic fit alongside the Yale brand. Collaboration and integration between our teams will support the growth of both brands moving forward as one and enable us to offer best-in-class service to our customers.”

To mark the 50th celebration a new logo will be added to Caldwell Hardware’s website, literature, manuals and labels, with further developments to follow.
