GORDON SQUIRE 1928 – 2014, a great innovator of British lock-making

It is with great sadness that Henry Squire & Sons Ltd (based in Wolverhampton) announces the death of its chairman Gordon Squire. Aged 86, he died peacefully at home on Saturday, 8th November surrounded by his family.

Born Gordon Peter James Squire in 1928, he was an engineering graduate of Cambridge University before joining the family business in 1948.

He was very proud to be the seventh generation Squire to join the family lock-making business, which was founded by William Squire in 1780. In the early 1950s, he spent two years in North America, after which he revolutionised the Squire ranges of padlocks and cycle locks.

He developed and launched industry leading products such as Old English, Stronglocks, HS4 and CP1 locks, as well as our market leading ranges of cycle locks. The company also won industry awards for packaging and new products.

Gordon became chairman in 1989 and continued to be closely involved in the development of the company and the introduction of new products.

Gordon’s son and managing director John Squire said:

“For everyone who met Gordon he was a true gentleman with a strength of personality which inspired all who knew him - family, friends and work colleagues.
“We are so proud of his vision and achievements, transforming Squire into the market leading UK brand which is recognised globally today.
“Equally, he was a great family man and he will be greatly missed by us all.”
